VICTORIA LEADS NATION IN VEHICLE THEFT CLAIMS

VICTORIA has recorded more insurance claims for stolen vehicles and thefts from motor vehicles than all other states combined, according to new Insurance Council of Australia data.

Insurers paid out $243M across 12,500 claims in 2025, with Victoria the only state to record an increase in vehicle theft-related claims.

Authorities have linked the rise to organised crime, youth offending and the growing use of electronic devices that can bypass vehicle security systems.

Police estimate these devices are involved in more than 40 per cent of vehicle thefts.

The Holden Commodore was the state’s most stolen vehicle last year, while Melbourne’s City of Casey recorded the highest number of thefts.

LOVELL DEMANDS URGENT REPAIR OF ECHUCA ROAD

Northern Victorian MP Wendy Lovell has slammed the State Government for failing to fully fix Echuca Road and leaving dangerous potholes unrepaired.

A constituent who drives along Echuca Road from Mooroopna daily recently contacted Ms Lovell, reporting that the road surface near the Lancaster turn-off is deteriorating, with crumbling edges and

dangerous potholes growing larger by the day.

There are paint markings around the potholes waiting for repair that have worn off and been repainted three times in the last 18 months, Lovell said, yet repairs have not yet eventuated. The issue has since been raised in Victorian Parliament, with Lovell calling on the Minister for Roads and Road Safety to order immediate repairs.

ASHE STUDENTS ATTEND TRUTH TELLING IN CANBERRA

Academy of Sport, Health and Education (ASHE) students Siona Atkinson, Kady Harrison Proctor and Seianna Cook took part in the last of the National Walk for Truth in Canberra on Wednesday, May 27.

Accompanied by ASHE Director Alison McColl and ASHE Manager Operations and Student Success Heidi Knowles, the student’s had opportunity to meet the Prime Minister and personally hand over their message stick and possum skin.

As part of ASHE’s commitment to truth telling and civic leadership, students closely followed the progress of proud Kerrupnara/Gunditjmara man and Executive Director of Centre for Truth Telling and Dialogue at the University of Melbourne, Travis Lovett, during his National Walk for Truth 2026.

REGO REBATE

Victorians have until July 31 to claim the State Government’s 20 per cent registration rebate. To be eligible, motorists must have paid registration for a light vehicle or motorcycle for personal use between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. Eligible Victorians can claim the rebate on up to two vehicles registered in their name, regardless of whether registration was paid in full or by instalments.

Claims can be made through the Service Victoria website or app using a Service Victoria account.

For those without internet access or a Service Victoria account, applications can also be made by calling 13 28 42, selecting Option 1 and then Option 2 to speak directly with a customer service representative.

LEARN ELECTRONICS & 3D PRINTING

The Talent Stimulation in Electronic Programming Project (TALSEP) is a new program aimed at empowering local young people by introducing

them to the world of electronic design and programming. Community members eager to learn are invited to the launch and information session on Saturday, June 27, from 4pm at St Paul African House (54 Poplar St, Shepparton).

Funded by Greater Shepparton City Council and delivered by the Goulburn Valley African Australian Community, with support from St Paul African House, participants will learn how to create electronic objects, build practical skills and explore pathways into technology, engineering and innovation.

One or two family members have even been seen bringing copies of the column along with them when they come to visit relatives in Shepparton Villages homes. That’s lovely to know.

It seems there is a bit of an ‘information drought’ about aged care issues at times – particularly those issues that are harder to discuss – so I’m happy Shepparton Villages can make a small contribution to addressing that problem.

I started doing these columns as a way of sharing topical issues in aged care with others who might be interested, in a spirit of ‘continuous improvement’.

‘Continuous improvement’ is popular business jargon these days. In plain English it just means a commitment to trying to keep doing better, each and every day.

Jargon aside, it makes good sense – and in my view it must extend to how aged care providers go about communicating with residents and families, with staff, with users of Support at Home services, and with all others interested.

Shepparton Villages keeps trying to do our bit here each week, as well as well as on our website, email, Facebook, Instagram and even Linked In. And you know what? We still read letters sent by mail and respond to them too!

Not to forget face-to-face communication: our regular resident meetings remain open at all times to family and other supporters who want to come along. Because, let’s face it, there’s nothing like being in the room yourself when things get discussed!

Greater Shepparton City Council along with the Victorian Government will host a free live stream of the Socceroos’ FIFA World Cup 2026 opening match against Turkey on Sunday, June 14, at the Shepparton Showgrounds Multi-Purpose Pavilion.

Inspector Cameron Sanderson takes the helm in Greater Shepparton TO say Greater Shepparton’s new Local Area Commander, Inspector Cameron Sanderson, brings extensive experience to the role would be an understatement.

With 36 years in policing behind him, Inspector Sanderson’s career has spanned frontline general duties, specialist investigative u n it s , pro s e c ut ion , m ajor c ol l i sion investigations and leadership roles across Victoria, the Northern Territory and with the Australian Federal Police.

Beginning his career after graduating from the police academy in 1989, he served at Flemington before postings at Preston, Thomastown, Epping and Collingwood, before taking on roles in plain clothes drug units, liquor licensing and road policing.

In 2008, he joined Northern Territory Police, serving in Palmerston, the Tiwi Islands and remote Arnhem Land communities. Working on child abuse intervention initiatives during the Howard years, he later helped establish the Major Collision Investigation Unit in Alice Springs, where he was promoted to Detective Sergeant.

Following a secondment with the Australian Federal Police, he returned to Victoria, taking on roles in transit policing, the Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit investigating matchfixing, Professional Standards Command and as Officer in Charge at Lilydale.

Before stepping into an acting role as Area Commander in Brimbank, Inspector Sanderson later worked with the Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team and has contributed

across several other areas along with undertaking extensive work in adult education and training.

Beginning his leadership role in Shepparton in May, Inspector Sanderson said he was immediately impressed by the city’s cleanliness and sense of safety, particularly the low level of graffiti.

Despite the positive, however, he is clear about the ongoing challenges for the region.

Retail crime, family violence, youth disengagement, homelessness, motor vehicle theft and road trauma remain key focus areas.

While noting early results through initiatives such as Operation Securus, he said more work is needed to ensure the community feels safe, particularly in public and retail spaces.

“Retail crime is a challenge not just in Shepparton, but across Victoria and Australia.

People don’t come to work to be abused or exposed to violence.”

He also identified homelessness as a significant local issue, alongside anti-social behaviour and youth-related matters, particularly in relation to social media as well as ensuring safety in and around licensed premises. He was equally firm on the importance of strengthening community partnerships, particularly around early intervention programs and victim support.

“That’s one of our main priorities — to ensure, in the last month, I’ve been out meeting stakeholders at Greater Shepparton City Council, the Department of Justice, Rumbalara — all the different stakeholders we’ll be

working with. Building those relationships is vital so that we’re all on the same page and have the same goals, because you can’t do it on your own; policing is just one part of it.”

“We need those partnerships to support victims, ensure offenders receive the right treatment and drive behaviour change.”

While highlighting the drop in Greater Shepparton’s crime rate by five per cent over the 12 months to May this year, Inspector Sanderson said police resourcing — while not unique to the region — remains a challenge, though effective management is key.

“Resourcing is an issue not just for Victoria,

but worldwide. It’s not just about numbers, but how you use them — making sure officers are in the right place at the right time.

“We are short, but it’s about managing what we have effectively.”

Only 18 when he entered the Police Academy and hitting the streets in uniform at 19, Inspector Sanderson said: “I thought I’d stay for five and keep my options open.

“Did five years and anyway, 36 years later — it’s not bad. That 36 years has gone quickly, so I must have enjoyed it.”

THE Victorian bushfires have wreaked havoc across the state earlier this year, with over 450 homes lost and more damaged, leaving many Victorians displaced.

As the smoke still lingered over the hectares of fire-ravaged land, criticism began to mount from multiple sources over the handling of the bushfire, with finger-pointing from many sides.

When the blame game begins, it is the people on the ground most affected who become lost in statistics.

Member for Northern Victoria MP Wendy Lovell has been a strong advocate in this space, but the Minister for Natural Disaster Recovery Vicki Ward feels the recent criticism of the State Government's response to people displaced by the fires has been misinformed.

“The Member is wrong. While she and Jess Wilson are busy playing politics and spreading misinformation, we’ve been on the ground since day one helping families recover and rebuild,” said Ms Ward.

“From when the fires first started, we moved

quickly to provide emergency accommodation, and we’re now delivering longer-term solutions to make sure bushfire-affected Victorians continue to have a safe place to stay throughout their recovery.

“Along with the Commonwealth, we have delivered more than $420 million to help bushfire-affected Victorians pick up the pieces following these devastating fires — and we’ll always consider what more we can do.”

The modular housing program is the latest step in the State Government's ongoing recovery efforts, while families work through retaining foundations, insurance arrangements and obtaining the permits needed for rebuilding.

Previous efforts include support for mental health, livestock fodder, clean-up, and for local councils, through funding from the State and Commonwealth Governments, as Victorians pick up the pieces.

The disaster recovery programs are not designed to replace insurance. Insurance

companies also need to play their role in delivering timely support for their clients.

THE Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project and Food Ladder celebrated the launch of two innovative greenhouse and healthy food growing systems alongside funders, volunteers and the school community, on Wednesday, May 20.

The Food Ladder’s greenhouses, located at Gowrie Street Primary School and Mooroopna Park Primary School, are creating new opportunities for students and schools to thrive through healthy food and hands-on learning.

“The potential was immediately clear this was about far more than building greenhouses. It was about tackling food insecurity, improving student wellbeing, and creating meaningful learning experiences that could shape future pathways,” said Amy Robinson, Executive Officer of the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project.

The project was made possible with funding support from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program and combined grants from local Rotary Groups including Shepparton Central, Shepparton and Shepparton South. Local service clubs, including Kiwanis and Rotary along with local businesses and amazing community volunteers assisted Lighthouse and the schools with site preparation and construction of the agri-tech and greenhouse infrastructure.

Both primary schools already run highly successful breakfast and lunch programs to ensure students are nourished and ready to learn. The Gowrie Street Grade greenhouse also links to a First Nations edible garden which was co-designed, planned and planted by Grade 5 and 6 students, under the guidance of Auntie Lisa Lynch.

By Aaron Cordy DOMESTIC abuse is a hidden sickness that infects all levels of Australian society. One in four women have experienced violence from an intimate partner since age 15, with one woman a week killed by a partner on average. Family and domestic violence reports are rising, with 97,800 offenders recorded by police in 2024–25, an eight per cent increase and the highest since reporting began, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

What is rarely reported on is that it is estimated that one in 14 men have experienced violence from an intimate partner after turning 16.

For generations, women have struggled to report abuse from a partner due to the system that has historically put more effort into victim-

blaming than addressing the issue. For men, coming forward to report abuse from an intimate partner –male or female– a mix of shame, lack of belief, and the old adage that men and boys need to suck it up and be a man, can make it even harder to report domestic abuse.

One local man, who will be called Steve, has experience with the system that has left almost as many scars on him as his ex-wife. As a ward of the state, Steve grew up believing violence and abuse in a relationship was natural.

“When I met my ex-wife, it was really nice that she wasn't like that until she fell pregnant. Once she fell pregnant, we got married, and it turned.

She would physically assault me on a daily basis,” said Steve.

every support service in the area for people experiencing family violence, and the most common response I got was, ‘You don't know what it's like to be a parent raising children 24/7, you're just the father.’”

Steve's story is long and gets far worse, especially where his children are concerned. It is the system's failure to recognise a male victim that has left Steve’s children at risk.

Being believed is one of the biggest issues that victim survivors face when they report domestic and intimate partner abuse, no matter their gender. Nationally, about 21 per cent of people found guilty of family and domestic violence offences are sentenced to time in gaol.

the head. She left bruises up and down my arm, around my back and my stomach after the children were born.

“If I didn't get a particular thing she wanted done without her telling me, she would physically assault me or spend an hour or two screaming in my face about what I'd been doing or had not been doing. At one particular point, she pinned me to the ground, sat on my chest and just kept punching me. I reported this to the police, and they told me to grow some balls and not waste their time.”

It was not the last time the police would ignore Steve’s attempts to report his ex-wife. When he discovered she had used anti-freeze to poison his coffee in front of their children and one of her friends, which caused kidney stones. Again, seeking help, Steve was ignored by the local police.

“That friend of hers tried to report it to the police, but they ignored it. I tried to report it to the police. They told me I was just trying to get back at my ex-wife for leaving me. They refused to take a report or talk to anybody who saw it happen… I was only able to make a report about it last year. The anti-freezing happened in 2016.”

Breaking away from this toxic environment has been an odyssey for Steve and his children.

His children have been and still are in danger of abuse in that environment because of his ex-wife and the people in her life.

“When we separated, I tried to organise to get myself and the children out of there, and the police told me that if I left with the kids, I would be charged with kidnapping. I called

Reconciliation through meaningful engagement ALL In is this year’s theme for Reconciliation Week, a call to action for every Australian to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day.

With education at the heart of this understanding, and as a powerful driver of reconciliation, All Saints Anglican School welcomed Yorta Yorta Aboriginal singersongwriter, educator and speaker Scott Darlow to campus on Tuesday, June 2. Joined by his daughters, Kiah and Summer, he brought the message to life through music, conversation and a celebration of what it truly means to be Australian.

Beginning with a whole-school assembly, followed by year-level workshops, the sessions combined music, storytelling and open conversation. Students were invited not only to learn about Aboriginal culture and history, but

also to reflect on their place within it and their role in reconciliation.

As a diverse and vibrant school community grounded in faith, respect, excellence and inclusion, the visit deepened students’ understanding of what it means to be Australian as part of a resilient and harmonious community. It also reinforced what a genuine commitment to reconciliation, shaped by understanding, respect and a willingness to listen, truly looks like.

And, by all accounts, it was also a great deal of fun.

For Year 7 student Penelope Sole, learning the song Ngarra Burra Ferra with Kiah and Summer was both enjoyable and meaningful: “We learned what it is to be Australian and how you don’t need to be born in Australia to be Australian, it comes from within. If

While Grade 6 and Year 7 students immersed themselves in music, Year 9 students engaged with Scott as he led a discussion on the importance of acknowledging Aboriginal history, highlighting the traditions of a culture

spanning more than 65,000 years, as well as the enduring impact of colonisation and generational trauma.

Running throughout the talk and the day was the acronym FLUTE, which guides students towards meaningful reconciliation through Forgiveness, Love, Understanding, Tolerance and Empathy.

STUDENTS and staff at Notre Dame College came together for a special assembly to mark National Reconciliation Week, held annually from May 27 to June 3.

The week commemorates two significant milestones in Australia's reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum and the 1992 Mabo decision, which recognised the land rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The assembly provided an opportunity for the school community to reflect on the importance of respect, understanding and strengthening relationships between First Nations peoples and the wider Australian community. Through special guest speakers and student participation, the event encouraged meaningful conversations about truth-telling, unity and working together towards a more reconciled future.

Locals receive King’s Birthday honours FOUR locals have received the Medal of the Order of Australia in the King’s Birthday Honours List on Monday, June 8. Dale Wright OAM, Ro Allen OAM, Donald Alchin OAM, and Aunty Merle Miller OAM were given Australia’s top honour for services to the community.

Dale Wright OAM has been a tireless campaigner for men's mental health for more than 40 years. His Talk Straight program has helped countless men battling with their mental health to understand they are not doing it alone.

NUMURKAH local Lee Lythgo knows just how rewarding supporting local businesses can be after taking home the $5,000 major prize in the 2025 GMCU Giveaway.

Lee’s winning entry came from a $208.84 grocery shop at Coles Riverside Plaza, meaning her prize was worth the equivalent of almost 25 grocery shops if spent the same way.

When The Adviser called with the news, Lee was stunned.

“Is that true?” she asked. Later reflecting on the win, Lee said the prize created opportunities she wouldn’t have normally considered. With a grandson expected later that year, there was no shortage of ways the money could be put to good use.

Lee wasn’t the only shopper celebrating. Nagambie’s Martine Eames won a $750 GMCU debit card after entering at the Main Course Butchery at Riverside Plaza.

“I just can’t believe it! That’s so wonderful,” Martine said when she was told she had won. “I spent a fortune in Shepparton that day, so it’s great to win this prize.”

Council seeks clarity on Central North REZ

GREATER Shepparton City Council is calling for greater clarity from VicGrid after confirmation that the proposed Central North Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) remains under consultation and has not yet progressed to a formal declaration.

The proposed Central North REZ includes parts of Greater Shepparton, including Dookie, Pine Lodge and Cosgrove. While Council welcomed the update, it says uncertainty remains about the next steps and how community feedback will influence future decisions.

Mayor Cr Shane Sali said residents had provided strong feedback throughout the consultation process and deserved to know how their concerns would be addressed.

“VicGrid has confirmed the Central North Renewable Energy Zone is still in a consultation phase, which is positive news.

However, there is a lack of detail around what happens next and how community feedback

will be used,” Cr Sali said.

A Council-commissioned review by Sequana found the proposed REZ boundaries include some of Victoria’s most productive cropping land. The review also highlighted concerns from landholders about the potential loss of productive farmland, landscape impacts and perceived inequities in benefit distribution.

Deputy Mayor Cr Geoff Akers said Council would continue advocating for a transparent and community-focused process, encouraging residents to stay engaged as no final decision has been made.

THE oustanding contributions of volunteers across the region were recently honoured at the 17th annual Greater Shepparton Volunteer Recognition Awards.

Organised by Greater Shepparton City Council and held at Riverlinks Eastbank, the event brought together more than 300 attendees to celebrate a record 45 nominations across four award categories, highlighting the dedication and impact of volunteers within the community.

The Volunteer Recognition Awards recognise and thank

people who contribute their time and energy for the benefit of the community. The ceremony is held annually as part of National Volunteer Week in May, with this year’s theme being ‘Your Year to Volunteer’, encouraging greater participating.

ADULT VOLUNTEER... awarded to Michael Rowe. Michael volunteers with the Mary Coram Unit at GV Health, supporting people who are new amputees. Drawing on lived experience, Michael provides one-on-one peer support, helping patients manage mental isolation and adjust to life after amputation by sharing practical insights and coping strategies.

TEAM VOLUNTEER AWARD... awarded to Oncology Support Volunteer Team. The Oncology Support Volunteer Team provides daily practical support within the Oncology Unit, including serving meals, preparing information packs, managing supplies and assisting patients and families. Their reliable presence allows clinical staff to focus on care while ensuring patients receive consistent, compassionate support throughout treatment. Goulburn Valley Volleyball Association winning Most Outstanding Association VOLLEYBALL Victoria’s Annual Affiliate Awards were held on Sunday at the State Volleyball Centre in Melbourne, with Goulburn Valley Volleyball Association (G V VA) w i n n i ng Mo s t Outstanding Association for 2025.

In just their first year as an Association and Affiliate, GVVA successfully applied for 11 grants, attracting State and Local Government funding of over $21,600, enabling the purchase of much-needed volleyball equipment, running

their first GVVL competition, training members as referees a nd coache s , at tend i ng championship tournaments and installing sleeves on the show courts at Shepparton Sports Stadium, effectively doubling the number of tournament-quality courts.

“I can’t wait to share this with our community,” said GV VA President Sharon Murray.

“We’ve had incredible support from the team at Volleyball Victoria, but also appreciat ive of suppor t

from the State Government, Community Wellbeing at Greater Shepparton City Council, Valley Sport and Ethnic Council Shepparton.”

“Our first Shepp Revival tournament in 2025 quickly hit capacity with 24 teams competing in over 60 matches on the three volleyball courts Shepp had, doubling the courts meant we could expand this year to 50 teams and deliver a better experience all round.”

GOULBURN Valley League’s underage representative netballers had a clean sweep of the North East Association Championships in Albury on Sunday, May 24.

The GVL netballers claimed the 17 & under Championship, 15 & Under Championship and the 15 & Under Reserve titles in what was a stunning achievement from the local young women.

The 15 & Under Reserve team, coached

by Amy Woodman, beat Albury Netball Association in the final after topping their

pool and powering through a big semi–final win. The 15 & Under Championship side, coached by Courtney Simpson, took out a tight final against Ovens & Murray, in a gritty performance filled with class from the young ladies. The 17 & Under team, coached Amy Marshall, after dropping one game in the qualifiers, turned the tables to defeat Albury Netball Association in the grand final.

All three teams now join our GVL Open squad at the State Finals in Melbourne on Sunday, June 21.

Mooroopna completed back to back wins for the first time since late 2024 at Kyabram on Saturday – beating the reigning premier and knocking them out of the top six in the process and now sits just half a win outside the top six.

The Cats are a top four disposal team and are ranked 5th for clearances, thanks to the physicality of the Beston brothers - Keelin and Liam - along with prolific ball winner Kai Madgwick Rochester was unable to frank its form of the previous week, when it had a 110 point win against Benalla, kicking just one goal in the second and third quarters to face a 30 point deficit at ¾ time.

On a positive Hugh Hamilton now has 14 goals from four games, since returning, and tackling machine Cooper Hamilton continues to support Mitch Trewhella in the engine room.

I think the Tigers can bounce back on their home ground.

Prediction: Rochester by 11 points.

BENALLA (10th) v KYABRAM (7th) Kyabram is on the outside looking in for the first time in a long while, sitting 7th on the ladder after suffering a second straight defeat for the first time since Rounds 11 and 12 of the 2024 season.

For the second time this year the Bombers have been held to under 100+ points in successive weeks – having posted scores of 176, 166 and 150 in Rounds 3, 5 and 7.

They face a Benalla team that has lost their last three games by a combined total of 304 points, not managing more than 60 points in any of those games.

Apart from Anthony Depasquale’s five goal game the Bombers had no other multiple goalkickers, which is a rare event for the usually multi-pronged attack.

Prediction: Kyabram by 59 points.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Round 14, 2025 - Kyabram won by 119 points

Trent Freer and Jessie Cucinotta’s United are the hot team at minute, winning their last three games after losing to Mansfield and Echuca in successive weeks.

They produced one of the most accurate goalkicking displays of the season to produce a 22.10 score and beat Benalla by 102 points – just two weeks after being Tatura by 99. Those results have them now sitting in 5th place on the ladder.

While it is unlikely they can pass 4th ranked Seymour, even with a win, they need the points to stay inside he top six. A loss could see them drop to 7th if Kyabram beat Benalla and Mansfield account for Tatura –both the Bombers and Eagles having better percentages than the Demons.

Seymour returned to the winners’ list on the back of a master class from Nic Quigg and Tom Stapleton in the centre.

My trust levels in the Lions aren’t high, so it is the Demons narrowly for me.

Prediction: United by 4 points.

TATURA (12th) v MANSFIELD (6th)

The match of the round pits two of the top three teams against one another, with Echuca having the chance to create a bit more breathing space if it can overcome the swans at Echuca South Recreation Reserve.

With Carlton’s VFL team having a bye this weekend, Oliver Warburton may well be back in the red and white for the first time since Round 6. Hugh Byrne took five marks for North Melbourne’s VFL team in a narrow loss, so is likely to keep his spot in the team.

Tom Evans was outstanding with 190 ranking points and Lachlan Hogan had his best game of the season, while Sam Reid’s four goals was a danger sign for opposition clubs.

Prediction: Echuca by 21 points.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Finals Round 1, 2025 - Echuca won by 18 points

The Magpies will be hoping to start this game how they finished their Round 9 clash with Echuca. They trailed by 78 points at ¾ time, after kicking just two goals to 13 in the first three quarters, but kicked four goals in the final term.

Cohen Paul appears to have returned to his best after just two games back from a five week spell on the sidelines. The Magpies have only gone past 60 points twice this year and face a Bears defence which has given up more than 60 points only twice this season.

Zac Metcalf and Max Brodie are working closely with Mitch Brett and Daniel Meek to restrict opposition clubs’ attacks to limited scoring opportunities.

Another master class from Luke Smith, Ash

Mansfield was without star Callum Brown for the first time since Round 3 of the 2024 season last weekend and now sits sixth on the ladder – with Kyabram and Mooroopna breathing down their neck.

The Eagles have the chance to improve their situation with a win against the Bulldogs, but there were good signs for Tatura against Shepp Swans on Saturday. They not only passed 60 points for the second time this year, but they also led at ¼ time and were dead level with the Swans at half time.

Ben Les produced one of the games of the season when he racked up 198 ranking points and Sam Thomson continues to be a star for the Eagles. They should have the firepower to get back on the winners’ list after losing to top team Shepp Bears.

Prediction: Mansfield by 78 points.

North Melbourne failed to turn up to Bunbury, and David King isn’t overly pleased by the club’s disastrous effort.

Facing ladder leaders Fremantle in a home game... in WA, the Kangaroos put on a dire performance, conceding an unacceptable 19 straight goals to lose by 124 points on Saturday.

After George Wardlaw booted the club’s fourth goal at the seven minute mark of the second term, the Roos failed to kick another goal for the rest of the game, leaking 19 the other way in one of the worst performances of the season.

Demolished in every facet, the Dockers ran rings around Alastair Clarkson’s men, who many thought were ready to challenge for September this season.

In a rather scathing review, David King outlined his disappointment with the club’s leaders amid a calamitous contest out west.

“It was one of the poorest performances I’ve ever seen,” King told SEN Fireball.

“They legit phoned it in. Just uncompetitive.

“It’s hard to go after individuals when it’s like this but in the end, the designated leaders are there for a reason.

“The one thing that frustrates me is that when you can feel it sliding like this, sometimes you just need someone to walk into the middle and demand more.

“I’m hard on the leaders at any club, because this is why you get the stripes and you get the extra cash and you get your name on the locker with a little C next to it, or vice-captain, whoever you are.

“I would have loved to have seen Nick Larkey walk into the middle of the ground halfway through this onslaught and say, ‘hey, what’s going on here?’.

“Or, put himself at centre half back, put himself into the ruck, put himself into the game, instead of just withering

on the vine in the forward half.

“I just didn’t think there was enough intervention from the leaders.”

Kane Cornes added: “Why isn’t that Tristan Xerri?

“He’s taken a big, long-term deal, he is the guy that has been the guy to do that. Why isn’t that Luke DaviesUniacke?

“Colby McKercher and Harry Sheezel, I know they’re not the captains…”

King: “It’s different if the captain does it.”

Cornes: “Break glass in case of emergency. You can’t do that every time, but that was worthy.”

King: “‘You’re out, I’m coming in. I

shouldn’t be in here; I’m only coming in because you’ve been shizen!’.

Following their big come-frombehind victory over Gold Coast in Round 11, North Melbourne president Sonja Hood sent out a letter to the members, outlining the club’s progress both on and off the field.

While the club has evidently taken steps forward this season, Cornes believes North Melbourne find comfort far too easily, crediting themselves for their own efforts a little too prematurely.

“They are easily satisfied as a football club,” he said.

“They have little wins and they go okay, we’ve arrived. We’ve beaten Gold Coast… there’s just a

comfortability and a satisfaction that can come into young playing groups, but it just happens too often.

“How else do you explain 19 goals in a row other than they got ahead of themselves, they were comfortable, Alastair Clarkson thought it’s all happening for us here, the youngsters are thriving.

“It was only one really strong quarter against Gold Coast; the first half was average. Why does this group get ahead of themselves?”

King: “I don’t have the answer to that.

“It’s not physical, that’s the bottom line. Somewhere there is a lack of absolute ruthlessness with your mental

preparation, because they just weren’t there.”

Cornes: “Is it just that they know they’re going to get a game every week?

“Cam Zurhaar will play every week, no worries. Why doesn’t he go in the middle? Why doesn’t Zurhaar go in the middle and crash a few packs.”

King: “Because he is not the answer” Cornes: “But he could be if he wanted to be. Go and throw your weight around. He knows he is going to play. McKercher, Sheezel, they are all going to play.

“They’ve all got long term deals, they are all comfortable, they’re not going to lose their place at selection, and they are just satisfied with what they are doing. That’s the way I see it.”

King: “When they put in a performance like this, you’re entitled to take it down any path you like, because that is just unacceptable. I tell you, I look forward to this week.

“They’ve got a great run; their next three weeks you’ll find out if they have or haven’t improved.

“To this point, you have to say they have improved, but the weekend was a huge step backwards.”

Cornes: “Let’s see. If they win this week against West Coast, which they will, whether they get satisfied again and whether there’s another letter to the members that goes out about their growth and their improvement.”

King: “And then put your hand out for a contract. Clarko, by all reports, there have been some inquiries made about an extension.”

Cornes: “There isn’t a world in which Alastair Clarkson is signed nowhere near before the halfway point of next year.

“You could win a final this year and you wouldn’t be signing Clarko in the offseason. No one is poaching Clarko, let him coach into next year. Why would we be extending him now or at the end of the year?”

King: “They’ve had some amazing decisions in the past; I’m not going to put anything past them!”
