By Natasha Fujimoto THERE are those who adventure from the safety of books, and then there are those who step beyond their comfort zone to experience the wild — curious, brave and determined to encounter up close that which intrigues and awe inspires them most. For ardent naturalist and conservationist Wendy D’Armore, it is the latter spirit of adventure that has taken her across the globe, swimming alongside and coming remarkably close to multiple species of whales.

Having long been fascinated by the sea and its creatures, Wendy’s love of nature and deep appreciation for its inhabitants stems not only from her qualifications in zoology and botany, but also from a rich and full career working hands-on in the field as a conservationist, wildlife guide and educator, as well as penning two books on native vegetation in collaboration with local resource management groups.

Traversing the world with her husband, Michael, Wendy’s passion for whales of all kinds has taken her from one oceanic realm to another. From snorkelling with dwarf minke whales along the Great Barrier Reef, to coming within just metres of a blue whale in TimorLeste, Wendy has plunged into the depths with — or viewed — humpbacks, orcas, dugongs, sperm and southern right whales, and more.

When asked her motivation to experience such remarkable creatures up close, Wendy said: “I have always been captivated by the sea and its creatures… I learned to scuba dive at 19 and also enjoyed snorkelling. I really wanted to see a whale up close, just to be in the presence of one of these magnificent creatures, look it in the eye, and make some kind of connection, even if fleeting.”

Realising her dream of snorkelling with minke whales on the outer barrier reef with a company aptly named Eye to Eye, Wendy and Michael have since been unstoppable in their quest to respectfully experience whales in their own waters.

In perhaps their most adventurous quest yet, the couple travelled to the Caribbean in February this year, joining other intrepid Aussies, as well as international travellers, to

swim with sperm and humpback whales.

In an experience described as exhilarating and transformative, Wendy and Michael spent a week on a liveaboard off Silver Banks in the Dominican Republic during the first of their two–week Caribbean journey, encountering humpback whales measuring between 12 and 18 metres long, as well as calves, on most days.

“There were rough seas and rowdy whales — very boisterous behaviour with tail and pectoral fin slapping and breaching most days — but we did not swim with them all,” Wendy said.

“Instead, we rode alongside the whales and filmed them as they swam underneath the boat.

They can be incredibly energetic and powerful.”

During their second week, the couple stayed on land in Dominica but managed to swim with mighty sperm whales most days.

“The whales were detected using hydrophones to hear the clicking noises they make when using echolocation, which determines the direction they are coming from.

The parameters are to enter the water quietly with little splash, stay near your guide and wait for the whale to approach,” Wendy said.

Though there is no guarantee a whale will approach, despite best efforts, Wendy said when they do, “…it’s magic”.

“It is a joy and a privilege to swim with them.

Sometimes the whale would rather not swim with us, so it turns away or deep dives with one flick of its tail. There is no chasing, harassing or touching of whales. If all the stars align, you will get a ‘chill’ whale who doesn’t mind our company for a while, is curious and happy for us to observe or swim alongside. The captain calls ‘whale up!’, you gear up quickly and slide into the water quietly, follow your guide and wait for the whale to approach.”

By all accounts a veteran whale swimmer and snorkeller, Wendy holds the following to be true: “They are the largest creatures alive on Earth, have the largest brains and can live up to 80 to 100 years or more. They traverse the oceans, with many species living in family groups and caring for calves. They are tactile, beautiful and gentle giants, are curious, have complex social lives and communicate with one another.

Charity gala shines for VincentCare ANO Cosmetics & Skin in Shepparton transformed its clinic and outdoor gardens into an event venue to host the inaugural ANO Charity Gala.

Across the gala, raffle, auction initiatives and our in-clinic fundraising efforts, we were incredibly proud to raise $20,000 for the Marian Community Specialist Family Violence Services through VincentCare Victoria.

“As a clinic that has now seen thousands of predominantly female patients walk through our doors since opening in 2020, we felt strongly that family violence is something that unfortunately impacts many within our community, directly or indirectly, and we wanted to contribute in a meaningful and tangible way,” said ANO Founder and Director Olivia Feldtmann.

“For us, this was never about creating a glamorous event for the sake of it. It was about using the platform and community ANO has built to give back at a grassroots level to an

organisation supporting women and families within our own region.”

The evening brought together a broad crosssection of our community, businesses and supporters, and included speeches from Anna Tinsley, who spoke incredibly powerfully about her personal experience with domestic violence and her resilience and Marie Murfet and the Marian Community team, who attended the evening and received the cheque presentation on behalf of the organisation.

“Importantly, we wanted the fundraising to feel genuinely community-led and transparent, so we have been openly sharing that approximately half of the funds raised came directly from ANO Cosmetics & Skin and our founders personally, whilst the remaining half came from community fundraising initiatives we organised and facilitated through sponsors, donations, raffle sales, auction items and guest contributions,” said Olivia.

No place for abuse

The term ‘Elder Abuse’ is not one that any of us would ever want to have to know about.

It’s a term that describes attitudes, behaviour and activities that cause harm or work against the interests of older people, or in some cases just fail to take their views into account.

Elder abuse can be obvious at times, such as when an older person is struck or roughly handled in ways that are unwelcome. But it can be quieter and more insidious too, such as when a friend, relative or someone else manipulates their relationship with an older person to gain financial advantage in some way.

We’d all prefer to believe it doesn’t exist; that everyone is treated respectfully and fairly at every stage of life; and that our interests and views are considered and respected no matter whether we are young or old or anything in between.

But sadly we know that isn’t always the case. We need to recognise abuse for what it is and to call it out when it happens.

In that context I applaud an initiative being taken throughout the month of June by Greater Shepparton City Council in association with Elder Rights Australia and other partners. They’re holding Information sessions at venues around the district to explain people’s rights, show how to recognise and respond to signs of elder abuse, answer questions and help people connect with others.

The sessions are being held at: Tatura Community House, 1-3pm, on Friday 5 June; Shepparton Eureka Village, 10-11.30am on Tuesday 9 June; Goulburn Valley U3A at 10am-12.30pm on Friday 12 June; North Shepparton Community Centre, 10am-12 noon on Tuesday 16 June; Murchison Community House, 10.30am-12.30pm on Friday 19 June; and Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre, 10.30am-12.30pm on Monday 22 June.

ROADSAFE Goulburn Valley (RSGV) and The Shepparton Adviser are urging drivers to Rest and Be Safe This Kings’ Birthday holiday season.

Located at key rest stops statewide, these sites offer free tea, coffee and snacks, encouraging drivers to stop and enjoy vital rest before continuing their journey.

Many community groups will be manning Pause Stop, Driver Revivor sites along major regional routes, providing drivers with safe places to pull over, reset, and recharge. Many of these vans are manned by with VICSES, Lions Club, Rotary and RSL volunteers.

rescues using hydraulic tools such as the ‘jaws of life’, regularly work alongside Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and fire services to save lives.

In many cases these same members will attend a collision site as first responders and the message is quite clear—they would rather not! Preferring that you get to your destination safely.

We at RSGV are urging all road users to exercise extra care, take breaks at least every two hours, share driving duties where possible, and avoid driving at times they would normally be asleep.

Our suggestion is to take advantage, have a minimum 15-minute power nap.

Whilst there, check out some of the local knowledge and resources to plan a safe journey and explore local attractions. Members are usually up for a chat, which can be entertaining.

Whether you’re heading to the coast, the country or to the opening of the snow season, remember, one small stop can make one big difference.

Peak body welcomes practical outcome of firearms review IN the wake of the Bondi terrorist attack, the Victorian Government’s rapid review of firearm laws has led to prompt policy action. While 15 of the 16 recommendations to strengthen gun laws have been adopted, it is the decision to reject a proposed cap on firearm ownership that has drawn the strongest support from the peak industry body.

Welcoming the outcome of the Ken Lay review, the Firearm Traders Association of Victoria (FTA) said the Allan Government had achieved a measured and practical balance.

While backing stronger regulation overall, the association pointed to the government’s rejection of a firearm ownership cap as a key decision and acknowledged Premier Jacinta Allan’s balanced, common-sense leadership in

doing so.

The FTA said the outcome reflects the evidence gathered during the review and avoids placing additional restrictions on law-abiding firearm owners including sporting shooters, farmers and pest controllers. It pointed to Victoria’s existing framework, which includes strict licensing tests, background checks, secure storage laws and ongoing compliance monitoring, as already among the toughest in the country.

While supporting the adoption of 15 recommendations aimed at strengthening controls and targeting criminal misuse, the association said the rejection of a blanket ownership cap was critical in ensuring legitimate users are not penalised without

evidence of risk. It maintained that policy outcomes should remain focused on keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals and individuals who do not meet licensing requirements.

The FTA also highlighted the role of licensed dealers, who oversee lawful sales, transfers, record keeping and storage, and work closely with Victoria Police Licensing and Regulation Division to uphold compliance standards across the state.

The association said it would continue working with the Victorian Government and Victoria Police to ensure firearms laws remain effective, practical and focused on community safety, while preserving the rights of responsible licensed firearm owners.

Roots planted in Shepparton spread around Australia

Council celebrated 10 years of One Tree Per Child

By Aaron Cordy GREATER Shepparton City Council celebrated 10 years of the One Tree Per Child program on Tuesday, May 26, marking a decade of community planting, environmental education and local action across the region.

Founded by Olivia Newton-John and Jon Dee, One Tree Per Child was created with the simple goal of encouraging every child to plant at least one tree before leaving school.

“When Olivia and I started that, we planted the first tree in Hyde Park in London. We've now planted trees in 10 countries, but the one community that's done one Tree Per Child better

than anybody is here in Shepparton,” said Jon. “This kind of thing only happens when you get the council on board, you get community groups on board, you get all the schools on board, and one of the community groups who really helped enormously over the years with Tree Day and with One Tree Per Child is Lions Clubs.

“I mentioned the fact that Lions were helping out in Shepparton to the guy who's in charge of Lions Clubs in Australia, and he loved that idea, and he wanted to know more about it. Then he introduced me to the global vice president of Lions, who happens to be Australian, and so I gave a speech on Saturday in Adelaide to the

Since becoming the first Council in Australia to adopt the initiative in 2016, Greater Shepparton has planted almost 200,000 Indigenous trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers through the program. The program has engaged with 57 schools, 19 kindergartens and childcare centres,

30 community groups and five disability services across Greater Shepparton.

The 10-year milestone will be recognised during Greater Shepparton’s annual community planting event on Sunday, July 26, at Tassiker Reserve, Shepparton, from 10am to 1pm, as part of National Tree Day activities. THE Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence (MCRE) recently hosted a public lecture presented through the Gabra Biik Wurruwila Wutja Indigenous Research Centre at La Trobe University, featuring Harvard University Professor Philip J. Deloria.

Professor Deloria is the Leverett Saltonstall Professor of History at Harvard University. His research and teaching focus on the social, cultural and political histories of relationships between American Indian peoples and the United States, as well as global Indigenous histories and connections.

The lecture explored the art and legacy of Professor Deloria’s greataunt, Mary Sully, a Native American artist whose distinctive work is increasingly recognised for its unique contribution to Indigenous art and cultural history.

Dutch Ambassador visit celebrates region’s agricultural and community ties

THE strong agricultural, cultural and economic links between the Netherlands and the Goulburn Valley were highlighted during a two-day visit to the region by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Australia, Her Excellency Mrs Ardi Stoios-Braken.

Hosted by Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell, the visit showcased the significant contribution Dutch families and businesses continue to make across the electorate, particularly in agriculture, horticulture, dairy, food manufacturing and regional education.

Mr Birrell said the Dutch community had played an important role in shaping the region for generations.

“The Dutch community has been part of the fabric of this region for decades, and what they have built here is extraordinary,” he said.

“From dairy farms and glasshouses to orchards and food manufacturing, Dutch families and businesses have brought world-class knowledge, enterprise and a genuine commitment to our region.”

Mr Birrell said the visit also provided an opportunity to strengthen knowledge sharing between Australia and the Netherlands, particularly in agriculture, water management and food production.

The Ambassador toured several Dutchlinked businesses and organisations, including protected cropping, dairy, horticulture and food manufacturing operations. Visits included Aussie Pride Produce near Tallygaroopna, Toorangie Pastoral near Numurkah, Katunga Fresh, Seeka Australia in Bunbartha and Noumi, highlighting the region’s strong agricultural capability and

When Denis Bace was just three years old, he picked up a power tool and proceeded to remove a car headlight.

“He’s been around cars since he could walk,” Ilirjan said with a laugh.

Vince Casuscelli, who saw more than job enthusiasm. He said Denis’s drive to learn across the board—from classic models to highend vehicles and emerging technology—made him the right choice for a long-term company investment.

Fourteen years on, Denis is now a full-time apprentice at Ken Muston Automotive. He had a head-start through a year-long School-Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship (SBAT), balancing his school studies at Greater Shepparton Secondary College with a GOTAFE course and hands-on experience in paid work.

“It’s all about finding the right pathway, and the right fit,” she said. “It’s been wonderful to see Denis find both for his future.”

His dad, Ilirjan, rushed in to save the headlight - and his son – from damage. But he knew then Denis would likely follow in his footsteps as a motor mechanic.

Supporting the journey was GSSC Head Start Coordinator Caz Curnow, who helped connect and guide Denis, his family, his school and his employer.

“Working on cars is like relaxation for me,” Denis said. “I love it - I just get in the zone.”

OPERATION SECURUS NABS SIX OFFENDERS Police made six arrests in six days last week under Operation Securus, a newly launched retail theft taskforce targeting repeat and aggressive shoplifters.

Five men and one woman, all aged in their 30s, were arrested. More than 50 charges have been laid, with alleged thefts totalling $25,000.

Police say they will continue working with retailers to identify repeat offenders following a recent Retail Forum in Shepparton.

Intelligence shows repeat offenders are responsible for more than 70 per cent of retail thefts in Shepparton this year.

WINTER ROAD AND TRACK CLOSURES

Visitors to Victoria’s parks and forests are being reminded that majority of the seasonal road and track closures will begin from 11 June, following the King’s Birthday long weekend.

The temporary closures make it safer for motorists and reduce damage to remote roads and tracks that are vulnerable to winter conditions, including heavy rain and snow.

Anyone caught driving or riding on a closed road in Victoria’s parks and forests face a maximum penalty of up to $4,070 if prosecuted in court.

SMOKE ALARM ACTION DAY

The CFA and FRV joined fire services across Australia for Smoke Alarm Action Day on Monday, June 1, urging Victorians to test their smoke alarms and check they are correctly installed and in working order.

This year, CFA and FRV are asked households to go a step further and consider whether their smoke alarms provide enough warning if a fire starts while someone is asleep. Fire investigation data shows sleeping areas are the most common points of ignition in residential fires that result in serious injury or death.

The 2026-27 Victorian State Budget is one that “underdelivers” for rural and regional Victoria, with the Allan Labor Government’s exorbitant debt aligned with their citycentric spending and cost blowouts. A budget that is full of higher debt, higher taxes, higher interest repayments, cost blowouts and delays. $15 billion gone in rorts on Big Build sites that could have provided the investment and services our community needs such as fixing our roads, investment in housing, health, transport services, infrastructure and community services. It is also a disgrace that Labor has made further cuts to key portfolio areas including agriculture and regional development. It is hard to fathom that interest payments are heading towards $1 million per hour and rising debt will continue to place pressures on future budgets and service delivery.

We know that Victorians are experiencing ongoing cost of living pressures and Labor increasing the state debt will only place further strain on families and household budgets. Every Victorian is paying the price.

Retail Crime Forum

I recently attended the Shepparton Retail Crime Forum by Victoria Police, which gave the community an update on Operation Securus, a dedicated team of police who are hitting the streets of Shepparton in targeting the removal of violent, aggressive and intimidating behaviour as well as retail theft. Police at the forum said this behaviour will not be tolerated and everyone deserves to feel safe at work and to feel safe and secure in the community. There has already been arrests made with more than 50 charges laid. This operation is a first for regional Victoria, focusing initially on the Shepparton CBD before expanding to Mooroopna and Tatura areas. The forum was well attended, with more than 80 people hearing from our local police. Thank you to all of our dedicated police who serve our communties every single day.

Inaugural Youth Forum

The inaugural Shepparton Electorate Youth Leadership Forum was a great success, led by Safa Zahir who brought more than 28 School Captains and Student Leaders from across the Shepparton District electorate to participate in the forum. It was a night full of networking, brainstorming and having their voices heard. I was incredibly inspired by the strong attendance, contributions and the diversity of students who participated as well as the issues they put forward as young leaders in their communities. A broad range of topics were presented including opportunities for younger people, equity, social awareness and cohesion, relationships, leadership, communication and economic literacy. As their local State Member of Parliament, I want to be connected to the issues that our youth face today and I will continue to listen and advocate for our youth.

“This plan means our roads will be properly maintained and invested, our health services will be supported and backed, and community infrastructure will be invested and delivered where needed.”

MARKING a major milestone in this longstanding partnership, SPC Global donated its one millionth kilogram of food to Shepparton Foodshare on Wednesday, May 27. This equates to around four million serves of everyday staples over the past 14 years and comes at a time when demand for Foodshare’s services has never been higher.

With cost-of-living pressures squeezing household budgets and forcing many across the region to cut back on essentials, Foodshare is providing a vital lifeline to a growing number of community members.

In recent years, Shepparton Foodshare has recorded year-on-year demand growth of approximately 30 per cent, rising to 40 per cent in the most recent year, driven by increasing need across diverse communities.

While Foodshare has redistributed more than five million kilograms of food — the equivalent of around 10 million meals — through registered agencies including emergency relief services, schools, community meal programs, faith organisations and neighbourhood houses, demand continues to rise.

“Demand for our services continues to grow, and partnerships like the one we share with SPC are absolutely critical,” Executive Officer Dee Healy said.

“SPC were our first food donor in 2012, and locals know they’ve long been the backbone of this community. This is just another example of their support.

“They also provided our first warehouse when Foodshare was starting and have been incredibly responsive ever since, even in times of crisis. During the recent bushfires, we needed culturally appropriate food for areas... and they delivered, arriving with a truck and pallets of baked beans.

“We’re incredibly grateful. We couldn’t have achieved what we have over the years without the one million kilos of food they’ve provided,” Dee said.

As Australia’s oldest agri-food business, operating for more than 100 years, SPC Global Chief Supply Chain Officer, Moataz Ahmad said the milestone reflects the company’s strong sense of responsibility to the community.

Door closed on historical home REPRESENTING a rare chapter in Australia’s architectural story, the remarkable yet modest 1920s ‘knitlock’ house at 116 Knight Street in the heart of Shepparton is not only an aesthetically unique and historically significant part of the region’s, if not the country’s, history, but also a tangible link to a distinctive period in Australia’s architectural past.

Built using an innovative interlocking concrete system patented

by Walter Burley Griffin, architectural designer of Canberra, in 1917, and further developed and refined for practical application with his wife Marion Mahony, the house was constructed by Shepparton businessman John Sandy in 1923 as a demonstration home. It showcased how efficiently and affordably the interlocking concrete tile system could be used to build homes in regional areas.

With a design ethos centred on ‘democratising the home’ to advance social equity through the ‘owner-builder’ ideal, the system offered a low-cost, mass-produced housing solution to address severe post-World War I material and labour shortages. The modular structure of interlocking precast concrete blocks, secured with steel rods, appealed to Mr Sandy, who sought to prove regional Victorians did not need to wait for expensive, scarce timber and brick shipments from Melbourne. Instead, they could

achieve immediate builds and modern, well-designed living spaces, allowing everyday families to construct their own homes without becoming burdened by debt.

The only knitlock house in Shepparton, the unusual interwar residence, with its segmented concrete walls, prominent roofline, steep gable and large bay window, remains a striking example of innovative design. It reflects a postwar aspiration for accessible home ownership while linking the region to some of the most influential figures in Australia’s design history.

Regrettably, despite its cultural significance and local historical interest, 116 Knight Street missed out on enduring protection under the council’s Heritage Overlay this month when Amendment C242gshe, an attempt to introduce statutory protection, was voted down by councillors.

With the property’s owner objecting partly due to maintenance concerns, and more broadly because the motion covered four properties including some in dilapidated condition, councillors ultimately rejected the amendment to avoid imposing what they deemed unfair financial and maintenance obligations on local landowners.

or full demolition at the owner’s discretion, the question must be asked: what do we, as a region, collectively lose when a home such as 116 Knight Street—an invaluable record of the past, capturing a snapshot of both aspiration and historical circumstance—is potentially lost from our neighbourhood forever?

Regional journalism too important to dilute, says CPA COUNTRY Press Australia (CPA) supports the core purpose of the News Bargaining Incentive, to encourage major digital platforms to enter into fair commercial agreements with eligible Australian news publishers.

The NBI must remain focused on that purpose.

Regional, rural and independent publishers have been among the most exposed to the market power of global digital platforms. They employ journalists, produce public interest journalism, serve local communities and carry the obligations of professional news publishing. It is essential that the NBI delivers practical support to those publishers, not only to the largest media companies.

CPA supports sensible measures to ensure small and medium publishers are not excluded from commercial agreements. We recognise the concern that platforms could seek to satisfy their obligations through a limited number of agreements with major media companies.

The scheme should be designed to encourage fair dealing with genuine regional, rural and

independent publishers that produce covered news content and employ professional journalists.

However, CPA is concerned by proposals to divert a portion of NBI levy funds into a discretionary grants program.

The NBI is not intended to become a general media grants scheme. Its purpose is to incentivise commercial agreements between platforms and eligible news publishers. Where a platform elects not to enter sufficient commercial agreements and a charge is collected, those funds should be returned directly and transparently to eligible news publishers that are investing in journalism.

Top-slicing NBI funds into a supplementary grants pool would risk changing the character of the scheme. It could make the NBI look less like a bargaining incentive and more like a revenueraising mechanism followed by government redistribution. That would be a serious policy risk and could strengthen arguments from platforms that the scheme is simply a tax rather than an incentive to support commercial agreements for news.

It would also risk diverting funds away from professional publishers employing journalists and producing public interest news. A grants program would inevitably introduce delay, discretion, administration and uncertainty. It may also create pathways for NBI money to flow to organisations that do not meet the same standards, obligations or employment commitments as professional news publishers.

If government wishes to support news deserts, emerging publishers, community media, multicultural media or underrepresented voices through grants, that should be done through a separate program and separate appropriation, such as the News Media Assistance Program. It should not be funded by carving money out of the NBI. CPA’s position is clear.

Any NBI distribution mechanism should remain directly tied to eligible news businesses, covered news content, professional editorial standards and the employment of journalists.

The survival of regional and independent journalism is too important for the NBI to be diluted or redirected. The scheme must remain focused on its original purpose, requiring the global platforms that benefit from Australia’s news ecosystem to support the professional publishers and journalists who sustain it.

“THIS was something that might sound pretty boring, which is about getting all your reporting in one place, so that when you want a number, you can get the number, and the number is the same the next day and it’s accessible,” said Dr Burns.

“There’s actually some incredible barriers to people ... being able to get that data and information,” she said. “The research was about how hard it was, and asking why, and then exploring why this is so difficult for people who actually want to get on and do the work.”

The project demonstrates the value of locally embedded research, where partnerships between universities and community organisations deliver practical solutions to regional challenges.

David Tennant, former FamilyCare CEO, said the research helps solve a longstanding problem for agencies.

“When I started the organisation in 2010, for about 10 years the one thing that used to drive me mad was whenever anybody asked me how many people are you assisting at any given moment, it was an impossible question to answer quickly, because we had half a dozen different funding streams, three or four levels of government, all of them collecting information in a slightly different way, which meant that for us to answer such a basic question was nigh on impossible.

The project was supported by local philanthropist Vaughan Bradshaw through the Bradshaw Family Initiative.

“The concept of having a data set, one set of data that helps provide, takes away a lot of the admin work and gives people meaningful numbers around what outcomes they’re having; streamlining that empowers people in an organisation,” said Mr Bradshaw.

“Providing services to the community is incredibly complex, and the data you get is not straightforward,” he said. “It also flows into getting funding. Having clear data allows greater ability to create consistent funding, and for me that’s something that resonated.”

La Trobe Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Sue Bennett said the milestone underscored the university’s commitment to expanding research opportunities in regional Australia.

The ceremony also recognised students who have balanced study with significant life commitments, including

valedictorian Amanda McDonald.

Amanda completed her Masters of Business Administration online through La Trobe while working full-time, supporting a family member through cancer treatment and caring for four nieces and nephews during the COVID pandemic.

Amanda now works as a Senior Project Lead in the early years department at Greater Shepparton City Council. She said the flexibility of online study, combined with access to campus support was key to her success.

Like Amanda, Bachelor of Nursing graduate Sarah Minotti balanced course requirements with full-time work and family responsibilities. At one point, she juggled three jobs while completing her degree.

“I have worked in the medical admin sector since I finished high school and always wanted to do nursing but never felt it was the right time, especially while my kids were little,” Sarah said.

“I decided to take a chance and go back to studying. Having La Trobe in Shepparton made that easier to achieve.” She is now completing hr graduate year at GV Health and hopes to further her education to become a critical care nurse.

Warnock was a little down on his usual numbers last week, but Rochester was dominant with its 110 point win. The Saints face a rampant Fraser Hicks was the top rated player, now the league’s 16th ranked player.

His battle with Chris Welsh, who had 158 points for Benalla in the same game, but Hicks is coming off a 34 disposal and 10 clearance game against Kyabram. KYABRAM (6th) v MOOROOPNA (9th)

Kai Madgwick led all comers with 45 disposals in the game between these teams last season. His form has continued in 2025, averaging 32.8 disposals (5th in the league). Star Kyabram defender Brad Whitford had 29 touches last year and has been in terrific form, ranked 27th overall in the league. Jack Russell dominated last year, topping the game for tackles (12) and also having 31 disposals. He is currently the 8th ranked player in the competition. Dan Tuddenham’s five goals for the Cats last week was a match winning performance against Seymour and with support from Coby James (140 ranking points), Keelin Betson (11 tackles) and Dom Gugliotti (28 disposals at 89% efficiency) they seem to have their season back on track.

Prediction: Kyabram by 28 points.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Round 7, 2025 Kyabram won by 70 points.

SEYMOUR (4th) v ROCHESTER (8th)

When they last met Rochester won the clearances +15, hit outs +32, and had 12 more inside 50s. They did, however, lose the tackle count 65-91 to the Lions and scraped home by nine points. Rochester is coming off its biggest score of the season, 161 points against Benalla, while Seymour didn’t score a goal in the first half of its match and despite kicking eight goals to seven after half time lost by 17 points. Riley Mason kicked four of those eight goals, but the Lions had no other multiple goalkickers. Mitch Trewhella was back to his best on the weekend, kicking three goals to go with 36 disposals, and his match up with Nic Quigg in the middle will be a highlight of this game.

Prediction: Seymour by 7 points.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Round 10, 2025 - Rochester won by 9 points.

TATURA (12th) v SHEPP SWANS (3rd)

Mark Kovacevic had a massive 75 hit outs and was the top ranked player (159 points) when these teams played last year. He will be missing, which will make life a bit easier for Tatura big man Ryan Young, but nothing else points to a Tatura upset. The Bulldogs remain the only winless team in the league after eight rounds, but continue to provide some highlights through the statistical returns of players like Tom Sullivan, Jimmy Bennett, Keiran Andrew and Harry Murdoch. Ethan Warburton remains a Top 10 player in the league, across half back for the Swans, while brother Ollie had 18 disposals and kicked a goal for Carlton in the VFL on the weekend.

Prediction: Swans by 54 points.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Round 15, 2025 - Swans by 89 points.

MANSFIELD (5th) v SHEPP BEARS (1st)

Last time these teams played, in week one of the 2025 finals series, ruckman Ash Holland was the highest rated player (169 ranking points), Billy Hogan kicked five goals and guided his team to victory and Luke Smith had a game high 31 touches. Smith and Holland are in terrific form, but Hogan missed last week’s game as the Eagles surrendered a 28 point half time lead to have the first draw of the season with Shepp Swans. Sam Thomson has been a star for the Eagles, while Callum Brown now has 15 goals for the season after bagging another three. He kicked only 12 for the entire season last year. He and Nathan Buchanan were the only multiple goalkickers for the Eagles and they face a defensive unit that is has given almost 100 points less than the next best defence.

Prediction: Bears by 15 points.

Cohen Paul took 5 intercept marks for Euroa in last year’s game and, if he plays down back instead of in attack like he did last weekend, he could line up on another VFL listed player in Hugh Byrne (if he misses selection with North Melbourne, who had a bye last weekend). Sam Reid returned for Echuca last week with 26 disposals, while ruckman Darby Jones kicked his third bag of 3 goals for the season.

HOW NEALE DANIHER’S INFLUENCE CONVINCED NO. 1 PICK TO JOIN DEES SEN

Former AFL ruckman Jeff White credits much of his career to late footy icon Neale Daniher.

Daniher, who passed away last month after a long and courageous battle with MND, coached White across just about the entirety of his career.

White, who was taken at pick No. 1 in the 1994 draft, had Daniher as an assistant for his three seasons at Fremantle from 1995 to 1997.

Once Daniher took over at Melbourne in 1998, White effectively ended up following him back to Melbourne, where he’d be coached by the legend for his decade-long stretch in charge of the Dees from 1998 to 2007.

Having played such a big role in his career, White would often refer to Daniher as his second dad, and the ruckman revealed how having Daniher in his corner made his switch to the Dees an easy one.

“I did (call him my second dad),” White told SEN’s This Is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers.

“He was my assistant coach at Fremantle when I first went over to Freo, and he really got along with my dad quite well.

“I was a 17-year-old back then when he got drafted, moved to the other side of the other side of the country, and he’d become a bit of a father figure for me. Then that obviously continued with Melbourne.

“Looking back, it was quite funny, he was the actual one who told me through that three-year period if I was in the side or I wasn’t. He was the main one who would call me.

“We had that sort of relationship where we could, you know, be very open and transparent. A part of me

was like I want to be in the side, but we developed such a really good relationship.

“Hence, the reason when he got the head job at Melbourne, it became a really easy decision for me to go to Melbourne.

“Cameron Schwab was the one who

actually selected me (at Fremantle), but then he took up the head role at Melbourne.

“He had a really good relationship with Neale and obviously with myself… I mean, I spoke to a number of clubs when I came back which was my due diligence.

“But when Neale was officially made the coach, it sort of made the decision really easy… it just all fell into place that way.”

White was amongst a group of guests who paid tribute to Daniher in this week’s special edition paying tribute to the Australian football icon.
