One resolution worth making

If you’ve been around on this earth long enough, you’ll know it’s not wise to make too many new year resolutions.

Too easy to make and just as easy to break!

But in my book there are at least two resolutions that should stand as stone when we enter every new year: 1. Make an effort to be kind and considerate to all who are in our orbit. We can’t expect it from others unless we show it ourselves. Even if others don’t always rise to the occasion.

2. Second – and more important with every passing year - is not to procrastinate. Don’t keep putting off things that need attention just because we’d rather not think about them. They have a way of catching up with us sooner or later, and often in worse ways simply because we’ve been trying to avoid them for too long.

A good case in point is planning for aged care – either for yourself or someone you love. Do you know what’s out there these days? What’s involved in finding out about entitlements? All the different options at hand? They range from getting just a bit of support around the home to keep on top of things (Support at Home); through to independent living in your own unit within a retirement village (Independent Living Units); right through to fully supported aged care facilities (Residential Care).

Each has pros and cons, and each has important processes around it, linking back to an assessment which first needs to be made via the government’s My Aged Care system.

If we can help point you in the right direction in regard to any of that, we’ll be pleased to do so. Getting on top of your aged care needs - or those of a loved one - might well be the most important resolution you can make for 2026.

AFTER 24 years of service, The Honourable Wendy Lovell MP has announced she will not recontest the seat of Northern Victoria Region in the November 2026 state election.

In a statement, Ms Lovell reflected on her career in politics, saying that it has been a great privilege to represent the people of Northern Victoria Region, and before that, North Eastern Province, in Victorian Parliament.

“Shepparton has been my home for my entire adult life and the opportunity to represent the region

I care so deeply about has been the great honour of my life,” she said.

“I thank the people of Northern Victoria Region and North Eastern Province for electing me six times.”

Over a period of seven years, Ms Lovell has served as Cabinet Minister in the Ballieu and Napthine governments, as Minister for Housing, and Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development, Deputy Leader for the Government and Opposition (Council).

“I am particularly gratified that programs I introduced, such as

Education First Youth Foyers, have become embedded in Victoria’s housing response.

“The Victorian Liberal Party’s values embody the aspirations of all Victorians, and I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to represent those values as a country Liberal MP,” she said.

“I would like to thank those members of the Liberal Party who have served as the chair or as an executive member of my electorate council and the thousands of party volunteers who have supported me over the years. I particularly thank my current chair John Lithgow who has held this position for many years.”

Standing together ahead of Australia Day DAY OF MOURNING… Shepparton Reconciliation Group will again invite the community to gather on January 25 at the William Cooper statue, corner of Nixon and Welsford Streets, to acknowledge the grief and loss experienced by First Nations people since colonisation and to stand together in solidarity ahead of Australia Day.

ON the eve of Australia Day, the Shepparton Region Reconciliation Group will again invite the community to stand in solidarity with First Nations people at a Day of Mourning gathering in central Shepparton.

The event will be held on Sunday, January 25, at the William Cooper statue on the corner of Nixon and Welsford Streets, beginning at 5.45pm for a 6pm start.

Now in its second year, the gathering follows a strong inaugural event in 2025, which drew a crowd of around 70 people, delighting organisers and highlighting strong community support for reflection and reconciliation.

The Day of Mourning acknowledges

the profound grief and loss experienced by Aboriginal people since colonisation, while also recognising resilience, survival and leadership. It honours the legacy of Yorta Yorta man William Cooper, who helped organise the original Day of Mourning in 1938 to draw national attention to injustice faced by Aboriginal people.

The Shepparton Region Reconciliation Group says the event provides a space for allies and community members to reflect, listen and recommit to meaningful reconciliation.

All are welcome to attend. Organisers recommend bringing a chair.

HOOKED on Shepparton is a new familyfriendly summer event coming to Victoria Park Lake on Friday, January 23, from 4pm to 9pm.

Greater Shepparton City Council invites community members to register and join this all-ages competition, featuring prizes for Tagged Fish, Biggest Catch, Young Angler, Mystery Weight, and Lucky Spot.

Alongside the competition, there will be food trucks, family friendly activities, trade stalls, live entertainment, giveaways and more.

“Events like Hooked On Shepparton are great for the community, encouraging people to participate in outdoor activities and utilise wonderful open spaces such as the lake, which is key for a healthy population,” said Councillor Fern Summer.

Hooked On Shepparton is a free family event for everyone to enjoy. Remember to bring your own fishing rods, bait, chairs, hat, suncreens, and mosquito spray.

MARUNGI STREET STAGE 2 WORKS

GREATER Shepparton City Council has advised that the second stage of construction works to upgrade the stormwater drainage network along Marungi Street, Shepparton, commenced on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Marungi Street is open, with the section of road eastbound from the Nixon/Marungi Street roundabout closed for approximately one-to-two weeks, pending construction progress.

Council said every effort would be made to maintain access to private properties during construction and asked road users and pedestrians to follow all signage, detours and directions provided by traffic controllers.

Due to unknown services, wet weather and unforeseen circumstances, the project’s completion is now expected by the end of March 2026, weather permitting.

SPEED REDUCTION ON TOOLAMBA ROAD

GREATER Shepparton City Council has announced traffic management and temporary speed reductions on Toolamba Road, between Simson Road and the Midland Highway, Mooroopna.

As part of the GV Link Enterprise Project, service installation will occur from Monday, January 12 to Friday, March 27, 2026, between 7am and 7pm, weather permitting. During this period, the road will be under traffic management, including reduced speed limits and localised lane diversions.

BOWLS AWARD RECOGNISES LONG-TIME CONTRIBUTORS

LONG-SERVING contributors to lawn bowls across the region have been recognised in the December round of the $10,000 Warramunda Community Care Bowler of the Year Award.

December winners were Sandy Thomas (Mooroopna), Helen Chapman (Kyabram), Archie Ellis (Barooga), Robert Clough (Bendigo East), and Robert Jackson (Talbot).

The monthly award recognises on- and off-rink contributions, with two bowlers selected from each of the five playing areas. Since launching in October, 82 bowlers from 43 clubs have been nominated, with 30 recipients recognised so far.

bushfire crisis continued from front page MORE than 400 CFA personnel have battled the Longwood fire since it broke out along the Hume Freeway on Wednesday, January 7, supported by 70 aircraft deployed across the state.

One fatality has been confirmed in the Longwood area. Victoria Police made the tragic discovery on Sunday, where human remains were found about 100m from a vehicle after crews accessed a fire-affected section of Yarck Road at Gobur.

The individual has been identified as cattle farmer Max Hobson, who is the first victim of the 2026 bushfires.

The cause of the Longwood fire, which has destroyed more than 150 structures, remains under investigation.

In some towns, such as Ruffy, it’s estimated that half of residents have lost homes or structures, and local facilities including the historic primary school have been destroyed.

Paddocks and infrastructure are also heavily impacted, with livestock losses significant and clean-up just beginning as it becomes safe to do so. Longwood and Longwood East residents have been told to boil water after fire shutdown the water treatment plant.

Recovery efforts are underway as firefighters work to secure firegrounds and clear roads, so aid can reach impacted communities.

A State of Disaster has been declared across multiple local government areas, enabling authorities to coordinate resources and enforce evacuations as required. Meanwhile, a Total Fire Ban remained in effect in the North East and North Central fire districts on Monday to reduce the risk of further ignitions.

The State and Federal Government have announced a $19.5M support package for affected communities, covering relief payments, fodder supplies for farmers, emergency accommodation and mental health support.

“We’ve had farmers in here that are 60, 70, 80 years old, and they’ve got tears in their eyes and they’re showing us photos of stock that’s injured, burning sheds, homes lost. Like many others, I’m just trying to do my bit.”

Greater Shepparton residents have also banded together to donate items to fire-affected residents and to support CFA volunteers.

Azem Elmaz and People Supporting People are another example, with the organisation preparing meals for volunteers on the front line.

While cooler weather this week may provide some relief from Friday’s extreme conditions, which saw temperatures of 43 degrees and strong winds, several major fires are expected to burn for weeks, with conditions remaining dangerous and dynamic.

Residents in impacted areas are urged to continue to monitor official sources such as the VicEmergency app and website, to follow evacuation orders and be prepared to act at short notice if required to do so.

In just one day, the local business supplied around 30,000 rounds of ammunition directly to affected farmers, with similar numbers donated by members of the public and industry partners in the days that followed. Owner Steven Threlfall and staff have spent long hours coordinating donations and distributing supplies across fire-affected regions, supported by national firearms and ammunition suppliers.

“One young couple came in about the destruction of their burned stock. They bought some ammunition and I donated some, and that sparked me thinking there’s a need here for that type of thing, and I’m in a position to donate and get the firearms industry behind me to help too,” said Mr Threlfall, who said donations had flown in from every state in Australia and

Farmers urged to register for support LEADING rural charity Rural Aid has issued an urgent call for all Victorian farmers to register for assistance as bushfires continue to burn across the state, causing widespread damage to farmland, major stock losses, and destruction of critical agricultural infrastructure.

With fires impacting several regions and conditions remaining volatile, producers are facing escalating threats to livestock, crops, fencing, sheds, machinery, water supplies, and their livelihoods. Rural Aid warns the situation remains extremely dangerous and stresses that registration is critical to ensure help can be delivered immediately.

Rural Aid is urging every primary producers – whether already impacted or at risk – to register now, so assistance can be mobilised without delay as the emergency unfolds.

CEO John Warlters said registering with Rural Aid is one of the most important steps farmers can take right now.

“We are seeing fires tear through productive farmland, destroy fencing and sheds, and leave

farmers facing heartbreaking stock losses,” Mr Warlters said. “These aren’t isolated incidents – large parts of the state are being impacted, and many producers are under immediate and extreme pressure.”

Rural Aid provides support to registered farmers at no cost, including: Financial assistance for urgent and unexpected expenses • Professional counselling and wellbeing support for farmers and their families • • Emergency hay deliveries to support livestock Water deliveries for drinking and household needs • Volunteer assistance through the Farm Army program for response and recovery.

• Farmers are strongly urged to register immediately at faa.ruralaid.org.au or by calling 1300 327 624. Registering now ensures Rural Aid can act fast and deliver critical support as fires continue to threaten communities across Victoria.

AIR WING RESCUES FAMILY AND THEIR CAT POLICE Air Wing crews have rescued two generations of a family and their pet cat after bushfire destroyed their remote Caveat property earlier this week.

Two women aged 59 and 82, and a 92-year-old man, contacted emergency services on Friday afternoon seeking help to evacuate their isolated property on Caveat-Dropmore Road, after attempting to manage dangerous conditions for several days.

The family lost their home to fire earlier in the week and were forced to shelter in a shipping container as the blaze swept through the area on Wednesday, January 7, before spending Friday night in their vehicle.

With road access cut off, the Police Air Wing was deployed shortly before 7am on Saturday, January 10, landing at the property around 8.30am. The trio, along with their cat Grisha, affectionately known as “Bubba”, were airlifted to Seymour.

They were assessed by ambulance paramedics on arrival, with the cat also given water by syringe. It is believed the 82-year-old woman’s hair was scorched by the fire and she was treated for burns to her hands.

Air Wing Tactical Flight Officer LSC Brittany Smith said the scale of destruction was confronting.

“The destruction we can see from the air is heartbreaking,” she said. “By no means do we encourage people to shelter in shipping containers, however on this occasion this family is extremely lucky. It was good we were able to get in and get them out. We were glad we could provide assistance when they needed us.”

DEVASTATING bushfires are reaching across Northern Country and Central V i c tor i a to m a ny of S h e pp a r to n’s neighbours. It’s been a challenging time for our farmers, rural residents and the wider community with locals fighting to defend their properties and travel cut off across the state.

On Sunday, January 11, the State and Federal governments released a joint statement announcing an initial $19.5M funding package to begin the recovery process.

The package includes various channels seek help, the largest sum of $10M devoted to the Victorian Farmers Federation’s (VFF) emergency fodder program.

those needing immediate accommodation, $5M towards keyworkers to assist in navigating legal and financial support, and another $1M into group counselling services. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said these services will be bundled together as the ‘Recovery Support Program’ to create,’ “one single point of help so people who’ve lost so much don’t have to deal with government red tape.”

Adapted from the State Governments Personal Hardship Assistance Program, the funding can be accessed by eligible affected Victorians as one-off payments of $680 for adults and $340 for children, or a total of $2,380 per family.

In a statement on January 9, Member for Northern Victorian Wendy Lovell urged to “make these payments available immediately,” after attending a community meeting in Seymour.

Locally, Trelly’s Outdoor is working directly with farmers, receiving and distributing ammunition to help in culling injured livestock, receiving an estimated 50,000 rounds in community donations, with at least 2,000 rounds donated in the brief time The Adviser was at the business to learn more. Mayor Shane Sali has confirmed another donation event is currently in the works, saying that Saturday’s donations are “already making a huge difference.”

Regional manufacturers set priorities for next wave of growth MANUFACTURERS from across Greater Shepparton, Campaspe, and Moira have identified clear priorities to lift productivity and support the next wave of regional manufacturing growth in 2026 and beyond.

An industry workshop held in October which involved 19 businesses that represent more than 3,500 local jobs. The workshop was jointly hosted by the three councils in partnership with the Committee for Echuca Moama (C4EM) and

Greater Shepparton City Council CEO Fiona Le Gassick said the discussion highlighted the importance of regional collaboration to secure long-term growth.

“Collectively the region’s manufacturing sector contributes over $5.5 billion annually and employs more than 6,000 locals. By working together across councils and industry, we’re building a strategic platform to secure growth, innovation and resilience for decades to come,” she said.

The ‘Manufacturing Across the Region’ workshop reaffirmed the region’s position as Victoria’s leading regional manufacturing hub, underpinned by strong agricultural supply chains, reliable irrigation, strategic freight links and a skilled, committed workforce.

However, participants also identified shared constraints, including energy reliability and cost, housing supply, workforce skills, digital connectivity and freight infrastructure.

Campaspe Shire Council CEO Pauline Gordon said coordinated planning was critical to addressing these challenges.

“Manufacturers across our shires face common pressures, from supply chains to workforce and housing. Coordinated planning ensures we can invest effectively and advocate together for what industry needs,” she said.

Five priority areas were confirmed and documented in a summary report: Housing and Liveability; Energy Reliability and Cost; Workforce and Skills; Transport and Freight Access; and Digital Connectivity. These

Moira Shire Council CEO Matthew Morgan said a unified regional approach would strengthen industry performance.

“Automation, digital capability and freight connectivity are top of mind for our local manufacturers. A coordinated regional response will strengthen productivity and resilience across council boundaries,” he said.

Immediate follow-up actions include targeted work with energy partners on grid reliability and large-user tariffs, collaboration with education and training providers on specialised manufacturing skills pathways, and integration of freight and bridge priorities into regional transport strategies.

Committee for Echuca-Moama Chair Tim Ford said manufacturing remained central to regional prosperity.

“Manufacturing is vital to the strength of our communities. Working together across boundaries positions us to deliver stronger outcomes for industry and employment,” he said.

The summary report, Manufacturing Across the Region – Regional Manufacturing Workshop Summary, October 2025, will be released on participating council and committee websites in the new year.

With more than 100 cafés and strong customer ratings, the result highlighted the strength of local small businesses and set a positive tone for the year.

MOVE hosted the Ford Falcon GT Nationals, attracting more than 4,000 visitors and hundreds of vehicles from across the country. Banmira Specialist School opened its new junior campus at the former Wanganui Park secondary college site, expanding inclusive education options.

Shepparton also celebrated the launch of its own MONOPOLY board, showcasing local landmarks and the region’s agricultural identity.

Arts and city changes Shepparton Art Museum opened Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio, the only Victorian stop on the national tour. The exhibition attracted strong crowds and many first-time visitors. Council also introduced a Touch n Go parking trial in the CBD, offering a new digital payment option for drivers.

Inclusion and leadership GV Pride celebrated 20 years of supporting LGBTQIA+ communities across the Goulburn Valley. Economic inclusion The penultimate month of the year saw the launch of Greater Shepparton’s first public First Nations Business Directory. The initiative aims to strengthen local procurement, support Indigenous owned businesses and build stronger economic partnerships across the region.

Victorians led the nation with the Victoria’s Statewide Treaty Bill becoming law on November 13, 2025, after receiving Royal Assent, making Victoria the first Australian state to create a treaty framework with First Nations peoples. The law sets up processes for a First Peoples’ voice, truth-telling and a permanent representative body.

Big and small, bike safety is for all BIKE riding is a lot of fun, but accidents do happen. Many children make their way to school riding a bike, so lets refresh what we know about staying safe on two wheels: • Wear a helmet at all times and ensure it fits properly and is worn correctly so it will protect the face, head, and brain in the case of an accident.

• Use bike lanes wherever possible, and if riding on pathways, keep to the left and use a bell to signal others. Remember to always give way to pedestrians and to get off your bike and walk across busy intersections,

using crossings wherever possible.

• Check both ways and do not rush waiting to cross a road. Try using all your senses.

Can you hear anything approaching?

• Do not ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open suddenly.

• Bike riders must obey road rules just like cars. Stop at stop signs, obey traffic signals, and travel in the same direction as the traffic.

• Always ride with two hands on the handlebars, and ride in single file, rather than a big group if travelling with friends.

Parents and carers should ensure they ride as much as possible with their children on the road, to let them practice their skills. This summer period between holidays and the school term are a great opportunity to put safety into practice and teach critical skills and experience before the bell rings. Riding together around the lake or to run errands such as picking up your weekly Adviser or milk will serve another purpose down the track when they are finally ready to ride to school on their own.

CORNES: LACHIE NEALE STEPPING DOWN IS A WIN FOR BRISBANE SEN

KANE Cornes believes the news of Lachie Neale standing down as captain from the Brisbane Lions will be a blessing for the football club, citing opportunities for others and the chance to move on at season’s end a beneficial outcome for the reigning premiers.

Neale, who turns 33 in May, has had a rough run with injuries in the past couple of seasons.

And despite becoming a Brownlow medallist twice, as well as being an important cog in Brisbane’s last two premierships, Cornes believes this is a perfect opportunity for the Lions to enter a transition period with their midfield.

Speaking on the The Eddy Cornes Podcast, Cornes explains how the injection of youth can help this side evolve into being an even stronger side in 2026 and beyond.

“I think it’s an absolute win for Brisbane, from a footy point of view,” Cornes said.

“As much as you’ll say well Lachie Neale is a dual Brownlow Medallist and his performances in both Grand Finals have been nothing short of unbelievable.

"I thought he was the Norm Smith Medallist in 2024 and his second half in 2025 with that calf injury was something that I’ve never seen the likes of.

“But now, with the young players coming through at Brisbane, there are midfield minutes that need to be given to the Ashcroft brothers and (Jaspa) Fletcher’s going to end up being a midfielder.

"They’ve got another academy kid coming through (Dan Annable), so there are midfield minutes there that need to be given to the young generation coming through.

“And Lachie, at 32 with the issues now with his body, it’s the perfect

opportunity at the end of this year for Brisbane to let him go to suit his family life and head to probably West Coast or Fremantle.”

Despite Neale being a former Docker, as well as having links in previous years to return to the club he was drafted to, Cornes thinks it’s Fremantle’s biggest rivals who would be the most likely destination for him – if he was to decide to leave at the end of the 2026 season.

“Probably West Coast you would think with where they’re at for another couple of years and extend his career,” Cornes said.

“I don’t think it’s a bad thing if he leaves at the end of this year, certainly from a footy point of view and we’ll see how it effects his on-field performance this year.”

From an even further on-field look at what the absence of Neale to the Lions

would mean to the reigning premiers, Cornes explains how the balance of their already star-studded midfield will improve from the change, dissecting the vulnerability they have defensively when it is occupied by the likes of the Ashcroft brothers and Neale.

“Even this year, there was a school of thought that when Lachie Neale had played, certainly from a defensive point of view throughout the midfield, that

there was a vulnerability there,” Cornes said.

“So (Josh) Dunkley is this outstanding defensive midfielder that they’ve got. (Jarrod) Berry is also of a similar ilk like they’re renowned for their defensive attributes as well as some of their offensive stuff. “(Will and Levi) Ashcroft, both of them are not defensively minded at all so it’s about getting that balance right in the midfield and Lachie is the same.

“These star midfielders don’t typically defend. They haven’t needed to. But that can come back to bite you if you don’t get the balance right through the midfield.

“And now with the issues with his body have started to pile up; he had the quad, he had the calf, that’s not going to get better with age.

"The injection of youth that Brisbane have got, they can’t be having the Ashcrofts play on the half forward line. It’s just not going to happen. And Lachie Neale is not going to do that.

“I think as much as Chris (Fagan) is painting it as a favour to Lachie, I think it would also be a favour to Brisbane if he ends up heading back at nearly the age of 33 with the drama that’s going to go on and the distraction that’s going to be there this year for the footy club in and around that and what a circus it has been.

“It’s not going to be a bad thing if he leaves.”

Brisbane begins their premiership defence with a home game against the Western Bulldogs in opening round in March.

The Lions will have an added incentive this season, as they look to be the first team since the 2013-2015 Hawks to win three premierships in a row.
