A mosaic of retail theft in Shepparton

By Aaron Cordy VICTORIAN Police undertook Operation Mosaic, targeting retail theft at Bunnings and Coles in Shepparton and Kialla, across Saturday and Sunday, December 13 and 14, catching 11 people stealing from the retail chains.

“Retail theft is not a victimless crime. We know it makes staff feel unsafe, but it also impacts the ability for small independent businesses to make a living,” said Proactive Policing Unit Senior Sergeant Shane Biderman. Continued Page 19

with Stage 1 of the project expected to commence in 2027, supported by $30M in Federal Government funding.

While Stage 1 will expand existing cancer services and improve facilities, a fully funded Stage 2 would be required to bring all cancer services under one roof, including chemotherapy, radiation oncology, specialist clinics, wellness programs and supportive care.

Mr Copulos said his family’s longstanding connection to GV Health and personal experiences with cancer had driven their decision to support the project.

Farewell to more than a job, to a community Community work has the potential to positively affect people’s lives and in the long run I think that is what has kept me in the job for so long.

Jan McRae SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE... Jan McRae (pictured) is celebrating 25 years of a rewarding and fulfilling career with Community Interlink in the home care sector. Over the years, she has worked across five different offices throughout the region. Above all, it is the many colleagues and clients she has worked with — and worked for — that she holds most dear. Jan is pictured with Goulburn Valley Health CEO, Matt Sharp.

TWENTY-FIVE years is a lifetime to work for one organisation. Jan McRae has seen many changes in that time working for Community Interlink as a Case Manager and Program Manager. But she has also had a rewarding and fulfilling career filled with great colleagues and memorable clients.

Retiring this year, Jan reflected on her time at Community Interlink, having worked in five different Cobram offices, two Shepparton offices, and three Benalla and Wodonga offices.

“25 years working for one organisation is

quite a long time and no doubt some wonder why I have stayed so long. That’s not difficult to answer,” said Jan. “I’ve had so many great colleagues. Honestly some of the best, kindest, most down to earth people I have ever met.”

“There are lots that I am still in touch with, some became great friends. Working together in human services does bring people together.”

Jan noted her feelings about the home care and disability support organisation with which she spent so much time. “I feel that Community

Interlink has set an excellent standard of working with kindness and compassion, starting where the client is, acknowledging difference and client choice.”

Jan can still remember most of her Clients, from the first few she had in the year 2000, as well as how soon she realised that a constant in the sector would be change.

“Dependent on government funding means you are always going to be subject to change,” she said.

Recently, Community Interlink has seen

transition from the Home Care Packages program to the new Support at Home program.

“Community Interlink has adapted and evolved for 33 years and I have every confidence that it will continue to evolve and will continue to provide great service,” said Jan. “Community work has the potential to positively affect people’s lives and in the long run I think that is what has kept me in the job for so long. My abiding memories will be of people and of achievement.”

HUGE NEWS!...The Archibald Prize 2026 is making its way to Shepparton Art Museum for the first time! Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) is thrilled to announce that it will host the Archibald Prize 2026, Australia’s most prestigious portraiture exhibition and one of the country’s most beloved annual art events.

SAM will be the only Victorian venue on the regional tour and the very first stop after the exhibition closes at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

ADVISER OFFICE CLOSURE

The Shepparton Adviser closed for the Christmas period on December 23 and will reopen to the public on Monday, January 12, 2026.

BIG BASH ON THE BIG SCREEN

THE community is invited to enjoy Big Bash on the Big Screen at Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton on Wednesday, January 7.

The free event will provide cricket activities, live entertainment and family fun leading up to the Melbourne Renegades v Perth Scorchers match which will be shown on the big screen starting at 7.15pm.

The lakeside precinct will offer food trucks and giant games. Young local talent will also be on display from 4pm with the Shepparton Girls’ All-Star Game, followed by an opportunity for young cricket enthusiasts to learn new skills with a clinic running from 5pm to 6pm.

GREENS LAKE TO CLOSE FOR NEW YEAR

GREENS Lake at Corop will be temporarily closed over the New Year’s period to ensure public safety. Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has implemented the closure each year since 2014, following advice from emergency services after a number of unsafe incidents.

The lake will close from 10 am on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, and reopen at 12 pm on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Visitors camping at the lake prior to the closure must remove their camps before leaving and all rubbish must be taken with them.

GMW’s Water Storage Services general manager, Jon McKeown, said safety remains the organisation’s top priority, and GMW continues to work closely with emergency

services to protect visitors.

SHEPPARTON POLICE CHASE ENDS IN ARREST

A 24-year-old Shepparton man was arrested after a high-speed police pursuit early Monday, December 15. Officers spotted his silver Ford sedan being driven erratically near Welsford and Fryers streets around 1.05am. With Air Wing support, police followed the vehicle along the Midland Highway. Stop sticks were deployed, and the car eventually crashed into a fire hydrant. The driver, uninjured, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly arrested. Police continue to investigate.

FRESH FACES AND PAINT AT FOODSHARE

Shepparton Foodshare have elected long-time board member Cheryl Hammer to step into the role of Chair, taking the reins from Jeremy Rensford, who has chaired the organisation for the past five years.

Jeremy will continue on the board alongside re-elected members: Jan Phillips, Russell Smith, Peter Thompson, Damien Wiloughby, Carolynne Frost, Seema Abdullah, Lyndon Galea, and Lauren Donnellan.

Jeremy congratulated Cheryl on her appointment and said he looks forward to continuing to work with her and other

board members to continue to improve the organisation.

“My journey began by taking minutes for the establishment committee in 2011, and then culminated in my appointment as a founding board member in 2012. I look forward to staying on as Board Director for another productive and impactful year for our community,” he said.

Foodshare has also unveiled a new 30-plusmetre-long mural by local artist Tank, at its Mooroopna warehouse. The striking mural will serve as a visitor attraction and adds interest to an otherwise very large blank wall, which has been inspired by the community and stakeholders.

STARLINK OVER GREATER SHEPPARTON

SpaceX’S Starlink satellite system was filmed flying over Greater Shepparton by a Toolamba resident, who sent in a video to the Adviser.

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation operated by Starlink Services, LLC, an international telecommunications provider.

SpaceX began launching Starlink satellites in 2019. As of May 2025, the constellation consists of over 7,600 mass-produced satellites in low Earth orbit.

The Christmas and New Year period for many people is a highlight of the year – bringing loved ones from far and wide to share gifts, enjoy special food and drink and, most important of all, spend precious time together.

continued from front page “MY family and I have supported GV Health for over 30 years,” he said. “I’ve watched the hospital grow and develop, but there’s never enough money to do everything that we need and deserve here in the Goulburn Valley.”

He reflected on earlier fundraising efforts that helped establish the existing Peter Copulos Cancer and Wellness Centre, which he says is no longer suitable for a growing regional population.

“With the increase in population and the incidence of cancer in our society, it’s no longer adequate,” Mr Copulos said. “Cancer is a terrible disease. It affects not just the patient, but their family and friends. The last thing you want is to have to attend multiple treatment centres all over the place.”

Under the pledge, $1M will be committed immediately to Stage 1 of the project, with a second $1M contingent on full funding being secured for Stage 2.

Mr Copulos also announced he would double his contribution from $1M to $2M if the Victorian Government commits to funding the final stage of the centre.

GV Health Chief Executive Matt Sharp said the donation went “above and beyond” and reflected an extraordinary commitment to the community.

“Peter, Maria and the entire Copulos family have been incredible supporters of GV Health over many years, directly impacting

BAZBALL FOUNDER DECLARES THE PHENOMENON “DEAD” SEN

THE creator of BazBall, Andrew Miller, has labelled the style of play dead after the second Ashes Test defeat in Brisbane.

Miller coined the term during 2022, shortly after Brendon McCullum was appointed as England's coach, as more of a prediction than anything.

While England hadn't played any Tests under McCullum when the phrase was first created, Miller could see the writing on the wall that things were going to change rapidly under the Kiwi and captain Ben Stokes following the departure of Chris Silverwood as coach.

"Fundamentally, I came up with the label as a prediction rather than a reaction," Miller told SEN Mornings.

"I think this is kind of why it stuck.

It was just an off-the-cuff remark in a podcast, when Brendon McCullum was appointed in May 2022.

"It was a couple of months before they played the first Test under him, and it was hardly a great leap of faith that with Brendon McCullum as the new Test coach, things were going to be different.

"I said 'Well, by midsummer we'll all be playing BazBall, won't we?'. It kind of snowballed from there, but it never really got defined.

"I suppose this is part of the problem with the word, and England loathed it from the outset, and I've got no issue

with that. The more you try to suppress something you don't want to talk about, the more people want to talk about it."

Since taking over, everything under McCullum and Stokes, including England's selection and tactics, has been geared towards winning in Australia in this series.

Miller is seeing signs that Stokes is moving away from what he's been preaching since taking over, as England's aggressive tactics and always positive approach have come unstuck in Perth and Brisbane.

"But I feel like it's got to that point that whatever we saw in the last Test is certainly not what it was at its height in 2022 and the 2023 Ashes," Miller said.

"In that home Ashes, they were in a zone that was quite something to behold, and they're not in that zone any more.

"I feel like that mentality has been lost, and it's not coming back. So, I've kind of assumed that it's over, even if England do fight back now.

"What Ben Stokes said the other day, basically taking the team to task saying that 'There's no place for weak men in my team', he's never said anything like that at all in his three and a half years as captain.

"He's been very nurturing, all about the team environment, all about trying to build up his players so you make them feel 100 feet tall.

"There's none of that now. He's

saying 'I don't care how you feel about this. I just want you to get over yourselves and get out there and fight for me'. That's not the mentality that England have gone into pretty much every other Test of his career as captain.

"For that reason, I believe BazBall is dead, and I don't think it's coming back."

If things continue to go downhill for England and McCullum, some Aussie greats have been floated as a potential replacement to take the side forward.
