HELD 13TH FEBRUARY 2024

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW 1

2

YOU SHOULD KNOW… THE SPEECH 13th February 2008, then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered an empassioned speech apologising to the Stolen Generations on behalf of the Australian Government.

5

Since Kevin Rudd made the National Apology to the Stolen Generations in 2008, that number has risen by 65 per cent.

YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT… ‘SORRY DAY’ AND THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL APOLOGY ARE TWO SEPARATE DAYS

Even though Aboriginal kids make up just 5.5 per cent of children aged 0-17 years in Australia, they represent 35 per cent of those placed in out-of-home care.

4

There are claims that there are more Indigenous children being removed today than any other time in Australian history. It's difficult to know, given many records prior to the early 90s were destroyed or kept erratically, but in 1993 there were only 2,419 Indigenous kids in out-of-home care."

6

9

7

Kevin Rudd did not apologise on behalf of every non-Indigenous Australian citizen, he did so on behalf of the Government. The Government, along with the Church, were the two main organisations who hold a level of culpability for the Stolen Generations.

YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT… THE HEALING FOUNDATION The Healing Foundation was established in 2009, one year after the Apology. According to their website, "The Healing Foundation is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation that partners with communities to address the ongoing trauma caused by actions like the forced removal of children from their families. Our work helps people create a different future."

YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT… THESE SONGS

YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT… ‘SORRY’ IS NOT JUST AN ADMISSION OF GUILT, IT IS ALSO AN EXPRESSION OF SORROW

YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT… ‘SORRY’ IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF HEALING Even though there are many legitimate reasons to feel let down by the apology, and the lack of action since then, it is still important to acknowledge the emotion felt by the many survivors who felt their stories had finally been acknowledged on this day, and by the many other Australians who joined in.

Songs have always been a unique and important method of storytelling, and for helping people find empathy for the experiences of others. Never has this been more true than the impact these songs have had on the national consciousness.

YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT… THE NATIONAL APOLOGY IS NOT INTENDED TO ‘FORGIVE AND FORGET’ Kevin Rudd's apology is not the end of the matters of the Stolen Generations. An apology and acknowledgement for the Stolen Generations was one fifth of one recommendation from the total 54 recommendations included in The Bringing Them Home report. Rudd was meant to fulfill a step in a guided process of reparation against human rights, not persuading Indigenous people to, 'Get over it', 'Move on', 'Let it go' or 'Forgive and Forget'.

8

Indigenous children aged 1-4 were 11 times more likely to be in out-of-home care than nonindigenous children in the same age group.

YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT… THE BRINGING THEM HOME REPORT The National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families was established by the Federal Attorney General in 1995. It was conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) and their final report, titled The Bringing Them Home report, was tabled in parliament in 1997.

It doesn't matter whether or not you were 'personally responsible'; you can claim a sense of nationalistic sorrow for the people affected by policies enacted in the name of Australia, the same way you can claim nationalistic pride in the sacrifices made by the ANZACs or victories of Australian sporting teams.

"In 2014-15, there were more than 15,000 Indigenous children in care across the country.

‘Sorry Day’ is actually held on the 26 May – and has been since 1998. The first Sorry day took place one year after the tabling of the Bringing Them Home Report in Parliament and having a day of commemoration was actually one of the recommendations within the report.

3

Individual Australians, however, can still acknowledge the pain and suffering caused.

YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT… THE RATES OF INDIGENOUS CHILD REMOVAL TODAY ARE HIGHER THAN AT ANY POINT IN AUSTRALIAN HISTORY

http://healingfoundation.org.au/

10

YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT… THE STOLEN GENERATIONS’ TESTIMONIES WEBSITE The ‘Stolen Generations’ Testimonies’ project is an initiative to record on film the personal testimonies of Australia’s Stolen Generations Survivors and share them online. There is no way any reports, research or books can ever hit home the realities of the Stolen Generations more than listening to those who actually lived through it.

NO CHANGE TO INTEREST RATES THE Reserve Bank of Australia has decided to maintain interest rates at their current level of 4.35 per cent, a move widely expected to be met with relief by borrowers grappling with escalating expenses and interest rates. Analysts had generally foreseen this decision, given a positive streak of economic data, which included lower-than-anticipated inflation figures, reduced spending, and a softening job market. However, RBA governor Michele Bullock, hinted at the potential necessity for further interest rate hikes, though her assessment of the economy was somewhat more upbeat compared to her previous remarks in December.

SUMMER CITY MARKET RETURNS

We decided that twothirds of the stocking that would normally go to Benalla will go into this section below TAG fish stock coordinator, Noel O’Connor. By Aaron Cordy MURRAY COD swarmed the waters of the Broken River for the first time in many years as the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) in conjunction with anglers from the Tatong Anglers Group (TAG), released an estimated 56,000 Murray Cod at five locations in the Broken River between Shepparton and Casey Weir last Tuesday. It'll take some time before the introduced fish will be hooked on fishing lines, and a little longer before they’re big enough to take home. Depending on water health it could be one to two years for catchable fish. For legal size, it will be three to five years. Despite the wait, it’s still good for local anglers with the release of the Golden Perch also scheduled to go into local waterways next month. “ T h i s s e c t io n of r ive r i s b e low

Gowangardie Weir (GW), GW is a blockage for fish migration passage. So, fisheries haven’t been stocking this because of the Goulburn and Murray Rivers. They felt that the fish could naturally migrate and get up here to spawn, but it just hasn’t been happening to any great extent,” said TAG fish stock coordinator, Noel O’Connor.

“Fish numbers above GW are really high… with great results from anglers. But this lower section is very, very poor, so the majority of Shepparton people have to travel above GW to try and land a Murray Cod. So, we decided that two-thirds of the stocking that would normally go to Benalla will go into this section below.”

MP’s plea for action on road safety SPEAKING during the first Parliament sit ting week, the State Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe has raised concerning trends and called for action on worsening road safet y in Victoria. Addressing the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne, Ms O'Keeffe highlighted a 15-year high for road fatalities, stating, "As of 12 December 2023, 299 lives were lost on Victoria's roads, a 24 per cent increase from the previous year and the highest death toll in 15 years. Significantly, 174 of these tragic incidents occurred on regional roads, underscoring the disproportionate risk faced by our regional and rural communities.” Ms O’Keeffe also raised concern over cuts to road safety programs, highlighting a $150M reduction in TAC-funded safer system roads and infrastructure program and an $81M cut from the TAC marketing and road safety budget over the past two financial years. "The result of these cuts is evident on our roads, with an increase in unsafe conditions, potholes, and substandard road repairs posing a risk to every Victorian driver," Ms O'Keeffe said. "Recently, a constituent, a victim of our crumbling road infrastructure, reached out to me regarding his vehicle damage costing $980, $600 below the $1,580 for damage claims. The cost of the damage is almost equivalent to an entire fortnight of this

Have you met Fiona Le Gassick? CEO… Fiona Le Gassick commenced her appointment as CEO at Greater Shepparton City Council on January 15, 2024. For the past two years Ms Le Gassick has been employed at Tasmania’s largest registered training organisation, as the Director Future Students and Industry. During this time, she has also been acting CEO on several occasions and was recently appointed acting Chief Operating Officer (COO) for a four-month period. Prior to joining TasTAFE, Ms Le Gassick worked at Greater Shepparton City Council for close to 10 years in a range of roles at a management and director level. Photo: Supplied

GET to know Greater Shepparton’s new CEO Q. Where are you from and how did you find your way to Shepparton? I was born in Melbourne. We left there when I was in primary school and headed to Coffs Harbour for 12 months. My parents took a detour to Mildura planning to return to Melbourne, however they decided to settle in Mildura with dad opening his own business, so I enjoyed growing up on the beautiful Murray River. Unfortunately, at the time of attending university the only real option was to leave and head south so I ended up at La Trobe University in Bendigo. Post university, we decided to look for work in Shepparton. Now, close to 30 years later, Shepparton is still home with a couple short stints elsewhere. We chose to make a life here in Shepparton, including raising our children. Despite not having any connections in the area, we have been extremely fortunate to have wonderful friends that became our family. Q. As the new CEO, what is your vision for Greater Shepparton? Being part of creating the future of Greater Shepparton has been an absolute passion and driver of my work for many years. When the opportunity came to move to Tasmania, I was torn as I felt that I had unfinished business in this space. This feeling was the primary motivation for my application for the CEO position. I certainly have my ideas, but as we know

the vision needs to be owned by us all and we all have a role to play if we are to see it come to fruition. I am passionate about open and transparent communication, about listening and engaging in robust and respectful discussions, so that we can all contribute to the growth and success of Greater Shepparton and all the communities which make this such a wonderful place to live. I am currently having many conversations with members of our community, Councillors and staff, as I need to understand the things people love about Greater Shepparton, what they want to retain, the challenges and issues they want to address and solve, and new aspects they would like to see become part of the fabric of our community. This is the time we come together to look for opportunities that will best position Greater Shepparton now and into the future. I will have more to share about this in the future as I continue to formulate ideas and concepts. However, we continue to have a strong sense of who we are and what we need to build on and leverage from our past and recent successes, and our ability to demonstrate incredible resilience in the face of adversity to determine and drive our future needs and aspirations. Greater Shepparton is leading the way as we continually strive to be a vibrant, culturally rich, creative, green and leading regional city and I look forward to working with our community in developing our roadmap. One that may be unconventional as we show Australia just how

strategically important Greater Shepparton is to the prosperity of our nation. Q. What are some personal or professional achievements you are most proud of? Being the parent of two lovely children is without a doubt my most important and proud achievement. As they are now adults, I can truly appreciate how they continue to challenge and ground me. From a professional perspective, I think my reputation for being bold and brave, for always looking for opportunities to think differently and to view things through an alternative lense, is something I am most proud of. This approach focuses me to be results-driven and sets a very high standard I expect for myself (and others) in terms of deliverables and paying respect to the privilege I have been given as the CEO of Greater Shepparton. Those who know me best and have worked alongside me over the years know the level of commitment and energy I bring to every interaction, with an aspiration of creating a place where people want to live, study, work, do business, play, volunteer and try something new. Q. What is your favourite thing about Greater Shepparton? Without question, it is the people! The sense of community here is rare, and time and time again we have come together during times of adversity and celebration. This isn’t necessarily the same experience in other communities.

Q. What is your favourite food? As a vegetarian, I do like a good Thai or Indian curry. Q. What football team do you barrack for, or what other sports or hobbies are you passionate about? I am a retired triathlete, but I do still get out on the bike and the occasional shuffle. We definitely missed the flat roads when we were in Tassie. Laughing, chatting and spending time with the kids and friends is what we love the most, and I enjoy the challenge of taking on the role of travel agent when we are travelling and exploring. Being a friend of the Executive Director of the Tasmanian AFL Team, we have recently purchased a membership. So, I need to say ‘go the Tassie Devils!’ That is my bet for the name of the team, but all will be revealed on 18 March.

WITH a current roster of 10 horses, RDA Shepparton seeks two additional quiet, well-behaved horses that have pony club experience, ideally standing at a solid 14.2-hand height. Horses can be donated or temporarily loaned. Long-term volunteers and horse leaders, Roslyn and Alby De Simone said all horses taken in by RDA receive meticulous care

and attention and are loved by the riders and volunteers. “From regular feeding to essential farrier and veterinary healthcare, every one of our horses is ensured a high standard of care,” said Roslyn. “The option to loan horses to the program temporarily is great for people who have a horse that isn’t being ridden as often anymore. The horses stay with us and are returned during school holidays, as an example, for

their kids or grandkids to enjoy when they are home from Uni or school,” added Alby. With all training provided by RDA Shepparton, volunteers need only bring their enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, a pair of boots and appropriate clothing. Supported by a network of community partners, including WB Hunter Group, Bunnings, Greater Shepparton City Council, G OTA F E , and more, R DA Shepparton exemplifies the

power of collective goodwill. From donated safety cones to custom-built facilities for people with disabilities, the organisation thrives on community support and collaboration. 16 years on from the national apology

By Aaron Cordy SORRY. The words spoken 16 years ago made small steps towards reconciliation for a nation often divided along colour lines. Though we are further than we need to be in our understanding of the past trauma inflected by past government policy, through clear communication, listening with empathy and understanding the road forward stretches out for all Australians new and old to walk down as one. Shepparton Region Reconciliation Group (SR RG) held several events yesterday to commemorate Sorry Day, beginning with a breakfast at the Queens Gardens. There was a traditional Smoking Ceremony by members of ASHE College. Speakers included Dierdre Robertson of SRRG, Cr Shane Sali, students from Greater Shepparton Secondary College Madeline Judd and Isabella O’Dwyer, Performer Bricky B, and 17-year-old Noongar Yamatji Wongi woman Dakoda Woods Carpio. “Shame doesn't live here. That’s the one I've been living off, that's what made me get up on someone else’s land. It's been a learning experience for me. I'm proud to be a part of the journey of closing the gap and to be on Yorta Yorta land as a Noongar female, it was definitely a blessing,” said Dakoda Woods Carpio.

RIKKIE-LEE

NATIONAL APOLOGY... A breakfast was held at the Queen’s Gardens in Shepparton yesterday to honour the 16th anniversary of the National Apology by then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. The crowd reflected on what the apology means to the First Nations People and how far we need to grow as a nation to bridge the gap and heel as one country. From left, Noongar Yamatji Wongi woman Dakoda Woods Carpio, Yorta Yorta men Bricky B and Cr Greg James. Photo: Aaron Cordy “To see the community come together as one, so we feel like one whole nation, we’re definitely slowly, very, very slowly making our way towards that, which I'm proud to be part of.” I move: That today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history. We reflect on their past mistreatment. We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations—this blemished chapter in our nation’s history. The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia’s history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future. We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have

inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians. We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country. For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry. To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry. And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry. The Hon Kevin Rudd 13 February 2008

Five years and still no action at primary school

NETWORKING VOLUNTEERS... GSCC is working with local organisations that rely on volunteers to provide their vital services, to develop an action plan to best assist community groups moving forward. GSCC Development Officer, Emma Hofmeyer, wants more local organisations with volunteers to reach out to the GSVMN if they need support or to learn more about the network. Photo: Aaron Cordy

It’s time for transparency on the Kialla West crossing, which is why I have requested the Minister to arrange a meeting between Regional Roads Victoria and myself to discuss progress on this project

Generosity in action in Greater Shepparton By Aaron Cordy VOLUNTEERS have always been vital to the daily running of many organisations across the Goulburn Valley. Greater Shepparton Volunteer Manager’s Network (GSVMN), in conjunction with Greater Shepparton City Council (GSSC), is developing a Volunteer Action Plan to help organisations continue to deliver their services in the best way possible. There are over 30 organisations in GSVMN that rely on volunteers across various fields from health care, education, providing food and help to those in need, and much more. The network provides a place where they can share ideas and knowledge, they share volunteers from time to time especially during Covid, when some places had to close and were sending people away, while others needed all the help they could get. “That’s the strength I think of this group is the generosity. They share information and knowledge and if someone in this group is unsure, if they’ve got an issue with recruitment or whatever, someone else will have faced that issue and will share that information. So, they’re really amazing,” said E m ma Hof meyer, Com mu nit y Development Officer at GSCC.

CROSS ABOUT INACTION... The Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has again raised the absence of safety upgrades at Kialla West Primary School since a three-vehicle accident involving a school family and a truck occured there in September 2018. Photo: Deanne Jeffers

NO safety improvements have been made on the school crossing at Kialla West Primary School, five years after the horrific three-vehicle accident outside the school. Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has been a continuous advocate for a major safety upgrade of the crossing, ever since the collision involving a school family occurred there in 2018. During Parliament Ms Lovell expressed concerns over the absence of action by the State Government, and its consistent lack of concern towards the safety of children, school staff and motorists using the Goulburn Valley Highway. “Children who access this crossing every

school day deserve to be protected from any dangers, and their parents deserve to have peace of mind that their children can walk to school safely,” she said. Ms Lovell has sought action on this issue for five years but says successive Ministers have continued to respond by saying that discussions continue between Regional Roads Victoria, the school and the council, while no action has been taken. “It’s time for transparency on the Kialla West crossing, which is why I have requested the Minister to arrange a meeting between Regional Roads Victoria and myself to discuss progress on this project.”

There are potholes everywhere. Driving down Echuca Road is like playing a game of dodgems. It is quite funny how our cars have to be roadworthy, but the roads don’t have to be safe for our cars to be on.

Should driver education be taught at school?

Alyssa Pigatto Lots of potholes on the way to Melbourne

Andrew Painter

The roads everywhere are appalling. And due to modern cars moving toward lower profile tyres because of better handling characteristics, it doesn’t take much of a bump to do serious damage including tyre and wheel failure that could lead to an accident.

HIGHLIGHTING the alarming increase in road fatalities last year, particularly the loss of 60 young people aged 16-25 years of age, she said, “Many of these horrific deaths may have been avoided had our young drivers been exposed to a more thorough and rigorous introduction to our road rules, safety and the importance of vehicle maintenance.” Ms Tyrrell said making a course available to all Victorian Year 10 -12 students through their schooling would enable qualified educators to correctly teach vital and potentially lifesaving knowledge as students prepare to get their learners or probationary licenses. She wants a basic driver safet y skills and vehicle maintenance program implemented into the

curriculum for students in Years 10-12. “Last years’ road toll statistics show that many young drivers lack education, understanding and respect on our roads and while some parents and carers have outstanding road safety skills and knowledge to pass on to their children, a school-based educational course dedicated to road safety, driving skills and basic vehicle maintenance would better prepare them for their first years on the road,” said Ms Tyrrell. “I do not wish to see our young people being lost on the roads because they were denied the time, patience and correct guidance from those who are deemed responsible enoug h to show them how to be safe drivers.”

Thought-provoking books that lead us from the sidelines By Aaron Cordy BOOKS that leave a lasting impression can be the quiet ones we don't see coming. Books that challenge ideas, shine a light on a topic we don't always want to examine can be thought-provoking and insightful in ways not obvious on the surface, and stay with us longer than imagined. Karen Viggers shared an insight into her latest book, Sidelines, at the Shepparton Library last week. The book delves into the world of suburban school-age sport and the ugly side of parents who want the best for their children but miss the mark and get lost in their own faded dreams and ambitions. A self-confessed soccer mum for 14 years Karen knows that of side sport. "Standing on the sidelines watching my own kids play and referee soccer I saw some interesting behaviour in that time,

and I think I got at times a bit over-invested myself," said Karen. "It's easy to get carried away. You think you are supporting your kids, and you can get a bit too enthusiastic and a bit embarrassing sometimes. But it can also put your kids off if you're getting a bit over the top like that." "The other thing that triggered me to write this book was that a brawl broke out at an under twelves kids' game in Canberra and my daughter could have been on one of those teams... but she had an injury and missed out on selection, thank goodness." While the issues addressed in the book centre around soccer, it is not only a soccer or sport phenomenon, as it gets harder for parents to navigate this everchanging and more complex world while as they try to raise their children with the best of intentions.

Lift Off allows local students to reach their potential By Aaron Cordy A DOZEN young locals saw their higher education aspirations become a little easier last Wednesday when they were awarded Lift Off Education Scholarships from the Greater Shepparton Foundation and the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project. The 2024 recipients hailing from different schools across the Goulburn Valley are Ned Doyle, Mya Jesperson, Cabe Roberts, Elleina Suarez, Charlee Roulston, Caitlin Welch, Tierney McGowan, Tessa McMahon, Ella Hibble, Kaytlin Coonerty, Ella Kightly and Sarah Colliver. In its tenth year, Lift Off has now supported 132 local students to achieve a post-secondary education since its inception in 2014. The scholarships were introduced when it became apparent an increased number of young people were struggling to afford the transition to higher education, and that country students were twice as likely to defer than metropolitan students. Ella Hibble will use the scholarship to help complete her Bachelor of Primar y E ducation at Victoria University. “I’m originally from Shepparton and decided to move to Melbourne six months ago to study a Bachelor of Primary Education at Victorian University... My mum being a single parent, it’s been a little bit challenging financially. So, we found out through friends about the scholarship, and that’s how it all came about,” said a proud Ella upon receiving the scholarship. “I’m grateful to be given my scholarship from the Women’s Charter Alliance and Margret Attwood Trust... I was very fortunate to be successful.”

By Dillon Shelley VICTORIA Park Lake recently became a stage for an unexpected spectacle: the arrival of two pairs of Magpie Geese, a species once declared extinct in Victoria. This sighting, although surprising, is not entirely unprecedented, as there have been sporadic sightings in Shepparton in recent years, following an absence since 1992. The Magpie Goose, known for its striking black and white plumage, strong legs, webbed feet, and a unique lump on the forehead, is a rare water bird that once thrived in Victoria's wetlands. However, by the early 1900s, the bird was declared extinct in Victoria, a consequence of overhunting and habitat loss. This species was once a common sight in the Victorian swamps, however, the bird's disappearance from southern wetlands led to its reclassification as a northern species. Today, the Magpie Goose is mostly

associated with Australia's top-end. In an attempt to reintroduce the species, the Victorian Government initiated a successful breeding and release program in the 1960s using birds captured from northern Australian populations. This led to the Magpie Goose's status being downgraded from endangered to near threatened, indicating a significant recovery. However, this success story is not without its controversies. Some biologists question if the Magpie Goose can establish a selfsustaining breeding population in Victoria, given the lack of solid data. Additionally, the issue of provenance arises, as the reintroduced birds are not of local origin. Regardless, the recent sightings in Shepparton bring hope and intrigue. Are these Magpie Geese a sign of a species reclaiming its lost habitat, or merely an introduced form filling an ecological gap left by the extinction of local populations?

The pathway to the AFL a lot broader at Verney Road

KICKING GOALS... Essendon Football Club visited Verney Road Primary School as part of their community camp in Shepparton. A quick Q&A with students before they hit the field to have a kick with the kids was great fun for all involved. Eliza Adams (centre) impressed Kyle Langford and Kaine Baldwin with her kicking, while VWFL player Adam Georgelin waits for the ball. Photo: Aaron Cordy

By Aaron Cordy AFL DREAMS begin in the backyard and school ovals, having a kick with friends or solo by throwing the ball in the air and hearing the destined crowd roar as children fly for speckies. For many the dream is all it is, but for other children, even the dream seems a reach too far. When Essendon visited Verney Road Primary School last week, the passion and excitement for the great game of AFL was clear on the young faces when Kyle Langford and Kaine Baldwin took to the stage, but it was when Caleb Logan and Adam Georgelin rolled out that understanding the dream of playing for an AFL football club was a lot broader and more open than people think. Caleb and Adam are stars of Essendon’s Victorian Wheelchair Football (VWFL) team. Played between two teams of five in a zoned court like Netball, with handballs counting as kicks, underarm throws are handballs and tackling is still on. Star forward Caleb Logan has been an Essendon tragic since the age of five. He couldn’t wait to sign up when he

received an email from Disability Sport & Rec wanting players to try out a new game of Wheelchair AFL. “I’ve been an Essendon Supporter since I was five, playing for them was something I never thought I could do, now I am and it’s pretty awesome. I’ve met some of my favourite players/coaches along the way, and even have my name next to one after scoring 100 goals,” said Caleb. Defender Adam Georgelin began his career at Richmond where he spent four years, before joining the Bombers three seasons ago. “Essendon gave me a second chance at reviving my dream of playing wheelchair AFL. They have also got me involved in some of the community programs I am forever grateful for this opportunity,” said Adam. VWFL currently has five teams with plans to expand to more teams for this inclusive sport that opens opportunities to play for AFL clubs for people who thought the dream was beyond them. At Essendon, the wheelchair players are a genuine part of their club and maybe one day a Verney Road student will live their AFL dream.

SKILLS PRACTICE... Verney Road students couldn’t wait to show off their footy skills for the Bombers. Photo: Aaron Cordy

WHEELCHAIR FOOTBALL... while the students at Verney Road Primary School got to meet some of the Bombers brightest AFL stars, they also learnt there are more opportunities to represent some of their favourite clubs when they met VWFL players Adam Georgelin and Caleb Logan (middle row, seven and eight from left) the pair represent Essendon in the Wheelchair version of AFL football. Funding boost for local sporting clubs A NEW round of grants designed to enable crucial upgrades to local sports’ clubs' facilities and infrastructure is now open for applications. T h e R e g ion a l C om mu n it y S p or t s Infrastructure Fund aims to deliver new and upgraded community sports infrastructure across four streams: - Indoor Stadiums and Aquatic Facilities - Community Facilities - Women and Girls Facilities - All Abilities Infrastructure.

Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland is encouraging local clubs to put together applications understanding many local clubs have reached out about funding for important projects. “Plenty of sporting clubs across our region have identified projects in recent times that would make compelling cases for funding under this grant stream,” Ms Cleeland said, highlighting urgent upgrades needed to Murchison-Toolamba Football Clubs’ facilities

and the need for more female changerooms for clubs like Longwood Football Netball Club, among others. With all applications for the fund needing to be applied for by local councils, Ms Cleeland encouraged all interested sporting clubs to reach out to their local council as soon as possible. “All our local sporting clubs should take their proposals to their local council and request that their projects be considered for

funding,” Ms Cleeland said, adding, “I will certainly be reaching out to our councils too, ensuring that our local clubs are not excluded from this fantastic opportunity.” Applications close at 5pm on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. More information on the fund and the application process can be found at: https:// sport.vic.gov.au/grants-and-funding/our-grants/ regional-community-sports-infrastructure-fund
