Convoy to save our water

Supermarket consortiums bleeding farmers By Aaron Cordy FRESH zucchinis have come into season with the fruit ready to be picked, packed and shipped to supermarkets. But out at Toolamba, Natural Earth Produce is one week into the season and Ross Marsolino has already walked away from 40 acres of crop and is just about ready to mulch the rest. Continued Page 36

By Aaron Cordy THE support was on display in Shepparton on Monday as the Greater Shepparton City Council-led convoy rolled through the streets of Shepparton to stop the Federal Government’s water buybacks, which will see 450 GL of water removed from local irrigators. Over a hundred trucks and tractors made the trek from Shepparton Sports City precinct along Wyndham Street, up High Street before cutting left towards SPC, in hopes the Federal Government will see reason and stop taking water from the food bowl of Australia. By Aaron Cordy WHEN the state government rolled out the fantastic new Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) that gave back 10c for every bottle and can recycled, consumers probably didn’t realise they would get bitten in the backside by the supermarkets yet again. Yet that is exactly what happened. Within a week of CDS going live, customers noticed the sudden hike in prices of soft drinks and alcohol slabs at the major chains. The question remains why has this happened? T he scheme is gover n ment-r u n so therefore should not have anything to do with the prices at any outlet, from the big chains to the corner store. There is the question of why these waste items are being collected. To be recycled, which means sold

and reused to turn into profit. So how does that affect the cost for the suppliers? It's the correlation between the 10c for a can or bottle you get back and the amount we are now paying at the supermarkets for these goods, which has customers vexed, with some prices rising more than $3 a slab. While Coles chose not to reply to our enquiries, a representative of Woolworths continued to parrot the line, “It’s a government scheme, and we are not making any more money with the price increase.” The price increase is further proof the hold of corporations like Coles and Woolworths have on this country, and what little regard they seem to have for what families are going through with the cost-ofliving crisis we are in.

THINK PAINT... THINK DARBY’S

Students CAN reach their greatest potential GREATER Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) welcomed Parliamentary Secretary for Education Darren Cheeseman and Chris Varney, Founder and Chief Enabling Officer of I CAN Network, on Monday to announce $5.75M in further funding for the school program. The funding boost means I CAN will expand its in-school student mentoring program from 100 schools to 254 by 2027, as well as provide online support and programs to all remaining Victorian government schools. I C A N suppor t prog ra ms i nclude holding presentations for families and broader school communities to help them

understand and include autistic students. Their mission is for all autistic students in every Victorian government school to have an I CAN Autistic Mentor available to them. Locally, GSSC as well as Kyabram P12 College have the program implemented in their curriculum for select students. “At I CAN, we believe in a rethink of autism that moves young people from a mindset of ‘I CAN’T’ to ‘I CAN.’ We do this through respectful, peer-based programs that celebrate autistic strengths, passions, and shared experiences,” said Chris. “Nowhere else in the world has there

been this opportunity to help ensure schools are safe for autistic students, who often struggle to fit in at school and feel safe in their autistic identity. The I CAN program has had enormous success in helping autistic students feel safe at school. “Following the program, autistic students report feeling a keen sense of hope, belonging and improved self-esteem.” Year 8 student Chloe explained several students meet on Fridays to chill out and do activities as part of the program. “It really helps us with our learning,” said Chloe. “I look forward to Fridays and I’m happy to be a part of the program.”

Granting honour

Bid to preserve Shepparton’s war memorials IN A bid to foster local heritage and honour the service of veterans, Kim O’Keeffe, the Nationals Member for Shepparton, is urging community groups across the district to take part in the restoration of local war memorials, honour rolls and avenues of honour. This comes as the Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour Grant Program opens its doors for applications, offering grants amounting to $30,000 for such projects. "This program supports many local war memorials across the Shepparton District, that commemorate and pay tribute to those in our community that have served our nation, in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping

operations," said Ms O’Keeffe. She further emphasised the importance of these grants in helping ex-service organisations, local government authorities, non-profit organisations, and education institutions in maintaining these significant sites. Ms O’Keeffe is confident that the funding will go a long way in preserving these symbols of bravery and sacrifice. Applications for the grant program are open until Monday, February 12, 2024 and can be submitted online at this link: https:// www.vic.gov.au /restoring-communitywar-memorials-and-avenues-honour. Ms O’Keeffe also offers support letters for applications upon request from her office.

Sam BIRRELL MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR NICHOLLS

Labor and Greens Destructive Deal

The Labor and Greens deal on water is the worst outcome for local farmers, manufacturers and our basin communities. These amendments which include destructive water buybacks and the scrapping of the socio-economic test will hurt production, increase costs and impact jobs across our region. It’s estimated these buybacks could cost over $500 million annually in lost production and see a reduction of 95,000 HA of irrigation area in the southern basin alone. But the fight isn’t over, and I will continue to stand up against this legislation that will impact 40 percent of Australia’s food and fibre production. Recently, Water Minister Tanya Plibersek told SPC she always bought Australian tinned tomatoes, so why is she making them harder and more expensive to grow? I care and the Nationals care and that’s why we will continue to fight.

Get On With It And Build Bridges

Recently, Shadow Minister for Regional Development, Darren Chester MP, joined me in Nicholls to discuss with the community about the need for funding for regional infrastructure projects. Mr Chester was instrumental in securing funding for the Echuca Moama Bridge while in government. This project has changed lives and saved lives. Regional funding from the Labor Government for similar critical infrastructure projects needs to put back on the table. Projects like the Yarrawonga – Mulwala Bridge, Kirwans Bridge and the Shepparton Bypass, are essential for their communities and deserve to be funded. It comes as the Labor scrapped the $208 million dollars which the former Coalition Government put on the table to get the first stages of the Shepparton Bypass off the ground. A disappointing decision and another example of Labor abandoning regional Australia.

WATER RALLY... a large crowd at the Water Buyback Rally know that water is the lifeblood of farming communities like ours and the follow-on effect of the buybacks has the potential to be generational if we continue to mismanage this resource. Photo: Emma Harrop.

Convoy to save our water

The greater Shepparton community rallied behind Mayor Shane Sali to stop the water buybacks continued from front page CROWDS of people gathered to hear an impassioned Mayor Shane Sali, introduce Co-Chair of Goulburn Murray Irrigation Dist ric t (GM I D) Water L eadersh ip Committee David McKenzie, Dairy farmer Natalie Akers, outgoing Greater Shepparton Business Network president John Anderson, Chairman of Fruit Growers Victoria Mitch McNab and a fired-up President of the National Farmers’ Federation David Jochinke. Water is the lifeblood of farming communities like ours and the follow-on effect of the buybacks has the potential to be generational if we continue to mismanage this resource that at times seems as though it’s in abundance, but it was not that long ago we were in drought. Any chance the Federal Government would see reason and heed the masses in the convoy was dashed with the announcement that the Albanese Government had made a deal with the Greens.

This deal makes it crystal clear the Government is completely out of touch and doesn’t give a stuff about communities David Jochinke “This deal makes it crystal clear the Government is completely out of touch and doesn’t give a stuff about communities,” said David Jochinke. See next weeks edition for more Water Buyback Rally coverage.

Dazzling dedication to fashion THE FAFA's United Nations - International Parade of Costumes took place recently at the Overlander Hotel. It was a day filled with vibrant costumes from around the world, creating an enchanting atmosphere. Participants had a fantastic time parading their carefully selected outfits on the red carpet. The event featured captivating dance performances, including native Philippine dances and lively Hawaiian numbers like 'Pearly Shells' and 'Tiny Bubbles.' Entertainment was abundant, with music, singing, dancing, and thrilling raffle draws. “We were truly honoured to have esteemed guest speakers, Honourable Wendy Lovell, and State Member Kim

O'Keefe, grace our celebration. Special recognition goes to Julie Mercer for her unwavering support and exceptional photography skills,” said FAFA member Marieta Martin. The evening's highlight was the International Fashion Parade, brilliantly judged by Kim and Julie. Selecting the winners was no small feat, as everyone looked stunning and walked the catwalk like professional models. Laughter, selfies, and photos filled the air, adding to the festive atmosphere from start to finish, even as we dismantled the decorations. The joyous spirit continued with everyone dancing, laughing, and having a great time. “Our President, Delma Broughton, always manages to

surprise us on every occasion. Her homemade sticky rice cake and glutinous rice cake were sweet treats enjoyed by all,” said Marieta. “Once again, I had the privilege of witnessing the unity, togetherness, and friendship that bind us all together in FAFA. On behalf of FAFA, I, Mayette Martin, would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved. This includes our dedicated committees, members, communities, guests, and generous raffle donors. A special thanks to the Overlander Staff for their exceptional customer service and unwavering support in making this event a success.”

By Aaron Cordy WITH the cost of living becoming a little higher and a little harder for everyone, it was an opportune time to celebrate 20 years of Saver Plus at Berry Street in Shepparton last Wednesday. Saver Plus is the world’s largest financial education and matched savings program. The education and money-matching saving program was developed by the Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ, delivered in partnership with Berry Street and the Smith Family. Berry Street Shepparton, along with Frankston, was the original pilot site for the program 20 years ago and is still going strong with the shift to a fully digital platform after COVID. This allows more people across the

wider community access to the program. Berry Street alone has supported 7295 people who have managed to save over $29.37M with ANZ matching $24.7M, however it is the educational aspect of Saver Plus that has had the biggest impact on participants. “Coming to those regular sessions, many lessons were learned that stick with me until today. One example was putting out a jar and filling it with big rocks first, as our big priorities, big spending in our lives. Then slowly putting everything else in so it fits much better,” said former participant Ali Al Bataat. To apply fill in the online enquiry form or contact Saver Plus on 1300 610 355 for more information.

Kim O’KEEFFE MP STATE MEMBER FOR SHEPPARTON DISTRICT

ANOTHER STEP… Greater Shepparton City Council has approved the next steps for the GV Link land sale and development. The council seeks government assistance for infrastructure, aiming to attract investors and stimulate economic activity in the region. Photo: Emma Harrop

GV Link land sale makes progress No Water Buybacks

I joined over 100 farmers and industries on a truck, ute and tractor convoy which drove through the heart of Shepparton in protest to the Federal Government’s water buybacks which will see 450GL removed from local irrigators. Taking more water away will have a devastating impact on our region. We are the food Bowl of Australia and one of Australia’s largest and most successful Agricultural and Dairy suppliers. We have incredibly successful companies also with global success such as SPC. Without water farmers cannot grow fruit and vegetables, grass cannot be watered to feed the cows which produce the milk. The Federal Government will be not only shutting down our farmers and industries but shutting down Australian producers of quality products. This will lead to loss of jobs and devastating consequences to our economy. We want water security and certainty, not delays. It is vital that the impact to our region is fully understood by the Federal Government as this decision in no shape or form makes sense. You do not shut down the hands that feed you. That is exactly what this will do. Thank you to all of those that participated in the convoy and the community that lined the Streets.

THE next phase for the GV Link land sale and development at 250 Toolamba Road, Mooroopna has been greenlit by Greater Shepparton City Council. This decision, made at the recent November council meeting, is a significant milestone in the council's long-term strategy to develop industrial land in the region. The GV Link project has been a strategic goal of the council, as outlined in both the 2021-2025 Council Plan and Shepparton and Mooroopna 2050 Regional Growth Plan. However, the lack of infrastructure has stalled potential investors' interest over the years. The council is now seeking federal government assistance to address this issue, focusing on road upgrades, gateway treatments, and underground infrastructure. The provision

of these amenities will kickstart the initial development of Stage 1, addressing the current shortage of industrial land. Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali expressed that the council is keen to get started, with Stage 1 offering four serviced lots over 40 hectares. “The sale of land and development of industrial operations at GV Link is a long held strategic aim of Council, and investor interest in the site is at an all-time high,” he said. “Council knows that there is a shortage of large plots of land for industry, logistics and manufacturing which have transport connections to major international and interstate freight gateways. GV Link is the answer to this and it is right here in our region.”

SHEPPARTON recently celebrated the official opening of the first stage of the Rotary Intergenerational Activities Park at Shepparton Villages. The event commenced with an engaging performance by students from Gowrie Street Primary School. This major community project, the brainchild of Shepparton Villages Board President, The Hon Jeanette Powell AM, and Rotarian, David Earle, has been four years in the making. It represents a significant milestone for the community, made possible through the unwavering support of the Rotary Club of Shepparton South and the wider Shepparton business community. Local students from GOTAFE and Notre Dame Emmaus Campus also contributed,

renovating park benches and tables donated by the Greater Shepparton Council. Shepparton Villages CEO, Veronica Jamison, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Sheppa r ton Villages was fou nded by communit y for communit y. T he Intergenerational Activities Park is a wonderful asset for the community. We cannot do what we do without this support.” The park, which emerged from resident feedback, now provides a space for residents and their younger family members to gather. The Rotary Club of Shepparton South played an instrumental role, donating $20,000 and helping secure further grants totalling over $50,000.

Christmas Chocolate Ripple

EASY DESSERT FOR CHRISTMAS DAY...Chocolate ripple, but make it festive. Photo: Taste

THERE are arguably not many recipes that are easier or more Australian that the fool-proof party staple, chocolate ripple cake. In the rare event that you’ve never made one, we have provided a recipe with some Christmas-spin suggestions to give it that little extra yuletide boost. Ingredients: ■ 500ml thickened cream ■ 1 teaspoon caster sugar ■ 1 teaspoon vanilla essence ■ 1 x 250g packet Choc Ripple biscuits ■ Crushed Candy canes/Crushed Peppermint Crisp/Mint leave lollies Method: Use an electric beater to beat the cream,

sugar and vanilla in a bowl until firm peaks form. Spread a little of the cream mixture along a serving platter to make the base. Stand 1 biscuit upright on its edge and spread with cream mixture. Place another biscuit alongside and sandwich together. Continue layering with cream mixture and remaining biscuits to form a circle (wreath). Spread the remaining cream mixture over biscuits to cover. Place in the fridge for minimum of 6 hours to set. Top with a crushed peppermint crisp, crushed candy canes, mint leaves or any other Christmas coloured treats, then slice the cake diagonally.

A SCIENTIFICALLY MERRY CHRISTMAS… Engage your children this Christmas with fun, educational experiments. Create a snowstorm in a jar, grow crystal ornaments, and make magic milk. Let’s make this holiday season a scientific spectacle. Photo: Christchurch City Libraries

3 fun holiday science experiments

HOLIDAY HUSTLE… Stay active in Shepparton this holiday season with outdoor activities and indoor exercises. Enjoy scenic jogs, family walks, online fitness classes, or even dance to your favourite holiday tunes. Balance festivities with fitness! Photo: Frank Minjarez

Staying active this holiday season CHRISTMAS can be a time of indulgence, but it doesn't mean your fitness routine should take a backseat. Staying active amidst the festivities is easier than you think! Take advantage of Shepparton's scenic beauty by going for a jog or a bike ride along the Goulburn River. The fresh air and picturesque views make for a refreshing workout. Alternatively, try a family walk around Victoria Park Lake after a festive meal. It's a great way to burn off those extra

9

calories while enjoying quality time with loved ones. Indoor exercises can be equally effective. Try online fitness classes or simple exercises like jumping jacks, push-ups, or yoga. Even dancing to your favourite holiday tunes can be a fun way to stay active! Remember, maintaining a fitness routine during the holidays isn't about restriction, but balance. Enjoy the festive treats, but also make time for physical activity.

for kids

THE holiday season in Shepparton just got a lot more exciting with a sprinkle of scientific fun. Parents, gear up to engage your children in some educational and entertaining experiments this Christmas! One fascinating experiment to try is creating a homemade snowstorm in a jar. Fill a jar with baby oil, add some white, water-based paint to water and pour it in next, and then sprinkle in some glitter. When you add an Alka-Seltzer tablet, kids will be thrilled to see a snowstorm come to life. Another experiment involves growing your own crystal ornaments. Dissolve borax in boiling water, hang a pipe cleaner shaped like a star or snowflake into the solution, and leave it

overnight. By morning, you'll have a sparkling crystal ornament. Lastly, for a quick and colourful experiment, try magic milk. Pour milk into a shallow dish and add drops of red and green food colouring. Dip a cotton swab in dish soap and touch it to the milk. Watch as the colours dance and swirl, creating a festive display! This experiment introduces children to the concept of surface tension in a fun and vibrant way. These experiments not only educate children about science but also provide a unique opportunity to spend quality time together during the holiday season. So, Shepparton, let's make this Christmas a scientific spectacle!

Wrap it up

THE talent of good gift wrapping- you're either born with it, or you're not. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or your presents looked like they were haphazardly wrapped in the car during red light stops, here are some tips for preventing upper back pain and making the gift-wrapping process more enjoyable: Organize your supplies: Keep all your wrapping essentials (scissors, tape, ribbons, etc.) in a designated, easily accessible space. This can help minimize frustration and save time searching for misplaced items. Choose an ergonomic workspace: Ensure that your wrapping area is well-lit and has a comfortable chair or stool. Adequate lighting can reduce eye strain, and a comfortable workspace will contribute to a more pleasant wrapping experience.

Incorporate personal touches: Add a personal touch to your gifts with creative and thoughtful touches, such as handmade gift tags, personalised notes, or decorative element s that ref lect the recipient's interests. This can make the process more enjoyable and fulfilling. Get creative with wrapping materials: Explore alternative wrapping materials, such as fabric, scarves, or themed reusable gift wraps. This not only adds a unique touch to your gifts but also reduces environmental impact by minimising waste. Listen to music or a podcast: Create a festive atmosphere by playing your favourite holiday music or listening to a podcast while wrapping. This can help turn the task into a more enjoyable and relaxing experience.

DON’T BECOME A STATISTIC... Be vigilant on the roads in December leading into the Christmas period. Photo: Supplied

IT’S almost time for many of us to travel to see loved ones for the holidays. The Victorian road toll at the time of print stands at 269 lives lost, up over 20 percent from 2022. It is an exciting time of year, but it’s imperative that drivers be mindful of the dangers this could pose. Plan ahead, stay alert and show patience with other road users. For older Australians or young drivers who have less experience, as well as capable

drivers, there will be tests on our roads this summer. Your family, your community, our emergency services and all people want you to reach your destination safely. If you are driving long distances, take rest breaks and do not speed. A road crash will change your life forever. Stop the car, rest up, let your people know you’re safe and continue driving with a clear mind.

IT’S almost December 1, and that’s when normal people start to decorate for Christmas, so it’s time to get your glue guns and glitter to put a personalised spin on your surroundings. If you can create some stylish and seasonal Christmas decorations yourself, not only will you save some money and have crafty fun in the process, you’ll have unique decorations you can enjoy for years to come. Here are three ideas to get you started: DIY baubles Clear, plain baubles, available from most craft stores, present the perfect opportunity to customise your decorations and create keepsakes for years to come. These baubles have a screw top meaning you can fill them with glitter, feathers or anything you can imagine. Further personalise these decorations by using fabric paint to write family members’ names and the

year across them. These also make wonderful “first Christmas” gifts for a baby’s first Christmas. Bush decorations One of the easiest and almost free ways to decorate is to collect items we find in our own backyard. Head to your local park and find some fallen pinecones, gumnuts or acacia and get to work with a can of metallic spray paint. Dipping the ends of gumnuts in glitter is also an easy and fun craft activity for kids to enjoy. Table centrepieces One of the most fool-proof ideas for a table centrepiece is to get a plain, glass vase and fill it with Christmas baubles in your colour theme of choice. For a rustic look, a length of burlap running across the middle of the table with a length of lace or paper doily placed on top complements a neutral-coloured theme perfectly.

By Aaron Cordy THE gift of the written word will never grow old, and at this time of year, there are plenty of amazing books to share with friends and family. A trip back in time with Australian author Tania Farrelly’s War of Hearts will lead you to the Western Front in World War I. A heart-stopping story of forbidden love, courage and the quest for redemption. An insight into the seedy underbelly of prison life can be explored in Black Lies, a gripping new thriller by Mercedes Mercier. Another fantastic Australian writer who will hook you from the first paragraph. Bestselling author Tricia Stringer tackles troubled relationships, ageism, love old and

new in this warm, funny, uplifting story of colleagues and unlikely travel companions thrown together on an astonishing and revealing train trip across Australia in Back on Track. For t he f a nt a s y bu f f s , t here is A Stroke of the Pen. A delightfully funny, f a nt a s t ic a l ly invent ive col lec t ion of twenty newly unearthed short stories by Sir Terry Pratchett, the award-winning and bestselling author of the phenomenally successful Discworld fantasy series. And pick of the lot, At the Foot of the Cherry Tree by Alli Parker. The incredible true story of Alli’s Grandfather’s fight against the White Australia policy, to bring his Japanese bride home after World War II.

Regional wine expert, Paul Phillips, names his

top six festive season wines for 2023 SELECTING the right drop to pair with your Christmas feast elevates the experience for yourself and your guests. Wine expert Paul Phillips, owner of Shepparton’s Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre on Corio Street, has shared his top picks for both red and white wines this Christmas. According to Paul, it’s easy to celebrate local winemakers throughout the rich, grape-growing region with some of the suggested drops coming from the Goulburn Valley and surrounding areas. The red wines Paul has named as his top picks all pair well with red meat dishes such as rich casseroles and steaks. When pairing wine with red meat recipes, the wine should stand up to the richness of the food. A good rule of thumb is to pair red meat with red wine. White wine pairs well with lighter dishes such as seafood, appetisers, salads, cheeses and poultry.

Paul’s top six picks: Three outstanding whites, ideal for your Christmas seafood and white poultry meats: -The Victorian 2022 Riesling $22 -Longleat Zingari Garganega 2023 $25 -Monichino 2021 Sauv Blanc $20 Three outstanding reds, ideal with your red meats, steaks, fillets: Hennings Shiraz 2021 $30 McPhersons Pinot Noir 2018 $22 Longleat Ragazzone 2021 $60

Pet-friendly holiday travel

Tips for bringing your pets on your Christmas trip TRAVELING with pets during the holiday season can be a joyous experience, but it requires careful planning. Ensure your pet is comfortable with travel by doing short practice trips beforehand. Pack essentials like food, water, toys, and a familiar blanket to make your pet feel at home. Research pet-friendly accommodations and check their policies beforehand. Always keep a leash handy and never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle. It's also a good idea to keep their medical records and your vet's contact info handy, just in case. Other considerations could include checking if your destination has pet-friendly activities and whether your pet will need any additional vaccinations or treatments for the trip. With these tips, you can make your Christmas vacation a memorable adventure for your pets, and the rest of the family.

Pet-proofing your Christmas

How to set up a safe and enjoyable environment for your pets Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, but it can also present potential hazards for our beloved pets. From the twinkling Christmas tree to the sparkling decorations, there's a lot to consider when pet-proofing your home. Start with the tree - choose a sturdy base to prevent tipping, and avoid tinsel, which can be a choking hazard for curious pets. Opt for pet-friendly ornaments made of wood, metal, or any material that can withstand a playful paw.

Keep wires, batteries, and glass ornaments out of reach to prevent any unfortunate accidents. Secure loose wires and cover outlets to prevent electrical mishaps. You can also consider setting up a small pet-safe tree at their level. Remember, while the festive season is all about fun and frolic, your pet's safety comes first. Make these small adjustments to your festive setup to ensure a merry and safe Christmas for all family members, including the furry ones!

P CK GIFT giving is an art that involves thoughtful consideration and US understanding of the recipient's preferences. Taking the time to put effort into the selection process can turn a simple gift into a cherished token of appreciation. Here are some tips to enhance the art of gift-giving: Personalisation: Adding a personal touch to a gift can make it more meaningful. Consider personalized items such as monogrammed accessories, custom-made artwork, or engraved jewellery. This shows that you put extra effort into choosing

something unique for them. Experiences: Instead of a physical gift, consider gifting experiences. This could be concert tickets, a spa day, cooking classes, or a weekend getaway. Experiences often create lasting memories and can be more meaningful than material possessions. Observation: Pay attention to any hints or comments the person may have dropped about things they need or want. It could be as subtle as mentioning a book they've been wanting to read or a hobby they've been meaning to pick up. Small details can guide you

to the perfect gift. Quality Over Quantity: Focus on the quality of the gift rather than the quantity. A well-thought-out and high-quality item, even if it's small, can be more appreciated than a larger, generic gift. Presentation: The way a gift is presented can enhance its appeal. Take the time to wrap the gift thoughtfully or include a heartfelt note. Presentation adds an extra layer of care to the overall giftgiving experience.

GMCU celebrates 2023 at AGM GMCU celebrated their achievements over the past year last Wednesday evening at the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) at their GMCU Annual General Meeting 2023. GMCU welcomed approximately 50 attendees including Members, the GMCU Board of Directors and staff. They wanted to celebrate the year with their Members and give back to the community by inviting keynote speaker leading Senior Constable Leigh Johnson to talk to about cyber

safety and their personal security. The AGM presented another opportunity for the GMCU Executive Leadership team to talk to Members and discuss how they can continue to play a critical role in the community by supporting them and local organisations’ financial needs. “The rate of online scams is increasing and scammers are becoming more sophisticated. It’s important we connect our Members with the right resources and information to protect

themselves from being scammed, and in the unfortunate case that they’re the victim of a scam know who to turn to. Continuing to highlight the topic of Cyber Safety and having Leigh join us for our upcoming AGM is just another way we’re putting our Members first,” said Chief Executive Officer, Ged Smith. Their unwavering commitment to Banking with Purpose remains a focus for their future plans and initiatives.

Hidden history revealed in a fascinating new book By Aaron Cordy INSIGHT into one of Australia's quiet histories was shared last Thursday at the Shepparton Library when Danielle Scrimshaw presented her book, She and Her Pretty Friend, as part of the OutintheOpen festival. With a focus on women such as Anne Drysdale, Lesbia Harford, and Cecilia John, She and Her Pretty Friend centres on stories of those who have remained obscured and less spoken of in the historical narrative. Throughout this retelling of Australian history, Danielle Scrimshaw explores how colonisation altered ideas of sexuality, how the suffrage movement in Australia created opportunities

for queer women and details her part in creating queer history. “I was already interested in Australian and social history and how people in the past can translate into the present. Because I had come out in my third year of Uni, and I thought I wanted to do an honors thesis, I wanted to do something with Australian history and I knew there was not a lot written about Queer women's history in Australia, so I wanted to do something with that,” said Danielle. And we're picking enough quantity on the back 40 acres, but right now the more we pack the more we lose. The more cost in labour, the more it costs us to box, the more it costs in freight, we’re just wasting our f***ing time.” Part of the gouge comes from the agents and wholesale merchants. For farmers, there is an element of sense using these services because it takes out the hassle of finding buyers for the stock, so the farmer can concentrate on quality. Ross knows that if it isn’t up to scratch Coles and Woolworths will send it back. But somewhere along the line the wholesalers stopped working for the farmers and began working for the supermarket consortiums, leaving farmers in the red and customers struggling to feed their families. If a grower like Ross does pull the pin on the season, overnight it will mean 50 jobs lost. He isn’t the only farmer feeling the pinch from the supermarket consortiums and while they know they can make a bigger profit by overcharging the customers and selling less, they’ll continue to do so without a care for who they ruin in the process.

MURR AY River Group of Councils (MRGC) Acting Chair Cr Tony Marwood is urging the Australian Government to slow down the Senate process on the Water Amendment (Restoring Our Rivers) Bill 2023 and consult with communities across the region. “We don’t understand why the bill is being rushed through the Senate, especially when it is clear that concern about the potential reintroduction of water buybacks is widespread, both geographically and among industries,” Cr Marwood said. “It’s interesting to note that even the Senate Committee’s own report admits that the committee accepts that buybacks will have an impact on communities. Furthermore, just last week, Murray Darling Basin Authority Chair Sir Angus Houston told us that his team had heard ‘lots of concern about water buybacks’ from communities as part of their current visitation program across the Basin. “If local councils were faced with this

level of community dissent on an issue, they would be obliged to consult widely and directly with the people who would be impacted by the decision. We want the Australian Government to afford our citizens the same opportunity to be heard and validated.” The MRGC wants all parliamentarians to hear the voices of its regional communities, such as those of these agricultural business owners and industry leaders. “We implore the government to slow down the Senate process. We also extend an invitation to all Australian senators to come and visit our region to talk to the people so they can fully understand their concerns, and learn from their insights and experiences.” Third-generation fruit farmer Adrian Conti of Conti’s Orchards added, “If water was to be removed from this area, it would make us unviable”. GOTAFE empowering others to take the next step H

AVE you or someone you know just finished school? What a lot of people don’t realise is that you can achieve your dream career without an ATAR, and many TAFE courses can act as a stepping stone towards a university degree. Starting your post-school studies at GOTAFE can make the transition a little less daunting, and you get to work, learn and live locally whilst you start the process of engaging with higher education. GOTAFE is both proud and fortunate to have partnerships with Charles Sturt University and La Trobe University to provide established pathways from a GOTAFE qualification to a University Degree. Billie-Ann Dillon completed her Certificate IV in Community Services (CHC42015) at GOTAFE in 2019 and is currently studying a Bachelor of Human Services and Master of Social Work at La Trobe University in Shepparton. “Maybe you are someone who doesn’t know what career you want yet,” she said. “Anything is possible, it is never too late to find a career.” Whether you’re kicking off in your first ever job, upskilling on your next step towards a better job, switching up industries and trying something completely new or returning to study, TAFE can support you on your pathway towards your goal – a job you love. Every pathway is unique, and it’s important to understand that credit arrangements can differ depending on your own experience, and when, where and what you may have studied before.

HE change of preference period is a stressful time for Year 12 students – there are a lot of highs and lows when locking in course preferences for next year. Year 12 students have a lot to consider. Whether they received a higher or lower ATAR than expected, or if they just want to make sure they’re making the right choice, the change of preference period is a short window to make any changes to their preferred university courses. Tools such as ‘ATAR Calculator’ or ‘Find Your Course by

ATAR’ can help narrow down options by filtering courses based on a real or estimated ATAR. If they’ve received an ATAR and it’s lower than expected, then there are other ways into a dream course. Using an online ‘Pathways Tool’ can help explore all alternative entry options – so they can still reach their study and career goals. During the change of preference period, it’s important to remember that an ATAR won’t define their whole life – especially if the ATAR wasn’t what they’d hoped for. If

they’re anxious or unsure about courses or the process, then chatting to an expert to understand the many options will go a long way to putting them at ease. Future students, parents and carers can connect with a study advisor through live chat, calling 1300 135 045, booking a consultation or attending a campus event near you. FUN IN THE SUN... Head to Kyabram District Health Service on Monday December 4 from 10:30 for a fun morning organised by the Disability Liaison Officers, pictured, to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability. Photo: Supplied

Come and celebrate in Kyabram IN March last year, Kyabram District Health Service began to offer a ‘Disability Liaison Officer’ program. They sent out expressions of interest to people with disabilities to join a group to organise their inaugural ‘International Day of People with Disability Celebration’. Eight people came to the first meeting and enthusiastically organised their first ‘International Day Celebration’ for 2022. The event was held on Friday December 2, 2022 and was an enormous success, with over 200 people attending. With the funds raised on the day, the group decided to donate half the money to flood relief for Rochester and the other half was used to fund this year’s celebration. On Monday December 4, 2023 from 10:30am, join the group and community

members for lots to see, do, and eat. There will be a games arena, African drumming under the tree and four 15-minute chair yoga sessions. Free live music will also be available and with a gold coin donation you can take home some homemade Christmas and birthday cards or a potted plant. Funds raised will go towards 2024’s celebration. There will be a sausage sizzle, gelato and coffee van, and make sure you go to the information stall to get a sunflower cookie. At this year's event, they will also be launching the ‘Hidden Disability Sunflower’. There will be a low sensory area with a sunflower out the front for attendees in need of some quiet time. Kyabram District Health Service is located at 86-96 Fenaughty St, Kyabram.

THE independence to get out in the garden, go for a walk or do the simplest task of washing the dishes is so often taken for granted. Such things are usually considered chores. But for many people with disability, it is the ability to do these simple tasks that can offer more joy, self-worth and ease on mental health. Community Interlink (GV Health) provide NDIS Support Coordination for people like Frank Montague-Elliott, to help them navigate the complex NDIS world. A dedicated NDIS Support Coordinator works to help them understand their NDIS funding, the services available to them and how to access them. For Frank, who has epilepsy, the respite carers who come into his house help give him the independence he lost. A proud man who loved being out in the gardens, Frank suffered

The simple act of hanging out with Frank, watching a movie and sharing the mental load that takes a toll on people who have lost the ability to live the life they once did, makes all the difference. “It's a blessing for Frank, Community Interlink NDIS Support Coordination, It made his life so much easier and my life so much easier as a carer. Without them, I would have so much more pressure on me,” said Frank’s wife Belinda Montague-Elliott.

Bushranger turns flaming Crow OFF TO ADELAIDE... Shepparton United hard running rebound defender Oscar Ryan has been drafted Adelaide Crows. Photo: Supplied

By Aaron Cordy WITH pick 27 the Adelaide Crows select Oscar Ryan from the Murray Bushrangers. The words read out by new AFL CEO Andrew Dillon surprised many on draft night, but after a quiet word from Crows coach Matthew Nicks, Oscar knew his AFL dream had come true earlier than expected. The Shepparton United hard running rebound defender

was expected to get pickup up late in the draft or possibly the rookie draft. That he was there on the night was chance as he was only invited along to support fallow Bushy teammate Connor O’Sullivan, who was taken by Geelong Cats with pick 12. Oscar landed in Adelaide on Friday and began preseason training on Monday. The transition from talented youngster to draft bolter began last season when Oscar shut down his

social media to cut the unneeded distractions in his life. It was a grounding that helped him achieve his dream. As the well-wishers poured in, it was big Taylor ‘Tex’ Walker’s congratulations text message that excited Oscar the most. “It’s bloody awesome, I didn't expect it one bit, especially that night, and I'm very grateful for the opportunity,” said Oscar on being drafted by Adelaide.

PEDAL POWER... This year marked the 13th TAT200 and was a resounding success. Since its inception the charity ride has raised over $1M for local charities. Photo: Tatura 200

By Aaron Cordy THE TAT200 was held on the weekend, and it was a resounding success. The great weather and good vibes saw a crowd of participants and volunteers come together for the charity bike ride and walk in Tatura. Families tackled a 10km walking trail through the streets of the town. While riders of all abilities could choose between 25km, 50km, 100km, the keen riders challenged themselves to the 200km trek from Tatura through to Mooroopna, Mu rch i son , a nd Ru shwor t h b efore

making their way back to Tatura. This year marked the 13th TAT200 after a few years hiatus due to COVID. The initiative was set up by Tatura Milk Industries to extend community support beyond its traditional stakeholders. All sponsorship money raised through the event is donated to local charities and groups within the Goulburn Valley. Since the event’s inception in 2008, the Tatura 200 has raised over $1,000,000 for local charities, organisations, and community groups in the Goulburn Valley.
