Kinder on school sites on their way THE dreaded double drop-off will be a thing of the past for families at four schools in 2024, including Kyabram P-12 College.

The Victorian Government’s ‘Kindergartens on School Sites building program’ is about making kinder easier to access, making drop-off and pick-up easier for parents and providing a smoother transition from kindergarten to school for children.

Government is ensuring every new primary school has a kindergarten on-site or next door, with 12 new kindergartens opening in 2024 right across the state.

Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn last week named the service providers for four ‘Kindergartens on School Sites’ which are set to open across Victoria next year, with these four kinders delivering an additional 363 kindergarten places for local families.

The new service providers will be located at: • Roxburgh Park Primary School - Northern Schools Early Years Cluster • Willmott Park Primary School - Uniting (Victoria and Tasmania) Limited • Kyabram P-12 College - Shine Bright • Quarters Primary School – Early Childhood Management Services

MOUSTACHE owners of Shepparton are being rallied to make a difference this Movember by donating blood or plasma.

The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and Movember have partnered in a bid to highlight men's health, considering that one in three men will need blood at some point.

The Shepparton Lifeblood Donor Centre is adding a touch of creativity to the noble cause. Every donor this month will be gifted a limited-edition bandage featuring a distinctive design by Movember co-founder and artist, Travis Garone. The bandage, named 'Brothers in Arms', depicts a handlebar moustache, an emblem of two hands coming together, set against a cool blue backdrop.

Garone explained, “There is a simplicity

to growing a moustache, and there is a simplicity to donating blood. It’s a very simple act, and simple acts will change the world."

Lifeblood spokesperson Shae Burns emphasised the need for more local men to contribute. "This Movember we’re calling on more locals to help us meet increasing demand. Currently we particularly need more O group donors because it is the universal blood type that can be given to anyone in emergencies," The Movember bandage is a part of Lifeblood’s 2023 True Colours campaign, an initiative that teams up with Australian artists to design bandages that not only look good but also inspire donations.

An initiative to enhance the assistance and resources of caregivers within our community. With funding from Carers Victoria, as part of the Connecting Carers in their Community Grant Program!

“Our goal is to make the most of this funding by organizing activities and workshops that resonate with our current caregiver connections and at the same time, draw in new caregivers within our

com mu n it y. However, ou r pr i m a r y emphasis will be on employing a co-design approach to create activities based on the input and needs expressed by caregivers in our community, ensuring that the voice of every caregiver is acknowledged and considered,” said Claire Perrella, of KCLC. “Carers are often overlooked despite the vital support they offer to family and friends. In line with the Victorian Carer St rateg y, t h is prog ra m will provide caregivers with opportunities to form peersupport networks and collaborate with caregivers to create a program tailored to their unique needs.”

To kick off Carers Voice Carers Choice, KCLC plans to host a lunch on the paddle steamer in Echuca. This event is designed to bring caregivers together for a leisurely lunch and a cruise along the majestic Murray River and they are encouraging caregivers to come along.

Shepparton and Oshu strengthen ties I N A c elebrat ion of i nter n at ion a l camaraderie, Greater Shepparton recently played host to a Japanese delegation from its sister city, Oshu. The visit, which took place recently, was a vibrant display of cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

The delegation, which arrived with much anticipation, embarked on an extensive tour of Shepparton's thriving industry, captivating tourism spots, and prestigious education sectors. The visit was a testament to the enduring relationship between Greater Shepparton City Council and Oshu

City, a bond formed in March 1979.

T his alliance, spanning over four decades, has fostered engagement in various areas, including culture, sport, industry, agriculture, and education. The primary aim of this recent visit was to revive the education exchange program between these two cities, further strengthening their ties.

Shepparton's warm reception of the Oshu City delegation underscores the city's commitment to building global relationships, and its dedication to cultural, industrial, and educational growth.

"The reason I wanted to specifically talk about racism in professional settings is not to highlight racism, it's how do we understand the difference between racism and ignorance.

Often in my role, I've realised it's only a discussion that needs to happen to understand why one feels the way they do. I realised that not everyone means what we think they mean, so how do we bridge the gap?" said Ms Samar.

In her professional life, Neha has often found it hard to be judged for her work experience and vast skill set, which can be unfortunately common for people of diverse backgrounds seeking a place in corporate management and board of directors.

Silent tribute S H E P PA RT O N p au s e d i n s o l e m n reflection on November 11, as the echoes of a bygone era resonated through the silence. Marking the moment in 1918 when the guns of the Western Front fell silent, the community gathered at the cenotaph on the corner of Fryers and Welsford Streets.

This poignant ceremony, held annually, commemorates the end of the First World War and pays tribute to those who suffered

or lost their lives in all wars and armed conflicts.

As the clock struck 11, the crowd of 200, a mix of veterans and community members, bowed their heads in respect, observing a minute's silence.

The silence was not just a tribute to the past, but a call for peace and remembrance in our times. In Shepparton, as in the rest of Australia, we remember.

W ITH an early onset of hay season, Victorian farmers and the Country Fire Authority (CFA) are raising alarms about the risks associated with high moisture content in hay. This comes in the wake of a recent incident in Kerang where seven hay sheds, each housing 800 bales of hay, caught fire due to hot northerly winds and a subsequent ember attack.

Kerang Captain Ramon Steel recounted t h e h a r r ow i n g s c e n e , n o t i n g t h e unexpected wind change that led to an uncontrollable firestorm. "We were hit with an ember attack and the fire spread to a further six sheds," said Steel, who has served as a firefighter for 39 years.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan warned of the dangers of baling hay with high moisture content, especially in green hay, which can heat up and lead to spontaneous combustion. Heffernan urged farmers to be vigilant about their hay production and storage conditions this season.

Heffernan also advised regular monitoring of haystacks for signs of heating, such as steam or unusual odours.

"By being vigilant, you’re protecting yourself from the financial impact of losing valuable fodder and protecting your property and family from the potential danger of hay fires," he said.

AT ITS meeting last week, the Reserve Bank of Australia Board decided to raise the cash rate target by 25 basis points to 4.35 percent.

The reason stated is that Inflation in Australia has passed its peak but is still deemed too high, and is proving more persistent than expected a few months ago.

The latest reading on CPI inf lation indicates that while goods price inflation has eased further, the prices of many services are continuing to rise briskly.

W hile the central forecast is for CPI

inflation to continue to decline, progress looks to be slower than earlier expected.

CPI inflation is now expected to be around 3½ percent by the end of 2024 and at the top of the target range of 2 to 3 percent by the end of 2025. The Board judged an increase in interest rates was warranted today to be more assured that inflation would return to target in a reasonable timeframe.

The Board had held interest rates steady since June following an increase of 4 percentage points since May last year.

Mt Major, Dookie A popular destination for both walkers and mountain bike enthusiasts, Mount Major in Dookie is must-do experience. Mulana nin iyoga (Yorta Yorta for ‘Spirit of the Stone’) is a 4.6km (return) walking trail on the northern side of Mount Major, while the southern side has a great network of mountain bike trails. Victoria Park Lake, Shepparton Within the centre of the city of Shepparton lies Victoria Park Lake, a tranquil, picturesque area popular with visitors and locals for walking, cycling, picnics, fishing, bird watching and outdoor games. The older kids will be thrilled by the Skate Park and Flying Fox while the younger kids will be entertained by the popular playground. Across the lake, Western Park offers an All-Abilities Playground nestled among bushlands.

Goulburn River, Greater Shepparton One of four Heritage Rivers in Victoria, The Goulburn River is popular for fishing, canoeing and camping in the nearby Lower Goulburn National Park and the Shepparton Regional Park. The Yanha Gurtji Shared Pathway is over 40km in length and the network connects our CBD, Victoria Park Lake precinct, Aquamoves and KidsTown to the Goulburn River.

Mooroopna Aboriginal History Walk, Mooroopna This walking tour will give you the chance to discover some of the tracks in the area known as ‘The Flats’ located between the Peter RossEdwards Causeway and the Goulburn River on the south side. It is a 3.54 km walk with care to be taken during warmer months due to snakes.

FTER a year of flood-induced hiatus, Shepparton's local waterways are once again teeming with life and activity. Steve Threlfall, owner of Trelly's Outdoor Shepparton, a hub for fishing and hunting enthusiasts, is thrilled to see the community back outdoors.

"It's a sight for sore eyes, seeing the locals back fishing after such a long break," he says.

The promise of better fishing comes hand-in-hand with the much-anticipated cod opening on December 1. Trelly shares, "The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority has promised low and dry banks for the cod opening. Things are looking really good heading into the fishing opening."

BE VIGILANT ABOUT SNAKE SAFETY A

S temperatures rise, our cold-blooded reptile friends are becoming more active and a lot more visible.

Snakes are typically found in cool, dark, protected areas such as under buildings and near sheds, around rubble and stored materials, in electrical switch boxes and long grass. It's also not uncommon for snakes to enter unattended open vehicles.

About 3,000 people are bitten by snakes every year, with about 300 of them receiving antivenom and one or two bites, on average, proving fatal.

If untreated immediately, a person can die within 30 minutes depending on the amount of venom injected and the species of snake.

Bite victims must be kept calm and still and have their whole injured limb pressure bandaged.

Please remember: • If you see a snake, keep calm and move yourself and anyone with you (including pets) away from the area • Don't attempt to capture or harm snakes. Instead call DELWP on 136 186 for further advice, or call a licensed snake catcher • Undertake first aid training and ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately.

Never too desperate to discover books and writing

By Aaron Cordy BOOK lovers and budding writers were treated to a special event last Thursday night at the Shepparton Library when Dr Rachel Matthews presented her latest book, Never Look Desperate.

A Melbourne-based author, Rachel grew up in Shepparton and regularly comes back to visit family. A lecturer and teacher, Rachel’s debut novel, Vinyl Inside, received strong press reviews and was highly commended by the Australian Vogel Award judges.

Never Look Desperate is Dr Matthew’s third book. The story tackles the absurdity of despair in a recovering world, the liberation from isolation and the wild frontier of middle-aged Tinder - which has fast become a phenomenon for dating after 50.

The audience was treated to Rachel’s insights into the writing experience and knowledge, not only publishing three books and several short stories in magazines and newspapers but also her many years as a lecturer and creative writing teacher.

ORIGINALLY from Shepparton, sociologist Dr Anthony Moran recently shed light on the pressing issues facing Shepparton's migrant community in a discussion organised

by La Trobe University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Dr Moran highlighted the persistent skill shortages in the area, emphasising the importance of employment in the farming sector for the migrant community. He stated, "The sorts of pressing issues have always been around skill shortages, getting people into not only skilled jobs, but also into semi-skilled or relatively unskilled jobs."

However, he acknowledged the challenges posed by

seasonal work, including issues around work conditions and housing for migrant workers. He suggested that structural changes, such as minimum payment for hours rather than piece rates, could be part of the solution.

Speaking about the COVID-19 response, Dr Moran underscored the crucial role local community activity played, particularly within the multicultural community.

He noted, "It really relied upon a lot of local community activity, including from youth, young leaders in ethnic communities, the ethnic community council, in combination with the local council and GV Health."

He also highlighted the challenges of communicating

vital information to non-English speaking communities, underscoring the need for effective multilingual messaging.

Dr Moran emphasised the strength of Shepparton's multiculturalism. He lauded the community's welcoming approach, recognising how it has shaped the town into a diverse and vibrant hub, attractive to individuals from all walks of life.

Connecting our urban community with nature

Waterway update Native fish surveys were conducted across the Goulburn Broken catchment in reaches of the Yea River, Hughes Creek, King Parrot Creek, mid-Goulburn River, Seven Creeks and Hollands Creek.

The endangered Macquarie Perch is a target species for these surveys with the Goulburn-Broken catchment being home to seven of 11 known populations in Victoria.

The surveys have shown that Macquarie Perch populations are continuing at healthy levels and seem to be recovering well from previous dry and low-flow years.

Other threatened and vulnerable species captured during the surveys included Murray Cod, Trout Cod, Golden Perch, Southern Pygmy Perch and platypus.

High numbers of Golden Perch and Trout Cod were caught in the mid-Goulburn River and Seven Creeks respectively.

L AST Sunday Friends of Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton (FABGS) launched their Urban Community with Nature project. With new signage, extra nature play space, a bike rack and a conversation/reflection/outdoor classroom area to compliment what already exists at the Children's Garden.

This was financed by a grant from the Bendigo Bank’s Greater Shepparton Connected Community funding.

Several members of the local Soroptimist International of Shepparton joined FABGS to celebrate their donation of a seat overlooking this area in recognition of 50 years.

Maureen, wife of the late Royce Dickson together with Grandsons Ben and Tom

were on hand to celebrate one of the story poles which tells the tale of how the majestical, ancient, gnarly Grey Box tree which oversees the area received its name.

Children's activities included bark painting, bird feeder and One Tree per Child planting and a celebratory cuppa and plant sale followed the cutting of the ribbon.

“Today is a l l about celebrat i ng or launching the results of our grant Connecting our Urban Community with Nature. This spot is now an oasis amid a rather vast urban area. A place we can all enjoy away from busy times and lives,” said Jill Grant, President of FABGS.

Shirley Marven welcomed Probus South Pacific Limited (PSPL) members from four clubs, Kyabram, Rochester, Tatura and Mooroopna, to celebrate, enjoy each other’s company and remember the terrible floods which affected two of the towns twelve months ago.

Michael Ransom, Chair of the PSPL Board described the role of PSPL and spoke about the need for clubs to be always looking to the future to ensure Probus was going to be attractive for the next generation of retirees. The day was enjoyed by all with a hope to meet again next year.

Local history preserved thanks to funding round THE Nationals Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe is encouraging organisations to apply for a share of $350,000 for projects to help preserve the region’s heritage. The Local History Grants Program is currently accepting grant applications for up to $15,000.

Ms O’Keeffe said the funding round is a fantastic opportunity for local groups to secure important investment into their projects.

“Local history is precious to our community and our local groups do an excellent job collecting, preserving and sharing our stories,” said Ms O’Keeffe.

Katandra & District History Group Inc. was awarded $6,205 from a previous grant round to produce ‘From Adversity to Prosperity – The History of Katandra and District 1930-1960.

“Local schools, groups and sporting clubs

have also been successful in getting investment to promote and record their histories and celebrate important milestones and anniversaries.” “$15,000 can go a long way and I’m strongly encouraging local groups to make an application so that our stories can live on for generations,” said Ms O’Keeffe.

Big birthday bash a great success SHEPPARTON Marketplace celebrated their 25th birthday on Saturday, with the celebrations proving to be a huge hit with shoppers and retailers alike.

There was fun for the whole family to be had, with face painting and balloon sculptures delighting children as well as a delicious cake that was shared with shoppers, of which not a piece was left after the celebrations wrapped up.

Australian national research agenda to end violence against women and children THE national research organisation dedicated to women’s safety, ANROWS, released the Australian National Research Agenda (ANRA) to End Violence Against Women and Children 2023-2028.

Co-designed with a diverse group of survivors, practitioners and researchers, the ANRA forms part of ANROWS’s mandate to expand the research and evidence base on what works to prevent violence, intervene in its trajectory, respond in crisis and support healing and recovery as set out in the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-2032.

Dr Jane Lloyd, Acting CEO of ANROWS, said that having victim-survivors co-design the A N R A was absolutely necessary.

“We reviewed the existing evidence and identified the gaps in the research. We then took that to people who are living and breathing these issues every day. People who have lived through violence, academics who are leaders in this field and practitioners who are working in these systems

and see where the lack of evidence, or the lack of other options, are causing the most harm.”

Shepparton’s summer sizzle BOM drops the heat bomb

HOT AND DRY... Shepparton is set for a hot and dry summer with below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s long-range forecast influenced by significant climate drivers. Photo: Roni

BRACE yourself for a hot and dry summer!

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has predicted below-average rainfall and aboveaverage temperatures for much of Australia, including our region, from December to February. This means we're 2.5 times more likely to experience unusually high temperatures, comparable to the warmest 20% of periods from 1981 to 2018.

This long-range forecast is influenced by

several significant climate drivers, including an active El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). El Niño, persisting in the tropical Pacific, typically results in drier conditions and warmer days across eastern Australia. The positive IOD, likely to continue into early December, usually means less rainfall for central and southeast Australia.

Australia's climate has warmed by

approximately 1.48 °C since 1910, leading to more frequent extreme heat events. The BOM's climate model, which simulates the physics of atmospheric, oceanic, ice, and land surface processes, uses millions of observations from satellites and in-situ instrumentation. This allows it to account for the influence of climate change and natural climate drivers in its forecasts.

As we prepare for the hot and dry

conditions ahead, let's make the most of summer. It's the perfect time to enjoy our beautiful natural scenery.

By Aaron Cordy GREATER Valley’s Calisthenics celebrated a fantastic year of competitions with their end-of-season concert to a crowd of friends, family and supporters at the Westside Performing Arts Centre in Mooroopna last Sunday.

It was a time to reflect on the great year which saw many winners for the club by the Subs-Junior team and the Tinies, as well as several soloist performers bringing home trophies throughout the year.

For the Kickstart Crew, it was their first chance to perform on stage. While the rest

of the team from Tinies up to Masters it was a chance to have fun in front of the home crowd for the last time. Four members of the club, Millie Gemmill, Megan Okley, Elena Radevski and Vanessa McKenzie achieved 10 years of service.

The Jenny Clarke Memorial Trophy was won by Elena Radevski. For her dedication and willingness to do her best, while supporting her teammates in the club.

By Dillon Shelley THE Kyabram Redbacks put on an impressive batting display at the Kyabram Recreation Reserve in Round 6 of the Apprenticeship Factory A Grade Haisman Shield. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Redbacks amassed a mammoth total of 407 for the loss of 4 wickets in their stipulated 80 overs.

Opener Billy Mclay got the innings off to a steady start with a patient 20 off 64 deliveries before being stumped off the bowling of Cohen Paul. His opening partner, Paul Parsons, played a more aggressive knock, scoring 64 off 78 balls, including 9 fours and a maximum, before being caught by Joshua Robertson off Nicholas Hill.

The real fireworks however, came from Cade Mueller and skipper Kyle Mueller. Cade scored an impressive 111 off 167 balls, his innings punctuated with 12 boundaries.

His captain, Kyle, was even more dominant, smashing a blistering 158 off just 141 deliveries, including 18

Charlie Mclay and Kyle Fitzgerald remained unbeaten at the close of the innings, contributing 18* and 25* respectively, ensuring the Redbacks ended on a high note.

On the bowling front, Euroa's Cohen Paul was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3 wickets for 151 runs in his 28 overs. Nicholas Hill was the only other successful bowler, claiming the wicket of Paul Parsons.

Despite the huge total, the Euroa bowlers maintained a decent economy rate, with Fletcher Paul and Walter Jackson conceding less than 3 runs per over in their spells. However, the lack of wicket-taking options proved costly as the Redbacks piled on the runs.

The match will continue on Saturday, 18 Nov 2023, with Euroa's response to the daunting total set by the Redbacks.
