On the road back to recovery By Stephanie Holliday THE devastation brought by the 2022 Flood Event sent shockwaves through the entire region. Hundreds of people lost their homes and although 12 months on we are on the road to recovery, many disadvantaged members of our community are still facing the challenges of a chronic housing shortage. Aspen Lodge Caravan Park in Mooroopna is a haven for those who are facing homelessness, both prior to the floods and most certainly afterwards. The park was decimated as flood waters rose last October, but with the help of Emergency Recovery Victoria (ERV), Victorian Department of Justice, Greater Shepparton City Council and a multitude of kind tradesmen from across Victoria, park owners Yvonne and Russell Prince can finally see the light. “We are getting there now. We have 55 dwellings currently, as opposed to our original 75, with a few more on their way. We have had some people return who lived here

before the floods, as well as people who are still waiting for their homes to be liveable again, refugees and families who have nowhere else to go living here,” said Yvonne. “We firmly believe everyone has the right to have a place to call home if they wish, and that’s our objective here,” added Russell. In the early stages post flood, ERV organised for the Australian Defence force to help clean up the park, with GSCC subsequently picking up eight loads of flood damaged property. As Yvonne and Russell rebuild, refurbish and finish working on the park, they are immensely grateful to all the plumbers, builders, electricians and everyone else who has helped get as many sites as possible back up to habitable conditions. The response from ERV to Aspen Lodge’s plight has gone on to form the basis of a case study to be used in subsequent natural disaster responses for similar establishments. If you’d like to help Yvonne and Russell Price, they are

Cash for cans SHEPPARTON is gearing up for an exciting eco-friendly initiative, thanks to local waste management company, FOOT T, and the support of The Nationals Member for Shepparton District, Kim O’Keeffe. The Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) is set to roll out on November 1, offering a 10c reimbursement for eligible cans, containers, and bottles returned. Ms O’Keeffe expressed her delight at the commencement of the scheme, praising the efforts of FOOTT in driving this initiative. “It was exciting to see the facility operating and the process in action, which collects and

sorts containers efficiently,” she said. The scheme will not only incentivise recycling but also benefit charities, schools and community organisations by offering a simple fundraising method. FOOTT will operate CDS Vic Depots in Shepparton, Benalla and Yarrawonga from November 1 and in Cobram from November 27. The depots will guide residents through the process, with automated counting machines ensuring a smooth operation. Charities and community groups can now register as a donation partner, ready to accept donations from supporters once the scheme starts.

One hell of a book launch By Aaron Cordy A TROOP of friends, family, history buffs and book lovers gathered at the Shepparton RSL on Sunday, October 15, to witness the birth of One Hell at a Time, the brilliant new book by Tracee Spiby. One Hell at a Time is Tracee's first book and tells the incredible story of her grandfather Albert Henry Spiby's harrowing experience during World War 1. Despite works on Knight Street causing lighting and microphone issues, the event was a triumph for the Murchison local. Hosted by Tracee's daughter Laura SpibyJones, with guest speakers Lieutenant Colonel Neil C. Smith AM Rtd and renowned author Hazel Edwards OAM, who is famed for There's A Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake. After her guests of honour spoke, Tracee stole the show with an incredible reading from the book, capturing the hell our servicemen face in war and why their stories must be told. "Never before have I read such a truthful, detailed and graphic account of life in and out of the trenches for Australian infantrymen to read it is to feel the freezing cold of a Flanders winter or suffer the pain of wrenching free from jagged barbed wire and the sucking, bloodsoaked mud which enveloped all living, dying and dead creatures," said Lieutenant Colonel Neil C Smith. Tracee will hold an author talk at the Numurkah Library Friday, November 10 at 2pm. You can purchase a copy of One Hell at a Time from Collins bookstore in Shepparton, or for a signed copy email tracee@traceespiby.com.au.

SH EPPA RTON'S beloved Cafe On Nixon is stirring up fresh excitement under its new owner, Kirsty Morland. Known for its delectable array of dishes, the cafe is now adding daily pasta, stirfry, and roasts to its menu. "We're not just adding dishes, we're adding an experience," says Kirsty. "We want our customers to taste the authenticity of real cooking, made from scratch with real ingredients." The lunch service at Cafe On Nixon continues to thrive, but Kirsty has her sights set on expanding the breakfast

and brunch offerings. She envisions a bustling morning scene with patrons enjoying steaming cups of coffee and delectable morning tea. "And let's not forget about our freshly baked cakes and slices," Kirsty adds. "There's nothing like a sweet treat to start or end your day." War heroes honoured

Shepparton unveils new memorial

FOR A GREAT CAUSE... Flavorite, will be funding vital research and support for patients and families suffering from Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes. Local fresh food grower supports great cause THE largest glasshouse grower of fresh fruit and vegetables in the country, Flavorite, will be funding vital research and support for patients and families suffering from Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes. This November, Australians can add colour to their lives with healthy fresh produce while giving hope to patients with Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes for Maddie’s Month. Flavorite will be donating 15 cents from every pack of specially marked tomatoes and capsicums sold exclusively at Coles supermarkets to Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision during Maddie’s Month up to a maximum of $100,000, funding vital research and support for patients and families suffering from Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes. Mark Millis, co-founder of Flavorite and the man behind establishing the

collaboration between Flavorite and Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision lost his battle with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer in 2019. Tom Millis, Flavorite’s marketing manager and one of Mark’s five sons encourages all Australians to get behind this great cause, support Australian farmers and to eat more fruit and vegetables. “By purchasing our tomatoes and capsicums, you can make a real difference to someone else’s life and improve your health at the same time! Consumers can also ‘scan and win’ to go into the draw to win great prizes like a private chef dining experience or premium Weber Baby Q gas barbecue.” The Flavorite team continue to drive Mark’s vision and legacy in their 8th year of this special campaign.

TEN students at Shepparton ACE Secondary College recently embarked on a once-in-alifetime trip to Cambodia and Vietnam. They learned new skills, made memories and had immersive experiences in new cultures. From September 6 until September 23, students travelled from Ho Chi Minh, to Saigon, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and then back home. They visited Ho Chi Minh complex, Museum of Ethnology, Hoa Loa Prison, Cu Chi Tunnels, War Remnants Museum, Angkor Temples and several cities on their journey. Year 9 student Jaime told us the highlight of her trip, “It was definitely a cool experience to hold a giant tarantula,” she said.

“It was my first trip overseas and it was great to learn about another culture and learn new things.” Year 9 student Miles added, “It was enriching to try new foods and have new experiences, and it was also eye-opening to see the socioeconomic differences to what we are used to back home.” Shepparton ACE Secondary College is committed to providing life-enriching experiences and often take students on enriching holidays abroad. Shepparton ACE Secondary College is a small secondary school offering a mainstream education, pathways to further study, strong anti-bullying policies, and a safe, caring, and inspiring learning environment.

Seeking new ideas at the AGM HISTORY can fade with time, memories are lost, and items of interest may be damaged or misplaced over the years. It's the purpose of our Historical Societies to preserve our past and keep it safe for future generations. A challenge facing many historical societies as the wonderful caretakers grow older and move on is to generate a new group of interested volunteers to take over when they go. The Mooroopna Historical Society was one group facing this dilemma. Regional wine business in 20233 takes out top award

2023 BUSINESS HALL OF FAME WINNER – PHILLPS CELLARS AND REGIONAL WINE CENTRE.... from left Jan and Paul Phillips with 2022 Hall of Fame winner Rod Poliness from Central Tyre Service. Photo by: Emma Harrop

Phillips Cellars Named 2023 Hall of Fame Business continued from front page AFTER being discharged from the war, while travelling to Melbourne Tom Phillips saw an opportunity and opened a pool hall in Shepparton. He then bought the Pine Lodge Hotel in 1934. The Phillips family owned and operated the Hotel Australia in central Shepparton, for 35 years. In 1944, Tom Phillips took ownership at a time when beer was hard to get and when it was available, it was rationed to two bottle per man. At times the Phillips family owned the Cricketers Arms Hotel in Mooroopna, the Junction Hotel Toolamba, Commercial Hotel Mooroopna, and the Courthouse Hotel

Shepparton. In 1979 they purchased the property known as the Goulburn Valley Winery, situated at Vaughan Street Shepparton. It was here that wine was made until 1990. The business is now headed up by Paul Phillips who takes great delight in taste-testing the product so he can share his broad knowledge of wines and winemaking with the community. He has previously conducted wine appreciation courses and is a member of local wine and food clubs. “No one else knows the local wines like I do. I have met the owners, I have been to the vineyards, and I have tasted them all,” Paul Phillips jokingly said. In 2004 the business included a Regional Wine Centre to display and promote over 50 local wineries from Echuca to

Rutherglen and from Rutherglen down to Seymour. In addition to being purveyors of this region's finest wines, Paul and his staff also have a comprehensive knowledge of home brewing and stock a large range of home brew supplies. They are able to assist you with queries and advice on how to perfect your favourite tipple at home. A humble and honoured Paul Phillips accepted the induction into the Hall of Fame, last Friday, to the cheers of a delighted crowd on behalf of Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre. “If you make money in Shepparton, spend it in Shepparton,” Paul said.

By Aaron Cordy TAT URA hosted the Tennis Victoria's Regional Teams Event Series 2 over the weekend. Under-14 and junior open players from 11 country regions across the state competed in the two-day event, with two girls and two boys representing each team. After playing in competitions for the association the best players are picked for the regional

event. This is a qualifying event for the state team championships, which will be held in Horsham next February. The State Championships will have competitors from all the country regions as well as the metro association to compete for the title of state team champions. The event was a chance to showcase not only the talented tennis play the region has to offer, but also the fantastic Tatura Lawn

Tennis Club’s facilities and the town of Tatura itself. “T he venue’s just i ncred ible. T he club have done an amazing job, all the volunteers. It's been really lovely, the club have been brilliant to deal with. They've prepped everything beautiful, and we’ve been able to walk in and run the event,” said Bree Sharp, of Tennis Victoria.
