Burning to register

CFA encourage Victorians to register their burn-offs online

WITH the fire season and summer heat burning down upon us, the CFA is encouraging Victorians to register their burn-offs online.

Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) Chief Operating Officer Nicole Ashworth says while the burn-off registration phone line (1800 668 511) is still available, callers can experience long wait times on days of high demand.

“Using the Fire Permits Victoria website to register your burn-off also ensures ESTA’s fire call takers can focus their efforts on taking emergency triple zero calls,” she said.

“Earlier this year, we experienced days with more than 1200 non-emergency calls to register burn- offs on private land, so we’re encouraging people to start pivoting to the easy-to-use Fire Permits Victoria website.”

For more information about burning off safely, visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au/burnoff.

Before you notify the CFA, make sure you:

• Follow regulations or laws by CFA and local council.

• Notify your neighbours if the burn will generate fire and smoke.

• Check the weather conditions are safe to burn.

• Postpone your activity if high-fire risk conditions develop.

• Establish a gap in vegetation or fire break of no less than three metres cleared of all flammable material.

• There are enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely and effectively.

• Never leave a burn-off unattended.

Forever here in our hearts

CELEBRATING LOVED ONES FOREVER... Forever Here can place weatherproof QR codes directly on headstones, which allows smartphones to play memorials of loved ones.

WHEN loved ones pass and the grief settles, there is little left to hold on to but our memories. Trips to the cemetery to say silent prayers or talk through our thoughts to the special someone who is no longer here to share our days with can offer peace, though lack the connection we seek. Forever Here can offer the chance to keep those memories close through the scan of a QR Code.

Broni Paine, Stacey O’Toole and Heidi van Maaenberg of Forever Here hope to combine technology with personalised memorials of loved ones who have passed to allow their precious memories to be shared over again. Weatherproof QR codes are placed directly

on the headstone or urn, to be viewed on a smartphone by visitors wandering through the cemetery or watched when you visit your loved one's grave site.

“So many amazing lives are lived and their stories are kept in draws. Why not share their stories and let history live on visually,” said Heidi van Maaenberg.

Generations to come will be able to play a visual presentation of the individual's accomplishments, preserving history as it is, forever.

Big news on the fruit growing front

Geoffrey Thompson Holdings sold to Redland Premium Fruit

ROB Bryant, Chairman of the board of Geoffrey Thompson Holdings, believes this move will boost employment, stating it "will create a lot of jobs."

He also envisions this merger as a means to transform the fruit industry, drive regional growth, and consumer health in Australia. The introduction of citrus to the company's offerings not only adds continuity to the factory but also bolsters the

recently upgraded $60 million facility.

In Bryant's words, “Our apples, pears, some stone-fruits will be complemented by the new citrus component of the business.” He further adds, “The takeover adds real value to the Redland Premium Fruit, it’s a great outcome for Geoffrey Thompson Holdings and the Shepparton region.”

AN estimated crowd of 8,500 gathered at the Shepparton Showgrounds on Friday to enjoy the sounds of hip-hop artists AB Original, Baker Boy and the Hilltop Hoods, as well as rock legends Jimmy Barnes and Paul Kelly, at the Now & Forever festival, held on Friday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid

One half of the A.B. Original duo, rapper Briggs, a Yorta Yorta man and Shepparton local, headlined the festival, which aimed to encourage people to vote in favour of the Voice referendum.

Seeing is believing with seniors’ tours

Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s contribution to the Victorian Seniors Festival is giving some of our older citizens a guided tour of one of their city’s newest assets.

Throughout October, seniors who haven’t seen a classroom in some time can view one of the most contemporary colleges in the country.

This was certainly the case for Stan, who had last stepped foot on the site in 1965. “It’s changed a little bit,” he laughed. “It’s amazing.”

Positive community engagement in the wake of last year’s floods

THE bonds of community were strong as the waters rose last year, we saw the best of the Goulburn Valley community as people helped neighbours sandbag property and bring food to those trapped in their homes. What happens now, 12 months after the floods, is occupying the thoughts of many locals.

The newly founded Mooroopna Community Recovery Committee (MCRC) focuses on continued community engagement as the

Goulburn Valley is put on a flood warning. In conjunction with Resilience in Recovery, MCRC is offering a voice to Mooroopna residents who felt isolated across the causeway.

Meeting monthly at the Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre MCRC encourages every community member, flood impacted or not, to come along and contribute to the discussion about how we move forward as a community.

Catalyst for change

DEDICATED to creating a more inclusive society, WDEA Works is taking a bold step forward. With over 30 years of experience in transforming lives and fostering connections, WDEA Works is set to embark on an extraordinary journey with a strategic rebranding initiative under the new name, areable. This move aims to deepen their positive impact and extend their reach across more

Since its inception in 1989, are-able has been a pillar of support for individuals with disabilities, helping them secure a place in the workforce. From humble beginnings in Warrnambool, the organisation's footprint has expanded across Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland,

driven by the increasing demand for its services. The new brand, are-able, represents more than just a new look. It's a catalyst for change, breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes to create an environment where everyone's abilities are recognised and nurtured. The organisation's commitment to doing "more for more people in more communities" remains steadfast, as it continues to bring diverse communities together

to help individuals reach their full potential.

Tom Scarborough, CEO of are-able, said, “This rebranding marks a pivotal chapter in our organisation’s journey. It reflects how we are doing more to deliver greater impact, create opportunities for inclusiveness and drive positive change in communities across Australia. Together we are building communities that say yes, together we are able.”

Destruction of trees leaves the community poorer

THESE trees, a vibrant addition to the stretch between Knight Street and Balaclava Road, had their lives abruptly ended, snapped at the base and subsequently had to be removed by the diligent Arboriculture team of Greater Shepparton City Council.

The financial toll of this

As part of Victoria’s Big Build, we’ve upgraded the Shepparton Line with modern VLocity trains now running. We’re also working to enable more frequent and reliable train services, creating better connections across our state.

destruction is staggering, with each tree's damage and replacement cost amounting to over $450, pushing the total cost beyond $10,000. The 23 crepe myrtle trees, planted in 2022 as part of the Urban Forest Strategy, were just beginning to bloom, symbolising a fresh start for the community.

Expressing disappointment over such destructive acts,

Eric Heeps, Council’s Acting Manager Parks, Sport and Recreation, stated, “It is extremely disappointing to see this vandalism occur, with damage caused to the trees in the area on two separate occasions.”

He lamented the need to implement protective measures, adding, “Council will work to replace the trees and install cages around them to ensure this

cannot happen in the future. It is a step we didn’t want to have to take however Council want to protect the greenery in the area and prevent the opportunity for further damage.”

The Council urges citizens to maintain vigilance and report any witnessed acts of vandalism to the police, in a bid to preserve the area's greenery and prevent further damage.

SUPPORTING YES VOTE

I am writing to express my support for the ‘Yes’ to an Aboriginal Voice to Parliament.

Australia has an indigenous population of about 3.2% yet they make up 29% of our prison population. They have lower life expectancy and the gap between the health and wellbeing of aboriginal and non-aboriginal Australians is not closing. Clearly what we are doing is not working. It’s time to recognise that we need to change the formula and respect the word of the people who’s lives our government’s policies most effect. Voting ‘Yes’ to the ‘Voice’ does not divide us, it recognises and respects our proud Aboriginal heritage and gives them a chance to have a say in their own future and welfare.

VOICE TO PARLIAMENT IS NOT ONE SUCH CHANGE

Australia was the first country in the world to allow women to vote and run for parliament. This was groundbreaking at the time, but even then Australians had a keen sense of equality for all. This sentiment was continued in 1967 where Australians voted to give Indigenous Australians the right to vote. Australia’s modern expression of equality for all was further expressed in antidiscrimination laws, as well as the more recent yes vote to allow same-sex couples the same legal rights to marry under Australian law. All of these social changes were embraced by the majority of Australians because there was an overwhelming sense of an equal or fair go.

The proposed voice to parliament is not one such change. Importantly it seeks to permanently enshrine in our constitution that a group of Australians will have a

separate and special voice to parliament over and above other Australians. As a Liberal this is something that I am fundamentally and philosophically unable to support. A Yes vote implants race-based discrimination in our own constitution whilst simultaneously undermining our existing parliament.

Sadly, we have missed a unifying moment for our country.

If the case was for recognition of our Indigenous Australians there would be bipartisan support and overwhelming support by most Australians.

Labor and the Greens scream ‘racism’ for anyone asking legitimate questions of how this voice will function. The fact is that when the Howard-era Northern Territory alcohol bans were expiring BOTH the ALP and Coalition senators for the Northern Territory pleaded with the government not to allow these bans to lapse. The government ignored both of them and chaos reigned. Governments could start by listening to one of the 11 indigenous parliamentarians in the parliament rather than the relentless pursuit of ever-bigger government to distract from the real issues.

COUNCIL POLITICS

At the last local government election I took the opportunity to vote for candidates for the Greater Shepparton City Council who I was confident would mainly concentrate on core issues, rates, roads and rubbish and those issues which are important to all ratepayers eg. parks, libraries etc.

To my disappointment, I now find that our Council has voted to not celebrate Australia Day on January 26th 2024, and to lobby the Federal Government to change the date of

our National day.

In addition, our Council has advised that it supports the Yes campaign in the upcoming referendum.

Councillors are entitled as individuals to vote as they chose, but at no time should politics enter into these matters.

I don’t recall, as a resident and a ratepayer, being asked if I approved Council’s stance.

I mistakenly believed that elected councillors were there to represent all constituents not a select number.

How wrong I was!

WE IMPLORE YOU TO VOTE NO

No to the voice of intolerance and what it represents. We reject the notion of special racial-based rights and privileges. The question remains: who will write up the rules for this risky, divisive, unknown, and potentially permanent system?

Our nation’s unity is at stake, as racial separation takes precedence over the unity of all Australians. We are one together, not two divided entities. Vague promises only exacerbate the uncertainty surrounding this issue.

Let us stand together to preserve the principles of equality and fairness that have defined our nation. Australia deserves better than a future marred by discrimination and division.

Sincerely, Anonymous

FOR THE GREATER GOOD...

The voice driving change

A STUDENT led initiative is leading the way to greater engagement and participation for the whole school community at Shepparton ACE Secondary College.

The student-elected council, aptly named ‘Student Voice’, has been a driving force behind innovative and dynamic initiatives that help fellow students connect and have their say on how the Shepparton ACE Secondary College can be improved from their perspective.

Recently, the college participated in a sports day- with a twist. As well as physical activities, there were fun challenges that elicited plenty of laughs from participants and spectators alike.

The sports day was the brainchild of

the Student Voice and was a resounding success. This has been the first year the college has appointed a student-elected council, and their legacy will continue as it will become an annual incumbent of the student body.

At Shepparton ACE Secondary College, learning coexists with student welfare. Students develop best when teaching and learning occur in a context of student wellbeing, which is enhanced when all members of the school community participate in the learning programs and the life of the school. The Student Voice aims to further enhance the student-centric model of the school and further empower their learning experience.

CONTINUING its wonderful support for great causes with the proceeds of their upcoming charity raffle going to Ladies Who Lunch, the Shepparton Club’s ongoing donations have added much-needed funds to the GV Health Foundation.

Ladies Who Lunch, the reimagined Pink Ribbon Brunch, returns this year to raise much-needed funds for women’s oncology services in the Goulburn Valley. All money raised will be donated

locally to the GV Health Foundation to support local women going through cancer treatment in the Greater Shepparton region and the Integrated Cancer Centre.

Megan began working in the Geelong Store as a sales assistant in 2004, before moving to Shepparton in 2014 to take over the manager’s role at the newly opened Shepparton store. Since then, she has put in a huge amount of work, constantly growing and improving the store’s range and customer base. Megan has recently progressed to taking on the role of area manager and oversees operations from central Victoria right across to the Mildura region. A new chapter

Robert Iervasi joins SPC Global’s Board of Directors

ANNOUNCING a key addition to their leadership, SPC Global has appointed Robert Iervasi to its Board of Directors.

The former Group CEO and Board Director of Asahi Beverages, Iervasi is a highly esteemed figure in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry, bringing an impressive record of success and a wealth of experience to his new role.

His leadership at Asahi Beverages, a diversified consumer products company that boasts an annual revenue exceeding $5 billion and over 5,000 employees, has been marked by significant achievements. Notably, Iervasi played an instrumental role in the 2020 integration of Carlton & United Breweries, a strategic move that substantially broadened Asahi Beverages' influence.

He has also demonstrated exceptional

leadership skills during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, effectively mitigating company-wide risks and complexities.

Hussein Rifai, Chair of SPC Global, expressed his excitement about Iervasi's appointment, "I am delighted to welcome Robert to our Board. His remarkable track record of leadership and his extensive experience will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing success of our organisation".

Iervasi, on his part, expressed his enthusiasm about joining SPC Global, “I have been impressed with the portfolio offering, growth ambitions and capability within SPC Global. I am thrilled to be part of an organisation that is not only growth-oriented but also dedicated to meeting the dynamic needs of customers and consumers”.

Sunning those scales

REPTILES of all shapes and sizes are basking in delight at the warm-weather enrichment on offer at Kyabram Fauna Park.

Snakes, lizards and turtles are offered the opportunity to leave their homes in the Reptile Habitat to slither, waddle and bask outdoors in the grass on sunny days.

Kyabram Fauna Park keeper Ambrose Burcher said nonvenomous reptiles benefit from the exercise and sunshine during the outdoor enrichment.

"On nice sunny days, they can explore, get some natural UV, and feel a variety of new textures on the ground,” Mr Burcher said. "The reptiles display exploratory behaviours like smelling plants, slithering around their environment, and some of the lizards even close their eyes and stretch their necks towards the sun as they bask."

Broad-shell turtles, Black-headed pythons, Shingleback lizards, Eastern blue tongue lizards and Coastal carpet pythons are some of the species that visitors can see enjoying the outdoor enrichment. As cold-blooded creatures, reptiles sunbathe to raise their body temperature, generate more energy and digest their food.

BOARDROOM BOOST…

Robert Iervasi, a seasoned executive in the FMCG industry, joins the Board of Directors at SPC Global. His impressive leadership record and industry experience are expected to significantly contribute to the company’s strategic direction and ongoing success.

A new strategy for Indigenous leadership and knowledge

STEPPING forward to champion Indigenous leadership and knowledge, La Trobe University has unveiled its new Indigenous Strategy. Launched during the institution's Indigenous Week (October 2-6), this eight-year plan is designed to support and uplift First Nations students, staff, and communities through a range of innovative initiatives. Among the measures to be implemented include the appointment of an Associate Dean (Indigenous) across all academic schools and the establishment of a Council of Elders to offer strategic and cultural advice on matters such as Indigenous access, participation, and success in education, research, and employment. There will also be an Indigenous

Research Framework to guide collaborative research with the Indigenous community.

"The Indigenous Strategy breathes life into the University’s enduring commitment to walk with First Nations Australians, continuing the process of reconciliation, truth telling and treaty making,” said Associate Professor Michael Donovan, Pro ViceChancellor (Indigenous). The strategy was developed through extensive consultations with Indigenous Elders, community members, staff, and students.

The University also plans to establish an Indigenous Research Centre, provide mandatory cultural training for staff and students, increase employment opportunities

2023 SPC Business Excellence Awards nominees

The Urban Waterway Works

For the past two years the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GB CMA) has supported community groups and land managers, such as local governments, to undertake improvements to waterway health in urban environments.

The Urban Waterway Works project, funded through the Victorian Government, has already involved two funding rounds (via Expressions of Interest).

After plenty of interest during the 2022/23 round, it has been decided that the final funding round would target a few of the excellent submissions that were not funded in Round two. The projects to be progressed in 2023/24 include woody weed control and revegetation works at the Goulburn River in Murchison, Hughes Creek in Avenel and Ford Creek in Mansfield.

The project has already achieved significant environmental and social outcomes and the GB CMA intends to seek further funding to

support regional communities to undertake more urban waterway improvements.

The GB CMA’s Christine Glassford said it had been a pleasure to work with communities and land managers who were so passionate about improving the condition of their local waterways.

“The results demonstrate what is possible so I hope many more communities will be encouraged to unite and propose projects to transform waterways in their own patch.”

Committee inquiry into 2026 Commonwealth Games cancellation

SILENCE OF THE STANDS... Parliament to establish a new Select Committee Inquiry into the cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games which was set to be held in Victoria.

THE Victorian Liberals recently secured unanimous crossbench support in the Parliament to establish a new Select Committee Inquiry into the cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“With the Committee now established, I write to invite and encourage community members who would like to make a submission to the inquiry to do so,” said Wendy Lovell MP.

The inquiry will investigate a range of matters related to Victoria’s cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games including:

• failures in governance, probity and procurement processes in the Victorian Government’s bid, contract, and termination of the 2026 Commonwealth Games

• t he impacts of the contract termination of the Commonwealth Games on Victoria’s reputation, business community, tourism, and major events

• t he timeline, progress and budget of the Victorian Government’s regional infrastructure and housing build

• t he impact on community, social, amateur, and professional sport in Victoria.

The Select Committee is interested in receiving submissions

Future stars running rings around the region

FUTURE athletic stars hit the track on Monday at the John McEwan Reserve in Shepparton as 38 schools from Cobram down through to Kialla competed in Division Athletics school sports. Cheered on by lucky parents, grandparents and carers who were fortunate enough to attend the event.

The top competitors from the Greater Shepparton area school sports days, which were held over the course of the year, met for the regional competition last week, with the winners earning a place in the Division competition.

The games are a test of skills and competitiveness for students ranging from grade four to six. Competing against their peers will help build foundations which will lead some of the students to continue on to higher levels of competition, and maybe even the Olympics and Commonwealth games for the dedicated few.

While there will be disappointment for some of the students from Monday’s meet, the top places getters will again have the chance to display their talents and compete against the best school-age athletes from Northern Victoria this Friday in Albury.

from a wide range of organisations, clubs, groups, businesses, and individuals who have been involved with preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Regional Victoria. Submissions must be made to Submissions (parliament.vic. gov.au) by 23 October 2023.
