Hometown hero delights the children of St Anne’s

AFL superstar and local legend Josh Rachele from the Adelaide Crows visited St Anne’s College to meet and greet students as they donned their colours for Footy Day to end term three.

The students were treated to a highlights reel of Josh playing with the Adelaide Crows, before a Q&A session. He talked about growing up in Shepparton, playing soccer and how he fell into football. That led to his blistering first game, kicking five goals on debut against the Fremantle

Football Club in the opening round of the 2022 season.

Signing autographs and graciously taking fan photos with the students, Josh electrified his younger audience, sharing his passion and dedication for sport with the children, and his gruelling health and fitness regime.

Letters to the Editor

VOTING NO

Dear Editor,

The forthcoming referendum is a blatant power grab by an unelected, and unaccountable group seeking amendments to our Constitution which guarantees equality before the law. They want to replace that section with a group with superior rights to override a democratically elected government.

We welcome Letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain

rights to the self-appointed, 22-person aboriginal group. This is a takeover by stealth. It is very divisive. I will be voting No.

Yours sincerely, Concerned Citizen.

government who ignores them.

This “advisory” self-appointed group is supported by the Prime Minister who warns of serious consequences for any government who ignores them.

They want to insert a political statement of “First Nation” into the Constitution to legitimise their First Nation claim for negotiating a treaty. The first properly constituted nation was established in 1901 when the States came together and formed a federation with a nationally elected government. There is only one nation and you can’t have a nation within a nation. The 1967 referendum gave Aborigines full citizen and equal voting rights before the law.

The 2023 referendum seeks to overturn equality before the law and give superior

Suprise rates comparison

SHEPPARTON'S council rate stands over three times higher than that of Stonnington's, a fact that may raise eyebrows given the socio-economic disparity between the two regions. Rates are determined by the property value, and with our rate being 3.22 times more, Shepparton property owners can feel the pinch.

Let's put this into perspective with a property valued at $500,000. In Shepparton, the annual council rate would be $1,676.62, while a parallel property in Stonnington would attract an annual council payment of merely $520.

This intriguing comparison lays bare an unexpected peculiarity in the world of council rates. While each locale boasts its unique allure, it's certainly an oddity that a regional township like Shepparton sees more substantial council rates than one of Victoria's wealthiest suburbs.

Whether this holds any great meaning or is simply a quirk of regional economics, it's a fact of life for residents and an interesting nugget for property owners to chew on.

Rates figures sourced directly from Greater Shepparton City Council and City of Stonnington Council websites respectively.

A message from Sam Birrell MP Federal member for Nicholls

THE Murray-Darling Basin Plan legislation that was presented to Parliament on September 6 has sent shock waves through our community, and there's concern that we may lose a significant proportion of the main economic driver of our community, which is irrigation water.

The Murray-Darling Basin Plan was supported by all sides of government.

I think most right-minded people agree with the concept of taking some water away from irrigation for the Commonwealth to use for environmental purposes. We want a healthy river system, and there have been some positive outcomes from local organisations using environmental water. The question over the plan has always been how much should be taken.

So far, well over 2,000 gigalitres has been taken away from irrigation licence.

That has damaged the economy in basin communities, and it has damaged people's ability to farm. But it has been done in good faith to try to get some better environmental outcomes.

The way that the then Labor Party started to do it, which was just to buy it outright from farmers, caused incredible distress and economic damage around basin communities.

A better way of doing it was through 'on-farm irrigation efficiency'. That's where, instead of just selling the water, the farmer 'sells' the water to the government for a premium on the proviso that, the farmer must use the money for an irrigation upgrade, whether it be a centre pivot, improved flood irrigation or drip irrigation, where more crop can be grown with less water.

The plan had an extra component of 450 gigalitres.

That was a deal done with South Australia at the last minute in the plan. The figure of 450 gigalitres is huge. It equates to the annual irrigation of 50,000 to 75,000 hectares of orchard. Crucially, that 450 gigalitre amount involved a caveat that it could not be taken if it would be socio-economically damaging to basin communities.

It had to be positive or neutral.

That was a very important and very well understood part of

the original plan that is being trashed by this new Labor version. Taking that water away damages society in the electorate of Nicholls and damages the economy.

Every bit of that water is used to grow something that we should be proud of, whether it's apples, pears, peaches, or dairy products, and it is so valuable because, when those things are grown, people get employed—not just the farmer who grows the produce but the people who are involved processing and packing the products, and those involved in getting that produce to market.

It could be turning milk into cheese, which is done in so many factories across the Goulburn Murray.

All of this has an amazing value. We talk about the cost of water, but we don't talk about the value of what it produces.

Labor's plan is to disregard the socioeconomic impact test, it is a retrograde step. I will fight against it.

This is such a damaging piece of legislation, and those who have proposed it should be ashamed.

RATES UNMASKED… Shepparton’s council rates, over three times higher than affluent Stonnington’s, raise eyebrows. Tatura local the new Rotary district governor

THERE’S a new governor in town, and she’s ready to bring hope and a local feel to the district. Tatura local, Juineta ‘Neta’ Kirby was sworn in as District 9790 Governor in Wangaratta earlier this year. Making Neta the first local Governor since Keppel Turnour of Shepparton, in 1976-77, and the first governor from Tatura. The district encompasses as far as Sunbury, Mt Beauty, Holbrook, Jerilderie, Deniliquin and everywhere in between.

Two passions Neta is focused on along with

Rotary will be at the forefront of her reign.

The first: Life’s Little Treasures. A charity dedicated to helping families of premature babies, which Neta and her family have taken on as a project. The second: Rotary is saying no to domestic violence, which Neta and Rotary Club Tatura are right behind.

“So many times, when I go and speak about both projects, people come up and say I'm a survivor, my child and my children were in the hospital for months,” said Neta.

Outside of Rotary, Neta has dedicated

her life to the well-being of children as an educator and therapist and now works as a Sandplay Therapist in Tatura and with Goulburn Valley Centre Against Sexual Assault in Shepparton. Which she is passionate about, along with cruising the road on her three-wheeler, Can Am Spyder.

Neta’s involvement with Rotary began in 1997 when she became the second woman inducted into the Tatura club. Achieving life membership after 25-year years in 2021. In April next year Shepparton will gear up

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said Council was looking forward to seeing people get behind the activation and experience the best things Greater Shepparton has to offer.

“We invite residents staying ‘Home for the Holidays’ to have family and friends over, and share the wonderful experiences available in the region,” he said.

“You don’t have to travel far to find great food and drinks and enjoy family activities. These types of activities are a great opportunity to encourage people to consume local, activate the economy and discover new things to do in their own community.”

On Saturday 23 September, there will be a very special bus doing the rounds, running on a loop from 10am to 5pm, departing from the Shepparton Train Station and stopping at Emerald Bank, SAM and KidsTown. Special activities and offers will be available at venues on the day.

The curious case of spring’s 42% rainfall drop

SPRING has sprung in Shepparton. As we dive into the new season, intriguing distinctions emerge when we compare the first 12 days of spring this year with those of the previous year.

Rainfall this year revealed a remarkable departure from the usual pattern. Despite having more rainy days than last year, 2023 experienced a surprising 42 percent reduction in total precipitation. A mere 14.6mm of rain accumulated over five days, in stark contrast to the substantial 25.2mm received across four days in the previous year.

Temperatures played a more noticeable role. In 2023, a trio of days boldly exceeded the 20°C mark, eclipsing the cooler spring days of 2022. It was a noticeable shift given last spring saw no days hit the 20°C mark during the same period.

However, as with most stories, spring has its nuances. While the days embraced warmth, the nights reverted to a cooler pattern, prompting us to reach for an extra blanket compared to the prior year.

The onset of spring in Shepparton for 2023 has offered us a duet of sun-soaked days and surprisingly chilly nights showing us that every season scripts its own unique story.

WARM DAYS, CHILLY NIGHTS… Data from the first 12 days of spring in Shepparton this year, which brought unexpected weather changes. Despite more rainy days, there was a 42% reduction in precipitation compared to the previous year. 2023 also saw three days exceeding 20°C, while 2022 had none. However, nights were cooler this spring, reminding us that each season has its unique tale to tell.

Breathing life into inland fishery

Transforming the local ecosystem, the Waranga Basin Fish Habitat Installation Project is set to improve fish habitats in Victoria and introduce a healthier, more diverse fish population. The project, spearheaded by the Goulburn Valley Association of Angling Clubs (GVAAC), aims to introduce native timber habitats to support the existing Redfin and the Golden Perch species, aided by the stocking of 750,000 Golden perch fingerlings over three years. This strategically designed project promises a significant boost in primary production, providing feeding, cover, and spawning benefits for prey like small fish and macroinvertebrates. For Golden perch fingerlings, this habitat offers better survival rates and growth opportunities, while adult predatory fish will find an accommodating

aggregation spot for migrating and feeding. Roland Huber, Chair of GVAAC, envisions the Waranga Basin becoming “one of the best inland recreational fisheries in Victoria” thanks to this endeavour. The project wouldn't be possible without the assistance

An open letter to the Australian Government

Dear Prime Minister,

For millions of regional Australians, local newspapers are the news source they trust the most to keep their community informed, connected and strong.

With misleading, fake and biased information flooding social media feeds, it has never been more important for Australians, especially those living beyond the major cities, to have access to independent local voices and accurate and reliable journalism.

The newspapers of the ACM network and the member newspapers of Country Press Australia provide this vital service to thousands of communities around the country. Some of our 300+ mastheads have been doing it for more than 180 years.

But a recent dramatic decline in federal government advertising in regional newspapers is threatening the future of the public interest journalism that is essential for informed citizens, consumers and communities.

In the 2022-2023 financial year, Australian Government advertising across the regional newspaper sector plunged by more than 70%.

We tell the stories that matter to the 9 million people who live in regional Australia. And yet the local newspapers serving 36% of the population get next to 0% of the government’s advertising spend.

Regional Australia deserves better from the Australian Government. Regional Australians deserve to see a fair share of their hard-earned tax dollars flowing back to their communities and the local newspapers they trust to keep them informed and connected.

Instead of bringing essential messages about government initiatives and services to highly engaged local newspaper audiences, Australian Government advertising campaigns favour foreign-owned, algorithm-driven digital giants that don’t employ regional journalists and instead devalue real news in their newsfeeds. Grants that provided temporary relief in the face of last year’s steep rise in the cost of newsprint were gratefully received, but this year’s federal budget outlay of $900,000 on yet more academic research to tell us what we already know won’t prevent more newspapers joining the 200+ titles that have closed across Australia over the past three years.

ACM and Country Press Australia call on the Australian Government to take meaningful action now to support regional newspapers, the jobs and public interest journalism they provide and the communities they serve.

As no fewer than three parliamentary inquiries led by MPs from across the major parties have previously recommended, the government should immediately:

1. Guarantee a fair share of its existing advertising budget is devoted to regional newspapers. Adopting the Victorian government’s simple policy of mandating that a full page of government advertising appear in every regional and community newspaper every week will provide publishers with certainty and sustainability.

2.Extend funding for cadet journalist training programs to grow the talent pool of regional reporters.

3. Commit to exploring a public interest journalism tax rebate, as previously recommended by the ACCC, and other tax incentives for regional publishers to hire more journalists and launch new publications.

Every week millions of regional Australians support trusted local newspapers and the accurate and reliable journalism they deliver. On behalf of our readers, we urge the Australian Government to do the same.

Yours sincerely,

The Adviser. Australia No.1:1680 Wednesday, September 20, 2023 – Page 13

Successful trip to Canberra for the region’s water

GREATER Shepparton City Council took the pressing issues of the region to Parliament on Thursday last week, with several important meetings held to discuss the effects the Federal Government's proposed water bill would have on the region.

Mayor Cr Shane Sali, Cr Geoff Dobson, and local dairy farmer and water advocate Natalie Akers, made the trip to Canberra to ensure the voices of the region were heard.

The Water Amendment (Restoring Our Rivers) Bill 2023, which was recently introduced to Parliament, would see legislative changes made to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan which would have devastating impacts on the food bowl of Australia – Greater Shepparton.

"It was important for us to take our message to Canberra to ensure the Government was aware how serious this proposed water bill is for regional communities like ours," Mayor, Cr Shane Sali said.

Cr Sali said the delegation wanted to ensure the flow on effects from a proposal like this were clearly understood, with this being the main topic of discussion during their meetings.

"We are committed to working with the Government on a solution and a better outcome for communities. This proposed water bill is not the solution for anyone – not for food production, not for the environment and not for the sustainability of communities - and

more work needs to be done."

"The trip to Canberra on Thursday was just the beginning and we will be doing everything we can to address this and ensure we protect our region's water and the important role it plays across the nation."

Grants to strengthen the community

FEDERAL Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell MP, has announced and welcomed nearly $150,000 in Federal Government funding for grass roots community organisations across Nicholls.

The Stronger Communities grants will see 12 community organisations receive a cash injection to support projects that aim to enhance the social wellbeing of regional

residents.

Mr Birrell said the grants of up to $20,000 dollars support worthy grass roots projects including the purchase of equipment to increase participation as well as facility upgrades to provide up to date modern facilities for communities to come together in.

“A range of different projects will come out of this funding, and I look forward to watching

them develop and locals of all ages benefit for generations to come,” he said.

“Many organisations are also continuing to recover from the effects of COVID-19 and the October floods. Clubs are building back their members, developing projects and many need to maintain their facilities.”

Stronger Community Grant recipients include Kyabram Blue Light, Goulburn Region

Pre-School Association, Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society, Echuca Moama Men’s Shed, Broadford Scout Group, Scout Association, Girgarre Facilities Committee, Shepparton Sailability, Numurkah Wunghnu Cemetery Trust, Murchison Football Club, Rochester Football and Netball Club, and the Tooborac Mechanics Hall and Reserve Committee.

A message from Jeremy Rensford,

Chair of Greater Shepparton Ministers’ Association

A MESSAGE from Jeremy Rensford, Chair of Greater Shepparton Ministers' Association Sharing. It's not something that comes naturally to humans! For example, put a single fun toy in the middle of ten toddlers and leave them to their own devices and see what happens. Unfortunately, we adults can sometimes be no different all these years later. I heard of a punter that quipped "The horse everyone will keep backing is self interest".

Continuing my reflections of a recent

trip to rural Africa, I saw glimpses of hope at how being unselfish and community-minded can give opportunity for transformational societal change. The minister's group there has a table banking arrangement. Essentially everyone puts their own money on the "table" sharing the little they have to be made available to whoever in their group is in need. One will take their share at that time, repay with modest interest, and more are eventually available for each member to draw on in their time of need. What a wonderful

contrast to corrupt leaders that are found everywhere including in their locale.

Jesus was the epitome of someone who shared and was unselfish. His entire life was lived in service to others. He had these golden instructions for us and led by example – "It is more blessed to give than receive" & "In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you".

May we take inspiration from His teaching, but even better, His personal example.

Blessings, Jeremy

Greater Valley Calisthenics winning on the road

CALISTHENICS FOR THE WIN... Greater Valley Calisthenics Sub-Juniors are the big winners in Echuca. Competitors:

TAKING their winning performance on the road, the Greater Valley Calisthenics (GVC) teams competed in Echuca last week, with the Subs-Junior team again taking out first place in their age group. There was a moment’s tension when the announcer called rival club Roselind the winner. But after a quick discussion off-stage and a recount, the GVC girls were awarded first place, taking the title by a mere two and a half points.

The Club and Free Arm events are where the GVC sub-junior

girls shine, comfortably leading the way in both performances to help lead them to victory in their age group. They put in strong showing across all six disciplines.

Held at Paramount Theatre in Echuca, all the teams from Tinie's to Master’s performed with grace and poise as they competed across the three-day event. Beginning with solos on Friday and wrapping up Sunday afternoon.

The GVC teams and soloists won’t have time to rest on their laurels with the Bendigo comp beginning this Thursday.

Unprecedented change or unwanted hurdle? Unravelling Australia’s new 60-day prescription plan

patient-centric initiative, there's a common concern amongst pharmacy owners about it affecting their revenue. Anderson states, "This is going to have a huge impact on pharmacies as it rolls out further. Reduced prescriptions may lead to cut staff, reduced hours, and even

Key to the success of this initiative is that the 60-day prescription must be mutually agreed upon between the patient and their healthcare provider - a necessary clause to ensure protection of best health interests.

The Department of Health has meticulously selected medications for this initiative, committing to the safety of larger supplies. These specific medicines involve Atorvastatin, Rosuvastatin, Metformin, Perindopril, and

more.

This initiative sparks a potential curtailing of pharmacy visits; a significant shift in Australia's healthcare landscape.

However, as Kate Boswell insists, "The whole thing needs finessing, but ultimately the concept is there." Bridget Anderson echoes these sentiments, "Beneath the initial issues, there's a promising initiative for certain patients."

Starting from September 1, 2023, around 100 common medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) will offer a 60-day prescription option. The rollout planned in three stages over a span of 12 months, ending by September 1, 2024, aims to cover over 300 medicines.

GVL Grand Final prediction

ECHUCA V KYABRAM

1 v 2 to decide the 2023 champion of the GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League.

The 2019 champion v the reigning premier and what a game it promises to be. Kyabram deserves its place in the grand final after two solid finals’ win in between a second semi-final loss to Echuca. The Murray Bombers have made their way back to Deakin Reserve thanks to victories over Seymour in the first week of the finals and then a three-goal win over Kyabram in week two of the final series. Echuca v Kyabram games have all been very different, but all ended in victories for the Murray Bombers in 2023.

In all three games, Kyabram have had their moments, but it has taken Echuca a purple patch in each, which has seen them kick multiple goals to put a gap on its arch-rival.

Kane Morris v Zac Norris in the ruck should be a sensational match-up. They are easily in the best few ruckmen in the competition and they will be looking to give their midfield group first use.

For the Bombers it will be Rhys Clark, Kane Herbert and Liam Ogden while the Murray Bombers it will be Sam Reid, Sam Willoughby and Jack McHale who will be keen to taste glory after missing 2022 due to suspension. And there will plenty of others that go through the midfield to have an impact. Both teams have plenty of weapons forward of the centre.

Kyabram has Anthony DePasquale, Tom Holman, Brad Mangan and Kyle Mueller. Echuca has Hugh Byrne, Cooper Barber and Liam Tenace as the main targets, but have

plenty of others including the midfielders who rest down there that chip in with goals. In the win over Kyabram in the second semi-final, the Murray Bombers had eight different goal-kickers kick their 15 goals. Defensively both are solid and have guys who can do jobs.

It will be interesting to see who the Murray Bombers give the job of minding the dangerous DePasquale. He proved a bit of X-factor against Euroa.

The run of Echuca will be interesting to see how Kyabram combat it. But that said, Kyabram has got guys who can run and carry. One of them who has been outstanding in 2023 - Brad Whitford.

The big question on most people’s lips is what role does Ben Reid play, given he hasn’t played a lot of footy in 2023 and will Cam Valentine as many expect return to lead the back six. Then, there is Lachie Smith and Jason Morgan. Premiership heroes of the Bombers and so important to their defensive structures. Smith missed the Euroa win with a calf problem while Morgan did play in the second semi-final loss but missed last Sunday’s preliminary final. He had previously missed the past four weeks, so whether he is good to go will be pivotal for the Bombers. But they have shown that they can win no matter who is the back six.

Echuca has an impeccable record against Kyabram.

Since Kyabram won the 2019 grand final against Echuca, the Murray Bombers have won their past seven matches against the Bombers. And, with that it is hard to go past the Murray Bombers. Tip: Echuca by 23 points.

Tatura soars to back-to-back glory

VICTORY

resonates in the air as Tatura Soccer Club retains their title in the 2023 Central Victorian League 1 Senior Men Super Cup. Showcasing stellar athleticism, they outperformed Shepparton South Soccer Club Inc with a decisive 4-2 outcome. Thomas Corso, Tatura's standout player, was recognised as the Player of the Match.

In the aftermath, Tatura's social media lit up with sentiments of pride, declaring, "It's

coming home to Ibis Land AGAIN". The formidable team from Tatura included Thomas Leech, who scored twice, complemented by Tristan Zito and Aaron Niglia, each contributing a goal. This back-to-back triumph reflects Tatura's dominance in the competition, affirming their steadfast superiority in the league. The 2023 Senior Men Super Cup confirms another hallmark year for Tatura Soccer Club.

BACK-TO-BACK… Tatura Soccer Club has successfully defended their title in the Central Victorian League 1 Super Cup 2023. Overcoming their rivals 4-2, they demonstrated impressive consistency, with one standout player earning match honours.

The Pontiff’s Perspective

ONE of the joys in my calling as a priest is commentating football on ONE FM Shepparton. I’ve been nicknamed ’The Pontiff,’ which is the inspiration for the name of this new column.

This coming Sunday marks the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League Grand Finals at Deakin Reserve in Shepparton.

The headline matches will feature Echuca and Kyabram in seniors’ football, with Echuca and Euroa facing off in A-Grade netball. We are on-air from 2pm on 98.5 ONE FM.

It’s been a long pilgrimage to the big dance for all teams competing for a premiership.

Across football and netball, Echuca leads the way with

six sides taking part in Grand Finals. The Shepparton Bears, Shepparton Swans and Mooroopna each have two teams competing. Euroa, Kyabram, Shepparton United and Seymour have one each.

The pilgrimage to get here has included long pre-seasons and home-and-away campaigns.

Sport is a huge part of our life. Just last weekend I announced to our parishioners at St Brendan’s that I’d been to our parish primary schools for footy colours day. The people were immediately engaged. There was some good laughs and banter when I informed them that, unfortunately, Collingwood was the most popular team in the schools.

Life too is a pilgrimage. For us believers, it’s to win a prize through faith that never withers (1 Corinthians 9:25).
