Round the roundabout

THERE will be a change in traffic conditions as works continue in the roundabout of Andrew Fairley Avenue / Lockwood Road / Old Dookie Road and the SPC entrance in Shepparton.

The works include upgrading the current roundabout to a fully signalised intersection that allows full truck turning movements in each direction and increases safety for all users, in particular regular pedestrian traffic.

The roundabout will be closed to all traffic from Wednesday

August 2 to Friday August 11 2023.As the works encroach on other areas of the intersection, traffic control will be utilised to maintain the flow of traffic.

Access into the adjacent homes and businesses will be maintained for the duration of works, however motorists are advised to expect delays and detours will be in place.

To ensure the safety of all working and travelling near the site, Council ask for all pedestrians to please avoid the area if

possible. For all those that wish to access SPC or another local business from the car parks, please follow any signage or traffic control personal.

The intersection will be under strict traffic management throughout the duration of works and Council reminds residents to obey all traffic management direction and signage. For further information visit greatershepparton.com.au or phone Council on (03) 5832 9700.

THE 2023 Victoria's Tiny Tourism Town awards have announced their winners, with Aireys Inlet taking home the gold, Red Hill South securing silver, and Jamieson receiving the bronze. Aireys Inlet, a delightful small coastal town, has been given the remarkable opportunity to represent Victoria in the highly esteemed Australian Top Tourism Town Awards.

These awards celebrate the distinct charm and attractions of tiny towns, highlighting their ability to captivate visitors and deliver an exceptional tourism experience within Victoria.

Representing Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley in the awards, Murchison also received well-deserved recognition as a local gem that offers an enchanting experience to travellers while providing respite from the fast-paced world with its captivating attractions and warm and friendly hospitality.

In light of Murchison's outstanding community response during the October 2022 flood event and to support the region's flood recovery, the Greater Shepparton City Council nominated the town for the 2023 Victorian Tiny Tourism Town award. Murchison's selection as a finalist not only made it a perfect representative but also brought great pride to the entire region.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, congratulated the winning destinations and acknowledged Murchison’s tourism industry and community for their amazing efforts in welcoming visitors

and promoting their town.

“We loved seeing the spirit of the community flourish after Murchison became a finalist, people excited about the awards, voting, connecting with local businesses, and promoting the town with friends and relatives,” he said.

Looking back to see an informed future

Shepparton Heritage Centre Grand Opening

PRESERVING THE PAST TO INFORM THE

THERE is perhaps nothing quite so fascinating as peeling back the dust cover of time to reveal the hidden gems of history, offering up as it does mere snippets of lives once lived but still indelibly linked to our own.

Preserving the past to inform the future is the motto imbued within all the careful preservation, archiving and curating work done at the Shepparton Heritage Centre (SHC) and after months of overhaul and preparation, the historical hub is thrilled to present its grand opening on Saturday, August 12 at 2pm.

Inviting one and all to attend, the afternoon will be jammed packed with new, captivating exhibitions, talks and displays promising to shine a light on Shepparton’s historical past.

Presenting a talk on ‘Shepparton’s Early History Buried Under Monash Park’, Mr John Dainton OA will deliver an absorbing history about the early development of the township along the river, revealing surprising facts about the

early settlement.

With a history dating back to the 1920s, there will also be an extensive range of Scouts memorabilia on show as well as an art and poetry exhibition dedicated to the ‘Facebook of her day’ columnist, humourist and artist, Mollie Hall, who entertained the good folk of Shepparton with her wit and gossip during the 1930s and 40s.

Utilising shelving from the original G J Coles in Fryers Street c. 1938, the new Research History Hub comprising the Shepparton News Archives, Greater Shepparton Archives and Extended Research Library will also open on the day and in the adjacent 1965 Scout Hall, ready for the inquiring public to peruse.

After great time and effort, SHC treasurer Kristy Rudd, is thrilled to be showcasing not only a range of new, captivating exhibitions at the centre but is proud to announce an extension to its history hub resources, complementing the combined work of volunteers and the Family History Group.

The Victorian Government is giving young drivers, aged between 18 to 25 years old in regional Victoria, the opportunity to get $5,000 towards a newer, safer car, when they trade in their old one.

Alcohol free and running to assist the community

POUNDING THE PAVEMENT FOR 300KM... to raise donations for Shepparton FoodShare and to build awareness around alcohol fuelled domestic violence, Jason Thomas (pictured) has set-up his own GoFund me page while also undertaking the challenge of a Dry July.

Pictured with Jason is Tracey from Shepparton Family and Financial Services in Mooroopna, who provide food relief to those in need in the local community. Photo: Supplied

POUNDING the pavement to run an impressive 300km this July, Jason Thomas openly admits that he absolutely hates the sport, in fact he despises it and to compound the matter he has relinquished all alcohol for the month to boot.

Reassuringly it’s not madness that drives Jason, but rather a motivation to combat an increasing rate of food insecurity in the community as well as to build an awareness around the prevalence of alcohol fuelled domestic violence.

A community mental health worker who runs a NDIS support business, Jason hopes to raise funds for Shepparton FoodShare, a not-for-profit organisation that redistributes donated food through 128 local, registered agencies.

“Economic hardship is hitting everyone

Early Years

in the community but for those with a disability who can’t improve their financial circumstances, services like FoodShare are becoming increasingly important to them.

“With donations falling at a time when economic hardship is increasing and more people are needing assistance, it's clear what I’m about. Times are getting tougher, and hunger exists in the community whether you realise it or not,” Jason said.

Encouraging people to go alcohol-free in July to raise funds for people affected by cancer, Dry July is an opportunity for Jason to also shine a light on the role alcohol plays in domestic violence.

“According to the World Health Organisation statistics, 55 percent of domestic abuse perpetrators drink alcohol prior to assault,” Jason said.

Having already clocked up 140Km

pounding the bush tracks around Mooroopna, Jason is keen to enjoy a gluten free beer again in August and hopes greatly that, “... People will get on board to assist those in need to get a feed and to ease the burden of the current tough times.”

To assist Jason in his quest, head to his GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme. com/f/this-is-s-ocial-responsibility-300kmchallenge or donate to the FoodShare bin at Woolworths on Archer Road, Shepparton after consulting the food list attached.

Branching out for our youngest learners

Local parents may not know them personally, but these specialist staff are dedicated to providing the best possible start for their pre-school children.

The Goulburn Early Childhood Improvement Branch works behind the scenes to oversee the programs and places serving our pre-schoolersincluding 30 Greater Shepparton kindergartens and the great many pre-school programs, people and services funded by the Victorian Government.

They are leading important early childhood reforms at a local level to ensure children are more “school ready” than ever before, including:

•Rolling out free 3-year-old kindergarten in the community

•Transitioning 4-year-old kinder into a new “Pre-Prep” program of play-based learning

•Adopting a place-based approach to early learning centres

“These ‘Best Start, Best Life’ reforms deliver what we know to be true,” Branch Manager Paula Jormakka says. “Children who experience a high-quality early childhood education and care program know how to play with their peers, actively participate in their own learning and grow as an individual.

“These skills help children find happiness and success at school and for life - and making that happen means everything to our team.”

Better tax system sought for all Victorians

AT a time where the cost of living is at inordinate level, causing ineffable pressure in most households, it’s an even bigger blow that Victorians pay the highest taxes in Australia.

Early last week, the Liberals and Nationals Coalition launched a discussion paper aimed at reforming Victoria’s tax system and easing the burden on singles, families and businesses, ‘Making Victoria’s Tax System Work – Reducing cost pressures for families, community groups and business’.

It seeks public input on how to make Victoria’s tax system more competitive, encourage investment in our state and ease the burden on our state’s taxpayers.

Shadow Treasurer Brad Rowswell was in Shepparton last week to reiterate the significance of public contributions to the review and encourage Victorians to address

any of the considerations raised in the discussion paper that they feel is relevant to them.

Submissions will close on October 31 2023 and the Coalition will be consulting further with communities before releasing milestone policies as part of its economic reform agenda in the lead up to the 2026 State Election.

A proposed new tax, which would be the Labor Governments 50th new and increased tax since it was elected in 2014, would slug tourists with a fee for staying in holiday accommodation in Victoria.

Wendy Lovell MP, State Member for Northern Victoria, spoke of how this would impact our region.

“How will this affect border towns in particular? Would it influence tourists to stay in Moama instead of Echuca for example?”, Wendy asked.

“Wages are generally lower here in the regions. Who feels the pinch the most from these excessive taxes? We do here. Victoria isn’t just Melbourne, and we need to hold the Labor Government accountable for regional towns and cities falling by the wayside.”

Brad Rowswell described the current Victorian tax system as punitive, “It discourages rather than incentivises investment and job creation in our state.

It adds costs to businesses and families actively trying to get ahead. It undermines choice and creativity.”

Greater accountability and transparency around taxes is being sought well ahead of the next election to ensure cost pressures are reduced for families, community groups and businesses where possible. Submissions are now open for all members of the community to have their voices heard.

LETTERS Letters to the Editor

THE VOICE

Dear Editor, SENATOR Jacinta Price (The Adviser 12/7) raises some very serious concerns about what the unelected and unrepresentative Uluru group are seeking in the referendum.

The PM is claiming the Voice will only be in an advisory capacity, but this is not what the Uluru group is seeking. They want control of a democratically elected government from everything to submarines to parking meters by an unrepresentative Indigenous group based on race.

The leading 'Yes' campaigner is accusing the 'No' people of being uncaring and racist when in 1967 a referendum gave Aboriginal people the same citizen and voting rights

was delighted to hear she was a winner, “Oh heavens, that’s great!” she exclaimed.

One last winner wishes to remain anonymous.

GMCU branch services manager, Heath Barton, congratulated Jodi on her big win.

“A special congratulations to Jodi for taking away the grand prize! It’s always great to see our community members being rewarded for supporting their local businesses. Thank you

to the hundreds of businesses and thousands of shoppers for getting involved and making the 2023 GMCU $25,500 Giveaway one of the best yet,” said Mr Barton.

Congratulations to all the winners this year and thank you to everyone for supporting the Giveaway. Most importantly though, for supporting local businesses. Your contribution helps our region to thrive.

We welcome Letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain defamatory material, or information of a personal nature which is not in the public domain.

as everyone else. It is the 'Yes' people that want to destroy this equality before the law which is enshrined in the Constitution and article one of the Universal Charter of Human Rights.

We don't want political statements in the Constitution which gives claims to elitist rights and privileges. We are all equal before the law.

The 'Yes' people discount this and the UN Universal Charter of Human Rights. The WA socialist government of Mark McGowan stripped WA farmers of the right to farm without interference by requiring them to obtain an Aboriginal cultural and heritage officer if he wants to disturb the soil deeper than 50 millimetres. Failure to do so will

incur severe penalties. They will strangle farming activities. It is all about power and control. A Voice is not needed. Aboriginal people already have a minister representing their rights and interests.

I will be voting 'No'.

Yours sincerely,

Ambushing with fabulism and happiness

FROM JOURNALIST TO ESTEEMED LITERARY AWARD WINNER... An offbeat, short story written with a light touch and imbued with humour and surprising fabulism has won this year’s coveted Furphy Literary Award. ‘Away to Me’ is the title of Jen Rewell’s (pictured) $15K prize winning short story, which was meritoriously selected from over 600 entrants. ‘Away to Me’ will take pride-of-place in this year’s Furphy Anthology, where it will no doubt receive a very appreciative reception. Photo: Supplied

JEN Rewell emerged as this year's victorious writer, receiving congratulations for her heartwarming and offbeat love story titled 'Away to Me.' Jen was presented with a generous $15K cheque during the ceremony, and her captivating story will become the centrepiece of the 2023 Furphy Anthology. Jen will also be invited to take-up a residency at La Trobe University to further nurture and share her craft.

On behalf of the judges, Anson Cameron said of Jen Rewell’s winning story, “It’s a love story, written with a light touch. It’s funny. The language is clear, and the author has a close knowledge of the rural world that Joseph Furphy would have recognised and enjoyed. It’s populated with rodeo clowns and decorated with CB radios atop kitchen fridges … a woman feeds her lover steamed lemon curd pudding. I

salivated freely while reading it. But above all the story has a pigheaded refusal to conform to reality. Just when you think it might be headed for a clichéd gloom it ambushes you with fabulism and, perish the thought, happiness.”

Hailing from a small beachside town in Western Australia, Jen’s educational journey led her to study Media at university, and she later completed the Broadcasting course at the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). With a background as a journalist and copywriter, she eventually rekindled her passion for creative writing in 2020. Winning a mentorship in the Emerging Writers Program by the Fellowship of Australian Writers WA, she now resides in Perth, diligently working on her debut novel.

With over 600 entrants and a long list of 71 exceptional

short stories, second and third place getters were also commended on the night. Eugenie Pusenjak’s ‘The Drey’ was awarded second place while Natalie Vella’s ‘The Lucky Country’ came third. Receiving cash prizes of two and three thousand dollars respectively, the award-winning authors will also have their exceptional short stories published in this year’s Furphy Anthology.

Taking issue with the date

FEDERAL Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, has accused Water Minister, Tania Plibersek, of exploiting the June 2024 deadline for the Murray-Darling Basin Plan for political gains at the expense of local communities' livelihoods.

According to Mr. Birrell, Minister Plibersek is making unfounded claims that the Basin Plan will fall short of its water recovery targets by 750 gigalitres.

"While the Minister talks about the threat to the environment and possible extinction of species, the Murray Darling Basin Authority report card makes it clear that progress is being made, but more time is required," Mr Birrell said.

Mr Birrell said the MDBA report card acknowledges the impact widespread flooding across the Basin has had on supply, constraint, and efficiency measures under the Sustainable diversion limit adjustment mechanism (SDLAM).

"This mechanism is designed to deliver a 605 GL/y offset, allowing the Basin Plan to be achieved with less water recovered from consumptive users such as towns, communities, farmers and industries," Mr Birrell said.

"In its first budget the Albanese Government set aside a secret amount for community wrecking water buybacks based on commitment to complete the plan by the 2024 deadline, rather than granting SDLAM projects more time to achieve sustainable outcomes.

"The MDBA report card says water recovery at the Basin scale remains at 98% for surface water and 92% for groundwater recovered against the Bridging the Gap target.

"That target will be met, and with additional time so will the offsets.

"Another 450 gigabytes the Water Minister wants to carve out to complete the plan 'in full' is additional to the water recovery target.

"The Basin Plan has always been about long-term sustainability; it must be given time to achieve the outcomes without doing irreparable harm to communities that also rely on water," Mr BirreFEDERAL Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, has accused Water Minister, Tania Plibersek, of exploiting the June 2024 deadline for the Murray-Darling Basin Plan for political gains at the expense of local communities' livelihoods.

According to Mr. Birrell, Minister Plibersek is making unfounded claims that the Basin Plan will fall short of its water recovery targets by 750 gigalitres.

"While the Minister talks about the threat to the environment and possible extinction of

species, the Murray Darling Basin Authority report card makes it clear that progress is being made, but more time is required," Mr Birrell said.

"The Basin Plan has always been about long-term sustainability; it must be given time to achieve the outcomes without doing irreparable harm to communities that also rely on water," Mr Birrell said.

No more Family Day Care through Council

SADLY, The Greater Shepparton Family Day Care service which has provided innumerable children and their families with quality, in-home options for care will be discontinued by Council from September 30, 2023.

Family Day Care is a service where children are cared for and educated in the homes of registered educators. Despite several efforts to attract new educators, Council has experienced a significant decline in their numbers over the past years.

This decline has made it increasingly challenging for Council to maintain the necessary support team and infrastructure required to comply with the National Education and Care Services Law and associated regulations. Consequently, Council has determined that it is no longer financially viable to continue operating the Family Day Care service.

Council is actively collaborating with educators to facilitate their transition to alternative providers, wherever possible. Council has also ensured that all families and educators are aware of this decision. Louise Mitchell, the Director of Community, acknowledged the difficulty of exiting the service but emphasised its necessity. Council is committed to assisting educators and families during this transition and prioritising the uninterrupted education and care of the children.

Over the course of the next three months, leading up to September 30, 2023, Council staff will be available to provide support to families and educators as they transition to new arrangements. The aim is to ensure a smooth and well-supported transition for all parties involved.

SYNDICATE SMASHED

Detectives have dismantled a local drug trafficking syndicate accused of distributing large quantities of methylamphetamine and GHB throughout the Shepparton region.

Following the investigation, police arrested 10 people from Shepparton, Kialla and Tatura.

Five of those arrested have been charged with either trafficking a large commercial quantity of methylamphetamine or trafficking a commercial quantity of methylamphetamine, which comes with a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment for both charges.

As part of the investigation, detectives executed eight search warrants, seizing:

• 550 grams of methylamphetamine worth approximately $110,000

• $60,000 in cash, which investigators will allege is proceeds of drug trafficking

• Six allegedly stolen vehicles

• Two firearms

"Community assistance is crucial in helping us reduce the harm drugs cause in the community", said Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Shortis.

A work ethic to span five decades

TOM Farren, by all accounts, is the kind of man who gets great satisfaction rolling up his sleeves to help someone out.

Accomplishing a career that has effectively spanned fifty years within the same job, Tom’s calling began at the Trevaskis Nissan dealership in 1969 at the tender age of 14 where he undertook a work experience placement.

Situated on the north-east corner of Archer Street and Benalla Road, the Datsun, Peugeot and Renault Dealership (garage and petrol station) soon offered the young North-Tech student a mechanics apprenticeship. Taking to the trade like a duck to water, Tom soon progressed to service manager before the business was purchased by the Thompson Motor Group in 2003.

Traversing the ownership change over, Tom also served as ‘the main RACV guy’ who fulfilled the dealerships’ role as an agent, and it was in this job that Tom’s big-

hearted reputation really shone through.

“I think Tom just enjoys making people happy and that was one of the reasons he did the RACV for so many years. If you locked your keys in your car or if you had a flat battery out in the rain, Tom was your man, and that’s the sort of person he is,” said Thompson Motor Group director, Jarrod Thompson.

Sticking with Thompson Motor Group as it made its big move up the Midland Highway in 2008, Tom has long since relinquished his 2.30am RACV callouts but has continued, nonetheless, to firmly embed himself as a much loved and respected member of the motor group family.

“He’s a guy that everyone loves, I can’t say enough positives about him” Jarrod said, before adding, “Tom presents a loyalty, commitment and a work ethic that is very special and you don’t see that as much anymore.

“I know everyone goes to work but for Tom, he really wants us and the people

around him to be pleased with the job he does. Fifty years with such a conviction is remarkable.”

Having worn many hats and striving for excellence in each of his roles within the dealership over the years, Tom is deservedly winding down his current position in quality control, while his grandson Kyle, has come on board to detail the service cars.

When asked about his longevity and his exceptional commitment to the dealership throughout his singular career, Tom said, “They’re a good group of boys. I get along with everyone and talk to everyone. It’s never just been a job to me, it’s socialisation. For me, I come INTO work, it not TO work.”

With a much-deserved retirement shining bright on the horizon, Tom is looking forward to holidaying with his wife Vicki. Perhaps it will be a cruise, or hopefully for Tom a trip to Disneyland to see the Star Wars exhibition. May the force be with you, Tom on your next chapter!

BENALLA V ECHUCA

Benalla will be looking to test itself against the benchmark of the competition in a bid to finish its season on a positive manner. The Saints were able to get themselves off the bottom of the ladder after recording their third win of the season.

They were able to do that by producing a strong five-goal last quarter against Rochester. They know this will be tough by they will turn to Christopher Welsh, Jordan Wolff, Joshua Marchbank, Henry Hill and Wade King to try and lead the way.

Echuca was challenged by Euroa last weekend. The reigning premier was able to shake of the gallant challenge from the Pies to remain at the top of the ladder. They will be hoping to welcome back a few regulars who missed the win.

Matthew Lias, Cameron Valentine, Sam Willoughby, Jack Evans, Noah Langborne and Liam Tenace will be looking to continue their good form to ensure the visitors get the win.

Tip: Echuca.

SHEPPARTON V MANSFIELD

This will be an intriguing match-up as Mansfield comes to Deakin Reserve in a bid to slam the door shut on Shepparton’s slim finals aspirations. The Bears have come alive in the past fortnight with wins over Kyabram and Shepparton United. The United win was hard fought and came only after a strong second half.

Co-coach Edward Lindon was outstanding. He usually plays in defence, but moved to the forward line where he kicked three goals.

Rising star nominee Jacob Watts has had a brilliant few weeks since he was nominated. He was good again last round with three goals in the come-from-behind win.

BENALLA V ECHUCA

Echuca will be looking to rebound from its narrow loss to finals bound and ladder leader Euroa. The Murray Bombers’ were missing some key players and they will be hoping to regain them ready to launch an assault come September. Benalla was competitive against Rochester and they will look to Mikaylah Lessing, Natalie Pritchard and Ella Sheehan to lead the way.

Lauren Jones, Ash Mangan and coach Belinda Lees will be important to help the Murray Bombers bounce back and bank another four points to lock in a finals spot.

Tip: Echuca.

SHEPPARTON V MANSFIELD

Shepparton will look to take another step towards qualifying for the September action when it welcomes the winless Mansfield. The Bears were challenged at different stages of its win over arch rival Shepparton United. Shooters Caitlin Hill and Ella Sidebottom were important in the win over the Demons. They took their opportunities while youngsters Eliza Bicknell and Caitlyn Tuohey benefitted for more court time in the absence of some key players. They both contributed to the win and coach Tracey Brereton is likely to give the duo more game time against the Eagles.

Meg Mahoney, Alicia Foster and Nelle

Izac Artavilla, Tyron Baden and Jonty Wardle were others to contribute to the win against the Demons.

There is no doubt the belief is there with the young Bears, but Lindon and fellow co-coach Xavier Stevenson will be looking for a fast start and scoreboard pressure to sow the seed of doubt in the minds of the visiting Eagles.

Ben Christopher, Lachlan Murphy-Dale, Dylan Lowry, Cameron Arnold and Tom Dunstan will be the players trying to lead the way to victory. They know a win against the Bears and it is season over for the home team and their place in the top six will be secure.

Tip: Shepparton.

EUROA V ROCHESTER

Euroa will be looking to get back on the winners’ list after back-to-back losses to the top two teams on the ladder.

Despite the losses, coach Scott Rowan would have taken plenty of positives out of those games heading into the match-up with Rochester. Rowan would be hoping to have a few regulars back that missed the matchup against Echuca last round.

The Magpies had as many as 10 players who couldn’t be considered for selection, which they hope to regain a few back for the game against the Tigers.

Jacob Gleeson, Max Gleeson, Nathan Stewart, Lincoln McKernan, Jake Penman and Jett Trotter will be looking to lead the way for the Pies.

Hamish Hooppell, Dylan Gordon, Blake Evans, Nathan McCarty and Grant Fuller will be the Tigers working hard to ensure they are competitive for four quarters against the home team.

Tip: Euroa.

Football previews R16 SPLITROUND NETball previews R16

Cousins will be looking to try and lead the Eagles to their first win of the season, but in the end, it will be the depth of the Bears that will prove the difference in the end.

Tip: Shepparton.

EUROA V ROCHESTER

Rochester will be out to continue its good form when it takes on the ladder leading Euroa. The Tigers have been one of the form teams of the competition, having won four of their past five matches, including the scalps of Shepparton and Tatura.

Linda Rasmussen and Bridgette Holt were outstanding in the win over Benalla to keep alive their finals aspirations. They currently sit four points outside the top six in seventh place. Shooters Teal Hocking (41) and Morgan Dingwall were important in the win over the visiting Saints and they will need to be accurate to give the Tigers the best chance of upsetting the Magpies. The Magpies had a fantastic win over Echuca which took it back to the top of the ladder. The win over the Murray Bombers will give the Magpies plenty of confidence and it also showed that they can win in a low-scoring scenario.

Kellie Davison, Tylah Marchbank and Sophie Owen were important in the win and if they can feed the shooters, then the Magpies will fell it can get the job done over the Tigers. Tip: Rochester.
