SHEPPARTON has been abuzz with artistic expression, with a slew of creative and inspiring events on across the region as part of the Shepparton Festival’s massive 27th year.

“Coming to the final weekend of the festival, I’m looking back on some spectacular programming and looking

forward to more!” said festival director, Kristen Retallick.

“Thank you Shepparton, for getting behind these artists and their work. We have a supportive and curious arts community that I’m very proud to be part of. I’m inspired by the presence I have felt amongst the audiences and artists, so we’re already planning for 2024!” she said.

Some programs still to come are sold out like The Wine Bluffs, and there are limited places left for ‘Close to Home Project’, a Victorian College of the Arts dance students' performance, choreographed by Kristina and Sadé Alleyne from Alleyne Dance (London UK). Continued Page 14

Pushing to stop water buybacks

FEDERAL Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell has led vehement opposition to the Federal Government’s plan to use water buybacks to complete the Murray-Darling Basin Plan which he expressed to parliament would socially and economically damage regional communities.

In an ardent and shared view with Nationals Leader, David Littleproud, Mr Birrell’s Private Members motion called on the Government to extend the timeline for completion of the Murray-Darling Basin plan and work with Basin communities on projects to recover further water for the environment in a manner that has a neutral or positive socio-economic impact.

“The Labour Government’s current approach to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan poses an existential crisis to what has been one of the great food bowls of Australia,”

Mr Birrell said.

“If a farmer sells a water licence back to the government, the farmer may well be compensated, but the milk or fruit that the farmer once grew, grows no longer, and the employed in the supply chain that gets the product to the consumer is no longer employed, and our nation is poorer in so many ways.”

Mr Birrell said an additional 450Gl was an add on to the plan, agreed in 2018 on the basis that any recovery met a social and economic neutrality test.

“I understand that any further removal of water will have devastating effects on basin communities: economic destruction, significantly reduced production and damaged export markets.

“That’s the exact opposite of socioeconomic neutrality,” Mr Birrell said.

Turn the clocks BACK

A REMINDER to one and all that clocks are to be wound BACK one hour on Sunday, April 2, 2023, marking the end of the 2022/2023 daylight saving period, or to be precise, clocks are to be set or wound back one hour from 3am to 2am on this date.

Daylight savings is a practice of

advancing clocks during spring, so that evening daylight lasts longer, with adjustments made in reverse during autumn to bring clocks back to standard time.

Australia first observed daylight saving time in 1916.

Celebrating diversity and belonging at GSSC

ONE of Greater Shepparton Secondary College’s (GSSC) major annual events, Harmony Week is a vibrant celebration which brings together

the school’s diverse cultural backgrounds in a display of pride through performance, building inclusivity and respect.

Belonging for everyone, this year’s national Harmony Week theme, was centre stage and on show at GSSC on Friday, March 17 as students and teachers represented 14 ethnic backgrounds through 20 cultural performances in front of a whole school audience.

Describing the significance and history of Siva Tau, a traditional Samoan war dance performed by Year 7 to 10 boys, student Sharon Simaika said, “The dance represents strength and unity, and it shows our opponents that we are here to dominate.

“With this dance we’re showing our school that we are proud of our roots and we’re proud how far our ancestors have come. We’re dedicating this performance to our parents for sacrificing everything to give us a life in

Australia.”

Eager to present his troupe’s traditional Punjabi folk dance, Bhangra , senior student Rajbir Gakhal said, “The Harmony Week concert is a great opportunity to show all the students and all the teachers at school our culture, and our traditions.”

Expounding upon the significance of Harmony Week celebrations at GSSC, executive principal, Barb O’Brien said, “Harmony Week is one of our major celebrations because it is all

about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, from our Traditional Owners to our multicultural communities.

“It has been fantastic to see our student’s passion for their cultural heritage and traditions shine through their performances and throughout the week through various activities, including our around the world food safari hosted by our Year 11 and 12 hospitality students.”

GV Health far from complete: O’Keeffe calls for stage two funding

FOLLOWING the State Health Minister’s visit to Shepparton, Member for Shepparton, Kim O’Keeffe, said she is “dumbfounded” by MaryAnne Thomas’ claims the redevelopment “is complete.”

“The Minister visited the GV Health hospital site and made absolutely no mention of the future funding for the second stage of its redevelopment,” Ms O’Keeffe said. “Instead, she took the occasion to declare ‘the hospital is complete and avoided questions regarding stage two funding.”

Stage two involves constructing an integrated cancer centre, increased acute and subacute inpatient capacity, additional spaces for ambulatory care services for specialist clinics,

additional parking and a helipad, and clinical support and diagnostic services.

Ms O’Keeffe said GV Health received $26M to build its Integrated Cancer Centre but additional budget allocation is required to close the funding gap to enable the ICC project to proceed.

She said to deliver the best practice cancer care and treatment across the Goulburn Valley, the Minister and State Government must concede the job is not finished and commit to the funding needed to proceed.

“Right now, patients are not able to have treatment locally, which causes enormous stress at an already incredibly difficult time for them, their families and support networks,” she said.

“Because we are regional, there are the additional costs in accommodation, travel and taking leave from their employment while doing their best to care for the patient and still trying to juggle lives and other family members back home.

“In too many cases those close to the patient cannot be there to support them during their time of need, due to the distance and all the other challenges of being regionally based.

“The Minster has said healthcare is a priority across the State. I am seeking the Minister’s support in making sure that the GV Health redevelopment be completed, and that the healthcare of the people in my electorate is also a priority."

Local experience sees students aim for stars

Greater Shepparton Secondary College and the Mooroopna Children and Families Centre are the iconic investments in the Shepparton Education Plan.

Yet much of the investment in improving education outcomes for our young people is being made behind-thescenes by some of our best educators.

Brendan Bicknell, Principal of Guthrie St Primary School, heads the Aspirations and Extension Working Group – one of a series of groups dedicated to the goals of the Shepparton Education Plan.

“We want all our primary students to be able to explore their aspirations for the future and know they can be all they want to be,” he says. “It’s ensuring our young

people have equal opportunities and the incentive to make their dreams come true.”

A tangible example of the group’s work saw more than 600 Year 5 students attend the recent Aspirations Day at Greater Shepparton Secondary College, where secondary teachers, industry and tertiary organisations staged hands-on career and higher education experiences.

Brendan is typical of the experience and local knowledge driving the Shepparton Education Plan. In primary school leadership for more than 20 years, he began his teaching career in Wilmot Rd and Gowrie St classrooms. He comes from a family of respected principals, with sisters Barbara O’Brien head of Greater Shepparton Secondary College and Denise Howley, formerly head of Bourchier St.

CAPS off to the 80 students who reached a major milestone on Tuesday, March 21, as they formally graduated from La Trobe University, Shepparton campus.

With 60 students in attendance at the Riverlinks Eastbank ceremony, and with 20 students in absentia, this year’s cohort of graduates attained qualifications in a range of bachelor and diploma courses including nursing, social work, education, early childhood education, business (accounting) and the arts.

Master’s degrees were also presented to faculty of education, nursing and social work students.

Catering to a broad range of student requirements, La Trobe University Shepparton offers a highly flexible learning environment for regional students, encompassing both online and face-to-face teaching and studying.

With 44 percent of the campus’ students being mature

age, typically juggling work, family and study and with a student body that mirrors the region’s vibrant ethnic diversity, La Trobe Shepparton is resolute in responding to the region’s unique needs.

In salute of Tuesday’s graduates, Shepparton head of campus, Elizabeth Capp said, “La Trobe is committed to ensuring opportunities to enrol at university are available to students in our region, so it is always a thrill to celebrate Shepparton students at graduation.”

Commenting on the $10.5M campus redevelopment that will get underway later this year, doubling health placements and broadening opportunities for local students, Elizabeth said, “With new clinical teaching facilities, flexible learning spaces and new technology our students will have more spaces to collaborate, study and socialise, and gain the experience and skills needed to excel in the workplace.”

No further orders from the State

Government

Cutting costs at the expense of local manufacturers, says local manufacturer

SINCE ramping up production in 2020 to meet demand for disposable face masks, local manufacturer, Med-Con, has invested over $1M in upgrades to produce Australian-made masks.

Despite initially receiving support from the State Government, no further orders have been placed. Med-Con operations manager, Grant McGrath, expressed his disappointment that preference was never given to Australian manufacturers.

“We never ever asked to have 100 percent of the State Government’s sales. We’re happy with 10 or 14 percent. Just give us something," said Grant.

“The State Government never learned from what happened. We had a situation where borders were closed, and we couldn’t get face masks. We were able to produce masks for the State Government, so we

helped supply their face masks for the hospitals and so forth,” Grant said.

“We don’t want that to happen again, so we need a couple of companies in Australia that can still make face masks. If they don’t buy off us, what happens is that we’re not going to manufacture because we won’t have a manufacturing plant, we’ll have gone to China ourselves and say, alright, I can’t beat them, so I’ll join them.”

He wants protections offered to Australian manufacturers like Med-Con and SPC, that produce essential products that would harm Australians if we were unable to import.

“Somewhere along the line, there’s got to be a rationale where the Government says okay, we’re going to give you a 30 percent rebate an allowance or something to cover costs of these things that we as a government force business to do,” Grant

said.

The State Government procured almost 6M surgical face masks from Med-Con in 2020 and said its stockpile has not been exhausted. A Department of Health spokesperson told The Adviser that, “When further supplies of surgical masks and PPE are required, suppliers will be approached using the standard government procurement process.”

“PPE, including surgical masks, is sourced from a range of supplies across Australia, including Victoria and overseas, as it's not always possible to source supplies locally.

“HealthShare Victoria, as the independent public sector provider responsible for sourcing PPE, is committed to promoting ethical decision-making and appropriate strategies that benefit Victoria’s health care services.”

“JUST GIVE US SOMETHING”... Med-Con operations manager Grant McGrath says no further orders have been made with local manufacturers for surgical masks and PPE, despite their mammoth effort to supply government organisations at the beginning of the pandemic in the absence of local supplies.

Approximately 170 graduates commemorated the completion of their GOTAFE studies in Shepparton last week. Pictured is Cert III Business student Jay-Leigh Hillebrand (right), who was invited to speak at the ceremony. She thanked her GOTAFE trainer, Julie McHenry (left) for their support so she could juggle education, family, work and long-distance.

Graduates shine at GOTAFE graduation

THE 170 GOTAFE graduates celebrating the completion of their studies stole the show at the GV Hotel last week, sharing the stage with swag of big names that spoke at the ceremony, including 2022 Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott, entertainer Tim Campbell and nurseturned-comedian Georgie Carroll.

“The graduation ceremonies are an important opportunity to celebrate the success of our students and their family, friends, peers and trainers who have supported them throughout their studies,” said Travis Heeny, GOTAFE CEO.

“We are incredibly proud to have such a high calibre of guest speakers to inspire and motivate the graduating students as they enter the workforce and begin their professional journeys.”

One such student who has shown remarkable commitment is Jay-Leigh Hillebrand. Each Monday, Jay-Leigh would travel for more than an hour from Kilmore to complete her Certificate III in Business in Shepparton.

“The hardest part of studying and trying to juggle studying, work, family and life was probably trying to find the common ground and balance between all of them. I was very, very lucky though that Julie, my trainer, was able to allow me to do some days from home to take care of my children or whatever was needed,” she said, adding that she had a great support network during her studies.

“I’m super excited to graduate because I didn’t think I would. I thought that I would struggle and fall behind. But I was lucky enough to never get to that point, and I always had help, so I was able to achieve the goals that I wanted and now I get to celebrate.”

Jay-Leigh said she plans on continuing her studies at GOTAFE in bookkeeping. Fellow graduates completed studies in a range of courses including Baking and Hospitality, Business and IT, Community Services, Education, Hair and Beauty, Health and Nursing, Land and Animals, Technical Trades and VCAL.

Stop hurting Basin communities

Last week in Parliament I moved a motion and called on the Labor Government to extend the deadline of the Murray Darling Basin Plan. If more water needs to be recovered for the environment, the Government needs to work with Basin communities and develop water saving projects that have a neutral or positive socio-economic impact on the wider community.

If water is taken from our region, the produce that the farmer once grew, grows no longer, and the employed in the supply chain that gets the product to the consumer is no longer employed. This has a domino effect and results in a reduction in spending in the community, risking local businesses and local jobs. It also means the produce we eat, is no longer grown down the road. Lower production means higher prices at the checkout.

Aged care and workforce shortages

Aged care centres across our region are continuing to suffer from workforce shortages.

However, new reforms which come into effect on July 1 will require more staff at centres including hard to find registered nurses. Aged Care homes are continuing to tell me their worries about what this means for their centre if RN quotas are not met. This week I spoke about the need for the Government to look at regional aged care homes on a case-by-case basis and not to penalise homes and jeopardise the future of a centre without looking at their current personalised system of care.

This also led me to once again calling for the Albanese Government fund a Clinical Health School in Shepparton. This centre would help train more nurses and allied health professionals locally.

Regional funding needed yesterday

Travelling across the region I’m constantly hearing from locals about the need to fund grass roots community infrastructure projects.

But to do this, we need the Albanese Government to open regional funding schemes. It’s not fair that regional grants, previously developed and delivered to our region by the Nationals have been scrapped like the Building Better Regions Fund. This grant helped fund dozens of local projects across our region including the thriving Girgarre Botanic Gardens.

In October, the Government promised new regional funding schemes, but nearly 6 months on there’s nothing for organisations or councils to apply for to fund these economic and social driving projects. I’m demanding grants for regional communities open, and I won’t stop until I see money on the table for our community.

Listening directly to you

I’m continuing to travel across the region as part of my ‘Sam on the Street’ tours to hear directly to the people that know our community best – you. Keep up to date with the times and locations of the listening posts by following my social pages. I’m here to listen and help with matters that are affecting you and your community.

Agritech takes food bowl to the future

WITH the ability to decrease processing costs to just 32c per kilogram, MAF’s integrated technology grades fruit into bins, to ensure the highest value usage using electronic sensors and highly sophisticated software.

Testing for strict market requirements, fruit is sorted according to weight, colour, shape and sugar content as well as being analysed exhaustively for defects. Once categorised, fruit is directed into flumes, filling bins for storage.

The 5,000-bin capacity, temperature and atmosphere controlled cold storage features a 35m tall, automated storage retrieval system (ASRRS) recalling any bin from the vast stack promptly, sending fruit on its way to be packed by robotic arms via both the autonomous and semiautonomous packing lines.

Officially opened in January this year, and building to full capacity, FruitCo is expected to process 200,000 bins of fruit alone in its first 12 months, near doubling the 107,000 bins achieved in 2021 and will eventually incorporate three lines of fruit; apples, pears and stone fruit.

At heart an exporter, 75-year-old Geoffrey Thompson Holdings’ new facility will foster new global opportunities, with its embedded efficiencies making it more competitive than ever before.

FruitCo’s competitive prowess, also signals good news for regional growers, as

Geoffrey Thompson director and board chairman, Robert Bryant said, “While we will look to the whole of Australia to meet our growing demand, it will be the Goulburn Valley that will be our main source of fruit.

“As it is now, fruit is going out of the GV to processors elsewhere and there are transport costs involved in that, which is unnecessary. Eventually we will be able to cater for all the fruit in the GV if growers want to supply it and we will bring fruit in as well.”

On track to reaching its ‘grand and audacious’ 2030 target, as Mr Bryant calls it, FruitCo is continuing to finetune its technical software, calibrating the lines to suit the specificities and realities of the Australian market.

Having already modified the lines to suit ever changing regulations, technical director and MAF Agrobotics engineer Nicholas de Chacaton said, “We are continuously working to make the technical software on the site more efficient.

“We are learning, and we are providing solutions to real world demands and the system is having to be modified to take into account the complexity of the modern agricultural world.

“The Australian market is attending to some very complex agricultural activitywith restrictions and on chemicals, HR and food safety but our lines are flexible and highly responsive to the market.”

Plan to grow Toolamba Primary comes at de-contamination cost

THE purchase of land adjacent to Toolamba Primary School would take the small school into the future, catering for expected growth in the town.

Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, has renewed her call for the State Government to purchase the vacant block of land. Ms Lovell first raised the purchasing of this parcel of land in December 2021, and said the Toolamba P.S. council had since submitted a business case supporting the purchase to the Victorian Schools Building Authority.

Addressing the Minister for Education, Natalie Hutchins, Ms Lovell said a local family had offered the land to the school at approximately 50 percent of its market value. The block had been valued in September 2022 at $220,000.

However, it has been determined that the land contains contaminated soil, with de-contamination costs estimated at $113,000.

Ms Lovell said the news of the contamination was disappointing, but that the purchase of the land was a chance to future-proof Toolamba P.S., and an opportunity that Ms Lovell says cannot be missed.

“Toolamba is in a high growth area and the currently landlocked primary school is expected to grow significantly in the future.

“The vacant land will future-proof Toolamba Primary School and I call on the Minister to provide the full funding to purchase and de-contaminate the block of land,” said Ms Lovell.

V/Line fares to be slashed

THE wait is almost over, with the price of V/Line fares to drop from Friday, March 31.

A cap will be introduced to the daily travel cost anywhere in the state at $9.20, bringing regional fares in line with Metro

Melbourne daily rate fares. The concession charge of $4.60 in Melbourne would also be matched.

Regional commuters who use a Myki Pass to travel between 28 and 365 days a year, will also be capped at the Melbourne rate,

currently $5.52 per day.

Currently, regional commuters can pay up to $46.00 for one-way journeys, dependent on location. A full-fee (non-concession), off-peak fare one way from Shepparton to Southern Cross station is $26.80 currently.

The last fare cut was in 2007, when they were slashed by 20 percent. Following this, V/Line reported a surge in customers using

The Government has also spoke of potentially adding 200 weekend services on regional lines around the state, including five return services on Saturday and Sunday on the Shepparton line and three return services on Saturday and Sunday on the Echuca Line.

Troy Cassar-Daley joins GV Country Music Festival line up

THE GOULBURN Valley Country Music Festival returns to the Shepparton Showgrounds for its second annual show this weekend, bringing with it some of the biggest names in country music.

“I’m really excited and when I saw the line-up with Kasey Chambers there as well as some really good friends like The Wolfe Brothers, I was biting at the bit to get out there and do this gig,” said Troy Cassar-Daley.

“We’re going to make sure we bring the A-Game to the show. I’ve been touring with Ian Moss at the moment, and I think a bit of that Cold Chisel vibe will find its way into the set, because we’ve been playing pretty loud every show.”

Acknowledging the festival’s ‘Local Country Showcase’, that will see local artists Katie Stroud and Timothy Cannon share the stage with the main acts, Troy said, “I always love encouraging the next generation and the ones below them to come through and enjoy this genre of music, but when I hear the good things they’re doing locally like running competitions for musicians,

UNMISSABLE SHOW... The Goulburn Valley Country Music Festival is on this Saturday, April 1. it really puts a spring in their step and I want to say I’m appreciative to be part of a festival that nurtures that too.”

Even more non-musical elements have been added to this years’ festival, including line dancing at 3-4pm and Freestyle Motocross (FMX) displays running at 5pm and 6.10pm.

“I think that’s awesome that we can broaden the whole country music basting, because that makes for a great atmosphere and to me, that’s what these things should be about, it should be about the atmosphere,” said Troy.

Don’t miss him and these great acts in the area for one-night only. You can still purchase tickets to the GV Country Music Festival and find out more at goulburnvalleycountrymusicfestival.com.au

Crossing a line: road maintenance blitz continues

MOTORISTS travelling along the Midland Highway have expressed their frustration after line marking occurred along the highway earlier this year, but not before several large potholes and road resurfacing works took place.

Several places along with highway have had new lines painted over or around potholes and erosion. Some areas of concerns are the intersection of Dhurringile Road/ Midland Hwy, Tatura and Joseph Street/ Midland Hwy, Mooroopna, in front of WB Hunter Park.

VicRoads in responsible for maintaining

the Midland Hwy. A Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson for the Hume District said the line painting works occurred on around 12kms of road and were completed February 1, 2023.

Responding to questions from The Adviser, the spokesperson said, “We’re currently delivering one of the largest and most complex flood recovery programs the state has ever seen, with large-scale, longterm repairs targeting some of our most badly flood-damaged roads, along with our busiest and most productive freight and travel routes.”

“Our maintenance crews regularly assess

the condition of the roads to prioritise works where they’re needed most.”

The Victorian Government has invested more than $780M in maintaining the state’s road under the 2022-23 State Budget. A further $165M was invested in an emergency road repair blitz to repair the widespread damage caused by October’s floods and extreme rainfall. More than 975kms of flood recovery activities have been completed across the state, with a further 120 kilometres of work currently underway. This work ranges from rebuilding and repairing flood-damaged roads through to clearing and cleaning roadsides, drains and culverts.

They said work is underway to rebuild and repair major roads in the area to ensure motorists can keep moving safely, including the Goulburn Valley Freeway, Hume Freeway, Midland Highway and Shepparton Alternative Highway.

Major patching works have since taken place on the Goulburn Valley Freeway between Seymour and Shepparton, after it was forced to close in October last year due to the flooding.

Eco-friendly skies Aviation paving the way for a sustainable future

Youngest Distinguished Global Talent

SUSTAINABILITY is becoming an increasingly critical issue in aviation globally, and Australia is no exception. The current and future scenario of aviation is shaped by several factors, including demand for air travel, technological advancements, government policies and regulations.

The pandemic created significant decline in air travel, which has had a major impact on aviation globally. Despite this, the industry is expected to recover with travel restrictions lifted and demand for travel returning.

There is also increasing pressure on the industry to reduce its carbon footprint, and companies are developing new technologies to make air travel more sustainable, such as electric and hybrid aircraft, biofuels, and sustainable aviation fuels.

Finally, the development of new air travel routes, particularly to Asia and other regions, is also likely to shape aviation in Victoria. The state is well-positioned to take advantage of this growth, with several airports and aerospace companies located in the state, including around Greater Shepparton.

Some specific examples that are being implemented to increase sustainability include:

• Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs): SAFs are an alternative to

traditional fossil fuels, and the aviation industry is exploring their use to reduce its carbon footprint. SAFs are made from sustainable feedstocks like waste fats, oils, and greases. They can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent compared to traditional fossil fuels. Dovetail Electric Aviation of Victoria is one the startups working in this sector.

• Electric and hybrid aircraft: The industry is exploring the use of electric and hybrid aircraft to reduce emissions and make air travel more sustainable.

• Carbon offset programs: Many airlines in Australia are participating in carbon offset programs, which allow them to offset the carbon emissions generated by their flights by investing in renewable energy and sustainability projects.

• Fuel-efficient aircraft: The aviation industry is investing in the development of more fuel-efficient aircraft, which use less fuel and generate fewer emissions.

• Recycling and waste management: Airlines and airports in Australia are implementing programs to reduce waste and recycle materials, such as food and beverage packaging. These are just some of the initiatives and technologies being implemented in Australia. Facing increasing pressure to reduce its impact on the environment, the industry is continually exploring new ways to reduce its impact on the environment. Australia has a role to play in the development of the global

Local author tells women’s stories

CHERYL Phillips is no stranger to telling women’s stories, only weeks ago she officially launched her latest book ‘Heart and Soul of the South Shepparton Community Centre, Stories of Inspirational Women,’ at an open day celebrating the new purpose-built, $4M new facility on Archer Street.

In 2016, Cheryl wrote ‘Salt of the Earth: Inspirational Stories of Mooroopna and Ardmona Women’, which detailed extraordinary tales of surviving wars, the great depression, personal struggles and life in general.

“I would describe myself as a storyteller

rather than a writer,” Cheryl explained.

“I’m passionate about women’s stories from all walks of life. Each story has touched me deeply; there’s stories of trauma and survival, stories of courage, stories of doing whatever it takes to be there for someone or get through a situation and stories of joy, connection, learning and life’s many up and downs.”

It took two years for Cheryl to interview 30 different women for the text, write, edit and publish the anthology.

“When I first put it out there that I was seeking women’s stories at the community centre, there was some reluctance, but as time went on, more and more women came

Tractors, trucks, machinery and planes embark on competitive tractor pull event

PEDAL TO THE METAL..

The Australian Tractor Pull Championships return to the Quambatook Tractor Pull Complex on Easter Saturday, April 8. Photo: Supplied

QUAMBATOOK in the state’s northwest is the proud home of Australia’s only permanent, purpose-built tractor pulling complex. Every year the annual Australian Tractor Pull Championships pulls huge crowds for the spectacular display of machinery, witnessing the brute force behind modified tractors pulling weights down the 100m track.

Pulling commences at 1pm with the vintage tractor pull. From 3.30pm, modified tractors and trucks hit the track to show what they’ve got. At the evening tea break, enthusiasts can share their passion with the pulling teams and enjoy aerobatics by the Paul Bennett Airshows. The action will conclude under lights at approximately 10pm.

Off the track there will be a variety of market stalls, kid’s sideshow entertainment, and food and drink stalls. For those with diesel in their veins, a walk through the modern ‘trucking industry’ with a fleet of trucks on display is a must. Visitors that prefer machinery from yesteryear can explore the history of farming with an extensive display of heritage machinery and equipment courtesy of Qaumbatook Heritage Working Machinery Association.

The Australian Tractor Pull Championships are held at Quambatook Tractor Pull Complex on Easter Saturday, April 8. Follow them on Facebook for up-to-date information. To learn more, phone Tim Betson on 0428 377 342 or Doug Carroll on 0428 510 276.

Egg-citing Easter family fun

HOP on down to KidsTown over the Easter long weekend for some eggscellent family fun!

Held over four days, starting on Good Friday April 7 through to Easter Monday April 10, from 10am until 2pm, there will be wonderful Easter themed activities for the whole family.

There will be exciting orienteering style scavenger hunt courses, which have been redesigned once again by Start Outdoors, plus Easter egg prizes, daily activities and a special appearance by the Easter Bunny!

$5 entry includes an Easter egg surprise, entry to the scavenger hunt, participation in the daily activity, and entry to the KidsTown playground. The train is still closed from the October flood event but plans to restore the track will hopefully begin in the coming months.

On Good Friday there will be face painting

and glitter tattoos. Saturday will see giant bubbles and bouncy balls fill the air. Sunday will be a day for sensory play and craft activities and get up close and personal with native wildlife on the Monday thanks to Bohollow Environmental Education. There’s more planned for the rest of the holidays, be sure to check out the KidsTown website and social media accounts for a list of those activities.

Dig In Café will be open for coffee, refreshments, hot food, ice cream and lunch including the kid’s menu and healthy options.

Throughout the autumn School Holidays, KidsTown Playground will be open dawn till dusk every day, so if you can’t make it to the Easter weekend festivities, you can still enjoy a great day out.

For a full list of the events, please visit www.kidstown.org.au.

Make your home beautiful

BUILDING a new home or decorating your existing abode reflects aesthetic preferences and structural requirements, however the items we choose to adorn our space are what truly make our homes unique to us and an extension of our personalities.

In Shepparton, McKellars Picture Framing and Wall Art offers a unique service where they can help you visualise the perfect piece for your blank space, whether it be a print or a one-of-a-kind commissioned art collection for around the home.

McKellars have partnered with Annie Young from Olive & Oak interior styling to provide a professional in-home design consultancy service. Annie can provide an in-home consultation service where she is able to walk through your home and offer

guidance on what size art will suit a space, how many pieces would be required for your home and what colours would work best.

“A personalised package, crafted to suit your needs and budget, is the ultimate way to ensure the art in your home is perfect for you. In addition to commissioned pieces by local artists, we are able to source most prints and have a large selection already on hand,” Stuart said.

“This is a good time of year to get those items you’ve needed framed sorted, it’s also a good time to look at investing in new art as we are about to spend the many cooler months indoors.”

McKellars Picture Framing and Wall Art are located at 175 Corio Street and can be contacted on 5821 3201.

Caring for your feet will carry you through life

FOR Chris and Chantelle Annett, it has always been their dream to own their own business together.

Chris is an experienced podiatrist, and his wife Chantelle will be assisting in administration now they have opened Future Feet Podiatry in Shepparton.

“I’m really looking forward to providing care to the Shepparton community, welcoming back some long-term clients to the new clinic and meeting new clients as well,” Chris said.

“Unfortunately, the feet can be neglected, and people don’t often present to a podiatrist until they’re impacted by symptoms.

“Maintaining feet care is important for your health and wellbeing and prolonging quality of life. Podiatrists can help with

ingrown nails, bunions, leg and heel pain, assist with injury rehabilitation and many other ailments.”

Chris can help with the feet and lower limbs of all ages, providing assessment, treatment and management of sports injuries, children’s feet, diabetes foot management and feet health assessments.

For your convenience, Future Feet Podiatry is open five days a week, and till late Wednesday and Thursday. Their new, professional and welcoming clinic at 38 Vaughan Street is near the local bus interchange also has plenty of free parking.

Referrals and private health funds are accepted but are not necessary. To book, call (03) 5814 3570 or visit www. futurefeetpodiatry.com.au

Exits ahead of round one

TWO teams in the Goulburn Valley League football and netball competitions have made the decision to withdraw from the 2023 season. They are Tatura U18 football and Benalla 15 & Under netball teams.

The fixture will not be updated. Any team due to play either teams will now have a bye and these games treated as forfeits by Benalla and Tatura.

A GV/L spokesperson said, “AFL GM, the GVL & Netball Victoria will work with both clubs over the season with the hope that both teams will be part of the competition in season 2024. We thank both clubs for their continued efforts and look forward to supporting them, as well as all our clubs through season 2023.”

Round one of the GV/L football and netball season kicks off Easter Weekend, with the first matches to be played on Good Friday.

Harmony cup brings smiles and laughter

B u y i n g y u r f i r s t h o m e is s not t impossible. .

WITH laughter, excitement and raw emotion on display, the All-Abilities Cricket, Harmony Cup was back for its seventh iteration on Wednesday, March 22 at Deakin Reserve.

With the day’s fixture split between competing specialist schools and disability service providers, teams played three rounds each amongst a sporting atmosphere of good-natured fun and joviality.

With teams travelling from as far afield as Cobram, Bendigo, Echuca and Numurkah , the competition was away from its usual home at Princess Park due to the lingering impact of last year’s flooding.

Winning the coveted cup on the day was Cobram and District Specialist School for the school’s division and

Shepparton Access for the disability service providers’ division.

With a host of generous sponsors and run by Shepparton Youth Club United Cricket Club with Valley Sport and Cricket Victoria, organiser Maxine Piggott said,

“The students and participants were really excited about today and got out there and had a bit of a laugh. There were a few people who came up and said, I don’t play cricket but I’m happy to give it a go, and they all just gave it a crack and had a good time.

“All in all, it was a fabulous day made possible by volunteers and supporters. I know everyone had a wonderful day because I saw all the smiles out there on the field.”
