Tales of inspirational women

SOUTH Shepparton Community Centre has found a new home, a purpose-built $4M new facility on Archer Street, Shepparton.

Last Thursday they hosted an open day, which coincided with the launch of a special book, a self-published collection detailing the stories of the wonderful women who make the community centre a buzzing hub of community, friendship and hope.

South Shepparton Community Centre provide social support, adult education, health and wellbeing activities, community services and referrals that meet the diverse needs of groups and individuals in our community.

Within the centre, you’ll find a welcoming and inclusive space for people young and old, from all backgrounds and walks of life. Enjoy events, education programs, courses, food for those in need, encouragement and more as you connect with people from the community.

Councillors, community members and their loved ones gathered last Thursday to congratulate Cheryl Phillips for her wonderful book Heart and Soul of the South Shepparton Community Centre: Stories of Inspirational

Women , an anthology of regular attendee’s varying recollections of how they came to be visitors to the centre.

Tales of arriving in Australia, raising children, navigating a lifetime of relationships, hardships and life's triumphs of the women who contributed to the rich tapestry of the publication is reflective of the community centre’s very essence, the people who make it the incredible place it is.

President of South Shepparton Community Centre Mheganne Lumsden spoke of how the relocation was a significant moment in the group’s history.

“Thank you to everyone who made this move possible. Over the past 37 years, we have had some people at our doorstep who were so broken, so in need of support. It has been beautiful to watch them grow and flourish thanks to having a space that allowed them to do so,” Ms Lumsden said.

South Shepparton Community Centre is now located at 290-300 Archer St, Shepparton. Drop in to purchase a copy of the book. If you’d like to get in touch with the centre, phone 5821 6172 or email administrator@southcom.org.au.

Pitstop is back in action

WE’RE BACK... Hands-on learning and re-engagement program for young people, Pit Stop, is up and running again after having to close in October 2022 due to the DECA building being inundated with floodwater.

Tori May is pictured working on a project.

LOCAL hands-on learning and re-engagement program for young people, Pit Stop, is up and running again after having to close in October 2022 due to the DECA building being inundated with floodwater.

The original premises in Wanganui Rd is still under restoration; however, with support from Pit Stops partner Wodonga Tafe, the program is temporarily operating from an alternative building on the same site.

Pit Stop coordinator Ross is excited to have the program back in action.

‘It's such a popular program, particularly for young people who find working in a typical classroom environment challenging. They can learn new skills here, and we often find they get so engaged in what they're doing that they don't want to leave”, remarked Ross.

The program, an initiative of the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project, caters to individuals and groups from primary

and secondary schools. Students have the opportunity to work on small engines, cars and bikes. Staff have also extended the program to cater for students' interests by introducing new activities such as jewellery making and painting.

The staff's adaptable approach to their work was highlighted during the program's closure, with Ross and fellow staff members Chris Windsor and Mat Golding assisting families impacted by the flood.

“Chris is a qualified mechanic. He assessed 28 flood-damaged cars, nine of which he got back on the road. We also sourced several second-hand cars, including one that was donated, which Lighthouse then gifted to families needing extra support to get back on their feet”, said Ross.

Free insect repellent for Greater Shepparton kindergarteners

GREATER Shepparton Foundation (GSF) has partnered with Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) Wise Well Women and Greater Shepparton City Council to overcome barriers to families taking preventative measures to protect against mosquito-borne disease

Children attending four-year-old kindergarten in 2023 across Greater Shepparton will have access to insect repellent, and in-language information, viewable on the GSF website, to ensure more families in our community have an equal opportunity to keep them informed and safe from mosquito-borne disease.

Over 1,000 kindergarten students will receive the free insect repellent from their centre/service in the coming weeks.

“Following the floods we have seen an increase in mosquito activity and understanding

the long-term impacts of mosquito-borne disease, and the easy ways we can prevent bites is the key to staying safe,” said GSF executive officer Amanda McCulloch.

“Those from our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) communities, who face language and cultural barriers may have not previously had access to this prevention and information like their English-speaking counterparts, so it important this education extends to those cohorts on our community to keep them safe.”

Mosquito-borne diseases spread by mosquitos include Ross River virus, Barmah Forest Virus, Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) and Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus.

Urgent action required for social housing

THE Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Region Wendy Lovell has called on the Andrews Labor Government to invest in social housing for Greater Shepparton.

With published waiting lists for social housing lagging by eight months, current data is yet to reflect the impact of floodaffected communities.

Nevertheless, available data conveys a growing and dire situation with applications mushrooming across the state.

Under the Andrews Labor Government, state-wide lists for new applications have grown by 59 percent reaching a significant 55,043 households by June 2022.

Of even greater concern has been the increase in applications with priority status which has risen by a staggering 208 percent in the past eight years. Priority status is

given to some of Victoria’s most vulnerable people who are homeless, at risk of recurring homelessness, escaping family violence, living with disability or have a special housing need.

With convoluted reporting making it increasingly difficult to calculate the increased demand in Greater Shepparton for social housing, what is clear is that the need far exceeds what is currently available.

With 2,433 applicants listing Shepparton as a preferred location, available data shows that there are only 1,653 properties in the region to meet demand, and with the flood displaced set to inflate those numbers, the situation has become even more grim.

Calling on the Government to release updated statistics, Ms Lovell said, “The Andrews Labor Government is failing

Shepparton’s most vulnerable families who are being forced to sleep rough while the government leaves them to languish over ever-growing waiting lists.

“The only way the social housing shortage in Greater Shepparton can be addressed is for the Government to invest in building a lot more properties in Greater Shepparton.”

Climate Summit

Businesses and community leaders alongside representatives from 5 local councils recently came together as I partnered with Environmental Leadership Australia to host a Climate Leadership and Jobs Summit.

13 leading climate experts spoke to the group across two days to help learn and develop strategies to ensure the region benefits as the world moves to a lower emissions economy.

I’m determined to create relationships between energy experts and local leaders to ensure jobs, profitability and productivity grow in our region long into the future.

Water Buybacks

Last week, Water Minister, Tanya Plibersek, placed on record that the purchase of water will be needed to reach all targets.

However, I strongly believe most of the Murray Darling Basin plan can be completed without more buybacks which will further damage irrigation communities and push up prices of basic food for already struggling Australians.

We can complete the plan over the next two years by investing in water saving projects.

The Albanese Government seems hellbent on meeting a June 2024 deadline by ripping apart regional communities by buying more than 760GL of water. Around $22 billion is produced at the farmgate across the Murray Basin which flows on to create around $80 billion for our regional towns.

We cannot afford to lose this economic driver and i’m demanding the Labor Government start listening to the regions and take buybacks off the table.

Truckie Tax

The National Transport Commission has released options for the next three years regarding increases to Heavy Vehicle Charges.

The options include a potential 10 percent annual increase over three years. Transport companies and producers who carry goods to market are already paying more for fuel as well as operating costs. Businesses cannot afford to cop these price hikes and will have to pass on the costs to consumers.

This is detrimental for Australians who are already struggling with the cost of living and paying more at the checkout. The Goulburn Valley is a transport hub and I’m backing local operators and calling on the Albanese Government to freeze charges for 2023-24 followed by a modest annual increase of 2.27 per cent the following year.

School Visits and Listening Tours

I’ve had the privilege of visiting a number of schools across the region over the past month. It’s been fantastic to meet with students and speak to them about the roles of governments. I’ve also kicked off a year long tour of listening posts. The “Sam on the Street” sessions aim to ensure residents have the opportunity to meet and speak with me in towns across Nicholls. This is also a chance for me to meet with community leaders to stay up to date with projects and issues taking place in towns and how I can help provide assistance.

Recently I visited Girgarre, Tongala, Yarrawonga and Rochester and I’m looking forward to visiting more towns.

‘Battery Man’ with cheque

PAUL

is a humble, local philanthropist who spends hours each week collecting batteries in the Goulburn Valley and beyond, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the children’s ward at GV Health and Give Me 5 For Kids.

In his tireless and tremendous work over the years, Paul, known as the ‘Battery Man’, has contributed around $15,000 of his own money in his venture to raise money for charities but has long required a larger vehicle to cart batteries and to cut down on substantial costs.

“I’m limited with the ute, in a truck I could collect more scrap without having to make several trips. When I go out on the road, I’ll go to somewhere like Finley and collect two tonne and then need to come back to collect what’s left. A new truck would save time, money and fuel.”

To date, Paul has raised $7,000 for a

new truck as donations have trickled in from generous individuals, businesses and community groups via his GoFundMe page and from walk-in donations to his Natrad Shepparton store.

In much deserved recognition of his incredible work over twenty years of giving, the Kiwanis Club of Shepparton Sunrisers proudly presented Paul recently with a $3,000 cheque enabling him to finally purchase his long-coveted truck.

Long time Kiwanis member, Jill Meyers said Paul was perceptively moved in receiving the final instalment for his much-needed vehicle, and the club was delighted to be able to recognize both Paul and his charities in this way.

“It’s all about the kids, for Paul,” Jill said before adding, “And that is Kiwanis primary mission too- in all our fundraising- it is in serving the children.”

Professor Dewar to finish up at La Trobe

OVERSEEING more than a decade of progress and achievement at La Trobe University, vice-chancellor, professor John Dewar AO has announced he will conclude his tenure in January 2024.

La Trobe chancellor, John Brumby AO, said professor Dewar had done an outstanding job leading La Trobe since January 2012 and that he would leave a lasting legacy.

“In a testament to John’s leadership and his standing in the higher education sector, he is one of the longest serving current vice-chancellors at an Australian University,” Mr Brumby said.

“He has built an outstanding leadership team and attracted some of the best teaching and research talent to La Trobe. His staff have delivered significant success, as reflected through numerous indicators.

“These include increasing research income by 149 percent to more than $100 million last year; considerably improving La Trobe’s position in all the major world rankings; further expanding the University’s regional footprint to widen

access to higher education and address workforce need; and attracting more than $100 million in philanthropic funding through La Trobe’s first ever fundraising campaign, Make The Difference.”

Professor Dewar said it had been an incredible privilege to lead La Trobe over the last 11 years.

“I will leave the University with enduring admiration and respect for the passion and determination our people bring to this mission every day,” he said.

“In the meantime, work will continue throughout 2023 on our ambitious forward program, including further development of our University City of the Future; continuing our partnership with CSIRO and government to establish an Australian Food Innovation Centre; strengthening our presence and expanding our course offerings in the regions; and welcoming students back to our campuses in very significant numbers following a tremendously successful enrolment period over the summer.”

EDUCATIONAL IMPACT... La Trobe University vice-chancellor, professor John Dewar AO, announced he will conclude his tenure in January 2024 after 11 years, making him the longest serving current vice-chancellors at an Australian University.

La Trobe University Council will now commence an international recruitment process to appoint the University’s next vice-chancellor.

Personal wisdom brings longevity to teaching

AS a primary school teacher of 40 years, Meredith Hendy has devoted her time to assisting all her students to become the very best they can be.

Having once conquered academic struggles herself, Meredith imbues her own teaching with an understanding of what it takes to overcome challenges to succeed.

“I was a battler myself at school, but I had a strong network of family and friends to support me, without that balance I wouldn’t have learnt other ways to succeed without it all being about the academics.

“When I got into teaching, I suppose, I just wanted to be there for the child, to walk in their shoes and to help them realise that they can achieve, no matter what their

difficulties may be,” Meredith said.

Eager to take on students who, for myriad reasons, don’t easily comply with classroom settings, Meredith said she gets a buzz out of helping kids realise their own self-worth, no matter how bumpy the road or how candid the feedback.

“I take the time to build a relationship of trust with all my students, but I am equally honest, and tough with them so that they can identify their challenges and work forward to overcome them, or work around them. That’s how they feel good about themselves and go on with confidence to learn new skills.

“When my students leave my class, I like to send them off with a strong self-belief that they can take their skills somewhere

A talent for giving

UNWAVERING in her support and multifaceted contribution to the health, wellbeing and education of others, Sujeevika Kumuduni wears many hats.

A qualified Ayurvedic doctor, Sujeevika migrated to Australia with her husband, Dr Prasanna De Abrew in 2012, with the aim of maximising the educational opportunities of their young children.

“Our priority has always been our children’s education, that’s why we migrated to Australia.

“We had a good life, parents and family in Sri Lanka, but we wanted more options for our children,” Sujeevika said.

With Sujveeka’s husband offered a position at GV Health, the family moved to Shepparton in 2013, eventually enrolling their two children at the Goulburn Valley Grammar School.

Hanging up her doctor’s coat, Sujeevika has supported her ‘all-rounder’ daughter, Senithi (Year 8) and highly gifted son, Sasith, to flourish academically.

Achieving an ATAR of 99.6 last year, and with a desk

festooned with academic awards, Sasith is now studying a double degree in engineering and science at Monash University, allowing more time for Sujeevika to focus on her substantial community work.

With a class of children ranging in age, Sujeevika teaches Singhalese every Saturday morning at the Victorian School of Language. With a record eight VCE students this year, Sujeevika is driven to help them achieve the highest possible ATAR.

While considering a return to medicine, Sujeevika currently works as a community health educator for Wise Well Women, a local organisation focused on improving the health literacy environment in the region to support the ethnic community access services and support.

Passionate in her giving role, yet again, Sujeevika said, “Wise Well Women assists and represents a rich, multicultural group. We provide and translate information and organise programs for everyone in the community, building relationships between services and people.”

Under the dump, a botanical garden

IMAGINE a native botanical garden situated on the confluence of two great rivers, offering picturesque walks, themed gardens that honour cultural diversity and provides an arresting landscape to promote art, horticulture and a love of nature.

The Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton (ABGS), located in Kialla is such a place, and was once, inconceivably, a rubbish tip.

With the indominable spirit and drive of community volunteers, later culminating into the Friends of the Australian Botanical Gardens (FABGS), in conjunction with Council appointed committees, the tip was transformed into breath-taking native gardens after a decade of remediation, planning and sheer hard work.

A beacon of sustainable practice and utilising recyclable materials, the gardens today represent the power of community collaboration as well as the realization of an envisaged space generating both an awareness and appreciation of the native environment.

Without town water, electricity and a

whole host of other challenges inherent in the Council site, ABGS advisory committee member Jenny Houlihan said that the difficulties from the start were treated as opportunities rather than hindrances.

“Ten years ago, when the site was allocated for botanical gardens, we necessarily had to see problems as opportunities. We envisioned, during planning, a place that would combine the natural elements of the bush, displaying natives in all their glory as well as attract birds and animals.

“But it has been these challenges which have in a way forced the very uniqueness of the gardens, which draws everyone from bush kinder kids to entertainment groups, artists, naturalists and tourists.

“Once you create a useful and interesting space, people just want to use it.” Jenny said.

If you would like to become a member of FABGS, partaking in working bees, propagation or a whole host of other activities in support of the ABGS, head to www.fabgs. org.au

FEDERAL Member for Nicholls, Sam Birrell, says most of the Murray-Darling Basin plan (MDBP) can be completed without further damaging irrigation communities or pushing up prices for basic foods, but only if the Albanese Government

Victorian and NSW Governments have requested more time to complete water recovery via Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism (SDLAM) projects but Federal Water Minister Tanya Plibersek said at the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council (MinCo) meeting on February 24 that “...delivering the Basin Plan will include the purchase of water so

Mr Birrell said, “Two more years is all that is needed to avoid the negative social and economic buybacks and deliver the plan in full through investment in water saving

“Despite projects delays being caused by the pandemic and floods, irrigation communities are being denied the time to meet water recovery targets in the least harmful way.

“The Albanese Government seems hellbent on meeting a deadline for completion on the Basin Plan that is no longer achievable without the Government purchasing billions of litres of water through buyback, a move that will reduce water available for irrigation, decrease productivity, increase costs for irrigators that remain, and ultimately add significantly to cost of living pressured for Australian families,” he said.

the farmgate with the multiplier in our communities and economy increasing that figure to around $80B.

1 in 3 litres of irrigation water is already diverted to the environment under the MDBP but with an additional 450Gl and making up existing shortfalls, the Government could be looking to purchase over 760Gl in coming years just to meet the June 2024 deadline.

“That is more than half the average amount of irrigation water used in the entire Goulburn Murray Irrigation District over the past four years,” Mr Birrell said.

“It represents 25 percent of the total irrigation water in the southern basin which stretches from the NSW Riverina through Victoria and into the Riverland of South Australia.”

Victorian Water Minister Harriet Shing remains steadfast in her support for SDLAM projects as a means of completing the plan and Mr Birrell says the Federal Government needs to start listening and take buybacks off the table.

“25 percent less water for food and fibre production will put jobs, businesses and towns at risk,” Mr Birrell said.

“The loss of production combined with increased costs for farmers will increase the cost to consumers, cost of living is already the biggest challenge for Australian families, and this will make it infinitely worse.”

The Murray-Darling Basin is responsible for producing around 40 percent of our food and fibre and generates $22B at

“It’s not too late to reconsider and work with basin states to complete the projects they have already committed to and deliver water for the environment without resorting to harmful and inflationary buybacks,” said Mr Birrell.

Leading the way at La Trobe

TODAY, Wednesday, March 8 the world celebrates International Women’s Day, and in recognition of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world, it is also a time to equally acknowledge the contribution of local women in leadership as well.

La Trobe University is one but one of the many fine Victorian institutions that exemplifies the contribution of women in leadership.

All four of La Trobe University’s regional campuses (Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura and Shepparton ) are led by woman with the Pro Vice Chancellor (regional) and Pro Vice Chancellor Health and Innovation (regional) also contributing

to the female team, with many more women in senior leadership roles across the university to boot.

Associate Professor Melanie Bish said the University is strongly committed to gender equality, and more women in senior leadership roles was an important part of moving towards a more equal future.

“We are incredibly proud that across the University – in both academic and professional roles – women are leading the way,” Associate Professor Bish said.

“This International Women’s Day we reflect on the strength and commitment of our female leaders as they work to create new social, economic and cultural codes for a gender equal future.”

Four fresh faces at Kyabram Fauna Park

THE resident mob of kangaroos at Kyabram Fauna Park have welcomed four bonny faces with the birth of two Kangaroo Island Joeys and two Eastern grey joeys.

Kyabram Fauna Park mammal keeper Jessica Lyne said that while three of the new mob-mates are exploring the world outside of mum's pouch, there is still one youngster enjoying a free ride.

"We're thrilled to have two healthy females and one male," Ms Lyne said, before adding, "We haven't been able to identify the sex of the youngest as they are still spending most of their time tucked away in mum's pouch."

Of the two closely related sub-species,

Kangaroo Island joeys tend to reach independence earliest at approximately eight months old, while Eastern grey kangaroos may take slightly longer before making the leap.

Kangaroo Island kangaroos are a relatively small and delicate subspecies, known for their long eyelashes and easy-going temperaments. They can be distinguished from the Eastern grey kangaroos by their red –brown fur.

Kyabram Fauna Park visitors can see the macropods up-close at the Kangaroo Walk-through trail. The large woodland setting allows the kangaroos to comfortably undertake their parenting behaviours.

Celebrating rich diversity in communities

I LOVE travel – mainly because I really enjoy experiencing different cultures to my own. In my opinion, we have so much to learn from other cultures. I’m a regular visitor to Africa and am seen as “family” amongst my friends in Eastern Africa – and my life is the better from what I’ve learned from them.

Speaking of diverse cultures, I reflect on the church of Greater Shepparton – a place of great diversity! Not just ethnicity, but also age demographic, education, wealth levels, vocations, skillsets, ways of seeing things etc. etc. One of the last bastions of genuine community. A community that is a great leveller – no matter what our “status”, in the eyes of God we are all equal. A place where the beggar and the

big boss can sit and worship next to each other as equals!

The book of Acts in the bible chronicles the remarkable growth of Christianity from a prevailing single culture (Jewish) at inception, exploding into a place of a plethora of cultures (from the near east). A true multicultural place for all people – just the way God wants it. A place for you and for me.

GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS ON OUR DOORSTEP

Dear Editor,

In the past Australia has been referred to as the ‘lucky country’. We also used to be a smart country. But our politicians are doing their absolute best to put an end to both descriptions.

Our cost of living keeps rising and there are no decisions being made that are likely to rectify the inflation boom any time soon.

As electricity prices rise, we reduce the amount of electricity being generated by the most cost-effective means, that being with the use of coal. Instead, we export our coal so other nations can enjoy more affordable energy.

We allow oil companies and governments (through taxes) to make billions of dollars from petrol, as the poor motorist watches the price at the pump bounce around from high to very high.

And then there is food, the greatest political con of all.

The World Health Organisation is warning of an ongoing and worsening global food shortage in 2023. Predictably, we too often see the blame being laid at the foot of climate change and the war in Ukraine.

In Australia, we have the capacity to grow enough food to ensure there is sufficient for everyone in our nation, plus ample available for export, especially to nations suffering from shortages.

But what do we do? Our ‘smart’ politicians instead develop policies that continue taking water, the key ingredient in food production, away from our farmers. Such stupidity beggars belief.

When you reduce the supply of food, the natural consequence is an increase in demand and a subsequent increase in cost.

So, my fellow Aussies, as you watch the cost of your weekly supermarket spend steadily rise, please give a thought to the reasons why this is happening. Because one of the key reasons will be politicians pandering to the city ‘green’ vote, rather than protecting everyday Australian families.

In years to come, I am sure future generations will look back on today’s era and shake their heads at the decisionmaking processes under which we are currently living, not to mention their consequences.

One can only hope that tomorrow’s politicians are more interested in supporting Australian families than the ones we have today.

Yours faithfully,

$11,000 for Turkey earthquake relief

“An announcement was made at the mosque during Friday prayer that we would be collecting cash and online donations for Turkey’s recovery. Over 10 days, we raised more than $11,000,” he said.

Albanian Islamic Centre of Shepparton imam, Hysni Merja, said when Albania was hit with a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in 2019, Turkey came out in support of Albania and its people.

“Turkey has a proud history of assisting other countries,” he said, adding that around 4M Albanian people live in Turkey.

G.V. Turkish Islamic Cultural Centre and Mosque president, Serret Doktorogl, welcomed the donation. He said there are around 300 Turkish families in Shepparton.

“It has been a huge disaster. People in the Turkish community here have lost brothers, sisters, and some are still waiting to hear from family members,” he said.

“Buildings are very different in Turkey. They’re made from a lot of brick and concrete. When the quake hit in the middle of the night, there was no time to act before 18 tonnes came down on them.”

“If the Turkish Government says it will rebuild in a year, we trust they will do what they say. It is just money that is needed,” said Serret.

G.V. Turkish Islamic Cultural Centre and Mosque imam Recep Ay thanked the Albanian Society for the generosity.

“Many families have been significantly impacted and many lives have been affected. It is heartening that people have some together in support of Turkey,” said Recep. Donations are still welcome through either the Albanian or Turkish mosques.

OPERATION TRAVEL SAFE VIC

Police have reported that there has been no serious injury collision reported in our region since Operation Travel Safe began on Wednesday, February 22.

“And more importantly, there was no lives lost on our roads,” said Victoria Police acting inspector, Dave Gillespie.

“Of note, Highway Patrol attended a collision in Shepparton on the 22nd of February. The causation of this collision appears to be driver error combined with the presence of alcohol. A brief of evidence will be compiled for a later court date.

“On 26th of February, two males were arrested following a pursuit in the eastern region. Police responded to reports of a vehicle driving erratically in the vicinity of Benalla Road in Shepparton just before 11.30am.

“The vehicle was located on Wyndham Street with the assistance of the Air Wing and was intercepted nearby.

“A 17-year-old from Mooroopna and a 14-yearold from Moe ran on foot from the vehicle but were arrested nearby and are assisting police with their enquiries,” reported Gillespie.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH tohealthdental

SINCE opening Shepparton Dental Spa 12 months ago, Katrina Coote has established her clinic as the go-to for those wishing to improve the look of their smile and boost their confidence.

Katrina and her assistant Renae exude warmth, understanding and a passion for making visitors to the clinic feel at ease, not an easy feat where dental hygiene is concerned.

Restoring their client’s self-esteem is at the heart of what they do, with a fundamental emphasis on caring for people, establishing connections, and building trust with those allow Katrina and Renae to work with them to improve the appearance of their teeth in terms of whiteness.

“One’s smile is so important and just a simple stain removal appointment or a whitening session, that may only lighten the teeth by a few shades, can be imperative to a person's life and confidence level,” said Katrina.

“We have experienced clients who well up with tears when they see their results. They tell us they have never smiled in photos because of the dislike of their teeth. To help create that improved confidence again for our clients is an extremely rewarding process.”

In addition to teeth whitening, the clinic offers dental scaling and cleaning services for all ages, utilising the EMS Air-flow cleaning system, which

employs revolutionary technology to remove harmful bacteria gently, effectively and safely.

“I also am passionate about the fact that everyone should be entitled to an affordable dental experience to keep their mouth as healthy as possible.

FORGING greater justice

BARELY an adult and living with significant disabilities, Tina Powney’s son, Tyron, was sent to prison without any consideration for his complex needs.

As a private counselor working with children and families with special needs, Tina wrote endless letters to organisations to gain support for her son.

Finding zero support for individuals – disproportionately Aboriginal people, like Tyron – with a disability to transition in and out of prison, Tina took matters into her own hands.

Meeting with other parents, listening to harrowing stories about inmates with complex needs, Tina said, “I just got up one day and said, right, I’m going to quit my job and work with 10 families, that was my dream.”

Two years later, Tina is the sole director of the Gallawah Support Services, an Australiawide, independent NDIS support coordination service based in the Goulburn Valley.

With 54 staff, including a team of nurses, social workers and support staff, Gallawah operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day and has pioneered critical support services to fill the gap for inmates with disabilities.

“I realised with my son, that I couldn’t fix the system because there’s no system to fix, but I can develop a system to make sure that my child, my loved one or somebody else’s child would never go through this with no support,” Tina said.

Providing a range of coordinated services for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous NDIS recipients including mentorship, art therapy, support work and specialist services, Tina said Gallawah is a provider committed to assisting its clients to live their very best lives through support.

But it is Gallawah’s deep understanding and lived experience of disability justice that is predominant in Tina’s mind and work.

Recently providing evidence at the Disability Royal Commission in Perth, Tina said she felt ‘blessed’ to be able to present cases of inmates with disability with the impetus to effect change.

“We’re empowering change, giving people hope. It’s giving participants that have been long term in custody or long term in child protection a new door to enter, not just a revolving one.”

Why Gallawah?

MELINDA Brooks is a qualified pathology nurse, harnessing non-invasive HIFU skin tightening treatments with the power of deep Fibroblast ultrasonic waves to inspire women of all ages to take the forward steps they need to look and feel their best.

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) stimulates collagen and elastin in skin utilising deep ultrasonic waves to give skin a lift over the face and neck while tightening and adding contour.

In contrast to surgery, HIFU helps to lift tissue without downtime, pain or any side effects, while ultrasound is also used on mild sagging and mild loose skin.

With so many high-tech devices on the market, with each promising so much, it can be tricky to work out what machines outperform their peers and just how they go about doing that.

“I offer the state-of-the-art HIFU with my trained experience with 11 lines/shots & HIFU pen for the delicate areas around the eyes and mouth “, said Melinda.

“HIFU skips the surface to get deeper, where it can truly effect change in tissue. It targets the SMAS layer, the area where a plastic surgeon pulls during a surgical facelift. The ultrasound device is specifically calibrated so it provides even ultrasonic waves at a very specific temperature, to the right depth to trigger collagen production.

“Approved by TGA, our Spectro 5D HIFU Device with 11 lines/shots is a medical-grade, state-of-the-art device offering a 100 percent non-invasive treatment together with the HIFU pen for the delicate areas around the eyes and mouth. In addition, HIFU is equally efficient for permanent fat reduction from the lower chin and neck area”.

CONTRIBUTING THROUGH exceptional CUSTOMER CARE

THE exceptional team at Reid’s Pharmacy exemplify the very best in customer care and service.

Welcoming Emily Argus to the all-female staff in February, the new pharmacist has effortlessly joined the team which highly values getting to know each of their customers in order to maximise the best health outcomes.

Returning to work after the birth of her nine-month-old son Harrison, Emily is an experienced professional who actively sought to work at Reid’s because of its unmistakable focus on customer care as well as its friendly and supportive work environment.

“When I was returning to work, I knew what sort of environment I wanted to work in. I’ve known about Reid’s for a long time, and I thought that’s the kind of supportive and professional workplace I want to be a part of. So, I literally walked in one day and asked if there were any jobs available.

“I knew the values here would resonate with me and I thought, if I’m going to be

Currently working two days a week, Emily is also studying her pharmacy accreditation, which will enable her to parallel pharmacists Leticia and Kate in delivering home medication reviews, just one of the many ways the staff pushes forward for optimal patient care.

In pinpointing the staff’s overriding approach to customer service, Emily said, “If you ran into a friend down the street, you’d have the same sort of conversations with staff here, it’s natural, and it feels comfortable.”

FOLLOWING almost 30 years of running her own successful beauty salon and training school, which provided a wealth of opportunities to many local women, Kim O’Keeffe has had a career change. Kim spoke of how her path to parliament was paved and her hopes for fellow women in our region.

“I was so fortunate to work in an industry that I loved and I will always look back on those years with such pride and so many wonderful memories”, said Kim.

“In 2016 I decided to run for Local Government. I could see that the Council needed some new blood and I felt I had a lot to offer. I wanted to contribute and to give back to the community that had supported me. I was already supporting the community with some fundraising events and volunteering.

“I wanted to see change and progress in the Council. I did question whether I was the right fit and if I had the skills, knowledge and experience to do the job well. What I did know is that I had the passion and commitment, and the timing for change was right. I was also looking into the future unsure of what was next. I took a leap of faith going to the Council election and stepping completely out of my comfort zone.

“As we know I was elected, and my next life journey began. I was first elected out of 29 candidates which was a huge surprise. I

went in as Deputy Mayor and had the honour of being elected Mayor four times. Being the Mayor was the most incredible experience. It was a busy role and I loved each and every day I was in the Mayoral position. When you are in a position where you can work for your community and make a difference, you have to embrace those opportunities and step up. I was elected again in 2020 and then successfully elected into State Parliament last November as the Nationals Member for the Shepparton District. It was a natural progression and it has given me the opportunity to continue to work hard and to serve my community and the region at a whole new level, which is incredibly exciting.

“State Politics will be another big learning and I am embracing the role and the opportunity. I am really happy that our National Party team consists of six women and five men and I will strive to attract more women to all levels of politics. When Jeanette Powell was elected as the first woman for the National Party in Victoria, she was the only woman in the party at the time. It is great to see how things have changed. Let us hope that change continues with more women being elected at all levels of government.

“There is a lot of work to be done I will be advocating for the many needs of our region and continuing to work with the

other tiers of government and others. I was really fortunate to already have had almost six years in Local Government and many strong and positive relationships with many MPs across the board.

“It is such a privilege and honour to have been elected, and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity, and I am determined to represent the region well. I am so happy in the role and I will continue to work hard, embrace opportunities, and to serve the community the best way I can.

“I never expected my career to have ended up where it has, and that is a good message to send out to others. Life is a journey and if we open our eyes a bit wider, you never know, you might encounter something that sparks your interest for a variety of reasons, or have an opportunity come your way that

may not be what you thought you were capable of or it be what you were looking for.

“Only you can make it happen. Don’t over think it as it's easy to talk ourselves out of things. Also, by stepping out of our comfort zone and challenging ourselves, it can be really rewarding and exciting.

“I will continue to strive to lead by example and hopefully be a role model and mentor to other women. Support and encourage each other. I also want to ensure that we all get the same opportunities to progress through life.

“When I look back at my younger self, I'm proud of how far I have come. My first job was at KFC at 14, which led into full time retail at 15, then into the beauty industry at 21 and owning my own business by 25. I am now a state politician, a role I am immensely proud of”, said Kim.

FOLLOWING on from a fabulous two years at their new location, Shepparton Skin and Body owner and beauty therapist Chelsea Harbor and her team have proudly been named as a Platinum clinic by internationally renowned skincare powerhouse, Germaine De Capuccini.

Spain and Italy’s number one selling professional skincare was established in 1964 and is now sold in 20,000 Clinics/Spas across 84 countries, including Shepparton Skin and Body.

In 2021 the clinic was awarded Gold status, placing them in coveted the top six of all Germaine De Capuccini stockists across Australasia. In 2022, they were included in the top four, an amazing feat which will see them visit the brand’s laboratories, top clinic and factory located in Spain this September, a trip they were awarded along with the status of Platinum. Their success is a testament to

their love of the brand, and how well it works for their clients.

“We adore Germaine De Capuccini products, and so do our clients. They are simply beautiful and luxurious to work with, but more importantly, the results they deliver are unsurpassed in terms of clinical skincare. We love that Germaine De Capuccini is consistently a step ahead of the game in their research and technologies,” said Chelsea.

“We are so excited to be able to travel to Spain and have an inside look at how they develop, manufacture, and utilise their products in their own settings.”

To book in for a treatment, or purchase from the Germaine De Capuccini range, visit Shepparton Skin & Body at 115 Wyndham Street (just up from Higgins Bakery), visit www.sheppartonskinandbody.com. au or give them a call on 5821 0271.

CUSTOMER SERVICE TO HOLD ON TO

WHEN you’ve been in business for 34 years and your staff have clocked up an average of 24 years of dedicated service between them, you know you’ve got something special.

Anne Finn and her all female staff at Finny’s Manchester in the heart of Shepparton, quite simply love coming to work each day.

Sharing a fun-loving, flexible and supportive camaraderie, the staff are committed to providing each customer with the best, personalised service, a point of difference that flows indicatively from the thriving team.

“We all just fit in, everyone gets along so well with each other, it makes it easy to come to work and have fun,” said Anne’s daughter, Tina who has worked alongside her mother since the store began.

“I think that for the staff to get on so well and enjoy each other's company is the most important part of having a successful

business; we look after each other so we can focus on our customers,” Anne said.

Renowned for its huge sales, which once had customers lining up out the door and around the corner, Finny’s prides itself on catering to the needs of everyone; with quality products meeting all budgets.

With Tara, Shirley, and Darielle all bringing their own unique qualities and skills to the team, Anne and Tina are effusive about their dedication, customer service and flexibility to support one another, no matter the challenge.

Appreciating and enjoying the conversations and relationships she has fostered with customers over the years, Anne said, “It’s very important for us, and for the people who come in as well, that we take the time to chat and listen, you get to hear a lot of stories, we really value that.”

Motors running FOR INAUGURAL MOVE RALLY

The fourth generation Ford Thunderbird assembled in the Wixom, Michigan plant in the USA was built to appeal to white collar executives at a price point of $6,800 USD. Compared with the lighter Mustang, which was targeted at a younger market and cost only $2,600 USD.

Peter Hill, executive officer of the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) bought his T-Bird around 18 months ago and it has been in Australia for the past 15 years. It has never been repainted or restored, having been initially purchased by a new car dealer in Illinois who parked it in his showroom as a drawcard for 20 years.

It was then sold to its second owner who rather than drive it, trailered it across the

USA, winning award after award for best in class.

Peter’s 1965 Ford T-Bird will hit the road in April for the inaugural Melbourne to MOVE car rally. A procession of rare, collectible and historically significant vehicles will travel from CMV Truck and Bus in Derimut. The cavalcade will travel north through small towns and great driving roads on the way to Nagambie for lunch and then onto Shepparton for the Finish Line Festival at MOVE.

“We want to create an iconic Aussie car rally for the Goulburn Valley like the Bay to Birdwood, which sees 1,200 people annually. It’s a one-day-only festival where all people are invited to stay and explore our region,” said Peter.

MOVE will provide manned, secure parking for vehicles overnight as part of their entry fee.

Limited places are still available for those who wish to take part. Entry includes lunch in Nagambie, dinner at MOVE, and full access to the museum and the Finish Line Festival. The festival will include the run cars on display, live music, food trucks, local wine and produce, and heaps more.

There will be an overall ‘People's Choice Award’ where entrants as well as visitors will vote for their favourite machine.
