WITH a growing number of shopfronts including stylish boutiques, clothing and shoe stores for men, women and children, as well as jewellers, hobby stores and more, the Maude Street redevelopment has become a hive of activity since being officially opened

ahead of Christmas.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to see the strip between Fryers and High Streets being busy again,” remarked Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry board member, Geoff Adams.

“The parking is easy for shoppers, and

with slow moving traffic, it’s a safe place to shop.”

The Chamber drove the $17.15M redevelopment of the former mall precinct, eager to see Maude Street teeming with shoppers and transformed for local hospitality and retail traders. Continued Page 4

Incoming support for those with disabilities

FROM January 1, 2023, Greater Shepparton will have a new provider of the Home and Community Care Program for Young People (HACC-PYP).

The outgoing provider, Nexus Primary Health, worked closely with MHA Care and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing through 2022 to ensure a smooth transition from Nexus to

“The goal of both service providers and DFFH was to ensure that HACCPYP services continued to be offered and supported in the City of Greater Shepparton area. This included transitioning existing Nexus clients across to MHA Care. In recent months MHA Care has been contacting those clients and working with them to reassess their individual needs and review and update the services they receive,” said CEO of MHA

Care, Michael Hogan.

MHA Care has provided HACC services in the Moira Shire for 20 years.

This program provides basic support and maintenance services to help people under 65 years of age (or under 50 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) with disability, and their unpaid carers, to remain living at home as independently as possible. The program is funded and managed by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.

Nexus Primary Health would like to thank the community and clients for their support over the past three years of providing services to the City of Greater Shepparton.

For further information or enquiries on the HACC-PYP program, contact MHA Care via email intake@mhacare.org.au or ring 5742 1111 and select option 1.

The tools to succeed

IN SUPPORT of young apprentices in the community, the Rev ‘n’ Rec Club decided to generously award a gift voucher to assist them in their career.

Club members, who meet at Harston Hall, voted to award a Total Tools gift voucher valued at $500 to one apprentice drawn from a list of 28 names that were put forward by GOTAFE.

Mason Springs, an apprentice that works for Dan Harris Mechanical Repairs in Katunga, 45km north of Shepparton, was the lucky

recipient drawn at the club’s December 3 meeting.

Mason was presented with his generous voucher by Rec ‘n’ Rev president, Fred Camilleri on Wednesday, December 7.

Affordable housing makes agenda for final Council sitting

FOR the last time this year, Greater Shepparton City Council has met for its ordinary meeting on Tuesday, December 20.

At the meeting, Council resolved to lease land at 20-22 Perrivale Drive to Kids Under Cover, following community consultation, to facilitate a Village 21 development.

Village 21 is an innovative model which seeks to assist at-risk youth to successfully transition to independent living from out of home care. Once constructed, the development will accommodate three twobedroom studios for affordable housing and two one-bedroom studios for live-in mentors.

“Council agreed that social housing is a community need and was able to identify land suitable for future development,” said mayor Cr Shane Sali, acknowledging the

need for appropriate housing for at-risk young people in the region.

Kids Under Cover is a non-profit focused on delivering the unique combination of studio accommodation and education scholarships as a practical and proven strategy in preventing youth homelessness.

Following Council’s decision, Kids Under Cover will be seeking project funding and will commence the planning process through the state government before commencing any development. This planning process is subject to further community consultation and will be overseen by the Victorian Government.

Further information on the lease of land can be found online at Council’s Shaping Greater Shepp website: shaping.greatershepparton.com.au/ lease-land-perrivale-drive.

Maude Street makeover a big success

CHAMBER president, John Anderson, said that the redevelopment has already shown great success for both shoppers and businesses since being opened.

“Simply putting a slow-moving traffic lane through and some carparks has given life back to the precinct, but also, it’s still very much a pedestrian area. We’ve got so many places where people can sit and watch the world go by.

“The shops are all open and they’re trading well after a very tough two years and now in fact, we’ve got new businesses that have come and opened.

“Over time, I think the heart will develop as people are coming back in here, both day and night. I’m also really pleased that it is such a safe place to come to at night now,” said Mr Anderson.

The redevelopment includes modern street furniture,

shelters with solar panels, CCTV cameras, audio, lighting, a new playground in addition to one-way, slow-moving traffic.

Parking in the CBD, including along Maude Street is timed but complimentary until February 1.

Support local traders this Boxing Day and holiday period by exploring new and familiar businesses in Maude Street, many of which have sales on now. Continuing to support local businesses will only encourage our region to thrive.

The people have made their choice at SAM

THE Bankstown Koori Elders Group have won the prestigious People’s Choice Award in the 2022 Indigenous Ceramic Award (ICA).

With the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) extending its full and hearty congratulations to the group, the Bankstown Koori Elders Group garnered over 20 percent of the popular vote, sharing $1,500 in prize money.

The winning artwork, titled Waterhole of Kinship (2020), is a large circular work consisting of several individual ceramic tiles pieced together and is reminiscent of the cracked earth found in creek beds during drought.

Each tile is decorated with its own unique pattern; the collaborative nature of the work acknowledges how individual experiences

and cultural knowledge intermingle, like water flowing through creeks and rivers to form pools of water.

In their artist statement, the group dedicated the work to new generations of First Nations People in the hope that they will remain connected to Country and carry a deep love and respect for all living things.

The winning Bankstown Koori Elders Group consists of Lorna Morgan (WakaWaka, Darumbal), Lillian Johnson (WakaWaka, Gubbi Gubbi), Gloria Peronchik (Waka-Waka, Gangulu), Beverley Gilmartin (Wiradjuri), Victoria Woods (Wiradjuri), Margaret Foat (Buandik) Lola Simmons (Wailwan) and John Simmons.

Push for important infrastructure projects

SPEAKING on the final sitting day of 2022 and the first sitting day of the 60th State Parliament, the Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Region Wendy Lovell called on the Andrews Labor Government to commit its share of funding towards Stage 1 of the Shepparton Bypass Project, as well as the redevelopment of the Shepparton Sports Stadium.

In her contribution on the bypass project, Ms Lovell said the recent flood crisis that saw Mooroopna isolated for days proved the urgent necessity of a second river crossing between Shepparton and Mooroopna.

Ms Lovell said the Liberal Nationals Coalition made a pre-election funding commitment of $260M, being the State Government’s share of Stage 1 of the project and she called on Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan to immediately match this commitment to get the project started.

Similarly, Ms Lovell highlighted the Liberal Nationals Coalition’s preelection pledge to provide $20M to the redevelopment of the Shepparton Sports Stadium, a job-creating project that will transform the stadium into the world-class Shepparton Sports & Events Centre.

Ms Lovell called on Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence to match this funding commitment to help make the project a reality.

Council resolved to lease the land at 20-22 Perrivale Drive, Shepparton to Kids Under Cover, following a community consultation process, to facilitate a Village 21 development.

The development will accommodate three two-bedroom studios for Affordable Housing and two one-bedroom studios for live-in mentors. Kids Under Cover is a not-for-profit organisation focused on delivering studio accommodation and education scholarships as a practical and proven strategy in preventing youth homelessness.

Multicultural Action Plan for Greater Shepparton

Council noted the success made in the third year of the Greater Shepparton Multicultural Strategy 2019-2022 and voted to adopt a three year Multicultural Action Plan moving forward.

The new Strategy will be supported by an Annual Implementation Plan with clear actions and deliverables that respond to community needs. The Mayor will also acknowledge culturally significant festivals observed by communities in Greater Shepparton and issue a greeting message on the festival day.

The recent floods highlighted the necessity to rebuild the stadium when the facility could not be used as a recovery centre due to the roof leaking in multiple areas and the facility being built below current flood levels.

The opening of the 60th State Parliament saw Ms Lovell elected Deputy President of the Legislative Council for a second consecutive term. Ms Lovell said she was honoured to once again be elected as the Deputy President of the Legislative Council and was looking forward to working with her colleagues to best represent constituents.

Sam BIRRELL MP

I hope your holidays are being spent with loved ones and you are able to reflect on the year that has been passed. I know it can be a hard time for some people and my thoughts are with you. 2022 has had its ups and downs in our region, with recent wet weather and flooding testing our communities. However, in the good and bad times we see the best come out in our communities. I applaud you all for your generosity, your strength in the face of adversity, and your spirit and willingness to help others in need. It has been an honour and a privilege to have been elected as your Federal Member and I have tried not to waste a moment or miss an opportunity to engage with the people of Nicholls or to put the case for support, services and infrastructure communities want. I look forward to meeting with many of you in 2023 and continuing to advocate for Nicholls.

Minister Visit

Last week I had the opportunity to update the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, about the needs of our region following the floods. I toured the Minister through Shepparton, Mooroopna, Murchison and Nagambie and spoke with community leaders about how their communities are rebuilding and what they need to build back stronger.

Telecommunications

The Albanese Government is continuing to divide us from the city and has scrapped millions of dollars’ worth of telecommunications funding for regional and rural areas. Black spots and connectivity are common issues presented to me by constituents. However, Labor’s recent budget has cut $106 million dollars to natural disaster resilience and telecommunications infrastructure in vulnerable location programs. $30 million funded under the Coalition for various internet affordability measures in the regions is now just $4.7 million. The Mobile Blackspot Funding has also been reduced by $37.5 million.

The Voice

A wide range of views from across the electorate have been expressed to me regarding constitutional change and The Voice to Parliament. Any change to the Australian Constitution must be taken seriously. The Albanese Government must provide more detail for all Australians to make an informed decision. I continue to meet and listen to the community on this important issue. Stay up to

Stay safe and alert this holiday season

continued from front page

THIS year so far, 237 families will be missing someone from their gatherings and every death on our roads is one too many.

Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, SES and CFA alongside GMCU, Triple M and The Adviser wish to remind our community to stay vigilant, alert and take a break to help stay awake while driving on our roads.

“We urge everyone to be patient and take a break on long drives to ensure they’re alert and driving safely,” said Shepparton Police senior constable, Trent Marks.

“Speeding, being distracted while driving and driving under the influence are all factors which contribute to the road toll, and they are all avoidable. Resist the temptation to pick up your phone and plan your journey ahead of time to minimise distractions.”

We urge everyone to be patient and take a break on long drives to ensure they’re alert and driving safely,

Shepparton Police senior constable, Trent Marks.

Ambulance Victoria paramedic, Adrian Pensak also had some advice around other ways to stay safe.

“In addition to road safety, this time of year is also peak time for water incidents, injuries resulting from intoxication and even household accidents. Please be mindful in and around water, while celebrating and even around your home to ensure you safely enjoy the holiday season,” said Mr Pensak.

The Fire Danger Period (FDP) for the North East CFA Region has now commenced. Despite flooding weeks ago, the community should still be vigilant about fire risk this season.

“This year the new Australian Fire

Danger Rating System was introduced, we urge everyone to take a few moments to familiarise themselves with this as it will help you decide what actions to take to protect yourselves from bushfires and grass fires this summer and incorporate it into your fire safety plan,” said Tallygaroopna Country Fire Authority member, Adrian Moule.

GMCU Shepparton branch manager Dallas Moore

GMCU Shepparton branch manager Dallas Moore would like to take the opportunity to thank all emergency services personnel for their tireless service to our community.

“We are proud to be involved in raising awareness for road safety each holiday season and we thank our emergency services for the work that they do yearround to help keep us safe. Let’s work together to ease the pressure on them this holiday season by being accountable for our own safety on the roads and while celebrating to ensure we all get to our destinations and have the opportunity to spend invaluable time with our friends and family.”

Remember that locals die on local roads, it’s just as important to take care when travelling short distances as well as on long journeys. Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, SES and CFA alongside GMCU, Triple M and The Adviser wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year.

First year of results are off to a flying start at GSSC

THE Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) is pleased to announce that it has made across-the-board improvement in its senior student outcomes following its first year of combined operations.

Senior students of GSSC, which opened as a single campus at Hawdon Street in January, delivered improved results as individuals and as a graduating class with higher median subject scores than for the previous year.

Further, positive (early) data has also shown:

• The highest ATAR above 90, improving upon 2021 results

• A higher number of students with an ATAR between 80 and 90, improving upon 2021 results

• Greatly improved 2022 study scores in individual subject areas compared to 2021

• The likelihood of more students this year pursuing their preferred post-secondary study choice

Welcoming the encouraging results, executive principal Barbara O’Brien said, “We’re thrilled that in our first year of

operation, with all the challenges that major change brings, we were able to deliver improvements in our VCE results and maintain a high rate of completion for our VCAL students.”

Additionally, the GSSC’s Careers Team has also won a state-wide award for excellence, with more students likely to receive their preferred post-secondary study choices than in the last two years, due to proactive and targeted counselling of students at risk of not receiving their first preference by dedicated careers practitioners.

A partnership for success

MADDY Tracy is an extraordinary young woman, full of self-composure and passion for her sport.

An equestrian since the age of eight, Maddy has won a plethora of awards in different breed groups in pony shows across Victoria including a first (led) and second (child’s mount) at the Victorian Agricultural Society (VAS) as well as a second at the Canberra Royal.

With a swag of supreme titles under her belt as well, Maddy has set her sights on a win when she returns to next year's Canberra Royal in February with her exquisite and muchloved pony, Birchwood Enchantress, or Ivy, as she is more affectionately known.

When asked what she hoped to achieve in Canberra, the ever-graceful Maddy said, “I would love to at least win a first and if I win a first maybe a championship too, but also a win for me is more about being happy with how Ivy’s gone, if she’s behaved and is, well, perfect.”

The partnership between Maddy and Ivy is a credit to both, and is evidence of much hard work, training and trust resulting in a sporting prowess that is both breathtaking and elegant to watch.

As with all sporting achievement, however, the recipe for Maddy and Ivy’s success comes with a full itinerary of skill development and practice as Maddy said, “In the lead up to a big competition, I get a few extra lessons beforehand to make sure everything is perfect.

“I ride two to three times a week at least and if I’m not riding, I do lunging with Ivy for extra exercise.”

Community sport can change lives, your support helps

A FEW decades ago, a young man emerged with an alternative to what was being offered to those seeking solace from the ‘dark side’.

That young man was Peter Cullen AM –founder of Reclink, and the alternative he offered – to addiction of any kind – was playing community sport.

Specifically, kicking an Aussie Rules football around.

“…for all its popularity, cultural significance and media coverage, the most impactful role of footy is largely hidden from view. This role is Reclink footy – footy for people experiencing social disadvantage,” Peter said.

As a national non-profit, Reclink Australia provides evidence-based community sport, art and sports recreation programs to disadvantaged Australians to create socially inclusive, life-changing opportunities.

The Power of a Football is a riveting collection of over 30 personal stories from all

walks of life in the 30 years of Reclink footy.

The big names, the unsung heroes and everyone in between – from the early days of its grassroots in St Kilda, to the football league it is today around Australia.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “… full of stories of redemption, hope, pushing doors open for people and bringing out the very finest qualities of our communities. Put them together and they are a force for good. I see in them the very best of us. As you read the stories in this book, I’m confident you’ll see the same.”

Throughout these stories are recurrent themes of passion, inspiration, confidence and the transformative nature of connection and purpose which AFL football provides.

Published by WestWords Books, you can purchase The Power of a Football for $39.95 from reclink.org/book

If a horse is a mirror to the rider’s soul, then it is not hard to see why the partnership between Maddy and Ivy is such a successful one because not only do they share an intuitive understanding of each other they also exude a gentle dignity which perfectly complements their steely determination to succeed.
