WE ARE 100 PERCENT ABOUT SECURITY AND TRUST... Celebrating 20 years of providing cutting edge security solutions across regional Victoria and New South Wales, Mark and Vicki Liversidge lead a talented and highly skilled team of security technicians and administrative staff ensuring the highest levels of customer

clients and their property safe

TRUST is something earned over time, is built with consistency and is words met with action.

Celebrating 20 years of servicing Victoria and beyond in providing tailor-made security solutions to both residential, commercial and industrial clients, Mark and Vicki Liversidge know the vital role that trust plays when clients come to them.

As managing director, Mark stated, “It’s you that clients are really buying when they need security solutions for their property. You can show customers a product and explain to them how it works but really, they’re putting their trust in you. They’re banking on your experience.”

Along with integrating security systems and providing technical solutions to problems in the field, staying ahead of technological innovation is another feature that provides Insight Protection Solutions with its edge in the market, said Mark. With an average shelf life of two to three years, knowing state-of-the-products and gaining manufacturer accreditation on those products is a

must.

“New technology comes mainly through industry groups,” said Mark, having recently returned from the Security Exhibition & Conference in Sydney.

“It is here that manufacturers get together and showcase their latest products. We normally come away from these conventions with three or four really good ideas and we aim to implement these in our business over the next 12 months before the next convention.”

With 20 years of innovation implementation, ongoing training and respect for the importance of trust, Mark and Vicki Liversidge attribute their success and business growth to word of mouth based on providing consistent and excellent service.

“We strive for excellence,” said Mark, “We have always aimed to provide the best possible service, and that’s where your word of mouth and business growth comes from.”

about security

MANAGING director of Insight Protection Solutions, Mark Liversidge lives and breathes security.

Aside from holding a deep fascination and professional grasp of innovative and technological advancements in security products, Mark has spent most of his life in the security industry providing excellence in security solutions for large and small clients alike.

Beginning his apprenticeship as a locksmith in Moorabbin at the age of 17, he soon returned to Shepparton where he started the business Integra Locksmith Service with partners Dino and Len Di Bella.

But it wasn’t until Mark saw new swipe

card technology for the first time, that he was blown away by the significance of high-tech advancements for security systems, as Mark stated,“Once I saw my first electronic access controller and access system I was sold. “Following his moment of revelation, Mark undertook training in electronics and became a security technician at ASDIC Security Industries while continuing to build the locksmith business at the same time.

With ASDIC eventually being sold to Chubb Security, Mark continued to develop his professional and technical prowess, later becoming NSW regional manager, and then state manager in Tasmania.

In 2002, Mark and his wife Vicki began Insight

Ensuring the next generation in quality, security expertise

WITH a diverse work history, Vicki Liversidge and her husband Mark began their business, Insight Protection Solutions, in October 2002.

With five children, and a burgeoning business to her credit, Vicki is the security company's hardworking and vivacious office manager. With three upcoming and capable apprentices, Vicki is keen to ensure that the trainees understand the significance of trust that is bestowed upon them

in their role.

Overwhelmingly, however, Vicki is invigorated by the vitality that her young employees bring to the business, as she stated, “With all the young ones coming through, they breathe life into the business. You are training the next generation of technicians which is exciting, and they bring technical edge as well.”

Travis Heeney, GOTAFE CEO said, “The EMERGE event is a chance for the community to reconnect and enjoy a relaxing afternoon together.”

“The Goulburn Valley has experienced unprecedented challenges over the last few years, from Covid to the recent flooding. We want to do something to lift spirits and give back to our community.”

The Cat Empire will be supported by local artists JB & Me, Bricky B, Tenielle McKenzie and Drmngnow.

Neil Morris is a proud Yorta Yorta rapper, dancer, artist and actor and performs under the name Drmngnow. He is one of four local artists that will perform

Neil was personally impacted by the floods when his music studio in Mooroopna was inundated by flood water, and it is currently undergoing works to repair the damage.

“I think there is a real fragility to human nature in times of natural disasters like a flood. Seeing that fragility shows us how connected we are as people and how we can all move together, to live together in the best possible way in the community,” he said.

“Everyone is welcome, bring your friends and family along for a fun day out,” added Mr Heeney.

POLICE APPEAL

SHEPPARTON Volume Crime Unit investigators are appealing for public assistance after over $10K worth of equipment was stolen from a house in Maude Street on Saturday, November 19.

Undergoing renovations at the time, it is understood that the house was entered between 3am – 5am by three male offenders.

Returning to the house three times over the two-hour period, the offenders stole power tools, painting equipment and a safe which belonged to the tradesmen who were working on the property.

If anyone in the community has any information in relation to this matter, you are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at https://bit.ly/3H0pWry

Bridges reopen to traffic

WATTS Road bridge reopened on Monday, December 5, allowing traffic under three tonnes to use the ‘back way’ between Mooroopna and Kialla as an alternative to the Midland Highway.

Since flood waters receded from Watt Road, Greater Shepparton City Council staff and bridge engineers have been working on cleaning up debris and inspecting the bridge for structural damage.

The surface of the road approaching the bridge on either side have been repaired and the bridge deemed suitable for light vehicles only. Any vehicle of three tonnes or more must not use the bridge as it may compromise the structure and create a safety issue for other vehicles.

Greater Shepparton City Council director of infrastructure, Gary Randhawa, said under no circumstances should vehicles three tonne

and over attempt to cross over the bridge.

“The bridge has been assessed as safe for vehicles under three tonne and we ask that drivers are considerate and think about their own safety plus that of other bridge users.”

“In the past, despite the signage and height restrictions, heavy vehicles have used the bridge and caused damage to the infrastructure which means closing the bridge for repairs. We do not want to be in that situation with Watt Road carrying around 5,500 vehicles a day,” he said.

Raftery Road bridge is reopened and safe for use. Toolamba bridge is still being cleaned up and assessed. Council anticipates Toolamba bridge to be open later this week, with further updates to come.

Young apprentice wins gold

FROM a very young age, Jack Bird was always had a tool in his hand, crafting his ware with whatever material he could find. Utilising wood, wire or the occasional motor, Jack would happily construct, rebuild and repair.

Now at the age of 16, Jack is a first-year apprentice excelling in his Certificate lll in Engineering, Mechanical and has just won this year’s Regional WorldSkills gold medal in Wodonga for turning, beating third and fourthyear apprentices in the process.

A coveted competition, usually the domain of older apprentices, Jack’s GOTAFE teacher, John Farrow saw something special in Jack’s rapidly advancing skills and nominated him for the challenge.

Also recognising his young apprentice’s drive, passion and talent, owner of GV Engineerinng Works, Trevor Seccull said, “Jack is a thinker, he’s very motivated and he takes a lot of pride

in his work. I knew he would do well in the competition because in a short time, he’s already done the work of a third or fourth year.”

Stating that Jack was the talk of the competition, being the youngest competitor and winning the gold medal, Trevor’s wife, Liz said, “Jack has picked things up very quickly and he has more than proven his weight in gold. He is very mature for his age.”

Grateful to both Trevor, Liz and his mentor on the floor, Neil Swainston for the opportunity to be apprenticed to GV Engineering, Jack said, “Working here is enjoyable, I obviously love the trade and I’ve learnt many skills.”

With aspirations to one day run his ‘own show’, Jack already has his eye on the Worldskills Australia, National championships in Melbourne next year and beyond that, he may even be on his way to Paris in 2024 for the international titles.

Outdoor pools set to open

SWIMMERS can look forward to a summer of splashing with rural outdoor pools in Mooroopna, Merrigum and Tatura having opened last Saturday.

Council is also offering an all new Summer Family Pool Membership with access to all three rural pools, plus the indoor and outdoor pools and Splash Park (once re-opened) at Aquamoves. The membership is available for $295 and can be used by a group of five people over a period of five months. Terms and conditions apply with the option to add more people to the membership at an additional cost.

The rural outdoor pools will remain open until the second weekend in March, with the final day of the outdoor pool season being Sunday, March 12, 2023.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s manager of active living, David Booth says time spent at the outdoor pools over summer is a much loved tradition for many families and individuals in Greater Shepparton.

“Cherished childhood memories are made at the local outdoor pools over summer, with families and friends making the most of the opportunity to connect and enjoy one another’s company. We are lucky to have such great facilities in our rural towns”, Mr Booth said.

With the indoor and outdoor pools at Aquamoves still some weeks away from re-opening due to damage from the recent flood, the seasonal rural pools provide the ideal alternative.

“I encourage people in our small towns, as well as those in Shepparton to make the most of these important community facilities. Whether you want to do some laps or just have fun, including taking the family out to the Merrigum Splash Park, the pools provide a safe family environment for a refreshing cool off,” Mr Booth said.

For more information about the Summer Family Pool Membership, other access options and the pool opening hours, visit www.aquamoves. com.au/ruralpools.

Changes are coming for kerbside bin collection

IN PREPARATION FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF THE PURPLE LID BIN, KIALLA AND TATURA WILL SEE CHANGES IN EXISTING PICKUPS...

In March 2023, red lid bins will be picked up fortnightly and green lid bins weekly in a trial by Council to minimize contamination ahead of the introduction of the purple lid bin in early 2024. Photo: Supplied

IN accordance with the introduction of the State Government’s Waste and Recycling Policy, the Greater Shepparton City Council has set out its expected time frames for the roll out of changes to the current waste collection service in the region.

Beginning in March 2023, Kialla and Tatura residents will have their red bin collection reduced to once per fortnight while the green bin will be collected weekly to minimize bin contamination as well as ensure Council remains on track in meeting State Government targets.

With a seamless transition in mind, the staggered changes will see the rest of the region follow suit approximately six months later, and ahead of the implementation of a fourth, purple lid bin in March 2024.

The purple lid bin will be used for the collection of glass.

Acknowledging that Council would need to undertake significant community education about the kerbside changes, Mayor Shane Sali

said, “Council has a responsibility to abide by the State Government’s Waste and Recycling Policy which means these changes have to be made.

“This project plan has been developed to work through each step of the roll out and ensure these changes are made in the most efficient and suitable way,” Mayor Sali said, before adding, “Council will undertake a substantial amount of community education and engagement from early next year to ensure residents are aware how and when changes will take place. Community education is a huge part of the transition.”

The State Government Waste and Recycling Policy is designed to have a significant and positive impact on the environment by reducing the amount of waste going into landfill.

For further information about the roll out visit Council’s website at greatershepparton. com.au/kerbside-collection-changes-faq

Questions remain on Voice to Parliament

ON Monday, the Nationals party room came to a joint position to oppose the proposition of a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament.

I support the party room’s decision – at this point in time. I strongly believe if a referendum is put to the people of Australia proposing to alter the Constitution to create a new instrument of government, then the people are entitled to know what that instrument is, how it would be formed and what impact it would have in improving the health and prosperity of Indigenous people. This last point is what I am focussed on working to achieve.

I have reservations about a constitutionally enshrined instrument of government based on race. In my maiden speech to parliament, I said that ‘my observation of my community is that we seem to do better when we celebrate each other’s different cultural identity but moreover embrace each other’s humanity – humanity being a stronger bond between us than any attempt to be amplified by race, gender sexual orientation or religious view’. I believe this is the way we need to move forward as a society. I hope the Indigenous people in Nicholls do know they have a voice. My predecessors in this role have facilitated meetings between local Indigenous leaders and government ministers, and I commit to doing this even more extensively.

I believe that the deliberate lack of detail, and the Albanese government’s refusal to provide any detail means the referendum risks failure.

Ultimately, every Australian voter will have to make a choice and without sufficient detail many will also tread cautiously.

A failed referendum sets reconciliation back a long way –and I don’t want to see that for First Nations people’s or our nation. Though the motives for voting against the referendum would be, in my view, lack of detail, many would impugn a racist motive, and this creates more division.

Historically, there are wrongs to be righted, and we need

to be able to unite on this issue. Surely the best way to do that is to provide the detail and work together to convince Australians of the merits. This is not what the government is currently doing.

As I stated, I am against the voice proposal at this point in time. My coalition colleague, Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians, Julian Leeser has proposed that the government needs to provide answers to seven questions in order for Australians to have confidence in supporting a Voice to Parliament.

• Who will be on the Voice?

• How will these people be chosen?

• What powers and functions will it have?

• How will it represent the diverse communities that make up our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?

• How will it address the real issues that affect people’s lives

every day in communities?

• Will regional and local bodies exist?

CONSTITUTION

• How will the government ensure the body hears from voices who don’t already have a platform in Australian public life?

Labor has proposed a simple question for a possible referendum to be held before the next election: “Do you support an alteration to the Constitution that establishes an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice?”

Without detail we risk unintended consequences, and it is my responsibility as an elected representative to carefully analyse something so significant. What the parliament will decide on will be the wording of a proposed amendment of the Constitution. If that does pass, it will go to a referendum and it will be up to each and every one of the constituents of Nicholls to make their own decision based on the information before them.

Give generously to save Christmas

continued from front page

UNDERSTANDING many families are living in temporary accommodation or staying with friends and family, Greater Shepparton Foundation launched GIVIT Together this Christmas campaign to support flood-affected families in Greater Shepparton to purchase Christmas gifts.

“Many of the region’s most vulnerable children and families have lost their homes and belongings and face a long road ahead as they find secure housing and battle with the cost-of-living pressures to get back on their feet,” explained Greater Shepparton Foundation CEO, Amanda McCulloch.

Facilitated by the GIVIT online platform, a not-for-profit that matches generous donations with genuine need, the national campaign encourages donors to support the purchase of gift vouchers that will allow families to select items suitable for their children and their situation.

Run in partnership with local primary schools to identify and assist those families most in need, the campaign will run from December 1 until Sunday, December 20, with vouchers delivered to primary schools before the end of term.

see the kids and their families and what they might be lacking. That is where GIVIT can help fill the gap,” said GIVIT Together Victorian engagement officer, Max Visser.

So far, four local schools including Mooroopna Park Primary School are involved. If more schools jump on board, the community can have the greatest impact in bringing Christmas cheer to many local families.

More information is available from www.greatershepparton.foundation and primary schools can register their interest by emailing info@greatershepparton.

Notre Dame proactive in securing our future

IN a bid to help combat the chronic healthcare skills shortage, Notre Dame College have partnered with GV Health and La Trobe University to officially launch their VETDSS Health Program.

After a highly successful pilot in 2022, with those students now transitioning into their second year, those a part of the program will embark on a learning journey, supported by local organisations, to develop skills and qualifications in health care.

Students in the program get hands-on work experience at GV Hospital and learn at the La Trobe University Shepparton campus.

Deputy principal at Notre Dame College, Kris Walker spoke of how this program, the first of its kind in the region, has proven to be an invaluable opportunity for participating students.

“We are supportive of all students whether their aspirations after year 12 are of a tertiary nature or if they have a trade-based career path in their sights. All careers are equally important, and if we can help nurture those interests during the final years of high school, students who enter the workforce with work experience already under their belt are looked at favourably by prospective employers.”

Breanne Collier aspires to study a double degree in nursing and paramedicine and is grateful for the opportunity to undertake a whole new concept of learning, as well as the chance to experience what her chosen career will be like early on.

“The day we learn on campus at La Trobe is my favourite day of the week,” Breanne said.

“Now that I’ve had experience working in a hospital, it’s really cemented for me that a

career in the medical field is something I’m really passionate about.”

Places in the VETDSS Health Program 2023 are limited to 20, with students who wish to be considered required to demonstrate a strong commitment to their studies and learning.

“We are so proud of these students. Their enthusiasm and love of this program is a testament to how a learning model which encompasses both practice and theory gives young people a head start, and how it leads

Join the Music, Arts and Culture Committee

GREATER Shepparton’s Young Champions Youth Committee are looking for young people to be part of The Music, Arts and Culture Committee (The MACC).

The MACC will plan, run and support safe, youth-friendly music, arts and culture events in Greater Shepparton. These events will include a variety of upskilling, cultural, recreational and music events that will be reflective of the interests of young people in our community. Applications are now open for new members aged 12-25 years to join.

Funding from the Victorian Government was granted for the ‘FReeZA’ program, previously supporters of the popular ‘Word and Mouth’ group, to encourage and promote youth-friendly events.

Through initiatives such as FReeZA and The MACC, young people can take a central role in staging events in the local community said Mayor for Greater Shepparton City Council, Cr Shane Sali.

“This is a great opportunity for our young people to develop skills in leading, organising and developing events as well as showcasing their skills and talents and being seen in the community,” Shane said.

If you’re aged between 12-25 and love music, arts and culture, Council want to hear from you. Apply online at Shaping Greater Shepparton shaping.greatershepparton.com.au/freeza-macc or phone Council on 5832 9700 and ask to speak with the Youth Development Officer. Applications close Monday, December 12, 2022.

to great outcomes such as a wealth of work experience in their chosen field early on,” said Kris.

Notre Dame College has several VET programs that are delivered through the college in collaboration with local organisations and institutions rather than outside education providers. The popularity of these courses, from those centred on the health care sector to the building industry, will help ensure the current skills shortage will be less of a burden in coming years.

Colourful display on Country

ARTWORKS by local artist and Yorta Yorta woman Melissa Cowan were unveiled at a special event at Ardmona Primary School on Friday.

Ardmona PS hosted guests and students from ASHE and Mooroopna Park Primary School for a smoking ceremony. The event sought to bring people together and to celebrate the school’s new outdoor learning space.

The mural shows two men at a campfire and walking tracks that lead to the waterholes, where Melissa has painted her ancestors as turtles. During the eight weeks where she painted the artwork, she said two kookaburras would watch as she worked from a gumtree, all these plus many familiar wildlife from the area have been reproduced in this colourful work.

“Bunjil, which is the eagle, I’ve done in the opposite way. So, it looks like it has flown across all the turtles, across the Elders and onto this painting, protecting

the land,” said Melissa, explaining the story behind the artwork, which uses traditional painting techniques significant to Indigenous culture, like cross-hatching.

Upgrades, including the murals, were made possible through State Government funding.

“We’ve had two active sports grants. The first one funded our basketball court, but the second one we implemented into our learning programs. A big key to that was our painting artwork done by Liss and Les [Cowan],” explained Koori education support and student wellbeing coordinator Nathan Turner.

The outdoor area provides a space where students can meet for physical education lessons, providing an outdoor learning environment with the benefits of a classroom.

Also on the day, students participated in traditional Indigenous games within the outdoor learning area.

25 years of recognising local business excellence

THE original date was postponed due to flooding across the region, and the venue has been changed to the GV Hotel Cabaret Room, 223 High Street, Shepparton.

All nominees of the 2021 and 2022 White King – Pental Triple M Business Awards, as well as friends, family and the wider community, will celebrate 25 years of recognising local business excellence.

Each of the finalists are eagerly awaiting who will be named victors of each of the categories, and who will come out on top as this year’s Hall of Fame business winner.

Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry executive officer, Tracy Lyle, and the Chamber board are excited to celebrate alongside the nominees.

“This year we received 200+ nominations, a positive indication for the business awards because it highlights that our nomination processes are reaching all across ‘Greater Shepparton’ and a testament to the camaraderie and fortitude of our entire business community,” said Tracy.

“It is wonderful to see businesses being recognised for the fantastic work they do. There is solid competition across all categories, especially the entrepreneur of the year award, young professional of the year award categories and we had

a record number of nominations in the best new business of the year category.”

There is a multitude of organisations which work together to bring the awards to our community each year.

“Our partners, 95.3 Triple M, WIN TV and The Adviser have been amazing with their coverage and advertising of the Awards, we are also appreciative of the ongoing support received from Shepparton Club, WDEA Works, Harvey Norman Shepparton, Greater Shepparton City Council, Tourism Greater Shepparton (which has recently been rebranded Destination Goulburn Valley), Greater Shepparton Business Centre, the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, GOTAFE, GV Health, La Trobe University, NBN Co. and Greater Shepparton City Council Environmental Department,” said Tracy.

“It was also fantastic to see that White King-Pental came on board again this year. It shows their dedication to the local business community. This will be their final business awards, and we thank them for seven wonderful years of support.”

Since 2015, White King-Pental have been a major sponsor of the awards.

“Being a part of this initiative has afforded White King-Pental the opportunity to be a driving force behind encouraging local commerce and industry to reach new heights. As a local, yet large entity, we believe considering the wider community in our business decisions is imperative to working towards the greater good,” reflected White King – Pental site manager, Carmine Conte.

“It’s been an honour to play such a large part in these awards and we are sad our time has drawn to a close. Our collaboration has even encouraged a sense of pride amongst our employees, a big reason why we are an employer of choice in our region.”

This year’s Gala Dinner is shaping up to be the best year yet, a combination of the calibre of nominees, an inability for the event to go ahead in recent years and the combined efforts of our business community as one entity.

“On behalf of the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry I would like to wish all the nominees the best of luck and look forward to seeing them all at the Gala Dinner,” said Tracy.

Celebrating Shepparton Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Business Awards Hall of Fame recipients

EVERY year since the early 1990s, the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce & Industry has facilitated the region’s premier business awards to pay recognition to local businesses and individuals that demonstrate excellence in their fields (excluding the Covid years of 2020 & 2021). Since 2007, 13 recipients have been added to the business award’s Hall of Fame.

The awards have not been able to go ahead since 2020, meaning this year Shepparton Chamber of Commerce & Industry will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the awards, making now the opportune time to acknowledge previous Hall of Fame recipients, those many long-standing businesses from

FIX Muscle Performance has some super exciting opportunities for 2023

FIX Movement Performance will kick off 2023 by welcoming new staff to its exceptional team with additional myotherapists and physiotherapists.

The new year will also see the clinic’s highly successful Virtual Movement Performance classes, popular across Australia, offer new opportunities for members to benefit from Q&A sessions with highly experienced and professional staff, following each online instruction.

These sessions will be offered to all members at a discounted rate in 2023, as Fix aims to cultivate greater trust and understanding in the accessibility of its telehealth services.

Yoga, hot yoga and meditation classes will also be new additions at Fix as well as the introduction of its Flex Fix program which will enable clients to book the clinic’s facilities throughout the day for personal usage, much like a gym.

For all new members signing up for casual or class passes before January 1, a free one-on-one session with a qualified exercise physiologist will also be on offer to provide individual

assessment as well as tailored personal programs.

With no contracts, no cancellation fees and locked membership prices for the next 18 months, you’d be mad not to sign up today.

More than satisfied with the friendly service and exemplary care she received at Fix Movement Performance, Joan from Melbourne said, “Fix is value for money! I pay twice as much in Melbourne, and it is nothing like what the Shepparton clinic has to offer.

“The centre here is a treasure, it’s friendly, super clean and beautiful. Greater Shepparton is so lucky to have its Fix Movement Performance.”

Codn’t be a better time!

RECREATIONAL fishers are being encouraged to check waterway conditions before they leave home as cod season has officially commenced.

Victorian Fisheries Authority CEO Travis Dowling said the Murray cod closed season during September, October, and November each year gives the species a chance to breed in peace.

“This season will be unusual with dozens of popular waterways flood affected and

potentially unsafe, even for shore-based freshwater fishers,” Mr Dowling said.

“We urge everyone to plan ahead, do their homework on river conditions and if in doubt, head to safer destinations such as Lake Eildon, Taylors Lake near Horsham, or Rocklands Reservoir out west."

Mr Dowling said track and road closures could also mean favourite spots for season opening are inaccessible or suitable for fourwheel drives only.

“There is a lot of information about the condition of tracks, boat ramps, lakes and rivers so now is the time to jump online, get informed about the prevailing conditions and short-list your options.”

Murray Cod have a bag limit of one in rivers and two in specific lakes and impoundments. They carry a minimum size limit of 55cm and maximum size limit of 75cm. For more information visit the Victorian Fisheries Authority Murray Cod

Last shot to shop at Shepparton Camera House

SINCE announcing it will close its doors, the community has come out in support of Shepparton Camera House and it’s near 40 years of providing vital camera services to the region.

“The photographic industry has changed dramatically,” reflected store owner, Ian Bugg. “The online sales have killed the hardware industry, while phones and iPads have killed the processing industry.”

“Back in the heyday, we would process something like 2,500 to 3,000 rolls of film a month and have at least three people employed full-time in our film processing division –now we have one.”

Since 1978, Camera Houses nation-wide have slowly closed their doors. Once Shepparton Camera House officially shuts up shop, there will be only four left in Victoria.

“I think everyone will be disappointed that this is how it’s come to be. With the death of camera stores, you lose all that specialised photography knowledge our staff have and specialised services that are only available at our store,” said

The news of the closure is bittersweet for local photographers and optic-enthusiasts, with huge sales of up to 50 percent off selected lines.

However, the closure of the business will spell the loss of

Victorian Wine Show sets our region apart

THE Goulburn Valley hosts some of Victoria’s oldest family-owned vineyards, providing a fine snapshot of the state’s rich wine history only a stone’s throw away from the region’s centre.

Local wine labels made an impression at the 2022 Victorian Wine Show said Paul Phillips, proprietor of Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre.

“Local producers have brought in some

gold, silver and bronze medals. So, the judges have spoken, indicating that our local wines are performing on the big stage,” said Paul.

“The Strathbogie Ranges’ cooler climate varietals are outstanding, particularly Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio. Down on the valley floor, our shining light is our full bodied Shiraz.”

Phillips Cellars are proud to represent 45 local wineries and more than 300 local wines,

which have each earned a fabulous reputation for their taste and uniqueness.

For the best local Shiraz, Paul recommends Maygers Hill, Tallis and Longleat. Those that prefer white wines should try Allira, Wine by Sam and Antcliff’s Chase Riesling.

“The King Valley is a hidden pocket producing some of the best value small region wines around,” said Paul.

“Gapsted, Politini, Pizzini, John Gehrig

and Dal Zotto produce some Italian wines at the top of their class.”

Paul and his knowledgeable team can direct you to the drop that suits your taste or needs. They also sell a large range of home brew supplies and local labels, perfect for gifts or entertaining.

For more information, visit Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre at 119 Corio Street, Shepparton, or phone 5821 2051.

Thank you, Suzanna Sheed, for your great achievements over the past eight years.

You put Shepparton on the map and there are more projects that needed your expertise and negotiating skills. You should be proud of all you have achieved and what a role

STRAIGHT out of the atomic age the iconic, 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air was big, bold and confident, in many ways reflecting the optimism encapsulated in the American dream itself.

A bestseller for much of the 1950s and 1960s, the Chevrolet Bel Air took its name from an up-market suburb of Los Angeles and was a family favourite until production ceased in the mid-1970s.

With its signature curved windscreen and enormous batwing fins, the six-meter-long car was a vehicle that Shepparton local,

Sahil Raj just had to have as soon as he saw it.

Imported from Long Beach, California, Sahil said he ‘jumped on the opportunity’ to purchase the nassau blue and ivory automobile once it had arrived in Australia, following a fallen through sale.

Featuring all original parts, the left-hand drive boasts 283 cubic inches of V8 engine, complete with column shift, electric wipers, front and back arm rests and ‘enough ashtrays to accommodate every passenger.’

Although surprisingly economical to run after some initial engine work, Sahil said

that cruising down the highway was like being transported back in time, to an era where the journey was just as important as the destination.

“When you drive the Bel Air, everything just slows down, it's like another time entirely.

“I really love it when I drive past older people and they just stop, stare and then smile. It’s a car that definitely brings out the best reactions; it’s nostalgia, it’s the style and it's the massive batwings,” Sahil said with a smile.

Saturday basketball a big hit

THERE was lots of great basketball action at Kyabram's stadium on Saturday.

Kyabram's own Liam McInness made an appearance with his representative side Rochester Tigers.

Kyabram Youth Club is bringing basketball back to the community. Basketball was lost when the town’s basketball association ceased to exist about 20 years ago. The Club’s aim is to give Kyabram and district basketball enthusiasts an opportunity to play in their own town again.

Adults play Sunday afternoons at 5pm and primary and secondary aged girls and boys play on Mondays from 3.30-7.30pm.

A pre-school learn-to-play for boys and girls is also held on Monday evenings.

For information on how to join Kyabram Youth Club's basketball offerings, go to www.kyabramyouthclub.com. Men, women, children and teenagers are welcome to join the growing numbers.

The backbone of local basketball

THE very people who’ve made basketball happen in Greater Shepparton over many years gathered recently for the Greater Shepparton Basketball Association’s first ever Life Members Presentation Gala Dinner.

“Basketball has been very good to these people, but more importantly these people have been good to basketball. They’ve given endless hours of their time, passion, and meritorious service to the association over many years and have been deemed by their peers to be worthy of the highest honour and shall receive all rights and privileges as determined by the association” said GSBA president, Peter Sutherland.

27 Life members, were re-recognised and presented with new medallions and framed certificates featuring the new GSBA logo, and professionally photographed against the GSBA media wall with dignitary David Huxtable from Basketball Victoria.

The eight new inductees on the night were Ange Frame, sisters Kylie Doyle & Jackie Marshall, Ian McDonald, Peter Sutherland, Michelle Judd, and Bruce and Laurell Bartlett.

Well-known basketball identity, Noel

Browne, opened the evening with a trip down memory lane of wonderful history noting the great players, umpires, characters and coaches who applied their magic and took players to elite levels.

The names who led the association over the past 50 plus years were all in attendance, Ada Harris, Shane O’Brien, Ray Nioa, Tony Long and David Freer.

Umpires Keith Rensford and Mal Watt shared wonderful memories, together with revered coaches Russell Parker, Speedy Frame, Jim Wilson, and Chris Judd.

Generations are thankful to the ladies who’ve been in the office, in the ticket box, managing the draws and courts, respected names like Di Lundberg, the numbers wizard Pat Edwards, Alison Mastin, Laurell Bartlett, Junior’s flag flyer Mary-Ann Barton, Joan McAuliffe and the first-ever lady Gator Jodie Freer who played 287 games for the Gators.

Rex Collard, Simon Mills, Irene Young, Judy Bogdan, and Deenie Rensford were unable to make the night, however, all were dually noted for the stellar contributions.

In 2023 plans are underway for a ‘GSBA Back To Event’ for players, coaches and

supporters and the association is currently gathering materials to ensure a spectacular event.

For years now local basketball has been experiencing growing pains and the GSBA is working with Basketball Victoria and
