Characters come to life at St Anne’s College during book week

NEWS Page 4 – The Adviser Australia No.1:1626 Wednesday, August 31, 2022

“Enjoying books is a lifelong skill of being able to read, but also as a hobby or an interest reading allows you to get lost in a story, and that is something you can do no matter what age you are.”

THE Cat in the Hat is up to his tricks while Hermione casts a spell. Wally is lost, Matilda has been stolen and the Dalmatians are missing as well. Suspicions are roused and ears are pricked but all eyes fall on Cruella de Vil. Book Week has been bringing children and stories together all-round Australia since 1945, and from Aug 20-Aug 26, the School of Wonder students at St Anne’s College have been no exception. Beginning with a two-week reading challenge, students at the school have dived into books shortlisted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, for their annual awards, and have explored the fantastical worlds created by some of the country’s best authors and illustrators.

Energised by story and inspired by their favourite fictional characters, Book Week celebrations culminated at St Anne’s with a colourful dress-up parade.

“We have been doing a lot of reading and the children have had a lot of fun enjoying activities relating to this year’s nominated books,” says Kara McCann, School of Wonder team leader.

“I just love dressing up,” said year 2 student, Aki Fujimoto, brandishing a pirate's hook, “All I want to do is pretend I’m a character from a book I’ve read,” he said with a smile.

By Deanne Jeffers GREATER Shepparton Basketball Association (GSBA) has joined the call for a $60M rebuild of the Shepparton Sports Stadium.Thestadium, which is home to the Shepparton Gators, is missing out on larger tournaments, keen players, and eager fans that are being turned away due to the lack of amenities.“Starting our next season, we’re going to have 1,200 plus registered competitors so far, that’s probably the biggest competition I’ve seen in 40 years,” said Tony Long from the GSBA."At Gators games we’re sending people away because we can’t get them in, we can’t fit them here. “It’s a massive and a great problem to have, but it’s a massive problem. We’ve wanted extra courts for a long time now,” said Mr Long, who said expanding the stadium has been a priority since the year 2000.Federal Coalition candidates pledged $25M during the election, and while Sam Birrell MP won the seat, the Coalition lucked out at the election placing the commitment in Thelimbo.remaining funding for the new $60M Shepparton Sports and Events Centre would be provided by $20M from the Victorian Government and $15M from the council. Mr Birrell invited Shadow Minister for Regional Development, Dr Anne Webster to the stadium last week to call upon the Albanese Government to deliver the funding.

“My encouragement to the Labor Government is that they step up and fund this facility as we committed to and the Victorian Government also does the same, because our regions thrive when our sporting facilities are appropriate for the enthusiasm that is here and the skills that are here.

“We want to keep building our regions and this is one of the best ways to do that,” said Dr Webster. The proposed rebuild would include six courts, a show court that includes a 3,000seat retractable grandstand, new amenities, external works, with room and plans for future growth. Mr Long admitted that the new build would not secure new tournaments for Shepparton, but it would begin to futureproof the stadium’s ageing status.

NINE recruits will be stationed in Shepparton, with a total of 50 recruits rolled out to the Hume region – the largest increase under the graduate program. We met with three bright young women who are among them. “One of the biggest challenges moving out somewhere rural is that you don’t have a friend support system if you’re not from the area,” said 24-year-old graduate paramedic Bree Behrsin. “We’ve been pretty lucky to come to Shepparton, especially Brigitte and I because we did induction together. Having our induction group locally has helped overcomeBrigittethat.”Bertolus, 21-years, is a paramedic graduate born and raised in Shepparton. She said, “Even though I was coming back to where I grew up, a lot of my friends have moved away to go to uni and start lives in other places.” “Every day is different as a paramedic, which is a big part of what drew me to the job. I’m enjoying being in Shepparton and the mix of time here – there are big jobs, but we also have enough time for meal breaks,” said Sarah Dalton, 33-years, who is qualified interstate paramedic recruit fromGraduateMelbourne.paramedics are fully credentialed after one year, after which they continue professional development and education throughout their careers to provide care to the community and to stay safe while doing so.

ONE of the worlds and Australia’s oldest Bentleys will turn 100 in September, coinciding with a Bentley Drivers Club of Australia trip through the region. Currently on display at MOVE, this magnificent Blue Badge three-litre Bentley is a three-seater Cloverleaf Tourer (still original body) by Lawrence Cutter of Ballarat. It arrived in Australia in September 1922 much to the excitement of its original owner, Oswald Syme (son of David Syme, proprietor of Melbourne’s The Age newspaper).Thenew body was completed in time for him to compete in the RACV 1,000mile Alpine Trial in November 1922. A few weeks later, Oswald Syme recorded the fastest time at the Gap Hill Climb – the first competition win for Bentley in Australia. This rare engine No. 139 four-cylinder scruffy, chassis No. 142, has been on the road most of its life; covering and estimated more than 1M kilometres (725,000 miles). Through September, the Bentley Drivers Club of Australia will visit Northeast Victoria on a Silo Art Tour. They will visit Shepparton on days four-six, where the group will visit MOVE and the 100-yearold Bentley on display, as well as stopping past local delights such as SAM, the Australian Botanic Gardens, the Shepparton Golf Club and more. Don’t miss this historic marvel while it is on display and keep your eyes open September 16-18, for when the Bentleys come to Shepparton.

WHAT goes around comes around, is true enough but even better is, kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.Living up to one of these adages in day-today life is remarkable for any person, but to be a shining example of both, is exceptional. Two people who fit this description are Joe Di Conza and his mother Tina, who own and run the iconic BP Truckstop and service station at 176 Numurkah Road. After sadly losing sister and daughter, Alfina, in 1991 and wanting to give back to the compassionate staff at Goulburn Valley Hospice who cared for her, the Di Conza family decided to donate ongoing fuel to the organisation.Tragicallyfollowing his daughter in 2003, Pat passed away also while in the care of GV“TheyHospice.looked after my sister when she was dying in 1991 and they looked after Dad in 2003. So, they are the most beautiful people,” said Joe, “…and we wanted to give back to their generosity.” In recent times, Joe and Tina have had to cease their donation of fuel to GV Hospice as the organisation’s fleet of cars has grown bigger, but Joe and his mother continue to donate to the palliative care service where they“Nowcan. we donate in other ways, we donate items from the shop when we have items in bulk or are near their used by date.” With over 25 years of donating fuel and other goods to GV Hospice, ‘beautiful people,’ sounds like an appropriate label all round.

Flood warning

“If you ever come across floodwater, it’s vital you never enter it. It can take just 15cm of water for a small car to float or lose traction, it may be the last decision you ever make,” said Mr Corboy. Stay prepared by checking the BoM weather app, the Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s weekly river report, and the VicEmergency website or app.

Photo: Natasha Fujimoto WITH wet weather and water storages nearing capacity, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) and the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) are urging communities to prepare themselves and their properties in the event of a flood.Martina Cusack, GMW Water Storage Services general manager, said it is important people are equipped for potential“Above-averageflooding. rainfall is expected in all catchments in northern Victoria and there is an increased chance of flooding,” Ms Cusack said. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has moved the ENSO Outlook to La Nina Alert, meaning the chance of La Nine forming in the coming months has increased to about 70 percent.

“Get ready before the rain falls. We know this spring is expected to be wetter than average. Understanding your risk and early preparation is the best defence against flooding. Although your home may not be at direct risk from riverine flooding, your community could be isolated by floodwater,” said VICSES acting assistant chief officer, Brendan Corboy. VICSES has created over 140 local guides for at risk townships and they strongly encourage residents to go to the VICSES interactive map to look up their Local Flood Guide.

RISING to the challenge, the Shepparton Golf Club was a sea of yellow on Saturday, August 20, as nearly 200 golfers took to the course in honour of local golfer, Jarrod Lyle, for the #DoingItForJarrod fundraising event.Asuccessful, international golfer, Jarrod Lyle was also a devoted ambassador for Challenge, an organisation dedicated to raising money for children with cancer and their families. Yellow was Jarrod’s signature colour as a cancer fundraiser, before sadly succumbing to a form of the disease in 2018. In a quest to raise 17K for Challenge, the Shepparton Club, along with its many sponsors and supporters raised an astounding $38K, more than doubling its original target. “The Shepparton Golf Club is proud to now hold the National fundraising record for a #DoingItForJarrod event of over $38K and look forward to other cubs breaking our fundraising record,” says Ray Sizer, long-time friend of Jarrod.

After five years lobbying, The Shepparton Heritage Museum is on the cusp of rebuilding, to scale, a replica of the grand, Shepparton Post Office c. 1882, which stood it all its Victorian splendour on Fraser Street, until its controversial demolition in 1973.

The new site for the ‘old’ post office will be on the corner of Midland Highway and Welsford street, where the current Heritage Centre Cottage is situated. As the new History Museum, the post office will showcase local history across multiple new gallery spaces for the Greater Shepparton Archives.“This is to future proof what we’re doing with history,” says Heritage Centre manager, Geoff Allemand. “It is wonderful that Shepparton has major attractions in SAM and MOVE motor museum; they are very impressive to look at. We believe the Heritage Centre and our Post Office Museum would be another big draw card. It’s a vote of confidence for history.”

NOW that some major upgrades have been completed on the Shepparton Line Upgrade, it’s time to celebrate the progression of the major overhaul of the regional rail network.

With funding from council to be ratified, The Heritage Centre is raising funds for preparatory works for the rebuild by ingeniously selling post office boxes as time capsules with a lease of 99 years and have also started a GofundMe campaign. But it is perhaps the historical connection to the Heritage Centre site itself, that compounds the significance of post office rebuild. In 1858, a general store keeper by the name of F P Knight became the first Postmaster of Shepparton, and his postal service ran from the very sight of the new rebuild project. WHAT do you get for a bloke who seems to have it all? The experience of a lovely lunch or dinner, of course. Head to the picturesque Rochester Tavern with dad, pop or anyone you consider a father-figure for a meal and their first drink will be on the house. The 1870’s-built property boasts six separate areas to relax, dine and experience wines from the Yarra Valley, Adelaide Hills regions and locally from Ellis Wines. A paved courtyard area, complete with a 100-year-old Peppercorn tree, an alleyway area under hanging lights, a formal dining room featuring a rustic fireplace, front bar area and a bistro area with a formal lounge means there is something for everyone. There’s no need to slave over the stove when the team at the tavern have it all taken care of for your family. For bookings contact Olivia on 0481 774 986. The Rochester Tavern is located at 49 Moore St, Rochester.

Great

The Magpies have done an excellent job to win 14 of their 18 games this winter.

Jayden Gleeson, Jack Hellier, Andrew Bell, Harrison Jarvie, Nate Trotter and ruckman Andrew Smith will be important players in trying to lead the way for the Pies.

Leadingseries.goal-kickers for Mooroopna: Chris Nield 77 goals, Lucas Caccaviello 17 goals and Jackson Trengove 14 goals (in six games). Leading goal-kickers for Rochester: Steven Stroobants 46, Mitch Cricelli 44 and Hugh Hamilton 15 (in seven games).

The Bombers have won three of the last four premierships, their last in 2019 when it accounted for Echuca. That was the last completed GVL season due to COVID-19.

The moment of truth has arrived for Echuca and Mansfield as they look to take the first step towards qualification for the September 25Bothdecider.have earnt the right to play in the qualifying final after outstanding home and awayEchucaseasons.finished with a 17-1 record while Mansfield won 15 of its 18 matches, including its last seven games. Many pundits believe the Murray Bombers are a sure thing to at least qualify for the grand final and the favourite to claim its first premiership since 2002.

ROCHESTER V MOOROOPNA This will be an interesting contest between two of the league’s great stories. Rochester had to overcome injury and adversity to win its final five games to qualify for the finals while Mooroopna engineered its best home and away win in years to book its place in September for the first time since 2014 by defeating minor premier Echuca. When the teams last clashed the game was over at quarter time. The Cats blasted the visiting Tigers off the park with seven first quarter goals. Tiger coach Steven Stroobants will be aware of that fact as will Cats coach John Lamont. Ethan Hunt, Ben Hicks, Christopher Nield, Keelin Betson, Jed Woods and the returning Dom Gugliotti will be important for the Cats as will Jackson Trengove. Joseph Atley, Shaun Atley, Adam McPhee, Nathan Kay, Hugh Hamilton and Mitch Cricelli will be important for the Tigers to continue into the second week. The game will be won and lost in the midfield.Ex-Kangaroo Shaun Atley will play a pivotal role and the Cats hierarchy made need to consider putting a tag on him. For mine, I do like the Cats willingness to take on the game at all costs. If they can execute that fast-paced game style, then they win and advance to week 2 of the finals’

Adviser By Sam Sarancino ECHUCA V MANSFIELD

Leading goal-kickers for Kyabram: Cooper Vick 30, Lachie Smith 28, Tom Holman 28, Anthony DePasquale 27 and Kayne Pettifer 18.Leading goal-kickers for Euroa: Jett Trotter 43 goals, Erishmilan Uthayakumar 42 goals and Tristan Davies 36 goals.

I think the Pies win to take on the winner of the Echuca v Mansfield game for a spot in the September 25 decider.

While the reigning premier will look to Brad Whitford, Zachary Norris, Joshua Dillon, Kaine Herbert, Jason Morgan and Lachie Smith to try an inspire them to overcome the Pies. The Bombers have an interesting season. They have had to grind out some wins, but that helps build resilience, especially as the Bombers blood more and more youngsters into the team. For mine, the Pies are playing the better football.

Euroa will be looking to advance to the second week of the finals when it takes on the reigning Kyabram. Are we about to see the end of an era with the all-conquering Kyabram?
