Village effort driving results THE impact of GV Hospice Care Service is well-known in Greater Shepparton. Their special team of health professionals, nurses, volunteers and other staff work to provide a specialist community-based driven care supporting end-of-life patients and their families.

“People can be referred to Hospice by their doctor, oncologist, hospital, family, or they can self-refer, but the person being referred must agree,” said GV Hospice Care president, John Beaver.

Through GV Hospice, a nurse can be made available to discuss a person’s concern any time of the day or night, 24-hours-a-day, 365 days a year, inclusive of all public holidays.

“Many people believe that a palliative care diagnosis is a death sentence, but that is not always the case. People don’t always die, they can be discharged because they get well and then they might come back to us in the future,” said volunteer coordinator, Maree Chin.

GV Hospice Care supports people with a life-threatening illness to live well, and in doing so, provides support within the person’s home to support symptom management and to improve the quality of life of individuals, carers and families.

“I have been involved with Hospice for about 28 years, meeting with them and representing them in Parliament and was always aware of their wonderful reputation and service,” said GV Hospice Care president, Jeanette Powell, a role she has held since 2019.

“The Hospice Committee of Management is a voluntary team of passionate, dedicated, skilled local people committed to ensuring Hospice has the funds, policies and staff to

continue to meet the palliative care needs of the community, now and into the future.

GV Hospice Care welcomes, encourages, and supports the participation of many diverse volunteers, who contribute in a myriad of ways to enhance the provision of palliative care services in Greater Shepparton. By Natasha Fujimoto COMMUNITY is everything at the Greater Shepparton Secondary College, and this holds specific resonance for the school’s 250 Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students and educators.

During NAIDOC celebrations last week, the focus was on community building through cultural learning and traditional activities, complementing the ongoing commitment and progress within the school to incorporate an Indigenous voice as an advisory on teaching First Nations culture and history.

How and what Indigenous students are taught at GSSC, now include Indigenous community input, as a result of the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the college and the Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.

With the intent of taking advantage of

every pivotal opportunity forwarded by the MOU and in the spirit of collaborative and co-operative change, the Ngarri Ngarri (teaching, learning) team of Koorie educators led the way in facilitating an engaging NAIDOC program for the entire school.

NAIDOC program events included: guest speakers from The First Peoples Assembly of Victoria and the Korin Gamadji Institute (and extension of the Richmond football club), weaving, making damper, playing traditional games and incorporating a First Nation’s playlist for bell time music.

For Senior Koorie Education Advisor, Larissa Falla, “The NAIDOC week celebrations at GSSC provided an opportunity for the whole school community to grow their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures of Australia’s First Nation’s people.”

Giving voice to nonverbal students at Verney Road IT’S all about voice, not just the kind that is produced when air passes through the vocal cords causing them to vibrate creating sound, but the indelible right to communicate and be heard.

From poets to politicians, the power and significance of an individual’s voice has been well recognised, so when CEO of State Schools’ Relief, Sue Karzis recently donated seven iPads to nonverbal students at Verney Road School, it was more than just the handing over of an educational resource.

A Victorian not-for-profit organisation, State Schools’ Relief in partnership with Bank First and Australian Schools Canteen Association have raised funds to provide 423 iPads to nonverbal students across the state over the past three years.

Presenting seven of these iPads to students at Verney Road school, Sue describes the sheer delight on the student’s faces as they received their devices last Monday as being, ‘simply incredible.’

In an earlier statement Sue said, “The iPad for non-verbal students is one of the most impactful programs that we run at States Schools’ Relief; to be able to provide a young person with the means to communicate their wants and needs is transformational.”

APPEALING FOR WITNESSES POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward following an assault and theft in Shepparton. The incident occurred near the corner of Fryers Street and Midland Highway at around 1:00am on Saturday, July 23.

A 42-year-old man, walking home was approached by a teenage girl and a woman in her forties. It’s alleged the two assaulted the victim before stealing his personal belongings.

SHEPPARTON BURGLARY SHEPPARTON detectives are investigating a burglary that occurred at Raftery road, Kialla, between 9:30pm on Tuesday July 26 and 7:30am on Wednesday July 27.

Maygars Hill takes out top Wine of the Show

By Stephanie Holliday POPULAR regional vineyard Maygars Hill has taken out the title of ‘Wine of the Show’ at the annual Dookie Wine Show Awards dinner. The 19th awards dinner event at the picturesque Shepparton Golf Club was a great success and celebration of our flourishing local wine industry.

Maygars Hill 2018 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was crowned the winning drop, the result of a very small parcel of fruit being selected for the reserve label. Intense berries that burst with flavour and vitality were handpicked alongside a percentage of whole bunches added to the ferment.

The ‘Wine of the Show’ encompasses dark fruit varietal characteristics with the signature touch of Maygars mint and was carefully matched with American oak for 14 months.

Established to promote local wines, the annual wine exhibition is held in conjunction with the Dookie A&P Society, Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre, Broker House, Camerons Lawyers, InHospitality, The Graham Family, Go Tafe, The University of Melbourne and The Shepparton Adviser.

The kid has the skills to succeed, and Sony has taken note EN T ER Jackson Fujimoto, PK A (professionally known as), Kuma the Third, an 18-year-old, Japanese/Australian lad from Shepparton, who grins wickedly not only because he has just landed his first gazelle flip at the skatepark but also because he is on the cusp of finalising a contract with music giant, Sony Australia.

Jackson is a genre bending rap artist and music producer who has worked tirelessly for the past three years, crafting his own songs and deadly beats while initiating global

collaborations with producers from as far flung as Canada to France and improbably, Kazakhstan.

Since transforming his bedroom into a make-shift studio, Jackson has garnered over 20M streams collectively over multiple online platforms, while his song, ‘I Rest My Case’, last year hit the top fifty in both Russia and Germany. To add to the song’s significant success, it was also signed to L.A label, 10K Projects – home to artists such as Trippie Red and Internet Money, earlier this year.

When asked what he believed to be key to his achievements so far, Jackson replied, “Being uncomfortable is the first step towards success as it ensures that you’re really trying and pushing for something new. I also see any set back as a test of my resolve, determination and endurance.”

Armed with such a positive mindset and work ethic, I am sure we will all be hearing a lot more from Kuma the Third in the future.

Melinda makes her mark

By Deanne Jeffers THE top job at Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) has been filled by Melinda Martin, who joins SAM with more than 20 years’ experience in arts management.

She moved from Melbourne to pursue the role, which she began on July 11 after finishing up as CEO and director of Linden New Art School in St Kilda, a role that she held until her 10th anniversary at the helm.

“I’m delighted to have relocated to Shepparton and look forward to exploring the region and getting to know the place and the community. I hope that SAM becomes a cultural and community hub – where people from all backgrounds can feel welcome,” she said.

“My vision for SAM is that this place will grow to become a hub where all people can belong, delve into stories, play, make

FMD could have devastating local impact

Rehab promise

By Deanne Jeffers THE shortage of drug rehabilitation services across the state has been acknowledged by the State Coalition Government, who have promised a new 30-bed, $36M facility for the community if elected in November.

The centre would be built as one of five new rehabilitation centres, with others planned for Frankston, Mildura, the Latrobe Valley, and metropolitan Melbourne.

Shadow Minister for Mental Health Emma Kealy joined Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell, Liberal candidate Cheryl Hammer and Nationals candidate Kim O’Keeffe to announce the pledge.

Ms Kealy said the pandemic has worsened mental health outcomes as well as access to support.

“As a result, many Victorians have turned to drugs [and alcohol] to self-medicate and get through that extreme pressure of mental health.

“We know that unless we provide more alcohol and other drug (AOD) facilities across the state, then more people are not going to get out of that terrible cycle of needing to drink or use drugs in order to get through the day.”

She said a Shepparton clinic was essential in order to reduce travel time and improve access to support services.

“I see firsthand so many locals that don’t get access to this support and see the devastation that causes our community,” said Nationals candidate Kim O’Keeffe, who said the facility is one of her most important aspirations going into the election.

Liberal candidate Cheryl Hammer said that the facility is a service that the community has spent years lobbying for. Through her work at The Cottage in Shepparton, a residential facility that assists local people to abstain from drugs and alcohol. “[The Cottage] has been filling the gap and it’s provided support for 350 people suffering addiction and their families since about 2017.

These extra 30 beds will absolutely be amazing in support and complementing the work that’s already being done here,” said Ms Hammer.

Current data shows a critical shortage of AOD beds in the state. A ratio of 0.74 rehabilitation beds per 10,000 people puts Victoria the second worst of the nation.

HEADED overseas? Travellers are urged to remain vigilant against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), particularly if travelling to and from Indonesia.

In May, FMD was detected in cattle in Indonesia and has since spread to Bali, a popular holiday destination for Australians.

Greater Shepparton mayor, Cr Shane Sali said the incursion of FMD into Australia would be devastating for the livestock industry.

“Agriculture is one of Greater Shepparton’s top five industries for employment and accounts for the greater part of $566 million in output. Foot and Mouth Disease would affect the meat processing, milk and wool industries with cattle, sheep, pigs and goats all impacted,” he said.

“The awful reality of this disease is that milk and meat production, trading and transportation of these products would need to stop, and animals would need to be euthanised to control the disease. It would mean incredible hardship for primary producers whose livelihoods would be impacted.”

Cr Sali urged locals travelling to Bali to take care on their return.

“We can all do our bit if returning from Bali. It’s not worth the huge risk to Australia’s agriculture industry to keep those pair of thongs.”

agricultural areas if you are on holiday in Indonesia,” said Cr Sali. “It can also survive in frozen, chilled and freeze-dried foods, which is why we should never bring food into Australia from overseas.”

The biggest economic implication of an Australian case would be producers losing access to global export markets, potentially for years, until the disease is contained and eradicated. Biosecurity measures are in place with producers asking those returning from Indonesia to not visit rural or farming properties within seven days of returning to Australia.

New direction for major festival THE Shepparton Festival has appointed Kristen Retallick as the new festival director.

Kristen has worked in the Arts for approximately two decades and possesses a breadth of well-rounded experience and deep community connections.

She said she is looking forward to commencing her role and taking the festival in a new direction built upon the foundation laid by the committee and outgoing operational team.

If you use the street as a commuter, pedestrian, cyclist or to shop or visit a business then Council is looking for your feedback on the final two stages of upgrade works.

Welsford Street Stages 1, 2 and 3 have been completed with Stage 4 due to commence soon. Stage 5 and 6 are out for pre-draft consultation and involve the last stretch from Wyndham Street to High Street. This is what Council seeking comments on now.

Council will prepare the draft concept designs and costings for Stages 5 and 6 upgrades after hearing from commuters, community and businesses.

Stage 4 designs have been completed for the upgrade of Welsford Street from north of Fryers Street to north of High Street. Service relocation works to support construction for Stage 4 will commence in late 2022 and will take three-to-four months to complete.

Stages 5 and 6 designs are currently being investigated and will upgrade Welsford Street from north of High Street to the Wyndham Street (Goulburn Valley Highway) and Sobraon Street intersection. Pre-draft consultation with stakeholders and landowners along Welsford Street has begun and will inform any designs prepared. Construction for Stages 5 & 6 is subject to future funding and budget allocations.

By Natasha Fujimoto AS soon as you see Riley Wooster, you just know that there is something of a writer about him. He has a quiet demeanour, whimsical saunter and a burning curiosity in his eye. But it is when Riley speaks that you can gauge the writer within. With an expansive vocabulary and a talent for detail, Riley can paint a picture with words.

Riley is an 11-year-old poet and on Sunday, July 24 at the Shepparton library, he won the prestigious Furphy Literary Award for Junior Poetry. ‘A Sea of White’, is the title of Riley’s winning piece, and it’s an eloquent, free-verse poem that employs clever metaphor, describing a legion of white corellas that swoop in to attack a farmer’s crop.

Poetry being his preferred genre, Riley says that the inspiration for the poem came from observing a flock of marauding corellas near his home during the summer and says that it took him about an hour to write the poem, with an additional half hour to edit.

“My family and I have had great pleasure enjoying the nostalgic part of a classic car where we can have those feel-good moments.

“My wife likes to pack the picnic blanket and we head off somewhere for lunch before my son tries to take it for the day, which he does on approval. At nights, I often pick my daughter and her friends up from the nightclubs.”

Greg’s T-Bird is another member of the family, and he has been privileged to take part in weddings, formals and to tour the countryside.

Imported from Texas by the first owner, the engine, paintwork, and interior are all original.

“The comfort inside and the way it handles the road, like the driver is in control and not the car. Modern cars seem to lose that feel and sense of control. Understanding and appreciating the quality and manufacturing skills motor companies had back in the 1960s in the USA makes it even more of a treasure to own.”

A few years ago, a friend sent Greg a Facebook link for a local group called GV Cars and Coffee, managed by the late Peter Russell.

“Peter’s passing from a long illness that he fought hard over the years didn’t slow him down from building a wonderful group of car enthusiasts,” said Greg.

“Even without a classic car, you were made very welcome to join in. The first GV Cars and Coffee that I went along to at Emerald Bank, Peter came straight up to me and shook my hand, said he loved my car and asked if we could go for a spin in the Thunderbird.

“So, we did, and Peter’s smile said it all. I felt in that moment that I had known Peter for a lot longer than five minutes.”

“Peter will be sadly missed by everyone at GV Cars and Coffee, but with the 600 strong members, the wheels keep spinning, the yarns keep coming, and the chrome will keep shining,” said Becko.

UNCLAIMED PRIZES: If a winner does not claim their prize by Thursday, September 1st, 2022 the prize will be re-drawn at 9:00am on Wednesday, September 21st, 2022 at the offices of “The Adviser”, 38-40 Welsford Street, Shepparton, and the new winner will be notified in accordance with these conditions. The Shepparton Swans were strong in the second half last weekend in turning the tables on Shepparton after losing to them earlier in the season, while the Bulldogs struggled to go with a rampant Rochester outfit.

Billy Cooper, Tom Sullivan, Mitchell Elliott, Aubrey Coote and James Bennett will be doing their best to try and inspire the Dogs to a much-needed win.

Bryden Squire was absolutely brilliant last weekend. James Auld, Isaiah Jones, Joeve Cooper and Max Clohesy were others to shine in the win.

CELEBRATING THE GRAND OPENING OF THE NEW

Feel-good fundraising keeps the wheels turning IT IS only through community spirit that GV Hospice Care has been able to grow and to provide end-of-life care for patients and their families on weekends, holidays, and after-hours.

“Hospice provides a free palliative care service 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, but is funded by the Victorian Government for office hours only,” said GV Hospice Care president, Jeanette Powell.

“We are very fortunate to have a very supportive and generous community who provide the extra funding so we can provide our service after hours and on the weekends and holidays.”

After-hours support is fully funded by community efforts like donations, through the GV Hospice Op Shop, and community groups and events. Over the last year, $136,000 was contributed by the community.

One generous contributor is the GV Hospice Rallye. Over 26 years the annual motoring event has raised more than one million dollars. This year was their most successful, having raised a record-breaking $100,000!

The rally is a navigational challenge on sealed roads and all kinds of vehicles are welcome to participate, from vintage cars to the daily run-around.

“Almost everyone knows of Hospice and their incredible work. The community is so generous because they want to see this important after-hours service continue. The Rallye was cancelled one year due to Covid, and we came back this year and raised our largest sum yet,” said committee

member Min Innes-Irons, a classic car enthusiast who has participated in 17 rallies and served as chair for seven years.

“The Rallye committee works tirelessly to put on these events to support an important local cause. All committee members are volunteers, such as the likes of Bill Parsons, who drives the Rallye,” said Min. “Families and the next generation are all encouraged to take part. It’s a great deal of fun. We aim to have a good mix of cars and people every year.”

GV Hospice Care has been supported by a range of groups ever since its inception in 1987, from bike riders to boot scooters.

The annual Skeeta Memorial Run marked 10 years of Honda postie bike adventures this year, and at the same time handed over $6,400 to GV Hospice Care in June. Over the years, they have raised almost $40,000 for GV Hospice Care.

Organised by “King” Robert Palma, who says Skeeta is a social group that connects participants for a rewarding experience and local cause.

Care helped them until they had to say goodbye,” said Mr Palma.

“Skeeta is about staying connected, but it also allows people to give back to a great cause. In this case, it is very personal and rewarding going on these trips and raising money, it is also an annual catch up for us.”

It is this dedicated community support with these and many other community volunteer groups including the Shepparton and Shepparton Central Rotary Clubs, Sorophtimist, Friends of Hospice, Shepparton businesses and individual bequeaths. GV Hospices recognises this wonderful support by providing a free 24-hour, 7-day-aweek service and access to specialist equipment for those in our patients reach out in need.

GV Hospice Care’s living angels... volunteers GV Hospice supports and encourages many volunteer roles throughout Greater Shepparton and they also acknowledge that without the generosity and contribution of these people, their services would not be the same. Volunteering opportunities are varied and include patient care volunteers, roles at the opportunity shop, positions on the committee of management and fundraising.

Pa l l iat ive c a re pat ient volu nte er s (Rob, Marija, and Lynne) have all been volunteering within their unique roles for 20+ years. Their reasons for getting into such giving positions were also similar.

They all described a feeling that was like ‘someone calling them’ to reach out and help other people in need, including providing additional care to the loved ones who may be falling apart quietly on the side-lines.

Palliative care patient volunteers are like

living angels, they are client focused and do not judge a person’s situation. They are a part of a world where life limiting illness, death and grief are managed with respect and compassion.

“Sometimes it can be as simple as just sitting with someone and holding their hand, letting them know they are not alone,” said Lynne.

“I’ve been told I make a good coffee, and sometimes I take family members out for a coffee, to just give them some time off, it can be so overwhelming for family too,” said Rob “I enjoy talking with people. Everyone has their own intriguing story, sometimes I think we can be told things that their family may not have ever heard. We all must celebrate life, no matter the circumstances and the end date,” said Marija.

This is a wonderful space with great potential in an iconic location,” said GV Hospice Care president, Jeanette Powell.

Part of GV Hospice Care’s long-term plan for the new building is to lease the area to help raise money for basic maintenance, so that all other community funding can be

allocated toward direct specialised patient care.
