Facelift for major road

A NEW roundabout, road pavement, plus kerb and drainage works are earmarked for Nixon Street in Shepparton, which will soon receive a $2.1M upgrade. "This strip of Nixon Street is a busy one, used by both motorists and pedestrians, and therefore, it is important we address the ageing assets to ensure road safety is maintained," said mayor Shane Sali. "While there may be some disruptions in the area at the time of the works, the end result will ensure a safer experience for residents and visitors." The scope of the works includes demolition of the existing kerb, drainage and road pavement, installation of stormwater drainage, installation of tree cells and associated tree plantings, construction of concrete kerbing, footpaths, and pedestrian crossings, and installation of line marking and signage. Local company Mawson Constructions Pty Ltd were successful at Greater Shepparton's July council meeting, being awarded the million-dollar tender, which is to include a new roundabout on Nixon Street, between Corio and Skene Street. Works are expected to commence Monday, August 1, with completion scheduled for December 2022, weather permitting.

THERE is a fine tradition of literary writing and talent in Greater Shepparton, and it all began with a gentleman by the name of Joseph Furphy, who wrote under the pseudonym, Tom Collins almost 150 years ago. Working for twenty years alongside his brother, John at the famous foundry, Joseph spent his evenings writing into the night. In 1903, he published, Such is Life, a novel that would go on to be one of the country’s pioneering literary works. In 1992, The Furphy Literary Awards was established in honour of Joseph Furphy and in its quest “to promote and extend the tradition of storytelling,” it has become one of the most prestigious (and lucrative) awards of its type in the country. This year’s Furphy Literary Awards ceremony, open short story competition, was held at the Shepparton Art Museum on Saturday, July 23 and the Junior and Youth poetry and short story award winners were announced on Sunday July 24 at the Shepparton library. Six hectare glasshouse opens

“AND in the process, increase employment in the Goulburn Valley region on this site to over 170 people, and we think that is worth celebrating.” The glasshouse stands seven metres in height and uses world-leading technology to control every aspect of the environment. Having the means to control sunlight, water, carbon dioxide, temperature and pests ensures Flavorite can deliver premium fresh produce 12 months of the year. The development was made possible through the State Government’s Regional Jobs Funds and Victorian Business Growth Fund, established in partnership with Aware Super and Spirit Super.

“Through our $250 million Growth Fund, we have effectively provided the opportunity to take an equity share and also to provide a low-interest loan. So, we’re effectively converting cash to an asset for the state, whether it be a loan or an equity share,” explained Treasurer Tim Pallas. The Fund invests on Victorian businesses to expand their organisations, achieving better social

and environmental outcomes and boosting jobs. Treasurer Pallas said Victoria is now a bigger agricultural producer than Queensland, supported by agricultural projects of this nature. “Victoria is three percent of the landmass of the nation, we now produce more agricultural produce than Queensland does, which is quite a stellar achievement,” he said.

“It also shows that we’re the food bowl of the nation, and the only way that we can maintain that reputation is through increasing ways of efficient delivery of agriculture.” The latest construction takes Flavorite’s total production under glass from 58 hectares to 64 hectares, with plans for continued growth.

Making children’s lives better By Deanne Jeffers HE has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of children locally, and now Paul Archer of Natrad Batteries needs a hand to continue his tremendous work. In addition to running his own business, Paul has raised $668,000 to the GV Health’s children ward, and thousands more supporting Give Me 5 For Kids, the Kiwanis and Rushworth SES. “I thought it was extraordinary that SES volunteers could be working at four in the morning, say cutting someone out of a car that’s been in an accident, and would have to spend time during the week cooking barbecues to raise money to help people,” he said. Looking to the future, Paul needs to raise money to retain the 260x186mm

Paul aspires to one day have his own charity foundation. Great medical recognition for the GV By Deanne Jeffers MEDICAL professionals across the Goulburn Valley were well represented at the 2022 Victorian Rural Health Awards (VRHA), which acknowledge the vast spectrum of excellence in healthcare as well as lifetime dedication to servicing rural communities. Dr James Teh from Rich River Health Group was one of six doctors to receive the Length of Service Award. Following medical school at Melbourne University, Dr Teh completed an internship in Bairnsdale and later met and fell in love with a country girl from Bendigo. “I was fortunate to do my rural generalist training in England, where I learnt obstetrics and anaesthesia. We returned to Australia, and I accepted a job in Echuca, where we’ve been ever since and where we raised our children.” Dr Teh said he loves working and living in a small community, where he can provide “complete medical care” to patients. He is enjoying training future rural generalists, of which his son is in medical school training to follow in his father’s footsteps. Shepparton’s Dr Viyaj Raj from Healthy M i nd S olut ions (H M S) re ceived t he Outstanding Contribution by a Rural Medical Specialist. Dr Raj completed the final years of psychiatry training in Shepparton and started HMS here in 2021, familiar to the needs to the area. Stroke survivors regain touch with SENSe Therapy IMAGINE for a moment not being able to feel the weight of a pen in your hand, the grasp of a tool at work nor the warmth of a loved one’s touch. Sadly, for around 200,000 Australian stroke victims every year, the loss of touch sensation is a devasting reality. A ground-breaking and world class program developed by researchers at La Trobe University in Melbourne, however, has made significant inroads into helping stroke patients regain their sense of touch. SENSe Therapy, or study of the Effectiveness of Neurorehabilitation, has recently been launched across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia involving universities and health care providers. Delivered from four specialist SENSe therapy centres and from eight healthcare networks, the innovative treatment, ‘Helps to reprogram the brain so that people again know when they are touching objects, can recognise textures, and know where their hand is in space,” says Professor Leanne Carey, program lead at La Trobe University. The six-week treatment is delivered by specifically trained physiotherapists and occupational therapists and works to exploit the brain’s capacity to adapt and learn new skills giving stroke survivors improved sensory functionality. When a stroke patient loses their sense of touch, confidence and independence can quickly erode, but with a growing number

Major concern for biosecurity FOOT sanitation baths are being rolled out in international airports to stop a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in Australia, which could cost the country $50B over 10 years if multiple states are affected according to ABARES research models. Federal Member for Nicholls, Sam Bi rrel l, has crit icised t he Federal G overn ment’s handling over FM D biosecurity threat, saying that they have had weeks to prevent transmission into Australia. “T he threat of this disease will have catastrophic results on the food production industries in Australia, and by extension, the economy, Australian families and the cost of food.” Mr Birrell said. Last week he and Shadow Minister for Trade and Tourism, the Hon. Kevin Hogan, met with leading dairy and meat processors in the Goulburn Valley, who

highlighted the importance of additional biosecurity measures to protect primary production. “In the state of Victoria alone, a total of 146,000 people are employed in agricultural production and food manufacturing. “Victoria exports $11.4 billion of food and $3.1 billion of animal fibre annually. Felicity and her mechanic-by-trade husband Shane are well-known in the speedway scene, having competed around the country bringing home trophies and awards back to Shepparton. Their sons – Oliver aged six and Nate aged three – are already proving to share their parents' passion, with Oli racing quarter midgets from age five, and Nate showing a keen interest in cars. Felicity began racing six years ago and competes in both ladies and open competitions. Recently she received the President's Award and Drivers Choice Award at Speedway Wangaratta's presentation night. "The drivers chose who their most respected driver was. It was so cool and one of the coolest trophies I've got, because to think my peers are thinking the same thing about me is incredible," said Felicity. Felicity has had multiple feature wins this season, including Queen of the Murray winner, Most Consistent, Sports Sedan Champion, Darren Levy Memorial Winner, and many more. After winning her first race in Tasmania last year, Felicity went on to be Team Australia's first selection to compete against Team New Zealand. From all their victories, a competition

the Roycroft's won't forget is the 2019 Australian Street Stock Championships when Felicity went into labour with their youngest. "We were in Queensland for the event. People travel from all over Australia for the National Title, and they were the first people to meet Nate, before my own family," recalls Felicity. "Shane raced the first race, and he popped a tyre when he was in the lead. I was watching over livestream in hospital and the commentators were talking about me and the baby – it was pretty cool," she said. Now raising the next generation of racers, neither Shane nor Felicity are showing any sign of slowing down. Determined to share her passion, Felicity is implementing a buddy program through the club to encourage young and female racers to take up racing and stick at it. "Some little words of encouragement can be the difference between sticking at something or giving it up," she said. Wangaratta Speedway president, Kenneth Mankey wanted to thank Felicity for her help over the season. "Everyone knows of Felicity Roycroft, but what they don't know is the stuff she does behind the scenes from working on the front gate, helping in the canteen during a race meeting for a race she's in, to helping the quarter midget kids, to trophy presentations – she is a full package deal," he said.

Council adopted an updated Shepparton Sports City Master Plan to guide future development at the site and better respond to changing sporting trends. The updated Master Plan provides a strategic guide and addresses the condition of the current facilities, traffic, parking and pedestrian connections, and landscaping around the precinct.

International Engagement Strategy

Council endorsed the revised International Engagement Strategy to further enhance the economic and cultural prosperity of the region. The strategy outlines opportunities for international trade, education and tourism to build relationships and facilitate business growth.

TICKETS are on sale today for a special event where locals will hear from esteemed Australian cyclist, Anna Meares OAM. Anna is regarded as one of the greatest Australian cyclists of all time and she made Olympic history in Rio during the 2016 Games, being the first and only Aussie athlete from any sport to have ever won individual medals at four consecutive Olympic Games. During her 15-year career, Anna Meares collected 18 gold medals and 10 bronze at Olympic, World and Commonwealth levels. She was Australia’s flag bearer and team captain at Rio, she joined Channel 7’s commentary team for the Toyko Olympics 2020/1, a position she has also filled for the Santos Tour Down Under since 2017. In retirement from sport, Anna pursued many passions including foster care, charitable endeavours and she will be strongly present in the team for Australia in 2022, as the general manger for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry have partnered with GV BRaIN to present an evening with Anna Meares on Wednesday, August 17, from 6pm at The Woolshed at Emerald Bank. Changes to rubbish collection KERBSIDE rubbish is changing under the State Government’s new ‘Waste and Recycling Policy,’ which will introduce targets to divert waste from landfill, increase the recovery of glass and other recyclable materials, and aid recovery of compostable material that is currently going into red-lid bins. Presently, Council diverts around 54 percent of landfill waste, and 70 percent of what is going into red-lid bins is made up of recyclable products, food waste and garden organics. Following community consultation, Council endorsed changes that will see a fourth, purple-lid bin introduced to collect glass, which will be emptied monthly. Food and garden organics (green-lid) will be collected weekly, the red-lid landfill bin will be collected fortnightly, and the yellowlid recycling bin will continue to be emptied fortnightly (alternate week to landfill). “It is important that we all make an effort to reduce landfill waste generation and work together to increase waste diversions. This will not only be good for the environment, but also provide significant financial benefits for the community in the long run,” said mayor Shane Sali. He said removing glass from recycling and changing the frequency of bins would reduce

BENALLA V MANSFIELD After putting up competitive efforts in recent weeks that included a come-from-behind win at Tatura Park in round 13, the Benalla Saints struggled last weekend. They appeared to be missing a few senior bodies including ex-AFL player Jarrod Waite. If he is back, that will straighten up the Saints and give them a much-needed target in their forward line. Michael Rheese, Jake Pallpratt, Christopher Welsh, Samuel Harris and Cameron Symes (four goals last weekend) will be looking to continue their good form. For Mansfield, coach Chad Owens would be looking for a four-quarter effort from his players. Owens would’ve been slightly disappointed by last week’s second half against the Shepparton Bears. They were outscored in the second half. Tom McDonagh, Frazer Dale, Jack Hutchins, James Herridge and Tim Costigan will be hoping to lead the visitors to an important win to take them a step closer to the September action. Tip: Mansfield.

TATURA V ROCHESTER

Hamish Rowlands, Anthony Andronaco, Edward Lindon, Tyler Bell and Mitchell Brett will be important as they look to replicate their second half form last weekend that saw them outscore the more fancied Mansfield. The Swans didn’t win any quarters last weekend but were still gallant against the bigger bodied Euroa. If the likes of Bryden Squire, Kurtis Dixon, Isaiah Jones, Will Dwyer and Tyreece Collison can win enough ball to get it to their forwards then the Swans can kick enough goals. Footy stalwart reaches 300 games By Deanne Jeffers THE weekend saw footy legend, Lincoln Wellington from Tatura Football and Netball Club (TFNC) play his milestone 300th senior match for Tatura. Since joining the club, Lincoln has earned many accolades, including captain of the senior team in years ‘04, ‘05, ‘06, ‘09, ‘10, ‘12, and 2013; four best and fairest awards, and he has been

described as one of the top talents in the league. Linc is currently on track to break TFNC’s record for most senior games played, a record that is currently held by Fred McMahon. It will certainly be another day of celebration if Linc gets out on the ground this round for his 301st game, in time before the Bulldogs play at home in Round 16 at Tatura Park in August.
