Shepparton set to “illuminate” at exciting festival coming this March SHEPPARTON will light up at the end of the month with an exciting new major event that is set to join the 2022 Shepparton Festival program.

The SAM Precinct and Victoria Lake Park will come to life for ‘Illuminate,’ a t wo-day celebration of the new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) and the region’s creativity, innovation, and perseverance.

Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said 2022 was shaping up to be a landmark year. FOLLOW I NG a population boom in Shepparton North, Greater Shepparton City Council is now preparing a Structure Plan to guide the future development of the area.

This is long overdue according to Pat & Tina’s BP Service Station owner, Joe Di Conza.

“This end of Shepparton has been neglected. More and more houses are going up each week, but where is the infrastructure to support this?” said Joe. “So much has been spent on continuous redevelopment of the CBD, but what’s really needed is the construction of services out here, maintenance of Council land and a clear plan about how we will support the population increase.”

The Shepparton North Activity Centre (SNAC) was identified in the ‘Commercial Activity Centres Strategy, November 2015’ (CACS) as a sub-regional activity centre, the same status as Riverside Plaza and the Mooroopna CBD in the retail hierarchy of the Greater Shepparton Planning Scheme.

The SNAC comprises land between Ford

Road and Hawkins Street on the eastern side of the Goulburn Valley Highway (Numurkah Road). It services a large catchment in Shepparton North as well as a broader area stretching as far north as southern New South Wales.

The Planning Scheme considered that further expansion and concentration of retail and commercial facilities may be required in the future to serve the growing population of Shepparton North. With this in mind, a Structure Plan is required to help guide the Shepparton North Activity Centre (SNAC).

The Structure Plan will guide the future development of the SNAC for predominantly retail and commercial purposes, while ensuring that it provides appropriate connections to surrounding commercial, recreational and residential areas in the area.

It considers the implications and opportunities for Shepparton North in terms of development (e.g. industrial, commercial and residential uses), movement and access and the analysis of projections for economic growth.

But ultimately, this event was about bringing us all together to share and celebrate our culture. Much like Treaty itself.”

“The Rushworth-Murchison Trail will provide a free, safe, and accessible space for locals and support local investments such as carparks, public toilets, and playgrounds.”

Brick by brick ONE by one the old Shepparton Hotel goes down.

Some speculation over the responsibility of the demolition and the bill have arisen recently, as the building is quietly pulled back down to earth.

Business owner, David Parente from Selective Demolitions, said that the works have been commissioned and will be paid for by the owners of the property.

David was contacted last year concerning

the need to demolish what was left of the dilapidated hotel.

Last July, Council declared the Hotel a risk to life and property following reports that bricks were being removed from the internal walls. Since the building’s structural integrity was assessed, no effort was made to stabilise the façade on the roadside.

Throughout the demolition, WorkSafe and the Greater Shepparton City Council

have been onsite to determine that the works are being done safely and time efficiently.

“It’s got to be one of the worst jobs we’ve ever done,” David said. “But I’ve always liked a bit of a challenge.”

Selective Demolitions have over 20 years' experience. They were the company tasked with moving the grandstand at Shepparton Showgrounds some years ago.

“When I got the call about the job, I

went out to the Hotel and had a look – I never take on a job the first day I see it. I slept on it, I came back, and I slept on it some more. A lot of people overthink these things, but we always find a way.”

“If the building were further from the road, it would take days to clear. But because the boundary is right on the roadside, we will pluck the bricks to the top of the first floor and then excavate the site.”

Autumn water pulse set for the Goulburn

By Kelly Lucas THROUGHOUT January, The Adviser had been receiving calls about low levels of water, poor water flow and black water being spotted along the Goulburn River between Murchison and Mooroopna. So, The Adviser made the call to Goulburn-Murray Water to see if we could find out any more information and when some water may be released.

“The flows being released downstream of Goulburn Weir are meeting a standing order for environmental flows from the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GBCMA). As well as meeting environmental targets, the flows are scaled to supply irrigation, domestic and stock use, and Shepparton’s water supplies,” said Goulburn Murray Water River Operations coordinator, Bob Knowles.

“The flow regime of between 700 and 1000ML/d will remain until we need to deliver Inter- Valley Trade (IVT) flows at

Emerging as a leader

By Kelly Lucas S I N C E 2 014 , L i f t O f f E du c at io n Scholarships have supported more than 100 local students into post-secondary education by helping to overcome financial and other barriers to their education dreams.

Lift Off Education Scholarship recipient Shaban Sulejman has made the most out of his opportunities by completing a Master of Science (physics), he has created innovative technology, has become an undergraduate teacher, and has taken on leadership roles in the science sector, at The University of Melbourne.

“The scholarship has had a significant impact on my personal and academic life.

It has also offered me the opportunity to have invaluable interactions to present my work and tell my story, with the hopes of potentially inspiring others. Moreover, I was able to connect with the community w it h ave nu e s of g r ou n d - b r e a k i n g scientific research that can present new opportunities for the Goulburn Valley,” said Shaban.

As a part of Shabans Masters research project he developed two new imaging techniques known as ghost edge detection and ghost phase imaging. T hey are innovative approaches to capturing photos of objects without using an ordinary camera and can capture photos of objects using light that is invisible to us.

Council seeking community feedback on waste and glass collection GREATER Shepparton City Council is seeking community feedback on kerbside waste and glass collection. It is important to have your say when it could potentially change the frequency of when the current bins are collected.

As part of the State Government’s Rec ycl i ng Vic tor ia pol ic y, C ou nci l is seeking to incorporate an alternative measure to remove glass from the current recycling bin and make changes to the frequency of kerbside bin collections to reduce waste going into landfill.

“Changes to glass recycling are being introduced across the state and we want to know people’s thoughts on these changes.

Currently, it is difficult to separate glass

from other recyclable materials, and glass items often break in mixed recycling bins. Making changes will help improve recycling and the amount of waste going to landfill,” said Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe.

By Kelly Lucas KAZI Connect is a new initiative at St Paul's African House that will work to address the many barriers faced by African-Australians in gaining employment, forming strong relationships with local employers, and creating customised strategies for people to find and maintain suitable employment.

Kazi Connect community worker, Furaha Baguma, spoke of the importance of helping the people from the African community find employment within the area of work they aspire to do. She also mentioned the need for finding the right employers that can be sensitive to employing diverse cultures.

"We are seeking empathetic and supportive

workplaces to facilitate mentoring relationships within employment arrangements. If you are an employer in the Greater Shepparton region that can offer not just seasonal or short-term positions and could provide a range of services and would be interested in offering our African people a career path, then please get in touch," said Kazi Connect community worker, Furaha.

"I see the challenges our people face with unfavourable work conditions. We all have dreams to work in areas other than farming or picking jobs," said African community member, Rebecca Awan.

Parliament Wrap Up

In State Parliament last week, I raised several issues important to the people of the Shepparton electorate.

GREATER SHEPPARTON SCHOOL BUSES

My office has been inundated with complaints by parents of children from Greater Shepparton Secondary College who have been left behind because of overcrowding on school buses. There have been many reports of more than 70 students travelling on a bus licenced to carry 54 passengers.

This is extremely dangerous for students and makes practicing social distancing impossible.

Clearly there are insufficient buses to safely transport our children to and from school and I called on State Government to increase the services of the School Bus Program. I have also written to Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll to reiterate the need for action, as well as to Premier Daniel Andrews and Education Minister James Merlino to make them aware of the situation.

CURRAWA FIRE BRIGADE STATION

The Currawa Fire Brigade has needed a replacement fire station for many years, yet no funding has been provided by the Government to build a fit-for-purpose fire station for the volunteers and the local community.

Geelong Car Revival this weekend

THE Geelong Revival Motoring Festival is an actionpacked motoring festival held on Geelong’s picturesque waterfront. The Currawa station is too small to house new tankers coming online and has no changeroom facilities to cater for the increase in female volunteer membership. There is no storage for breathing apparatus equipment and no room for volunteers to conduct meetings.

UNUSED PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL SITES The closing of the four public secondary schools in Shepparton and Mooroopna to create the Greater Shepparton Secondary College has left three school campuses empty and neglected.

They are slowly becoming an eyesore in the community, and I asked Education Minister James Merlino to ensure regular maintenance is carried out at the former McGuire College, Wanganui Park Secondary College and Mooroopna Secondary College sites and for him to also inform the community of the Government’s future intentions for each of the sites.

By Stephanie Holliday A name synonymous with strong women in business, Sandra Harris has proved with almost a-decade stronghold in the mining industry, that being female and hailing from a regional city is no barrier to remarkable success.

As corporate services director of All West Engineering and Maddison Wright Engineering, Sandra and her business partner Paul Harris had a lightbulb moment in 2009 which quickly grew to become a Goulburn Valley success story of epic proportions.

Paul Harris identified a gap in the mining industry and together they began a journey whereby they matched high skilled workers from the Goulburn Valley with positions in Western Australia’s mining regions, creating life-changing opportunities for their employees and impressing the mining industry with such a high calibre of tradespeople. Sandra and Paul later created a strategic partnership with Heath Wright and Conor Egan forming Maddison Wright Engineering and Proform Industrial setting up Engineering Workshops across Victoria.

“We have grown from having just five employees to over 250, across four states. We may not have started with a distinct strategy, but we have flourished thanks to our drive, passion and vision shared by all partners,” said Sandra.

Sandra may be the only woman in a leadership team of mostly men, but that is a non-issue.

“There’s been a big shift towards women in business and as leaders in recent years. I think the media has played a key role in this, women are being recognised for perhaps the different dynamic in leadership they bring to the table and it’s becoming apparent that equality across the board is in every organisation’s best interest,” Sandra said.

Sandra now heads a group of 6 companies with business interests in the mining, engineering, and tech spaces. She works daily with a dynamic group of business partners.

“I have been fortunate enough in my business partnerships to work with an incredibly talented and inspiring group of entrepreneurs, that all support and value each other’s dynamics.”

As the groups ventures continue to grow, Sandra has a key message for everyone in business, whether they are finding their growth to be stagnant or are just starting out.

“My message to anyone scaling their business, small or large, is to be transparent with your team. Especially internally, as it builds trust and increases engagement. When you have an engaged and dynamic team, they are content and the results of that is efficiency and a desire to achieve greater outcomes.”

THE trade industry is the second largest in Australia, yet women make up one percent of building trades countrywide.

This number is increasing, and more young women like Shana Brand, fourth-year painting apprentice with Shepparton’s Colour Your Castle, are choosing the paintbrush and measuring tape over scissors or shears.

“I started my apprenticeship late because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. At school we had to do a TAFE course. I tried hair and beauty because it interested me, but I really liked painting and I thought a trade would give me better career options and more freedom.”

“For a long time, girls were taught to pick what was easy or what they knew. You don’t know what you’re getting into when you pick a trade, but you have a lot to gain.”

THE opportunity to call the shots in business and offer employment opportunities to other women, at Shepparton’s only all-female pharmacy has been a game-changer for Reid’s Pharmacy co-owners Kate Boswell and Leticia Keady.

They met at university before Leticia followed pharmacy to Broome and Kate to Melbourne. Both country girls, a year ago they bought Reid’s Pharmacy together from original owner, Steve Reid. Managing the pharmacy through Covid has been a whirlwind, but both Leticia and Kate are proud of their team, and they have kept the business alive by providing great service and good advice.

Kate always loved chemistry at school. She remembers a TV ad that clicked for her. It said “’Pharmacy, it’s good people science.” Kate didn’t have to sit in a lab all day, she wanted to be able to interact with the people that her chemistry skills could help.

“Going through uni, classes were like 70 percent female. There are way more females doing pharmacy, but somehow it ends up being more males in leadership positions,” Leticia reflected.

Recently married, Leticia admits she sought advice from Steve before buying the business and starting a family.

KATIE Singleton-Foley is the clinic manager at Fur Life Shepparton.

She began working with animals after having kids, by pursuing a vet nurse traineeship. Katie’s passion has seen her help animals in Australia and in Cambodia, where she lived for eight years.

Dr Jen Barker is always up for a challenge, and the physical demands of chiropractic, and barriers faced by women, have driven her to improve and succeed. Having a baby has been a game-changer.

“Being in this industry, a contractor and having a baby I found it really tough mentally, physically and financially, particularly during Covid. Physically adjusting patients whilst 36 weeks pregnant with a face shield and mask on was definitely a challenging experience.”

“I am lucky enough to have a husband and parents who are very supportive and who understood just how vulnerable having a baby made me feel in relation to work. I was also very lucky to have a supportive workplace whereby I could start back at work at my own pace.”

Dr Yvette LcCerf was always interested in health, but her passion for chiropractics began playing netball.

“One day we were playing, and all of a sudden I became stiff, and I couldn’t throw the ball,” she said. A football player on her team helped her by making some adjustments. “He really kicked off my interest.”

“Working in a male dominated industry has its challenges. We have clients ask for male doctors, saying that they need someone ‘strong’ to fix them. They’re always assured that the female doctors are just as strong, and they’re always shocked when we give them results beyond what they thought possible.”

Dr Julia Bianco started in kinesiology before chiropractic, she’s taken five gap years, failed university, and still has two “expensive pieces of paper,” and a great career to show for it.

Julia strongly believes, “If I’m not impressing myself, I’m not impressing anyone.”

“I convinced myself that I wasn’t the smart girl, that I could only do general maths, not maths methods. That I can do creative subjects like visual arts, but not the sciences.”
