By Steve Hutcheson AUTUMN rains have put a smile on a lot of faces and a patina of green on a lot of paddocks around the region.

With rainfalls being recorded over 40mm in one day in parts of the region, the monthly average of 28.8mm over the last thirty years has been well and truly exceeded.

With the rainfall being a steady drizzle rather than a heavy downpour, the region has been spared the problem of flooding however rivers are likely to rise over coming days as the rainfalls in upstream areas work their way into the waterways.

Unlike parts of New South Wales, Queensland and eastern Victoria where rainfalls have been up to 800mm over the period of a few days, the rainfall for the Goulburn Valley has been modest yet welcomed.

Rushworth olive farmer, Russ Knight welcomed the rains however, some stone fruit growers in the region may not be so pleased.

SAM stages a soft opening WE have all watched in anticipation, the new SAM building evolve as a work of art itself.

With the construction complete and all the green lights saying go, the building is ready for visitors with the principal tenants setting up shop.

SAM, Kaiela Arts and the Visitor Centre commenced transitioning to the new site as of 1 March. This is no mean feat, with SAM alone needing to relocate its collection comprising 4,000+ unique artworks to the new purpose-built facility over the coming months.

Kaiela Arts and the Visitor Centre on the ground floor will be fully operational from 31 March. The SAM Shop will also open on 31 March, allowing visitors to fully experience the new SAM building. Each of the three spaces is co-located, allowing visitors to move between the SAM Shop, Kaiela Arts and the Visitor Centre.

GV Health starts public aged care resident’s vaccinations GV HEALTH commenced its COVID-19 vaccination program to the public residential aged care sector last week, as part of the Commonwealth Government’s phase 1a vaccine rollout.

13 Residents at the Parkvilla Aged Care Facility at the Tatura campus of GV Health have now received their vaccinations.

“It’s wonderful to know that the COVID-19 vaccine will help us to keep our doors open for our residents and their families,” GV Health Tatura’s director of nursing, Lisa Waite, said.

This nation’s elderly population face a higher level of threat from the Coronavirus: Of the 909 deaths associated with COVID-19 in Australia, 94 percent have been people aged over 70 years, causing havoc and isolation for those who live in aged care homes.

“Not only is this our first public aged care facility to have received vaccinations, it is also our first outreach location in the GV Health vaccine hub to have begun the vaccine program,” GV Health COVID-Response executive manager, Alicia Cunningham, said last week.

“In coming days, we will vaccinate aged care residents at our other GV Health residential aged care facilities, which includes Grutzner House in Shepparton and Waranga Aged Care Hostel and Nursing Home in Rushworth.

“Now that our mobile outreach team is established, we will continue

Public aged care staff have also started receiving the COVID-19 vaccine as part of the priority 1a group at the McIntosh Centre in Shepparton which started operating as a vaccine hub last week.

Approximately 640 aged care residents across 20 public aged care facilities in the GV Health vaccine hub catchment area will be vaccinated under the GV Health COVID-19 vaccine program.

In the space in which I work, community service and welfare suppor t, there are lots of things done ‘to’ Shepparton, by people who live a long way away from the consequences of those actions. Daylight saving comes to an end

By Stephanie Holliday THIS weekend brings on the long cold winter and there are two things we need to do on Saturday night.

The first is to wind back clocks one hour giving you an extra hour of sleep-in Sunday, next up is checking our smoke alarms are in working order.

Firefighters are urging Victorians to check their smoke alarms are in good nick this weekend, even better before heading off on a trip.

Fire Rescue Commissioner Ken Block said it was equally important to test smoke alarms and clean them regularly.

“It’s no good having a smoke alarm installed if it isn’t

working – a smoke alarm that is properly maintained can save your life if there is a fire,” Commissioner Block said.

“It only takes a few minutes to clean and then test your smoke alarm by pushing the test button.”

When turning your clocks back this weekend, ensure your smoke alarms are given a good once over.

Lovell open to discussion on Liberal gender quotas

By Struan Jones THE Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell, has said she’s open to the idea of discussing quotas and ways to encourage more women into the parliament and the Liberal Party.

Ms Lovell, a member of the Liberal Party who has represented the region in the Victorian Upper House since 2002, joins a growing chorus of Coalition leaders and MPs who say the idea should be considered.

“We also have to recognise that the Liberal Party has a democratic process when it comes to preselecting candidates for an election,” she said.

“Local members here have a very strong record of supporting women.”

Ms Lovell referred to former Senator K ay Pat terson’s de s cr ipt ion of t he Goulburn Valley region as ‘The Valley of the Amazons’, making mention of a number of politicians and pre-selected candidates including Sharman Stone, Donna Petrovich, Amanda Millar, Jeanette Powell, Cheryl Hammer and even longserving member Fran Bailey in McEwan, all of whom represented the Liberal Party.

WITH the steadily rising cost of electricity, many Victorian households have already gone over to solar and are now considering adding a battery to supplement their solar PV system.

Adding a battery will enhance your solar bill savings by being able to store solar-generated electricity for use later in the day. Households may also be able to charge the battery with electricity purchased from the grid at off-peak rates for further savings on bills, although charging from solar would remain the priority.

With enough batteries and solar panels, imports from the grid can become rare events.

However, the battery’s high initial cost means that these bill savings might be cancelled out for many households. An exception is where your battery cost is subsidised which is what the Victorian Government is currently doing.

Drawing from batteries in the early evening reduces your demand on the grid at peak times, which could help your electricity network provider delay expensive capacity upgrades

(which consumers pay for indirectly).

Also, powerline voltage in some streets rises when everyone is exporting from their solar systems at the same time. If the voltage gets too high, solar systems cannot export and solar generation is wasted.

If you want to help the fight against climate change right now, then a battery doesn’t immediately reduce fossil fuel generated electricity in the grid, it simply stores energy.

To make a difference it would entail using more panels to collect more of that solar energy.

When more households install solar panels and batteries, there is greater potential to increase our use of renewable electricity in our electricity grid. In this way, at a societal level, increasing use of household batteries can actually assist in delivering more renewable energy and benefit our environment.

ISSUE WITH BRUMBY STORY Dear Editor, I wish to take issue with the final sentence of The Adviser’s article, ‘Horses on traditional land, whose culture is it anyway?’ (The Adviser, March 17) The claim that the project to develop a 300-acre property to house brumbies has stalled is incorrect.

The property has been leased, fencing is to occur next weekend, and $74,000 was raised by supporters in little over a month. Not at all unachievable.

There also could have been emphasis on other aspects that Parks Victoria do not prioritise, such as removal of noxious weeds, the NP’s acres of dead wood, track deterioration and the fact that Moira

Grass is in decline because of flooding at the wrong times of the year.

Also, the Yorta Yorta are not the traditional owners - as per a court case. The Government spins this line however.

ENJOY an evening of live music by the water when the Goulburn Vibes outdoor music event returns to Shepparton’s events calendar this Easter.

The outdoor live music event, held at Western Park, (25 Tom Collins Drive, next to the all-abilities playground and Aquamoves), was cancelled last year due to Coronavirus restrictions, however the Greater Shepparton City Council is pleased to be able to bring the event back.

Locals and visitors will be able to enjoy a session of local performers in the intimate setting of the rustic bushlands behind Victoria Park Lake this Easter weekend, Saturday, April 3.

“The first ever Goulburn Vibes was a celebration of everything local, there were talented local performers, great local vendors and our beautiful environment by the lake and the river,” Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr O’Keeffe, said.

The event is free and will feature local food vendors and a licensed bar area by local suppliers Shepparton Brewery and Chowtown. Attendees will need to bring a chair or picnic rug.

Former Mayor, Anne McCamish, is looking forward to Shepparton expanding its creative horizons. “We don’t have a creativity policy and until we do, we cannot have it included

in city planning and won’t have any funds dedicated to it. This is just the first tiny step towards having something much bigger,” said Ms McCamish.

The first step will be to establish a steering group who will filter through the community submissions that lead towards the next stages of the strategy.

Now a rite of passage for primary school aged children, Easter bonnet parades provide an opportunity for children to think creatively and work with their parents (or watch as their parents prise a superglued fluffy chicken from their palm) to bring their creative vision to fruition.

Fire Danger Period over in Hume Region THE CFA’s Fire Danger Period finished this week across District 22, 23, 24 and 12, which includes the Local Government Areas of: • Greater City of Shepparton • Benalla Rural City • Shire of Moira • Strathbogie Shire According to the latest Australian Seasonal Outlook, above average summer rainfall has led to a reduced bushfire risk for autumn.

These conditions have led to a reduced fire activity in both grasslands and forests this summer.

Much of Victoria will continue to experience milder conditions and lower bushfire potential over the coming months.

and therefore the restrictions that are in place over the peak summer period have been removed.

DCO Sullivan emphasised that while the FDP is coming to an end in some areas, it is still important to remain vigilant.

“While these restrictions will be lifted in time for Easter, we are calling on campers and landowners to ensure they remain safe around fire,” he said.

Unattended campfires continue to be a cause of concern for fire authorities and can cause significant damage if they escape.

Irrespective of restrictions that are in place, DCO Sullivan said that people are responsible for any fires they light and will be held accountable by Victoria Police for any damage that results.

GPs prevail MANY businesses have been affected

by COVID-19, possibly none more than general practitioners.

Traversing a land of uncertainty has become routine for these practices, with new rule changes and last-minute notices meaning they must adapt rapidly.

Now with 1b patients (mostly the elderly and healthcare workers) able to get vaccinated in clinics, they face new challenges with a large demand from the public to receive them.

Only two practices in Shepparton got the all-clear to administer the vaccines, Delta Medical Centre and Kialla Medical Clinic.

“Planning everything in such a short time frame has been difficult,” said practice manager of Kialla Medical Clinic, Caitlin Burns.

“W hen the gover n ment med ia released last week what clinics would be participating, we were inundated with phone calls for 3 days, which was tricky considering we hadn’t received the vaccines yet.”

It hasn’t been all negative for the clinics,

with good feedback being given by many.

No date has been set for GP’s to move forward to the next phase of patients, details of which are yet to be released by the State Government.

A sticky success

By Sarah Knight IT was a morning of cuddles and smiles as Bourchier Street Primary School’s 84 grade prep students and their favourite teddies tucked into some delicious homemade treats in celebration of the successful completion of their first term at school.

The four classes made honey joys and iced and decorated teddy bear bickies, before celebrating with a teddy bear picnic under a clear blue sky last Thursday.

co-ordinator, Maddyson Combridge, said the focus of the first term had been on building relationships and establishing “community” within the classroom.

Looking forward, Miss Combridge said, “The second term will provide our grade prep students with further insight into the broader community.

“We have several field trips planned, where we will visit local service hubs, such as the police station, fire brigade and the local IGA supermarket.”

By Sam Saracino AFTER nearly 18 months on the sidelines, it is fantastic that the weather gods have turned it on for round one of the Goulburn Valley League.

Two of the league’s fiercest rivals get the opportunity to kick start 2021 as a stand-alone game.

Both teams will have a vastly different look to their playing list from what it would have looked like in 2020.

United will be stronger and coach Rob Osborne is setting the expectations high for his players. On the other hand, Shepparton co-coaches Sam Ahmet and Ramadan Yze are optimistic about their teams hopes despite many pundits believing they will drop down the table after losses over the past 18 months.

One of the most interesting games of the opening round will be at Mansfield where the home team comes up against Mooroopna. On the other hand, the Cats have enjoyed a near perfect pre-season under new coach John Lamont.

Another intriguing match-up will be the battle between

the Shepparton Swans and Benalla.

The Saints have strengthened their playing list and it will be a baptism of fire for first year coach Jack Pallpratt.

Another a match of interest is the one at Kyabram where it makes the short trip down the road to Rochester.

The Bombers are expected to be the team to beat this year again, especially that they have added some quality to their list but the Tigers under new coach Steven Stroobants are expected to be one of the challengers.

Echuca will get the opportunity to make an early statement when it hosts Seymour in a twilight setting where it should draw a big crowd.

Seymour will be led by Ben Davey and he will make a big impact on the Lions.

In the final match, Euroa and Tatura will go into battle.

The Bulldogs will be keen to make an early statement against one of the teams that is expected to make a sharp rise up the ladder.

My tips: United, Mooroopna, Benalla, Kyabram, Echuca and Euroa.

By Sam Saracino HOW exciting for the ladies to be back on court for the first game of netball in 18 months.

It just seems so long since Seymour claimed the premiership and Jessie Barnes took the courts by storm to be named the Wellman Medallist in 2019.

No doubt the Lions, despite some key departures from their playing roster, and Barnes’ United, will still be contenders in 2021.

The Demons are most pundits pick to be at the top of the ladder at the end of the home and away.

Shepparton has added one of the most talented players in the region with Echuca United premiership netballer Tanner Edwards joining the 2019 finalist.

Across town, the Shepparton Swans are expected to be thereabouts again under the watch of playing coach Jana Bruinier.

The return of Erin Hopkins will be massive for the Swans while Klarindah Hudson is a new face to the club, joining from Murray League out Rumbalara and she is expected to have a big impact.

The Swans are at home to Benalla and they won’t be taking them lightly despite the visitors expected to finish mid-table this winter.

Mooroopna should start the season on a winning note when it makes the trip to Mansfield.

Kyabram make the short trip across to Rochester and both these teams will be eager to get their season off to a winning note.

Tatura travel across to take on Euroa in what should be a good game of netball.

The Magpies will be led by Ellie Warnock and they will be a reasonably new squad, having added at least five new players over the summer.

The Bulldogs will be a young side, but have been boosted by the inclusion of Laura Ryan who joins having played with Shepparton in 2019.

And in the final game of the round, Echuca will start favourite under the watch of former Kyabram mid-court and 2016-17 Wellman Medallist Step Vick.

They come up against a Seymour team that has lost stars Elle McDonald and Meg Grbac.

But despite their departure, the Lions still have a number of the players who led them to the 2019 title so the Murray Bombers will need to be on their game.

My tips: United, Swans, Mooroopna, Rochester, Euroa and Echuca.

Olympic athletes fire their guns in Shepparton

By Struan Jones SH EPPA RTON’S Small Bore and Air Rifle Club plays host to the 2021 Target Rifle Australia National Championships this week, with about 95 shooting athletes descending on the Pine Lodge shooting range.

The competition has also attracted members of the Tokyo Olympic team – Elise Collier, Kata Kowplos, Dane Sampson, Jack Rossiter - who will join the rest of the pack for the five-day shoot-out to determine national champions across 12 different events.

If for some of you, the words ‘rifle shooting’ bring up images of the stiff-upper lipped hunter, Van Pelt, from Jumanji, these rifles are more akin to something The

Terminator would carry.

Modern target rifles look more like bionic contraptions rather than something your grandfather’s father carried into World War Two (and thankfully for a vastly different purpose, too).

Sue Lott of the Shepparton Small Bore and Air Rifle Club, who started shooting on the family farm when she was 12 and is a former national champion herself, said the event had been a long time coming in the new COVID world.

“Some of these shooting athletes are the best in Australia, we are very lucky and we’re excited to have them here,” she said.

State Championships a roaring success

By Stephanie Holliday FOR those living in regional Victoria, the volunteers of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) live among us and come from all walks of life.

Mooroopna hosted the much-anticipated CFA/ Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) State Firefighter Championships over the past two weekends at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve.

The competition between branches has been running for more than a hundred years, with 79 senior CFA brigades and 33 junior CFA brigades competing over the course of the Championships from all across Victoria.

Peter O'Keefe, Deputy Chief Officer, Volunteers and Capability with the CFA said at the launch, "We come together in friendly manner to compete and build relationships.

It really does highlight the diversity and the

strength of our volunteers."

The 2021 Championships for the first time had all-female events taking place, with a large number of participants competing in the One Competitor and Two Competitor Marshall events.

Events at the State Championships were based on practical firefighting activities,

building fitness, team skills and capabilities while utilising hoses, hydrants and other equipment. A range of senior rural and urban events took place including the Hose and Ladder, Y Coupling and Marshall events.
