Complimentary parking comes to an end AT the end of this week, the two month long trial in complimentary parking ends. As reported in our last edition, a survey that had been conducted by council is still being evaluated however, judging from the comments on the councils Facebook page, there appears to be 100% consensus to continue with the free parking. The Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry have conducted a survey among traders alongside the council survey. Results of this will be known early next month. Continued on page 14

Over the years, business in Shepparton has been good to him as he has watched it grow from a few thousand people in those early days to the bustling metropolis that it is today.

This week, the Peter and Maria Copulos Foundation donated $20,000 to the Shepparton Search and Rescue to help them buy new equipment. Recently, the Peter and Maria Copulos Foundation donated one million dollars to the new Shepparton Art Museum and have had significant engagement

at GV Health. “Our interest is in seeing the Goulburn Valley community benefit from what we do. In this instance we were asked if we can support the important work of the Shepparton Search and Rescue to add to their capability,” said Peter Copulos. Continued on page 13

Slow down around schools WITH most schools going back over the next couple of days, Greater Shepparton City Council are reminding residents to adhere to the school zone speed limits. These 40km speed limits are in place to ensure children and pedestrians around schools are safe while crossing the

road and exiting the school gates. Director of corporate services, Chris Teitzel said, “With people having been on holiday or not having school aged children anymore, they may not be aware that school is back. Motorists need to be aware of the school zones, slow

down and take notice of school crossing supervisors. “We are simply asking motorists to take care around schools and follow the speed limits which are in place from 8am to 9:30am, and then 2:30pm to 4pm on school days.”

Lovell pursues risk management plan for super school ALL projects come with some risk, the new $120M Greater Shepparton Secondary College is no exception. The Department of Education and Training, relevant authority in this case have prepared what is an eight page inclusion into their Shepparton Education Plan that concern ‘risk management’. Local Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell submitted a freedom of Information request to the department that was at first refused. Ms Lovell took the matter to the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner and at a hearing that was decided in December, the Deputy Commissioner said in her findings, “On balance, I consider the public interest of the community being informed about the way in which the agency performs its statutory functions weighs in favour of release, where disclosure of the risks identified will likely contribute to greater public scrutiny, and community participation in the implementation of the Shepparton Education Plan.”

The department was given 14 days to lodge a review of the deputy commissioner’s findings with VCAT which they have done. The follow up hearing is on February 17. Wendy Lovell said, ”Families in Greater Shepparton have a right to be fully informed

on the risks associated with this unpopular and controversial super school and I will fight to have this information released.” Ms Lovell also expressed concern at the shortfall of the estimated funding required for the project.

The new college will accommodate between 2,700 to 3,000 students and is being created by merging four existing public secondary schools. Demolition works on the current site will commence in February 2020.

Raising the bar with $31,610 relief funds COU NC I L LOR and former mayor of Greater Shepparton City Council, Kim O’Keeffe over a period of a few days, put together an event to raise funds that will be used to support victims of the Gippsland bushfires. The Peppermill Inn, provided the venue along with a hefty donation of $2,000 plus bar donations while a number of anonymous donors put $1,000 and $2,000 into the pot.

The event was made that much more successful with some well known local artists, including Adam Thompson, Nigel Parsons, Karen Groves and Dave Shelley and Jamie Lea providing the entertainment. Kim said, “The money is going to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund with whom we have had a lot of contact over the last few weeks. We are confident that it will get to where it is meant to go.”

WE often read about it in the news and perhaps tend not to pay much attention unless it occurs closer to home. Celebrities that we all know, Muhammad Ali, Michael J Fox, Alan Alda, Neil Diamond, Billy Connolly are just a few of the well known international celebrities whom have been afflicted with Parkinson’s disease. According to the Brain Foundation, approximately 40,000 Australians or about two people in 1000 may be affected. A small non-profit organisation in Shepparton, Darnley Montgomery Foundation, was formed less than two years ago with the intention of providing an ongoing movement

disorder support nurse to assist people in our community who have Parkinson’s. The organisation also funds the enrolment cost of two nurses in the post graduate unit in Parkinson’s care at the Australian College of Nursing. The foundation is open to suggestions for other programs or services that it might work towards to improve the daily life of people with movement disorders. ND QUEENSLA FRUIT FLY Y COMMUNIT UPDATE Hot spots The following locations are ‘hot spots’ from which new Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) populations will, if not managed, spread later in the season. These sites are in urban locations and include: • 2 sites in Barooga • 1 site in Cobram • 3 sites in Echuca • 2 sites in Kyabram • 1 site in Mooroopna • 1 site in Numurkah • 1 site in Yarrawonga If QFF in these spots are not managed effectively they will spread from these sites into the rest of the region immediately surrounding them. After that, newer generations will emerge from these flies and they too will spread in a ripple effect further out into commercial crops nearby in autumn – just when most commercial crops in the GMV ripen. Project Field Officers are currently deployed to assist landholders reduce QFF populations in these areas. Home gardeners and property owners are reminded that responsibility for ownership and management of fruit trees and vegetables sits with them.

Are you committed? Government authorities and commercial growers are committed to stopping the spread of fruit fly on land they own or manage. What are you doing to prevent fruit fly infesting the fruit trees and vegetables in your home garden? Everyone can enjoy their own fresh produce if you make the commitment to stop the spread of fruit fly in your garden, but remember, it involves more than hanging a trap in a fruit tree. A fruit fly trap is primarily a monitoring device to alert you to the presence of fruit fly in your garden. Be sure you recognise what a QFF looks like. Inspect your fruit and vegetables for sting marks and dispose of infested and fallen fruit correctly (put into closed plastic bag and ‘cook’ it in the sun for 5-7 days to kill the maggots before placing in your bin). Netting is the single most effective measure to prevent QFF stinging your fruit and vegetables. Fruit Fly baiting can dramatically reduce QFF populations if done correctly. Your trees should be pruned to a manageable height so you can pick all the fruit. Pick your fruit early, don’t leave it to over-ripen or rot on your trees. WATER WASTAGE Dear Editor, OVER coming weeks, many community members will drag themselves to another round of consultations and meetings relating to water policy, this time for those being conducted by MurrayDarling Basin Plan Inspector-General Mick Keelty. They will attend in the hope that this time someone will have the courage to ‘call a spade a spade’ and reveal the terrible waste of water and poor policy that is crippling Aussie food producers, especially throughout Southern NSW and Northern Victoria. I have attended numerous meetings and rallies and it is hard not to get disenchanted with the process. Most recently, I was at the Finley meeting as part of the socioeconomic inquiry being conducted at considerable taxpayer expense ($3.2 million) by Robbie Sefton and her panel. At the meeting experienced local farmers and businessmen expressed their grave concerns about the damage being done in our community by the Basin Plan. Yet upon reading the interim report from the Independent Assessment these comments and concerns were downplayed. I worry that the true extent of the social and economic damage will be watered down in the inquiry’s reports, as the interim report has not filled me with any confidence. Will they be ignored, like just about everything we try to tell politicians about the Basin Plan and what it is doing to us? So is it any wonder that regional communities have lost faith in government and ‘independent’ reports. I only hope that Inspector-General Keelty can start the long process of restoring some faith, and help our communities believe that there are people who care for the future of our region and are prepared to take a tough stance to protect it. Dear Editor, THE last few weeks have been a disaster for Australia with the loss of forests, farmland, farm stock and fodder, homes and other structures. Now we are trying to estimate the loss of our native fauna and guessing our future losses due to, lack of food and water plus injuries. Also the human toll includes deaths, injury and most likely future breakdowns in family structures. We hear so much about the Australian spirit that crosses all known boundaries and religions when fires, floods, tsunamis, volcanic activities and earthquakes strike. In third world countries we see people digging with their bare hands in their attempt to save total strangers. Amid all this turmoil I find it strange that, here in Victoria, we are preparing to partake in the annual sport (bloodbath) of duck shooting. This ‘sport’ is where people don camouflage outfits, use duck lures then shotguns to blast these inoffensive birds from the skies. Aboriginal Street Art project continues TWO significant female elders from Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation (YYNAC) are to feature on a large mural to be painted on the exterior wall of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Welsford St. The late Aunty Geraldine Briggs and the late Aunty Elizabeth Morgan are both highly regarded Yorta Yorta Elders and were heavily involved in the advocating of rights and support for Aboriginal people. The mural will be painted by returning artist Matt Adnate, who has also painted the murals on the Goulburn Valley Water wall. M r Adnate is regarded highly amongst the local Aboriginal community due to his previous work and dealings with locals. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Seema Abdullah, said she was excited that the next mural of the Aboriginal Street Art Project would recognise two significant female Aboriginal leaders. “These two ladies did so much for their

WHILE there are hundreds of thousands of people offering support, both physically and financially towards the recovery process from the bushfires, there is always an element of low-lifes who try to take advantage of the situation. There have been reports of people setting up fake collections while others have stolen collection containers and their contents or by preying on people in need. The Master Electricians Australia (MEA) issued a timely warning against unqualified electricians offering to do low cost check ups or repair work. Malcolm Richards, the CEO of MEA said, “Often people are

unaware of the need to conduct an electrical safety check following an event like a bushfire but even homes partially heatdamaged can suffer damage to wiring.’ “It’s important residents or homeowners realise that electrical work in the home is work that must be done by licenced electricians. Paying for this service ensures local businesses and the local community get back on their feet as soon as possible.’’ Residents returning to bushfire-ravaged areas can get help to find a licenced electrician by calling 1300 889 198. 1 1) WE MADE IT… It was such a surreal feeling to be standing at Everest Base Camp with one of my best friends, Ash Millman. A moment I will never forget. 2) NEARLY THERE… The day we reached Everest Base Camp was a long day of trekking, taking over 8 hours. 3) GOLDEN HOUR… Another incredible sunset taken from Gorak Shep at an altitude of 5,164m. 4) STUNNING VIEWS… Trekking all day every day wasn’t so bad when we had beautiful views like this. 5) SUNSET VIEWS… This summit of this mountain, Ama Dablam, is 6,812m above sea level.

LEAVING the beautiful Gokyo Lakes was hard, but exciting, as it meant we were on our way to Everest Base Camp. We continued on and most days we walked around 15km on average, but due to the altitude making it difficult, it took nearly the whole day. We trekked for three days before being reunited with Ash in a village called Dingboche. It’s situated at 4,410m above sea level and had beautiful views of a mountain called Ama Dablam, with a peak of 6,812m. Ash’s ankle had improved significantly although was still quite bruised. She used her trekking poles to take some pressure off her ankle and improve stability. Considering she had two torn ligaments she was doing very well! The next day we continued on for a tough day, gaining 600m in elevation. The whole trek we kept seeing lots of helicopters flying past every day. Some were sight-seeing and some were rescue helicopters. It was quite concerning knowing a lot of them would be rescuing those who had severe altitude sickness, and that it could happen to us at any moment. We finally reached Lobuche where we spent the night at 5,030m. It was one of the busiest teahouses that we stayed at. Majority of the teahouses run on solar power and are dependant on weather. If it had been a cloudy day then most places wouldn’t let you charge camera batteries or power banks as it’ll drain all their power. We also had to pay for charging, either per hour or per device, depending on the location. The next morning was the day we would attempt to reach Everest Base Camp. We had a big day ahead of us, so we started our trek early. We walked outside to see that fresh snow had fallen overnight. The first section of the trek for the day was a 3 hour walk to a village called Gorak Shep. This is where you spend the night after you return from Everest Base Camp. The terrain was extremely rocky, and we walked right next to the Khumbu Glacier. The views were absolutely insane, with huge peaks towering over us everywhere. We reached Gorak Shep, had a very quick snack break and had left again by 10am. Although we only gained 200m in altitude from Gorak Shep (5,164m) to Everest Base Camp (5,364m), the return trip took over 5 hours. The air was so thin, we struggled to catch our breath and keep our heart rate down. We continued walking beside the Khumbu Glacier until the last little stretch where we had to actually walk across it.

We took our time walking on the glacier as it was very icy and slippery, although most of it was covered in rock and dirt. Then the moment we had all been waiting for! We finally made it to Everest Base Camp. It was such a surreal feeling to actually be standing there. Our whole group had made it too, all 10 of us. We took photos and spent time just sitting, taking in all the incredible peaks around us. It was also really cool to explore the glacier as well and see the interesting ice formations. We only spent about half an hour there before we had to leave. Everyone was so exhausted once we arrived back at Gorak Shep, after hiking over 8 hours above 5,000m. There was a gorgeous sunset that night which created a golden glow over the nearby peaks, including Mount Everest. I braved the cold for about 5 minutes to get a few quick photos before rushing back inside. Overnight it got down to -15 degrees Celsius which was the coldest it had been the whole trek. We slept in just about every piece of clothing we had with us, in a sleeping bag, with a blanket on top. Going to the toilet in the middle of the night wasn’t much fun. The trek back down was much quicker as the more we descended, the easier it became to breathe. Heading back down did put a lot more pressure on our knees but we found using our trekking poles helped a lot. We descended 1,724m in two days back down to Namche Bazaar. We rewarded ourselves with a visit to the bakery, which was a rare luxury on the trek. After two more days we arrived back in Lukla, ready to catch our flight back to Ramechhap the next morning. It was sad to be leaving but we were so excited to get back to civilisation in Kathmandu and have real food and hot showers after 17 days. We got up early to leave for the airport at 5:30am, but we could hear it raining. We crossed our fingers that the weather would clear so we could fly out that day as TenzingHillary Airport is notorious for having long delays due to bad weather. After waiting at the airport for over 8 hours they cancelled all flights for the day. We were disappointed but luckily the next morning we were on the first flight out at 7am! It was such an incredible experience and it was so rewarding to complete the whole trek. It’s by far the most beautiful place I’ve ever been, and I will definitely return one day. Fast boats in need of rowers ROWING is one of those sports that is perhaps identified as one of the more elite sports in the Olympics. Over the past several games, Australia has managed a number of gold medals in various rowing events. Building on this natural Australian ability, Shepparton Rowing Club has a number of young people in its ranks that are being groomed for possible greatness in future

Olympic meets. The club has a friendly atmosphere. It is family based and has access to a dozen boats of all classes that it has acquired over the years since it was first formed. The club is looking for new members, people who want to engage in a competitive, non-contact sport that develops a high level of aerobic fitness and balance. Since

the club owns all the boats, the fees are modest while the first three instructing sessions are free. If you would like to have a go at rowing, head on down to the rowing sheds at the south end of Victoria Lake on a Tuesday or Thursday at 4.30pm or on a Sunday morning when they are training.

A LUCKY group of members from the Shepparton North Tennis Club were invited by ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Community Play program to experience a day at the 2020 Australian Open. Club members from Shepparton North Tennis Club had the chance to meet ANZ tennis ambassador, Dylan Alcott when they arrived at Melbourne Park on ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Day, 23 January 2020.

Tennis Australia CEO and Australian Open Tournament director, Craig Tiley said “We are delighted that we are able to welcome some of our ANZ Tennis Hot Shots clubs to Melbourne Park.” “We are proud of the work these clubs do in their local communities to encourage more kids to pick up a racquet and play ANZ Tennis Hot Shots and we know they will enjoy their experience at the 2020 Australian Open.”
