New dialysis unit unveiled First stage of hospital redevelopment complete By Danielle Cox THE first new building has been unveiled as part of GV Health’s $229 million redevelopment. The new dialysis unit was officially opened last Friday, with current and new patients moving into this state-ofthe-art facility this Friday. The new facility features 12 larger, more comfortable chairs for patients, as well as four isolation rooms, a small kitchenette, televisions for patients, and the latest in technology. Eddie McGuire sends congratulations to Edna ON reaching an age we all might aspire to, Edna Harling is the picture of good health. Only coming into care at the Banksia Lodge in Kialla Lakes when she was 102, Edna shared her amazing milestone of her 105th birthday with friends and family on Monday, October 28. Edna was overwhelmed by the support and overall celebration she received, with special video messages from Australian Bowls coach, Steve Glasson along with two players, as well as from Eddie McGuire, which she wasn’t expecting.

A mad keen Collingwood supporter, Edna figures that next year will be the year for her beloved Magpies. She is also a champion bowler having been inducted into the Shepparton Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Edna still loves to get out and explore the region, she enjoys brain challenges and loves to shop and dress up. Continued on page 14

IT is a sad fact that a lot of young drivers believe they are invincible on the roads yet, as the statistics show, they are more prevalent than any other age group to incur a road fatality. According to Leading Senior Constable, Glenn Gibson, it the second highest cause of youth fatalities. Robyn Greening knows that only too well. Her son was a road accident victim that has left him partial quadraplegic due to brain injury. Robyn will address the group on this occasion. Cool Heads has now been running for ten years with some 6,500 young people having attended the program over the years. It offers a clear, if not grim picture of what young drivers can expect if they assume that impulsive and irresponsible behavior behind the wheel doesn’t matter. All too often we hear of another young person whose life has been taken or they have been the driver where they have killed their friends through bad driving. You can never get enough advanced driver education and Cool Heads is a great introduction for young drivers as to what overconfidence can do. The next program is free and open to all 16 to 25 year old drivers at the GOTafe Auditorium, on Wednesday, November 13 at Fryers Street, Shepparton commencing at 7.00pm sharp.

Joining in with Sing Australia will be local band, The Pure Drop. This family friendly event is to be held on Saturday, November 2 at 4.30pm. Entry will with a gold coin donation that goes to local charities.

Food will be available and the Belstack bar will be open. The organisers are requesting that no outside food or drink be brought into the venue. Sing Australia’s motto is to bring community together in song, to be able to enjoy the music and sing. The group is part of a national network of singing groups for everyone to enjoy. Dingo encounters at Kyabram PUPS are always cute and fun to be around, more so when they are Australia’s own Alpine dingo puppies. Kyabram Fauna Park has recently acquired two new, eight week old dingo puppies to add to their range of native Autralian animals on display. Beginning on November 2, the puppies’ enclosure will be open to visitors while oneto-one, paid 20 minute encounters with the pups will take place twice a day. General manager, Lachlan Gordon said, “The male and female puppies were born at a dingo sanctuary and moved to the fauna park last week where they are now settling in.

“Visitors can enjoy spending some time with the puppies, playing and taking photos. SAM Drawing Wall explores landscape in movement I am feeling refreshed and looking forward to jumping into this next project in Shepparton Emily Ferretti MELBOURNE based painter Emily Ferretti will be the 37th artist to take on SAM’s drawing wall - an ongoing series of commissioned, temporary wall-based drawings enlivening the foyer space of Riverlinks and Eastbank. Completing the artwork live in the foyer during the week of 28 to 31 October, Emily’s work will be inspired by the joys and freedom of living outside the city. Watching the artwork being created allows viewers insight into the complexities and at times simplicity of the creative process, and provides an opportunity to engage with the artist as she works. “I ’ve recently come back from ex h ibiti ng at Syd ney Contemporary, and after a little break I am feeling refreshed and looking forward to jumping into this next project in Shepparton. Such an exciting opportunity,” Ferretti says. ‘On my way’ will be a painting that describes travelling through landscape. enthusiastic students from each school answered that call, our cast was complete! I have been thrilled with the energy and enthusiasm each school has brought to our rehearsals. Legacy house now open for business THROUGHOUT the years, Legacy has touched the lives of many thousands of people. Women and children in particular. The families of those servicemen who have been killed in action or left with a disability from the wars they serve in. The Legacy building had reached a point where it was no longer serviceable and 18 months ago, renovation work began so that today, the building is once more back in use by the widows and Legatees. Local politician, Mark Gepp MP officiated at the opening, joined by Wendy Lovell MP and Greater Shepparton City councillor, Bruce Giovanetti. Mark Gepp said, “This is a wonderful day for Legacy House and the Shepparton community – these works mean we can continue to enjoy their facilities for years to come.” “This is just another way our Government acknowledges and supports our veterans, ensuring they have a place to meet that’s modern, safe and enjoyable.” The Victorian Government provided a grant of $44,000 to perform the renovations, opening up the main room with

aluminium windows and putting in new lighting while removing tree roots from under the floor and replacing the concrete. The renovations will also benefit other Shepparton locals that use Legacy House as a meeting place.

The Red Cross has been meeting here for 30 years, the Parkinson’s Support Group for 17 years and the Breast Cancer Support group for seven years.

Call to wrap things up IT is coming up to Xmas and time to get things all wrapped up. Greater Shepparton City Council is no exception and would like to find community groups or not-for-profit organisations to wrap presents as part of its Community Gift Wrapping program. The plan is that the organisation will have a stand in the Maude St Mall over the Christmas period funded by the Greater

Shepparton City Council where they will wrap presents for shoppers for the cost of a gold coin. The successful organisation will get $250 from the council plus get to keep the gold coins collected. The successful applicants would be responsible for opening and closing the wrapping workshop. All stock is supplied.

SAM is calling out to local artists AS an artist, trying to get reputable gallery space to display your work can be an ordeal. Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) are going local and are now seeking applicants from talented local artists to exhibit their work in a solo exhibition. Proposals are sought from artist living in, or originally from north central and north east Victoria and maintaining strong connection within these locations. SAM Curator, Lara Merrington says, “SAM Local Spotlight is an exciting, profile-raising opportunity for a regional artist. The aim of the exhibition is to encourage, inspire and promote local and regional cultural activities in our community, and provides a great opportunity to gain professional experience working in an art

museum context.” Previous SAM Local Spotlight artist Maree Santilla encourages any artist considering applying to give it a go. “The opportunity and support provided by SAM Local Spotlight has helped me gain the confidence to apply for further opportunities to exhibit and develop my arts practice. SAM’s curatorial input presented new possibilities in how I might edit my work for a space and distil a focus conceptually. By Danielle Cox GV HEALTH chief executive officer, Matt Sharp said the new dialysis unit is double the size of their current one. “We currently have seven chairs in a small, quite dark space. This new facility will be able to cater for 18 patients and is a much brighter space, with plenty of natural light filtering in through the windows. “This new unit will also mean that patients don’t have to travel to Melbourne three times a week for treatment anymore as we are now able to give the very best treatment right here in the Goulburn Valley.”

Cu rrent patients were also invited along to get their first look at the new facility, including Rosemary Edwards who was very impressed. “We spend anywhere from four to six hours in these chairs, up to three Matt Sharp times a week. There’s so much more room and natural light, it looks great.” She said. T h e n e x t s t a g e of t h e ho spit a l redevelopment will see the new emergency department open in February next year, with works on the current emergency department to follow. The five-storey building is also due to be completed in mid to late 2020.

FOR Geoff and Prue Dobson of Shepparton this was a chance to catch up with their family in London and explore parts of Scotland and Ireland. They stayed in London for 3 days, their son, Chris and daughter-in-law, Emma live right on the Regent Canal. They have a great view and Geoff says ‘a must do’ is to spend time on a long boat plying the waters of the canals. Chris is the coach of the London Lions. The AFL women’s team finals were on that weekend so the family attended and saw some great play particularly in the final which the Lions won. Next day it was time to celebrate, Chris, Emma, Geoff and Prue attended the celebrations of the big win, and did they celebrate. Next Geoff and Prue went touring. They set off for the Isle of Jersey where each year, the locals celebrate the Battle of Flowers. No longer are they firing guns, instead groups spend months making their own float. These are made mainly of timber on wheels where all surfaces must be covered in flowers, Prue helped out with the float, there were 30,000 flower stems and each stem has 3 to 5 flowers, that’s a lot of glue. The grand parade was a long line of 38 floats that made a great impression as it went through the town. Geoff was taken by the old gun torrents and fortification built by the Germans in WW2. At the beginning of the war the British left the islands and the Germans moved in. Jersey is closer to France than Britain. You can see France not far away. Now it was time to return to the mainland and hire a car, Chris and Emma were to be Geoff and Prue’s tour guides as they set off to explore parts of England, Scotland and Ireland. Heading to Glasgow and onto the Isle of Skye this was the land where kings were made, it was still summer, the view of the countryside and its many castles was magnificent. Stopping at a local distillers to sample their wares, misty whiskey distilled on smoky peat brought the day to a pleasant close.

They next flew to Belfast home to the Titanic. The shipbuilding industry no longer exists but the Titanic lives on in the form of a massive museum. It shows the history of the mighty ship from construction plans to an interactive display that takes you inside the virtual ship. In Belfast the troubles between Protestants and Catholics is said to be over but the first thing that took Geoff and Prue’s eye was the giant wall built between the houses with Protestants on one side Catholics on the other and at 9pm each night the huge gates that cover the access points are closed and locked. Geoff noted that on the Catholic side, the houses fly the Irish flag, on the other they fly the Union Jack. The city is proud to celebrate the past with giant murals depicting fights between the two sides, many of these murals are outside schools and play area keeping the image alive for the young. Geoff and Prue found that once out of the city and into the countryside and onto the coast, things were different, no troubles were to be seen. They stopped at a little old pub where they were welcomed by the locals. Some had brought musical instruments with them and soon started to play and sing Irish songs. It was fantastic and great night was had by all. Next was Londonderry but the locals have little time for London so they just call it Derry. It had been a major site for the troubles with many houses fire bombed at the height of the conflict. Again giant murals depicting the destruction. Before leaving Ireland, they travelled the Giant’s Causeway, an incredible sight. Then onto England via the Lakes District before arriving in London for the return flight home. Both Geoff and Prue loved their time away, just on 5 weeks. It was great to spend time with Chris and Emma but now it was good to be home. Until next time, Safe Travel’n, Geoff Vallance.

Dear Editor, After spending 15 odd hours on the Community Experience Survey through the Independent Assessment of Social and Economic Conditions of the Basin, you can imagine the distress caused when I discovered that the work I did had not been saved when I returned the next day to complete it. Upon calling the Independent Panel in an attempt to find the information I thought was in their online system I was dismayed to find out that as of 21st October only 350 people had completed the online survey. I know that there are way more than 300 people unhappy with the current conditions of the Murray Darling Basin, so I urge all of you with better computer literacy skills than me to please get online and complete the survey. It would give the Governments so much pleasure if there is a poor response to the survey, but let’s not give them that satisfaction. I know we are all fatigued and frustrated, especially at the constant refusal of Governments to act on the situation we are currently facing. But I urge everyone not to give up. Primarily, this position will apply an advantage thinking approach through a key development worker to Aboriginal young people eligible for Leaving Care services and their families, services and agencies connected to the young person. SEVEN years ago, the Kyvalley tennis club hardly existed, now it has just won the Club of the Year award from Tennis Victoria. Out in the middle of cow paddocks, alongside the railway line and the primary school, the tennis club has been a catalyst for social gatherings and a g rowing competitive interest in tennis in an area affected by drought and the increasing economic downturn of the dairy industry.

With a grant of $55,0 0 0 from the Victorian Government, they were able to resurface old bitumen courts with a new synthetic surface that has seen the club grow to over 300 members. Among the players are 35 Hotshot kids from as young as three years old. The oldest player, Phylis Ireland is 78 years of age and is still going strong.

AROUND 300 grade five and six students from several primary schools across the Goulburn Valley tried their hands at the Woolworths Master Blaster program organised through Cricket Victoria last Friday.

The program involved a simplified, competitive style of cricket similar to T20, allowing every student a chance to bat, bowl, wicketkeep and field throughout the day. Short games and smaller playing fields allowed for more games to be played at the same time on the Princess Park football oval, creating an action-packed atmosphere with a bit of organised chaos thrown in the mix. Cricket Victoria’s participation officer, Jacob DeAraugo said, “It’s a fun way to get kids out and active. The shorter games and simplified style allows the kids to be more engaged and is a good way to build teamwork in a supportive environment. “It’s great to see so many kids enjoying the game and giving it a real go.”

Football Skool hits record entries

ONE of the largest scale football participation events for Greater Shepparton has reached record entries for its 2019 competition. Greater Shepparton City Council is excited to welcome an influx of visitors to the 2019 Australian Football Skool Championships (AFSC) who will be accommodating 287 teams, more than 3,000 participants and 7,500 visitors to the region this weekend.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou said, “The organisers should be proud of the long running event’s growth.’ “Greater Shepparton has hosted the major event for six years now and we value the long term partnership we have with the AFSC organisers and are thrilled to have worked collaboratively with them to see the event grow, and now spill over into Mooroopna,” Ms Christou said.
