Local CEO joins sleepout for homelessness MORE than 80 business, community and government leaders slept without shelter last Thursday, June 20 in a bid to raise awareness and to help change the lives of Australians experiencing homelessness.

The CEO Sleepout is an annual event which allows participants to hear first-hand from people experiencing homelessness and to experience what some people endure each and every night.

Joining the fight against homelessness was Shepparton GOTAFE CEO, Travis Heeney.

Mr Heeney joined the initiative after he was alarmed to hear that more than 320 people were homeless in Shepparton and that more than 5,500 people were living in poverty across the region.

“As business leaders, it’s important to do all we can to highlight the plight of the most vulnerable members of our community,” Mr Heeney said.

“Through our actions and fundraising efforts, we hope to help improve the lives of those who live within our communities.”

Armed with little more than a sleeping bag and a piece of cardboard to cover the cold concrete ground, Mr Heeney rugged up rough in solidarity of homelessness and to raise awareness.

“Last night was the first time I have slept rough. It was extremely cold,” Mr Heeney said.

“For me, it was just one night, but the hard part is knowing that there are people in our community who do this every night with nothing. I was lucky I had a sleeping bag and some cardboard.”

Mr Heeney said that the most profound part of the experience had been meeting the people who are experiencing homelessness and hearing their stories.

The awareness-raising aspect of the CEO Sleepout is imperative to generating more u ndersta nd i ng a rou nd homelessness in Shepparton and is something that’s important to the work of local GOTAFE VCAL students.

message of suppor t that was really meaningful,” Mr Heeney explained.

“In it, they said that each year in every VCAL class, at each of our campuses, there are one or more students that are affected by homelessness. They wanted to let me know that they supported me in raising funds to help tackle the issue of homelessness. This really drove home the importance of participating in this event and doing all we can to highlight this issue.”

The 2019 Vinnies CEO Sleepout will see funds raised used to assist the St Vincent De Paul Society with projects across Victoria. This year, Vinnie’s fundraising goal for the Melbourne CEO Sleepout was $1.1 million and so far, that number has already been topped, with $1.3 million

in funds already raised. This figure will contribute to the current total of $7.3 million raised across 11 CEO Sleepouts nationally.

Mr Heeney said, “I have found the whole experience to be truly humbling and glad to have done my part in highlighting this issue and raising much needed funds. As part of the work for our social justice charter, this issue will be one we will continue to shine awareness on within the communities that GOTAFE operates in.

“I sincerely thank those who contributed to this cause as part of my experience.”

Rich Indigenous heritage celebrated DUE to the fact that NAIDOC Week this year falls during the first week of school holidays, Ardmona Primary School students took some time last week to celebrate Australia’s rich Indigenous history, with a series of NAIDOC Week activities.

NAIDOC Week – taking place from July 7 until July 14 - is annually, a time to reflect on and acknowledge the incredible history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Each year, there is a different thematic focus, and this year’s theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘Voice.

Nathan Turner, NAIDOC Week is an important component of the school’s culture, especially given the school’s high Indigenous population of approximately 50 percent.

“This is a great week to celebrate the heritage of some of the students at the school,” Mr Turner said, “It’s been awesome to see it all come together.”

New higher education pathway in Shepparton T H A N K S to generous f u nd i ng , L a Trobe University have partnered with four Shepparton schools and launched the Bradford Shepparton Pathway Program yesterday.

The university received $250,000 from the Gillespie Family Foundation to improve educational pathways and life opportunities for young people in the Shepparton region.

Census data shows higher education participation rates for people aged 19 to 21 are at 13 percent in Shepparton, compared with

50 and 35 percent in Melbourne and Australia respectively.

Based on a similar, highly successful program run at La Trobe’s Albury-Wodonga campus – which has seen a 44 percent increase in student enrolment from 2018 to 2019 from participating schools – staff and students from the University’s Shepparton campus will mentor Year 11 students to inspire, inform and encourage them to consider higher education.

Toolamba Bridge closed for works

Locals blitz national awards

By Sarah Knight THE 30th annual Melbourne Body Corporate Management (MBCM) Strata Specialists awards ceremony was held at the Sofitel, Melbourne CBD, earlier this month, with franchisees from across the nation invited to celebrate their achievements, and that of their peers.

Local franchisees, Emma Glazebrook and Amelia Wright, who are currently in their third year operating under the MBCM banner, and are based here in Shepparton, were pleased to attend the event, but say they certainly weren’t anticipating being the event’s most significantly recognised on the night.

One of 49 franchise branches across the country, Emma and Amelia are supported by two administrative staff; the team of four, responsible for a geographical area spanning from Echuca in the state’s north, along the Murray to Yarrawonga and further south, triangularly to encompass Seymour and Wallan.

“We were really, really humbled to take home three awards on the night,” said Emma.

“To be picked over many businesses, much larger and more established than ours was a huge compliment.”

‘A huge compliment’ indeed, as the pair were recognised for their management of the group’s largest owners’ corporation Silverwoods Estate, a 323 home site still under development, based in Yarrawonga. The second award received, paid tribute to the pair’s generosity within the local community, acknowledging their unique sponsorship contribution and assistance in the development of the NCW AFL league with the group’s Excellence In Marketing award.

And finally, the pair were both honoured to be named the recipients of the Franchisee Of The Year award.

“We are a small operation, so to be honoured with these awards - and in particular the Franchisee Of The Year Award, after only a few years as franchisees is a great privilege,” said Amelia.

Performance criteria of which the awards are judged includes such areas as business growth, feedback received by head office, geographical area, environment and demographics of the territory.

Uplifting local initiative

By Sarah Knight IF THE mental image your mind produces when you picture a women in the developing world, is that of one without a bra; this is most likely not by choice. For many disadvantaged communities a bra is simply, unobtainable or unaffordable.

A bra provides dignity, the ability to exercise and also acts to protect the breasts when a woman is performing manual labouring tasks.

Since 2005, with the assistance of Intimo and Rotary Australia World Community Service, the Uplift Project has sent over a million bras to various locations across the globe, wherever women in need have requested them.

Some such locations include, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Botswana, Uganda and Pakistan, Fiji, PNG, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Tonga, Solomon Islands, the Philippines, Bali and closer to home; several remote communities in the Northern Territory and the Kimberley regions of Australia.

The Uplift Project collects new and used bras from designated drop off/collection points and ships them off to those in need.

One such collection point is Emerald Bank’s AOK Healing Centre, a newly allocated site accepting donations, instigated by business owner and former nurse, Michelle Newten.

“I heard about the work of the charity on a recent Sunday night program and thought, ‘I know I can help - I’ll personally collect them and drop them off’,” Michelle said.

“It’s a no-brainer for me, I regularly travel to Melbourne and back to purchase and collect stock, so I just thought - why not?”

support other women.”

So Michelle contacted Uplift directly and quickly became a local drop off point.

“People can now bring their old bras into the shop (AOK Healing Centre at Emerald Bank), we’re open seven days, so they can come by whenever suits and drop them in.

“We’re also taking donations of old socks, maternity bras, mastectomy bras, swim wear, fabric nappies and new undies”, she said.

The AOK Healing Centre is accepting donations now and is located at Emerald Bank 7715 Goulburn Valley Highway, Kialla.

Council adopts budget for 2019/2020

Exhibition encourages students to be ‘Upstanding’ citizens STUDENTS throughout the region have been given the unique perspective to learn about bystander behaviour through stories of World War Two. The Courage to Care program is a not-for-profit travelling exhibition that encourages students to consider their behaviour by using the Holocaust as a medium to explore racism, prejudice, discrimination and bullying.

The exhibit honours and salutes the

‘Upstanders’, the courageous men and women heroes of genocide who took on enormous personal risk to save others.

By highlighting the importance of standing up to bullying and prejudice, Courage to Care empowers participants to take positive action and to be ‘Upstanders’ rather than bystanders to discrimination of all forms. Students take what they’ve learned and practise ‘upstanding’

behaviour in the classroom, home and throughout the wider community.

Courage to Care consists of four parts: a visual exhibition featuring artwork and relics from World War Two, a short film, a speech from a Holocaust survivor and student workshops. The program is currently at St. Luke’s College, with schools from throughout the region as far as Finley scheduled to attend.

DURING an ordinary council meeting last Tuesday, June 18, Greater Shepparton City Council adopted the 2019/2020 annual budget.

The budget proposes a 2.5 percent increase in rates revenue and a 1.8 percent increase in kerbside collection.

City of Greater Shepparton Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said that council has proposed a financially sustainable budget that it hopes will fully fund asset renewals, generate surplus and to borrow responsibly.

“What was presented for adoption was a financially responsible budget which achieves a balance between wants and needs in order to efficiently manage our resources and provide high quality services in infrastructure to our community,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

The rate increase and increase in kerbside collection charges will generate $79.67 million over the financial year, excluding supplementary valuations.

In the 2019/2020 financial year, council will spend $37.64 million on capital works within the municipality, with $26.28 million committed to the new SAM building.

Greater Shepparton City Council director corporate services, Chris Teitzel said that in simple terms, the budget can be broken down into two main areas: how much council plans on spending and how much income is needed to fund this planning.

“The spending is made of two components, the operating budget and the capital budget. The operating budget tells you what it costs to run the council every year and the capital budget includes phsycial infrastructure, buildings and operational assets, as well as funding proposals for these projects,” Mr Tetizel said.

Meet the SAM Foundation Board

WITH construction recently commenced at the new site of Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), it’s a perfect opportunity to introduce the region to the passionate group of local, accessible and dedicated group of volunteers working for the benefit of the community.

The SAM Foundation was established in April 2014, with board members working tirelessly behind the scenes to help raise money for the museum. Since then, some of the faces of the SAM Foundation may have changed, but the commitment to community remains as fervent as ever.

CURRENTLY, THERE ARE SIX MEMBERS OF THE SAM FOUNDATION BOARD: JOHN HEAD (chair) is a familiar name to most art fans throughout the region and is a longstanding supporter of the Greater Shepparton community and its many arts organisations. Over the years, John has been heavily involved with many local arts projects, including STAG and the Shepparton Festival, as an artist, attendee and philanthropist.

MERYL HILL (director) is a Friends of SA M committee member and has vo lu n t e e r e d f o r m a ny c o m mu n it y activities around the region. Meryl and her husband Roy founded Sailability Shepparton and you can see their boats out on the lake giving joy to those who might not have been able to have that experience otherwise. Both Meryl and Rob enjoy travelling in their caravan visiting art exhibitions wherever they can find them.

POLLY SYMONS (director) is the newest (and youngest) member of the Shepparton Foundation board. Born and bred in Shepparton, Polly works as a solicitor at Morrison & Sawers Lawyers and is passionate about encouraging the youth of Shepparton to become more involved in community building and culturally diverse projects.

DREW PET TIFER (director) is an absolute multi-tasker who divides his time between Kyabram and Melbourne.

Drew runs his own business, teaches at RMIT, serves on various art boards, and also loves to craft his own art. When he’s not doing all of that, Drew is an active member of the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association and you can see him umpiring games locally on the weekends.

Government must deliver on Shepparton rail promise THE State Government has been called upon to ensure that stages two and three of the regional rail revival package are successfully completed by its scheduled 2022 date.

Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed, has welcomed the completion of stage one and notes that the recently added fifth daily rail service has been well received by the community. But Ms Sheed wants to ensure that the State Government adheres to its promises and keeps the regional rail package fixed within its focus.

Costing $43 million, stage one of the Shepparton corridor upgrade saw the introduction of 29 new coach services per week between Shepparton and Seymour,

as well as the addition of 10 extra train services a week between Melbourne and Shepparton. Stabling works to accommodate the new rail services in Shepparton were also completed.

The State Government provided an additional $313 million for stage two in last year’s budget, the biggest investment in the corridor to date.

Stage two of the project will include platform extensions at Mooroopna, Murchison East and Nagambie stations, a crossing loop extension near Murchison East, upgrades to 59 level crossings between Donnybrook and Shepparton and stabling to house VLocity trains.

Stage three includes track upgrades to enable trains to travel up to 130km/h.

“I fought long and hard to put a better rail service for Shepparton at the forefront of my campaign last term and to see the completion of the promised rollout is essential for the government to maintain its credibility in the Shepparton region,” Ms Sheed said.

“Having witnessed the underfunding and lack of attention under previous governments, I will be watching this government closely to make sure it delivers on all of its rail commitments to Shepparton in full.”

Tax time is here... and so are the scammers AS tax time approaches each year the types of tax scams being used to try and trick us into providing our personal information or making payments to the fraudsters become more and more sophisticated.

Over the months leading up to 30 June 2019, the Australian Taxation Office has published the details of a number of new scam types, including examples of recorded phone messages demanding immediate payment of a tax debt and threatening immediate arrest, instances where the scammers use WhatsApp to impersonate the ATO requesting payment for fake tax debts, and emailing people from a fake myGov email address, asking them to fill out an application to receive a tax refund.

GMCU’s chief risk and compliance officer Brett Elgar, encourages people to make sure they know they are dealing with a legitimate source before providing any personal or banking information.

“One important step that you can take when contacted by an organisation that you are not sure about is to contact them directly via another method,” Mr Elgar said.

“For example, if you receive a call from someone claiming

to be from the ATO, ask them for their details, and then call them back via a contact number published directly by the ATO. If you think you might have inadvertently given your personal or banking details to a scammer – contact your financial institution immediately.”

Another important way to protect against scammers is to stay informed about current scams. Fake tradies on the rise RESIDENTS in Victoria’s northeast are being warned to be vigilant against a group of fake tradies, following reports of $14,000 being scammed out of homeowners in Greater Shepparton and Benalla alone.

Fake tradies are known to knock on doors or drop leaflets, offering home improvement services such as roofing, tree lopping, painting and driveway resurfacing. Often the work fake tradies promise to carry out never eventuates or is of a poor standard, and they disappear

Also, beware anyone asking for cash up front, or who claim you have received a fine for asbestos contained in your property.

1.2 million visit Greater Shepparton in 2018 continued from front page IN 2016, Greater Shepparton City Council set a goal to try and reach a target of 1.3 million visitors by 2028. However, that goal looks set to be achieved almost ten years ahead of schedule, with 1.2 million visitors recorded in 2018 alone.

During the tourism event, the community were commended on their great efforts and also given an update on the progress of construction of the two new exciting museums coming to town.

As many around town would’ve already noticed, works on the new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) site are well and truly underway with construction still on schedule to be completed by March 2020.

Chair of Tourism Greater Shepparton, Ross Graham said that supporting the SAM is a crucial part of ensuring the continued growth of tourism in the region and was proud to announce they will be donating $2000 to SAM Foundation Board chair, John Head, with plans to contribute a further $3000 later down the track.

“There has been a lot happening in the last couple of months and one of the most important things we see is supporting SAM,” Mr Graham said.

“Although we are not a large financial organisation, Tourism Greater Shepparton believes that SAM will put us on the map and determine visitor economy and that’s why we’ve

decided to put our money where our mouth is.”

Further to learning about the developments of SAM, attendees were also given updates on the new Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE).

MOVE Shepparton will be an innovative and ambitious project that celebrates the role transportation, motoring and trucking have played in shaping the Shepparton way of life and the characters and industries that have been a part of this journey.

MOVE Shepparton chairman, Peter Hill said, “MOVE provides the Goulburn Valley with the unique and long-awaited opportunity to tell our story as one of Australia’s original food bowls.”

Construction is currently scheduled to commence in November 2019, with the museum set to be fully operational by mid next year. The new museum will be built on the site of Shepparton Motor Museum and Collectables and will include 10,000 square metres of indoor and outdoor multipurpose space.

Other exciting events on the horizon that were discussed during the tourism event include the new major music event Land of Plenty, the 2020 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, the 50th Anniversary of the Murchison Meteorite, the 2020 CFA Championships and many more.

Crime Stoppers roadshow hits the town LAST week, Crime Stoppers Victoria launched a community safety roadshow in conjunction with emergency services, designed to empower individuals with practical information to help make their homes and communities safer. A whale of a time

GRADUATION EVENT… Jervis Bay is home to the Royal Australian Naval College and also plenty of great whale watching.

I have just returned from Shoalhaven on the south coast of NSW, the weather was magic, fine sunny days around 22 degrees during the day, a great time to be out on the crystal clear blue waters of Jervis bay.

This area is world renowned for its white sandy beaches and clear blue waters, I was visiting Jervis Bay home to the Royal Australian Navel College, my Grandson Steven Vallance was graduating as a naval officer.

It’s a full on ceremony as the graduates show their skills on the parade ground, on this occasion the chief of Navy Vice Admiral Michael Noonan, AO, RAN was the reviewing officer, as he made his way around the new officers standing on parade he stopped at Steven’s position and asked him where he was from, Steven replied Shepparton Sir, the Vice Admiral replied so am I, it appears he grew up in Shepparton and still has rellies in Mooroopna (it’s a small world).

It’s currently the whale watching season through until November, we decided to go whale watching with Jervis Bay Wild, the company has many years’ experience with whale and dolphin tours. As we headed out into the bay I was talking with one of the staff on board, she asked me where I was from I said Shepparton, she said she was from Echuca and used to work on the paddle steamers, went on holiday here and stayed (it’s a small world).

Right now it’s the start of the whale watching session, as we made our way

out into the big blue, there they were water spouts all around us as the whales exhaled, then some rose up as their bodies came to the surface and their tails rose out of the water before splashing down, it was amazing we saw 15 whales that day much more than I expected.

These majestic Humpback whales are on their northern migration where they will breed. On their southern migration, you will see mothers and their young calves taking time out in Jervis Bay before continuing their journey.

As well as the whales, the area is well known for its seal colonies and large numbers of Bottlenose dolphins. The bay is surrounded by towering sea cliffs of the Beecroft Peninsula, it’s quite spectacular, the sea cliffs have many caves to explore and a history that once saw guns mounted on the cliffs as defensive measures.

You could spend many days exploring the many beaches with their bright white silica sand and even in winter it was 22 degrees while I was there even warm enough to go splashing through the clear blue water.

I stayed at Huskisson or Husky as the locals call it, it’s a small village-like town, with an RSL club and a pub and plenty of places to dine overlooking the blue waters of Jervis Bay, yes the NSW South Coast has lots to offer.

Dear Editor, I know that it is very important to focus on the positives when the going gets tough, however burying your head in the sand when there is a problem will not solve it.

Last week, Dairy Australia’s June 2019 Situation and Outlook report was released and pointed to a number of positives for the dairy industry.

As a dairy farmer myself I find it a very bitter pill to swallow that once again the unnecessary destruction of an industry with so much potential is hidden under the carpet. Across southern NSW and northern Victoria not a week goes by without hearing of another dairy farm closing down. In fact in the NSW Murray Valley there has been an 18% reduction in dairy farms since the start of the year.

No upturns in consumption or export demands will compensate for the biggest and most damaging force impacting innovative and passionate dairy farmers in the nation’s premier food bowl - the cost of water.

And before another high paid politician, CEO or bureaucrat blames the drought, let’s be clear about the real problem - poor water policy and pouring billions of litres into a forest. This occurred during the drought and does not paint a picture of a drought crisis.

The most damaging crisis being faced in our region is that our leaders do not have the courage to hold those responsible for poor water management and policy to account.

Instead of sugar-coating the problems, our dairy industry leaders need to be highlighting our major impediments, as this will increase the chance of getting them fixed.

One of my earlier submissions suggested free timed parking to generate business.

A nd si nc e t he n we h ave h ad t he introduction of phone/card parking meters and more recently the parking metering being outsourced to a private company involving redundancy of our local parking officers.

My concern today, Thursday 20th June, is with the flurry of construction works in the CBD (perhaps the money needs spending by 30th June). These works have impacted on all of us.

This morning I paid and parked behind my bank, GMCU, thinking that an hour would suffice. I am a very senior resident these days and just walking through and around these works is hazardous with all the activity, machinery and detours. And of course, north end of the mall, corner of Fryers and Maude Streets had to be reconnoitred to do my shopping.

Finishing at a shop near that site, to my horror, I heard the woman in front of me at the cash out told, “There she goes, slapping fines on cars along Fryers St at $80 a pop!” - Who was she, I thought, feeling uneasy about my parking back behind GMCU. I finished my transaction and hurried “safely” to my car 15 mins over time. Relieved to find no ticket and knowing how angry I would have been, I high-tailed it out of there to SPC car park to continue on my business.

How about giving us all “a fair go” please, councillors?

We’re a wellbehaved bunch WITH the current media and supporters all over anti social behaviour at AFL games and Behaviour Awareness Officers ruling with an iron fist at the major venues, we should all give ourselves a pat on the back for the way people conduct themselves at GVL venues.

I don’t want to speak to soon but the crowds and crowd behaviour locally is very respectful, while still shouting and cheering our favourite and not so favourite players.

The respect that is shown in country football to the men and

women in white (the umpires actually wear colour sometimes) is something that the movers and shakers at headquarters should be very proud of. So it should be too, as this is how we will encourage younger people to grab a whistle and take up umpiring.

While the players pull the boots on and enter the field of battle, it’s great to know that country football is still a great place for young families to go and enjoy the footy without the worry of anything going on that could spoil the day.

Swimming in new waters RECENTLY, 15 Murray cod were moved from unliveable irrigation channels around the Cobram area to a more natural habitat at Dainton’s Bridge, Shepparton. This move is part of a joint initiative between Goulburn Murray Water and the Victorian Fisheries Authority to relocate over 200 Murray cod to more suitable waterways.

Australian Fishing Traders Association board member, Steve ‘Trelly’ Threlfall said, “Points in the irrigation systems are being lowered for maintenance and weed removal, so a lot of the fish wouldn’t have survived if we didn’t move them.”

Mooroopna Golf Club

The initiative is part of the Victorian Government’s Target One Million phase two commitments, which aims to boost recreational fishing and grow participation to one million anglers by 2020.

By putting more fish into the waters, it gives people more of a chance to catch and enjoy fishing. This gives those who are new to the waters a better opportunity to catch a big fish and makes for a good family outing as well.

The Murray cod will also be relocated to other areas across Shepparton, including Victoria Park Lake.

As the course prepares for further expansion – with three new holes and a driving range scheduled for development – we thought we would take a look back over the Mooroopna Golf Club’s massive 90-year history.
