By David Lee PLANS for a trial opening of the Maude Street Mall to traffic are under way with hope that construction could commence by mid next year, with council placing further ‘activation’ options on hold in the interim.

A tender for the options went out last week for the potential to open the mall, with $250,000 being set aside for conceptual designs and $500,000 that was set aside for activation and other improvements put on hold unless it is needed for the trial opening.

After the tender process closes on July 19, council will look at appointing a contractor in September this year, with shovel movement set to take place in the second quarter of next Continued on page 16 year.

Win for Shepparton rail network A WAY forward for the passenger rail network in the Goulburn Valley is a step closer thanks to the Federal Government last week announcing it would be providing $10M in funding towards Shepparton Freight Network Planning.

A total of $1.6B will be invested in Victorian regional rail infrastructure to provide better rail services right across the state, including $91M toward upgrades for the Bendigo to Echuca line, a joint $140M will go towards the north east line as well as the funding for the Shepparton Freight Network Planning.

Federal Member for Murray, the Hon Damian Drum MP said this investment in the Murray electorate will accelerate better rail services for the community.

“I am constantly contacted by constituents around the electorate about the poor conditions and infrequent rail services in our region. The Federal Coalition Government is investing in Australia’s regions to better connect them to our capital cities,” Mr Drum said “The $10M Shepparton Passenger and Freight Rail Network Planning scheme must deliver a genuine vision and way forward for passenger rail in the Goulburn Valley. We need an evidence based report telling the Federal and State Government what needs to be done to deliver ten daily services to Melbourne.

“The North East Rail Line has been having issues for a number of years and is in desperate need of upgrading. The $140M joint investment will deliver more reliable services for passengers who use the train in the Strathbogie Shire.

“A better service to and from Bendigo will make life easier for many of the locals

in Echuca who usually have to drive to Bendigo to get a train into the city. Echuca is one of our tourist hot spots, not only will the upgrade help people get to Melbourne, it will also provide more opportunities for people who live in Melbourne to make a trip to Echuca and beautiful the Murray River.

“The $91M for the Echuca Line will provide signalling upgrades to deliver extra services and shorter travel times between Bendigo and Echuca,” Mr Drum said.

Community hailed for assisting in arrests

By David Lee THE community is being hailed for their assistance in helping to locate persons who have been sought after by police, following the recent release of several images and information on 11 people known to frequent the local area.

Six out of the 11 recently published headshots of those whom Crime Stoppers wished to speak with have been arrested, meaning only five remain outstanding.

Melissa McGee, Alice Briggs, Osman Altun, Peter Traval and David Atkinson are still wanted by authorities for a range of offences including alleged criminal damage offences, damaged property incidences and theft.

NerdMania 2017 has arrived NERDS are getting ready to assemble for the 2017 NerdMania event, with tickets on sale now.

THE energy and joy of African culture is set to flow through Numurkah next week, when the ‘100% hOPE Choir and Dance Troupe’ visits from Uganda.

The choir from the 100% hOPE school in Uganda will be accompanied by their ‘mum’, Australian school teacher and former world championship dragon boat racer, Trishelle Sayuuni (nee Grady) on July 10.

Trishelle was taken hostage on her first day in Uganda in 2009, but returned several times and eventually moved there after establishing the charity 100% hOPE. In her first week of operation in 2012, Trishelle had over 60 orphaned and vulnerable children on her doorstep needing urgent help. By 2013, despite no paid staff outside Uganda, 100% hOPE had purchased five acres of land. By 2016, the new school started, a new piggery was thriving, the boy’s home and playgroup were completed and the local teachers at the school were trained to Australian standards. Today, over 170 children have been housed and educated by the charity.

Trishelle said, “There’s so much joy in Uganda, even amongst the poverty, and we

want to share that and inspire Australians.

“This is an incredible adventure for the choir, but they’re working so hard, because they know this is their chance to use their talents to help their 100% hOPE brothers and sisters, now and into the future.”

The public is invited to come and see

the choir perform at The Mary MacKillop Centre, 16 Tocumwal Road, Numurkah on July 10.

The concert is free with an opportunity for people to make a donation during the night.

Going up against bakeries from across Australia at the 2017 Australia’s Best Pie Competition, Tatura Hot Bread’s unique Chicken, Cranberry and Brie Pie was unbeatable, and saw them named the national winner.

Tatura Hot Bread owners, Jeff and Glenda Alexander said, “Pie wise this in the most prestigious award we’ve won.

“It’s pretty amazing.

“We were so shocked when we were announced as the winner.

“When the recipe originally came to us it was actually chicken, cranberry and camembert but we decided to change it to brie.

“The competition was held over three days and each day the pies were judged. They were judged both hot and cold on aroma, even cooking, stability of the filling and of course on taste. They were also judged on creativity and we think the uniqueness of this pie definitely helped with the win.

“We are so proud of all the effort our staff have put in, and it’s nice to receive the recognition.”

“When we got the 50/50 results back from the recent consultation period we carried out for opening the mall to traffic, it was the lobbying from stakeholders, traders and chamber who asked for the trial to be undertaken that has made council decide to move ahead with it.”

home buyers in regional areas MELBOURNE is Australia’s fastest growing city and predictions indicate its population could soar to 7 million by 2030 and 8 million by 2050. As a result the wellconsidered ‘move to the country’ and buy property has never been more important since the Victorian Government has announced that stamp duty will be removed from purchases under $600,000 by first home buyers.

The scheme, started for contracts entered into after 1 July, is expected to benefit many first home buyers every year, saving $15,535 stamp duty on a $600,000 property.

Tax discounts for a home valued between $600,000 and $750,000 will be applied on a sliding scale. The exemption and concession, unlike the first home owner’s grant, will apply to both new and established homes.

With the axe in stamp duty, the changes mean that it will be easier for Victorian first home buyers to have access to the property market. THE Victorian State Government has introduced legislation that will ban smoking in all outdoor dining and drinking areas when food is being eaten, or is available for consumption from August 1, 2017.

T hese changes w ill cover prem ises such as restaurants, cafés and licensed premises, including courtyard dining areas, footpath dining, food fairs, organised outdoor events and street festivals.

These new reforms have strong community support because they protect the community from exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke, support people who have quit or are trying to quit smoking and makes smoking in the community less acceptable.

Currently smoking bans apply at bus stops and train stations, in vehicles with children present, within 10m of playgrounds, skate parks and under-18 sporting events.

The maximum penalty for someone who smokes in these prohibited areas is $792, with an on-the-spot infringement penalty of $158.

THE Hyperloop One rail network, which is similar to those currently running in the Shanghai district in China and San Fransisco-Los A ngeles in the US, is being researched by RMIT transport designers, with the near-vacuum tube able to transport people in pods at over 1,000km/h. This would mean the trip from Melbourne to Sydney would take just 53 minutes and a mere nine minutes from Melbourne to Shepparton.

The current plan would see towns such as Shepparton, Wodonga and Goulburn included along the line, effectively connecting the areas in such a way that a Mega-Region across the Australian east coast would be created between Melbourne and Sydney.

While a High Speed Rail proposal, launched last year by the CLARA group, put its cost at $200B, an early ballpark figure for the Hyperloop One rail network would be around $40B, but accurate costings are expected to occur later this year.

Committee for Greater Shepparton CEO, Sam Birrell said, “New technology always has to be considered. Henry Ford once said – ‘if I had asked people what they want, they would have said faster horses.’

“Who knows what technology lies ahead for us? I think in the ‘50s and ‘60s we overestimated the potential of space travel and underestimated how communication technology would change

the landscape. Hindsight is 20/20.

“We have no way of knowing if the Hyperloop will be viable, but we need to create an environment where science and technology are used to explore the improbable.”

Looking behind the veil into mental health MENTAL health issues affect 20 percent of the population, that’s as many as one in five of us! Over more recent years a veil has been pulled away there is a much greater understanding and acceptance of mental health issues within our world but we still have a long way to go.

TAC Cup girls MVP announced T H E Murray Bushrangers TAC Cup girls presentation was a sensational conclusion to the inaugural TAC Cup girls competition. The Murray Bushrangers went through the five-game competition undefeated, finishing second only by percentage.

Trevor has worked with the Murray Bushrangers girls team since inception and its fruition is largely through his efforts.

Coach, Sam Ahmet spoke glowingly about the passion and willingness of the whole TAC Cup girls squad to work hard and that the 2017 season and presentation night was the culmination of many years of hard work by the likes of Trevor, Jorja Daniel, Tim Madden, Russell Eden, Brianna Cossar, and Brian Hill amongst others.

Commencement of the awards began with the exiting players from the Murray Bushrangers 2017 squad receiving their jumper and a team photo as a gift, and included Chloe Brain (captain), Abbey Favaro, Paige Nash, Molly Kennedy, Tahlia Smith, Chelsea Knight, and Gabby Goldsworthy.

The announcement of the Murray Bushrangers Youth Girls Inaugural Most Valuable Player was greeted with huge anticipation. All members of the coaching staff voted a 5 to 1 system based on key criteria such as leadership, character, coachability, game impact and football talent. In a close vote count, the winner was Mooroopna product, Millie Brown, who played nearly every position on the field and continued to develop her game throughout the system and will continue with the program into 2018.

By David Lee AFTER recently holding a Ladies Day event, the Shepparton United Football/Netball Club, including the youth girls team raised a total of $715 that was last week donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Shepparton United Football/Netball Club Youth Girls coach, Dean Walton said, “To help raise the funds the youth girls team sold off a fully signed Australian Football League Women’s Melbourne jumper.

“Part of our first season of youth girls football is to not only teach the players how to play football but also that there are other things that club environments provide, this includes health and

wellbeing education.

“Unfortunately everyone knows someone who has had breast cancer, whether that be friends or family, it affects everyone.

“One of our youth girls player’s mum is a breast cancer survivor as are some other of our female club members. We have also had club members and their family members unfortunately not survive.

We see this (the National Breast Cancer Foundation) as a great cause.

“It is very important for the club to participate in fundraising events such as thins, not just to raise money for a great cause but increasing our players’ and clubs’ education outside of football and netball. We are so much more than just a football/netball club.”

GVL one of the top four netball leagues in the state RECENTLY, the Goulburn Valley League (GVL) participated in the Netball Victoria Association Championships at the State Netball Hockey Centre in Melbourne, performing so well that they have been named one of the top four leagues in Victoria.

The GVL recorded only one loss during the round robin stage of the championships, including beating arch-rival SS&A Ovens & Murray FNL, who beat the GVL during the recent interleague weekend.

Such dominant performances saw the GVL qualify for the finals of the championships.

Unfortunately, the GVL lost by a solitary goal to the Bellarine FNL in the semifinal, which ended their championships for another year.

with Bendigo FNL winning 18 to 14, to become the Netball Victoria Association Champions for 2017.

This marks the third year in a row in which the GVL has made it to the final four of the Netball Victoria Association Championships, showcasing the exceptional talent of Goulburn Valley Netball.

Coach, Tracey Brereton was extremely proud of her team, despite the close loss.

“While we did not get the result that we wanted, the girls played really well all day.

“We fought hard all day, in what I believe was a really tough draw, so to make the finals was an extraordinary effort.

“To lose in the semi-final by one goal after a penalty in the final 10 seconds is heartbreaking, but that is the sport.

“The team should be proud of what they achieved, and hopefully we can return next year and win it.”
