Contractors named for $34M facility CONTRACTS were signed on Friday for the new Shepparton Villages $34M, 120 bed aged care residential development to be constructed on part of Chas Johnson Reserve at Tarcoola.

Architectural firm ‘dwp suters’ designed the new facility, which will set a new benchmark for residential care in the Hume Region. Local building contractors, Hansen Yuncken won the tender for the construction and with a history in north east and central Victoria spanning over 90 years, have committed to sourcing the majority of contractors for the project from the Shepparton and district area.

By David Lee THE skyline and streetscape of Shepparton has been transforming over the last 12 months, with more than $1.37B worth of commercial projects taking shape right across the city.

From north to south, east to west there are many buildings currently being constructed

or have just finished being constructed that will provide some new options for locals or are becoming the new home for some current local businesses.

The most obvious of projects would have to be the Shepparton Law Courts Precinct, which is going up at a rapid rate. The precinct comes at a cost of $73M and is set

to be completed later this year.

The relocation of Bunnings Warehouse to a purpose built premises is also another of the larger projects taking shape on Benalla Road. The new Bunnings building comes at a cost of $53M and is set to open its doors mid this year.

Partnership helps institute continue growth

By David Lee A RELATIONSHIP and the foresight between two locals that has been strong throughout decades has helped toward the success of the National Institute of Integrative Medicine in Melbourne (NIIM).

Local philanthropist, Peter Copulos has had a strong and keen interest in supporting medicine for many years, which is evident locally through his involvement in the Peter Copulos Wellness Centre on Graham Street, but it was his partnership with former local, Professor Avni Sali that helped to create and grow the NIIM, and Mr Copulos’ continuous donations are helping to see the institute stay at the forefront of modern medicine.

Professor Sali said, “NIIM is a charitable institute. It is a very large clinic, which supports our academic work with our research and teaching area and it is the continuous funding we receive from people like Peter that help us continue the work we are doing to help others.

“Because what we were doing was different it made things difficult to gain support.

“When we first started just over 10 years ago, I needed to get supporters in order to find a property.

“Initially my biggest hurdle was to get a group of people to help but Peter, Rupert Murdoch’s sister and a few others came on board to be owners of the building, which was really huge to be able to get that going.

We’ve now moved to quite a substantial building.

“I know that I have the support from Peter and that if I really had a need for something that I can contact him. I know that he would be supportive in what we want to do, which is really very good of him to do that.

“Integrative medicine will replace all existing medicine eventually because it looks at all areas and aspects relating to health.

“It’s these sorts of things are appealing to Peter and others supporting us.

“We have expanded to the Gold Coast and there are plans to open in Sydney, which is exciting for NIIM.” Mr Copulos said, “I recently donated

$20,000 to the NIIM, which is something I have been doing for the last seven years to help support Avni and his enterprise.

“I’ve known the Sali family from the late 50s and I went to school with some of them. Got involved with Avni Sali about the time he left Swinburne University when he was completing research on Integrated Medicine. Approximately 10 years ago I was visiting his Bell Street operation for consultation on supplements and while I was visiting on one particular occasion about nine years ago he said he would like to open an integrated medicine building in Melbourne to continue his research on integrated medicine.

“I gave it some thought and discussed it with my family at the time and then I agreed to pursue premises for the operation in Melbourne. We began inspecting premises and after about two years we came across a building that was coming up for auction. We went to the auction and ended up the highest bidder.

“The owner was still considering our bid, so I decided to leave the auction and asked

the agent to let me know if the owner had accepted our bid. After about 15 minutes I called the agent who told me that the owner had accepted a lower bid from another party.

“We were very disappointed. I spoke with Avni and he said it was a terrific building and good location, so the next day I found out who the new purchaser was and made an appointment to see him to see if we could make a deal to acquire the building. After long negotiations, I ended up offering $100,000 over the price he had paid for the building and he agreed.

“There were a lot of renovations that we had to undertake to get the building up to the standard of a medical centre.

We operated there for approximately five years and then began looking for a larger premises in Burwood, which was closer to the city. Now the institute has over 30 doctors working there in a first class facility worth over $10M. “Avni is doing a terrific job with the institute. I’ve always supported him and am pleased to continue doing so.”

The bakery team produced award winning goods that they entered in the Bakery Association of Australia baking competition including a first place for their cob loaf grain

Taskforce launched with big picture planning

THE biggest challenge Victoria faces today is managing population growth, including how that creates new jobs and protecting the way we live, and the Victorian Coalition is developing a population policy to address these significant issues for the next 30-plus years.

To formulate a comprehensive long-term policy for Victoria until at least the year 2050, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader, Population Policy and Housing Affordability, Tim Smith has created a statewide Victorian Population Policy Taskforce.

To break away from Labor’s blinkered, citycentric style of management, Mr Smith has also asked a number of regional MPs to chair localised taskforces so that the specific needs of the regions are represented and addressed in the policy.

Mr Smith has appointed Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell chair of the Greater Shepparton Population Taskforce, which was launched last week.

Ms Lovell said, “This local taskforce will work with the Victorian Population Taskforce to create a blueprint for how to grow the Greater Shepparton region by identifying the issues facing the community from population growth, and harnessing the knowledge of the local community and a panel of independent experts.”

Ms Lovell said the taskforce will investigate how the Coalition can assist, incentivise

and work with local councils, communities and business to manage population growth and develop the Greater Shepparton region, including addressing jobs, infrastructure and the way we live.

“The Coalition’s position is that Victoria needs to become a state of cities and not a city state, and Victoria needs to regionalise its growth and not just focus on Melbourne alone,” Ms Lovell said.

“Victoria cannot continue to grow the way we have the past 30 years for the next 30 years.”

Celebrations ring out for La Trobe’s 50th LA TROBE University turned 50 this month, and the Shepparton Campus joined in the celebrations.

On March 8 1967, Sir Archibald Glenn was installed as chancellor, La Trobe students started their first classes and celebrated with staff in the evening at the inaugural staff and student ball at Glenn College.

50 years later, La Trobe staff and students were invited to gather at each campus to mark this significant milestone with a celebration of their own.

Shepparton students and staff marked the milestone with a barbeque, live music from local musicians, prizes and a big birthday cake at the campus courtyard.

Past and present staff and students attended the event to reflect on the past 50 years. The university also launched a 50th anniversary commemorative book ’From the paddock to the Agora: Fifty years of La Trobe University,’ which brings together six of La Trobe’s leading scholars and alumni to reflect on different periods and aspects of the university’s life.

Head of Shepparton campus, Sue Nalder said, “If La Trobe didn’t start 50 years ago, the Shepparton campus wouldn’t exist and we wouldn’t have opportunities for students in

EARLY Albanian settlers came to the Shepparton region more than 100 years ago. Traditionally Albanians worked in fruit and vegetable industry and ‘The Harvest Festival ’ was a day created to celebrate marking the end of the harvest season. In it’s 18th year, the Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival was open to the general public for the first time last year, which was a huge success.

Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival event co-ordinator, Reg Qemal said, “The Harvest Festival is a day of celebration marking the end of the harvest season and a day to celebrate our culture.

At the Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival most of the fruit and vegetables are donated and the event itself is huge.

“We have expanded the children’s zone this year and entry is just a gold coin donation. This year’s major raffle prize is a trip to Albania valued at $5,000 and this event brings interstate visitors

Glenda said, “We’re really proud of our team, from our bakers, to shop staff. The competition included 96 bakeries from

Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia with 560 products entered and we received 14 awards including first prize for our plain meat pie, curried chicken and vegetable pie and our grain loaf. One of the best things about these competitions is receiving critical feedback from the judges, which we always use to our benefit.

The new $800,000 Byers Electrical building that is almost complete on Benalla Road is certainly a sight to see and has been constructed because the business outgrew their previous premises in Annerley Avenue and will house a showroom, meeting rooms, large storage shed out the back and offices to house the business’ staff members.

After noticing a boost in those requiring its

services and outgrowing the current location, Shepparton Myotherapy made the decision to rent out a new purpose built premises that has just finished being constructed on the corner of Nixon Street and Corio Street.

Goulburn Valley Dental Group is close to completing a new $3M purpose built premises, right next door to their old building on Nixon Street due to the business wanting to improve its service, an increase from six to 20 staff over the years and requiring a larger working space for its administrators. The new building includes a brand new conference room, an increase from a six chair dental surgery to a 10 chair surgery and has state-of-the-art inclusions to keep up with advances in technology.

Beginning six months ago, a $1.2M APCO car wash was constructed with two automatic Mr Magic Storm model wash bays. The decision was made to build the car wash due to the service station being well supported by the community.

A new Chemist Warehouse is also currently under construction in Shepparton’s North, which, once completed, will mean that there will be a Chemist Warehouse in north, south and central Shepparton.

With the removal of the Shell Service Station/ Coles Express at Victoria Park Lake looming, a new Coles Express service station is currently being constructed at Riverside Plaza, which is scheduled to open in May. With a $1.5M build starting four and half months ago, Riverview Dental’s new state-ofthe-art building on Welsford Street is set to open on Monday and replaces the business’ previous building in the same location, which has been in the Shepparton community for 43 years.

FOR Lindsay and Robyn Dann of Shepparton this was a chance to catch up with some old friends and experience the culture and food of a very interesting country.

Their destination was Sri Lanka, a country of contrasts with a history dating back to its British origins and a full on dedication to the game of cricket. They were joined by Shepparton couple, Bill and Kathryn Carroll and friends now living in Dubai, Andrew and Gabby Van Newton.

Flying into the capital Colombo, they headed for a beach resort for a few days R&R and then onto Galle with its fabulous old fort and of course cricket ground.

It was here that they visited a crocodile and fish farm. The fish were for eating, the crocodile for handbags.

You could sit with your feet in a pond while the fish would mass around your feet removing any dead skin. It was at once pleasant and a bit ticklish.

From Colombo they took the local train to Kandy. It was an interesting trip. The train is open-sided and the fare was just under $2 for the three and a half hour trip. It was great with wonderful scenery and at each stop along the way hawkers would join the train selling everything including an array of food.

You could choose from freshly cut pineapple, mango with cinnamon (Sri Lanka is known for its cinnamon), corn with salty butter, freshly made rice curry and chilli fritters and pappadums and they loved it all.

Arriving in Kandy they took a local bus to their villa. It was an old British manor fully restored, the accommodation was great the food very good (the owner was also the chef) and the city itself a fascinating place to explore.

Kandy is famous for its Buddhist site including the Temple of the Tooth. It is said to be the tooth of Buddha and is always popular as a religious temple. During special

festivals, people come from all over Sri Lanka to celebrate.

Kandy is surrounded by mountains and tea plantations and a biodiverse rainforest. In the centre of town is a large lake and people love to walk around it of an evening. A must do is a visit to tea plantations and meet with the local women harvesting the crop.

Catching the train they travelled on the return journey to Colombo, where they wanted to visit a special restaurant. Known as the Yarl, the restaurant was voted by TV chief, Rick Stein as having the best curry and the specialty of the house is Jaffna chilli crab.

Lindsay says the food was great but the restaurant wasn’t exactly high end. The tables were stainless steel, the plate was a banana leaf and the napkins were made from newspaper.

While in Colombo they also visited the Cricket Club Café. The café is stacked with cricket memorabilia used by famous cricketers dating back to the 1940s, there were items used by such names as Sir Donald Bradman, Ray Lindwall, Shane Warne, and Arjuna Ranatunga to mention just a few.

The café walls were covered in old newspapers from the 1930s, with photos and posters honouring the past.

But all good things must come to an end.

The holiday was over and it was time to fly home to Australia and Dubai. Lindsay would like to thank Kate Mudford of Escape Travel in Shepparton for arranging everything.

Lindsay says he can recommend Sri Lanka as a great travel destination. The people are very friendly, you feel very safe and the food is really great plus there is so much to see and do.

THE project will provide employment for more than 250 people over the course of the build, with a commitment to providing five local traineeships or apprenticeships for the project. In addition to the existing work force of 420 people cu rrently employed at Shepparton Villages, a further 60 people will be employed to service the new facility once completed.

This new aged care facility will help meet the growing needs of the aged in the region by offering accommodation to residents who require low care right through to those who need high level complex care as well as support for people living with Dementia.

Shepparton Villages CEO, Kerri Rivett said, “This new facility is beautiful and is designed to ensure that residents live in a building that is truly a home within a community.

“This new home for 120 elderly will ensure that residents, family and staff needs are met regardless of what kind

of care is required. It will be quite a landmark for Shepparton and meet the ever-increasing need for residential care in this region.”

The proposed facility, to be constructed on part of land known as Chas Johnson Reserve, has been designed around 4 internal light filled courtyard gardens.

The location of the land has provided a fantastic opportunity, to build a facility with large windows that look over the park and the river.

Shepparton Villages board president, Merushe Asim said this was a significant project for Shepparton.

“T his is a ver y large invest ment for a regional not-for-profit provider and demonstrates the organisation’s unwavering commitment to serving the community of Greater Shepparton,” she said.

Construction is due to begin on the site before the end of the month, with completion slated for mid 2018.

set for an overhaul WITH more than 500,000 rental properties in Victoria, a significant proportion of the state’s population will be impacted by changes to the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA).

E a rl i e r t h i s ye a r, t h e A n d r e w s Government released a comprehensive options paper looking at significant reform of the RTA, which governs the rights and responsibilities of both tenants and landlords in the private rental market in relation to rent, bonds, dispute resolution and security of tenure.

The options paper – Heading for Home - follows more than a year of public consultation, seven issues papers and numerous stakeholder meetings as part of the Government’s Fairer, Safer Housing initiative.

The institute strongly believes pets should only be permitted in rental properties by agreement between landlords and tenants.

for the homeowner AS the welcome temperature changes this autumn, so too should your lawn care.

Even self-proclaimed turf masters can be thrown by the onset of autumn, your lawn’s growth rate slows, and patches of brittle or limp looking grass can appear.

Turf Australia president, Ross Boyle said that pH imbalances in soil can often be blamed for unhealthy looking turf, and why autumn is the ideal time to identify and correct this issue.

“Soil pH levels that are too acidic or too alkaline impair how well your turf absorbs vital nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Ideally your soil should sit between 6 and 8 on the pH scale.

“Autumn is perfect for testing soil pH because any fertiliser or lime added to correct an imbalance works best if allowed to decompose through winter,” Ross said.

Fortunately, testing soil pH is quick and easy, and gives you the answers you need to fix turf that may need some invigoration.

Your step-by-step guide to testing the pH of your soil: 2. GRAB YOUR 3. GET TESTING 1. GEAR UP You can pick up a soil pH Squeeze a few drops of the SAMPLES testing kit (which includes a liquid pH indicator, a white powder and a pH colour chart) for about $20 from your local turf farmer, hardware store or nursery. You will also need a teaspoon and a clean white surface like a spare tile or old plate.

Pick two or three spots across the lawn to obtain your soil samples from.

Choose a patch that appears to be thriving, and another that looks a little worse for wear – it could be a pH imbalance causing distress. Dig out about a teaspoon of soil from just under the surface and place on your tile or plate.

Wait about 30 seconds and you will see the powder start to change colour. Grab your pH chart and match the colours to the scale.

4. ANALYSE RESULTS AND TAKE ACTION Anywhere between 6-8 on the scale is perfect – but if your soil is on the acidic side, you need to add some dolomite lime.

Or if your soil is more alkaline, applying the patch with compost or manure will bring the pH back to normal.

You should re-test your soil every six months to ensure the ongoing health of your turf.

EVERYBODY understands the importance that water has to any community and with two major waterways meeting at the heart of Shepparton, our community relies heavily on it. This is the focus of the latest exhibition at Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), ‘Freshwater,’ which is set to open on Saturday, April 1.

Running until Sunday, June 4, Freshwater considers how water reflects ecological, cultural, political and economic realities.

Through the works of over 20 Australian artists and artist collectives, alongside historic works drawn from the SAM Collection, Freshwater highlights how water remains central to identity, and to how and where we live.

Issues range from ecological concerns about rising salinity, plant and animal environments, refuse and waste, to the inevitable contest around sustainable balances between environmental and agricultural needs. Rivers and waterways

Ladies; ready, aim, fire SHOOTING isn’t gender specific, and that is why the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA) Shepparton Range is holding a ‘Girls with Guns’ event that aims to help teach women how to use a gun.

Running on April 1 from 9:30am at the SSA Shepparton Range, the free event will provide a fun day of learning the ins-andouts pistol, rifle and shotgun use and safety under instruction from licenced instructors.

SPONSORED by Viatek, participants threw themselves into this year’s Numurkah fun run with a gusto. The searing temperatures didn’t stop this day from being a huge success for Numurkah’s St. Joseph’s College.

Viatek account manager, Bevan Hall said, “Viatek happily support the St. Joseph’s Numurkah Fun Run and I personally would’ve joined in the run had I not ended up

tearing my calf muscle!

“The day was a huge success with over 500 people attending and runners included participants of all ages.

The courses were designed to be fun and age appropriate enabling all ages to be involved. It was a great family day out and even though it was a very hot day, it was lots of fun.”

Giving boots another life AFL GOULBURN Murray, in support of Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, is opening its Boot Bank on Friday, March 31 from 2:30pm to 5pm at the AFL Goulburn Murray offices in Kialla.

Boot Bank collection bins have been placed in primary schools over the past few weeks with the call for people to ‘drop in and drop them in.’ The donated boots have been sorted, assessed, washed and fitted with a new pair of Zaidee’s Rainbow laces.

AFL Goulburn Murray region general manager, Martin Gleeson is pleased with the quality of boots collected.

“We have once again had an excellent response from schools, children and their parents in promoting the program and donating their second hand boots,” Martin said.

“We will have lots of boots available on Friday afternoon and most of them are as good as brand new.

“Children grow out of their boots way before they wear them out and this is a great way for old boots to be given a new life as well as for parents to be able to purchase a decent pair of boots at a fraction of the retail cost.

“The focus is to reduce one of the key costs for junior football participation, that is, equipment purchase as well as promoting the important child organ donation messages of Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation.

“As well as donating to Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation the Boot Bank will purchase jumpers for the GV Stars Access All Abilities football team.”

The Boot Bank will be open to the public on Friday, March 31 from 2:30pm to 5pm at AFL Goulburn Murray, Kialla Park Community Centre, Reserve Street, Kialla for parents and players to purchase a pair of recycled boots for the nominal fee of $15.
