‘Open the mall’ traders say

T H E Maude Street Mall should be opened to slow moving traffic according to more than 40 traders who attended a special mall traders/property owners meeting held last week.

The meeting was organised in an attempt to see the formation of a committee to pursue the reopening of the mall to slow moving traffic, with attendees putting their hands up to be a part of the committee.

Pental products en-route to China Production line to boost exporting opportunities

By David Lee THREE 40ft shipping containers packed full of personal hygiene products are currently making their way to China, as part of an investment that hopes to boost exporting opportunities for Pental in Shepparton.

The move will see one million units of Pental’s Country Life Beauty Bars as well as its Australian Series range enter the Chinese market annually, with the local manufacturing plant teaming up with Kreskas Bros Transport to move product from the region to Continued on page 14 Melbourne for shipment.

By David Lee WITH the cold of winter setting in, a donation made to charity by Finny’s Manchester will ensure that those who are homeless or in need will be kept warm.

Towa rd t he end of M ay, Fi n ny ’s Manchester owner, Ray Finn donated over 400 wool quilts from both the Shepparton and Bendigo stores to St Vincent de Paul in Shepparton and St Vincent de Paul and Anglicare in Bendigo, who will pass them along to the homeless and those in need.

Ray said, “When we received the slightly imperfect quilts we bought from a leading manufacturer, including brands such as Sheridan and Tontine, we discovered that they were the incorrect size, which means that they wouldn’t fit the quilt covers and we could not sell them. So we made the decision to donate them to charity.

“I hope that someone who may have had a cold winter will now be nice and warm and we are pleased to have been able to provide support to those who are in need.”

SPC Mooroopna site sells THE SPC site in Mooroopna recently sold to Geoffrey Thompson Holdings Ltd, leaving the local fruit growing and packing company with the opportunity to streamline its operations by moving its logistics and head office to the site.

With Thompsons’ taking possession of the site in mid-September this year, the sale and consolidation of Mooroopna operations into Shepparton is another milestone in SPC’s $100M transformation program. Operations consolidation was one of the agreed actions under the Victorian Government’s $22M funding agreement.

The Mooroopna site was first established in 1921 as the Ardmona Fruit Products Co-Op Limited. The site played a crucial part in Ardmona’s, and later SPC Ardmona’s success, including commencing tomato operations in 1973 and in 1976, becoming the first processor in the world to recognise and satisfy the demand for fruit packed in

natural juice, a move soon followed by other major manufacturers around the world.

SPC managing director, Reg Weine said the deal is positive for SPC and for the local community.

“Thompsons’ is a quality local business and we hope they have as much success at Mooroopna as we have over our near 100 year history. Thompsons’ and SPC have worked closely together for over 25 years.

“The purchase agreement includes a short term lease of warehouse storage back to SPC, and local charity Foodshare will continue to operate out of the premises during this time, which is a good outcome,” Mr Weine said.

Thompsons’ factory manager, Peter Thompson said, “We’re very excited about bringing activity onto the Mooroopna site.

“These premises set up the foundation for our future growth. The opportunities for us are now unlimited.”

Coalition promises $20M job package A $20M Goulburn Valley Jobs and Investment Package could help steer the region from its unemployment rate and grow the workforce, if a Turnbull-Joyce Government is re-elected.

The package will help create local jobs and growth, build a highly skilled local workforce, take advantage of export opportunities and diversify the regional economy.

The package will attract co-investment from businesses and from other levels of government, which will see the total investment in the region expected to exceed $40M. Grants from the package would be awarded through three streams including providing support for businesses to grow and bring forward expansion plans, the building of local infrastructure and the investment in skills and training programs to build a highly skilled local workforce.

The Nationals Candidate for Murray, Damian Drum said he was elated to deliver a Jobs and Investment Package which would be directed by local knowledge and ideas.

“The package will see the region put forward its plan including key strengths and industries which can grow the local economy and employ people in the future.”

Liberal Candidate for Murray, Duncan McGuachie said it was his number one priority to see jobs created for local families and this package will build local skills and drive export opportunities by harnessing local knowledge.

“Key to our jobs and investment package is harnessing local know-how, because locals, not Canberra, know what’s best for our community.

“Our plan for a strong new economy is carefully structured to provide jobs and growth that will secure the future for Goulburn Valley families.”

Minister for Regional Development and Nationals Deputy Leader, Fiona Nash said, “These grants will assist local businesses to grow and expand, as well as encourage new businesses to enter the region, creating new sustainable jobs.”

SCHOOL students from Shepparton had the opportunity of learning to make damper with Aboriginal Community Elders at the Rumbalara Elders Facility this week.

T he st udent s f rom t he Na nga r na H om e work C lub, wh ich i s r u n by Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative, were later able to enjoy sharing stories with the Aboriginal Elders.

The Nangarna Homework Club has been concentrating on cultural awareness during term two, particularly around connections with Elders and building relationships with them.

Community Services at Rumbalara director, Deb Walsh said, “Each component

of our cultural awareness training has been delivered by the Elders, and that is important because it is the Elders who carry the essential knowledge and connection to the country.

“It’s a real privilege for primary and secondary students to be able to gain from the knowledge held by the Elders.

“The students understand the privilege they have, and they treat the Elders with great respect.

“The cultural awareness training also covered other areas such as the family tree, connection to country, Aboriginal history and culture today, and respecting our Elders.”

DO YOU SUPPORT DAMS? Dear Editor, In The Adviser on June 8, 2016, a correspondent raised the issue of an equivalent of the Snowy Scheme to pipe some water East of the divide, inland in Northern NSW. A similar scheme was planned by the Fraser Government in 1983, but was abandoned by the Hawk Government.

Labour Governments have stoped dams in Tasmania and Queensland and de-commissioned a local dam in Mokoan, 350,000ML at Benalla.

Water storage means food production and world population levels have tripled in my lifetime.

If you support dams, don’t vote the Labor Party or The Greens.

WHY THE SUDDEN INTEREST IN DRUMMY? Dear Editor, Given Damian Drum’s new professed pride in being from and focussing on the Goulburn Valley, where does that leave those from the other half of the electorate, the Murray and Loddon Valleys?

You have to ask, where was his pride and efforts as the state member for northern Victoria when our farmers water was being taken away under a coalitions state government which he was part of?

Where were he and The Nationals when SPC was going under? Did he align himself with Barnaby Joyce who said it was a Liberal problem?

Some local Nationals have tried to claim credit ever since, but everyone knows the truth.

One of the least known facts about Damian Drum is that he has been the Upper House Victoria member, covering the Murray electorate for the last 10 years. So where was he during the SPC crisis, the Goulburn Murray Water debacle and the farmers losing water security crisis?

LIBERALS PUT MURRAY LAST BY NEGOTIATING WITH THE GREENS Dear Editor, While Duncan McGauchie laments the loss of water and implies he will be able to do something about it, his Liberal Party have been dealing with The Greens who want to take more water out of the region.

In 2010 the Liberal Party preferenced The Greens in Melbourne over Labor, giving The Greens more power in the Gillard/Green/ Independent rainbow alliance. We must remember that during this government the Murray Darling Basin Plan, which has decimated this region, was finalised. By increasing The Greens power and giving them credibility with their first lower house seat. The outcomes for this region under the basin plan materially worsened.

The Greens want to lift the amount returned to the environment from 2,750GL to at least 7,000GL with the ultimate goal of closing down our irrigation sector. They also want to abolish farmers’ ability to claim the fuel tax rebate when we know industries like dairy are already doing it tough; not to mention their support for a carbon tax and a ban on live exports.

Negotiating with The Greens only means worse outcomes for the bush. And while the Liberals have now finally joined The Nationals, by putting The Greens last they have done a dodgy deal so Labor can protect David Feeney in the seat of Batman in return for Labor, preferencing the Liberals ahead of The Nationals in Murray.

To put this in perspective while The National’s candidates in the Murray Darling Basin are lobbying to move the basin authority into the regions most impacted by the basin plan to lead to more sensible outcomes. Supporting a Liberal candidate may see the basin authority move to South Australia to shore up Liberal seats and this could lead to an even worse outcome for our basin communities.

“I am working on some big plans, but it will take time to roll these out across the venue, it won’t all happen over night. A big part of the business will be a big influence on training at all levels. Patience is a big part of that for everyone.

“We’ve also got some great gigs and dinner shows coming up such as comedy acts like Col Elliott and Joe Avati. So stay tuned.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to reinvigorate and redefine what is one of Shepparton’s, and the region’s, premier venues. It’s such a diverse space and we want to see the venue reach its full potential as the Goulburn Valley’s own venue of choice.

“I’m so appreciative for the opportunity and to the board for entrusting me in this undertaking, it’s very progressive and it’s not something that will be taken for granted. I’m very proud of the respect and trust from the community that has been shown to me since moving here nine

AS part of the meeting, attendees also discussed trader support in relation to opening hours and trading days, with Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and

Industry representatives pressing hard on the issue, suggesting it was time that traders step up and get some uninformed trading so that consumers knew when businesses would be open.

Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, Leanne Hulm said, “Traders and land owners agree that something needs to be done and it needs to be addressed quickly “Traders are frustrated and don’t understand why the debate is still going on, why council are not listening to traders’ feedback and keep saying that there isn’t a firm consensus around moving forward with the CBD revitalisation.

“Ian Bugg asked for a show of hands as to who of the traders would like to be part of the small committee. It was good to see a number of traders willing to form the committee to work with chamber and other traders help lobby council on this important issue.

“All traders that attended the meeting were 100 percent in agreeance to open the Maude Street Mall to slow moving traffic”

“We have spent time researching what’s winning in the market and have tailored our packing to suit.

We have some capacity in our current lines, so we are sweating those assets and these additional sales will underpin our current base and allow us to start the progression towards our long term vision for our soap manufacturing plant.”

The convertible sports a 302 Windsor motor, mild cam, balanced pistons, is an automatic and has a shift kit installed.

Grunter said, “I like convertibles and was quite taken by it when I saw it for sale.

I actually swapped my Harley for it.

“I had to get it resprayed, which Mick Doherty did a brilliant job of. I also had the upholstery re-done and put new carpet throughout.

“My nickname is Grunter and I had GRNTER as my number plate on the Harley and was lucky enough to get it for the car.

“It certainly has the wow factor. My wife and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it.”

Grappling for bronze IT was a double medal win for students of GV Martial Arts Jiu Jitsu, with two coming away with a bronze medal at the Grappling Industries Melbourne Round Robin Tournament.

As the third Grappling Industries’ competition the club has entered, it was head coach, Jason Farren and assistant coach, Kye Hardie who returned victorious.

Jason said, “In the whole competition there were 300 competitors but I went up against four and Kye went up against five.

“I went up against a couple of purple belts, which are one level above me in the Advanced Masters U86kg division. When I went up against a blue belt competitor, I

foot locked him to get him to tap out and that lead me to win the bronze. I was really happy with my performance.

“It’s not really about winning medals anymore, it’s about seeing how my Jiu Jitsu has improved and that’s what I teach my students.”

Kye said, “I was paired with competitors all of the same rank as me in the Intermediate U76kg division.

“I won my first match outright and overall was judged to be the winner of two draws.

“It was a lot of fun and being the first competition I have been in for a year, I was happy to come away with bronze.”

Contracts awarded for athletics track and boulevard

RACING TO A WIN… Local resident, Madi Healey went up against 30 competitors, all boys, to take out second overall in the Junior Motocross Victorian Titles in Mildura earlier this month.

Madi motors to second place SHE was the only girl racing in her class and went up against 30 others, but that didn’t stop local resident, Madi Healey from placing second overall at the Junior Motocross Victorian Titles in Mildura earlier this month.

Madi said, “I’m pretty happy with the overall result.

“Coming up to round three in April, I fractured my wrist and dislocated my shoulder during practice for the Ararat Round Three Victoria Titles.

“I raced round three and got fourth overall even with a fractured wrist.

“In the final round at the Junior Victorian Titles I placed first, which was a good feeling.

“I am looking forward to the Hattah Desert Race this weekend, which I won last year and am looking to do again.

“After that I will be racing in the Australian Junior Titles in South Australia in last week of September.”

NEXT PHASE SET TO GO… Contracts were awarded to Tuff Turf N Co and Mawson Constructions for the athletics track and boulevard precinct as part of the Greater Shepparton Regional Sports Precinct.

Mawson Construction has been advised that all recreation facilities will need to remain accessible to pedestrians while works are conducted. Vehicle access will be very limited except for emergency vehicles. Works will begin in July and will take approximately seven months to complete depending on weather.

Council also awarded the tender to Tuff Turf N Co for the upgrade to the Athletics track. Works will cost $890,000

Work will involve the removal of the turf track and the installation of a synthetic running track and a synthetic area will also be constructed to provide space for two high jump areas and a javelin runup area. Construction works will take six months. During this time the Little Athletics Association will relocate to the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve to conduct their competition from October to December this year.

Greater Sheppar ton Cit y Cou ncil Mayor, Cr Dinny Adem said, “Now with the boulevard and athletics track contracts being awarded we will begin to really see the changes at the sports precinct.

“I wou ld also li ke to t ha n k t he Little Athletics Association for their understanding and patience for being relocated during the works. I am sure the short term relocation will be worthwhile in the long term for a new athletics track.”

All you have to do is write the name of each participating business beside the team they are representing and then place a tick against the football team that you think will win each game. If no correct entry is received the prize will jackpot each week until a correct entry is submitted.

Draws between two teams will only be recognised if a tick is placed beside both teams.

GVFL Hall Of Fame to induct its first legend THE Goulburn Valley Football League will induct a third group of members at the annual Hall of Fame function to be held on Sunday, July 3 at the Shepparton RSL. The invitation only event is a major one on the league’s calendar and for the third year in a row eight of the league’s past stars will be inducted into the Hall of Fame to recognise their crucial role in making the league what it is today.

A major highlight of this year’s event will be the induction of the first legend into the Hall of Fame. The legend will be elevated from the current 16 Hall of Fame members.

G V F L H a l l of Fa me C om m it te e chairman, Freddo McMahon is delighted with the success of the Hall of Fame and is looking forward to the auspicious annual event.

“The GVFL Board has appointed a committee of eminent football people who have the responsibility of researching the

GVFL history and recommending people to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“T he com mit tee considers the p er for m a nc e s of player s , coache s , administrators and media people for induction and recognition of their services.

“This year the committee will consider more people who have not only excelled on the football field, but have contributed to the league as coaches, interleague players and administrators.

“Amongst this year’s inductees are two administrators who have been instrumental in shaping the league, a celebrated interleague coach and one of the best ever goal kickers in country football.

“Whilst the identity of the first legend to be elevated will only be announced on the night suffice is to say it will be one of the first 16 Hall of Famers inducted over the past two years.”
