Farming water fight

By David Lee MORE than 120 people turned out to rally together outside Goulburn Murray Water (GMW) in Tatura last week, in a fight that hopes to draw attention to struggling farmers, water inefficiencies and water delivery fees and charges.

Organised by the Goulburn Valley Water Action Group (GV WAG), local Victoria Farmers Federation (VFF) groups, farmers, irrigators, small and large agribusinesses and concerned community members, the rally aimed to highlight the plight and concerns on issues surrounding water prices, water trading, fees and charges, delivery efficiencies and state and federal government water policies.

Book competition winners announced

By Sarah Knight THE winners of the Greater Shepparton C om mu n it y L it erac y B o ok Wr it i ng Competition for Grades 5 and 6 students within the Greater Shepparton area were announced on Friday, August 28, with three students from Bourchier St Primary School being presented with a professionally printed copy of their book.

‘I Live on a Farm’ by Danielle Tolliday, Ella Rohde and Lachlan Mitchell was the winning story for 2015. The proud winners also received a certificate to acknowledge their efforts with the book that was written for three year olds.

T he B ook Writi ng Competition is an initiative of the Greater Shepparton Community Literacy Workgroup and was designed to celebrate young, local talent.

Students were asked to write and illustrate an original story and could partner with other students if they wanted to. The competition was open to all Greater Shepparton Primary Schools, with each school able to choose up to three entries to submit for judging.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager, Children and Youth Services, Sally Rose said, “We received 16 fantastic entries from six different primary schools. The quality of the entries received was very high, this year’s

creative and colourful illustrations really added to the children’s stories. The judging panel certainly had the very difficult task selecting the winner.”

The winning students’ school also receives a $100 voucher to spend on books and all runners-up receive a certificate as well.

A copy of all 16 stories submitted will be placed in the Shepparton, Mooroopna and Tatura libraries for the community to view and a copy of the winning story will also be sent to every primary school in Greater Shepparton.

A terrific incentive to promote the joy of literacy by the Greater Shepparton Community Literacy Workgroup.

Dedicated volunteers produce another exciting stage show

By Sarah Knight IT TAKES a variety of skills to produce a stage show; often a dedicated cast and crew of over 100 people is required to volunteer both their time and energy to ensure a successful production.

The Shepparton Theatre Arts Group (STAG) is made up of a group of such dedicated volunteers; local people with a vision to create a connection within the community, through performing arts.

Co-Producer of the up-coming I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change stage show, Bron Prater told The Adviser, “Often people don’t think about what it takes to get a show to production; from the initial concept stage to enlisting a director and producers, to the casting, marketing and music, there’s a lot of work involved. The teamwork of our volunteers is imperative in the process of bringing the vision to life.”

Concept discussions for the new show, which opens Thursday, September 17, began late last year with the cast heading into rehearsals just three months ago.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is set to be a hilarious romp through the often challenging world of relationships; from first date nerves and meeting the parents, to tying the knot and navigating the world together. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change takes you through a whole gamut of relationship do’s and don’ts!

The show first opened off-Broadway in 1996 where it ran for more than 5,000 performances. The dedicated STAG team are now eagerly anticipating opening night at the Bakehouse Blackbox Theatre, 17 Wheeler Street Shepparton. Fundraising journey supports Canteen

By Sarah Knight FRIENDSHIP On The Move Inc have their sights set on raising more than $5,000 to support kids in need with their great new incentive The Big Push; a wheelbarrow journey from Numurkah to Yarrawonga.

Friendship On The Move Inc Founder and Director, Brian Devinish and Participant In Training, Andrew Crocker came up with the idea for The Big Push after Brian was approached by Canteen to personally donate to the organisation. After some consideration and further research into the organisation the two decided there was more that they could do.

Brian said, “I realised that Canteen is a pretty special organisation, there are many charities that support kids with cancer and many that support adults; but Canteen is the one organisation that offers support to teenagers and young adults who are suffering with the disease.”

So on Friday, October 30, at 10am Brian and Andrew will set off from the Telegraph Hotel in Numurkah, pushing one another in a wheelbarrow for the 61km journey to Yarrawonga on the border.

Members of the community are invited to come along and show their support by pledging sponsoring per km or making a donation to the cause.

Mim’s milestone,

celebrating a century BORN in Melbourne 1915, Shepparton resident, Mim Guilfoyle has just celebrated a milestone occasion, turning 100 years old last Friday.

Mim told The Adviser she was pleased to have received about ‘6 or 7 letters’ of acknowledgement in celebration of the significant occasion.

“I received a lovely letter from the Governor General, one from the Queen of England, our Prime Minister and several Victorian MPs.” Mim, who currently lives in Tarcoola Village, has spent the majority of her life living in the Shepparton area, she said, “Shepparton’s a lovely place to live and the staff at Shepparton Villages have been wonderful to me.

“I’ve had a good life; I’ve played a lot of bowls, I travelled a lot, overseas and around Australia. I always took holidays, every year and have always been active. “I think life is what you make it and you’ve got to live it up whilst you can.”

Mim said her secret to a long and happy life was to always look after her health and her family. She said of her family, “I don’t think we’ve ever had a quarrel, we always help one another, have a happy home and never want for anything more.

Over 100 of Mim’s relations and friends turned out at her birthday celebrations on Saturday, including two of her sons, her seven grand children, 12 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

GOULBURN Valley Libraries are calling all poets and storywriters to get their entries in for the 2015 Joseph Furphy Commemorative Literary Prize.

Now in its twenty-third year, the annual competition, which is sponsored by The Furphy Foundry Pty Ltd, was inaugurated in 1993 to commemorate 150 years since the birth of Author, Joseph Furphy.

The competition is divided into two sub categories; poetry and short stories.

Entrants can submit poetry pieces in their choice of style, on any subject and will be judged in two categories.

The Youth Section awards a prize of $75 for a poem of up to 30 lines and is open to entrants up to 18 years of age.

The second category, the Open Section carries a prize of $150 for a poem of up to 40 lines.

Entries for the Short Story Competition will be judged in three categories. The Junior Section, for entrants up to 12 years of age carries a prize of $50 for a story of up to 1,500 words. The Youth Section, for entrants aged 13 to 18, carries a prize of $100 for a story of up to 3,000 words and the Open Section, which awards the winner a prize of $300 for a short story with a maximum word limit of 3,500 words.

Letters to the Editor MURRAY BASIN RAIL CONCERNS

Dear Editor, There is a risk the once-in-a-lifetime Murray Basin rail upgrade will never be completed, given the Andrews Labor Government has not provided an extra dollar towards it.

This week Daniel Andrews claimed his government would deliver the $416M project – but he’s at least $196M short.

He also claimed the project would involve upgrading the Murrayville line to Ouyen – but it’s been excluded from the business case.

The former Liberal-Nationals Government provided $220M for the Murray Basin Rail Project in last year’s State Budget and since then the Andrews Labor Government has not provided a single extra dollar.

Labor has its hopes pinned on asking the Federal Government to stump up the difference, despite the fact the Murray Basin rail line upgrade is a state responsibility.

Victorian Labor governments have a habit of making grand promises with no money behind them.

Daniel Andrews needs to step up and explain how he will fund the remaining $196M. Otherwise I fear it will end up as another botched Labor project and countless farmers and exporters will be let down.

The sale of Rural Finance last year netted around $460M for the state – why is Daniel Andrews refusing to use the remainder of that money for this vital project?

If Daniel Andrews wants Federal Government funding, it should be to increase the axle loading of the rail lines to 23 tonnes – an eligible transcontinental project that would accommodate heavier freight trains and increase speeds to allow 24 hour turnaround from

RESPONSE TO DRAINAGE ARTICLE Dear Editor, I write to express concerns about comments in an article printed in The Adviser last week relating to proposed drainage works associated with the VicRoads roundabout duplication at the intersection of Doyles Rd and Midland Highway in Shepparton East.

The drainage works being undertaken by VicRoads and Greater Shepparton City Council - are for the purposes of providing effective drainage for the new roundabout and to build a high capacity spine from the Midland Highway to an enlarged retardation basin at Council’s Doyles Rd Complex. The spine will ultimately provide a backbone for improved drainage for commercial, industrial, rural and residential landholders in this catchment should the proposed Shepparton East Drainage Special Charge Scheme be declared by Council at its September Ordinary Council Meeting.

The Special Charge Scheme, should it be declared, will result in vastly improved drainage levels of service in the catchment with landholders only required to contribute approximately 40 percent of the costs of these improvements. By its very nature, a Special Charge Scheme ensures that the costs contributed by landholders are equitable and are in proportion to the benefits received by the landholders.

The spine will be built under an easement on Mr Thompson’s property as outlined in The Adviser article, however, it is not feasible for

Mr Thompson to directly pipe into the drainage system. If Mr Thompson’s business, and others in close proximity, were allowed to redirect their own drainage to the spine, they would receive an unfair advantage over other scheme contributors simply by virtue of the close proximity of the businesses to the first stage of works. Council is proposing to introduce a scheme that is fair and equitable for all Shepparton East landowners, not a scheme that favours one over another.

The proposed Shepparton East Drainage Special Charge Scheme is being considered by Council at the Ordinary meeting on September 15, 2015.

RESPONSE TO I HAY Dear Editor, I enjoyed yet another letter by I Hay in The Adviser on July 26, where they referred to one of God’s design rules of the ‘judge not’ policy.

I Hay continued to indicate that if people did not agree and/or conform with God’s, and his own, beliefs then ‘quote’ is a fool ‘unquote.’

If it is God’s will that we are made the way we are, which we are all individuals, then by sheer analysis and calculation, God must have made homophobes also.

Also, God made cancer, diabetes and all the sickness yet to arrive from our current lifestyles and beliefs in modern medical practices.

SHEED HAS CONCEDED DEFEAT Dear Editor, It was disappointing to read in the media on Saturday, August 29 that the Member for Shepparton, Suzanna Sheed has already conceded the Labor Government will not fund the redevelopment of GV Health and she is now making a desperate plea to the Liberal party to fund stage one at the next election, which is now more than three years away.

In calling on the liberals to fund stage one, Ms Sheed is admitting that she has conceded the Labor Government is unlikely to commit funding to commence this desperately needed upgrade of our hospital in this term of government.

The liberals have already demonstrated their commitment to this project at the last election, when they made a commitment to fund stage one of the hospital.

Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell has been a tireless advocate for our hospital over many years and I believe she is correct in saying the redevelopment cannot be put off for more than three years before it is funded.

I have confidence that even though Ms Sheed has conceded defeat, Wendy Lovell will deliver for Shepparton by continuing her strong advocacy to force the Labor Government to fund our hospital.

During last year’s election campaign, Ms Sheed promised so much to the Shepparton electorate and I am unaware of anything that she has delivered and now it seems she has conceded only the liberals will deliver this much needed funding for Shepparton.

APPLYING for and obtaining your first job can be a confronting experience, especially as a teenager; it can be challenging to navigate the workforce and know how to interact and behave with colleagues, clients or customers. Undertaking a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) whilst completing secondary schooling is a great way to get a foot in the door.

Partners in Training Australia offer school students, 15 years and older, the opportunity to undertake a SBAT program at its Shepparton Campus.

The SBAT also provides study pathways into university, as students can obtain credits towards their VCE or VCAL. Before discovering the SBAT program at Partners in Training, year 11 Shepparton High School student Jacinta Vivona was considering dropping out of school. A labour of love RESTORING his grandfather’s EH Holden Premier to its original condition has been a labour of love for Lance Gordon. Purchased brand new from a dealer in 1964, the car was driven by Lance’s grandfather for just six years before he passed it down the line to his son, Lance’s dad.

Lance said, “My parents owned a ute at the time, so when I was born they needed to upgrade to a sedan. My grandfather gave them the EH and they drove it for another four years before putting it up on the blocks in the shed.” And there it sat for 40 years, until Lance pulled it out in 2013 and decided to restore it to is original condition

in celebration of its 50 year anniversary in 2014.

Lance said, “I did what’s called a closeddoor-spray, repainting the exterior to the original shade - Valley Mist Green, but leaving all of the interior as original.”

Lance said he takes the EH out as much as he can and enjoys entering it in local shows such as the Numurkah Show ‘N’ Shine; where he said, “There’s always someone who ‘had one in the family’ and people really appreciate seeing them restored.”

Lance is keen to continue to use the car for many years to come, but plans to one day pass it on to his own son.

Robert Danieli from the GVWAG said, “We gathered to highlight to the GMW board that they need to be doing a better job at looking after their irrigators, who are already coping with increases in fees and charges that are exuberant.

“Are they trying to get rid of agriculture in this area?

“What we want is a connection program, we want them to be transparent and work on how they relate to people as well as work on water pricing for both temporary and permanent water, trading rules and carry-over, which has been a disaster.

“People have done a lot of work on their properties and GMW restrict the amount of water allowances to them. It simply isn’t right.”

West Goulburn VFF President, Wade Northausen said, “We have spoken to state governments and offered solutions to issues. This is the biggest threat that irrigation has seen in its existence.

“We’ve got a problem and we needed to address it and fix it.

“There are at least 50 percent of farmers who are reliant on the temporary water and the rest have some reliance.

“If we start to lose that 50 percent, it will affect everyone, from irrigators to industries across the region, communities and jobs. There will be a snowball effect.

“Hopefully this is the start of something big. We have to change the political landscape.

“Any of the extremists, environmental lobbyists who support the Murray Darling Basin Plan are supporting the death of this region.”

Bushrangers spectacular comeback secures their third place finish AFTER a disappointing match the weekend before, the Murray Bushrangers have cemented their third place finish on the TAC Cup ladder after a 76 point victory in their final round clash with Bendigo Pioneers at Rochester.

The win sees the Bushrangers’ secure the double chance and head into finals with momentum. Clayton Oliver showed his capabilities with six goals moving between the midfield and forward line.

The Bushrangers’ began the contest kicking against the breeze, and Ruckman, Max Canfield gave his midfielders great service. Oliver, along with Murray Waite, provided excellent run and drove the ball forward out of congestion. Defenders, Nick Coughlan and Dylan McDonald were superb and rebounded the ball long to benefit their team mates. However The Pioneers’ were able to hit back through draft prospects, Tom Cole and midfielder, Joseph Atley. Atley is the brother of former Bushranger’ and now North Melbourne player Shaun Atley.

The margin at the first break was just four points in the Bushrangers’ favour with Bendigo having one more scoring shot than their opponents. The second term was a tense affair but the Bushrangers’ continued to rebound the ball with Coughlan, McDonald, Brady Sharp, Louis Pinnuck and the Lachlan Tiziani using their run and carry delivering to the forwards.

Oliver continued to own the football and gathered numerous contested possessions and kick goals. Late inclusion, Luke McKeown was strong in his marking attempts and kicked a beautiful goal to see the Bushrangers’ extend their lead to 18 points with seven minutes to the siren. Bendigo was able to settle and kicked an answering goal; however with Josh Minogue and Max Lynch providing the Bushrangers’ targets up forward, the scoreboard was being peppered.

At the half time siren, the Bushrangers’ were out to a 15 point lead.

After being refocussed at the halftime break by Head Coach, Darren Ogier and Line Coaches, Ross Hill, Adam Mudra, Ben Davey and Peter McIntyre, the Murray boys came out full of run and Max Canfield continued his excellent game with a goal to extend the lead.

At the eight minute mark, Josh Minogue kicked a long goal after a great contested mark and the Bushrangers’ lead was 25 points.

The Bushrangers’ continued to win possessions and the young brigade of Harry Morrison, Isaac Wallace, Fletcher Carroll and James Cousins were hard in their ball winning ability and used the ball to advantage to see Minogue kick another goal and then, on the siren, Zach Sproule marked and after opposition backchat was gifted a goal on the line and the lead of 53 points at the last change.

Betson takes out Keating Medal MOOROOPNA’S Keelin Betson took out the prestigious Keating Medal as the U16 Division 1 Best and Fairest at the Shepparton District Junior Football League annual Vote Count and Presentation Night at Shepparton Swans recently.

In front of a large crowd, the night started with the ‘Owen Power’ Best and Fairest Medal in the Professionals Under 14 Competition being awarded to Shepparton United’s Future Star, Jye Chalcraft running away with 40 out of a possible 42 votes for the season.

NO WINNER ROUND 22. JACKPOT $300 Football Followers have the chance to WIN BIG during the 2015 AFL football season with the Viatek/The Adviser Football Tipping Competition proudly supported by 18 businesses throughout the Goulburn Valley.

Each week there will be a prize of $100 to be spent at any of the 18 supporting business houses.

Each of the 18 participating business houses corresponds with one of the AFL football clubs. All you have to do is write the name of each participating business beside the team they are representing and then place a tick against the football team that you think will win each game. Be careful with your selections as only correct entries will go into the draw for the weekly $100 shopping voucher.

If no correct entry is received the prize will jackpot each week until a correct entry is submitted.

Draws between two teams will only be recognised if a tick is placed beside both teams.

Entries will only be accepted by post or hand delivery no later than 5.00pm on each Friday during 2015, unless stated otherwise due to matches being played outside the normal weekend. Entries must be on original forms – no faxes or photocopies will be accepted and only one entry per person is permitted. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

By Kyle Power ROCHESTER vs KYABRAM 98.5 ONEFM BROADCAST GAME LIVE 1PM THE game of the round by far with both sides recording big wins in Round 17, Rochester secures the minor premiership for the first time since 2009. The Tigers are playing some really good football and are spreading their goalkickers around with the mercurial Steven Stroobants on fire this season with 55 goals, also well supported by Dylan Cuttriss (32) and Captain, Elliott Bowen (29). Rochester are playing a different style of football under James Flaherty this season with a high possession game being the cornerstone of their victories. They will want to fine tune themselves heading into the final series in this game against Kyabram who have been near flawless in the last month. Big victories and some of their stars hitting form, bodes well for a side under Justin Sherman that will challenge for the premiership. Could this be a preview to a preliminary final?

Players to watch - Dylan Cuttriss (Rochester) & Hayden Gemmill (Kyabram) MOOROOPNA vs SHEPPARTON Mooroopna will look to finish off the season with some respectability after a gutsy win against Shepparton United and look to send club stalwart Blake Campbell off in style. Campbell has resigned from the senior coaching position last week due to personal reasons but his commitment, game knowledge and passion cannot be questioned. The Cats have been ultra defensive in the back half of the year which in turn has affected their ability to score and win games only scoring over 100 points three times this season. With Daniel Lewis gone from the Cattery and question marks remaining on Kane Boyer and Brent Arho’s availability in this game, there’s a sneaky

chance Shepparton could snatch an unlikely victory. Shepparton Coach, Brad Campbell has been noted as saying the young Bears are ‘looking for the finishing line’ to the season and a spirited effort here against the Cats is all that’s required to round out what has been a slight improvement on last year’s 9th position finish.

A win here for either side will gather a touch of momentum heading into 2016.

Players to watch - Shane McDonald (Mooroopna) & Harry Boyd (Shepparton) ECHUCA vs TATURA Can the Bulldogs shake this monkey off their backs and post win number one in the last game? Don’t be mistaken by these two sides’ ladder position, this game will be a cracker.

Echuca who have been a disappointment this season will look to have a win in front of the home crowd faithful. Coach Andrew Briggs pulled the boots on last week and will be better for the run if he does play this weekend.

Echuca have used 41 players in the seniors this year so blooding new talent has been the focus however it’s now time to start seeing improvement within their squad. With players like Beattie, Buckley, Pollock, Dehne and Florence roaming around the ground expect a solid showing. Tatura who in the last two weeks have lost by an average margin of 115 points albeit to Kyabram and Rochester, have dropped away and the confidence the group lost after that heartbreaking loss to Mansfield a couple of weeks ago is telling. A win can change everything, and there’s a massive opportunity in this game. The historians will be scrambling around after this if the Bullies happen to lose as it would be quite some time since Tatura have gone winless in a home and away season. For their sake I hope it doesn’t happen.
