Shoplifting costing Shepparton businesses a fortune “Enough is enough … it will force us out of business”

By David Lee A RECENT shoplifting incident at a popular Shepparton retailer has left the owners and staff issuing a warning to other retailers across the city, to beef up their security and not to be too lenient on shoplifters that are caught, and have also called for further action to be taken by local police.

The retailer, who has chosen to remain anonymous, is one of several major and small businesses around the region The Adviser has spoken to, with all reporting that they are losing thousands of dollars through the heinous acts undertaken by shoplifters, and more often than not these acts are carried out by repeat offenders.

According to the latest Australian Institute of Criminology the estimated cost losses to retailers nationally comes to $7.5B, a staggering number that could leave some smaller businesses high and dry and ‘staring

down the barrel’ at store closures.

A local retailer spokesperson said, “This is becoming a major issue in the town.

“There are many other retailers we have spoken to around Shepparton who are dealing with the same issue on a daily basis.

“The types of people who are shoplifting don’t think twice about who it hurts or who it affects.

“A lot of the time they get away with it because we’re giving the best possible service and attention to the customers we are serving and so they go unnoticed.

“Shoplifting costs us thousands of dollars a month, every month of the year due to the lost stock, the hiring of extra staff to man the doors, as well as installation of security cameras and alarms. It’s really quite sad. We never used to have to do this.

“The local retailers realise that the police are very busy with other issues, but we need

action; action where people are charged and punished for the crime they commit.

“Enough is enough. If people keep going like this, it will force us out of business.

“To the shoplifters; you will get caught.

We will prosecute, we are aware of who the repeat offenders are and we do have surveillance.

“This is a warning to other retailers to put measures in place to help prevent shoplifters and when they do catch one, not to be too lenient on them.”

New basin authority chair appointed THE Murray–Darling Basin Authority has announced that it would be appointing Neil Andrew as the next Chair of the authority, taking the reins from Craig Knowles.

Neil said, “I’ve lived on the river for 40 years and I understand how important it is to the many people who live along it. For my entire parliamentary life, my family camped on the river every year and I still own a property that abuts it.

“I was the Member for Wakefield where I represented the area from the border to Mannum, both sides of the river. So, I’m well aware of the many different views people can have about how to best use and manage a water resource. In fact, the river got a run in my ‘maiden speech.’

“Also, having been an irrigator myself I know the economic importance of water for people’s livelihoods. I also know that irrigators want to use their water efficiently and most have discovered, as I did, increased productivity as a result of installing modern watering techniques. I believe I can bring many experiences and perspectives to this role.

“I’m aware that the Basin Plan is already delivering some improvements to the basin

such as making it possible to do watering at selected environmental sites.

“Of course, another drought would still pose a new set of problems, but the Basin Plan will have us, and important sites across the basin, better-placed to deal with those longer drier periods than previously. That’s what it’s designed to do.

“I’m also very conscious that there is still a lot of work to do to implement the Basin Plan.

“It’s important to recognise that we all have the same objective, we all want a healthy river that we can use for many different purposes.”

Multimillion dollar showgrounds upgrade to accommodate growth THE Shepparton Showgrounds is currently undergoing a $1.5M overhaul to accommodate for the ground’s growing needs, with works expected to be completed by mid March this year.

With more than 70,000 attendees to events at the showgrounds in the last financial year, upgrades will be made to the main arena to increase and improve the grassed surfaces and improve drainage and irrigation.

As part of the upgrades, a new, larger open space grassed arena will be installed, as well as two new light towers and a bitumen promenade to link the current west and east lights, with power boxes along the promenade improving lighting conditions.

A new toilet block adjacent to the eastern multipurpose pavilion will also be constructed to service events and the new open space area and will comprise of 10 new toilets including an all abilities toilet.

The project, which has been contracted to local business Jarvis Delahey Contractors Pty Ltd, has been made possible through a $500,000 state government contribution, with remaining costs covered in council’s budget.

Greater Shepparton City Council Direct Infrastructure, Steve Bowmaker said, “The previous arena had no irrigation, was not level, some of it was made up of gravel which created dusty environments at events. The whole open space area was prone to flooding, which was a major concern not only for existing events but also for attracting new events.

“The top soil is being stripped off and imported sand from Mulwala will be placed

over the top in a 250mm layer and sprigged with couch grass in March to allow for optimal growing conditions before winter sets in.

“This much needed project will provide significant improvements for major events and user groups at the site including the Shepparton Show, Shepparton Swap Meet, Rotary Car and Market Show and Spring Cat Nationals.

“It will also provide an inviting gateway at the east entrance to Shepparton.”

Seniors facility to be brought up to date

By David Lee REDEVELOPMENT works are set to commence on the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre this month, that will see the facility brought up to date and make it more ‘user friendly’ for the community and visitors who utilise the centre.

Expected to be completed by the middle of this year and come to a cost of $400,000, the upgrades have been brought about due to facilities having become dank from frequent plumbing issues, lifting floor tiles and ceiling collapses.

The redevelopment will include an upgrade of the toilets, cosmetic improvements and enhanced accessibility, such as external universal access toilet, lift access to the stage and widened door widths throughout the building, commercial kitchen works and the relocation of existing plumbing.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Neighbourhoods, Amanda Tingay said the ongoing deterioration of the building had made the centre an out-dated, unpleasant and unattractive venue.

“The council has made budget provisions in previous financial years for the upgrade although these have not progressed due to a number of factors.

“Council commitment will ensure that the building meets future needs and community expectations for a functional, attractive facility.”

Museums collaborate to bring motor enthusiasts’ dreams to life NEXT month will see Shepparton Art Museum’s (SAM) walls draped in American car design mastery, when for the first time in Australia 130 drawings from the Dream Machines: Drawings of the Great American Automobile will go on exhibit.

As well as original design sketches of post World War II American cars, the works include up to 25 images of actual concept cars that were designed by automobile designers who were commissioned to capture the spirit of the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s ‘dream car’ concepts, in order to explore new technical features and aesthetic possibilities.

To coincide with the exhibition at SAM, the Shepparton Motor Museum will present an exhibition of superb examples of vehicles depicted in the drawings, titled Dream Machines: The Cars. Both exhibitions will run concurrently and be co-ticketed, with an opening party and Show ‘n’ Shine parade between the two venues on Saturday, March 14.

SAM Director, Kirsten Paisley said, “This exhibition is an opportunity for visitors to see (for the first time) the original drawings from which American cars were first imagined, and through SAM’s exciting partnership with the Shepparton Motor Museum, view the vehicles themselves.

Working with the Shepparton Motor Museum has been a wonderful collision of two worlds, with the art museum and the car museum celebrating the incredible draftmanship and creativity of the designers and an era of extreme optimism and excitement for the future.”

Letters to the Editor CHALLENGE FOR ROAD USERS

Dear Editor, I find it amazing at just how many people are driving on our roads and don’t seem to really know what they are doing; either that or common sense and courtesy both vanish when people get behind the wheel. There are so many times while I have been driving to or from work and have either almost been cleaned up by a driver who clearly wasn’t paying attention or have witnessed drivers not using indicators, talking on mobile phones, weaving in and out of traffic and speeding. I wonder where the police seem to be in these cases. Many years back I was caught speeding in Melbourne, this was due to the signed area being changed without my notice and I wasn’t paying attention when driving past the sign, but I was pulled over and fined and I now make it my business to ensure I am paying more attention.

It shocks me sometimes when I see some of the things that drivers do on our roads and wonder what would happen if a child stepped out from behind a parked car while one of those drivers decided they wanted to speed or if while not indicating they cause an accident with another vehicle.

We have already had 24 people die on our roads in Victoria this year, two of those on Greater Shepparton’s roads and while most of these accidents can be put down to fatigue or other causes, reckless or careless driving are extremely dangerous and down right rude. I challenge drivers in the region to be sure to begin indicating at least five seconds prior to turning at an intersection and to take your

time on the roads, because speeding won’t really get you there faster if you get pulled over by the police or have an accident.

GOD TEACHES TO USE THE HEART

Dear Editor, No matter how you dress it up, murder is murder. When you kill unarmed, defenceless people, whether it is for insulting the prophet or a judge giving the sanction to kill a prisoner it makes no difference.

Islam and society both have laws against killing as an injustice, but both have not any compassion about killing for revenge.

God created man to be on Earth to learn spiritual lessons and anybody who kills is actually going against God’s will and using his own will. God is love only.

It was man who created religions where God is seen as a revengeful, lightning chucking, ‘I’m gunna get you for that’ God. As love only, God, as a loving father, would not give anybody the right to kill, nor condemn his children to eternal damnation.

All of that was made up by the religious for power and control of the people.

God’s only command to man is to act out of love, from the heart and to use the heart instead of words and the mind … or the weapon.

CRYING FOUL Dear Editor, Lawyers and the Australian Government are working overtime to save Sukumaran and Chan from an Indonesian firing squad. Why is the Australian Government so keen to save their lives?

Australians may have forgotten, but it was the Australian Federal Police (AFP) who tipped off the Indonesian authorities about the drug runners in 2005. This came about when the parents of one of the Bali Nine told the AFP what their son was planning to do, in the hope the AFP would intervene and stop their son from going on his ill fated trip to Indonesia.

Instead, the AFP, being “good” international co-operative citizens, dobbed them in to the Indonesians who were waiting for them at the airport while on their way back to Australia, with drugs strapped to their bodies.

The AFP could have easily ‘kept mum’ and arrested the drug runners when they landed on Australian soil. This all happened when John Howard was PM. It is odd, that now with a Liberal administration, PM Tony Abbott, all are crying foul when two of the Bali Nine are facing death.

I wonder if anyone is having an attack of the guilt’s over this sordid affair?

Speed limit change at dangerous intersection A NUMBER of serious accidents along the Shepparton Alternative Route has forced VicRoads to extend the current 80km/h speed zone from Grahamvale Primary School by 450 metres north of Ford Road, reducing the 100km/h speed zone in the area.

A VicRoads spokesperson said, “Reducing the speed limit in this area will slow drivers down on their approach to the Shepparton Alternative Route Grahamvale Road/Ford Road intersection, and reduce the risk of further crashes in this area.

“It is expected the new signs will be installed during the week.

Precious memories shared for the first time A SPECIAL MOMENT… Locals, Elaine Deer and Tracey Ramsay shared a special and unforgettable moment this week, meeting for the first time ever after having realised they were second cousins through seeing a photo that ran in The Adviser. WITH their families having lost connection when they were very young, both Elaine and Tracey had been attempting to piece together their respective family trees, and when Tracey opened The Adviser to the weekly Snapshots of Shepparton’s Past piece that featured the Guy family, she couldn’t believe her luck; this was her long lost family.

The women, who have come to realise they are second cousins, sat with smiles wide on their faces while sharing laughter as well as tales of their family’s past.

Tracey, 54, said, “I’ve been looking into my family tree and was having trouble with the Guy side. I hired a genealogist to look into it who put a genealogy chart together for me.

“Coming across the piece in the newspaper was just pure luck.

I decided to peruse the paper to see what was happening around Shepparton and saw the old photos. I actually thought to myself, wouldn’t it be funny if that was the Guy family and nearly fell off my chair when I noticed that it was. I couldn’t believe it.

“It’s so wonderful to have this connection with family that you didn’t know you had.

“It’s been very emotional for me.

“I’ve actually felt like I’ve been sort of like an orphan for a long time but now I’ve found my family.”

Elaine, 73, said “I never believed that having the photo put in the paper would lead to this.

“My niece has been looking into our family tree so it’s nice to be able to have made this connection.

“I’ve never experienced anything quite like this before.

“All from one photo. It’s just unbelievable.

“Later this month we are getting some of the family together for the very first time, which will just be something very special.”

THEY say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and the way to win a woman over is to cook for her, so it seems pretty obvious that food is the secret to love. This delicious recipe will not only win over anybody’s heart but it’s a naughty little dish that can be enjoyed by everyone guilt free.

Note: This recipe is sugar free, gluten free, dairy free, egg free and is a vegan dish.

Ingredients

What you need for the crust 2 cups activated mixed nuts 3 tablespoons organic coconut oil 1 1/4 cups dessicated coconut 2 tablespoons organic cacao powder 8 dates What you need for the filling Handful of berries 1 1/2 cups coconut milk 2 tablespoons organic cacao powder 1 tablespoon vanilla 2 tablespoons organic coconut oil 4 dates 1/2 teaspoon stevia

Method

To make the crust 1. Combine all ingredients for the crust in a powerful blender, or if you don’t have a powerful blender, just mix the ingredients

in small batches.

2. Pack the combined mixture into a lined cake dish and place in the freezer whilst making the filling.

To make the filling 1. Blend the dates, then remove from the blender and set aside.

2. Combine the coconut milk and stevia in the blender and blend for approximately 7 minutes (this helps slightly thicken the milk).

3. Add the dates and the remaining ingredients (apart from the berries) to the blender and give it a quick blend to mix the ingredients thoroughly.

4. Take the crust out of the freezer and place the berries on the crust, then add the filling on top.

5. Return the tart to the freezer for approximately 4 hours.

Club takes to the pitch in pink

By David Lee FOR the second consecutive year, the Mooroopna Cricket Club will be joining hundreds of other clubs, businesses, schools and community groups around the country in supporting the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Stumps Day, by hosting a Pink High Tea while the club’s A, C and E Grade teams take to the pitch in pink.

After raising $6,200 last year, this year’s event will run on Saturday, February 28, with the ladies of the club hosting a high tea event with raffles, silent auctions, mystery boxes and nail painting to keep attendees entertained while the club’s teams hit the cricket pitch.

Mooroopna Cricket Club President, Darren Young said, “We’ve been keen to get involved with the McGrath Foundation and to have our ladies involved in something they enjoy.

“The club is always happy to support charities and give back to the community.

“The ladies did a great job with the fundraising last year and it’s a great social day.”

The Pink Stumps Day event will be held from 1pm to 4pm at the Parson’s Cricket Pavilion, Mooroopna Cricket Club, Midland Highway in Mooroopna.

Elite BMX riders to hit Shepparton’s track

A noble ride to conquer cancer

By David Lee CYCLING for 200km is a feat in itself, but doing it in honour of a friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer is a noble deed and that is exactly why local resident, Holly Halls is taking on the Conquer Cancer Ride in October.

The ride, which will run across two days, October 24 and 25, will see Holly cycle from Melbourne through the Mornington Peninsula in a bid to raise funds and awareness for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Holly said, “I decided to do the ride because somebody really close to me has just been diagnosed with cancer and it turns out that the ride is actually on their birthday so it fits in well.

“I’ve been doing 20km rides to train, but I took on an 80km ride to Kyabram last week.

“My team’s name is ‘Dey See Me Rollin’ and we are aiming to raise $5,000. You have to raise at least $2,500 in sponsorships to be able to ride so I am calling on the community to dig deep for such a good cause.

“I’m embarking on this cycling journey to fight cancer. It will be a challenge in a number of ways, but with my bike, my helmet and the public’s generosity, a real impact will be

NATIONAL, elite BMX champions are gearing up to hit the Shepparton BMX Club track this weekend, as rounds three and four of the BMX Australia National Series pedals its way into town.

Being the third time in 12 months that Shepparton has hosted big events on the BMX calendar, large crowds are expected to gather at the track on February 7 and 8 to watch more than 400 riders of all age groups compete including champion rider, Bodi Turner and world number one Caroline Buchanan, along with round two men’s elite winner, Trent Jones from New Zealand. American star, Barry Nobles has also indicated he plans to enter the event, pending recovery from the arm injury he suffered whilst competing in Nerang. Joining the headliners will also be rising star, Rachel Jones and Victorian stalwart, Josh Callan.

Shepparton BMX Club President, Ash Robertson has highlighted the important role of hosting national events saying that it has helped in the improvement of the club and its facilities.

“We have just ordered the top dress, so everything is on track at the moment, and we’ll be more than ready.

“It really is a great boost for the club hosting such a big event like the National series.
