$1.5M to encourage local landscape enhancement

By David Lee LOCAL schools, community groups and other organisations are being encouraged to apply to gain part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s $1.5M Landscape Enhancement Grants, which has been released in a bid to protect and restore natural environmental areas.

Groups are able to apply for up to $50,000 to tackle year-long projects which are locallybased, focused on practical, on-ground measures and that address local needs.

New plan offered as investment program recommences

By David Lee LOCAL residents, growers and businesses alike let out a sigh of relief last week, when Coca- Cola A matil (CC A) announced it would be recommencing its planned $78M investment into Shepparton’s SPC plant, which was once again backed by

the Victorian Coalition Government, who confirmed it would continue to go ahead with its promise of $22M. With works having already commenced on the $100M Shepparton plant’s upgrade, the investment program was put on hold after Greater Shepparton City Council

voted to not close Andrew Fairley Avenue, which prompted a redesign of CCA’s original expansion plans that would have strengthened the site’s logistics, incorporated extensive construction works and seen an innovative expansion of the factory.

“My love for cars was bled into me” Youngest Dealer Principal in Australia shares his story

By David Lee YOU might know him as the face of Shepparton BMW, but at just 29 years old local resident and Dealer Principal, Aaron Brain has gained the title of the youngest dealer principal in the BMW network across 46 different dealers in all of Australia.

Appointed in the position at 28 years old, Aaron’s whole life has seen his passion for cars only grow and evolve, leading him to take out the prestigious, youthful title.

Aaron’s introduction to cars began as a child through his grandfather who had raced cars around Bathurst in his youth and still has a big following in the motor racing world.

Growing up in Melbourne and graduating to step into a role with a commercial tiling company where he was involved with commercial redevelopments such as the MCG redevelopment for the Commonwealth Games and multiplex sky rises, Aaron moved back to Shepparton to be with his family, and hasn’t looked back.

Aaron said, “I moved back to Shepparton eight years ago to work in my family’s business for 18 months before Ken Muston approached me to work for him and I thought it was a good opportunity as I had always had a good feeling about the motor industry and cars in general. I took the opportunity on and loved it so much I stayed there for three and a half years.

“I then had another opportunity to step into real estate, which is a big part of my family background. My dad has a business here in Shepparton that manages commercial properties. I did that for another 18 months before Jeff Tracy approached me and said he

was looking for a general manager and it was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse. I said yes and 12 months into that role, he knocked on my door and was looking to retire and offered me the opportunity to take over his position as dealer principal.

“There was a bit of an application and interview process involved with BMW Australia to make sure I was qualified and within six months they had said yes and I was sitting in the ‘big chair.’

“It was something I wasn’t expecting so quickly. But when some things are thrown at you, like this was with me, you have to grab hold of them.

“The first 12 months in the role has definitely had its challenges such as adapting to staff but I love every minute of it. It’s an exciting industry. 2014 in general has probably been the biggest year for BMW in a decade. We’ve got nine new models that have

come out this year.

“My love and passion for cars came from my grandfather and both he and my mum used to race around Winton and other tracks like that and that love for cars bled into me; I gained a passion for cars. I have always followed motor racing and have always had a passion for nice cars, which fits in really well with my role here at BMW. “It is excit i ng bei ng t he you ngest Dealer Principal in the BMW network across Australia. BMW are the leaders in innovation in the motor industry and it’s exciting to be part of that brand at the moment.

“We have a lot of good things that have come over the years and good things that are yet to come.”

Lowest waiting list figures in six years

By David Lee THE latest figures released outlining the state’s elective surgery waiting lists, has shown the best end-of-year results for GV Health since 2008/2009, with the number of patients waiting dropping by 275 compared to the same time last year.

While elective surgeries across the state have been slashed by 11,000, thanks to a record number of surgeries taking place in the 2012/2014 year, GV Health had recorded 789 patients were on the list at the end of June last year, but now has the list sitting on 514 patients.

GV Health provided surgery for 3,508 patients from its elective surgery waiting list in the 12 months to the end of June.

GV Health Executive Director Clinical Operations, Donna Sherringham said, “This is a fantastic result for the people of the Goulburn Valley.

“Our elective surgery waiting lists have been reduced by almost 35 percent and we have responded to growing demands, despite the increase in emergency department presentations.

“To achieve this result, GV Health has employed extra surgeons, enhanced the way we deliver services and we have been supported by several partnering health organisations where our staff have been operating.

“We have been working hard to improve outcomes for patients. It is great to see the latest figures match the dedicated efforts of staff to enhance service performance.

“We will continue to look at ways we can enhance performance and service delivery for patients across all areas, whilst addressing increasing attendances, population growth and an ageing community.”

KICKING off in June this year with fundraising events including an annual battery drive and trivia night, this year’s Give Me 5 for Kids events have seen $130,255.02 raised during the initiative.

Running since the late 90s, this year’s initiative will provide funds to GV Health’s Children’s Ward in hope of providing an eneurisis alarm, Graseby apnoea monitors, combination weighing scales/stadiometer/ BMI calculator, wall mounted opthalmoscope, holter monitors, Dynamap blood pressure monitors, desk/ wall mounted digital BP monitors, woods light, pan

opthalmoscope, vein viewer and an ECG machine.

Funds are also hoped to be used to make medical imaging upgrades as well as upgrades to the procedural room and waiting room at GV Health’s Children’s Ward.

95 3SR FM General Manager, Leanne Hulm said, “95 3SR FM would like to acknowledge not only the work that 95 3SR FM do in raising this much needed money, but also the community. By David Lee THIS year’s Goulburn Valley Hospice Rallye has been one of the most successful yet according to committee members, after the fun fundraising event saw $62,590 raised for Goulburn valley Hospice Care Service.

Running in its 19th year on the weekend of May 3 and 4, this year’s rallye saw 100 participants tour the picturesque regions around Nagambie, Yarck and the Yarra Valley, culminating in a Sunday lunch at Flowerdale Estate in Strath Creek.

Goulburn Valley Hospice Rallye Committee President, Min Innes-Irons said, “In the true spirit of the rallye, a good time was had by all. The funds raised this year are by far the largest we have ever reached and we would like to acknowledge the generous anonymous donor who gave $25,000 toward the total amount in the days following the event.

“We sincerely thank all for their generous support and we are proud to be able to assist financially to enable

Shepp Show future in doubt I N it s 138t h ye a r, t he S h e pp a r ton Agricultural Show is facing uncertain times and without the support of volunteers going into the future, Society President, Lloyd Ohlin says their chances of continuing beyond the next two years are slim.

M r Ohlin said, “Smaller show committees in the region are folding and without the support of a solid base of volunteers, the Shepparton Agricultural Show may just follow suit.

“The costs are so high, if we had to pay for the service of workers in place of volunteers we wouldn’t be viable.

Volunteers are vital to the success and continuation of the show tradition.

Show S ecret a r y, Ju l ie W i nch sa id , “There’s a lot of work to be done at show time. We need people who can help with setting up pens, getting the show ready, running sections, stewarding animals, running errands, administration, occupational health and safety… every aspect of the show’s organisation requires t he help of volu nteers. I mpor t a nt ly, we’re looking for new blood, because our committee members are ageing. We need fresh faces who can learn from the experiences of our older members so that we can continue successfully into the future.

M r Ohlin added, “T he Sheppar ton Agricultural Show is a family tradition and we want the event to continue into the future. We’ve invested a lot in ensuring there’s something for everyone including free entertainment to make the show more attractive for families. But we need

Mooroopna Secondary College will be looking to apply for the grant to help establish and sustain environmental areas in and around the school that can be utilised by students as well as the wider community.

Mooroopna Secondary College Principal, Gary Fletcher said, “What we are planning to do is replant garden beds near our courtyard and install a new and efficient irrigation system as well as renew the native vegetation around the basketball area, which will also be utilised to build a community environmental area.

“A part of the school’s master plan is to create sustainable habitats in terms of native vegetation to help link the students with the environment.”

Mooroopna Secondary College Cooperative Company Limited Secretary Treasurer, Jim Douglass said, “The school’s plan is about providing a safe facility for the school and community to utilize, and one that will help to improve the environment as well as upgrade the existing facility to make it more environmentally friendly.”

This year, guests will be treated with a showcase of award winning talents, designed and prepared with the assistance of GOTAFE’s Hospitality, Cookery, Events and Tourism students.

As always the six course degustation menu will be matched with the award winning wines from the 2014 Dookie Wine Show, which highlights the best the region has to offer as judged by wine judge, Simon Kileen.

GOTAFE Events and Tourism Trainer, Claire Taylor said, “Our theme for the awards dinner this year works in well with the ‘rustic Dookie Wine Show’ character.

“We have 40 students working at the front of house and back of house this year.

“At the end of the day the awards dinner is about creating an outcome for st udents, letting their creative juices flow and giving them a world class experience; that’s what this event does.”

Still battling on for hall upgrade CELEBRATING 47 YEARS… Tatura Senior Citizens Club celebrated their 47th birthday recently, also raising $15,481 for their new hall upgrade.

By David Lee HELPING to celebrate 47 years, the Tatura Senior Citizens Club recently held their birthday celebrations, where 40 members travelled to Albury for the day and further funding was raised to go toward the club’s much needed hall upgrade.

Vice President of the Tatura Senior Citizens Club, Jim Griffin said, “Geoff, Roz and Liz, relatives of the late ETT Tennant, carried on ETT’s tradition of bringing along eggs, which sold for $20 and on a special note they also donated $1,000 toward the club’s hall fundraising efforts and for that we give them a very big thank you.

“So far we have raised $15,481 which is a little way off our target of $75,000 but through the help of members and the community, we are getting there.

“SPC Ardmona Factory Sales have been very generous and donated a $100 voucher which we made into two $50 hampers, which we will be raffling off at the barbeques we have coming up at Harvey Norman on October 4 and 5. This will help raise more funds for the hall upgrade and we encourage people to come down and grab a sausage for a good cause.

“We are also holding a casserole luncheon on September 12 at the Tatura Senior Citizens hall, Flanagan Place in Tatura. Cost is $15 a head but it will also help see more raised for the hall upgrade.

“Anyone who would like to make a donation to the appeal can do so through the Tatura branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia – BSB 063547, account number 10030683,” Jim said.

THE team at SPC Ardmona KidsTown are calling on interested people to put their names forward as volunteers at the region’s largest family event, KidsFest 2014. KidsTown Duty Supervisor / KidsFest Programs & Marketing, Tracey Toy said, “We welcome volunteers of all ages from 14 upwards and it’s a great way to get some experience in different areas of event work and be a part of one of the region’s biggest family event.

“We take children’s safety very seriously here at KidsTown so any of our volunteers over the age of 18 will require a ‘Working with Children’s Check”, which doesn’t cost anything and will cover volunteers for three years. $100M investment cements SPC’s future New plan offered as investment program recommences continued from front page A new amended plan includes investment in a greater level of automation throughout the SPC facility to compensate for the logistical inefficiencies, which remain on the divided site.

The amended plan also means SPC will have to exit some categories that cannot be accommodated on the Shepparton site because of a reduction in space.

SPC Managing Director, Peter Kelly said, “It is welcome news that the CCA Board has decided to continue to support SPC and the region despite the council setback. It has been a very challenging process to compensate for the lost opportunity to make our plant more efficient.

“We have had to redesign our plan and there are alterations we have had to address. One alteration was to work around how we are going to deal with the traffic and logistics on the site.

“We originally wanted to consolidate our sites from around the region and to fit that in we were going to construct a large building, with a logistics area in front of that.

Unfortunately we have had to delete those building plans to get the logistics onto our site because a quarter of our budget was going to be put toward that.

“What we have done though is, we’ve gone back and reallocated that money toward automation throughout the factory, which will help to streamline our processes.

“Another alteration involves a couple of categories (lines) we just cannot get on the site without expansion. This means we will see the physical shutdown of the GV Snack Bite line, with another decision still to be made on the future of one other line.

“Ultimately though, we’ve shown that we are innovative and can move forward. We have a pathway forward now and will be going back to growers to make some solid longer term plans with them. We can’t wait to get out and talk to the growers.

“We believe we have the resources and the plan to strengthen the business. Already our new products like Sneaky Veg, Fruit in Coconut Water, Perfect Fruit and My Daily Fruit are doing well in the market and winning awards for their health benefits. We also have a number of innovative new snacks that will soon join them on supermarket shelves.

“I am confident we can now offer employees and growers certainty for our future.

“Another positive change is that we are now aiming to do longer term projections as a whole, which is different than the previous year-to-year projections we were running on,” Mr Kelly said.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Jenny Houlihan said the announcement by CCA to invest $78M into SPC is good news for the Goulburn Valley.

“We welcome and are excited by the announcement that CCA will continue their investment in Greater Shepparton.

“The investment into redevelopment is a clear sign that CCA and SPC are making a long term commitment to their operations in the Goulburn Valley. I would like to thank the CCA Chairman, David Gonski and all the board members along with CEO, Alison Watkins.

“The accolade should go to them (SPC and CCA) now because they could have packed up and gone away, but they’ve stuck with us and I think they have made a really great statement on our behalf that they do believe that this can work and we have to go along with them.

“The fact that they have committed to Shepparton is also a commitment to the Australian product and the Australian food industry.

“SPC has had to go back to the drawing board and do a whole new plan. They can no longer afford to expand their factory and that means that huge development will not be able to take place, and that’s (will cost) local jobs.

On the other hand they are still here.

“While SPC have been unable to implement their preferred development plan due to not being able to use the Andrew Fairley Avenue space as part of their site, it is great news that they have come up with an alternative that will see SPC operations continue in the Goulburn Valley for the long term. SPC local growers can now feel more confident about their future in the fruit and vegetable industry.”

Cr Houlihan also commended the Victorian Government for agreeing to continue their $22M financial commitment to help secure the future of SPC. “The redevelopment of the SPC operations is one step towards the company being more sustainable, however the continued support from our community is vital to their success.

“One thing that we can do right now is to commit to purchasing our local products products which are grown in Australia and produced in Australia. This is something that is passionate to many Australians.

“Let’s support SPC here in Shepparton – it’s been our icon for 100 years and we want to keep it that way.”

Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said, “All of this came about because of the Greater Shepparton City Council’s shock decision not to close Andrew Fairley Avenue, which threw the cards up in the air for SPC again. We were all holding our breaths to see if CCA would persist with the plans and they

GV to change frequency THE Goulburn Valley and surrounding areas will be undergoing a retune on September 4, 2014. The retune is the final step in the move to digital-only television. It’s happening because some channels are being moved to make room for new services.

As a result your television, set-top box or digital television recorder will need to be retuned with some channels changing frequency.

There is likely to be some disruptions to services on and around September 4, due to work being conducted at the transmission site. This is unlikely to last longer than a few hours. You don’t need to do anything during these temporary outages as your free-to-air digital channels will return after technical works are completed.

Government’s decision on funding bypass, disappointing GREATER Shepparton City Council has expressed their disappointment for the lack of commitment from the State Government in funding the GV Highway Bypass.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Jenny Houlihan said, “Council has received a letter from Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss advising us that the determination of priorities for funding are decided by the Victorian Government and as the State Government hadn’t put forward the GV Bypass for funding it would not be considered.

“Therefore we must conclude that State Government has not identified the bypass as a priority in seeking funding under the Infrastructure Investment Program from the Federal Government and so the project has stalled once again.

“This is disappointing as we have previously been assured that the State Government had listed the GV Bypass as one of its priority projects for consideration by the Federal

Government.

“Our local road and transport system is already under pressure and with Shepparton, Mooroopna and Kialla identified to experience major growth over the next 20 to 30 years in accommodating up to 17,600 new residents, investment in our local road and transport network is critical.

“Unfortunately at this stage the State Government has not supported the need for the bypass for priority funding and we call on them to ensure that this important project receives the support it needs to bring it to fruition,” Cr Houlihan said.

Goulburn Valley GV Highway Bypass Action Group Chairman, Peter Johnson says he supports the mayor’s comments.

“T he State G over n ment’s lack of commitment is particularly disappointing as in 2012 they had included the bypass in their list of projects for proposed referral to Infrastructure Australia.”

Run for fun around Tatura to help students

By David Lee THE community will have the chance to join in a fit, healthy and fun event next month, when the Tatura Primary School hosts its second ‘fun run’ event to help raise funds to improve the education and overall school experience of its students.

The fun run, which will offer a 10km run, 5km run, 3km ‘kids’ run or 3km walk around Tatura, and will kick off with registrations opening from 7:30am on Sunday, September 14 followed by the race start from 8:30am.

Tatura Primary School Grade 3/4 Teacher, Nicole Evans said, “Last year we raised more than $2,000 which went toward furniture and equipment for our students. We had around 50 runners and it went really well, but we are hoping to have more members of the community involved this year.

“The run will be around Tatura and

Gators’ take out ‘Big’ title

By David Lee IT’S been 11 years since their last Big V win, but Shepparton Gators managed to score a slam dunk at the Big V Basketball Championships on Saturday night, beating Casey Cavaliers by one point.

Scoring 70 against the Cavaliers’ 69, the Gators’ had to fight their way through the game held at the Casey Indoor Sports Centre, with the Cavaliers’ leading the game by five points midway through the opening term.

But at quarter time, the Gators’ turned the tables, taking a one point lead, beginning the game of ‘cat and mouse.’ The Gators’ scored an eight point lead, which was soon levelled out by the Cavaliers’ at three-quarter time. The two were fighting tooth and nail, the Gators’ slamming the first three baskets of the final term, followed by the Cavaliers’ bringing it back to a point with just 1.38 on the clock.

Again the Gators’ seemed to gain the upper hand, scoring another four points with just eight seconds to go, before the Cavaliers’ sunk a three-pointer in the final second, leaving the Gators’ as victors by one point.

Sporting groups in for a ‘chance’ RESIDENTS are being offered the chance to become more involved in sport through the ‘Sporting Chance’ scholarships program, which is being run by Greater Shepparton City Council in conjunction with FamilyCare.

The program assists residents to actively participate in sport and recreation, regardless of their means, through access to small grants to the value of $250 per applicant and will be

accessible under two categories.

The categories available include ‘children and young people between the ages of five and 18 or who are still full time at secondary school’ and ‘adults over 18 who are no longer at secondary school (for adults, an element of volunteering is required to be eligible for the scholarship).

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor,

Cr Jenny Houlihan said, “This is an excellent opportunity for people finding it a little difficult to afford to play sport. Playing sport is great for people within the community and this is another way where we can assist residents.”

The funding can be provided for club membership, participation fees, equipment and uniforms.

Kirby takes to field for 200th game with Tatura

By David Lee AFTER starting out his career with Tatura Football Club in 2002, star Tatura Football Club Player, Paul Kirby took to the field for his 200th senior game at the weekend.

Already a Goulburn Valley Football League Qualified Life Member, Saturday’s match against Echuca was in fact Kirby’s 359th senior game, with club records showing he had played 110 senior games for Tongala and 40 games in the Ovens and Murray Football League with Wangaratta Magpies.

Kirby was also played alongside his teammates when Tatura took out the premierships in 2003 and 2012.

Goulburn Valley Football League General Manager, Keith Wellman said, “Of extreme importance to the Goulburn Valley Football

League was Paul’s contribution to the League’s WorkSafe Country Championship team and his outstanding displays as a ruckman, which in turn encouraged and inspired his team mates to gain the ultimate recognition as number one rating in the WorkSafe Victorian Country Football League.”

Tatura Football Netball Club Senior Coach, Brendan Van De Donk, who coached Kirby in the Under 18s, said, “Kirby has been a great player over the years. He’s an ‘A grader’ and is a good quality person to have around the club.

“We look forward to him playing on next year, because he is a quality player.

“It was good to win for his 200th game.

You don’t like to lose milestone games and it was good to get the win for him.”
