By David Lee A BRAND new permanent exhibit will open to the public at the Shepparton Motor Museum this weekend, showcasing the history of the iconic Furphy name, business and story and coincidentally will help to celebrate the Furphy family’s 150th year in business.

Following the historical journey started

by John Furphy in 1873 right up to the current, modern day operations of Furphy Foundry and J Furphy and Sons, the exhibit will see its ‘grand opening’ in October.

$3M donation a win for community Copulos family supports arts and health

By David Lee A NEW location for Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) is now a surety and a major boost for health services will be offered after

the announcement was made last week the Copulos family, through the Peter and Maria Copulos Foundation, would pledge $3M toward the projects over the coming 10 years.

The Copulos family announced $1.5M would be donated to improve health services across the region, through a consideration process where requests can be made for donations by local charities who have Item 1 DGR (deductible gift recipient) status under Continued on page 14 tax legislation.

New beer launched in honour of local icon

By David Lee TONIGHT will see the launch of a new beer in Shepparton in the name of local iconic family, the Furphys, which is not only indicative of the history of the homegrown business but is also true to the term given to the word, ‘furphy’ following the war.

The Furphy Refreshing Ale, which was officially launched in Geelong on July 15, has been created by Little Creatures Brewery/ Lion in conjunction with the Furphy family and will be launched in Shepparton at Noble Monks tonight, beginning as being offered on-tap, followed by individual sale in bottle shops across the region in the coming months.

Furphy Foundry Director, Sam Furphy said, “We’re really proud that we were approached to have our name, Furphy, lend itself to a nicely branded beer.

“We were particularly interested in the good connection between the beer and the Furphy history, where the beer is centred around telling stories.

“There is a really strong connection and alignment with the history of the diggers standing around having a drink of water

around the Furphy watercart and sharing and telling tall stories, which since then has seen the expression Furphy become part of the Australian vernacular.

“What we have also been very appreciative of is the fact that Little Creatures Brewery/ Lion have really listened and taken a lot of time to understand what is very important from the Furphy family history point of view. They have been very sympathetic and understanding with this and it’s these reasons we made the decision to form the partnership with Little Creatures Brewery/ Lion.

“We are really looking forward to many successful years with this great new beer.”

“We were also very pleased with the way they went about in making sure there was an alignment and synergy with their proposal of the brand and the history of the company.

will help bring further understanding of the Furphy story. Since the launch in July we were very keen to have Shepparton taste the Furphy beer early on, so having this launch tonight is a great result.

“Not only is there a linkage with the name but the beer is brewed and processed using tanks and fermenters which we manufactured,” Adam said.

Running until August 31, the exhibit showcases a range of birth related, newborn and maternity images that Tanya has taken, who says this is the first of many exhibitions

to come.

“I saw on the Billabong Garden Café Facebook page that they were offering ex h ibit ion spac e a nd saw it as a n opportunity to get my work printed and a chance to get some fantastic exposure.

“I wanted to see my progression as a photographer and this is a great way to physically see that.

“I’m happy with the exhibit and it has been received well by everyone who has seen it so far.

“After I gain some more experience, I will be looking at holding further exhibitions in the future,” Tanya said.

THE recent acquisition of Integrating Technologies (Inttec) by the Viatek group will benefit regional Victorian businesses by creating a ‘one-stop-shop’ for all of their technology requirements.

KidsFest set to be bigger than ever THE region’s favourite, fun-filled, family entertainment event, KidsFest 2014, is fast approaching, and this year will see one of the biggest and best events yet.

Spread over two big days, Saturday, September 20 and Sunday 21, a number of big acts will descend on SPC Ardmona Kidstown, with something to suit kids of all ages.

The headline acts include Dirt Girl, Dr. Seuss - Cat in the Hat live show, How to Train your Dragon 2, Mr Peabody and Sherman and back by popular demand, Humphrey B. Bear.

KidsTown Playground Coordinator, Steve Wilson said KidsFest is now in its ninth year and has established itself as a fun packed event for the whole family.

“This year’s festival features a number of high profile children’s entertainers as well as sporting activities, African drumming and dancing workshops, Kids Karaoke tent, children’s crafts and loads of roving entertainment,” Mr Wilson said.

“There will also be a sideshow alley area with lots of rides, woodturning demonstrations, arts and crafts displays, and an area dedicated to sporting activities.

“KidsFest is great value family entertainment and there is something for everyone, so put the dates in your diary now.”

Entry will be $2 per person and covers most activities. The event runs between 10am and 4pm each day. Council will also be running a courtesy bus to and from the event with times and pick up locations on the KidsFest website.

KidsFest is also taking applications for volunteers to help with a number of roles during the festival.

$3M donation a win for community Copulos family supports arts and health continued from front page BUT the biggest revelation came when Copulos Group Managing Director and SAM Foundation Board Member, Stephen Copulos announced $1.5M would be provided to SAM to aid in the search and construction of the museum’s new location, hinting that it would be better located at the southern end of Victoria Park Lake.

Alongside the $3M announcement, the Copulos family also helped launch the Tree of Giving in the foyer at SAM, where donations can be made to the SAM Foundation through the purchase of a gold, silver or bronze leaf valuing $100, $200 and $300 respectively or via the purchase of a $20 SAM lapel pin, kicking off the ‘giving’ by donating $20,000.

Stephen Copulos said, “It would be fantastic if we could establish a self-sustaining museum development within 10 years. It could be the first museum in the world that can pay its own way, right here in the heart of Victoria. Something we can be proud of.

“Our goal is to fill the tree within 12 months. When the Tree of Giving is filled with leaves, it has the potential to raise $500,000 dollars. It will make a stunning addition to the gallery as well as a great talking point for the community where we can all proudly show off our part in the involvement of a new SAM.” Copulos Group Founder and Chairman, Peter Copulos said, “In making this commitment today, our family is humbled and showing our appreciation for the community we live in.

“My family has lived in Shepparton for nearly 70 years and our family business now employs 5,000 people around Australia and overseas. This community gave us our start and we are conscious of the benefits of giving back to the community.

A Tasman leap to a better lifestyle LIFESTYLE Shepparton residents, Ray and Vicky Walliss were so sure of their decision to become a part of the local over 50s community’s lifestyle that they moved from Tasmania, site unseen.

Ray said, “We had a big house in Tasmania, it was a lot of work and we were struggling to manage the upkeep, the gardening and the housework. We had friends from Mooroopna and while they were visiting with us, we mentioned that we were thinking of downsizing. They told us of this place in Shepparton, we went on the website and had a look and that was that.”

After relocating to Lifestyle Shepparton, Ray and Vicky and their beloved dog, Goldie, are thrilled with their choice and Ray, who was born in Corowa, says he has now come full circle.

Vicky said, “It has far and away exceeded our expectations, we’re never lost for anything to do.”

Ray said, “The biggest problem for Vicky where we lived in Tasmania was the lack of social contact, it was quite lonely.

Vicky explained, “All my family are in New Zealand, which makes it difficult. But the sense of community here is fantastic.”

Ray said, “We could have downsized to anything, but living here with all of the amazing facilities is ideal.”

Ray and Vicky’s advice to anyone looking to downsize is, “Don’t hesitate”.

Ray said, “I’ve always been a loner and that was one thing I was concerned about.

My motivation was all about Vicky, I wanted her to feel safe and secure, but I wasn’t sure how I would go with the change. It has

really surprised me how much I enjoy the interaction with all of the different people.”

Shepparton Motor Museum General Manager, Tony Badrock said, “What we wanted to do is to get the exhibition open to give people a sneak peek and watch it evolve before our official grand opening later this year.

“Furphy are commemorating 150 years this year, so this museum will be great for the community to see the history of an Australian icon, which is still in business in Shepparton today.

“We personally love the history, the icon, the brand that Furphy presents and to work on this project has been great.

“This is a great addition to the Shepparton Motor Museum,” Tony said.

“This exhibit allows us to merge our collections and share our family’s story.

There were some really interesting stories that came out of looking into what was needed for the museum.

Pools and spas must have fences

THE Victorian Building Authority (VBA) warns Victorians that all swimming pools and spas must have a compliant fence.

V B A D i r e c t o r of Te c h n i c a l a n d Regulation, Jarrod Edwards said there is confusion on what a safe and properly compliant pool fence looks like.

“While there are stringent building regulations in place to ensure swimming pool and spa areas are safe, people often do not know what is required.

“This is why the VBA has released a new brochure for consumers called: ‘About swimming pools, spas and their safety barriers’, so home owners with pools and spas can receive easy-to-understand information,” he said.

Mr Edwards said the brochure will help Victorians make sure their pool fence complies, that they understand the regulations and where to get inspection services. The brochure will be available online at the VBA website and also from local councils.

The VBA reminds Victorians with pools and spas that they must take the following precautions: • If a pool or spa can hold a depth of 30cms, the length of a school ruler, they must have fencing around them. This applies even to inflatable pools.

• All pools and spas built since 2010 require a four-sided fence, with no direct access from the house to the pool or spa surround.

• A building permit is required to build the pool/spa and the fencing. You must begin work within 12 months of the building permit being issued, with work to be completed within six months of starting it.

• You should hire a registered building practitioner to do the work. The VBA has a list of registered practitioners on its website at www.vba.vic.gov.au • Gates around pools and spas must be selfclosing and self-latching, regardless of when a pool was built.

• Homeowners should never prop open a pool gate. It is illegal to do this.

• Pot plants, eskies and chairs, which may be used by children to climb into the pool or spa area, must also be moved away from the fencing.

Mr Edwards said while taking these precautions goes a long way to protecting children around backyard swimming pools and spas, the best safety message is for parents and carers to actively supervise their kids in the water.

THE vast majority of first time investors say they would cut back on general day to day spending in order to afford an investment property, new research has revealed.

According to Mortgage Choice’s latest First Time Investor survey, 74.3 percent of respondents said one of the first things they would do is cut back on their spending in order to afford an investment property, while a further 56.3 percent indicated they would “eat out less” and 25.7 percent said they would cut back on “alcohol related spending”.

Mortgage Choice spokesperson, Jessica Darnbrough said it was possible for first time buyers to save a significant amount of money and achieve their property ownership goals faster by simply cutting back on their day-today expenses.

“There are lots of things potential buyers can do to reduce their daily spending. In fact establishing good saving habits can be as simple as taking a back to the basics approach,” she said.

“In the first instance, it pays to build an achievable budget. Budgeting monthly or in accordance with the length of your pay period will allow you to amend your budget fairly quickly if an unexpected expense rears its ugly head.”

Once investors have a manageable budget in place, there are a few other techniques they can implement to help them achieve their savings goal sooner rather than later:

Become a VIP member Sign up to be a VIP member at your regular shopping spots. Whether this means you will get a few dollars off per ticket on a trip to the cinema, receive sale prices at your favourite clothing stores, or earn a supermarket discount voucher, every little bit counts.

Savings enforcer Ask someone to help you oversee your savings plan. That way you can stay accountable if you don’t reach your savings goal and you’ll be more inclined to stick to your budget.

Home cooked meals Rather than buying your lunch each weekday, why not prepare your own meals by making a weekly trip to the supermarket.

Waste not, want not Eliminate some of the little luxuries that you can do without. Try cutting back on takeaway coffees, fashionable items that have a short life-span, pay-television, internet or data usage etc.

Fun fitness run

By David Lee AFTER running for 10 years worldwide, the increasingly popular ‘Park Run’ event was brought to Shepparton in January this year, after locals and now event volunteers, Allan and Kerrie Connolly wanted to make the fun fitness run available to the local community.

The run, which includes a 5km walk/run around Victoria Park Lake and meets at the barbeque shelter behind Shell Service Station from 8am on Saturday mornings, has been completely volunteer run with roughly seven people putting their hand up each week to help Allan and Kerrie organise and oversee the week’s run.

Event Coordinator, Allan Connolly said, “Kerrie and I went to a Park Run event in Craigeburn last year and really loved the concept, so we decided to bring it to Shepparton.

“It’s fun, helps to promote health and fitness and provides you with something great to do to kick off your weekend.

“We are always looking for volunteers and encourage the community to come down and get involved.”

20 of Shepparton’s finest swimmers take on championships

By David Lee MORE than 4,000 people are set to converge on Shepparton’s Aquamoves this weekend as 402 swimmers from across the state, including 20 from Shepparton Swimming Club, take on the 2014 Victorian Country Short Course Swimming Championships.

Running on Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17 the event, which is hosted by the Goulburn Valley and District Swimming Association, Aquamoves and the Greater Shepparton City Council, will see swimmers from 36 clubs compete in 81 individual events.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Jenny Houlihan said the championships provide a significant benefit to the tourism industry in a traditionally quiet August winter period across accommodation hospitality and retail sectors.

If no correct entry is received the prize will jackpot each week until a correct entry is submitted.

Draws between two teams will only be recognised if a tick is placed beside both teams.

Entries will only be accepted by post or hand delivery no later than 5.00pm prior to the first match of that round during 2014.

White steps down as coach

By David Lee AFTER three years at the helm, Rochester Football Club Coach, Peter White is taking a step back from the role, with the club now on the hunt for a new coach.

Joining the Tigers for the 2012 season and helping to lead the team into the finals for the past two consecutive years, followed by a ripper season this year that won’t see the team taste the premiership, but will see them come home strong, White says his decision to step back from the role was due to family commitments and will end a 31 year coaching career.

“I thought I’d been in the game for a long time I felt it was the right time to step back.

“My highlights over the years would have to be winning the premierships at Kyabram in 1996 and at Merrigum 1986 and 1987 as well as being a part of the Goulburn Valley Interleague side winning the Victorian Country

Championships in 2010 and 2011.

“Rochester’s a fantastic club. I will miss the people and players in the club, but I intend on going back next year to watch a few games.

“It’s great to be finishing up on a good note,” White said.

Rochester Football Club Manager, David Hodgens said, “We’ve had nothing but admiration for Peter and what he’s done for the footy club.

“He came here with a reputation as a good coach and he’s left no doubt about that in anyone’s mind.

“He’s a very popular guy, which isn’t always easy for a good senior coach. You’re not in the role to win friends, but he’s done a very good job and been a very popular guy in the club.

“Everyone wants to give him the send-off he deserves, so we’ll be coming home with a wet sail, that’s for sure.”
