Recognition for local WWI hero Commemorations to mark 100 years
By David Lee WHILE commemorations will ring out next month to honour the centenary of WWI, those who enlisted and fought to keep their countries safe will be remembered, but former local resident and deceased war
veteran, Jack Mackie has lacked the proper recognition since returning from the war in 1919. Enlisting in the war just shy of his 20th birthday on May 13, 1916, Jack left Australia aboard the ‘Honorata’ on
November 23 with the 18th Reinforcement Batch for the 23rd Battalion of the 6th Infantry Brigade, but it was his courageous act on September 1, 1918 that saw Jack awarded a Military Medal at the capture of Mt St Quentin. During the attack, the enemy made two attempts to bring two machine guns into position against Jack’s company. Continued on page 10
