From the front page: Staying in the groove with social dancing
IF doctor’s could prescribe a pill that was effective in managing weight, reducing dementia, improving balance, memory and strength, people would be lining up for it! The good news is, such a remedy exists, and as locals from the Shepparton Social Sequence Dance Group know, it is a whole lot of fun.
DANCING FOR A CAUSE... Pictured are Melena and Jim Matino from Shepparton Social Sequence Dance Group. Photo: Deanne Jeffers
Dancing offers a range of impressive physical and mental benefits says instructor Gail Cook, who has led classes at the Senior Citizens Centre for several years. There are also social benefits, keeping participants busy on the dance floor and in their
social lives. The group meets for practice every Wednesday, 1-4pm, at the Senior Citizens Centre. They also host concerts the second Sunday of each month. October’s concert is a fundraiser for the ‘I Care for Cancer Care @ GV Health’.

A life on the land, A new chapter at Shepparton FOR nearly 70 years, home for Bobby was measured in hundreds of thousands of acres. Now, at 88 he's swapped that scale for a quieter, closerknit life at Shepparton Gardens.
FROM THE COUNTRY TO COMMUNITY... Bobby spent 45 years working on a 360,000-acre Merino sheep stud before downsizing to Shepparton Gardens, where he has found a new rhythm. Photo: Deanne Jeffers
Bobby spent 45 years on a Merino sheep stud in the Riverina – 360,000 acres, 150,000 sheep. He started out maintaining vehicles and machinery, becoming maintenance manager. Later he moved to a small farm outside Shepparton, before selling up this year and downsizing into Shepparton Gardens. He'd known of the community and met manager Jodie before deciding to make the move. Having not lived in a town since he was 15, the shift to close neighbours and daily meals took some adjusting to at
first - but Bobby has since fully embraced community living. The community has a Men's Shed, a popular meeting spot for residents. Bobby enjoys playing pool every Thursday, and still drives himself into town - only five minutes from the community - where he enjoys walks by the lake and staying active. His advice for those considering downsizing? "Go for it and give it a go - if you don't, you'll never know." And if he could give advice to his younger self: "Enjoy the country while you're there."

A Community of Care & Culture
Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative plays a vital part of the commununity, built on the strength, resilience and traditions of First Nations people. For generations, Rumbalara has been a place of belonging and connection, offering culturally safe support that uplifts and empowers our people. From health, wellbeing and family services, to housing, justice programs, aged and disability care, we ensure that community members receive the support they need in a way that respects their culture and identity.
At the heart of our aged care services is the Rumbalara Elders Facility, a place where our Elders receive high-quality care while remaining connected to culture, community and Country. The facility is more than just a home, it is a place where Elders can share their knowledge, be surrounded by familiar faces, and receive care that honours their individual stories and traditions.
Honouring Our Elders with Quality Care Our dedicated team works every day to provide compassionate, culturally safe care. This includes personal and clinical support, as well as activities that promote wellbeing and connection. A key focus this year has been cultural care planning, ensuring that each Elder’s journey is respected and recorded in a way that reflects their identity and heritage. Our kitchen staff play a crucial role in this care, preparing healthy meals with love and dedication every single day of the year. Even during major upgrades to our kitchen facilities, they ensured that Elders never went without, demonstrating the resilience and commitment that define Rumbalara.
Aged Care Assessment Organisations A small number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations are delivering culturally safe, trauma aware aged care assessments. We can proudly say that we are one of those sites delivering this pilot project, enabling us to better support Elders and older Aboriginal & Torres-Strait Islander people to access aged care services to meet their needs.
Advocating for Change and Better Support At Rumbalara, we understand that quality aged care extends beyond service delivery. We take our advocacy role seriously, working to ensure Aboriginal voices are heard in conversations that shape aged care policy, funding and service design. By championing culturally safe, personcentred approaches and sharing the experiences of our Elders and community, we continue to advocate for systems that better support Aboriginal people to age with dignity, connection and choice.
OUR LOCATIONS
A Legacy of Strength and Longevity The impact of Rumbalara’s care is evident in the lives of our Elders. While the government estimates First Nations life expectancy at 71 years, we proudly support community members who are thriving well beyond this, a testament to the strength of culturally safe and community-driven care. Support at Home Program This program offers opportunities to help community members stay at home as they age. It aims to improve access, secure more appropriate funding, and create a more responsive aged care system. Rumbalara will continue to advocate for a system that promotes self-determination, supports choice, and understands the unique needs of First Nations elders.
Investing in the Future of Aged Care With secured funding of programs like the Elder Care Support Program and a First Nations specific aged care assessment initiative, this enables us to better meet the needs of our community.

ONE of the highlights will be a special ‘Kidnapped Teacher Talk’ with Kyabram author Rob Hunter, who will share the story behind his novel Day 9 at Wooreen. The book recounts the ninth day of Rob’s teaching career at Wooreen, when he and nine students were kidnapped at gunpoint in 1972 by Edwin John Eastwood in what became known as the Faraday School Kidnapping. MEAC’s ‘Be Connected’ focus includes a presentation on scams and artificial intelligence on October 21, offering practical advice for staying safer in an increasingly digital world. The program also includes a presentation on Seniors Rights on October 7, covering topics including elder abuse, support services, money, ageing and family.
On October 14, ‘The Farewell Lounge’ will provide a safe and compassionate space to talk about and plan end-of-life wishes, while a free gut health and ageing workshop on October 12 will explore nutrition and include healthy snacks. If you’d like assistance with your Working with Children Card application, you can book in to get help from the friendly MEAC staff on October 22. With opportunities to learn, connect, ask questions and share experiences, MEAC’s Seniors Month program is a chance to discover something new while staying connected to the community. For more information about the October program, contact MEAC on (03) 5825 1774 or drop into 23 Alexandra Street, Mooroopna

Find the Paw-fect Match at the Greater Shepparton Animal Shelter A LOYAL COMPANION... From morning walks to quiet moments at home, pets can bring companionship, routine and plenty of joy to everyday life. Pictured is Boss. For many seniors, welcoming a pet into their life can bring comfort, companionship and a renewed sense of joy. A dog or cat offers more than a friendly face at the end of the day. They become a loyal companion, sharing life's quiet moments and providing unconditional love every step of the way. A Companion Made for You Every pet has their own unique personality. Some people are drawn to the gentle nature of an older animal, while others enjoy the playful energy of a younger companion. Whatever your preference, finding the right match can create a friendship that enriches both your life and theirs. Sharing Life's Everyday Moments The simple routines that come with pet ownership can quickly become the highlights of the day. Whether it's a
morning walk, a gentle game in the garden or relaxing together with a cup of tea and a good book, pets have a way of making ordinary moments feel special. A Bond Built on Love Animals have an incredible ability to connect with people. With every tail wag, nuzzle and contented purr, they remind us of the value of companionship and affection. The bond between a pet and their owner often grows quickly, creating a sense of connection that can last for many years.
Emotional wellbeing Pets offer emotional support, reduce feelings of loneliness, and help create a sense of belonging. Their presence can lift your mood and make each day feel more meaningful. Give love, get love Every animal deserves love. By adopting, you’re giving them a second chance, and gaining a devoted companion. Ready to meet your match? The biggest retirement question isn’t about money
PLANNING FOR LIFE AFTER WORK... A good retirement plan considers not just your finances, but the lifestyle you want to enjoy in the years ahead. Pictured from the MB+M team are client support manager Cassey O’Brien and financial advisors Darcy Morris, Bree Hanslow, Vince Gagliardi, Myles Martin, Greg Luscombe. Photo: Supplied
MOST people spend years asking whether they'll have enough money to retire. Fewer ask an equally important question: What am I retiring to? Q: What are the biggest concerns people have about retirement? A: Money is certainly one of them. But many people also wonder what life will look like once work is no longer part of the routine. Q: What does a successful retirement look like? A: There's no single answer. For some it's travelling or spending more time with family, volunteering, golf, gardening or
simply slowing down. A question worth asking is: What does a great week in retirement look like for me? Q: Is it too late to try something new? A: Not at all. Research suggests only around 23 per cent of people take up something completely new in retirement. Whether it's joining a club, volunteering, learning a skill or revisiting an old hobby, retirement can be a chance to explore new interests and connections.
Q: How can a financial advisor help? A: A good retirement plan is about more than money. Financial advisors help people understand whether they have enough income to support the lifestyle they want, while also helping them plan for the years ahead with confidence. After all, retirement isn't simply about finishing work. It's about having the confidence and freedom to enjoy the next chapter.

Hearing loss: The signs to look for and what you can do about it HEARING loss often develops gradually, making it easy to miss the early signs. You may find yourself asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to follow conversations in noisy environments, or turning the television volume up more than usual. While these changes may seem minor, untreated hearing loss can affect communication, relationships, confidence, and overall quality of life. TO learn more about hearing health, hearing tests, and modern hearing technology, we spoke with the team at Hearing Australia Shepparton. Q: How do I know if I have hearing loss? A: A common sign of hearing loss is difficulty understanding speech, particularly when there is background noise. You may feel that people are mumbling, frequently ask others to repeat themselves, or feel tired after social situations because listening requires extra concentration. If you've noticed any changes in your hearing, a hearing check is the best place to start. Early action can help you stay connected with family, friends, work, and the activities you enjoy. Q: What happens during a hearing test? A: A hearing test is simple, painless, and usually takes about an hour. You'll listen to a range of sounds through headphones and indicate when you hear them. The results provide a clear picture of your hearing levels and help determine whether support or treatment may be beneficial. Q: Are hearing aids still big and noticeable? A: Not anymore. Modern hearing aids are smaller, more comfortable, and packed with advanced features. Many models are discreet and include Bluetooth connectivity, rechargeable batteries, and automatic adjustments for different listening environments. Most people are pleasantly surprised by how easy they are to wear.
A SIMPLE CHECK... Modern hearing tests and technology can help people understand their hearing and stay connected to the people and activities they enjoy. Pictured from the Hearing Australia Shepparton team are Sarah Cotterill, Terri Ly, Alvaro Rosales, Patrick Tyler, and Clair Haines. Photo: Deanne Jeffers
Q: Will hearing aids help? A: For many people, hearing aids significantly improve communication, make social activities more enjoyable, and reduce the effort required to listen throughout the day. Hearing solutions are tailored to individual needs and lifestyles. Q: How much do they cost? A: There are options to suit a range of budgets. Some Australians may qualify for government-funded services through the Hearing Services Program, while others may receive support through private health insurance. To book a hearing check, contact Hearing Australia Shepparton on 03 5823 7500, visit www.hearing.com.au, or call into 205 Fryers Street, Shepparton. A hearing check today could make a big difference tomorrow.

First Nations assessment service THE Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety highlighted significant barriers faced by older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in accessing safe, culturally appropriate aged care, and the need for greater choice, control and cultural safety. Since then, Rumbalara’s Aged Care Assessment Team has actively participated in the aged care reform process, advocating for a more culturally appropriate pathway for First Nations Elders and greater Community control over how Elders are assessed and supported. This work has led to Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative becoming one of only three Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations nationally involved in the First Nations Assessment Pilot. Rumbalara has provided culturally appropriate aged care services for decades, including assessments
and approvals for entry-level supports. Through the Pilot, Rumbalara can now assess and approve higherlevel services, including Support at Home Packages and residential aged care. Previously, Elders relied on mainstream assessment services for these approvals. Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative's First Nations Assessment Service takes a whole-of-life approach, supporting Elders from their initial assessment through to accessing the services they need. By providing a culturally safe pathway through a complex aged care system, Rumbalara is helping ensure Elders remain

Our seniors
have given so much Through your work, your volunteering, your care for others and the knowledge you’ve shared, you have helped shape Nicholls into the community it is today. This Seniors Month, I want to say thank you. Your contributions have strengthened our region, and it is a privilege to represent you in Parliament. I remain committed to advancing the dignity and wellbeing of our ageing population, and to supporting you to live active, connected and independent lives.
At Springtree Cobram and Yarrawonga, homeowners have opportunities to stay active and connected close to home. A catch-up can happen over a coffee, beside the bowling green or during a game of pickleball. There’s room to join in when you feel like it and enjoy your own space when you don’t. Springtree Cobram’s new wellness facilities offer more ways to make wellbeing part of the week. Homeowners have access to an indoor heated pool and gym, as well as the Wini Health app, which offers activities including aqua aerobics and cooking classes. These options make it easier to try something new, build a routine or
spend time with others. At Springtree Yarrawonga, homeowners already enjoy a bowling green, barbecue area and community pavilion. A new clubhouse is under construction and will add an indoor heated pool, gym and more social spaces. The communities’ low-maintenance homes also leave more time for the people and activities that matter. Whether that means travelling, seeing family or simply enjoying a quieter day, homeowners can shape a lifestyle that suits them. ACTIVE TOGETHER... From swimming and fitness to connecting with the community, Aquamoves offers something for people at every stage of their wellbeing journey. Photo: Deanne Jeffers
LONG-TIME Shepparton resident Toni-Marie has faced a number of significant health and physical challenges throughout her life. Despite these obstacles, she has remained committed to staying active and prioritising her wellbeing. Through Aquamoves, Toni-Marie has found the support and encouragement she needed to build her confidence, improve her strength and continue
learning new skills. After joining swimming lessons, she quickly rediscovered her enjoyment of being in the water. With the guidance of
swim instructor Calin, she has continued to develop her swimming ability and confidence. Toni-Marie describes Calin's teaching style as supportive, encouraging and motivating. In May 2025, Toni-Marie also rejoined the Aquamoves gym, where gym instructor Anna designed a personalised fitness program tailored to her goals, abilities and swimming routine. Through
regular reviews and adjustments, Anna ensures the program continues to meet Toni-Marie's needs and supports her ongoing progress. For Toni-Marie, the inclusive environment at Aquamoves is what stands out most. "I really enjoy that when I come to Aquamoves, all ages and abilities are welcome. It feels inclusive."
