RAMATICALLY uplift your home’s street appeal, outdoor entertaining areas or interiors by incorporating natural stone textures that bring both style and durability inside and out.
National Tiles and Carpet Call Shepparton now offer two high-quality ranges of stone finishes, the Ezystone and the Landmark cladding collections, which achieve a timeless stone finish without the complexity associated with traditional stone laying. The Landmark collection features an authentic, rugged freeform look made from 100 per cent natural stone, bringing a luxurious, multi-dimensional texture to outdoor facades, front pillars, cosy fireplace surrounds, and alfresco zones. Because every look is completely organic, no two walls will look identical, ensuring a truly unique architectural feature for your home. Engineered in Australia for premium quality control and reliability, the Ezystone range offers an innovative, lightweight alternative.
By combining crushed stone with natural colour pigments, it expertly mimics real geological textures. This trade-friendly range is faster and easier to install, significantly saving on labour costs while creating highimpact, floor-to-ceiling features. Both Landmark and Ezystone offer the ultimate versatility to transform your property this spring. By upgrading your space now, you will create a stunning, high-impact backdrop in time for summer entertaining, delivering a premium, weather-resistant finish designed to last for decades. Turning home ownership into a reality E
VERY home journey starts with a vision. For some, it's hosting family gatherings around a dining table. For others, it's creating a backyard for the kids to play in or enjoying the peace of knowing they're investing in their future.
While the dream looks different for everyone, the path to getting there often
begins with understanding your financial options. Knowing how much you may be able to borrow, what your repayments could look like, and how different loan structures may impact your budget can help turn uncertainty into a practical plan. GMCU's online calculators make it easy to explore these possibilities in your own time. This DIY note-taking station is a simple way to create a central notice board for your household, to leave notes to loved ones, display reminders or keep on top of the groceries. All you need is an A4 photo frame, A4 notepad, paper or exercise book, and a whiteboard marker. For my framed list, I used a lined page from a notepad as the backing in a $6 op-shop frame — making that the total
cost of my project. You might already have a frame at home that would work perfectly. A whiteboard marker is easy to write with and clear on the glass, while the paper backing provides contrast. You can decorate the frame, experiment with different sizes, orientations and backings, and choose whether to hang it or display it standing, depending on what suits your home and needs.

Seven Creeks Estate scores new sporting facilities By Deanne Jeffers HE final stamp has been put on Seven Creeks Estate, Kialla, with the creation of a new junior-sized football oval that will serve as a vibrant community hub for residents and entry statement to Shepparton. The Cormorant Reserve extension project was delivered by Development Edge, the developers behind Seven Creeks Estate and many other successful communities in the Goulburn Valley. Construction of the oval is now complete, with a white picket fence surrounding the junior AFL playing field, basketball half court, public toilets, a picnic area with drinking fountains, shared pathways and parking. Temporary fencing is expected to be removed once the grass on the oval has established, ensuring its long-term viability. Development Edge Director, Michael Lewis, said creating this high-level community asset was always part of the long-term vision for Seven Creeks, and a project he personally takes a lot of pride in. “We had always planned on delivering this kind of infrastructure for the estate. Building livability into our developments is important
T
to us at Development Edge,” he said. “As someone who has always been passionate about sports as well, it personally means a lot to me that we’ve been able to deliver this community asset in conjunction with Council.” Beyond physical infrastructure, almost 400 trees have been planted in the reserve, which connects to an established all-abilities playground. Mr Lewis said the trees will create a native woodland and shade canopy once established, adding to the estate’s appeal. Seven Creeks Estate has reached its 21st and final stage, with all blocks now sold, and much of the estate developed with new houses. Many local housing developments have now reached their final stages with extremely limited land available across the region. While Development Edge is working with government to fast-track a housing development at the former Radio Australia site in north Shepparton and address the shortfall of residential and industrial land available for development, no date has been set for when this will be approved and ready to progress.
A NEW COMMUNITY HUB... The completion of the Cormorant Reserve extension marks the final chapter of Seven Creeks Estate, delivering a junior football oval, basketball court, picnic area, pathways and open space designed to enhance community life in Kialla. Photo: Supplied

Help bees to blossom
PRING brings bountiful, blooming gardens, and bees play an important role in pollinating many of the plants that make them possible.
Choosing a diverse mix of plants with different flowering periods can provide food for bees across more of the year. According to the Australian Native Bee Research Centre’s Aussie Bee website, plants including bottlebrush (callistemon), native rosemary (westringia), lavender and daisies can attract bees. Avoid using broad-spectrum insecticides, particularly when plants are flowering and bees are actively foraging.
Where possible, choose less harmful alternatives to manage garden pests. Bees also need water and places to nest. During warmer months, provide a shallow water dish with pebbles, twigs or corks for bees to safely land on while drinking. Leaving some bare soil, hollow stems or untreated timber in a sheltered area can also provide potential nesting sites for native bees.
cracking up?
To help bees thrive in your backyard, plant a variety of flowering plants that provide both pollen and nectar, and avoid using insecticides where possible.
Is your home or business premises
cracking up? We can help! Underpinning will help stabilise the foundations of your building and reduce further damage.
Clay soil can be one of the issues found to be causing cracking of brickwork or plaster interior walls. In some circumstances a plumbing exploratory is required to determine if there are any cracked pipes present which can also cause foundation movement. Set yourself up for a spectacular season! FRESH FOR SPRING... From tackling the garden to refreshing forgotten corners of the home, now is the perfect time for a spring clean. Photo: Supplied
S
PRING is here, bringing warmer weather, longer days and the perfect opportunity to give your home and garden a freshenup before summer arrives. From getting the garden ready for new growth to tackling those easily forgotten areas inside the home, a little spring cleaning can make a big difference. In the garden Get planting! While the ground is still moist and the • sun is shining, spring is the ideal time to get new plants in the ground. It is also a great time to sow seeds, including herbs, fruit, leafy greens and flowers to add a pop of colour to your garden. Weed and prune. Spring brings brilliant blooms, but • unfortunately, weeds too. Pull small weeds out by hand while wearing gardening gloves, making sure to remove the entire root or attack with weed killer, if you’d prefer. Prune shrubs, trees and plants as needed to encourage healthy new growth.
•
•
Refresh your mulch. Add a fresh layer of mulch around shrubs and garden beds to help retain moisture, suppress weeds and keep the soil cool as temperatures rise. Top up soil around plants where needed. Tidy outdoor areas. Sweep paths, patios and verandahs, clear away fallen leaves and remove cobwebs from walls, eaves and other exterior areas. A long-handled broom can make light work of hard-toreach spots.
Around the house Refresh your kitchen. Pay particular attention to • the nooks and crannies that are easily overlooked. Vaccuum crumbs from cutlery drawers, wipe down shelves, surfaces and drawers, pull out appliances to clean behind them and give the fridge a thorough clean. Dust ceiling fans. Wipe down fan blades and fittings • so they are ready for regular use during the warmer months.
•
•
•
•
Clean your screens. Use a soft brush or microfibre cloth with warm, soapy water to remove dust and cobwebs. Window screens can also be gently rinsed with a house or pressure washer on a light setting. Organise the pantry. Take stock of your ingredients, move older items to the front and dispose of anything expired. Vacuum and wipe shelves to remove crumbs and residue, making sure everything is completely dry before re-stocking. Freshen soft furnishings. Wash or air cushions, throws and removable covers, and give rugs and carpets a thorough vacuum. Opening windows on a mild day can also help freshen the whole home. Declutter as you go. Spring cleaning is a great opportunity to sort through cupboards, drawers and storage areas. Donate items you no longer use and dispose of anything broken or past its useful life.
With a little preparation now, your home and garden will be fresh, organised and ready to enjoy throughout the warmer months of summer entertaining, Christmas and holidays.

Display homes to inspire better home living DESIGNS FOR EVERY STAGE OF FAMILY LIFE... Simonds’ five Kialla display homes showcase the variety of designs, layouts and living spaces available to suit different families, lifestyles and budgets, with local consultants helping buyers find the right home for their block and needs. Pictured are Simonds Homes sales cadet, Tom Styles and sales consultant, Jason Timperley. Photo: Deanne Jeffers
F
AMILIES looking for fresh ideas in home design can explore five Simonds display homes across two locations in Kialla, showcasing spacious designs suited to a range of lifestyles and budgets. The Camperdown 33 and Willandra 34 are on display at 138-140 Seven Creeks Drive, while the Macedon 33, Mortlake 29 and Venetia 32 can be found at 18 Lorikeet Street. Sales consultant Jason Timperley said the larger display blocks allowed Simonds to showcase some of its more spacious single-storey designs, while offering options for different families and budgets. The four-bedroom Macedon 33 on Lorikeet Street has two living areas plus a study and is displayed with the optional
guest bedroom, creating what is essentially a four-bedroom home with two master suites. It is well suited to families who want extra space, or to multi-generational households looking for privacy and room to come together. The Mortlake 29 offers four bedrooms and two living areas, with walk-in robes standard in each of the three minor bedrooms. Its layout gives children, guests or extended family their own storage and space, while keeping the home practical and easy to live in. The Venetia 32 is one of Simonds’ popular floorplans and is a strong fit for a big family, with four bedrooms, three living areas and a study. The extra living zones give households flexibility for relaxing, working, entertaining or giving children their own space. Simonds has been building homes for Victorians since
1949, with dozens of floorplans available, ranging from threebedroom homes through to large ranch-style and doublestorey designs. Jason said fixed-price contracts and a lifetime structural guarantee provide customers with confidence throughout the building process, while the local team can help buyers find a design to suit their block, budget and lifestyle. For those planning to build in 2027, Jason encourages buyers to start looking now, with land availability remaining a key consideration. Simonds can also assist buyers to find suitable blocks, including upcoming opportunities at Parkers Grove in Shepparton East and North Quarter in Shepparton North. Visit simonds.com.au or explore the display homes at Seven Creeks Drive and Lorikeet Street, Kialla.

STEP INSIDE... Pictured are Rob and Carolyn Gale, outside of their hempcrete home in Murchison. Photos: Deanne Jeffers
LIVED-IN CHARM... Bookshelves, thrifted treasures and comfortable furnishings give the main living area a warm, homely feel that reflects the Gales’ love of collecting and repurposing.
It’s contemporary, it’s eco-friendly, it’s comfortable, it’s hemp! By Deanne Jeffers N a winter morning earlier this year, the temperature outside Carolyn and Rob Gale’s Murchison home was hovering around 10 degrees. Inside, it was a comfortable 22°. There is no air conditioning, no conventional wall insulation, and no elaborate heating system
O
quietly working to maintain the temperature. Instead, the couple rely on the properties of hemp-crete, the natural building material forming the walls of their distinctive home. After nearly 40 years living in a mud-brick house they built themselves, the Gales were already familiar with alternative construction. Their new home has given them a fresh appreciation for
what natural building materials can offer. “It is a comfortable, really comfortable house to live in,” Carolyn said. The couple opened their home to the public in August, showcasing hemp construction and giving visitors an opportunity to see how an alternative building method can be incorporated into a contemporary home.
Once a conventional timber frame was completed, Carolyn and Rob worked alongside Southern Hemp’s David Brian, family and friends, volunteers and even backpackers, filling timber formwork with a hemp and lime mixture and lightly tamping it into place. The hemping took just 28 days. The couple say the walls help regulate the temperature
and humidity inside the home, describing the material as allowing the house to “breathe”. During several days of summer heat, the home reached about 28 degrees inside, but the couple remained comfortable without air conditioning. In winter, they have found it holds its warmth with the help of their wood heater.

PERSONAL TOUCHES... Thrifted tiles frame the oven, adding colour, texture and a sense of individuality to the Gales’ warm and character-filled kitchen.
HOME LIVING... No stranger to alternative construction materials, Carolyn and Rob Gale previously lived in a mud-brick home they built themselves. Unlike mud-brick, hemp has shown them a new way to build, combining a relatively simple construction process with a home they say remains comfortable throughout the seasons.
FROM RAW TO REFINED... The contrast between the unfinished, chaff-like hemp and its smooth lime-rendered finish shows how the distinctive material is transformed into a familiar-looking wall.
BUILDING DIFFERENTLY... Bags of hemp lined up outside of the home offer a glimpse of the unusual material that would soon become the walls of Carolyn and Rob Gale’s Murchison home. Photo: Supplied
The home’s approach to sustainability extends beyond its walls. A solar and battery system supplies most of the couple’s electricity needs, while 75,000 litres of rainwater storage supplies the house. They remain connected to the grid and mains water as a backup. Character was also a priority. Curved windows, textured rendered walls, polished concrete
floors and an abundance of salvaged materials give the home a warmth and individuality far removed from a standard new build. Around 90 per cent of the doors were salvaged, while recycled bricks, collected tiles and thrifted pieces have been incorporated throughout. The build did come at a higher cost, with the couple estimating it was about 20 per cent more
expensive than a conventional brick home. Mr Brian and Sherri Smith-Hoyer of the Victorian Hemp Association have previously appeared before a Victorian parliamentary inquiry discussing the potential of hemp as a building material. Mr Brian highlighted its renewable nature and the relatively little energy required to keep hemp homes warm or cool,
ST YLE STYLE ST YLE ST YLE
as well as growing international demand for hemp and the need for greater processing capacity as the industry develops. Ms Smith-Hoyer believes there is also significant potential to develop the industry locally, particularly through more hemp growing and processing in Victoria. The Gales believe greater local production and processing could ultimately
help bring down the cost of hemp construction and make the material more accessible to future builders. After more than a year in their home, the couple remain enthusiastic about what they have created. “It’s just very peaceful,” Carolyn said. “We love it. Absolutely love it.”

Protect your build from the ground up
OLOUR is becoming a powerful way for homeowners to create spaces that feel personal, comforting and connected, with the latest interior trends moving beyond stark minimalism towards more expressive and considered homes. The Dulux Colour Forecast 2027 points to three key directions: playful pastels and vibrant accents, rich jewel tones and restorative natural hues. Together, these trends reflect a growing desire for homes that feel more individual and provide a sense of belonging and calm. Playful expression Soft pastels are being paired with brighter berry, orange and blue accents to create interiors that feel energetic without becoming overwhelming. Muted lilacs, calming blues and spearmint greens can provide a gentle base, while stronger colours can be introduced through furniture, artwork and accessories. Hand-drawn details, asymmetrical patterns and modular furniture are also emerging as ways to bring personality and creativity into the home. Rich and layered At the opposite end of the spectrum, deeper colours are making a return as homeowners embrace a more sophisticated form of maximalism. Deep blues, crimson, berry and rich redviolet shades can add warmth and drama, particularly when combined with timber, marble, mixed metals and textured fabrics. High-gloss finishes are also being used to
reflect light and create greater depth. Rather than filling a room with decoration, the focus in on layering meaningful colours and materials to create spaces with character. A sense of calm For those wanting their home to feel like a sanctuary, warm neutrals, botanical greens and softened blues are helping create more restorative interiors. Natural materials, tactile surfaces, organic curves, aged finishes and Japanese-inspired influences are contributing to a quieter, more intentional aesthetic. Warm neutrals can be used across larger surfaces, while greens and muted blues introduced through furnishings and decor help reinforce a connection with nature. The overarching trend is towards personalisation. Rather than following a one prescribed style, homeowners can take elements from different palettes and adapt them to their own lifestyle, existing furnishings and architecture. For those considering a refresh, painting all four walls is one of the simplest ways to transform a room. Softer alternatives to traditional neutrals can introduce colour without overwhelming a space, while smaller sample pots allow homeowners to see how a shade responds to their home’s natural lighting before committing. Ultimately, the 2027 colour forecast suggests that the most successful interiors are not necessarily those that follow the latest trend, but those that reflect the people who live in them.
