This is our first sourcebook, something Vinnie and I have created as a resource for accessing the vendors at our shows but also some handy info in the back of the book.

I started the show in 2018 out of the necessity of a DIYer who couldn’t find parts or the intel on building a van in one area. It was also compounded by the fact I was building a Transit! Today there are more than 300 van builders and accessory companies that make up what is now the “van industry.” I would say almost all of them have displayed at a show with us and most do so regularly. Glady, I do see the expo as an experiential event where one can discover the latest in a power system, trade DIY ideas, formulate their upfit plan or even buy a new or used van.
If I’m to come full circle on anything, it’s “why the van”?
“Why is the adventure van so innovative, so popular, and still going so strong?” I would say it’s because of the people who build adventure vans and those that drive them. It’s the van builder being forced to create in a small space. The owner who has an arm’s length list of things they want to do with the van. The builder can’t build a van bigger in order to fit all required elements and is forced to innovate.
Look at the feature list for a typical Mercedes 144 custom seat-2-sleep-2 build: nearly queen-sized custom folding bed, shower, toilet, hot/cold running water, smart floor, air heater, galley, fridge, storage, rooftop AC, lighting package and stereo. ...And of course, enough battery power to get through the night, it’s a tall order but it’s being done.
An RV can do many of those things, but it can’t park in a normal parking spot, power up snowy mountain roads with horsepower to spare, blast down dirt side-roads, or go through the gates on to BLM land and 4x4 to a cool spot over rocks and washboards. The adventure van is ultimately the desire by both the builder and the owner to get off the beaten track, the one that everyones done. The van enables us to dream, innovate, and explore. In doing so we push past our comfort level in design or life.
The road goes on forever and the journey never ends.
