VAN TERMS GLOSSARY
AAuxiliary: anything added onto such as aux fuel tank, aux battery, aux lights to augment something.
Aftermarket: any accessory added to the van after you bought it.
BBoondocking: Not paying for camping in places outside of campgrounds, or BLM, National forest dispersed areas. Not always legit.
Blackwater: Poo water, some vans have these as tanks or the reservoir in a porta potty.
BLM: Bureau of Land Management. It manages over 12% of the land in the United States including over 200 wilderness areas. Many boondocking sites are on BLM land.
CCassette Toilet: As opposed to a portable toilet, the cassette toilet is permanently installed in the van. The cassette toilet includes a small fresh water holding tank which is used for flushing.
CCC: Cargo Carrying Capacity. The maximum weight limit for personal items you can add to an RV.
Chassis: It’s the framework your RV is built upon. In motorhwomes, the chassis generally includes the engine and transmission. Class B RV: Also known as a camper van, is a compact motorhome built on a van chassis. These RVs are designed for easy driving and parking, making them suitable for urban exploration and remote camping.
City Water Connector/Inlet (aka city fill): The city water connector on your van allows you to connect your van to an outdoor water faucet using a drinking water safe hose with standard garden hose type connectors.
Coin floor: a type of floor commonly used in van floors over plywood with a quarter sized circular pattern.

D
Dry Weight: The weight of the van from the class B manufacturer not including any liquids (gas, water, etc).
E
Eighty Twenty: 80/20 is an aluminum building material that screws together, can be cut to length and can be used for everything from roof racks to cabinet and bed frames.
Espar Heater: A common, go to auxiliary diesel heater that connects to the diesel fuel supply.
F
Full Hookups: At a campsite, the ability to hook up your fresh water and sewer lines and your electric power cord.
Fullempty: The state of having a full fresh water tank, full propane tanks, and empty grey and black tanks in an RV or camper.
GGCRW: Gross Combined Weight Rating. This is the combined weight of GVRW (everything including the van itself, passengers, food, water, gear) and the weight of what can be towed.
Gray Tank: The gray tank is the waste water holding tank for one or more sinks and possibly the shower. It does not contain sewage.
GVRW: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Maximum weight of everything. The dry weight is the weight of the van from the class B manufacturer not including any liquids. For example, a Sprinter 3500 commercial van weighs 5,070 pounds and the manufacturer may add 2,260 pounds.The GVRW minus the dry weight is how much you can carry in your van. So, if the GVRW is 9,350 and the dry weight is 7,330, that means you can carry 2,260 pounds.
HHouse Battery: The battery that is similar in function to your car battery is called the chassis battery. This battery powers basically anything involved in driving the van. In contrast the house battery (or coach battery) powers everything that makes the van a camper van.
IInverter: An electrical device that converts battery power (usually 12V) to house current (120AC) so you can run normal household devices like laptop chargers and a small coffee maker.
LL-track: Versatile L-track adjustable tie down system is used in trucks, trailers, vans and pickups to secure equipment, motorcycles, ATVs and even cars.
Lagun Table Mount: A widely used mounting system coming out of sailboat technology, aside from the mount the pieces are removable and can be stowed away.
Lithium Battery: A type of rechargeable battery technology that leverages the unique properties of lithium, the lightest of all metals. Can be drawn down to 80%. Most common coach battery.
MMaxx Air Fan: The go-to must-have cabin fan widely found in most vans.
Mercedes Sprinter Van: The most widely used platform used as the chassis for adventure van building.
The go to model is the 2500 144 wheelbase diesel highroof 4x4 or AWD. Moochdocking: The act of parking overnight at the residence of a friend or relative, usually with permission from the homeowner.
SShore Power: At a campground, shore power is typically provided by an electrical pedestal that has different shaped outlets for 30 amp and 50 amp service.
Sleeping Sideways: A way to run a bed east-west across the back of the van, facilitated by flaring out the two rear upper panels in the van with a fiberglass pop-out.
TThinsulate Insulation: Can be cut like fabric with scissors. Maintains its insulating properties over time. Allows moisture to escape.
Three ways of recharging van coach batteries: DC to DC, Solar, Shore power.
UUpfitting: Building out the shell of your van, bolting parts on, accessorizing.
