Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders

I

n this edition, we welcome the most recent Regional Conference administrator, Dr. Toussaint Williams, the newly-elected Executive Secretary of the South Central Conference.

My connection with Dr. Williams goes back well before he was born! His late father-in-law, Larry Bonner, was my best friend when we were in the sixth grade at Ramah Jr. Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. Years later, when I became the Executive Secretary of the South Central Conference, I was part of a team of people who came to Oakwood to hire some graduating seniors into pastoral ministry.

The four young men we hired became very successful workers in the Lord’s work: Dr. Vandeon Griffin, Associate Youth Director, North American Division; Dr. Juleun Johnson, Vice President, AdventHealth, Southeast Division; Dr. Alfonzo Greene, Senior Pastor, Mt. Rubidoux SDA Church and Dr. Toussaint Williams.

Having the opportunity to participate in bringing those young men into Seventh-day Adventist ministry is one of the things of which I am most humbly proud from my 45 years of ministry.

It is exciting for me to watch these individuals advance into leadership. Dr. Williams moves into the same position that I was privileged to have when we called him to the South Central Conference. On the day he was elected, he was kind enough to call and thank me for the role that the Lord allowed me to play in getting him started. It was a call I cherished.

Moving the next generation into leadership is something that we talk about in the Adventist Church; I am just not sure we are as intentional about it as we could be.

The fact is, Dr. Williams’ generation is moving into leadership. If you look at the average number of years of denominational service of the nine Regional Conferences, the two West Coast Vice Presidents, the Regional Conference Retirement Plan Executive Director and the Office for Regional Conference Executive Director (that would be me!), I would imagine that the average number of years of service comes to 40 years or so.

A group with that many years of service has “more yesterdays than tomorrows.” That is not necessarily a bad thing. Make no mistake about it — experience is vital in leadership.

But so is having a diverse group in leadership. And so is being intentional about having a plan that helps our church be ready for that inevitable time when the leaders of tomorrow become the leaders of today and the leaders of today become the leaders of yesterday.

Ready or not — like it or not — that day will come. To use another expression— “Father Time is undefeated.” In my ministry, time has evolved from the time when, as a young pastor in Memphis, one of the church school board members mistook me for a student, to today, when I am working with church administrators who were not yet born when I started off in ministry.

It seems to me that since we know that the next generation of leaders will take over at some point, that it would be better if we were intentional about getting them ready to take over, instead of letting it just sort of happen. It seems to me that it would be better if the next generation were intentionally prepared, while

the current generation of experienced leaders is still around, as opposed to them only being exposed to leadership because the current generation of leaders is no longer around.

How can we accomplish this? By doing at least two things: 1. Diversify the groups that lead and the groups that select and elect leaders.

Diversification does not seem to happen easily or automatically. We pretty much have to put things in place that will ensure that it happens. We almost have to go the “affirmative action” route.

When I was a young pastor in Memphis, I asked the church to vote a protocol for the Nominating Committee to be staffed with X number of young people, X number of females, X number of seniors, etc. The church accepted that recommendation and we had a diverse Nominating Committee.

There often is a resistance to the “affirmative action” method. I understand that in a way. But I also understand that if we don’t want to be a place where the same people are doing the same things over and over again, then we have to be intentional in diversifying the people who lead and who select and elect our leaders.

fication, i.e., people of different ages, genders and backgrounds, in leadership—you get differing perspectives.

When I worked in South Central, I had a young adult female as Treasurer and a retirement-aged Executive Secretary— two people who were at very different stages of life and ministry and who had two different perspectives. Those differing perspectives were very helpful to me.

I

think you will have the same thing there with President Benjamin Jones, who has been in ministry for 50 plus years, paired with Dr. Williams who has fewer years on earth than President Jones has in ministry.

I think you have that in Lake Region with Dr. Abraham Henry as Executive Secretary and in Northeastern with Dr. Nicardo Delahaye as Associate Secretary, both paired with more seasoned Presidents. There are similar pairings in other conferences.

2. Be intentional about mentorship: I hear a lot of discussion about mentorship. Again, I am not sure that we do it as much as we talk about wanting to do it.

ence, Pastor Monte Newbill. I hope that he is learning a little from me; I know that I am definitely learning from him in our monthly meetings.

The Lord’s work and that of the church is a unique blend of ministry and business; of faith and finance. It is too important to be left to trial and error. Mentorship allows leaders to learn through the experiences and mistakes of others, instead of learning hard lessons through difficult experiences and mistakes of their own.

I am convinced that everyone needs a mentor. I am not convinced that most people actually have one. We need to be more intentional about partnering people of experience who have been “through the fire,” with less experienced people who are about to go through the fire before they get burned by making avoidable mistakes.

The next generation of leaders in Regional Conferences are on the way.

The Fondren SDA congregation in Houston, Texas, has transformed their lot from empty spaces during the week to an Adventist Community Services distribution center. Workers give out fresh produce, dry goods, proteins and baked goods. Tables filled with clothing, personal care items and household goods are also available. Cars wait up to 12 hours ahead of time to get everything offered, and they are served with care.

MAURICE R. VALENTINE II Leaves Legacy of Godly Leadership 1960 - 2023

O

n October 20, 2023, Maurice R. Valentine II, a dedicated servant of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, passed away, leaving a legacy of unwavering commitment to his faith and an impressive career of leadership within the Adventist church.

He was 63, born September 20, 1960.

Valentine was a general vice president of the General Conference (GC) of Seventh-day Adventists at the time of his death. Ted Wilson, president of the GC shared, “Pastor Maurice Valentine’s death is a tragedy for the World Church. He was a very godly leader and an important part of our World Church leadership team. Our hearts are broken with this tragic news.”

Valentine’s journey in ministry began in 1985, serving as a pastor in various churches across Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska over 28 years. Valentine’s life of servant leadership led him to become the ministerial director of the Mid-America Union Conference from 2006 to 2012, furthering his impact on the church. He was later called to the Central States Conference, as assistant to the president, vice president for administration (executive secretary), and president.

G. Alexander “Alex” Bryant, president of the North American Division, reflected on his relationship with Valentine, sharing, “Maurice and I knew each other for over 40 years through our college life and ministry. Maurice always had a passion for God, his family, and for ministry.” Bryant and Valentine attended Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) together, where they became friends. Later, they had the privilege to serve together as partners in mission for the Central States Conference.

Bryant affirmed Valentine’s leadership stating, “He executed his responsibility with a high degree of excellence and professionalism. He would always find encouraging words to speak to those he met and took the time to listen to them, especially in the darkest moments.”

Kenneth Denslow, president of the Lake Union Conference shared, “Maurice served the Lake Union Conference faithfully as secretary and then as president. In whatever roles he served, he was always loyal to Christ, the church, and its mission. Our hearts are aching over this loss. Our prayers are with Sharon and the family.”

In April 2021, Valentine transitioned to the North American Division (NAD) to serve as vice president for media ministries, where he furthered the Church’s mission in a rapidly changing media landscape. Richard Stephenson, associate treasurer of the GC, served with him both at the NAD and the GC, and recalled him as a true visionary for digital media and online evangelism. Stephenson expressed, “I have had the great privilege to work closely with Maurice and he was a mentor to me in seeking new and creative ways to share Jesus.

He shared with me many times his belief that the Church must better utilize media and technology to connect and engage with those looking for Jesus.

One of the Committees that he chaired at the General Conference was Digital Innovation which seeks to use new and emerging technologies to advance the Gospel, a perfect fit for his visionary leadership.” Calling Valentine a spiritual giant, Stephenson continued, “More than all this, he loved his Lord, and his passion was for the Church to utilize every method to tell others about Jesus and His life-changing power. A spiritual giant of a man has passed to his rest.”

aurice R. Valentine II’s impact extended far beyond his titles, as he was known for his cordiality, integrity, and deep-seated missional consciousness. His election as vice president of the GC at the 2022 GC Session was a testament to his exceptional gifts.

Audrey Andersson, also elected to serve as vice president at the 2022 session, reflected, “Having been elected at the same time, I felt a special bond with Maurice. He was a giant of faith.

Always kind, courteous, and considerate. He would stop by my office to talk and pray. No one could meet Maurice and not be touched by his warm Christian demeanor. The Church has lost a wonderful leader. His family has lost a loving father and husband.

he Regional Conference Presidents Council is shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Elder Maurice Valentine, Vice President, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

Elder Valentine served as a member of the Regional Conference Presidents Council when he served as the President of the Central States Conference. He served with fidelity and integrity and remained committed to the mission of Regional Conferences even after his departure to serve other entities of our church.

He was a gifted and experienced administrator, who served our church as an administrator on every level: As a Conference departmental leader and President of the Central States Conference, as a Union Administrator in both the Mid-American Union and in the Lake Union, as the President of the Lake Union, as a Vice President of the North American Division and as a Vice President of the General Conference.

His loss is a tremendous loss to his family, to the Regional Conferences and to the world church. Our deep and most sincere condolences go out to his wife, Sharon, their three children and his extended family.

We look forward to the day when our friend and brother, Elder Valentine, is reunited with his wife, his extended family, and his church family.

Valentine is survived by his loving wife, Sharon (Livingston) Valentine, and their three adult children. MRS. ZEOLA BELL GERMANY ALLSTON Global Educator, Gifted Dramatist, Godly Influencer 1927 - 2023

Z

eola Bell Germany’s life began in Fairfield, Alabama, part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. She was the eighth of 14 children born to Will and Gyzinia Germany, June 1, 1927.

Her childhood years witnessed Zeola teaching her younger brothers to speak “properly;” schooling neighborhood children on her front porch and successfully participating in public speaking contests and dramatic presentations.

Before she graduated from the segregated Fairfield Industrial & Technical High School in 1945, her parents and their younger children were baptized after attending evangelistic tent meetings conducted by Elder Herman L. Murphy and Elder E. T. Mimms.

At that time, embracing the Adventist lifestyle meant that her ambitions for a Hollywood career would not materialize, much to the criticism of her high school drama coach. Instead, Zeola traveled 123 miles north to attend Oakwood College in the fall of 1945.

She was already trained in secretarial skills. Not sensing career opportunities beyond this arena, she declared Secretarial Science her academic major as a freshman. At the same time, God assigned her to work with Dr. Natelkka Burrell in the Education Department. This legendary teacher-mentor convinced her that while her current skills were secretarial, her true passion and gifts were in teaching and educating young fertile minds for both Time and Eternity.

After spending summers colporteuring in Harlem and Houston, she graduated in 1949 with a Secretarial Science degree and with an Elementary Education minor. She began teaching at the Magazine Street SDA Church School in Louisville, Kentucky.

After successfully ending her first teaching year in 1950, she rewarded herself with a trip to Boston, Massachusetts, to study and learn its historic sites firsthand. In addition to this fact-finding adventure, 12

Mrs. Mae Justiss introduced her to another Boston “site”: WWII veteran, local church lay leader and friend, 33-year-old bachelor Thomas Gray Allston. Their mutually-ignited sparks kindled a subsequent formal engagement.

This resulted in their June 17, 1951 marriage; her relocation to Everett, a neighboring Boston suburb; and their parenting of Miriam Dawn (1952), Thomas “Tim” III (1954), Ivan Mark (1964), and Tonya Elise (1966).

However, two weeks after becoming a wife and a year before becoming a mother, Zeola became a Globetrotter. Message Magazine featured her, Calvin Rock and William DeShay, the lone Negroes of the 44-member US delegation to the 1951 Paris Youth Congress.

God gifted her both to nurture their children’s early private schooling directly while returning to her calling.

She resumed teaching at Boston’s Cooper Community Center preschool program, (1957-1960); worked as Principal at the Berea SDA Church School (196264); directed the summer Head Start initiative at the New England Sanitarium and Hospital (1965-67) and integrated the nearby Gerry Street SDA School (renamed the Edgewood SDA School, 1966 -72) as the seventh and eighth grade teacher. Her children Dawn, Tim and Ivan served as its “Jackie Robinsons and Kamala Harris!”

In June 1972, Zeola accepted a demonstration teaching appointment at nearby

Atlantic Union College. Simultaneously, she and Mrs. Delores Richardson were initiating a Boston/Oakwood College alumni chapter.

August 1972 featured her college schoolmate, and now Oakwood College President, Elder Calvin Rock visiting Boston and officially chartering its first-ever alumni chapter. Then just three days later, he called Zeola and Tom at their new South Lancaster, Massachusetts, home, and offered them a dream opportunity: to servant-lead and role model to students at Oakwood.

On Sunday, August 27, 1972, she, Ivan, 8 and Tonya, 6, completed their 1,472-mile trek and began their stewardship to Oakwood College and Oakwood Academy, respectively. While Tom directed Oakwood’s transportation department, Zeola directed Peterson Hall (1972-73) and later became its first Director of Student Activities/Assistant Dean of Students (1973-78).

Equally crucial since 1972, their home became the “Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island” for more than 30 Oakwood students who needed less-expensive room and board and, yes . . . Adventist home nurturing.

Higher education was temporarily OK in serving Oakwood, but she pined for her most genuine passion: elementary education and her newly-acquired specialty of multigrade classroom management. In 1979, she returned to the work as the elementary principal and taught at Oakwood’s lab school. She enhanced her subject-matter expertise each succeeding summer; and earned a Master’s degree in Education in 1982, from Loma Linda University.

In 1989, Mrs. Allston received the 1989 Tom and Violet Zapara Excellence in Teaching Award—South Central Conference’s first-ever awardee. She co-authored A Star Gives Light, the first definitive Black SDA curriculum primer, also in 1989.

At the 1993 invitation of now General Conference VP Dr. Calvin Rock, she taught English in Moscow, Russia, that summer.

Additionally, she led multigrade classroom initiatives in the Cayman Islands (1996), Hatchuchebbee/Hurtsboro, Alabama district (1996), and Pensacola, Florida (2005). Her final globetroting assignment was teaching nursing students English in 2006 in Northern China.

Her Allston family stopped “the retirement jokes” when she left her maroon lesson-plan book and multicolored dryerase markers, Handbell Choir carrying case, dog-eared Camp Alamisco instruction binder, and Black SDA History costumes and scripts to be memorized at her beloved Oakwood Adventist Academy’s (OAA) Elementary School building.

But prior to her May 2014 departure, Zeola Allston was feted with: the OAA National Alumni Association annual award; the OAA Quercus yearbook dedications; and Teacher of the Year recognition, American Education Week, Huntsville, 2013.

Having taught SDA education for 64 years - and across eight consecutive decades - routinely she fulfilled: Oakwood Church commitments; assisted daughter Tonya in her Mom Z’s Thrift Store; kept updated on local grandchildren Aaron “Jay” and Morgann, and California granddaughters Quinci, Ashley, Alexis, and Kobi Allston and great-grandson Zaire.

Her passing came on October 22, 2023. he Office for Regional Conference Ministries (ORCM) and the Regional Conference Retirement Plan (RCRP) boards convene four times a year. Each meeting marks a pivotal juncture for the organizations. The gathering on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, held particular significance as Elder Pierre François, Executive Secretary of the it was the last session for the year.

The day commenced within the walls of the Charles E. Dudley Sr. Center in Huntsville, Alabama, at 8:30 a.m., with a powerful word by Elder Pierre Francois, executive secretary for the Southeastern Conference. He set the stage for the rest of the day, reinforcing the enduring roles of faith and divine guidance in the workings of the ORCM and RCRP. Elder Roger Bernard, Chair of the ORCM Board and president of the Central States Conference offered his opening remarks by giving context and vision to the board members. He also introduced the board’s newest member, Dr. Toussaint Williams, recently elected Executive Secretary for the South Central Conference.

Financial transparency was a cornerstone of the meeting, with a report that provided a window into the fiscal health of the organization brought by Dr. Margaret Neckles, Chief Financial Officer for ORCM. The meticulous financial stewardship within the organization was celebrated, ensuring resources are effectively allocated for their intended purpose. The meeting further voted the PELC Awardee for this

Elder Philip Palmer then offered a comprehensive overview of the NAD Regional Treasury Summit on October 1-4, 2023 in Alpharetta, Georgia.

The ORCM Board Meeting was indeed pivotal, reflecting the organization’s dedication to its spiritual mission,

community-driven goals, and the culmination of a year filled with purpose and progress.

RCRP Fall Board Meeting The RCRP Fall Board Meeting was equally significant, offering a comprehensive agenda that touched upon various facets of its operations.

The meeting started after the ORCM meeting, as Elder Philip Palmer, Chair of the Board and treasurer of the Southwest Region Conference, called for a moment of reflection as members united in prayer.

This commencement set the tone for the proceedings, acknowledging the significance of faith and God’s guidance in the organization’s work.

Cryston Josiah, the Board Secretary and Executive Vice President of the Central States Conference, presented a series of minutes from previous meetings. Then the board voted on the

unity that guided the board’s decisions, underscoring the RCRP’s dedication to its spiritual and community-driven mission. The meeting, filled with retrospective and forward-looking discussions, celebrated the organization’s past and set the course for a promising future.

The culmination of the RCRP Board Meeting was marked by a hearty meal, a respite after several hours of dedicated work by all of the officers. The RCRP Executive Director, Dr. William T. Cox, Sr., delivered updates on the collaboration with third-party administrators. RCRP Research and Development Director, Dr. Delbert Baker, presented the new REAP Program, an online training for pre-retirees to help prepare them for this next phase in life.

very year in October, the Office for Regional Conference Ministries and the Oakwood University School of Theology work together to make Oakwood University the epicenter of a unique gathering. Ministry Connections, a long-standing tradition, recently marked a significant milestone

in its history. In 2023, this event expanded its horizons to reach beyond the halls of theology, venturing into the schools of business and education.

The event kicked off on Tuesday evening, October 17, with an intimate, vital Q&A session for theology students.

After the sun set that evening, regional conference presidents gathered with the soon-to-be graduates in the Charles E. Dudley Sr. Building.

During this session, the presidents handled questions that gave insight into their visions for the future of the church. Questions such as, “What are you looking for in a pastor?” and “Is it possible to bring on board a pastor who is more advanced in age?” demonstrated the interest of the theology students.

Roger Bernard, president of the Central States Conference, highlighted the importance of authenticity and transparency in pastoral roles. The presidents also encouraged the students to remain teachable, recognizing that learning is a lifelong process. They also reminded students to prioritize their relationship with God, since this relationship ultimately fuels their ministry.

The session that followed was an 8:00 a.m. worship service. Dana C. Edmond, Executive Director of ORCM, greeted the students and presidents in the Moseley Chapel. The service started with

a beautiful live performance of “Not Ashamed for Jesus” by Elizabeth Adams, a student at the Theology School.

Elder Marcellus T. Robinson, President of the Allegheny East Conference, presented the devotional thought. He used an analogy that inspired the students, comparing the ministry to a puzzle. Each piece, though different, is an essential part of the whole puzzle. He emphasized that every individual, just like each piece, is special and indispensable in building a prosperous community.

After the devotion session, the conference presidents went into separate rooms for the interviews. The excitement was palpable as the budding theologians accepted the challenge to showcase their potential to the regional conference leaders. The presidents were equally intent in their search for the next generation of pastors.

Additionally, Ministry Connections 2023 wasn’t just for future pastors. This year marked a significant expansion, as students from the business and education schools joined the event. They too had the opportunity to engage in interviews with the Chief Financial Officers and the education superintendents of some of our regional conferences at two sites, the McKee Business and Technology Building and the Charles E. Dudley Sr. Building.

As the four hours of interviews concluded, the event ended with a great meal that brought everyone together: The regional conference presidents, the students, the staff of the Schools of Theology, Business and Education, and the Office for Regional Conference Ministries. This brought moments to finally relax and share some time with conference leaders and time to just contemplate the future.

Ministry Connections 2023 was more than just an event; it was an affirmation of faith, an incubator for future leaders, and a testament to the ever-evolving nature of ministry. The expansion into the business and education schools and the open dialogue between students and regional conference presidents showcased the commitment of Oakwood University to prepare future pastors, teachers, and entrepreneurs who are equipped to guide and lead in the spirit of faith, love, and unity.

As Pastor Robinson said: “In the mosaic of ministry, every piece is unique, necessary, and deeply valued.” Ministry Connections 2023 served as a beacon of hope and opportunity for those who dare to answer the call of faith.

“Ministry Connections is a vital opportunity for us to be able to connect with those who are feeling a special sense of calling to pastoral ministry. We have always had a long-standing relationship with Oakwood

University, with the product that they produce of training young men and young ladies for ministry. Many of the pastors in our fields are alumni of Oakwood University. Each year, we certainly mark this event on our calendar to take advantage of the preparation and of those who are demonstrating a passion for ministry.” Gene Donalson - Ministerial Director of the Allegheny East Conference.

Official Statement from Oakwood University

HUNTSVILLE – Concerned Oakwoodites is hosting a press conference on Monday, Oct. 16th at 11 a.m. It will be in the gymnasium of St. Luke Christian Church, 1800 Sparkman Dr. NW, in Huntsville.

We are a group of 1,046 people who share a connection with Oakwood University as alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and students. Oakwood connected many of us with life-long friends, spouses, careers, and business partners.

Some of us grew up on that campus. Many certainly became adults there. And so many of us either became Christians there – or got to know God better there.

Recent concerns shared with us by faculty, staff, students, parents, and even board members have compelled us to come together. A lack of transparency, accountability and corrective action is what compelled us to make our concerns public.

Oct 16, 2023 A statement from the founders of Concerned Oakwoodites following their 3:30 p.m. meeting with members of the Oakwood University Board of Trustees – We appreciate the invitation from Oakwood University Board Chair Dr. G. Alexander Bryant to meet with members of the Board regarding our concerns. We view it as a modest first step, though we believe it could have been more productive.

While we thank the board members for listening to and engaging with us, we are disappointed that we left without a board commitment to a specific course of action nor a timeline for receiving one. The good news is that while the Board deliberates, Concerned Oakwoodites also will be contemplating our next steps.

We are committed to supporting Oakwood and all its stakeholders. We want Oakwood to survive its current challenges, and to thrive. For that to happen, we believe it is imperative that the Oakwood University Board of Trustees and Administration must intensify their focus on the following: 1. Faculty and Staff Retention: Oakwood reportedly has Hopefully, we can find common ground with the Board more than 60 job openings while also being under a hiring moving forward. But if not, we will remain vigilant in our effreeze. Current and former employees have complained forts to promote transparency, accountability, and corrective about workplace conditions: no air conditioning in some action at our beloved Oakwood University. buildings, ceiling tiles that need to be replaced, etc. Several high-ranking employees have resigned recently, at least one without having an employment option in place.

2. Ethical Practices and Procedures: Some former employees have expressed concerns regarding expectations or orders that may not be in keeping with government policies and federal policies. We believe the integrity of our institution should never be compromised, for the sake of its students – past, present, and future.

3. Student Enrollment and Retention: All the concerns we’ve presented jeopardize Oakwood’s ability to recruit and retain students. Students are the lifeblood of any educational institution. Their care and well-being should be paramount.

The Oakwood University Board of Trustees, consisting of 40 members, held an eight-hour session today. They reviewed reports, institutional progress, and rumors surrounding the financial state of the University which were circulating on social media. The Board considered multiple allegations that were being made against the known facts of operating the institution. After reviewing the financial records of the University, the Board found that the multiple allegations were without merit and did not match up with the financial records. The Board focused on the financial challenges of the University during their Executive Session, which are being addressed in various ways and will be announced once the audit for this year is completed. The Board recognizes that faith-based education institutions face financial challenges, and Oakwood University is no exception.

The Board also appointed a cohort of Trustees to hear the concerns of a group that called themselves the Concerned Oakwoodites. Five members of the group presented their concerns to the Board’s representatives, and the Board promised to respond publicly after examining them. The Chairman of the Board, Dr. Alex Bryant, said, “This entire episode reminds us how important it is in the modern era to communicate more frequently with our stakeholders about the issues around which we feel mutual concern.”

In addition, the Board announced its intent to hold a major town hall via Zoom, which will be attended by alumni from across the country. The Board also plans to schedule multiple visits across the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, which are the major places from where the students come.

Elected Leaders Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists September 24, 2023 | Keene, TX

On the evening of Saturday, September 23, and Sunday, September 24, 2023, the Fifth Quadrennial and 26th Regular Conference of the Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists convened in Keene, Texas to elect its Executive Officers and Departmental Leaders.

On Saturday night, the delegates from the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas affirmed the leadership of Dr. Carlton P. Byrd reelecting him as President for the 2023-2027 term (quinquennium). Along with Dr. Byrd, delegates reelected Pastor Jason C. North, Sr. as Executive Secretary, and Elder Philip Palmer as Treasurer/CFO. In addition to the Executive Officers, the delegates reelected Pastor Vanston Archbold, Jr. as Vice President for Multicultural Ministries.

The session reconvened on Sunday, September 24, 2023, and elected new members to the Executive Committee, Frazier Woods, Jr., as the Lay Advisory Leader, and the following departmental directors to serve for the next quinquennium: Pastor Tyrone Boyd as Church Ministries Director, and Pastor Leslie Soupet as Communications Director. Other departmental positions were referred to the Executive Committee.

Dr. Paula Olivier Becomes the First Female Chairperson, Black Adventist Youth Directors Association

D

r. Paula Olivier was elected Chairperson of the Black Adventist Youth Directors Association (BAYDA), on October 4. This group plans the collective events for Regional Conference young people—such as United Youth Congress and the National Bible Bowl tournament.

Leaders who have previously served as BAYDA Chairs include Dr. G. Alexander Bryant, current North American Division President; Elder James Black, former NAD Youth Ministries Director; Elder Willie L. Taylor, former President, Southeastern Conference; Dr. Vandeon Griffin, Associate Youth Director, NAD and others. Dr. 24

Olivier is the first female leader elected to this position.

She is a native of Brooklyn, New York. She spent the early years of her life in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, before moving to Miami. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Theology from Oakwood University, a Master of Divinity degree from the Andrews University Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary.

Dr. Olivier began her ministry in the Allegheny East Conference at what is now known as the Miracle City SDA Church in Baltimore, Maryland. She also served at the Church of the Oranges in Orange, New Jersey, and at the Montclair First Church in Montclair, New Jersey.

She then accepted a call to the Ebenezer SDA Church in Freeport, New York, in the Northeastern Conference. She served there prior to her election as Youth/Young Adult Director in September of 2021.

Dr. Olivier is the recipient of numerous awards and certificates with recognition from President Joe Biden, for Northeastern’s Youth Department becoming a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

She is married to Dr. Smith Olivier, who serves as a pastor in the Northeastern Conference. We pray God’s blessing on her as she assumes a pivotal role leading our young people. t

Dr. Toussaint Williams Elected South Central Conference Executive Secretary

D

r. Toussaint Williams was elected Executive Secretary of the South Central Conference on October 15, 2023. He succeeds Dr. Vandeon Griffin, who returned to the North American Division as Associate Youth Director.

Dr. Williams was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, but was raised in Houston, Texas. He is the second of three brothers.

He graduated from Pine Forge Academy in 1997, and from Oakwood University in 2001. His graduate degrees include a Master of Divinity from the Andrews University Theological Seminary, 2003, a Master of Business Administration from North Alabama University, 2018 and a PhD. in Character Education from Regent University in 2016.

The South Central Conference called him in 2001, as one of four Theology graduates from Oakwood. Coincidentally, this class included his Executive Secretary predecessor, Dr. Vandeon Griffin. Upon graduating from the seminary, he began his pastoral ministry in 2003, as the pastor of the Radcliffe/ Campbellsville, Kentucky district. Other pastorates include the Hillsview SDA Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and two separate terms as Associate Pastor of the Oakwood University SDA Church.

In addition to his pastoral ministry, Dr. Williams is an educator. He served for several years as Bible Teacher/Chaplain and Creative Arts Director at Pine Forge Academy. He has also served as Adjunct Professor at Strayer University

and Oakwood University, and taught at Oakwood Adventist Academy.

In 2022, he was called to serve as Associate Ministerial Director during the South Central Conference Constituency Meeting. From there he was elected Conference Executive Secretary.

Dr. Williams is married to Dr. LaKeisha Bonner Williams, a Special Education teacher in the Madison County (Alabama) Public School System. The Drs. Williams are the parents of two sons, Eleazar, a freshman at Oakwood University, and Uriah, a freshman at Oakwood Adventist Academy.

The Central States Conference was organized in 1952. This conference encompasses a tremendous geographical area of Midwestern and Western states.

The Northeastern Conference has the largest Regional population and a great history. Organized in 1945, this was one of the earliest conferences formed specifically to foster and develop black Seventh-day Adventist members, teachers, pastors and administrators. Northeastern includes all of the New England states and New York.

Once again, we will share statistical information on both conferences, along with biographical information on the leaders of each. STAY CLOSE UNTIL YOU HEAR A POP How Hispanic Churches Grow and How Yours Can Grow Too!

M

y wife speaks love when I give her hugs, except for when she is cleaning or exercising. She says to me, “Roger, when I am cleaning, I need more help and less hugs.” She doesn’t like to be hugged while sweaty. Being a loving husband, I respect her wishes but stay close by.

One day she was doing P90X, which is a very strenuous exercise routine. If you 34

have ever done P90X, I know something about you: you have been injured, which is what happened to her. She was doing scissor kicks when I heard the pop. She landed on her ankle the wrong way, fell to the floor, and became pale and started to have cold sweats.

Guess what I did? I was close by, so I dropped to the ground and hugged her.

Something strange happened. She didn’t chastise me for hugging her. She didn’t rebuke or reject my comfort. I helped her up, took her to get medical

care, and pushed her wheelchair for two weeks while she rehabbed.

What does that story have to do with church growth through personal evangelism?

Here is the takeaway.

Stay close to people until you hear a pop.

When my wife requested no hugs while working out, I could have overwhelmed her with data which clearly demonstrates that hugs are beneficial to humans. I could have acted upset until

she relented. I could have argued with her. None of those would have been helpful. I stayed close until I heard a pop. Then I became useful.

Eventually, most people will experience a pop.

A child in jail.

A broken relationship.

A financial crisis.

A health scare.

When people who are far from God begin to experience life’s pops and are searching for answers and support, who will be so close to them that the logical choice is to reach out to them first?

Research has shown that people are often open to having conversations about faith with people they know. Don’t miss that part. The old axiom is true. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Let’s get even more specific about the pops we are hearing in our culture. While the older generation struggled with sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, this generation is experiencing another dangerous, three-headed beast: Anxiety.

Depression.

Suicidal ideation.

This should be our main goal as Christians: when someone is struggling with their mental health, we are available as the first option to provide support during the hard times.

How do you get close to people so that when the pop happens, you are the first option and not the last resort? Here are five ways that can happen for you. Since the goal for every Christian is to be other-centered, try these: 1. Cuisine. Everyone eats. Why not be strategic about your mealtimes so you can include people who need companionship, support, and love? Some have

said that Jesus ate His way through the gospel. Just take a cursory look at the first four books of the New Testament and you’ll see Jesus eating. A lot.

2. Celebration. Everyone has special days, holidays and other occasions that are significant in the calendar year. If you ask questions, you will realize what those are. (See the first section of the book listed when you scan the QR code, given below).

Remembering a birthdate, anniversary, graduation, wedding, sports event, funeral, makes an impact. Others may include baby showers or a promotion at work. All of these precipitate a closer relationship, not a more superficial one.

3. Carefully listen. Everyone has a story. Take time to ask people about theirs.

Seek to understand. Appreciate nuance.

We aren’t just listening to further our personal agenda, but to be able to discern where the Spirit wants to heal, bless, transform, and empower.

4. Commit to serve. “How can I serve you?” That should be your daily question. When you listen to the other persons’ stories, you will discover their needs.

5. Come out and play. True religion doesn’t rob us of the joy of living. How can you play with your friends? Beach days, sports, picnics, dining out in the city, or shopping. People connect more when they play and laugh together.

My wife has recovered from the ankle pop. Some time has passed since that fateful afternoon in Huntsville, Alabama. I have noticed a strange phenomenon. She doesn’t make a big deal of me hugging her when she is sweating anymore.

As for the hugging while cleaning part, she nips that in the bud immediately. I have learned to pick up a broom and help her.

All around you, pops are going off.

elcome, Welcome to the Bible Bowl!

This phrase is spoken and sung exuberantly at the opening session of every Bible Bowl National Championship series. And it was no different for the 2023 games held in Orlando, Florida, at the Mount Sinai Seventh-day Adventist Church. The event lasted from October 26-27. More than 300 players, parents, coaches and supporters converged in sunny Florida for the two-day experiences that tested the Bible knowledge and buzzer skills of players ranging in age from 6 to 86.

“The Bible is a source of immense wisdom, guidance, and inspiration for millions of people worldwide. It has the power to touch hearts, transform lives, and strengthen our connection with the divine. Our Bible Bowl aims to bring together individuals who share a passion for the Word of God and test their knowledge of its profound teachings,” said Dr. Paula Olivier, Black Adventist

Youth Directors Association (BAYDA) Chairperson.

This year’s 40th Bible Bowl championship games were hosted by the Lake Region Conference and assisted by the Southeastern Conference. The seven other regional conferences, Allegheny East, Allegheny West, Northeastern, South Atlantic, Southeastern, South Central and Southwest Region participated in and supported the event. In addition, Georgia Cumberland, Ontario and Southern New England conferences also had teams taking part in the games.

“Over the past four decades, this event has not only fostered a deeper understanding of the Bible, but has also created lasting friendships and memories,” said Pastor Earl Baldwin, Youth Director of Lake Region Conference.

Bible Bowl was conceived and created by Elder Trevor Baker, more than 40 years ago. He desired to have a ministry that would acquaint people of all ages with the Word of God in a way that is fun, interactive and in-depth. It’s a game of quick recall and a way to praise the Lord with your knowledge of the Word.

The ultimate purpose of Bible Bowl, as with all Bible study, is to bring the participants closer to Jesus.

“The best part is you will not have wasted your time studying the word of God because there are no losers in Bible Bowl”, said Maurice Turner, BAYDA Bible Bowl Secretary.

SAC 2023 CONVENTION

Society of Adventist Communicators Promote

T

he annual convention held by the Society of Adventist Communicators is one of the North American Division’s best kept secrets. Where else would you find more than 300 communication professionals and students from across the United States and around the world? The 2023 convention brought the group together for three days of in-depth workshops, networking and fellowship. You could find all of this and more in Springfield, Massachusetts, hosted by the Atlantic Union Conference.

Throughout the weekend, multiple events included seminars, panel discussions, and field trips to local radio and television stations. More than 21 highly qualified speakers provided expertise in each of their field. Seminar topics ranged from artificial intelligence (AI), to communication law, to design and photography.

“I really enjoyed visiting the TV station. I was able to get a first-hand look at how organized their media team has to be in order to get the news out on time,” said Araya Moss, communication specialist for the Southern California Conference.

This professional development organization began in 1988 as the Southern Society of Adventist Communicators (SSAC). After 11 years, they cast a vote in 1999 to invite all Adventist communi38

By JENEAN LENDOR cators in the United States. The Society of Adventist Communicators (SAC) was born. The SAC Convention has grown by leaps and bounds since then. There are always key events that everyone looks forward to enjoying.

“Each year seems to be getting better and better and we know that it’s only because of you,” said Brenda Dickerson, SAC President, as she addressed the attendees during the opening program.

One of those noted highlights included the keynote address, presented

by Erin Byrne, CEO at ThinkSisu. She encouraged listeners, “Improve the experience to improve the outcome. Being curious will grow your career.” Byrne also shared vital techniques on how to make the most out of every opportunity given.

The highly anticipated TechTalk was presented by Dr. Bryant Taylor, Southern Union Communication Director, and Courtney Herod, Assistant Communication Director for the Carolina Conference. For more than 15 years, TechTalk has provided an opportunity for attendees to see the latest and greatest in media equipment in action, with chances to win free gifts as well.

The annual awards banquet culminates the convention. Professional and student awards are given in the categories of writing, video, photography, podcasting, social media and more. This year’s guest speaker for the banquet was David Weiss, an author, musician and hairstylist who shared his unique story.

“If there’s one thing the hair business has taught me, it’s perspective,” David said. “Everyone has one and they don’t

have to be anything alike.”

Major benefits of the convention are the incredible networking opportunities that are available. Students who attend are able to have on-the-spot interviews and could potentially receive internships with conference and industry professionals such as AdventHealth and Sonscreen, If they don’t attend the SAC meetings, they won’t have these valuable encounters.

Amanda Hawley, Sabbath speaker and pastor of the Breath of Life SDA Fellowship church in Stamford, Connecticut, said “You are the sound system of the gospel. The creative arm of the gospel.

God called you, and the world needs you.”

hat does your church parking lot look like during the week? For many, the answer is “empty,” but for two Adventist Community Services (ACS) ministries in Houston, Texas, the answer is “Full of cars.”

Fondren ACS moved their food distribution into the parking lot in 2020 to abide with COVID 19 recommendations and haven’t moved back inside. Rain or shine, Fondren ACS volunteers distribute boxes of food to their community every Wednesday. Despite the distribution not beginning until 4:00 p.m., cars begin coming to the church by 4 a.m., lining up to receive a number. Volunteers pack

Service with a smile! Volunteers bring joy as well as receive it through service.

boxes of food including fresh produce, dry goods, proteins and baked goods.

On a recent distribution, volunteers filled car trunks and pickup beds with food for more than 180 families. After receiving their food, visitors are welcome to park their cars and walk around to look over the tables of clothing, personal care items and household goods. Fondren ACS keeps the parking lot buzzing with activity and conversation.

Down the road, another church parking lot is filling with cars as well. World Harvest Outreach (WHO) recently hosted their fourth job fair. In partnership with Workforce Solutions, the church parking lot was filled with vehicles belonging to employers, job seekers and local leaders from government and nonprofit agencies, all hoping to enrich the neighborhood through livable wages.

Pastor Neylon Samuels shares, “We want to be the church in the community, that feels the heartbeat of the community. The way to do that is to get beyond the four walls. By the grace of God, we have been able to find some great partnerships and been able to serve our communities together. We want to make our community a great place to work, go to school and to worship.”

What difference has it made? At one job fair more than 200 individuals gained employment. One of those was Gloria Skeete, who not only found a

job, but she also found a church home.

Sister Skeete now works for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and serves as the Head Deaconess for the WHO Church. Now, when she attends the church’s job fairs, it is with her work colleagues to recruit more employees.

“God is good and He continues to bless me and I know today we will bless other persons and get them a job,” Skeete shares.

How can you get involved in your community and fill up the church parking lot? Here are three tips from the leaders of these two ACS ministries: 1. Collaborate with other organizations. This lessens the load of planning and organizing while connecting you to additional resources. You don’t have to do everything yourself to share God’s love to the community.

2. Keep track of what happened to know how effective it was. This might include counting the number of people who helped and the number of people who were served. Remember to also track the effect of the ministry. Depending on the program, this may include: “How many job placements were made?”

Or, “How many students earned their GED?” These add insight, not only into the number of activities you are doing, but into the difference you are making.

3. Know the next steps you want to take to grow the ministry. Too often our lack of vision blinds us to the opportunities God brings our way. We don’t recognize that the resources are within our grasp because we don’t know what we’re looking for and cannot communicate it to others.

Will people notice if you do this?

Absolutely! Not only will they notice, but they will share the good news with others. Council member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz was on hand at the job fair to encourage job seekers.

“World Harvest is one of our destination churches. The Holy Spirit is in the house. We have willing workers at this church who are helping people to change the quality of their lives,” she shared, “and they are not just here today. They have done many activities, food drives… you name it. Anything that has touched this community, this church has been a part of.”

ACS ministries fill the parking lot, because they reflect the love of Jesus — a love that so many are desperately seeking. These programs demonstrate His concern for their wellbeing. They extend His grace and mercy. Thank you to each of you who are the face of Jesus in your community. t

etirement is not the end of the road. It is a new beginning, the start of the next great phase of your life.” This perspective will point you toward a successful retirement. With the right outlook retirement can be meaningful; life can be great again!

Retirement is that long-anticipated chapter in our lives that will allow you more thought-time, personal freedom, and an opening to pursue fresh dreams and unrealized objectives. In balance, it also represents a time of change, opportunity, and reflection. But each of those words is a kicker. Change is scary because it is a break from the norm. Op44

portunity is sweet, but risky, because we don’t know the outcome. Reflection, well, is also hard work, because we have to introspect, and sometimes we don’t like what we see inside.

Unquestionably, the transition from a structured work environment to an unstructured setting can bring on ambivalence, multiple fears and concerns.

For the sake of this article, let’s view retirement as if we’re planning for a trip.

There is the destination, preparation, transportation, mapping the journey, and the surety of experiences and challenges on the way.

What is the secret of success? Preview, preparation, and pre-learning as much as possible about the trip in advance.

After that, buckle up, start the journey and seek to enjoy the ride. In the following sections, we will explore some of the major concerns associated with the retirement journey. Take time to think through the CONCERNS listed, then practically consider implementing the SOLUTIONS suggested, if you haven’t already. You can experience peace of mind and learn good steps toward achieving a successful and fulfilling retirement.

FIVE POWERFUL STARTEGIES 1. CONCERNS ABOUT FINANCE: What kind of finances are needed for my retirement journey?

SOLUTION: You need to be clear

about what your income needs will be in retirement and create a reasonable plan to meet them, along with a backup contingency for the unexpected. The challenge of having an adequate financial package can’t be overstated. You need to know in advance what your approximate needs will be and how you will meet them. Economic conditions, unexpected financial upturns and downturns are real. Will you have enough to meet your monthly expenses, along with unanticipated expenditures? And what about healthcare costs and the dreaded unexpected financial setback? Few things can ensure financial invincibility, but the following can help undergird your financial solvency during your retirement journey.

• Start Early: The earlier you learn what your employee retirement package is all about and how to prepare for retirement,* the better off you will be.

Regardless, if your plan is Defined Benefit or Defined Contribution, begin supplemental saving and investing. Take advantage of any employer-sponsored retirement plans like the 401(k) or 403(b) and consider opening additional IRAs as you are able.

• Be Disciplined: Establish a budget and live within it, before and during retirement. It will help you manage expenses and ensure that your savings will last longer. Then track your spending and adjust as needed. But also diversify your investments. Don’t depend on just one income stream. A diversified investment portfolio can help mitigate risk. Further, unless you or your spouse is good with finances and investments, utilize the counsel of a financial advisor.

CONCERNS ABOUT SERVICE: If I was involved in active ministry or a para-ministry role before retirement, and then out of active ministry, does that mean I am no longer involved in spiritual service?

SOLUTION: Your role and active profession may decrease in retirement, but your spiritual service and commitment should continue.

Five years before her death, Ellen White remarked, “I hope that none of

those who have been long in the work will think that because they are growing old, they are incapacitated for service.

I hope that they will stand up to bear their message as long as they have the evidence that the Lord is helping them” (The Retirement Years, p. 31).

• The guiding service principle in retirement is — albeit a different pace, space and place is this -- everyone should remain active and ready to serve, “instant in season and out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2 throughout the length of their lives.

That service can include preaching, teaching, giving Bible studies, health and wellness education, witnessing, and doing humanitarian work.

• Believers in retirement have a ready field for fruitful effort among their family, friends, church, and community.

There is a multitude of service possibilities to support and advance the work of God. You just must discover them.

“Retirement is a blank sheet of paper. It is a chance to redesign your life into something new and different.” Patrick Foley 3. CONCERNS ABOUT MENTAL OUTLOOK: What if I get bored and/or feel lonely in retirement?

SOLUTION: No doubt, you will experience some emotional or social adjustments if you’re used to being in an active work environment. At least for a while.

There are numerous activities that you can purposely engage in that will help you to emotionally transition into the retirement zone. Here are some: • Relaxation Outlets: Retirement is the ideal time to explore passions and hobbies that you didn’t have time for before. Whether it’s painting, gardening, or learning a musical instrument or new language, staying engaged in activities you love will help retirement to be appealing and enjoyable.

• Service Opportunities: Volunteer-

ing and service activities will give you a sense of purpose. They will also provide social outlets and connect you with like-minded individuals. Also, your local church life provides a vast area of charitable and service avenues.

• Social Connections: Stay in touch with friends and former colleagues. Regular social interactions can help combat feelings of loneliness. Join local clubs, book groups, or social organizations to meet new people and foster friendships.

Some retirees have found fulfillment in part-time jobs, home businesses and online occupations, that may have social connections and be humanitarian in nature.

“Retirement is not a time to retire from meaningful challenges; it’s a time to take on new ones.” Unknown 4. CONCERNS ABOUT HEALTH: As people age, there are natural concerns about declining health and fears about debilitating illnesses, chronic pain, or the inability to take care of oneself.

These realities can cast a shadow over retirement dreams.

SOLUTION: While these concerns are realistic, they should be just that, concerns. They must be managed so they don’t become draining fears and nagging anxieties. Sound wellness principles; preventive habits, when possible; adequate medical care and faith and trust in God will guide us.

Throughout our lives, and in retirement, health and wellness remain the platform on which we develop character.

Ellen White reminds us that “The body is a most important medium through which the mind and the soul are developed for the upbuilding of character.” (Mind, Character and Personality, vol. 2, p. 406). Let your concern be to prioritize the personal principles of health and wellness Follow Natural Health Laws: “Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power — these are the true remedies” (Ministry of Healing, p. 127). Know and apply these principles personally, and then share them with others. They will help you to maximize your health and wellness capacity. Engage in activities that challenge your body and mind, such as exercise, outdoor activities, reading, critical thinking and writing, engaging games and learning new skills. These principles can also help reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

Facilitate Regular Check-ups: Consult your healthcare provider for routine check-ups and screenings. Early detection of mental health and general health issues can lead to more effective treatment. Investigate long-term care options and consider long-term care insurance to provide for potential health needs in the future.

Remember this wisdom from Scripture, even for retirement: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” Romans 12:1.

5. CONCERNS ABOUT PURPOSE: Many retirees dread losing their sense of purpose and identity once they no longer have a career to define them. This can lead to feelings of aimlessness and emptiness. But it doesn’t have to.

you have opportunities to discover and create new purpose, identity and potential.

At 59 years of age, Ellen White made an encouraging statement on the potential of the retirement period. She commented that that one can make“continual improvement” in the retirement years. She noted that “the afternoon sun” of this “life may be more mellow and productive of fruit than the morning sun.” Further, she added this superlative, noting that in the retirement years the [sun of life] “may continue to increase in size and brightness until it drops behind the western hills” (The Review and Herald, April 6, 1886).

Fifteen years later, in 1911, she illustrated this potential principle by highlighting that God blessed the Apostle John to write the book of Revelation in his old age; that He gave John more communications from heaven in his 90s than He had given him in all the former years of his life (Acts of the Apostles, p.

573). Interestingly, John made his epic contribution in trials, suffering and imprisonment.

Here are two ways to increase your purpose and potential in retirement: • Attempt Fresh Goals: Identify goals and aspirations for your retirement years. These could include traveling, mentoring, or starting a new business.

Remember, your goals can be realized in spite of suffering, sickness and trials.

The Bible writer then makes it clear that Abimelech has not had the opportunity to come near to Sarah and then Abimelech protests to God that he was lied to and had only taken Sarah into his home because he was told she was available.

WHAT HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED? There is a lifelong relationship between childhood trauma and faith maturity.

n Genesis 20, we find the account of Abraham and Sarah lying to Abimelech. Now, this was a particularly dangerous and pernicious lie. What made this lie so serious and possibly harmful, is that two chapters earlier, God promised Abraham and Sarah that within a year Sarah would hold her own baby in her arms. And this narrative falls within the timeframe that Sarah will conceive and give birth to a child.

We don’t know if Sarah was pregnant yet, but if she was pregnant, she was obviously not showing. Abimelech is attracted to her and believes the lie that she was only Abraham’s sister. God intervenes to ensure that there is no question about Isaac’s paternity. God showed up in a vision of the night to Abimelech and said to him in Genesis 20:3 (NASB95), “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is married.”

The Bible writer then makes it clear that Abimelech has not had the opportunity to come near to Sarah and then Abimelech protests to God that he was lied to and had only taken Sarah into his home because he was told she was available. God responds to Abimelech’s protestations in Genesis 20:6 (NASB95) . . . .“Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also kept you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.”

Don’t ignore this point: God says that He kept Abimelech from sinning against Him. Not sinning against Abraham or sinning against Sarah, but sinning against Him, God. What is the sin that Abimelech is about to perpetrate against God? It’s the sin of preventing God from keeping His promise to Abraham and Sarah. God promised Abraham and Sarah that their baby, not Abimelech and Sarah’s

baby, but Abraham and Sarah’s baby would not only become a nation but that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through this child of promise, which is a reference to the birth of the Messiah.

But it is what happens the next morning that gives rise to this article. The Bible says that Abimelech confronts Abraham on his lying, wanting to know what Abraham had against him and his people. And then he asks one of the most penetrating and insightful questions in all of Scripture in Genesis 20:10 (NASB95) . . . “What have you encountered, that you have done this thing?”

Other translations of the Bible render this question in the following ways: Genesis 20:10 (NKJV): “What did you have in view, that you have done this thing?”

Genesis 20:10 (NIV84): “What was your reason for doing this?”

Genesis 20:10 (NRSV): “What were you thinking of, that you did this thing?”

“What have you encountered?” is the question we need to ask more often in our churches and in our religious communities.

T

hat is the question we need to ask the controlling member of the church who is so domineering that they want to dictate everything from the color of the carpet to the arrangement of the pulpit furniture.

That is the question we need to ask the member who is on their third or fourth marriage with all of the previous spouses still alive.

That is the question we need to ask the teenage girl who is now pregnant.

That is the question we need to ask of members who are struggling with various addictions.

That is the question that we need to ask of members who find it difficult to pray; who find it hard to be faithful to God in times of temptation; who find it a struggle to grow spiritually. But not only must we ask this question of members of our churches—there may be those of us who need to ask this question of ourselves . . .

“What have we encountered?”

Abraham’s response to Abimelech’s query is quite insightful. Abraham says in verse 11, that his faith has been so damaged that He did not believe that God could protect him in this environment; he 50

was afraid of dying. This is quite remarkable, given that Abraham entertains three heavenly visitors and, in that conversation in Genesis 18, God promises him and Sarah a baby.

Additionally, he bargains with God for the salvation of Lot and his family. Yet something has so damaged his faith that he believes he could die without God fulfilling His promise. And then he goes on in verse 12 to share with Abimelech part of what damaged his faith early in life.

Abraham says in Genesis 20:12 (NASB95), “Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother . . . .”

The trauma that first damages Abraham’s faith begins when Abraham was about 10 years old, when his baby sister is born. She is his half-sister. We don’t know the circumstances surrounding the conception and birth of his half-sister, but there is some trauma here. One possibility might be that Sarah’s mom is a second wife and his mom has either died or has been in some way demoted or considered too old. Regardless of the reason, there is baby mama drama that impacts Abraham’s childhood. Beyond the normal jealousy between older and younger siblings, add that they have different mothers, and you get a childhood trauma.

And in Genesis 21 we see some evidence that this trauma continued to affect both Abraham and Sarah throughout their lifespan, even after the birth of Isaac. Sarah demands that Abraham put out Ishmael and his mom. It is possible that Sarah’s mom was in a similar position as Hagar, and she knew how that impacted Abraham and his mom.

It is also possible that Abraham was triggered by this request in that, when it came to Sarah, he had been the jealous older brother in his family. In this narrative there is the implication that the impact of childhood trauma does not dissipate with age, does not diminish significantly despite a vibrant relationship with God, and does not go away because one has experienced miracles.

In my research on the relationship between childhood trauma and faith maturity, I found that there was an inverse relationship between the incidences of the types of traumas and faith maturity.

The more types of traumas experienced

The trauma that first damages Abraham’s faith begins when Abraham was about 10 years old, when his baby sister is born. She is his half-sister. We don’t know the circumstances surrounding the conception and birth of his half-sister, but there is some trauma here.

in childhood, the more they correlated with diminishing faith maturity scores. As my research was conducted with pastors and seminarians, this result is somewhat unexpected. One would think that with the theological training of our pastors and seminarians as well as their commitment to spiritual practices like praying, studying the Word, daily devotions, and worship — that whatever brought about initial damage to their faith as children would have been reversed and would be imperceptible at this point in their faith journey. But across all demographics, regardless of age, regardless of gender, regardless of educational levels achieved, regardless of ethnic background—the results were the same. The more types of childhood traumas experienced, the lower the faith maturity score.

In my research, we defined childhood trauma by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) which Dr. Robert Block, former president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, called, “the single greatest unaddressed public health threat facing our nation today.” It has been determined that people who have experienced four or more ACEs have three times the level of lung disease and adult smoking; 11 times the level of intravenous drug use; 14 times the level of suicide attempts. They are four times as likely to have begun intercourse by the age of 15; and 4.5 times as likely to develop depression. And previous research has demonstrated that the impacts of ACEs are seen throughout a person’s lifespan. And so, the outcomes of ACEs on physical health have now been demonstrated through statistical analysis to be correlated with a decline in spiritual health as defined by the Faith Maturity Scale (FMS).

One of the conclusions that I drew from my research is that the associated impacts on faith maturity from childhood trauma is not mitigated solely by theological training and spiritual practices. The challenge is that childhood trauma impacts our ability to form “secure attachments” and unfortunately become

a blueprint for future relationships.

This blueprint can be altered. We can learn to form “secure attachments” but not in isolation. A relational blueprint cannot be changed outside of relationships. We need godly people in our lives who will love us unconditionally and teach us to love securely.

The church is well-suited theoretically to provide the loving, caring community that can cultivate the environment which can help the controlling person to become less controlling, which can aid the abused teenager to not seek love inappropriately, which can support those struggling with harmful habits, negative behaviors, and addictions. The challenge of course is to move our churches and spiritual communities from theory to reality.

It is important to recognize that this kind of love and support happens informally more than we might think. We see it in the spiritual moms and spiritual sisters who walk alongside new believers and who show them unconditional love. We see it in the spiritual fathers and brothers who put a different face on God as Father. But it is time for the church to be intentional about bringing healing to the faith maturity of our members and even to ourselves. It is time for us to take a trauma informed approach to the church. Deadly Conflict Rages in Gaza Hamas fighters took more than 200 hostages back across the border into Gaza, including more than 30 Americans, according to the U. S. Department of State.

T

his latest round of brutal battles fought since Bible times began with an attack at dawn.

Hamas terrorists crossed from Gaza into the neighboring Israeli-occupied, but poorly defended Gaza Strip, in a raid at dawn, Sabbath, October 7, 2023. The terrorists killed Israeli soldiers at the guard posts, then raided small villages and towns in the region.

Hamas terrorists butchered Israelis settlers who were sleeping or stirring in their homes or driving in their cars as they went. Elderly citizens. Men. Women.

Children. Babies.

They also stopped a youth music festival in the area, killing some with weapons, kidnapping others,

videotaping one horrible scene after another, and sending the scenes of carnage around the world.

Israelis report more than 1,400 died during that first raid at dawn.

Hamas fighters took more than 200 hostages back across the border into Gaza, including more than 30 Americans, according to the U. S. Department of State.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that day, “Israel is at war.”

U.S. President Joe Biden immediately proclaimed support for Israel while urging restraint in waging another costly, far-reaching, bloody war. What of the civilians in Palestine? What of the hostages, Americans among them? So much was at stake.

Days later, President Biden flew to Israel on Wednesday, October 18, to make this case with the prime minister.

Shortly thereafter, on October 27, the Israelis struck back at Hamas. After staging troops, tanks and heavy equipment at the border, their response began.

The bombing in Gaza was relentless in efforts to wipe out Hamas. The country was decimated. Civilians, caught in the bombings and rocket attacks, were slaughtered.

The Gaza Health Ministry, run by Hamas, has reported more than 10,000 deaths in Palestine since the Israeli bombings began, including many civilians.

The Israelis continue to seek out and

destroy an elaborate network of tunnels that Hamas has burrowed under office buildings and neighborhoods throughout Gaza, destroying surface streets and structures as they go.

The nearly impossible goal Israel seeks is to destroy the tunnels without killing the hidden hostages.

More than 1.5 million Palestinian civilians have been displaced by the bombings, are trapped in the rubble or are on the move. With scant food or water, medical care or shelter, their circumstances are also horrendous.

As of this writing, President Biden is leading a quiet campaign of diplomacy, asking the Israelis for strategic cease-fires so that the people in Gaza be allowed to receive humanitarian aid gathered by relief agencies and that others be allowed to leave the region altogether.

While a little aid has been shared and a few civilians have crossed into Egypt, including some Americans, Israel refuses to grant a blanket cease-fire or evacuations until the large number of hostages held

by Hamas are freed.

Therein lies the stalemate. need to retire,” Sister Helen Parker told Julian Sylvester, the Adventist Community Services Coordinator (ACS) for the Southwest Region Conference in the Houston, Texas, area. At the time, Sis. Parker was the ACS Director at World Harvest Outreach (WHO), but due to health concerns and age, she needed to step back.

But who would take over her responsibilities?

“We’ll find someone,” assured Sylvester, even though he could not think of anybody for the job.

However, God knows who He needs and only needs our willingness to use us in powerful ways.

About that time, Hurricane Harvey landed in Texas. Soon after, Bronson Salcedo showed up to volunteer with her family and it also became apparent that God had brought the new leader to

the ACS center. As she put it, “During Hurricane Harvey, our family home was surrounded by water, and we were trapped there for about a week and a half. I prayed over the trees in my yard and when one came down, it only leaned against the house. I was so grateful that my family [and I] were blessed and protected.”

Once she knew they were safe, Salcedo began checking social media to see what was happening throughout the city. She noticed that her church (WHO) had opened as an ACS Distribution Center, receiving donated goods that had been sent from around the world to help the people affected by the storm. “In the post, I saw 18-wheelers, and all sorts of other vehicles dropping donations at the church. At the same time, I only saw one family and the pastor from the church.

As soon as we were able, my kids [and I] went to help.”

Churches in the city came together and Salcedo realized that some people did not know how to deal with the poor, how to give to them while respecting their dignity. She made it her mission to operate the ACS program on values that lifted people up from their circumstanc58

es. She found her calling and responded.

“I took it personally. I never stopped.

It became who I am. I realized it was what my grandmother had done and had shown me throughout her life — how to give with dignity and respect.” Salcedo even realized that some of her own dreams for the future were being realized through working in the ACS center.

It soon became apparent to Sylvester and other church leadership that Salcedo was the one God had chosen to lead this ministry. Today she is leading the ACS ministry at WHO, where food is distributed to approximately 150-plus families monthly. The center serves as a hub where other small pantries can pick up food supplies for their clients.

Her next vision for the ministry is for a community garden where fresh produce that is past its prime can be used for compost and seed. A great way to use an existing resource.

In fact, Salcedo’s service and partnership in the community have been noticed by others and she was recently named an Eminent Peace Ambassador for the United Nations’ International Association of World Peace Advocates.

But this is all in a day’s work for Sal-

cedo. “I cannot stop. The feeling I get from helping people who genuinely need it and are grateful for what they receive — you can’t buy that. It’s priceless. So here I am, seven years later, doing what I’m supposed to do.”

What is God calling you to do? Perhaps it is to volunteer at an ACS center and serve the vulnerable in your community.

Perhaps it is another ministry. Whatever it is, following God’s call is always the way to find fulfillment.
