Our experience started in the 1890’s when we provided emergency repairs to the banks of Reno river in Bologna damaged by a tremendous flood. On May 3, 1879 Raffaele Maccaferri established ‘Ditta Maccaferri Raffaele, Officina da Fabbro’ in Lavino (Bologna) for the production of wrought iron items.

The gabion invention
Diversification
‘‘Ditta Maccaferri’ invented the famous ‘gabion’. The old craft trade grows into an industrial enterprise.

The original ‘sack’ gabions were followed by the new box-shaped design, which was used in many large public work projects.
Start of the diversification process of the original enterprise into several industrial sectors: 18 new companies set up, through mergers and new acquisitions.

Reorganisation and re-launch of production. Creation of new products: Officine Maccaferri was the first company in Europe to introduce ‘heavy duty’ galvanising. In 1966 Florence was hit by disastrous floods. Gabions proved to be extremely efficient for the reconstruction of roads and water courses.
Start of a system of partnerships and shared know-how to offer customers a range of quality solutions that bring together environmental protection, costeffectiveness, durability and compliance to regulations. Decisive entrance of Geosynthetic materials into the portfolio of Maccaferri solutions.
Development of new value-added solutions: rockfall protection systems, applications for tunnelling and solutions in the safety and defence sectors. The growth is supported by a continuous focus on innovation, research and development.

The Maccaferri Industrial Group is headed by the family holding company S.E.C.I S.p.A., a company that since 1949 operates in various business areas through its seven divisions: Officine Maccaferri (environmental engineering), Manifatture Sigaro Toscano (tobacco), Sadam (food and agro-industry), Samp (mechanical engineering), Seci Real Estate (real estate and construction), Seci Energia (energy) and JCube (innovation hub). We were founded on innovation and in 1893 we started a journey towards it. This is our identity: striving to be on the lookout for a better engineering solution and leveraging on the knowledge to satisfy our clients. In 2014 Maccaferri decided to create a centre of excellence entirely dedicated to research and development, concentrating in a single place the capital of knowledge and know-how; in Bolzano (northern Italy) the Maccaferri Innovation Center (M.I.C.) was born with these objectives: • Expansion and coordination of R&D activities for all Maccaferri Group’s subsidiaries • Accelerating the development of new products and materials • Centre of reference and cooperation among academic institutions, professional excellence and local communities • Focus on issues related to the environment, including watercourses and coastal works, building infrastructure, waste management etc.
