Connecting Airmen with local history

On Feb. 26, Airmen from different units on Ramstein Air Base were invited to a tour of the Count Palatinate Hall and the Underground Tunnels in Kaiserslautern. The tour was part of a collaboration between the 86th Airlift Wing Integrated Primary Prevention Workforce and the 86th AW Host Nation Office to strengthen resilience by fostering connections between Airmen and their local communities. The city of Kaiserslautern provided a tour

guide, who shared the long history of the historic site in front of the Kaiserslautern city hall at Willy-Brandt-Platz. The Imperial Palace was built in 1158 by order of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, also known as Red Beard. As the first palace built during his reign, it became one of the most famous and magnificent structures of its time. Parts of the building still stand today. Next to the Imperial Palace, Count Palatinate Johann Casimir built the Renaissance-style Casimir Castle in 1571. Both buildings suffered heavy damage during the Thirty Years’ War and deteriorated further after an attack by French troops in 1703. In 1813, the French owners auctioned off the ruins, and in 1825, the Royal Bavarian State Government built the central prison of the Palatinate on the site. In 1842, the Wächter Brewery repurposed parts of the castle area for their brewery and attached beer garden. Later, in 1934, stones from both the Imperial Palace and Casimir Castle were used to build the Count Palatinate Hall, which is still in use today by the city of Kaiserslautern for official receptions and events.

A sandstone marker outlines the history of the historic site. The “Kaiserburg” (Imperial Castle) was built in 1152 by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, renovated and expanded by Count Palatinate Johann Casimir between 1577 and 1583. The building was largely destroyed by French troops in 1703 and abandoned to complete decay in 1797. Between 1821 and 1825, the central prison for the Palatinate region was opened here.

Be ready! Statewide Warning Day March 13

Severe weather, fire or bomb disposal — to warn and protect the population, a couple of warning systems are in place. To ensure readiness, they’re going to be all tested on March 13, from 10–10:45 a.m.

The warning is triggered at around 10:00 a.m. via the Modular Warning System (MoWaS). Various warning tools are used, including cell broadcast and warning apps such as NINA or KATWARN. Depending on possibilities and availability, the municipalities support the state-wide warning day with loudspeaker announcements, sirens or mobile loudspeakers. The all-clear is given at around 10:45 a.m.

Warning apps are an easy way to stay on top of the situation in the event of any disaster. You could customize the warnings to your individual location and warning preferences. NINA and KATWARN are free warning apps available in English at all app stores. Download one on your mobile device and always be prepared!

Many members wait too long to begin the household goods moving process, thereby causing additional stress and delays. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Personal Property Office advises movers to call them at +49-631-536-7727 three weeks before moving to begin the booking process.

Army Nurse finds purpose in caring for America’s heroes

FORT LIBERTY, NC — “As I cared for this young marine, I realized that I was not just a nurse, but a caregiver for reallife American heroes.” These were the words of Col. Amy Hadsall, U.S. Army Forces Command Chief Nurse as she delivered a heartfelt message to Womack Army Medical Center nurses and staff during the 124th Army Nurse Corps Birthday Celebration.

From that moment forward she knew that her purpose was to care for these heroes and their families.

“I was no longer just a nurse, but an Army nurse with a sense of purpose and passion.”

During her deployment in 2005, she encountered a young Marine injured during combat. Despite his own suffering, the Marines selflessness and bravery in the face of danger had a profound impact on her.

“What happened, are my guys okay?” Hadsall said, reflecting on the encounter.

Before this encounter, Hadsall described herself as a skilled nurse without a sense of purpose and passion.

This experience sparked a newfound commitment to training

and education. She dedicated herself to ensuring that Soldiers were always ready. A medically ready force can care for service members in any situation and ensure that they remain fit and ready to defend our nation.

“As Army nurses we have the power to make a profound impact on the lives of others,” said Hadsall. “Whether we are caring for patients on the battlefield or in a hospital we are making a difference.”

Hadsall’s heartfelt message concluded with a challenge to her fellow nurses to discover their purpose as an Army nurse, whether they were caring for patients, mentoring colleagues, or serving their country. She wanted them to recognize that their actions can have a ripple effect for years to come.

“Let us strive to make a difference in the world, one patient at a time,” said Hadsall.

The U.S. Army Nurse Corps established by Congress in 1901, has a long history of excellence and commitment in caring for America’s heroes. To learn more about the Army Nurse Corps visit https://medcoe.army.mil/ameddarmy-nurse-corps or https://www. army.mil/ArmyMedicine

Note of praise spotlights Stronger Together Café, LRC Wiesbaden food service program

405th Army Field Support BrigadeEurope & Africa

The Stronger Together Café Warrior Restaurant on Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden has a reputation for being a high-quality dining facility supporting the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden community and their biggest tenant — U.S. Army Europe and Africa headquarters.

It’s not unusual for the team at Logistics Readiness Center Wiesbaden to receive positive feedback from community members on their food program and the Stronger Together Café, but when they do it always provides them with extra motivation and raises spirits.

Recently LRC Wiesbaden Food Program Manager Felipe Cardozo said they received a positive note of praise from a very satisfied customer. The note said more than 50 high school wrestlers from Ramstein had dinner at the warrior restaurant Feb. 6 and 7 when they were there for the 2025 Department of Defense Education Activity Europe Wrestling Championships.

Besides praising the DFAC for accommodating the large group of student athletes and providing them with affordable and healthy meal options, the note went into great detail about the above and beyond service the café and specifically Zana Edmonds provided to one Ramstein student wrestler with very specific dining needs.

In part the note read, “I am especially grateful for the dining facility manager, Ms. Edmonds, who worked both nights while the team dined there. My son has multiple life-threatening food allergies, and Ms. Edmonds took the time to

double check the ingredients and showed us the packaging for the food options that my son was interested in eating.”

“It meant a lot to both my son and I that Ms. Edmonds genuinely cared about his well-being and took the extra time to do this for us. I wanted to let Ms. Edmonds know that my son ended up winning first place in his 132-pound weight class [at the championships]. Thank you for fueling my child,” the note read.

As LRC Wiesbaden’s food program manager, Cardozo knows the quality work Edmonds provides.

In fact, he said he first met her when she was working contracted food program services in Bulgaria, supporting hundreds of deployed Soldiers, there.

“We are fortunate that she joined our team at the Stronger Together Café Warrior Restaurant,” said Cardozo, a retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 food program expert who served 27 years active duty in the Army before retiring recently and accepting his first Army civilian position at the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s LRC Wiesbaden.

“She’s a great team leader and very respected by her staff. She’s wholeheartedly dedicated to her profession and taking care of the Soldiers, ensuring they get good quality, healthy meals,” Cardozo said of Edmonds, who is a former Army staff sergeant and Purple Heart recipient, wounded in Iraq and medically retired.

Cardoza attributes the Stronger Together Café Warrior Restaurant’s first-rate reputation and quality service to Edmonds and the entire team. In fact, he said it’s a total team effort.

At the Stronger Together Café,

LRC Wiesbaden has dining facility attendants who are Army civilians as well as local national civilian employees. In addition, they are augmented by a team of contractors, and Edmonds is one of those contractors. Overseeing the daily administration of the food program and overall food service operations for USAG Wiesbaden is Cardoza, assigned to LRC Wiesbaden’s supply and services division.

LRC Wiesbaden is one of eight LRCs under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. LRCs execute installation logistics support and services to include supply, maintenance, and transportation as well as clothing issue facility operations, hazardous material management, personal property and household goods, passenger travel, non-tactical vehicle and garrison equipment management, and property book operations. When it comes to providing day-to-day installation services, LRC Wiesbaden directs, manages, and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of USAG Wiesbaden.

LRC Wiesbaden reports to the 405th AFSB, which is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and headquartered in Kaiserslautern. The brigade provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces. For more information on the 405th AFSB, visit the official website at www.afsbeurope.army. mil and the official Facebook site at www.facebook.com/405thAFSB.

Empowering Families through Ramstein Exceptional Family Member Program

The Exceptional Family Member Program offers vital support to military families with special needs by coordinating a wide range of military and civilian community resources. These resources include educational, medical, housing, and personnel services, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for service members and their families. EFMP provides a comprehensive approach to ensure that families receive the assistance they need to thrive.

Understanding the three components of EFMP

“The Exceptional Family Member Program provides comprehensive support through three components: EFMP Medical, Assignments and Family Supporteach addressing different aspects of care and assistance, and all working together collectively,” explained Zuhal Rick, EFMP Family Support Navigator.

EFMP-M (Medical): EFMPMedical is in the Ramstein Clinic (Building 2114, 1st Floor) on Ramstein AB. This component serves Ramstein and over 170 geographically separated units, including Stuttgart, Rota, and Moron. Small gestures, big impact: USAG RP’s School Age Center members celebrate kindness week

The Wetzel School Age Center’s Torch Club celebrated Random Acts of Kindness week by handcrafting and delivering cheerful cards to the Baumholder Military Community on Feb. 21.

Random Acts of Kindness Week, established in 1995 by The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, is a seven-day celebration (Feb. 14-20) that encourages people to spread joy and compassion through selfless acts, big or small.

Torch Club ambassadors filled the cards with uplifting messages and personalized artwork, sharing

their kindness with each recipient.

“You don’t know what someone else is going through,” said Jason P., a fifth grade student at Smith Elementary School and Torch Club ambassador. “A simple act of kindness could be just what they need to brighten their day.”

Annalise R., a fourth grader at Smith ES and the club’s event coordinator and public relations representative, agreed.

“Kindness can truly make a difference in someone’s life,” she said.

“It creates a ripple effect, not only making the recipient feel good, but also boosting the giver’s self-esteem and inspiring others to pay it forward.”

Torch Club member believe that small gestures of generosity and compassion can help create a more positive and supportive environment for everyone. By recognizing Random Acts of Kindness Week, people feel “warm and welcome,” said Torch Club President Joseph O., who is currently attending the fifth grade at Smith ES.

The club’s efforts did not go unnoticed. Matthew Rody, a USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Child and Youth Services coordinator and recipient of a card, expressed his gratitude.

“Having the Torch Club visit me was such a wonderful way to end the week,” he said. “These young leaders truly touched my

heart today. It’s inspiring to see them taking initiative and making Baumholder a better place.”

The Torch Club members think that kindness should be a daily practice, not just celebrated during RAK Week because, as Torch Club Ambassador and fifth grader Elana G. put it, “it’s cool and it makes people happy.”

Torch Clubs empower youth to lead community service projects. In small groups, members identify local needs, plan solutions, and develop leadership skills through hands-on experiences.

405th AFSB’s LOGCAP-Africa supports validation mission in Uganda

Cameron Porter 405th Army Field Support BrigadeEurope & Africa

ENTEBBE, Uganda — Several cooperative security locations are scattered across multiple countries and locations on the continent of Africa. In place to serve as power projection platforms, CSLs can be used when the U.S. State Department needs assistance, or combatant commanders need additional capabilities during joint and allied operations.

Most of these CSLs operate in what’s considered a “warm” status until activation. It takes a total team effort to ensure they are validated and ready for activation when called upon, and the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s Logistics Civil Augmentation Program-Africa is key to ensuring flawless execution.

Recently, CSL Entebbe in Uganda went from warm to hot during an activation validation mission. A LOGCAP execution team consisting of 405th AFSB LOGCAP-Africa Planner Justin Conner, an administrative contracting officer from the 414th Contracting Support Brigade, and the base operating support-integrator, or BOS-I, traveled to CSL Entebbe and assessed 13 activated services and CSL Entebbe’s overall readiness during the validation mission, Feb. 15-17.

Conner said LOGCAP-Africa’s main focus, in addition to translating the requiring activities’ base support needs into contracted requirements, is oversight and assessment of the contract itself.

“That means we’ll work closely with the BOS-I team and the contracting officer representative to track the contractor’s performance. If there’s any issues on

the ground, we’ll work with the administrative contracting officer to make any needed modifications and try to resolve any issues with the contactor directly,” Conner said.

For the activation at CSL Entebbe — which could be used to assist the U.S. Embassy in Uganda during an extraction mission or another contingency

operation, for example — the LOGCAP execution team understood that initial planning called for support to 42 personnel.

“But then kind of last minute — three or four days before activation — they said no, the EARF [East Africa Response Force] is going to be on site, and we need to be set up to support them, as well. They bumped it

up to about 90, and ultimately 83 U.S. servicemembers [from the EARF and Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa out of Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti] were serviced and accommodated,” Conner said.

Validating CSL Entebbe for current and future operations is extremely important, said Conner. At validation completion, he said the support provided exceeded the requiring activities’ expectations, and further insights and ways to improve for future operations were identified.

“Overall, the activation I think went very well,” Conner said. “There were a few minor tweaks that needed to be made and minor improvements by the contractor, but overall the LOGCAP execution team was very satisfied with the results of the validation.”

The 405th AFSB provides and coordinates U.S. Army Materiel Command enablers in support of U.S. Army Africa and Europe through LOGCAP, the preferred source for base operations support and sustainment services. LOGCAP is the contracted capability of choice for the Army and multiple joint partners for emergent and contingency operations. Currently, the 405th AFSB’s LOGCAP program supports thousands of deployed U.S. forces in Europe and Africa with base life support and more.

USAG RP unites mission partners at operations conference

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz hosted an operations conference Feb. 13 at the Kazabra Club on Vogelweh, which brought tenant units and mission partners together to improve collaboration, synchronize operations and streamline planning for the remainder of the fiscal year.

The conference provided a platform for operations professionals across the Rheinland-Pfalz footprint to address challenges, share best practices and discuss key topics affecting mission readiness for USAG RP, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Medical Readiness Command, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, NATO Brigade and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division.

“All the units in this footprint are extremely busy with their own missions,” said Lee Lewis, the Garrison’s chief of operations. “By coming together as a team, we can find ways to support each other and improve efficiency with our tenant units, which helps Soldiers and ultimately, military families.”

Lewis said these recurring conferences play a vital role in enhancing coordination and reinforcing the Army’s mission in Europe.

print is seeing more hospitalizations for upper respiratory conditions during the 24/25 season,” said PHCE Epidemiologist Mark Greenhalgh. “Particularly, we are noticing a continuous increase in cases with each proceeding winter month this season. This is nearly double the hospitalizations we witnessed last season, with March — traditionally the busiest month.”

People with flu are most contagious during the first 3 days of their illness. Some people, including young children and people with weakened immune systems may be contagious for longer periods of time.

To keep you and your loved ones safe, follow these steps to help prevent getting sick:

• Stay home if you are sick

• Avoid contact with people who are feeling sick

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your shirt sleeve, not your hands

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

• Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands

• Avoid close contact with others, such as

kissing, shaking hands and sharing cups and eating utensils

• Clean frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs and mobile devices

Most people are experiencing coughs, fever and congestion and do not need medical care or antiviral drugs, but certain people are at a higher risk of serious flu-

related complications. Those at increased risk include people:

• Who are immunocompromised

• Who are 65 or older

• Who are pregnant

• With other complex health conditions

If you are experiencing emergency warning signs, please seek immediate care at your medical treatment facility.

ABC IN KMC: Otterbach-Otterberg

Our next stop on our tour around Kaiserslautern County will lead us to the Union Community of OtterbachOtterberg with a charming history.

The union communities of Otterbach and Otterberg were merged in a communal reform in 2014 and the City of Otterberg is the administrative seat. The current community consists of the individual towns and villages of Frankelbach, Heiligenmoschel, Hirschhorn, Katzweiler, Mehlbach, Niederkirchen, Olsbrücken, Otterbach-Sambach, Otterberg, Schallodenbach, Schneckenhausen und Sulzbachtal.

The total union community has 20,000 inhabitants and about 300 American families also call it their home.

A game of thrones

Otterberg has an eventful history and in the year 1145 the Cistercians (a Catholic order of monks) founded an abbey in Otterberg. The Cistercians preferred building in river valleys or in swampy areas, and as a sign of their humility and purity they began with the construction of the monastery at the Otterbach (stream). The large monastic church, formerly part of the Cistercian monastery, was built between 1168 and 1254. The church is the most prominent landmark and is the largest sacral building in its original form in Rheinland-Pfalz, located right next to Otterberg’s historic district. After the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century the monastery was abandoned and left to slowly decay.

Otterbach mainly situated along the Lauter River in the Lautertal, has a completely different history. In the Middle Ages the Cisterian monastery owned property as well as a grazing authorization in Otterbach. Up until the end of the 18th century the community belonged to the Leyen family. Of note, from Nov. 28–30, 1793, the community was partially the scene of the Battle of Kaiserslautern against French troops, which was a part of the French Revolutionary Wars.

Count Johann Casimir allowed religious refugees from the Spanish Netherlands, exiled Calvinists referred to as Walloons, to settle on the premises of the abandoned monastery. In a decree he defined that certain parts of the monastery complex could be used to build new houses, while the church, chapter house and abbey house were preserved. Initially 400 individuals settled in the refugee encampment, but the industrious community quickly grew and only two years later, in 1581, Otterberg was granted city rights with a population of 1,600.

The Walloons were proficient cloth makers and tanners, blacksmiths, carpenters and skilled craftsmen. Many buildings in the Altstadt were built by these skilled workers, such as the oldest house, the Ferkelsche Haus in 1606, the Alte Apotheke (pharmacy) in 1608, and the Blaues Haus in 1612. Many 17th and 18th century buildings can still be found on Hauptstrasse, where the Walloons and their craftsmanship played a significant role in shaping the character of Otterberg. Isidor Straus

Isidor Straus was born in Otterberg in 1845 and emigrated to the U.S. with his Jewish merchant family in 1853. The family settled in Georgia, where his father opened a store and in 1874 took over the porcelain part of H. R. Macy’s Department store in New York City. In 1888 Isidor and his brother became co-owners of Macy’s. Isidor also served as Democratic representative in the House of Representatives in the 1890s. Tragically, he and his wife Ida died during their return trip from a vacation in Europe on board the legendary Titanic in April 1912.

Otterbach. With increased train services, transporting sandstone from nearby quarries, more mobility and prosperity was available to the town. Since the tower switched to a modern system in 2005, it is no longer in use, but the impressive mechanical devices with pulleys and antiquated signals can be viewed in the Stellwerk Museum. https:// www.otterbach-otterberg.de/ tourismus-freizeit/museenund-ausstellungen/stellwerkmuseum

Leaping back into the 20th century, visit the Motorrad Museum in Otterbach. The museum is in the former Protestant church in Otterbach where founder and motorbike race legend, Luthringhauser acted as director until his death in 1997. Among other prizes, Luthringhauser won the Tourist Trophy in 1974, the toughest road race on the Isle of Man. He collected 80 years of motorcycle history in flawless condition, displaying international models and engines.

At the end of the trail, you will encounter a walkable sundial (Sonnenuhr) with 12 obelisks made out of local sandstone, which very much resembles Stonehenge in England. While the circle in England is 4,000 years old and had religious character, this structure is much younger and symbolizes the 12 towns in the union community growing together. The sandstone speaks of former residents making a living out of chipping stones. There is a slanted steel column in the middle and each obelisk has the

There are various restaurants and pubs in picturesque old buildings, music events take place throughout the year. The next classic concert in the Abbey Church and the Hinkelstein Hike both take place on March 30. A garden market is planned for April 27 and the time travel covered wagon rides pick up again in April. The season at the openair theater in Katzweiler starts in June and a Walloon Fair is planned for July.

Fun facts

The Abbey Church is the second largest sacral building in Rheinland-Pfalz. Only the Cathedral in Speyer is larger (but was partially reconstructed after war damage).

In 1708 joint use of the church by Protestants and Catholics led to problems. A wall was installed leading to services being offered in the transept for Catholics and in the nave for Protestants. In 1979 the wall was removed and the church is shared by both denominations.

Pappelhof is a great place to discover nature and animals or learn an instrument and visit the colorful farmer’s market in September.

Specialist uses one race at a time

In perfect 45-degree overcast weather, on a flat and fast golf course, a behavioral health specialist pushed his pace for 8K in the men’s division of the 2025 Armed Forces Cross Country Championship at the Windcrest Golf Club, San Antonio, TX, Jan. 22.

At the 6K lap, Sgt. Geoffrey Kipchumba, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, Fort Carson, Colorado, had the second-place spot amongst a pace of Air Force elite runners. With one lap to go, Kipchumba moved to fourth.

“That last lap was the hardest one,” he said. “Those guys were flying. I gave it to the Air Force this time around. I’m coming for them next competition. I just came back into running. This is my second race after two years.”

He finished the competition in seventh with a time of 30:11.7. He helped the men take bronze in the men’s division.

Giving back

Kipchumba said he joined the Army to support his family and to give back to the community. He also is the first person in his family to serve in the military. He served in the World Class Athlete Program from 2021 to 2023 and hopes to serve in the program again.

CROSSWORD

“Running and sports allow me to meet and interact with different Soldiers and people, regardless of their rank,” he said. “I’m very proud to wear the uniform and serve in the Army.”

He said the Army provides for his wife, Mary Lynette, his daughter, Katie, 4, and son, Carlton, three months old, so he loves giving back to the Army and to his community in return by volunteering in community and service projects.

Born to run

The Kapsisiywa, Kenya, native grew up watching future Olympians train near his hometown in Eldoret. He would run two miles barefoot each way to his school, running home for lunch and then back to school.

“I didn’t wear shoes until I was 10 years old,” he said with a big grin. “And those shoes were just for Christmas or church. We only wore those shoes on special occasions.”

Kipchumba said when he received his first pair of running shoes when he was 20 years old, he took off too fast.

“I didn’t know you have to take it slow as a beginner or you’ll get injuries,” he said. “I got a lot of injuries. I learned to work smarter, not harder. I worked with coaches and mentors, ran with more people who are experienced in running.”

One of Kipchumba’s mentors is Eliud Kipchoge, a long-distance runner, who earned the bronze in the 2004 Olympics, silver in the 2007 World Championships and 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Commonwealth Games and has held world records. Kipchoge would see him running in Kenya and followed his career.

“He inspires me,” Kipchumba said. “He has inspired a lot of young kids back in Kenya. A lot of the upcoming athletes look up to him. I hope to one day reach his level, so I can inspire the next generation like he does. He has done a lot throughout the years.”

Kipchumba’s goal is to make the Olympic team in 2028.

“My goal is run 2:10 and qualify for the Olympics,” he said. “I’m hoping to qualify for WCAP again because they have an amazing support team.”

He said picturing his daughter and son’s faces keeps him motivated during his training runs.

“You have to have some level of joy; you have to have some kind of passion and drive to put your shoes on each morning,” he said. “I love running. I feel good when I run.”

He said he hopes to have a strong showing at the 2026 Marine Corps Marathon.

“I’m just warming up,” he said with a big smile.

much to do — from caves and hiking to brewery tours and great restaurants!

What to do in Homburg

Not to be confused with Bad Homberg in Hesse (where the hat of the same name comes from), Homburg lies on the banks of the River Erbach. This ancient market town received its first charter in 1330.

The market square is picturesque, surrounded by fine examples of 17th century buildings. It’s a wonderful starting point from which to explore the town by foot.

Fairly close to this you can find the ruins of the 12th century Hohenburg Fortress, from which the name of the town is derived. The fortress sits like a crown atop the Schlossberg and its ruins have been somewhat restored and partially open to the public since 1981.

Close to these ruins you will also find the ruins of the Karlsberg Castle which was destroyed in 1793 (having been built between 1778 and 1785). It was acquired and slightly restored by the Karlsberg Brewery in 1975. After visiting the castle you might wish to venture into the Schlossberg Caves, which were

originally opened in the 17th century to mine quartz. Children love these caves as they get to wear helmets (adults have to as well of course, for safety reasons). There is a small entry fee (€7 for adults and €5 for students). Call to reserve spaces on the guided tour and to book an English-speaking guide if you need one.

Schlossberg Caves

The Karlsberg Brewery is in Homburg, and it’s highly recommended to book a tour to sample the beers produced there. Not to be confused with the Danish brewer Carlsberg, Karlsberg is one of the largest breweries in Germany. The brewery has been handed down through generations in which the current owner is the greatgrandson of the brewery’s original founder.

The Homburg Flea and Antiques Market (open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) is one of the biggest in Germany and the biggest in the southwestern part of the country. It usually takes place on the first Saturday of each month except in December, which is when the Christmas Market takes place. It too is definitely worth the visit.

The Römermuseum Schwarzenacker, (Roman museum) is an open-air exhibition place where you can see scenes from

life in Roman times (closed during December and January).

Homburg-Schwarzenacker is a perfect location for such a museum, as Schwarzenacker was at a crossroads of two military and trade routes in the Roman era. These were the routes from Metz to Mainz and from Trier to Strasbourg. Some buildings, such as the optician’s house, have been reconstructed. There is also a beautiful Baroque garden to enjoy, weather permitting. The museum is housed in the Edelhaus, built in the early 18th century. The museum is closed in

December and January, and the entry fee is €7 for adults and €5 for students.

If you enjoy walking and hiking, then the countryside around Homburg is a perfect day out with its beautiful, green valleys and hills.

Where to eat and drink

There are wine bars aplenty in Homburg, and great restaurants that offer both standard German fares and others that definitely lean toward French cuisine (France is just a few kilometers down the road, after all).

If you like beer with your meals, then you really should head to the Homburger Brauhaus where you can sit outside or inside (depending on the weather) and enjoy the views. Try the dish of the day which is usually delicious and cheap.

How to get to Homburg By car, Homburg is only about thirty minutes from Kaiserslautern, an hour and a half from Wiesbaden, and two and half hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train details.
