nel of the 86th Medical Squadron and 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron from Ramstein Air Base are taking part in exercise Northern Viking 26, bringing 86th Medical Group operations to the biennial exercise for the first time in its history. Exercises like NV26 allow U.S. forces, Icelandic Coast Guard and NATO Allies to hone critical medical response and security assurance capabilities, preparing for contingencies in the increasingly contested High North region. Rapid medical response is an integral part of NV26 because an increasingly accessible Arctic expands operational demands and the potential need for medical response, while extreme weather escalates the risk of humanitarian missions. “Our job is to learn how to configure different aircraft and do our job in areas like the High North, See EVACUATION, Page 3

Spin it to win it: McConnell AFB innovation by Airman Daniel Obi 22nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs
MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, KAN. — A 3D-printed tool designed by a Team McConnell maintainer is helping Airmen refinish aircraft wheels faster by allowing them to rotate the wheels while painting, eliminating hours of drying time between coats. Designed and built by Master Sgt. Jonathon Holle, 931st Maintenance Squadron aircraft metals technician, the dual-axis spinning stand features a 3D-printed wheel adapter. The device secures aircraft wheel halves in place, allowing maintainers to rotate them 360 degrees in two directions during the painting process. Before the design’s implementation, painters at the base placed wheel halves flat on tables. They sprayed one side, waited up to eight hours for the primer or topcoat to dry, then flipped the component to paint the opposite side. “Normally you’re just waiting—you’re literally watching paint dry. This invention eliminates that wait time.” Holle said. The stand utilizes a 3D-printed
wheel-shaped adapter which fits inside the wheel’s bearing race, connecting the component to a steel frame with built-in counterweights. The mechanism holds the wheel balanced in any position, removing wet-paint contact with flat surfaces and preventing the need for touch-ups. A quick-release pin allows maintainers to remove the freshly painted wheel via steel tube and transfer it directly to a drying rack in the center of the spray booth. This frees the main frame to mount and paint another wheel immediately. According to Holle, the wheel finishing was improved by nearly 400 percent, erasing up to 48 hours of downtime for each wheel set and creating a more productive shop by deleting scuff marks and ensuring a higher quality finish, as well as getting rid of the need to set wheels on tables and other surfaces for painting. This innovation allows for fewer touchups, and Airmen are now able to finish the painting process in one go. Holle, who entered the U.S. Air Force in 1992 and has served 34 years across active duty, the Air
National Guard, and the Air Force Reserve, created the prototype in response to a challenge from paint shop supervisors. “The reason this came about was one of the NCOs casually said one day, ‘Hey, you know it’d be cool if you could take one of these wheels and spin it in space.’ It sounded like it was a challenge, so I took it on and I think it ended up working pretty well,” Holle said. While the adapter is 3D-printed, the rest of the unit was constructed in-house using a steel plate and tubing cuts with a high-pressure waterjet. The stand has been used continuously for four years at McConnell Air Force Base to process wheels for KC-46 Pegasus tankers and other aircraft. Maintainers at the base previously submitted another of Holle’s designs—a folding step for aircraft maintenance stands—to the Air Force Spark Tank innovation competition, leading to its adoption across multiple bases. Holle believes this wheel will also help his wingmen across the world strengthen proficiency in the tanker enterprise.

September 4, 2026 EVACUATION from Page 1 because they have different injuries we could see here,” said Senior Airman Rogan Jones, 86th AES Aeromedical Evacuation Technician. The aeromedical evacuation team participating in NV26 is qualified on the USAF C-17 Globemaster III, C-130J Super Hercules and KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. Exercise planners are expanding flight operations to additional aircraft, enabling the aeromedical evacuation teams to build interoperability with new platforms and
crews. This integration extends to the ability to operate in step with NATO Allies. “Working with our NATO allies does pose challenges because of language barriers or operational kit differences,” explained Capt. Brianna Mueller, 86th MS critical care nurse. “Doing these exercises allows us to ask all of the questions that we can come up with in real time.” Exercises such as Northern Viking are part of a long-term, multinational training effort to maintain readiness and interoperability between NATO Allies in the
North Atlantic and Arctic region. “Previously, we have focused most of our exercises in AFRICOM [U.S. Africa Command] and other parts of EUCOM [U.S. European Command], so being in the High North is a great opportunity for us to practice High North operations that challenge us,” said Maj. Maria Christina Cruz-Fehr, 86th AES assistant director of operations and flight nurse. USAF flight nurses and technicians are training alongside the Icelandic Suðurnes Rescue Team, USAF 38th Rescue Squadron
Page 3 Pararescuemen, and U.S. Navy Expeditionary Resuscitative Sur gical System Team 9, gaining familiarization with the environmental challenges and adapting tactics to the Arctic. This enhances the security of the region by demonstrating the ability to adjust and continue operating anywhere. “There are safety conditions that we need to mitigate such as ice, rain and wind, so being in Iceland is great for us because it gives us that environment that we don’t practice in our home station,” Cruz-Fehr said.
The force-sustaining of aeromedical capabilities show how integrated and forward-based U.S. operations with NATO Allies can project decisive and unified power across the region, ensuring critical medical care is ready anywhere its needed. “Our job is important because not only are all of us taking care of patients and fellow members during the worst day of their life, we are also providing critical care to those that might not even remember it, ensuring that they survive and make it home to their families,” Mueller said.

How do pharmaceutical residues get into our waters? Medicines are not fully absorbed by the body. In part they are chemically unchanged when excreted. Ointments are rinsed off the skin when washing. In this way, via municipal sewage large amounts of pharmaceutical degradation products are emitted into soil and water with human and animal excretions. Carelessness and incorrect disposal of drugs down the drain or toilet increase the concentration of this chemical cocktail in our wastewater. As
sewage plants are not yet able to absorb, convert or bind these substances diffused in the wastewater, the amount of pharmaceutical residues in streams, rivers and lakes is increasing constantly. To a certain extent, they can even be found in drinking water. This is how drug residues potentially affect our health and have a very negative impact on microorganisms and fish. If at all, it is very difficult to biologically degrade medicinal products. Once they have entered the water cycle, they are hard to remove. This makes it even more important that we avoid or at least reduce the release of medicinal products in the environment as much as possible. In Kaiserslautern County, non-recyclable waste is incinerated at very high temperatures. Therefore, you are allowed to dispose of medicines in your container for non-recyclable waste (black can).
How to safely dispose of medicines Never flush unused medicine down the drain or toilet! Please wrap it into a newspaper or paper bag, put it into a waste bag, tie up the bag and throw it into the black can. The reason for this procedure is that the can might topple before it is emptied or that children look into it and mistake pills for sweets. If the package insert contains a specific note (e.g. for cytostatic agents in cancer drugs), do not dispose of these drugs in the black can but take them to the hazardous waste truck (Umweltmobil) or the ZAK recycling center. By doing so, you can prevent unauthorized access by third persons. Paper boxes and inserts go in the paper can. It is not required to remove pills from their direct packaging (the so-called blister pack). You can discard the entire blister pack in the can for non-recyclable waste.

by German American Community Office More and more residues of medicinal products, even dangerous substances, are being detected in surface waters. This is an alarming fact and we want to take the opportunity to provide information on the subject.
When disposing of objects with points or sharp edges (glass ampoules, syringes, etc.) you should use a non-penetrable box with a screw cap and put the box in the black can. If you are unsure whether a certain medicine can be considered non-recyclable waste, you always have the option to take it to the ZAK recycling center or the hazardous waste truck. While pharmacies are not obliged to take back unused or expired drugs, some offer this customer service on a voluntary basis. Avoid drug residues It is vital to act responsibly when handling medicinal products. Please check your supplies for medicines that are still usable before buying new products. In this way, you can avoid medical waste before it occurs.

Eyes up: Community vigilance strengthens Ramstein operational security by Senior Airman Olivia Sampson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Kaiserslautern Military Community members can help protect operational security by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity in the area. The Air Force Eagle Eyes program provides military personnel, civilian employees and community members with resources on recognizing and reporting suspicious activity, including unusual surveillance, attempts to test security measures and drone sightings. “The community acts as a massive force multiplier,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Bradley Cooper, 86th Security Forces Squadron Police Services noncommissioned officer in charge. “Our personnel, families and local civilians live and work in every corner of the Kaiserslautern Military Community. You are the baseline for what
looks ‘normal’ making you the first to notice when something is out of place.” Reports provide the 86th SFS, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations information that can help identify activity requiring further attention. Suspicious activity can include individuals photographing or recording buildings, gates or security features; asking unusually detailed questions about military operations, security or schedules; attempting to bypass or test security measures and unfamiliar vehicles remaining near installation perimeters for extended periods. Community members do not need to determine whether an observation poses a threat before reporting it. Even a seemingly minor detail may become important when considered with other information. “Never self-filter,” Cooper said. “It is
always better to report and be wrong than to stay silent.” Providing specific details can help security personnel assess a report. Cooper recommends using the SALUTE framework: size, activity, location, unit or identifying information, time and equipment. That vigilance also extends to drone activity. The KMC should report drone or possible drone sightings on or around the installation and allow SFS, OSI and other agencies to determine whether further action is necessary. Individuals should not approach a suspected drone operator or attempt to shoot down, throw objects at or otherwise interfere with a drone. Early detection and reporting of unmanned aircraft systems helps security personnel assess potential risks to personnel, resources and Ramstein's logistics mission.
“There is no such thing as a ‘bad report,’” Cooper said. “Threat deterrence is a team effort, and community vigilance is our first line of defense. Trust your instincts; if something feels wrong, report it immediately and let the professionals make the determination.” To report suspicious activity or drone sightings on or around the installation, contact: Ramstein Security Forces Base Defense Operations Center DSN: 480-2050 Commercial: +49 (0) 6371-47-2050 Vogelweh Security Forces DSN: 489-6060 Commercial: +49 (0) 631-536-6060 Air Force Office of Special Investigations DSN: 480-2095 / 2381 Commercial: +49 (0) 6371-47-2095

KEFLAVIK AIR BASE, ICELAND — As the Arctic becomes more accessible and complex, a 75-year defense partnership between the United States and Iceland remains vital to North Atlantic stability. Meeting modern security challenges head-on at the “Gateway to the Arctic,” the 37th Airlift Squadron is playing a vital role in exercise Northern Viking 26, Aug. 22-Sept. 3. Iceland sits at the crossroads of increasingly accessible maritime corridors with new transit routes and resources in the Arctic and High North setting the stage for increased activity and competition. Northern Viking is a biennial military exercise hosted by Iceland and led by the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet. Eleven NATO nations have joined this iteration, which includes training events taking place across Iceland. The 37th AS, based out of Ramstein Air Base, arrived Aug. 21 to support NV26 and test their training in the north’s austere environment. They brought two U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft to engage in specialized operations alongside NATO Allies. U.S. Air Force Capt. Jill Ruane, 37th AS pilot, explained how critical operating in new environments is to sharpening unit readiness. “Our participation in Northern Viking this year is super important because we’re working with other countries, other branches, other air platforms, and it’s really great training for us,” Ruane said. The goal of Northern Viking 26 is to bring together U.S., Icelandic and NATO Allied activities in the Arctic into one overarching opera-
tional approach to the region to maintain a stable and prosperous Arctic region. Exercise missions hone partner nations’ ability to seamlessly operate together. The nine-day exercise includes a wide variety of missions, testing force readiness for everything from rapid power projection to humanitarian aid. The objective for the 37th AS is to train in extreme conditions that pose unique challenges, testing crew readiness as well as the limits of the C-130J aircraft. “This airplane is very versatile; it can do a lot so it’s really fun when we get to go out and actually put those types of things to practice,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Lydia Knight, 37th AS loadmaster. “Especially here in the higher regions where it’s colder, we have procedures that we get to do, so it’s really fun to actually implement those. That way if circumstances arise where we have to do them, we know we have the skills and the wherewithal to execute.” U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Tessa Townsend, 37th AS loadmaster, described the various missions they were called on to perform during Northern Viking such as cargo drop, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, and formation flights. The 37th AS uses the slick variant of the C-130J, meaning it is highly adaptable. “We’re not modified for any specific mission set, so we can configure to a lot of other things,” Townsend said. “We move people, cargo, pretty much anything, that needs to be tactically moved. We’re your guys.” The crew are trained experts on their diverse mission sets, but training in the High North opens
the door to an even broader array of conditions. Ruane spoke about the tactical flying she looked forward to throughout the exercise, to include her favorite low-altitude flying permitted by the exercise’s Icelandic hosts. “We had the opportunity to practice at landing zones which are different than your typical airport,” Ruane said, “We landed on a beach for example and a grass field. This airplane can really do it all.” This ability to operate independent of infrastructure matters for combat and personnel recovery missions alike. Training on unimproved surfaces expands operational access and reduces dependence on permanent runways, increasing the resilience and mobility of Allied airlift forces and giving commanders additional options to disperse, position and sustain forces. “We’re working with a special platform of airdrop where we can guide it exactly where we want it to go. That really gives us versatility in being able to resupply people in various situations,” Knight said. “If anything happens with this inclement weather, someone’s stuck somewhere they need food or water, we’re able to get that directly to them. Especially in places like Iceland where weather can be a challenge for a lot of different aircraft.” NV26 is not only vital to training for the conditions normally found in the High North, but to building cohesion between U.S. and the 11 participating NATO Allies. Ruane spoke about the 37th AS having the opportunity to interact with Allies at Ramstein Air Base where they’re located, but noted how the exercise had
A U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron maneuvers across a sand landing zone in Rømø, Denmark, during exercise Northern Viking 26, Aug. 25 Repeated operations on unimproved surfaces build the aircrew proficiency needed to establish and sustain air mobility from dispersed locations. NV26 prepares U.S. and NATO Allied forces to respond decisively in an increasingly contested North Atlantic and Arctic security environment.
brought that collaboration to another level. “We’re getting to stretch our cultural competency muscles that allow us to interact with different people from all over the world who have different ways of doing
things,” Ruane said. “It’s really important to understand that every person is different, every country is different, but we still have to be able to work as a team to be able to provide security in the High North region and all over the globe.”

NAVAL STATION ROTA, SPAIN – Along Spain’s southern coast the 725th Air Mobility Squadron is turning the unique pressures at Naval Station Rota into a testing ground for a more deliberate approach to developing resiliency. “This squadron has some of the best Airmen in the Air Force, and I want to make sure they have every resource available to them,” said Lieutenant Colonel Brad Seehawer, 725th AMS commander. Centered on connection, belonging and the needs of Airmen and their families, the squadron’s plan is striking at the heart of specific stressors facing its personnel. As an Air Force tenant unit at a Spanish-controlled naval station, the 725th AMS operates without a broader Air Force community. World events greatly impact the flow of mobility aircraft through NAVSTA Rota which can shift operational tempo dramatically. Family members often struggle to find employment in Spain and homes off base can feel isolated. “We asked ourselves what we could do to help Airmen through tough times and improve their connectedness,” Seehawer said. “So, we looked at the Air Force resilience curriculum.” The Air Force adopted its curriculum in 2010 from an Army
program. Initially designed to help Soldiers manage post-traumatic stress disorder, it evolved to equip service members with practical skills for navigating a broader range of stressful situations. Today, it is known as the Integrated Resilience model. “We started thinking about how we could use this curriculum as the jumping off point for expanding resilience into something more applicable to the squadron,” Seehawer said. The result was the 725th AMS Resilience Plan, a 14-page strategy outlining how the squadron is aiming to improve the connectedness and belonging of Airmen and their families. Organized around key focus areas like physical fitness, emotional intelligence and grit, the plan treats resilience not as a stand-alone requirement, but something woven into everyday squadron life. The plan outlines goals tied to tangible actions like small group discussions, spouse and family events, sleep, nutrition and even social media. “I love what you’ve done here, and I love this plan,” said Colonel Angela Polsinelli, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing commander, on a recent visit to the squadron. “It gives you measurable goals for an immeasurable concept. No single action solves all challenges, but added together, these focused efforts
build more resilient Airmen.” Master Resilience Trainers lead Air Force resilience curriculum and are assisted by Resilience Training Assistants. Lt Col Seehawer became an RTA in 2022 and an MRT in 2024. He is leveraging his training to develop a program tailored to the exact needs of his personnel. “Taking care of Airmen the right way is the most important thing we do,” said Chief Master Sgt. Simon Fancher, 521st AMOW command chief. “The structure, emphasis, empowerment and characteristics of this plan make it so unique from anywhere else. This is the most comprehensive program I’ve seen at the squadron, group or wing level.” It’s one thing to have the squadron’s plan on paper, but putting it into action requires the work of experienced personnel like Master Sgt. Justin Aguilar, the lead MRT for the squadron. “My passion for resilience stems from a simple truth,” Aguilar said. “What makes or breaks a unit is how we connect with one another.” The 725th AMS Resilience Plan extends beyond the core DAF curriculum. Squadron MRTs have been certified to teach parts of the Navy Warrior Toughness program, recently embedded with Air Force Deployed Transition Centers at Ramstein Air Base, and implemented BOUNCE, a teen-focused version of resilience training.

September 4, 2026 The team also leverages internal social media and the commander’s Key Support Liaison program to highlight personnel and ensure it isn’t only Airmen who feel connected. “I’m most proud of the Key Support Liaison program,” Seehawer said. “We have more dependents than military members here. Not every spouse wants to be involved in squadron activities, but we want them to at least know who to contact if they need help. We try to think of our KSLs like Ombudsmen, the Navy equivalent of the program.” Aguilar’s wife, Arianna PilladoAguilar, has been instrumental in the success of the program, offering continuity as the squadron restructured the KSL program to align with the resiliency plan. “People do not always recognize
the impact their actions can have on those around them,” PilladoAguilar said. “I like to believe that I have made a difference for the 725th. Maybe not in grand gestures, but ensuring that Airmen and families know they are seen, heard and never alone.” Her goal to support Airmen and families has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, she was recognized as the 521st AMOW’s KSL of the year for her efforts in revitalizing the program while her husband was recognized as Air Mobility Command’s Phoenix Warrior Sponsor of the Year. Their work directly impacted the squadron’s 2025 climate survey which saw an 11 perdent increase in morale and a 13 percent increase in unit cohesion — stats the unit hopes to continue to improve in 2026 and beyond. “We’re partnering with the
Navy Chaplain’s office to build safeTALK into our Foundations courses,” Seehawer said. “We’re using commercial apps to promote Mindfulness. We’re sending our Airmen to get civilian certifications in nutrition and sleep science to replicate the services provided in Guardian Resilience Teams.” Units have no shortage of resources available to forge stronger, more resilient teams. Often, it just requires one person taking initiative to put them into action. “Building a strong organiza tional foundation requires us to foster trust, create safe spaces for open dialogue and equip our team with the emotional intelligence needed to navigate high-tempo environments,” Aguilar said. “When we invest in our people this way, the warrior mindset follows naturally.”

ABC in KMC: Altweibersommer

Vogelwoog Kaiserslautern
Germany’s Indian summer Altweibersommer, often referred to as the German equivalent of “Indian Summer,” is a delightful meteorological phenomenon that occurs in early autumn, typically between late September and October. This period is characterized by a stretch of warm, sunny days that provide a final taste of summer before the onset of the cooler fall and winter months. The term “Altweibersommer” (literally old wives’ summer) has an interesting etymology. It is derived from the old German word “weiben,” which means “to weave” and refers to the fine, silvery threads of spider webs that are often seen floating in the air during this time, resembling the gray hair of elderly women. These threads are produced by young spiders, known as Baldachinspinnen, which use them to travel through the air. Equinox: Beginning of fall The autumn equinox this year occurs on Sep. 22 at 2.43 p.m. local time and marks the official start of fall, when day and night are approximately equal in length. It’s a time when the country begins to embrace the cooler weather and the changing colors of the leaves. Many people take advantage of the pleasant weather to go hiking, cycling or simply enjoying a leisurely walk through the painted forest of the Pfälzerwald. With Kaiserslautern being right in the heart of it, it’s time to don your hiking boots, but it is also a popular time for festivals and outdoor markets.
Chestnuts
Chestnuts galore Another not quite so well-known festival is the Keschdefeschd (Palatinate for Chestnut Festival) in Annweiler near Trifels Castle on Oct. 3 and 4. Local vendors will offer dishes and products from and with chestnuts, such as sweet and savory variations, chestnut cream, chestnut liqueur, chestnut honey, chestnut flatbread, chestnut mustard and chestnut bread. Wine and beer fests One seasonal highlight is the Deutsches Weinlesefest in Neustadt/Weinstrasse from Sep. 25–Oct. 11. Visitors can not only experience great wine and a carnival atmosphere, but the German Wine Queen is elected and crowned, topped off by a parade on Sunday, Oct. 11. The world-famous Oktoberfest in Munich starts on Sep. 19 and will run through Oct. 6. It is followed by the Cannstadter Wasen (near Stuttgart), which is smaller, but therefore somewhat more relaxed, taking place from Sep. 25 through Oct. 11. Wildpark Betzenberg The park is located in the eastern part of Kaiserslautern, behind Kleber Kaserne and across from Gasthaus Quack. It offers you the opportunity to see typical animals, home to the Pfälzerwald, and even some ancient species, such as wild horses. A stroll in autumn, in particular during “golden October,” as Germans say, when the leaves of the up to 120-year-old oaks and beeches turn golden brown, red and yellow, is especially spectacular. A Sunday walk is always worthwhile and even double the fun with binoculars and camera.

A season of color and celebration As the vibrant hues of summer give way to the rich, warm tones of autumn, Germany transforms into a picturesque landscape filled with cultural festivities and natural beauty. Fall in Germany is a time of celebration, reflection, and enjoyment of the great outdoors with colorful red, yellow and purplish forests. There is a multitude of activities to choose from!
Farmers Markets On Sep. 19 and 20, Speyer will turn into one large market. Regional specialties, traditional handcraft and artisan articles, and country life in the middle of the city. Over 70 vendors from the region will present their produce: fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese and sausage specialties. Lovingly crafted straw figures that shape the face of the market year after year and the sunflower – the symbol of the farmers’ market – guides the way through the market alleys full of colors, scents, and encounters. Use the opportunity and visit the historic cathedral, the Jewish mikveh or the Technik Museum while there. The annual Farmers’ Market in Schneckenhausen (near Otterberg) and alltime favorite in the local area, with over 70 stalls, will present a wide range of regional produce, jewelry and decorative items, honey and wines. It has become a highlight in the region’s calendar of events, and takes place Sep. 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ramstein will also offer a smaller farmers’ market on Oct. 4, with regional vendors and fresh produce from the local area. A French-German Biosphere Farmers’ Market will be held on Oct. 18 in Kirrweiler (near Neustadt/Weinstrasse). Guests have the chance to fill their shopping bags with goods, many of which come directly from the region. The range includes special cheese and sausages, fish and vegetables, liqueurs, as well as soaps, herbs, honey, jams, flowers, gift items, and wicker products.

Pumpkin exhibitions Another astonishing exhibition worth a visit is the annual pumpkin display at Gartenschau Kaiserslautern that started Sep. 1 and will run through Oct. 31. This year the exhibit is all about dinosaurs. Well-known species such as Diplodocus, Stegosaurus and Triceratops are part of the display with about 40,000 pumpkins in total. Different pumpkins are used to give the figures their color and range from white to classic orange decorative pumpkins to blue pumpkins. Ludwigsburg Castle (near Stuttgart) offers the world’s largest pumpkin exhibition until Oct. 31. This year’s theme, “LET’S PLAY,” celebrates fun, games, and imagination, including Super Mario and Barbie. Tsukimi and Yokai Festivals Just close by, the Japanese Garten will host a Tsukimi, or Moon Fest, Sep. 20 and 21 from 7 –10 p.m. The ponds and waterfall will be illuminated, and the garden will offer a diverse evening program. The Gartenimbiss will offer specials. The first official Yokai Festival will take place on Oct. 31, which is a small cozy community event that centers around Yokai, Japanese ghost and mystical creatures. There will also be a show program and hands-on activities, traditional Japanese market games, a ghost rally, photo spots and more. The best Yokai costume will be awarded followed by a parade through the garden. Oktoberkerwe The Messeplatz in Kaiserslautern invites visitors to its annual October Fair starting Oct. 16 with thrilling rides, live music, food and beverages and fireworks at the end of the fair on Oct. 26. Stores will be open for Sunday shopping on Oct. 18. Whether you’re enjoying a local festival, exploring the scenic landscape, or simply savoring seasonal foods like pumpkin soup, apple strudel or Federweisser, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during this magical time of year.

Building a combat care network for military working dogs Story & photo by Master Sgt. Carlin Leslie 406th Air Expeditionary Wing Through proactive training, Chabelley Airfield medical staff and the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa Veterinary team are providing critical backup care to service members to best support military working dog teams. This initiative directly supports the installation’s enduring priorities of defending the base and sustaining operations. To maximize crisis readiness, CLDJ medical staff took part in a comprehensive Tactical Combat Casualty Care training event at Chabelley Airfield, Djibouti, on July 24. “This training is essential for the joint force, empowering our medics to overcome the limitations of distance and time in emergency canine care,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jessica Martinez Santana, CJTF-HOA kennel master. “If a handler is incapacitated, this program ensures our Military Working Dogs still receive immediate, lifesaving care.” The transit time to a veterinary facility can mean the difference between life and death for our MWDs, making these frontline medical skills absolutely critical.” The training focused on treating critical field emergencies, venomous bites, heat-related injuries, and chest, limb, or eye trauma. Because CADJ operates without a permanently stationed, full-time veterinary team, these CJTF-HOA partners are training the base medical staff to step in as primary first responders for injured canines. “We want to make sure these dogs are cared for properly throughout all installations,” said U.S. Army Colonel Adam Wiechman, CJTF- HOA veterinarian. “When we train medical staff and service members in K-9 TCCC training led by our team, we enable non-veterinary personnel to assist the MWDs in medical emergencies. The unfortunate geography of the HOA area of responsibility means the vet teams may be up to four hours away.” The training utilized an advanced ‘Diesel’ K-9 training aid. This training aid is a highfidelity powered simulator that breathes, bleeds, and has realistic vital signs; it is exceptionally rare in deployed environments and provides medical staff with unparalleled, hands-on realism. The Diesel also has the added benefit of putting the handlers at
ease, knowing their K-9 companions have a team behind them when things go wrong. “Knowing this training is standardized brings us a profound sense of assurance,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Emily Boyd, Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa security forces military working dog handler. “It means there are more personnel on the ground equipped to save our dogs. If we go down, this program ensures our medics can immediately step in to provide lifesaving care.” Looking forward, Joint Medical Aid Station personnel plan to integrate these canine trauma scenarios into upcoming base-wide readiness exercises. This integration will allow medical personnel to practice their newly acquired skills in simulated, high-stress mass casualty conditions. Real-World Integration: A FourHour Triumph This training need stemmed from a recent training day when an MWD was injured and the team had to execute veterinary actions to render aid. The MWD suffered a dental injury during routine training that required a complex tooth extraction and ongoing construction at the base veterinary facility threatened to delay the procedure. To overcome the challenge, the CJTF-HOA veterinary team coordinated with CLDJ medical staff to use human clinical spaces. During the intensive four-hour surgery, medical staff worked hand-in-hand with the veterinary officer, while the canine's handler ensured the well-being and security of his partner. The damaged tooth was removed without complications, and the military working dog recovered fully, returning to duty without postoperative complications. “The medical personnel stepped up significantly, ready to be hands-on and helping in every way they possibly could,” Martinez said. “Because a tooth extraction is a common but delicate procedure, it served as an incredible, practical learning experience for both our veterinary and medical staff.” Through continued coordina tion with veterinary teams and base-wide planners, CLDJ and CADJ are establishing a highly skilled, adaptable network of K-9 TCCC first responders ready to defend and provide the best chance possible to those who defend the base.
Chabelley Airfield Joint Medical Aid Station medics and Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa Military Working Dog handlers receive a briefing by the CJTF-HOA veterinarian during the K-9 Tactical Combat Casualty Care training at Chabelley Airfield, Djibouti, July 24. The training focused on treating critical field emergencies, venomous bites, heat-related injuries, and chest, limb, or eye trauma.

86 AW builds mobility readiness during Agile Gateway, Sa Story & photos by Senior Airman Brenden Beezley 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing supported exercise Saber Junction 26 with joint air mobility operations alongside U.S. Army and Marine Corps forces Aug. 24-30. During the week, the wing executed distributed mission planning, patient movements, tactical airdrops and joint airborne operations, culminating in a maximumgeneration event and joint forcible entry that integrated Air Force C-130J Super Hercules and Marine Corps KC-130J Super Hercules crews with more than 600 173rd Airborne Brigade paratroopers. Saber Junction 26 is a U.S. Army Europe and Africa exercise that tests the 173rd Airborne Brigade’s ability to rapidly deploy, conduct joint forcible entry and operate alongside allied and partner forces during large-scale combat operations. Leading into the support of Saber Junction, the 86th AW conducted exercise Agile Gateway, which began with a 37th Airlift Squadron aircrew staging at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, where, with support from the 86th Communications Squadron, the crew received its next-day tasking and conducted mission planning from a distributed location. The following day, the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron responded to a simulated mass casualty event, transporting three simulated patients from Chièvres to Ramstein, where they were transferred to a 76th Airlift Squadron C-21A Learjet during an engine-running offload/onload for followon aeromedical evacuation. The transfer was one of three C-21A aeromedical evacuation training flights conducted throughout the week as the squadron exercised engine-running patient transfers, rapid alert response and simultaneous generation of its C-21A and C-37A Gulfstream fleets. “Agile Gateway and Saber Junction gave us an opportunity to test our agility and crisis-response capabilities in ways routine day-to-day missions can’t,” said Lt. Col. Kyle Gadoury, 76th AS assistant director of operations. “These exercises help ensure our squadron remains ready to support joint partners across Europe and Africa in hightempo or contested environments.” Following the patient transfer, the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron conducted simultaneous hot-pit refueling and enginerunning onload operations on the C-130J.
These Agile Combat Employment capabilities enabled the immediate transfer of patients and rapid onload and airdrop of sustainment cargo, setting the stage for the 173rd Airborne Brigade’s upcoming operations at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center’s Hohenfels Training Area. The training also demonstrated joint interoperability capabilities as 37th AS crews planned and operated alongside aircrews from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 234, working through differences in terminology, procedures and aircraft capabilities before mission execution. “This week showed how our different capabilities can connect and build on one another,” said Capt. Charles Khoshabjian, 37th AS weapons officer. “Working with the Marines reinforced the importance of identifying differences in terminology and procedures early so we can build shared understanding, integrate effectively and deliver combat power for the joint force.” The wing’s support for Saber Junction 26 came to a peak Aug. 26, when Air Force C-130Js and Marine Corps KC-130Js carried more than 600 paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade from Ramstein into the Joint Multinational Readiness Center’s Hohenfels Training Area, Germany, during a joint forcible entry. A 76th AS C-37A also supported the mission as an airborne communications node, relaying the launch command between the 173rd Airborne Brigade and 37th AS. The mission served as a maximum-generation event for the wing and brought together Air Force, Army and Marine Corps capabilities to strengthen interoperability and rehearse rapid force employment across the theater. “The joint forcible entry may be the culmination of our air mobility mission, but for the Army it marks the start of the larger operation,” Khoshabjian said. “What we deliver by air enables everything that follows on the ground.” The integration across airframes, mission sets and military services reflects the broader role the 86th AW provides to the joint force. “No single capability defines what the 86th Airlift Wing brings to the fight,” said Col. Matthew Wunderlich, 86th Operations Group commander. “By integrating our mobility capabilities with the joint force, we create the flexibility commanders need to respond across the theater. That integration is what turns individual capabilities into combat power.”

The winners were announced at the 2026 Defense Health Information Technology Symposium Aug. 10 in New Orleans. The U.S. Army Medical Department Mercury Awards recognize military and civilian personnel/teams who demonstrate outstanding excellence, innovation, and significant contributions in health information technology and informatics. The eligibility for the award is AMEDD military and civilian personnel that have served in HIT positions (including informatics) or made significant achievements in information management and informatics that support the advancement of Army Medicine’s readiness mission. The team led by Army Lt. Col. Justin Lilly, Chief Information Officer for Medical Readiness Command, Europe, earned top honors for their technical agility
and reputation as pioneers within Army Health Systems, proving their unmatched responsiveness during real-world surge operations. “Lt. Col. Lilly and his team exceeded all expectations over the last year. They enabled Medical Readiness Command, Europe to operate at a level we had never achieved before,” said U.S. Army Col. Jeremy Johnson, Chief of Staff for Medical Readiness Command, Europe. The Medical Readiness Command, Europe team included Army Lt. Col. Justin Lilly, Chief Information Officer for Medical Readiness Command, Europe; Bryan Gilbrech, Deputy Chief Information Officer, Craig McDowell, Justin Michaels and Lazaro Smith. “I am extremely proud of this team for their hard work and dedication that allowed us to support medical readiness, training exercises and real-world events,” said Lilly. “In Europe, medical readiness hinges on secure, rapid information. This recognition is a testament to the team’s dedication. It has been a pleasure to work with a dedicated and hard-working team.” According to senior Army medical officials, the Medical Readiness Command, Europe G6 team operated as a vital node in a joint, multi-
national environment, ensuring that technology served as a force multiplier for clinical and logistical teams. “By completely revamping our unit’s ability to communicate with secure technologies, Lt. Col. Lilly and his team significantly bolstered our unit’s combat readiness during several U.S. Army Europe and Africa exercises,” added Johnson. “This preparation enabled our headquarters to function at the highest level during the real-world crisis response of Operation Epic Fury. Lt. Col. Lilly and his team’s combination of pioneering innovation and tireless responsiveness during Operation Epic Fury makes them truly deserving of this award.” As a result of the team’s forward thinking and abilities, Medical Readiness Command, Europe was the first Medical Readiness Command in US Army Medical Command to utilize SecureView computer systems – allowing for concurrent Mission Partner Environment (MPE) network and SIPR capabilities. “Our team shared the knowledge we gained from the implementation of SecureView with MEDCOM and three other MRCs to help drive enterprise-wide modernization,” added Lilly.

Army NCO throws Team USA curveball, serves with pride by Richard Rzepka U.S. Army NATO For most, stepping onto the diamond representing the 2026 USA Future’s Women’s Softball Team would be the pinnacle of pressure. But for Sgt. Gabriella Nowack, a paralegal specialist with six and a half years of service in the U.S. Army, high-stakes environments are standard issue. Assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army NATO Brigade in Sembach, Nowack helped lead the Future’s team to a flawless 6-0 record against elite international competition in a premier international softball event, Border Battle XVI. The defining moment of the tournament was a historic upset. For the first time in the event’s history, the Future’s team took down the USA Women’s National Team and Nowak was clutch. “The energy was indescribable,” Nowack recalled of the dugout atmosphere during the monumental win. “The entire team seemed to be in sync whether the players were on the field or cheering from the sidelines. To me, the win has only strengthened the mantra I uphold that softball is anybody’s game … by that I mean you can have everything set against you, but that doesn’t mean you have to settle for what’s expected.” The road to the 6-0 sweep, which included victories over the Canadian National Team and top state rosters from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, was grueling. Nowack made appearances in five of the six games, a demanding stretch compounded by a recent move from Camp Humphreys, Korea. Arriving in Germany just this past May, Nowack entered the tournament with limited practice under her belt for the year. “It was a bit difficult for me mentally,” she admitted. “I

really tried to focus on trusting my training and skills developed over the many years I’ve played this sport.” That deep well of training was forged through a highly decorated run in military athletics. Nowack earned her spot on the Future's roster following standout performances on the 2025 All-Army and All-Forces Women’s Softball Teams. She was subsequently named a 1st Team All-American after her showing at the 2025 Women’s Open Nationals. Yet, for Nowack, the most intense pressure didn't come from the international stage, but from the selection process itself. “Honestly, the most grueling part of the road to the USA Future’s team was the selection process for

the All-Army team,” she said. The monthlong camp features two rounds of cuts, demanding absolute perfection to secure a spot. By the time she reached the Future’s team with a guaranteed roster position, her mindset had shifted to pure execution. Nowack’s foundation in the sport was built long before she put on an Army uniform. Growing up in San Jose, California, she began playing at four years old and pitched through her senior season at Hawaii Pacific University in 2018. The driving force behind her early dedication was her father. He was a constant presence at practice and games, always ready to push her from the stands or the dugout.
“I was a pitcher, so anytime I started to let up on the mound, I would hear him telling me to ‘Rock and fire, kid,’” Nowack shared. “That was pretty much his way to get me to lock in and win every at-bat.” Her father passed away when she was just 17, but his words remain her permanent anchor in her drive to excel. Today, the phrase “Rock and fire kid” is tattooed on her throwing arm — a constant reminder of the man who pushed her hardest. Six months after graduating from HPU, inspired by the active-duty lifestyles of her college friends, Nowack raised her right hand and enlisted. Today, the values she honed over 25 years on the diamond seamlessly translate to her role as a NCO in the Army. “My time as an NCO has made me better at pouring my energy into others,” Nowack said. “It doesn’t matter if I’m personally having a good or bad day on the field, I will do my best to exert positive energy and feedback to my teammates and coaches, while actively avoiding being an ‘energy vampire.’” As a Soldier-athlete, she carries the weight of representing the Army on a global stage, striving to play the game with “honor, respect, and integrity.” Yet, despite her soaring athletic resume, Nowack remains grounded in her military mission. Currently on a three-year tour in Germany, her primary focus is career progression. While she plans to continue playing locally in Europe, she views the sport primarily as a vital mental health outlet, a refuge she rediscovered in 2022 after being “voluntold” to play for a JAG team at Fort Hood, Texas. As she looks to the future, her message to the junior generation of Soldiers is simple but profound: “My hope as more junior Soldiers and officers join the ranks is that they find their outlet too, whether it’s softball or not.”
Sgt. Gabriella Nowack, 1st Team All American, credits her father with inspiring her dedication and drive.

LIGURIA from Page 1 overlooked with all there is to see in Italy, but it is quite the gem. Only a seven-hour drive from the Stuttgart area made this an appealing destination for a weekend trip. We stayed in a beautiful town on the water called Diano Marina, near Imperia and Sanremo. Because of its close proximity to the French border, we also ventured to Monaco and Cannes in France. My son is a movie buff and hopeful screenwriter, so it was a priceless and unforgettable moment for him to walk near the infamous red carpet. Diano Marina Diano Marina is an older seaside town with different types of accommodations, from hotels to more rustic agriturismi. An agriturismo can offer a more authentic, familyrun experience and is a wonderful option if you want to see a quieter side of Italy. We stayed in the restored Hotel Gabriella, a familyrun hotel that dates back to 1957 and remains right on the beach. Our B&B included a great breakfast buffet every morning that was substantial enough to push back lunch. This part of Liguria is close to Genova (Genoa), which is known for its pesto Genovese. You will have your choice of pizzas and pastas made with this delicious concoction that most Americans adore. But don’t limit yourself to pesto: Ligurian cuisine also makes wonderful use of fresh seafood, local olive oil and seasonal vegetables. Stroll the Seaside Promenade Every night we strolled the streets of the Comune of Diano Marina
where we picked out our dinner restaurant. The streets are lined with orange and lemon trees, making it quite fragrant and beautiful to meander. Diano Marina has a picturesque seaside promenade along the beach with palm trees and little eateries, with smells that draw you in at every turn. Don’t forget the Italian gelato, in which my daughter was in heaven. With a daily scoop of some new flavor, one might have to stay a year to discover them all. Bike Along the Riviera dei Fiori One of the things I love most about Diano Marina is that there is no pressure to fill every hour. Spend a morning on the sandy beach, wander through town, then stop for an espresso or gelato before dinner. For something a little more active, the newly completed Riviera dei Fiori cycling and pedestrian path now connects Diano Marina with a 45-kilometer route stretching from Ospedaletti to Andora, much of it following the old railway line beside the sea. It’s a beautiful way to experience the coastline without the traffic. Discover local history and hilltop villages If you want a little history, the MARM Civic Museum in Palazzo del Parco is another worthwhile stop. Its archaeological collection explores the history of the area from prehistory through Roman times, including artifacts connected to the ancient settlement of Lucus Bormani and a Roman shipwreck discovered in the Gulf of Diano. And don’t miss the villages just beyond the coast. Diano Castello, perched among olive groves a short distance inland, offers medieval

streets, historic churches and beautiful views back toward the sea. The nearby village of Cervo is another lovely excursion, especially for wandering its narrow lanes and enjoying the views over the Mediterranean.
View from Jardin Exotique, Monaco.
Monaco I was an ’80s teen and enamored with European royalty. It was only natural for me to think of Princess Grace in a convertible with a flowing scarf driving through Monaco. It’s no wonder she fell in love with this town. Driving the twisty, curvy road leading up the hill to the Jardin Exotique Gardens and the medieval village was totally worth it. The enchanted garden, shops and views of France’s southern Riviera were unbelievable from this particular peak. Monaco was definitely a “must-see” again. If you are planning a trip now, the Jardin Exotique is once again open to visitors after a six-year renovation. It reopened to the public in March 2026, with its dramatic collection of succulents and panoramic views over Monaco and the Mediterranean. Cannes, France Cannes, France, is exactly what you might think of: beautiful buildings, beautiful people and glamorous living. A little bit like a tropical Beverly Hills, this gorgeous town was lined with all different high-end stores to window-shop, at least for me. The Cannes Film Festival remains one of the world’s great cinematic events. When we visited in May, the city was preparing to host the festival and lots of famous people would soon occupy this breathtaking city. Today, the festival continues to take place each May. For a movie-loving family, Cannes is especially fun even if you don’t have festival credentials. Walking along the Croisette, seeing the Palais des Festivals and taking a photo by the famous red-carpet steps gives you a little taste of the glamour without needing to be a celebrity. Useful Travel Tips Passport: It is always important to have your passport while traveling in Europe, particularly when your itinerary crosses borders. Italy, France and Monaco are all part of the Schengen Area, but you should still carry your passport or appropriate travel document. Tolls: If you have traveled in Italy or France already, you know tolls are part of the experience. Costs and routes can change, so it’s worth checking your current route before leaving. Gas: Coming from Stuttgart, the last Esso we found was in Singen. This may be a little off the beaten path, but this will be the last stop

before Switzerland. Swiss francs are used in Switzerland, although cards are widely accepted. If you plan to stop for gas, it’s still smart to have a backup payment option. You’ll be in Switzerland for roughly two hours on this route, depending on traffic and stops. Driving: Give yourself plenty of time for the final stretch into Liguria. The roads can be narrow and winding, particularly once you leave the main highways. The views, however, are part of the reward. Diano Marina may not have the name recognition of Portofino, Monaco or Cannes, and that’s exactly what makes it appealing. It offers the slower, simpler side of the Riviera: long walks by the
water, leisurely meals, tiny villages, gelato after dinner and the feeling that you have discovered somewhere that everyone else forgot to tell you about. By car Italy’s Liguria region is approximately 7 hours south of Stuttgart, 8 hours and 20 minutes south of Kaiserslautern and 8 hours and 30 minutes south of Wiesbaden. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information. Arrivederci! Author’s Profile: Wendy Payne is a military spouse and lives with her family in Stuttgart, Germany.
