CSAF, CMSAF highlight forward readiness, deterrence during visit to Spangdahlem Air Base

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach, left, and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David Wolfe address Airmen during an all call at Spangdahlem Air Base, Aug. 27. During their visit Wilsbach and Wolfe addressed the vital importance of readiness, modernization and support to Airmen and families. Photo by Airman 1st Class Gianna Cucci

by 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David R. Wolfe visited Spangdahlem Air Base Aug. 27, where they met with Airmen, recognized outstanding performers and received updates on how the 52nd Fighter Wing is sustaining operations across the European theater. The visit included meetings with wing leaders, a mission brief and an all-call with Airmen from operations, maintenance and mission support organizations across the installation. Wilsbach and Wolfe also recognized one Bronze Star recipient and four Distinguished Flying Cross recipients, highlighting the professionalism and service reflected across the wing. They also visited units and workspaces, where Airmen described how their teams are balancing day-to-day fighter operations with short-notice taskings and evolving mission demands.

Throughout the visit, senior leaders saw how the wing’s mission extends beyond sortie generation alone. Airmen from across the base showcased the coordination required to sustain deployments, support theater operations and remain prepared to respond under compressed timelines. “Readiness is fundamental,” Wilsbach said. “When our Airmen have the tools and training to execute, our aircraft fly and our missions succeed.” That effort spans far beyond the flight line. Maintainers, defenders, communicators, logisticians, medics, engineers and force support Airmen showcased how their expertise contributes to the wing’s ability to generate and sustain airpower on demand. The visit also highlighted Spangdahlem’s role beyond fighter operations. Representatives from the 726th Air Mobility Squadron, an Air Mobility Command tenant unit on base, joined Airmen from across the wing to demonstrate

the coordination and capabilities required to sustain high-speed mobility operations as theater demands shift. Airmen across the wing are often required to work through shifting plans and complex coordination challenges on tight real-world deadlines. For senior leaders, those demands reinforced that readiness depends not only on aircraft and aircrews, but on the broader team that enables the mission. “Every Airman, no matter their specialty, contributes to the mission,” Wilsbach said. “Each of you plays a part in our ability to generate airpower in every corner of the world.” For Wilsbach and Wolfe, the visit also underscored the importance of standards, trust and accountability in formations expected to move quickly and perform during real-world demands. During engagements with installation first sergeants and Airman Leadership School instructors, he emphasized the role of discipline

in sustaining mission success and the significance behind readiness for warfighters. “Why are we so laser focused [on Physical Fitness] ... more than we have in my entire career and your entire career. Why is that happening?” Wolfe said. “The tie between your physical health and every other marker in your life is strong. It’s an indicator in how you’re going to be doing in all facets of your life.” Wolfe stressed that one’s mental health is directly tied to how well Airmen are taking care of their bodies. He said for example, recent data strongly suggests that Airmen with high PT scores perform better on deployments. The visit also reflected the broader reach of the wing’s mission beyond Spangdahlem itself. Airmen assigned to geographically separated units across the region contribute to the 52nd Fighter Wing’s ability to support Allied and partner operations across Europe. The day before arriving at

Spangdahlem, Wilsbach and Wolfe visited the wing’s Detachment 1 at Lask Air Base, Poland, where they met with Airmen supporting Allied integration efforts. U.S. Air Force Col. William Lutmer, 52nd Fighter Wing commander, said the visit gave Airmen an opportunity to demonstrate how the wing turns daily preparation into on-demand operational capability. “Spangdahlem Airmen generate combat power through professionalism, adaptability and teamwork,” Lutmer said. “Saber Sharp means staying ready to move fast, respond decisively and be first to the fight when the mission calls.” For more information about the 52nd Fighter Wing and its mission, visit www.spangdahlem.af.mil. U.S. Army Service members and personnel of the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization participate in the 21st Theater Sustainment Command 2026 Army Sustainment Tabletop Exercise held on Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 1. Participants discussed simulated challenges and developed coordinated approaches to improve collective preparedness and response capabilities.

NATO allies strengthen sustainment cooperation during multinational tabletop exercise Story & photos by Pfc. Kaiden Silversmith 21st Theater Sustainment Command U.S. Army Soldiers, NATO members and multinational partners came together for a tabletop exercise on Ramstein Air Base, to discuss sustainment challenges and strengthen coordination across the alliance. The exercise brought together military leaders, planners, subject-matter experts and supporting personnel from the United States and participating NATO nations to rehearse command-andcontrol processes in a simulated operational environment. Unlike a field exercise, the tabletop format emphasized decision-making rather than physical maneuver. Participants worked through a series of evolving scenarios that required headquarters and national representatives to assess information, coordinate responses and make decisions within a multinational framework. The multinational tabletop exercise also allowed participants to examine how NATO forces can improve the movement of personnel, equipment and supplies throughout Europe while identifying challenges that could affect large-scale operations. For Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Ingram, brigade command sergeant major for the 16th Sustainment Brigade,

one of the most important outcomes of the exercise was building relationships among NATO partners. “Relationship building is knowing each other’s capabilities across all the host nations and then building those networks and those relationships,” Ingram said. “I think that is a key takeaway.” The conversations revealed that the challenge was not simply moving equipment across Europe. Participants also discussed the relationships, infrastructure and coordination needed to make multinational sustainment work. “We’re all pretty much aligned,” Ingram said. “However, I’ve noticed there are some gaps, and I think that’s why this is so important, figuring out those gaps and what we can do to put capabilities to those gaps.” Capt. Cody Gunther, an exercise planner with the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, explained that bringing representatives from different nations together helps create connections that can support future operations. “Sometimes the delay between figuring out what your problem is and finding the answer is just knowing who to talk to,” Gunther said. “Making those connections is really the most important thing that we’re going to do here and carry forward with the people who have attended.”

U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Michael Lalor, (right) commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, and Command Sgt. Maj. Denice Malave, the senior enlisted advisor for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, attend the 21st TSC 2026 Army Sustainment Tabletop Exercise held on Ramstein Air Base, on Sept. 16. The tabletop exercise focused on improving coordination, communication and collective readiness among participating organizations.

Infrastructure investment was another major topic discussed during the exercise. Gunther emphasized that effective sustainment operations depend on long-term investments in transportation networks, logistics bases and storage facilities. “None of the things that we do from a theater level can happen without long-term planning,” Gunther said. “This stuff isn’t going to happen in the next six months. This is five, 10, 15 years down the road.” Lt. Col. Patrick Van Wijnbergen, a NATO representative from the Dutch Army serving as branch head for movement and transportation, also highlighted the importance of reliable infrastructure and coordinated logistics. “If our infrastructure is not great and we have

delays, the adversary knows we are not on time,” Van Wijnbergen said. “So investing in infrastructure is quite important.” Van Wijnbergen said increased coordination among NATO nations could help improve the alliance’s overall logistics and distribution capabilities. He emphasized the importance of shared systems, multinational logistics and training that reflects how NATO forces would operate during a real-world conflict. “If we keep fighting as separate countries within NATO’s structure, it won’t work,” Van Wijnbergen said. “[Those] in front will fight hard, but if we cannot sustain them or move them, we’ve got a problem.” Although Van Wijnbergen and Gunther represent different armies, both emphasized the same

challenges: No single nation can effectively operate alone during a large-scale conflict in Europe. Their shared perspectives highlighted the importance of building relationships, improving coordination and understanding each nation’s capabilities before those partnerships are needed in real world operation. “The U.S. is not going to fight a conflict in Europe by itself,” Gunther said. “We have to learn how to operate with our partner forces.” For those involved, the exercise was also an opportunity to leave with something more practical than a completed scenario; new professional relationships and a better understanding of the people and capabilities they may one day need to work alongside.

ABC in KMC: Oktoberfest by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Wies’n Oktoberfest is here! The world’s largest beer festival is currently taking place in the center of Munich for the 190th time this year. The festival takes place from Sep. 19 to Oct. 4 at Theresienwiese, lovingly called “Wies’n” by locals. Don’t miss the chance to experience this iconic festival that draws millions of visitors from around the globe. While the annual festival enjoys worldwide recognition, it is possible that many are unfamiliar with its history and how it has evolved into the celebrated event we know today. And, you may wonder why it is called Oktoberfest when it starts in September. Origins The festival originates from Munich with the marriage of Ludwig I, the future king of Bavaria, and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, Oct. 12, 1810, where celebrations lasted five days. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the royal wedding, participate in festivities, and watch horse races. Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria came from the House of Wittelsbach, was born in Strasbourg, Alsace, but was also the Duke of Zweibrücken, under Bavarian rule at the time. He loved horses and was very

proud of the “Zweibrücker” breed. According to the city of Munich’s website the celebration was so popular it was brought back the following year and included an agriculture fair. Many new additions were made in following years including horse races and food and drink vendors. These vendors eventually moved to beer halls in the 20th century. Today, Oktoberfest celebrations throughout the world pay homage to the Oktoberfest in Munich. The festival is traditionally a 17 to 18-day celebration, ending on the first Sunday in October. Since 1950, the mayor of Munich has kicked-off the festival by tapping a keg. What might be a surprising fact for visitors is that the large tents are completely newly constructed with fresh timber every year and the building starts in July. Planning Visitors planning to attend Oktoberfest celebrations — locally or across the country — should ensure they have a plan for transportation if drinking alcohol. Visitors are encouraged to use resources available like local cab companies, local tour operators, public transportation, a designated driver, and their immediate supervisor. Oktoberfest in recent years has yielded 6.7 million visitors, including Germans and other tourists, and roughly two million gallons of beer.

Fun facts: The festival has taken place in Munich most years since 1810, only being cancelled in the face of wars, cholera or COVID outbreaks. It is forbidden to drink any beer other than Munich-brewed beer at Oktoberfest. The beer must have been brewed in the city walls and come from one of six special historic breweries. This is designated “Oktoberfestbier” — and all of the breweries are very proud to be making it! Oktoberfestbier is stronger than normal beer, at around 6 percent. The variety is called Märzen as it is brewed in March and allowed to age so that it is ready to drink by late sumer. Though Oktoberfest is world-famous, it is still predominantly attended by Bavarians. 72 percent of the guests are from Bavaria itself. The largest group of foreigners is Australians, followed by Americans. Albert Einstein actually worked at Oktoberfest when he was young, putting up beer tents. More than 6 million people attend Oktoberfest, and the largest tent seats 11,000 people — and that’s just one of the 13 that make up the festival. Oktoberfest starts with a gun salute on the first Saturday at 12 p.m., followed by the mayor of Munich tapping the first beer keg, with the cry “O’zapft is’!” This literally means “it is tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect. There is also a very spectacular parade

with heavy brewery horses leading to the fairgrounds on Saturday. The “oompah” bands at Oktoberfest are famous for their unusual regional brass instruments, including the Alpenhorn, which was traditionally used as a way to calm down anxious cows around milking times in the Swiss Alps. The most popular things to eat at Oktoberfest are grilled chicken (“Hendl”), pork knuckles (“Schweinshaxe”), and oxen (“Ochse”). The number of chicken eaten far outweighs the number of sausages and about 500,000 chicken were consumed in 2025. Oktoberfest is famous for its fairground. It got its first roller coaster in 1908 – the first ever roller coaster in Germany. The amount of beer drunk at Oktoberfest, about 7 million liters in 2025, could fill more than three Olympic-sized swimming pools. Servers at Oktoberfest are able to carry 10 Mass (liter glasses of beer) plus the additional weight of the beer itself. Pretty impressive! In addition, they are required to buy themselves in upfront with a special ticket system. There is a “lost & found” for children! Other items found in previous years were wallets, purses, keys, train tickets, canes, underwear and even wigs and dentures! For more information about Oktoberfest, visit https://www.oktoberfest.de

25 years later: US, German community climbs together to never forget Story & photo by Tech. Sgt. Alexandra M. Longfellow U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Public Affairs Twenty-five years after first responders climbed the stairwells of the World Trade Center towers, hundreds of U.S. service members, German first responders and community members took steps of their own to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten. Approximately 400 participants gathered at Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern for the fourth annual September 11th Memorial Stair Climb, climbing 68 stadium stairs 30 times — 2,071 individual steps equivalent to the 110 flights of the World Trade Center towers. The climb brought together U.S. Air Force and Army service members, members of the German Bundeswehr, American and German firefighters and emergency medical personnel, Rheinland-Pfalz police officers and German high school students to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. For U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Trevor J. Derr, 37th Aircraft Maintenance Unit superintendent, the event began with a much smaller climb four years ago. New to Ramstein Air Base, Germany, in 2022 and unfamiliar with local commemorative events, Derr and his daughter decided to walk and ruck 9.11 miles around the installation. During their route, they passed a man who realized the significance of the date. “Oh yeah … I forgot that’s today,” Derr recalled him saying. The words stuck with him. “With tears in my eyes, I looked at my daughter and told her, ‘This is why we do this,’” Derr said. Determined to create something that would keep the memory of September 11th alive within the Kaiserslautern Military Community, Derr approached 1. FC Kaiserslautern with the idea of hosting a memorial stair climb at Fritz-Walter-Stadion. The club agreed. Four years later, what began with a father and daughter walking around Ramstein has grown into an event drawing hundreds of participants from the U.S. military and surrounding German communities. For Derr, the growth carries particular significance this year. He was in his final week of Basic Military Training when the attacks occurred. Now, 25 years later, many of the youngest Airmen climbing beside him were not yet born on Sept. 11, 2001.

U.S. Air Force and German firefighters climb the steps of Fritz-Walter-Stadion during the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Kaiserslautern, Sept. 11. Wearing firefighting gear, participants completed 30 loops totaling 2,071 steps — the equivalent of 110 flights of the World Trade Center towers. The climb honors the first responders who ascended the towers on Sept. 11, 2001, including the 343 New York City firefighters who lost their lives that day.

“Many young first responders [and] military members entering the ranks today have no personal memory of 2001,” Derr said. “If we do not pass down the firsthand accounts, the lessons learned and the emotional reality of that day, the legacy risks becoming an abstract date.” Each participant carried a physical reminder of that legacy up the stadium stairs. In the years leading up to the event, organizers collected patches from fire departments, rescue squads and police agencies across Europe, North America and as far away as Australia. Before beginning the climb, each participant received a patch and lanyard to carry with them. Derr said the patches become particularly meaningful as fatigue sets in. “When our climbers hit that mental and physical wall, I tell them to pause, look down at the patch in their hands, and hold the lanyard around their necks,” he said. The temporary discomfort of climbing stadium stairs, Derr said, offers only a glimpse of the physical burden first responders faced as they moved upward through the World Trade Center towers. “What we go through while climbing the stairs doesn’t compare to what they went through,” Derr said. But the climb is about more than recreating the physical distance. Thousands of miles from New York City, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, Americans and Germans climbed together, transforming an American

day of remembrance into a shared act of commemoration. Fritz-Walter-Stadion provided the infrastructure needed to accommodate the full climb and hundreds of participants, but Derr said 1. FC Kaiserslautern’s involvement has gone far beyond providing a venue. Since the event’s inception, the club and local German leaders have supported fundraising efforts and helped the event grow, while German firefighters, police officers, military members and students have joined their American counterparts on the stairs. For some participants, the climb also reflected the deep ties between the German and American communities that have called the Kaiserslautern area home for generations. Polizeikommissar Kai Fauss participated in the stair climb for the first time this year. With an American mother and German roots, Fauss said the event carried a personal significance while also representing the close relationship between the two communities. “Having an American mother, I’ve always felt a personal connection to both Germany and the United States,” Fauss said. “Seeing German and Americans come together to remember those who lost their lives shows the friendship we have here. We live and work alongside each other every day, and events like this remind us that we also stand together when it matters most.” For Derr, seeing the two communities climb together is part of what makes the event meaningful. “A portion of today’s partici-

pants, both American Airmen and German students, were either infants or not yet born when the attacks occurred,” he said. “Watching German police officers, American Airmen, local firefighters and German teenagers climb these steps shoulder-to-shoulder bridges every generation and nationality.” The significance begins before participants take their first step. During the opening ceremony, the German and American national anthems echo through the stadium. “Amazing Grace” plays on bagpipes as the stadium’s video screens display portraits of the 343 New York City firefighters who died on Sept. 11. Derr said looking across the stadium and seeing American Airmen and Soldiers stand-

ing beside German firefighters, police officers and students is the moment that affects him most each year. “Watching two nations unite thousands of miles from Ground Zero to honor the fallen, my emotions take over,” Derr said. “I cry every single year.” Then the climbing begins. Thirty loops. Two thousand seventy-one steps. One hundred ten flights. As participants tire, strangers who have already finished cheer for those still climbing. Derr said the most difficult stretch comes between approximately the 18th and 23rd loops, when legs grow heavy and fatigue begins to take over. That is when perspective matters. “You realize the inside the World Trade Center towers, the men and women climbing were facing unimaginable heat and structural collapse, yet they pressed on to save lives,” Derr said. “That thought instantly breaks through the pain.” Twenty-five years after Sept. 11, Derr knows fewer people will have firsthand memories of where they were when the attacks happened. Eventually, remembrance will depend entirely on generations who know the day only through the stories passed down to them. That, he said, makes actively remembering even more important. “‘Never Forget’ cannot remain a passive slogan,” Derr said. “It has to be an active, living commitment.” At Fritz-Walter-Stadion, that commitment is measured one step at a time.

Army dentist selected for All-Army Golf Team trials by Kirk Frady Medical Readiness Command, Europe U.S. Army Capt. Brandon Mai, a general dentist assigned to the U.S. Army Dental Clinic in Stuttgart, has been selected to attend the All-Army Golf Trial Camp Sept. 7-14 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Mai is one of 12 golfers selected for the competitive camp, which identifies the Army’s top players for national-level competition. Six participants will be selected to represent the Army at the Armed Forces Golf Championship, scheduled for Sept. 15-19 at West Point, where they will compete against golfers from the other military services. Golf has been a significant part of Mai’s life since childhood. “My father picked up the game from a coworker and started tak-

ing me and my siblings to hit balls at Stadium Golf Center in San Diego at age 6,” Mai said. “My mom got us started in tournaments shortly thereafter. Competitive golf taught me grit, discipline and to always strive for greatness.” Mai grew up in Poway, California, and attended Rancho Bernardo High School. He later played two years of NCAA Division I golf at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Competitive golf was my passion and focus throughout childhood, high school and into college,” Mai said. “I’ve traveled all over the states and internationally to compete in amateur golf tournaments growing up. This will be my first time trying out for an Army team.” Although Mai has an extensive competitive background, he said he stepped away from the sport for

more than a year before returning to the course earlier this summer. “I didn’t play or practice any golf for over a year until earlier this summer, when a couple of the noncommissioned officers at my clinic got hooked on the game,” Mai said. “Since then, I’ve been able to practice every other weekend or so this summer.” Mai encourages others to consider golf as either a competitive sport or lifelong hobby, citing both its personal and professional benefits. “Golf is one of the few sports you can enjoy your entire life, and it teaches skills that carry over well to military service and life,” Mai said. “In this game, there’s a fine line between critical thinking and overthinking. You first need to learn the etiquette of golf, be patient, play well with others and have fun with it.”

Tick prevention begins before stepping outdoors

“Do not let the threat of ticks slow you down or keep you inside. Physical fitness, mental resilience, and family bonding are built outdoors.”

– U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Timothy Davis, medical entomology consultant and theater preventive medicine flight commander

Build layers of protection The most effective way to prevent tickborne illness is to reduce the chance of being bitten. Davis shared personal protective measures outlined in Armed Forces Pest Management Board Technical Guide 36, identifying this resource as a primary reference used by public health and preventive medicine personnel to train Airmen and Guardians on personal protection before field exercises and deployments. Post-outdoor tick check Davis emphasized that tick prevention does not end when outdoor activity is over. After spending time outdoors, check your entire body for ticks. Pay particular attention to areas such as behind the knees, under the arms, around the waist, behind the ears and along the scalp. Showering soon after outdoor activity can also help remove unattached ticks. Despite the risk of tick exposure, Davis said these proactive measures can contribute to increased safety when outdoors. “Do not let the threat of ticks slow you down or keep you inside,” he said. “Physical fitness, mental resilience, and family bonding are built outdoors. By taking a few proactive minutes to apply repellent and treat your gear, you can safely enjoy the outdoors, stay

For Airmen and Guardians, readiness means protecting their health wherever their day takes them, including on wooded trails, grassy training areas, field exercises and during time outdoors with family. Ticks are typically small in size, but some may transmit diseases that can significantly impact military readiness. These parasitic arachnids are most active as the season warms into spring and summer months, though service members must remain alert to tick exposure, which can occur year-round. The Department of War closely monitors tick-borne diseases since symptoms can quickly compromise an Airmen or Guardian’s physical readiness, resulting in lost duty days and potential long-term health complications. “Practicing personal protective measures against ticks is a direct action to preserve force health, maintain operational strength and ensure mission readiness,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Timothy Davis, medical entomology consultant and theater preventive medicine flight commander at Kadena Air Base, Japan. While Lyme disease is one of the most recognized tick-borne illnesses in the United States, the Department of War and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also monitor cases for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis and babesiosis. Know about alpha-gal syndrome Lone star tick bites can also trigger alphagal syndrome, an allergic condition that can have lasting implications for those affected. Unlike Lyme disease, which is caused by bacteria, AGS involves an immune response to alpha-gal, a sugar molecule found in most mammals. AGS reactions can be delayed for several hours after consuming mammalian meat and byproducts or other goods containing alpha-gal. Symptoms can range from hives and gastrointestinal problems to more serious allergic reactions. For service members, the condition can present unique challenges to nutrition and field operations. Davis noted that an AGS

diagnosis may require careful planning around military meals and other deployment considerations.

fit, remain healthy, and be ready to win when the nation calls!” Got a tick bite? If an attached tick is found, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. Service members should also pay attention to changes in their health following potential exposure. Early symptoms associated with tickborne illnesses can include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle or joint aches and a rash. Davis said that the rash does not always appear in the classic “bull's-eye” pattern and may instead appear as a solid pink-to-red patch. If symptoms develop after spending time

Steps to prevent tick bites

Guidance

Treat clothing and gear with permethrin.

Permethrin-treated clothing and gear provide a protective barrier against ticks and other insects. Use products formulated for clothing and emphasizes that permethrin should not be applied directly to skin.

Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent to exposed skin.

Repellents containing active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol, and 2-undecanone. Repellent should be applied according to the product's directions. Find the repellent for your needs.

Dress for protection.

Wear long sleeves and pants when practical. In field environments, keeping clothing properly secured, including tucking pant legs into socks or boots, which can help prevent ticks from reaching exposed skin. Light-colored clothing can also make ticks easier to identify.

Consider your surroundings.

When possible, avoid tall grass, dense brush and other areas where ticks are likely to be present. During field operations, unit leaders can also consider vector threats when selecting areas for patrol bases, bivouac areas and command posts.

in an area where ticks are present, seek medical evaluation and tell your healthcare provider about the potential exposure. Davis recommended informing providers about recent field training, land navigation or time spent in wooded or grassy areas because that information can help inform the evaluation. The Defense Health Agency offers free tick testing and pathogen identification, through milTICK, to Department of War personnel and dependents based in the United States. The CAC-enabled dashboard also monitors cases of various tickborne illnesses across statewide installations. Visit the DHA tick webpage for more information.

Medical Readiness Command, Europe hosts Army Family Forum Story & photo by Kirk Frady Medical Readiness Command, Europe Medical Readiness Command, Europe leadership hosted an Army Family Forum dedicated to Soldier and Family Quality of Life Sept. 14 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Patricia (Patty) Centeno, Chief of Family Programs for U.S. Army Medical Command was the lead facilitator and guest speaker for the event. Taking part in the forum were senior Army medical leaders, Soldiers, spouses and family members from across the Medical Readiness Command, Europe footprint. As the Chief of Family Programs for U.S. Army Medical Command, Centeno plays a key role in supporting and enhancing the readiness and resilience of Army families and caregivers. She also leads the U.S. Army Family Team Building and Army Family Action Plan initiatives that support military families, particularly spouses, through education, resilience training, and community engagement. “Readiness and building cohesive teams are among top priorities for the Army,” said Centeno. “This event ties that direct line between family readiness and operational readiness. When our Army Families at all COMPOS — Active, Guard, and Reserve — have the right resources in front of them, they know where to go and who to go to, and they become more resilient.” According to senior military officials, military spouses play a critical role in both readiness and resilience by serving as the backbone of the home front, enabling service members to focus on their missions while maintaining the stability and well-being of their families. “The strength and resilience of our Army spouses are indispensable to mission success, anchoring the home front with enduring commitment amidst the unique demands of military service,” added Centeno. “As proactive advocates for their communities, spouses offer an authentic and influential voice on critical quality-of-life priorities, from healthcare and housing to childcare and spouse employment.”

Medical Readiness Command, Europe leadership hosted an Army Family Forum dedicated to Soldier and Family Quality of Life Sept.

Among the military community, it is commonly known that outside the home, military spouses serve as ambassadors, advocates, and advisors. “Their persistent leadership ensures garrison realities are elevated to command tables, transforming lived experiences into meaningful change,” added Centeno. “Ultimately, empowered spouses build resilient families that enable a lethal, ready Army. The U.S. Army Medical Command is committed to empowering spouses with the tools and resources they need to thrive — in the community, the workforce, and at home.” During her presentation, Centeno also highlighted that sustained Army investments in Soldier and Family programs, paired with grassroots mechanisms like the Army Family Action Plan, provide commanders with an early-warning readiness radar—bridging home-front stability to battlefield lethality.

Recognized as the "Voice of the Army People," AFAP is the Army’s proven grassroots platform with the power to shape programs, services, policies, regulations, and federal legislation. With more than four decades of continuous impact since its 1983 inception, the AFAP process — operating across garrison levels, Army Commands, and HQDA — remains the vital mechanism for the global force to identify, prioritize, and elevate quality-of-life issues that impact the Total Army Family. “I cannot overemphasize the importance of Soldier and Family readiness, and the critical role military spouses play in the strength of our Army,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Stackle, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe. “U.S. Army Medical Command’s support for families has a tremendous impact on the morale, welfare, and resilience of our Soldiers and their

Families. Ms. Centeno’s visit to Europe clearly highlights MEDCOM’s commitment to families and we cannot thank her enough.” According to those affiliated with the Army Family Program, military spouses are not just caregivers, they are readiness enablers and resilience builders. Their ability to adapt, support, and connect strengthens the entire military ecosystem, ensuring that service members can perform at their best while maintaining a stable, supportive home base. “We are extremely grateful to have dedicated professionals like Patricia (Patty) Centeno on our team,” said Melinda Stackle, spouse of Brig. Gen. Mark Stackle. “Through her passion and hard work, our Soldiers and their Families receive the exceptional care and attention they deserve. Patty remains committed to supporting the entire Army team, the Soldier, the Spouse, and the Family.”

animals. If you’re looking for a fast day trip that has something for families, pet lovers or solo travelers, get ready for Landau. Landau: Green space, vineyards, and scales Landau bills itself as a garden city, and rightly so. For a town with classic buildings and the requisite amount of red German roofs, greenery is everywhere in Landau. Beautiful parks dot the city’s center, and the English-style Goethe Park is especially lovely. If you’re looking for adventure, history, and outdoor time, check out the Landau Fortress Trail. Landau is also the largest wine-growing community in the Palatinate region. Located in the Rhine Valley south of Bad Dürkheim, the city has much to offer experienced wine aficionados or those who are new to German wine. By car or bicycle, push into neighboring villages such as Wollmersheim or Queichheim. Wander vineyards. Step into tasting rooms. Immerse yourself in a centuries-old wine culture. And then, there are animals and reptiles! For a not-huge but hugely

entertaining animal experience, check out the Landau Zoo. It’s perfect for children, and just the right size for a day trip. If you have a wild streak, continue on to the Landau Reptilium. There, you’ll find snakes (including a king cobra!), alligators, lizards and even non-reptiles like spiders and marmosets. With a strong emphasis on education and science, the Reptilium is perfect for family members of all ages – including dogs.

Old city center and market place in Landau.

Explore Landau’s Old Town Don’t rush through Landau’s city center on your way to the zoo or vineyards. The pedestrian zone and surrounding old town make an excellent destination in their own right, with cafés, independent shops, colorful buildings, and plenty of places to stop for lunch or a glass of Pfalz wine. Rathausplatz, once a military parade ground, is now one of the city’s main gathering places and a

good starting point for wandering. If you visit on a market day, even better. Landau’s weekly market brings local produce, flowers, baked goods, cheese, and other regional products into the center of town, adding another reason to arrive hungry. From there, stroll along Marktstraße and look for the striking Stiftskirche, whose towers rise above the pedestrian zone. Architecture fans should Jugendstil-Festhall

also make the short walk to the Jugendstil-Festhalle. Built in the Art Nouveau era, the historic hall remains one of Landau’s principal cultural venues and regularly hosts concerts, theater, and other performances. The One Thing You Have to See: Kleine Kalmit Nature Reserve Located just to the west of Landau, high above the Rhine Valley, the Kleine Kamit Nature Reserve checks all the boxes. By hiking to the summit chapel on top of the nearly 300-meterhigh hill, you get beautiful views, hiking opportunities, a sense of the importance of wine to this region, and a glimpse of a land at its natural best. If you have dogs and/or children, you also get a chance to wear them out before you drive home! Getting There By car, Landau is a beautiful one-hour drive from Kaiserslautern that takes you through the Palatinate Forest. Landau is ninety minutes south of Wiesbaden and ninety minutes north of Stuttgart. Visit the Deutsche Bahn website for train information. Photos by Sina Ettmer Photography/Shutterstock.com
