CLOTHES DRYER SAFETY

Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. But did you know how critical taking care of your clothes dryer is? With a few simple safety tips, you can help prevent dryer related issues.

There are two different types of dryers used on-base and off-base depending on your location and type of home. Condensed water and vented dryers.

» For condensed water dryers, ensure you empty the condensed water container after every drying cycle. Condensed water can cause health problems in people and animals. Please don’t drink it!!

» These dryers work more efficiently in cooler environments, so if possible, try to keep the room nice and cool by opening a window.

» For vented dryers, check and clean the flexible hose connected to your dryer for lint accumulation at least once a month.

MORE SAFETY TIPS:

» Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer.

» Regularly clean the lint filter.

» Never place plastic articles in the dryer.

» Clean clothes dryer lint trap after each use.

» Keep the area around your dryer clear of clutter like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc.

» Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry first; then they can be washed and dried as usual.

» Check the outdoor flap on vented dryers to ensure it is not blocked or covered.

» Turn the dryer off if you leave your home or when you go to bed.

» If you notice that it takes longer than usual for your clothes to dry, please check your lint filter first, and if this doesn’t resolve the problem, please call our Housing Maintenance Contractor at 06371-463-9510

FACT:

The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failing to clean or maintain them properly.

USAFEC Command Team visits 521 AMOW units in Germany

by 1st Lt. Nathan Roe 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing

U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Stephen Snelson, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Dennis Fuselier, USAFEC command chief, visited Airmen from the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, April 8-18.

During their visit, Snelson and Fuselier made their first stops at Ramstein and Spangdahlem Air Bases, where they gained a greater understanding of the vital support that the 521 AMOW provides to the Air Force’s overall mission of Rapid Global Mobility.

“We have an opportunity to come out here to get eyes on our Airmen, to see the things they are doing out on the flightline, the training they are executing to be ready to do any of those missions, and lastly to walk away with a to do list on how we can understand what obstacles are in the way of our Airmen,” Snelson said.

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing is a key unit within the Global Air Mobility Support System, which provides a logistical network of Total Force Mobility Airmen and the capabilities necessary to project, connect, maneuver, and sustain combat power anywhere around the globe.

The 521 AMOW specifically accomplishes U.S. Transportation Command missions within the U.S. European Command, U.S.

Africa Command, and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibilities by providing command and control, en route aircraft maintenance, air transportation services for theater and strategic air mobility missions, expeditionary aircrew support and inter-theater aeromedical evacuation.

“When we see some incredible Air Force and United States achievements overseas, Chief Fuselier and I know how much work goes on behind the scenes to make those things happen,” Snelson said.

“Support to the middle east with its unique mission sets and various operating locations has an impact for our 521 AMOW Airmen.”

Fuselier echoed this impact by highlighting the unique capabilities of the air mobility teams that the 521 AMOW can supply.

“The AMT mission, with the ability for our folks to forward deploy and do the things that they do here in the en-route system to provide support anywhere in the world, is pretty impressive,”

Fuselier said. “The en-route system is paramount to people and equipment being able to get in and out of the theater. But more importantly, the relationships that we have with our partners has strengthened our interoperability to ensure the mission happens.”

Snelson and Fuselier will continue their immersion visiting AMOW units in Türkiye, Spain, and Italy.

US Army medics in Europe take part in training Ukrainian military medics

U.S. Army medical Soldiers assigned to the European Simulation Center at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, had the opportunity to be part of a multi-national team that administered advanced combat medical skills training to Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel during an intense six-week training course held recently in the United Kingdom.

Military medical personnel from New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom also took part in the training.

U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class

Timothy Sargent was among the U.S. contingent that travelled to the United Kingdom recently to take part in the Platoon Combat Medical Training Course as part of Operation Interbow.

According to a report published by the British Forces Broadcasting Service, since the start of the war, more than 52,000 Ukrainians have been trained in the United Kingdom in basic battlefield first aid and over 450 in combat medic skills.

The tailored medical training program includes delivering care with little to no light, dealing with mass casualties, caring for trauma patients for lengthy periods with barely any resources, delivering care in transit and some chemical warfare scenarios.

“The training was well received by the Ukrainian soldiers,” said Sgt. 1st Class Timothy Sargent, non-

commissioned officer-in-charge of the European Medical Simulation Center at Landstuhl. “We primarily served as lead instructors for the course as well as providing medical support and facilitating training.”

According to U.K. medical officials, the Ukrainian students come from all kinds of backgrounds. Some are doctors, others are archi-

tects and electricians with no formal knowledge of how to save lives. The intense six-week-long course can teach around 50 Ukrainian trainees at a time.

“The course we took part in was a mixture of individuals with previous medical training and those with no prior medical experience,” added Sargent. “The training we provided,

Tactical Combat Casualty Care, is the internationally recognized common standard for treating combat casualties on the battlefield. Countries around the world are adapting to and want to learn TCCC concepts.”

According to the BFBS report, as the war in Ukraine has progressed, their needs have changed, and this training has been specially

designed to cover areas requested by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“Being able to train a group of Ukrainians in tactical combat medicine, many of whom are likely now using it on the battlefield, is very rewarding.” Sargent added. “The Ukrainians are very kindhearted and grateful, and I enjoyed learning about their culture.”

USAFE Band returns to Türkiye, strengthens ties during Orange Blossom Carnival

For the first time in nearly three years, the United States Air Forces in Europe Band returned to Türkiye, performing across Adana April 3–7, in support of the city’s annual Orange Blossom Carnival.

The ensemble, Touch N’ Go, a high-energy pop and rock band, performed at multiple events throughout the week, using music to connect with local communities and highlight the strong relationship between the United States and its NATO ally.

Their visit began with a series of performances surrounding the vibrant Orange Blossom Carnival, including a headlining appearance at a U.S. State Departmentled VIP Reception — an event attended by international dignitaries, local government officials, and community leaders.

“The USAFE Band serves as a cultural ambassador, building bridges between the United States and our Allies,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Nicholas Del Villano, USAFE Band trumpet player and publicity coordinator. “Being here in Adana during such an iconic celebration was an incredible opportunity to engage with the Turkish people who are at the heart of our partnership. Through music, we build personal connections that strengthen national and regional ties.”

The following day, Touch N’ Go entertained attendees at the Orange Flavors Show, adding American rhythm to the carnival’s showcase of local culture and cuisine. However, it was their April 5 performance at the Turkish American Association organized by the U.S. Consulate in Adana that left the strongest impression.

More than 500 students studying English and American culture gathered to hear the band perform, engage in Q&A sessions, and meet the musicians. The event became a highlight of the tour, offering the most direct engagement with young people eager to learn about American music and culture.

“This was easily the most impactful stop on our tour,” said Del Villano. “You could see the energy and excitement in the students’ eyes. Our participation in the Orange Blossom Carnival and other cultural events highlights the power of cultural diplomacy in continuing our bilateral alliance.”

The band wrapped up their visit with a final performance at the EducationUSA Center during a U.S. alumni reception also organized by the U.S. Consulate. The event brought together Turkish graduates of American universities and exchange programs promoting both countries’ mutual prosperity, offering a chance to build on the long-standing educational and economic ties between the United States and Türkiye.

“Music transcends language

and cultural barriers, fostering mutual respect and understanding between nations,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Lancer Hardy, USAFE Band bassist. “Whether we’re performing at a carnival, a school, or an alumni event, each moment is a chance to connect.”

The USAFE Band’s visit reflects ongoing efforts by the United States and Türkiye to strengthen their bilateral relationship and to foster mutual understanding through cultural diplomacy.

USAHC Hohenfels enhances readiness through mass casualty training exercise

U.S. Army Health Clinic Hohenfels conducted a mass casualty training exercise on April 17, to strengthen medical readiness and sharpen emergency response capabilities in a simulated large-scale combat operations environment.

More than 30 participants took part in the hands-on event, including medics, clinic providers, medical staff, and volunteers. The scenario tested essential battlefield medical tasks such as triage, patient movement, tactical combat casualty care, and medical evacuation, all under the stress of a notional attack that produced 15 simulated casualties.

“Mass casualty training equips military medical personnel with the essential skills and decision making abilities required to effectively manage mass casualty incidents,” said Maj. Curtis Mills, the exercise’s officer in charge and chief medical officer at U.S. Army Health Clinic Hohenfels. “This includes an emphasis on coordinated teamwork and cohesiveness, tactical combat casualty care, the rapid triage and prioritization of casualties, providing life-saving interventions, and medical evacuation.”

In alignment with the Army’s focus on large-scale combat operations, the training pushed participants to respond with urgency while coordinating limited resources. Role players with simulated injuries enhanced the realism of the scenario. Each casualty was assessed, triaged based on injury severity, and stabilized in one of three medical treatment bays before being prepped for evacuation.

“Heightened global tensions and the strategic importance of U.S. forces in Europe necessitate a readiness posture prepared for large-scale

conflicts,” Mills said. “Consequently, it is essential that military medical personnel are fully prepared to manage a potentially high volume of casualties in a resource-constrained environment.”

The event also allowed medical staff from the clinic to train side by side with personnel from the U.S. Army Dental Clinic Hohenfels and 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. This collaboration allowed participants to practice joint operations and build working relationships between units that may share responsibilities in a real emergency.

“Exercises like this give our Soldiers and providers the chance to build on their operational medical skills,” said Sgt. 1st Class Nathanael Lane, detachment ser-

geant at U.S. Army Health Clinic Hohenfels. “They also help our staff understand the systems in place before patients arrive from forward areas, so they are better prepared to treat them or support training for other deployed teams.”

For newer medical professionals, the opportunity to learn alongside experienced teammates was a highlight.

“Everyone around me is so skilled and knowledgeable. They move so fast, and I’m still learning. That was the most challenging part for me,” said Spc. Gabriela Jaramillo, a combat medic with 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. “But being surrounded by that kind of experience helps me grow. These types of scenarios let me learn by

doing, and I get to absorb the expertise of people who really know what they’re doing.”

Spc. Austen Perez, a radiology technician at U.S. Army Health Clinic Hohenfels, noted that even tasks outside his usual specialty provided meaningful learning opportunities.

“Today I really got to work on loading and unloading patients from the field litter ambulance, which was a great hands-on experience,” Perez said. “It was good practice to work as a team, using clear communication to move patients to

the right triage point and stay calm in a stressful situation.”

Observer coach trainers from JMRC guided participants throughout the exercise and provided feedback in a structured after-action review. Their input will help shape future drills and ensure the clinic team continues to improve and adapt.

Training events like this underscore the importance of being medically ready. Exercises like these ensure that Army medicine remains agile, capable, and prepared to meet mission requirements at every level.

Naval hospital Twentynine Palms chiropractor supports Team USA at Fencing World Cup in Egypt

CAIRO, Egypt — After a week of treating elite athletes on the global stage in Egypt, Chiropractor Carrie J. Belleson is back at Naval Hospital Twentynine Palms, bringing with her the knowledge, adaptability, and techniques refined during international competition.

From March 4–10, Belleson traveled to Cairo, Egypt, as the primary medical provider for the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Foil Fencing Teams during the 2025 Senior World Cup. The high-stakes tournament, which drew competitors from around the world, culminated in silver medal finishes for both American teams, each falling to Italy in the final matches. The men’s team lost 45–34, while the women’s team concluded their tournament with a 45–27 result.

“It is always an honor to be part of Team USA and help these athletes perform at their best,” Belleson said. “These athletes dedicate their lives to the sport, and it’s a privilege to play even a small role in their success.”

Unlike larger national teams, where comprehensive medical teams often travel together, Belleson is often the sole medical provider for the fencing team. That meant acting not only as a chiropractor, but also filling roles akin to an athletic trainer — responding to acute injuries and making quick decisions to keep athletes ready to compete, often within minutes of their next bout.

“It’s a different pace than in a clinical setting,” Belleson said. “You’re treating things in real time, under pressure, knowing the outcome of the match could even hinge on how effectively you manage a tweak or strain.”

Those fast-paced, high-pressure environments have directly informed how she treats her primary patient population: Activeduty service members. Belleson said the parallels between athletes and warfighters are stronger than most realize. Both are called on to perform physically demanding tasks under intense mental and physical stress, often with little room for injury recovery or downtime.

“I feel it is important to work with a chiropractor, athletic trainer, or physical therapist to assist in keeping an athlete performing

at their prime — or a service member in the fight,” she said. “Addressing smaller aches and pains before they become major issues helps reduce time away from the field or the mission.”

While service members at Naval Hospital Twentynine Palms don’t typically compete for Olympic medals, many are surprised — and often intrigued — to learn that their chiropractor supports world-class athletes.

“Usually the service members are very curious about the types of injuries that fencers endure,” Belleson said. “It opens the door for conversations about preventative care, movement efficiency, and the importance of early intervention — concepts that matter just as much in the military as they do in sports.”

Belleson’s international work spans multiple sports and years of experience. In addition to supporting USA Fencing, she is part of the medical team for USA Swimming, which includes doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists, nutritionists, and other specialists. She has traveled with the team to major international events such as the 2021 Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi, the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. With USA Fencing, she has worked World Cups in Serbia, Bulgaria, Georgia, and now Egypt.

These diverse experiences have helped Belleson refine her treatment approach — not just for injuries, but for overall performance optimization. She brings that same mindset to her clinic at Twentynine Palms, where she focuses on helping Marines and Sailors improve mobility, address chronic pain, and return to duty as quickly and safely as possible.

“Whether you’re diving into a pool or hiking across the desert with a full pack for a training exercise, your body has to move well, recover fast, and stay resilient,” Belleson said. “What I learn with Team USA helps me better serve our nation’s warfighters.”

As she settles back into her daily role at the hospital, Belleson remains focused on one mission: Helping the men and women in uniform stay in the fight — with the same care and attention she gives to the world’s top athletes.

Contestants compete in the Senior World Cup Foil Fencing Championship in Cairo, Egypt, March 9. Naval hospital Twentynine Palms chiropractor Carrie J. Belleson recently returned from the event, where she served as the sole medical provider for the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Foil Fencing Teams, helping both squads earn silver medals. Drawing from years of experience with national teams like USA Fencing and USA Swimming, Belleson applies the same high-performance care she provides to elite athletes to support the health and readiness of active-duty service members. Her international experience treating injuries in high-pressure, real-time environments strengthens her approach to keeping Marines and Sailors mission-ready through early intervention, mobility optimization, and preventative care.

ABC IN KMC: City of Kaiserslautern

After an extensive road trip around the County of Kaiserslautern, join us on a walking tour around the city today. We invite you to discover interesting and maybe not so well-known facts about K-town.

Emperor’s Lauter

The City of Kaiserslautern is divided into districts: Innenstadt, Grubentälchen/ Volkspark, Betzenberg, Laemmchesberg/ Uniwohnstadt, Baennjerrück/ Karl-Pfaff-Siedlung, Kaiserslautern-West (including Vogelweh), Erzhuetten, Erfenbach, Einsiedlerhof, Morlautern, Erlenbach, Moelschbach, Dansenberg, Hohenecken and Siegelbach. Kaiserslautern means the “emperor’s Lauter,” derived from the Latin word “Lutra” for the stream that still flows underground in the downtown area. The city has about 102,000 inhabitants and an additional 1,000 military families reside scattered throughout the city.

Vivid history

Kaiserslautern looks upon a history of early settlements and international occupancy throughout the centuries. Earliest settlement traces date back to 800 B.C., believed to be Celtic. During the Middle Ages Kaiserslautern became a royal residence when Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa erected a Kaiserpfalz. The Stiftskirche is the oldest church and was constructed 1250-1350. King Rudolf von Habsburg chartered the town in 1276 and St. Martin’s Church was built from 1300-1350, where a section of the original city wall can still be seen in its courtyard.

During the Thirty Year’s War (1618-1648) Spanish troops occupied the city until Swedish armies liberated the area. Later Croatian troops seized it and killed over 90 percent of its 3,200 inhabitants. French troops then invaded and occupied the area until it was restored as part of the Palatinate. In the 18th century French and Germans fought until the French eventually destroyed Barbarossa’s castle and the city towers. From 1793 until his defeat, Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have personally traveled the road, commonly referred to as “Kaiserstrasse” (B37/ Pariser/Mainzer Strasse), leading

through Kaiserslautern towards Mainz. In 1815 it became part of a Bavarian province and remained so until French troops occupied it again after World War I.

Studies, research and a technology hub Kaiserslautern has two universities, the Technical University and the Hochschule (University of Applied Sciences) with 20.000 students. It is also home to the Fraunhofer Experimental Software Engineering Institute, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. The Adam Opel automobile plant was established in 1966 and the Pfaff Sewing machine company was founded in 1862.

Red, white and red

Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa partially resided in Kaiserslautern and erected a Kaiserpfalz (an emperor’s residence) from 1152 to 1160. The remains are still visible between the city hall and the main bus stop downtown. Barbarossa means “red beard” and the city is proud to use the title “Barbarossastadt” in his honor. English tours of the underground tunnel system and other exciting tours are offered on a regular basis. www.kaiserslautern. de, search “Come along with us.”

During the Middle Ages Kaiserslautern was surrounded by numerous ponds with an abundance of fish. Legend has it that in 1497 a giant pike that had a ring

with Greek insignia was caught in the “Kaiserwoog.” It is said that Emperor Friedrich II (grandson of Barbarossa) personally put this fish in the pond 267 years earlier. Thus, the fish was integrated into the red and white city flag and coat of arms.

The players of the famous soccer team 1. FCK (Fussballclub Kaiserslautern) are often referred to as the Rote Teufel (red devils) due to their fierce battles winning the German premier league four times.

Fountains, towers and colorful flowers

Most of the city’s attractions can be visited on foot, so let’s go! The Kaiserbrunnen (emperor’s fountain) at Mainzer Tor on the north-eastern end, depicts history with a myriad of bronze sculptures including Friedrich Barbarossa, Rudolf von Habsburg, a soccer ball, an automobile engine and a boat full of dreams, along with other surprises.

Just a two-minute walk away, you may want to visit the Theodor Zink Museum, which was originally an inn for travelers, and displays historic artefacts of life and times in medieval Kaiserslautern and a model of the town. The walk will lead us down Steinstrasse, the hotspot for nightlife in the 1960s until it was finally declared offlimits for military personnel. Many buildings have been renovated and re-opened for evening fun. The artistic fountain at St. Martin’s Platz is a frequented spot to enjoy a refreshment amid pubs, restaurants and bars in historic buildings.

visitors to take a look at the former interior. The Institute for Palatine History and Folklife Studies has dedicated itself to history with a focus on the 300,000 people from the region that emigrated to the U.S. centuries ago.

The zoo in Siegelbach has animals from around the world and the Wildpark in the city’s east will acquaint you with local and (almost) distinct animals. Gelterswoog offers aqua fun with a beach, water sports and special events throughout the year. Nature lovers may want to take a hike to Humberg Turm (tower) towering over the Palatinate Forest and a view over the whole city.

Festivals and fun

Crossing the street, our walk will lead us to Stiftskirche and historic Adler Apotheke (pharmacy). Taking a right, we’ll will pass by Kaiserslautern’s oldest restaurant “Spinnrädl,” built in the 16th century, and eventually arrive at Schiller Platz across the street from Fruchthalle, the city’s concert hall, and Pfalztheater.

Casimirsaal, a banquet hall, is just beside it in front of the tall, white city hall. Completed in 1968, at that time it was the highest city hall in Germany. Restaurant 21 offers a spectacular view over the city, with “fortress Betzenberg” (Fritz-Walter Stadium) and Apostel Church with its impressive steeple.

The Japanese Garden is right across the street and especially beautiful in spring when the trees are in full bloom. There is an original tea house and a large pool with koi fish. A short walk down the road, the Gartenschau boasts a life-size dinosaur display, a skate park, playgrounds and picnic areas, a picturesque chapel made of out willow branches and colorful flower arrangements throughout the year. You can dip your feet into the cool water of the uncovered Lauter River just below the old sandstone quarry.

Unexpected treasures

During excavation work for an underground garage, a Jewish mikveh was discovered. At Synagogen Platz, two wall fragments of the synagogue, which was dismantled in 1938, are a memorial of the beauty of the structure, while seven 3D visual devices allow

Kammgarn cultural center, a former spinning mill, has a wide selection of musical entertainment and the Pfalztheater offers concerts, plays, musicals and operas. The Fruchthalle, originally intended as a farmers’ market, has a concert hall on the third floor, where annual friendship concerts by the USAREUR and USAFE Bands take place.

The “Summer Nights” take place in July, “Swinging Lautern” in September, and the Christmas Markets during the holiday season. The Messeplatz is host to the “Maikerwe” and “Oktoberkerwe” with fun and rides, gastronomic delights and music.

Fun facts:

It is said that the first American soldiers stationed in the city had difficulty pronouncing Kaiserslautern and simply nicknamed it “K-town.”

Kaiserslautern has two U.S. twin cities: Davenport, Iowa, and Columbia, South Carolina.

Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa was rather adventurous, traveled throughout Europe and drowned in Saleph River (Türkiye) on his return trip from his second crusade at nearly 70 years of age!

In the 1800s a horse-drawn carriage trip from Mainz to Kaiserslautern (about 60 km) was a day’s journey.

Kaiserslautern was the smallest of 12 cities hosting the FIFA 2006 World Cup in Germany. The U.S. team tied against Italy in a match at Fritz-Walter-Stadium with hundreds of KMC members cheering it on.

GACO CORNER

“Brut- und Setzzeit” (breeding season)

Every year at the beginning of March, the breeding season (Brut- und Setzzeit) of wildlife animals starts.

During this season, the animals give birth and start breeding. Especially in the Rheinland-Pfalz area, we have a lot of wildlife animals, like deer, wild boars, the European hare, foxes, pheasants, badgers, over 10.000 of bird species and many more native animals.

There are special rules during this season and everyone should be cautious with our wildlife animals. Please keep your dogs on a leash (between April 1 and July 15) especially on all meadows, fields and also in forests.

If you see a pup, a fawn or any animal baby, do not get close to or even touch them. Once a young animal is touched and carries the smell of a human with it, the mother will most likely reject it. In order to avoid that, stay on hiking trails and paths.

Always keep in mind — if you see a young animal, the mother won’t be far away.

high-end shopping and offthe-beaten-path local neighborhoods. No matter what type of adventure you prefer, chances are you will find it in Düsseldorf.

Here are four options for building your own Düsseldorf adventure. No matter where you decide to start in Düsseldorf, though, just make sure you do start.

Option 1: For the cars-n-sports set Germany checks the boxes for car enthusiasts, no doubt. We’ve got the autobahn, roads flooded with high-performance cars, the Nürburgring, and a whole lot more. The best car experience that you probably haven’t heard of is Düsseldorf’s Classic Remise, which is like a museum and hands-on auto shop jammed into one place. It has a magical collection of classic cars — all housed in a beautiful building — as well as shops on-site that sell parts, gear, clothes, and more. If you weren’t a motorhead when you walked into the Classic Remise, you will be when you leave.

Düsseldorf also has a really good ice hockey team, Düsseldorfer EG, one of Germany’s best for many years. The game atmosphere is excellent, and DEG employs a number of American and Canadian players at any given time (so you can cheer in English!). For a unique sporting experience, it’s hard to beat a match in Düsseldorf.

Option 2: For those who are a little bit (or a lot) Rock n’ Roll

Düsseldorf has a well-deserved reputation for being cool. The place teems with artists, art museums, street art, and art shops. The city has also given rise to a number of excellent musicians – from German rock legends Die Toten Hosen (google the translation of that name and get ready to smile) to electronica maestros Kraftwerk to indie rockers and jazz virtuosos. You’ll find high fashion, low fashion, and everything in between.

So book seats at the ballet or opera. Find a rock show (both Guns n’ Roses and AC/DC will be there this summer). Or buy tickets to Düsseldorf’s super-cool street art tour. Leave the classic art museums to classic cities and go visit the NRW Forum, which constantly offers exhibitions of contemporary art, and is always thought-provoking. Whatever you choose, the city won’t disappoint.

Option 3: For the classic tourists

Hey, no shame here! Being a classic tourist in Germany is an awesome experience. Who doesn’t love all those beautiful cobblestoned plazas? All those half-timbered buildings, exquisite stone fountains, towering churches, tranquil gardens? If that’s you, then you will be in the right place.

Start with the old town, and especially with Königsallee, which is (no joke) one of the best shopping experiences in the country. You’ll find all the usual international brands, of course. But you’ll also find side street after side street (like the clothes and shoes-friendly Shadowstrasse) lined with cool, local, and sometimes downright odd little shops. You’ll find cafés, bars, restaurants, and luxury hotels. And, incredibly, you’ll find trees.

Afterward, go ahead and be that person and stroll over to the Rhine Tower, which often shines at night with amazing laser shows. Ride that elevator all the way up, more than 560 feet. Book at table at QOMO, or have a drink at the bar. And watch the world from way up high. It’s an experience that will elevate you.

Option 4: For the off-the-beatenpath fans

Head north from the city center to the aptly named Nordstrasse. There, your indie-shop loving soul will find peace. A beautiful neighborhood, this district has loads of little shops, bakeries, bookstores, music stores, and more stores. It’s also just a really pretty place in which to walk, and a sharp contrast in terms of feel to Königsallee. Nordstrasse feels like authentic Düsseldorf.

Grab a cup of coffee afterward, and then head to the Japanese Garden to chill out for a little while. This urban oasis is filled with waterworks, sculpted pines, and quiet places to reflect. Best of all, entrance is free!

Afterward, head south (back toward the city center) to Little Tokyo. This living shrine to Japanese culture is a relatively rare occurrence in Germany – and one that is not to be missed.

If you’re in town on a Saturday, it is highly recommended to visit the massive flea market at Aachener Platz, which has hundreds and hundreds of vendors selling almost anything and everything.

Getting to Düsseldorf

By car, Düsseldorf is approximately 3 hours from Kaiserslautern, 2.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 4 hours for Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
