Kindergraves memorial: KMC remembers children who passed away in infancy

From 1952 to 1971 American infants, born at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or at German hospitals nearby, who passed away at birth or shortly after, were laid to rest at the main cemetery in Kaiserslautern (Waldfriedhof) adjacent to U.S. Army Daenner Kaserne. At that time, many military members did not have the capability or funds to send the bodies to the United States.

Four hundred-fifty-two babies were buried at the cemetery and members of the German-American and International Women’s Club knew of the graves and maintained them early on, as the military families had moved on to other duty locations.

The Kaiserslautern Kindergraves Memorial Foundation was established in 1986, and its purpose is to maintain the memorial site, organize ceremonies in remembrance of the children and be a conduit of information for family inquiries. Representatives from the Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group and the German-American Club (former German-American International Women’s Club) serve as co-chairs for the foundation.

Each spring following Mother’s Day, a memorial ceremony is sponsored by the KKMF in cooperation with the Kaiserslautern Military Community leadership and Kaiserslautern city officials. Floral wreaths are placed at the front monument and a candle lighting ceremony takes place in during the church service in memory of the children. A flower and an American flag are placed at each grave marker.

The upkeep of the Kindergraves is possible through the generous monetary donations of the local community. The Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group, students from the Kaiserslautern Burggymnasium and the Sergeant Morales Club organize volunteers to accomplish year-round maintenance (grass cutting, edging, trimming and stone cleaning) as well as decorating the graves for the ceremony.

THE HOUSING HYPE

A GUIDE TO LIVING IN MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING

By following a few simple guidelines, you can enjoy your home to the fullest while contributing to a vibrant and well-maintained community.

Caring for your home

» German homes differ from those in the U.S., mainly that they feature cinderblock walls which require special care like masonry anchors when hanging decorations. Avoid placing nails or screws in line with electrical outlets.

» The homes are built airtight, so it is important to ensure proper ventilation by opening windows twice (2x) daily for 20 minutes to prevent mold buildup so it’s important to ventilate properly.

Keeping your surroundings beautiful

» Residents play a key role in maintaining curb appeal. This includes mowing, edging, weeding and watering the area within 50 yards of your home. Trees within reach should be trimmed and shrubs kept under six (6) feet tall.

Parking

» Townhouse residents have a garage and driveway and should utilize these areas for parking vehicles. Stairwell residents are assigned one (1) parking space per home. Additional vehicles should be parked in designated areas, and non-operational vehicles must be stored properly or taken to the vehicle recycling center.

Essential services and utilities

» TKS provides internet service with pre-installed modems—please do not remove or pack this equipment when moving out.

» Waste disposal is straightforward with designated bins and bags. Large and/or hazardous items should be taken to the nearest recycling centers on Pulaski Barracks and Ramstein Air Base.

Pet-friendly living

» You may have up to three (3) pets with a combined weight of 150 pounds unless otherwise approved. Some dog breeds are restricted, so be sure to check regulations. Always leash your pets when outdoors and clean up after them. Report any pet-related incidents, including bites, to 86 SFS (DSN 480-2050/ COM 06371 472050) or 569 USFPS (DSN 489-6060/ COM 0631-536 6060) immediately.

Fire safety & household guidelines

» Preventing fires is simple; never leave cooking or candles unattended and keep flammable items away from stove areas. Housing personnel may enter in emergencies or within 24 hours for an inspection.

Restrictions

» Smoking is prohibited in all units, including balconies and hallways. Other restricted items include satellite dishes, large pools, external storage sheds, and unapproved flags.

» Townhouse residents may display one (1) properly mounted U.S. flag.

Respecting quiet hours

» Germany observes quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and all day on Sundays/ German holidays. Please keep noise levels in check, including music and pets. Persistent disturbances should be reported to 86 SFS (DSN 480-2050/ COM 06371 472050) or 569 USFPS (DSN 489-6060/ COM 0631-536 6060).

Vacation or TDYs exceeding seven (7) days

» If you are away for more than seven (7) days, plan for security, ventilation, lawn care and snow removal. Notify the KMC Housing Office, and, if you live in a stairwell, inform your building leader with your caretaker’s contact details.

Operating a home business

» Please contact the KMC Housing Office for guidance. You must get approval from Housing and obtain the necessary licenses.

Financial responsibility/ Renter’s insurance

» Residents are financially responsible for damage due to negligence. Renter’s insurance is highly recommended. Liability and pet insurance can also prevent costly claims.

Maintenance/Self-help

» For anything breaking due to normal wear and tear, you may use the selfhelp stores or call Family Housing Maintenance at 06371-463-9510. This free service helps keep your home in good condition.

By following these guidelines, you help create a safe, enjoyable, and well-maintained community for yourself, your neighbors, and future residents.

The power of showing up: A story of resilience, unbreakable bonds

When one woman found herself far from home, injured and alone, a community of sisters she had never met rose up to stand beside her. Their mission wasn’t written in an operation manual, nor was it a tasking order from leadership. It was a calling from the heart, a testament to the strength of sisterhood and the quiet power of simply showing up.

In August, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Iasia Norton-Gardner, 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron aviation resource management assistant noncommissioned officer in charge, stationed at Vilseck, Germany, was in a devastating accident.

“I was playing football with members in my squadron for PT when I was struck in the head and suffered a brain injury,” NortonGardner recalled. “At first, I was in shock. I didn’t realize how serious it was or how it was going to affect me going forward.”

The aftermath wasn’t just physical; it was a winding journey through medical boards, treatments, and the overwhelming weight of isolation. Her treatment plan required travel to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for care at the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic, a place unfamiliar, miles from her support system, and requiring 24/7 accompaniment she didn’t have.

Enter Tech. Sgt. Elizabeth Meyer, 435th Contingency Response Group unit training section chief; Master Sgt. Shea Figueroa, 4th Air Support Operations Group first sergeant; and Master Sgt. Heather Hegland, 435th Security Forces Squadron first sergeant, three leaders who didn’t hesitate when the call for help came.

“I received the message around 7:30 that evening requesting immediate assistance,”

Hegland recalled. “By eight, I was already out the door, knowing I’d be staying overnight.”

But what started as a logistical puzzle soon became a deeply personal mission.

Knowing one person couldn’t do it alone, they rallied others. Meyer held the unit’s leadership phone that day.

“At the end-of-day huddle, I asked all the women in the squadron to stay back,” she shared. “I told them the situation. Not one person hesitated, they were glad to help.”

Within hours, a group chat buzzed with volunteers from across units and wings. “I can take this shift,” “I can cover tonight,” “I’ll bring food,” messages poured in from women who didn’t know the Airman personally, but knew they couldn’t let her face it alone.

Norton-Gardner was overwhelmed.

“I was extremely overjoyed to know there were individuals willing to volunteer their time to assist me,” she said. “They were truly like angels sent to help me get around and emotionally support me.”

begging the front desk for whatever they had.”

“She was miserable at first,” Figueroa said. “Lights had to be off because they hurt her head. Even moving her in a wheelchair took an hour, any bump made her nauseous. But she didn’t quit. She kept going.”

But their impact ran deeper than logistics.

“She didn’t smile much in the beginning,” Figueroa admitted. “She was sad, frustrated. But by the time we got her ready to leave, she was smiling. She even started making plans for her future, going to school, looking ahead. Seeing that change was everything.”

“… this is what we’re here for. We are our sisters’ keepers.”
Tech. Sgt. Elizabeth Meyer 435th Contingency Response Group unit training section chief

Their acts weren’t glamorous: overnight stays in uncomfortable conditions, moving her between rooms when necessary, wheeling her at a snail’s pace so every bump wouldn’t worsen her pain.

“I went scrambling for ice one day,” Meyer laughed softly. “Her neck hurt so badly, and the dorm had no ice packs. I ran downstairs,

For Norton-Gardner, those conversations, even the lighthearted ones, became lifelines.

“They assisted me to appointments, brought me food, and just… supported me. A few even brought me snacks and homemade meals.

I’ll never forget that,” she said.

“One night, we talked for over an hour about Criminal Minds,” Meyer added. “Her whole face lit up. Those moments mattered.”

Each woman juggled their own responsibilities: careers, families, even breastfeeding infants. Yet they found a way to carve out time, to step up, to cover shifts, to hold space.

“We weren’t just checking a box,” all three women agreed. “We were showing her she mattered, as a person, not a burden, not an obligation.”

Their mission wasn’t written in an operation manual, nor was it a tasking order from leadership. It was a calling from the heart, a testament to the strength of sisterhood and the quiet power of simply showing up.

Their service extended beyond the individual; it forged bonds across units, wings, and roles.

“It was amazing seeing women from all over come together,” Hegland noted. “We had people from different wings, different commands. Everyone wanted to help.”

It proved to be a life-changing experience for Norton-Gardner.

“This experience definitely boosted my faith in humanity,” she said. “There’s so much bad going on in the world, but this is an amazing story of true kindness.”

And the women who showed up? They say it changed them too.

“You never know when you’ll be called to be a wingman in ways that aren’t in the playbook,” Meyer said. “But this is what we’re here for. We are our sisters’ keepers.”

In a military culture often driven by mission first, these women embodied an essential truth: people are the mission.

“She persevered,” Figueroa summarized. “And we were honored to walk with her every step.”

Going forward, Norton-Gardner plans to do the same for others.

“This motivates me to continue helping others, spreading kindness, and looking at the bigger picture,” she said. “In fact, I started a volunteer organization at Vance Air Force Base [Oklahoma] called “Helping Handz.” I truly believe when you do good, it will eventually come back to you.”

Their story reminds us that sisterhood isn’t confined to friendship or familiarity. It’s a shared promise to show up, to carry each other through the darkest moments, to be the light when the world feels too heavy.

As they reflected on the experience, one sentiment echoed from every woman involved: “I hope she knows she was never alone.”

1st CMXS redesignated as 1st EIS at Ramstein

The 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron was officially redesignated as the 1st Engineering Installation Squadron at Kapaun Air Station, May 12.

The redesignation marks a pivotal shift for the unit, establishing a formal process for them to accomplish communications support across all of United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa.

“This is a milestone that’s been coming for a while,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Caleb Mays, 1st EIS commander. “This ceremony represents far more than a name change, it signifies a commitment to the EI standard.”

The 1st CMXS was a one-of-itskind squadron, without any applicable standard to follow which created confusion and allowed the unit to change directions frequently.

“Now that we are associated with being an EI squadron, there is a well defined guide to follow that helps to ensure that our work quality is the highest it can be,” Mays said. “The forms, processes,

training, evaluations and inspections we will do now all combine to empower our Airmen to make sure the final product is engineered and installed with the highest competence, and best quality possible.”

To ensure the 1st EIS is ready for this significant task, EIS Airmen from multiple guard units are training them to ensure they’re capable of accomplishing this mission.

When a unit is having a communications issue, they can reach out to the 1st EIS, who will then determine the priority of their request. The 1st EIS will then send

Providing repairs to communications isn’t the only focus of the 1st EIS though. They also focus on engineering and installing new communications requirements.

The 1st EIS provides the Department of Defense forces with specialized communications engineering, installation, maintenance and emergency restoration to ensure sustainable and versatile connectivity throughout Europe and Africa.

“In the past, the 1st CMXS

was primarily focused on radio, tower and antenna maintenance for various sites in Europe,” Mays said. “That mission has significantly decreased. In its place, is the increase in engineering and installing new communications requirements for each of the bases around USAFE.”

It is clear that without communications, USAFE would not function properly. This new change provides assurance that USAFE Airmen and leaders stay connected at all times.

Fueling readiness: US, Morocco conduct air-to-air refueling operations at African

Lion 2025

MARRAKESH, MOROCCO — In the skies above the North African coast, the low rumble of jet engines signaled more than just routine flight operations, it marked a strengthening of international military partnerships.

U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 166th Air Refueling Squadron, 121st Air Refueling Wing, Ohio Air National Guard, partnered with Royal Moroccan Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon pilots to conduct air-to-air refueling familiarization and continuation training during African Lion 2025 (AL25), May 13 –24, over Morocco.

AL25, the largest annual military exercise in Africa, brings together over 50 nations, including seven NATO allies and 10,000 troops to conduct realistic, dynamic and collaborative training in an austere environment that intersects multiple geographic and functional combatant commands.

Operating the KC-135R Stratotanker, the 166th ARS provided vital training support by simulating aerial refueling procedures, giving Moroccan pilots the opportunity to practice critical approaches and communication tactics without actual fuel transfer, commonly referred to as “dry contacts.”

“Although we didn’t offload fuel during these dry contacts, this type of training is essential for maintaining proficiency, currency, and trust in multinational oper-

ations,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Anthony Derryberry, 166th Air Refueling Squadron tactics non-commissioned officer in charge. “It builds the muscle memory required for future real-world missions.”

Sixteen Moroccan F-16 pilots participated in the training sorties, practicing multiple contacts and refining techniques necessary for safe and effective refueling at high altitudes and speeds. The training was designed to enhance readiness and interoperability between U.S. and Moroccan forces, which play a strategic role in regional security and coalition operations.

“This exercise offers a rare and valuable opportunity to fly with one of our key regional partners,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Dennis Bird, Ohio National Guard Joint

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center achieves historic dual trauma certification

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center has achieved a historic milestone in international military medicine, becoming the first and only U.S. military hospital overseas to be designated a supra-regional trauma center by the German Society for Trauma Surgery (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie — DGU). This recognition underscores LRMC’s longstanding commitment to delivering world-class trauma care in support of U.S. and NATO forces across multiple combatant commands.

“Trauma comes out of the blue and often at unsociable hours, it requires dedication clearly evident by your excellent staff at LRMC,” said Professor (Dr.) Dietmar Pennig, DGU secretary general. “We are looking forward to our continuing collaboration and we congratulate you all on this outstanding achievement.”

The Supra Regional Trauma Center designation was commemorated April 25 during a formal ceremony attended by U.S. military leaders, German medical officials, and NATO partners. The DGU’s recognition adds to LRMC’s already significant distinction as the only

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center receives certification as an Überregionales Trauma Zentrum, or supra-regional trauma center, by the German Society for Trauma Surgery (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie) during an award ceremony April 24, in Landstuhl. The certification recognizes LRMC’s continued excellence in trauma care and its integration into the German national trauma network as the only American hospital outside the U.S. to receive such a designation.

American College of Surgeonsverified Level II Trauma Center located outside the United States, reaffirmed following a rigorous 14-month evaluation process.

“This honor speaks volumes about the extraordinary team we have here and the quality of care we provide, not just to our service members but also in close collaboration with our host nation partners,” said

U.S. Army Col. Ted Brown, LRMC’s commanding officer.

According to senior military medical officials, LRMC serves as the final common pathway for the evacuation and treatment of wounded service members from the U.S. European Command, Central Command, Africa Command, and Special Operations Command. As a critical node within the Combatant

Command Trauma System, LRMC supports forward-deployed forces and ensures continuity of care from point of injury to definitive treatment.

“Our partnership with the DGU represents the strength of our alliance with Germany and our shared commitment to medical excellence,” said Connie Johnson, trauma program man -

ager at LRMC. “This certification confirms that our standards and capabilities are on par with the most advanced trauma centers in Europe.”

The event also recognized LRMC’s role as a regional trauma hub certified by both the U.S. and host nation — a unique dualrecognition model that enhances interoperability and ensures readiness in support of contingency operations.

A senior military medical official indicated that as global security dynamics continue to evolve, LRMC remains postured to meet the demands of future conflicts, delivering mission-critical trauma care to U.S. service members, NATO allies, and partner nations when and where it is needed most.

“This certification is not only a testament to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s expertise but is also a reflection of their dedication to continuous improvement, patient safety, and quality care,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Transportation expert provides sage advice as Europe’s summer PCS season approaches

Permanent change of duty station moves can be stressful, but the Army has transportation experts available to assist. In Europe, the transportation offices are assigned to the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s eight Logistics Readiness Centers and aligned with each Army Garrison across Germany, Italy, Poland and the Benelux.

The transportation counselors and assistants at these LRCs know how stressful the PCS process can be and stand ready to assist Soldiers and Army families with managing their household goods shipments, unaccompanied baggage and other transportation needs.

Michael Leyba is the chief of transportation at LRC RheinlandPfalz, 405th AFSB. He said knowledge and decisive action are critical for Soldiers and families to help ensure success with their upcoming summer peak season PCS moves.

“For U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz community members, as soon as they have their orders, they should immediately come to our transportation office. We are taking walk-ins, and they can come to see us at Daenner Kaserne in Building 3104 on the first floor, room 101,” said Leyba, who added that servicemembers living in the other communities across Europe should do the same at their supporting LRCs.

Leyba also said flexibility is key

to successful PCS moves. He recommends customers plan accordingly and come to the transportation office with both primary and alternate pickup and pack out dates. During the summer peak PCS season, the contracted moving companies are extremely busy so having some flexibility can make a positive difference.

“And they should try to plan plenty of time between their first visit to our transportation office and their scheduled pickup and pack out dates. There’s simply a lot going on in a relatively short amount of time,” he said. “Also, prior to making flight arrangements through SATO travel, they need to make sure they already have their household goods appointments booked. They have to allow for adequate time to clear their commands.”

With PCS moves, it’s not just about pickups, pack outs and flight departures. Arrivals are important, too. Immediately upon arrival at a new duty station, a Soldier should sign up for and take advantage of Army Community Service’s lending closet and the installation loaner furniture program, when available, said Leyba. These services are available for incoming Soldiers and Army families at many installations and garrisons in Europe and are offered at other locations as well. Soldiers and families should contact ACS and their local housing office for more information and to check for availability.

During a PCS, Leyba said if anything out of the ordinary occurs

as

or the inkling of a problem arises, Soldiers and Army families should immediately contact the Soldier’s chain of command and reach out to their local transportation office. They can also call the 24-hour hotline for questions on PCS moves at 833-MILMOVE.

No matter what the circumstance, when it comes to moving household goods and unaccompanied baggage, Leyba recommends Soldiers reach out to their local transportation office and speak to a trained representative. They are there to help.

Steps to take:

• Visit the installation transportation office as soon as orders are received. Don’t wait.

• Whether this is a first move or 15th, take advantage of counseling. The local transportation office is the best resource of information specific to that location.

• If movers cannot be arranged to support the PCS, talk with Soldier’s chain of command immediately to explore options – which may include changes to reporting timelines.

• Be patient with the transportation office personnel. They are here to assist you.

• Contact the local transportation office if moving plans change or when questions or concerns arise during the PCS process.

Helpful sites: The Defense Personal Property System website(https://dps.move. mil/cust), U.S. Transportation Command’s MilMove website (https://my.move.mil/), and Military OneSource’s PCS & Military Moves webpage (https:// www.militaryonesource.mil/moving-pcs/plan-to-move/pcs-and-military-moves/) can help with getting started and scheduling PCS moves but always check with or call the local LRC transportation office to ensure everything is on point and good to go, Leyba said.

The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The brigade provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces. For more information on the 405th AFSB, visit the official website (https://www. afsbeurope.army.mil/) and the official Facebook site (https://www. facebook.com/405thAFSB).

As soon
Soldiers receive PCS orders, they should go to their local transportation office for assistance. The Defense Personal Property System website at https://dps.move.mil/cust can help with getting started and scheduling their next PCS moves. But remember, always check with or call the local transportation office to ensure everything is on point and good to go. Graphic by Cameron Porter)

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz performers and volunteers took center stage at the 65th annual TOPPERs Awards April 26 on Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden, to celebrate excellence in military community theater.

Installation Management Command-Europe hosted the black-tie event, which recognized standout performances and technical achievements from Army community theater programs in Germany, Belgium and Italy. The evening also honored the volun-

teers who power these productions year-round.

“This is the Tony Awards for military community theatre,” said Naythen Rinehart, managing artistic director at KMC Onstage. “It’s a red-carpet event where overseas military communities come together for a night of spectacular performances, guest celebrity presenters and camaraderie in the arts.”

Rheinland-Pfalz’s production of “Ruthless! The Musical” earned nominations this season.

Cast Member Iryna Osipova said the evening surpassed her expectations.

“The talent and excitement

in the room were contagious,” Osipova said. “Theater gives me confidence and purpose beyond everyday life.”

The awards also highlighted the dedication of volunteers who support the theater community.

Beth Dougherty, who won Best Set Design for a Musical, was recognized the night before the awards as USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Civilian Volunteer of the Year for logging more than 500 hours of service.

Organizers credited the volunteers with the success of the program. “None of this would be possible without our volunteers,” said Rinehart. “Their dedication

keeps the stage lights on and the magic alive.”

Reana Jones, a visual information specialist with the NAF Support Division, emphasized the importance of KMC Onstage to those living overseas.

“Participating in the theater community has become a vital part of our lives,” Jones said. “Our KMC Onstage theater family is an inspiration. You don’t have to be a performer to get involved. There are so many ways to contribute and become part of something bigger.”

KMC Onstage is USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s award-winning community theater in

Kaiserslautern that provides a wide variety of theater entertainment, education and community engagement opportunities for youth, families and adults.

16th Sustainment Brigade, 405th Army Field Service Brigade, and U.S. Army Garrisons Stuttgart and Rheinland Pfalz.

The three-day event focused on synchronizing mission-critical activities for the on-time relocation of personnel, equipment, and families. Utilizing a time-phased approach, operational planning representatives and stakeholders provided updates on key tasks, requirements, and timelines for each operational phase. Over 30 topics were reviewed and discussed.

The ROC drill successfully identified potential friction points and resource gaps requiring resolution or mitigation strategies ahead of the 2026 move. It also provided 1-10 SFG(A) a valuable opportunity to rehearse its relocation plan, incorporating the Enterprise’s established requirements and constraints. Parti -

cipating senior leaders praised 1-10 SFG(A)’s detailed relocation plan, recognizing it as a testament to sound Army doctrine and a blueprint for a successful transition.

These ongoing improvements and modernizations will benefit the entire Baumholder military community and ensure that BH will be seen as a premier assignment for Soldiers and their families stationed overseas.

ABC IN KMC: Kusel County

Kusel County

Now that we’ve made an abundance of discoveries in Kaiserslautern and Donnersberg Counties, let’s head out a bit northwest and see what our neighbor, the County of Kusel, has in store. It is home to over 2,000 American and NATO members within the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

The county is comprised of three union communities: Oberes Glantal, Lauterecken-Wolfstein and Kusel-Altenglan with a total population of 71,500. The City of Kusel is the administrative county seat and the third smallest district town in Germany with its 5408 inhabitants.

While not as well-known as Germany’s bustling metropolitan cities, the Kusel district offers a tranquil escape to those seeking breathtaking landscapes with a blend of history and culture. The county covers an area of about 573 square kilometers (221 square miles) and is comprised of an astonishing number of 98 individual towns and villages!

Kusel is surrounded by rolling hills, dense forests, and meandering rivers, making it an eldorado for nature enthusiasts. The district is part of the North Palatine Uplands, offering plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring.

Kusel has a history that stretches back thousands of years, and evidence of human settlement in the area dates to prehistoric times.

The district has seen the influence of Celtic tribes, Roman conquerors, and medieval feudal lords, each leaving their mark on its culture and architecture.

Three charming union communities

Let’s begin our road trip around the county at the Gartenschau premises in Kaiserslautern. Following the picturesque course of the Lauter River along Lautertal (valley), we will encounter a few quaint villages and finally reach Lauterecken-Wolfstein. This is the furthest union community towards the north and least populated by members of the KMC. Lauterecken is the administrative seat although it is a very small town with roughly over 2,000 inhabitants. Here the historic Lauter bridge, where the river flows into the Glan River, and nearby Wasserschloss Reipoltskirchen, the best-preserved water castle in Rheinland-Pfalz, are worth a visit.

Nearby Wolfstein, which is celebrating 750 years of city rights this year, is famous for its Kalkbergwerk (lime stone mine), which offers tours and events for the public. The company Karl Otto Braun is the largest employer in Kusel County and has been a leading manufacturer of specialized medical textiles since 1903. The company also has subsidiaries in India, Japan and in Atlanta, Georgia. It offers a wide range of products tailored for sports medicine, orthopedics, wound care and is a global market leader for elastic medical bandages.

Following the the Glan River

upstream, we’ll reach the Union Community of Oberes Glantal. Schönenberg-Kübelberg is the largest town and serves as the administrative center, well known for its welcoming atmosphere and a great starting point for exploring the region or a stroll over its farmers’ market every Friday. Oberes Glantal is known for its rolling hills, scenic landscapes and its leisure lake Ohmbachsee, a popular spot for hiking, fishing and boating.

The town is famed for its mysterious Bierkeller that is said to hold more than one secret. It was constructed in 1843 by Silesian miners, and according to sightings, the ghost of the first brewer still roams the tunnels. A hidden treasure was supposedly buried there during World War II and some claim that there is an underground passage that was used to smuggle goods and evade taxes. Today, it is part of the “Begehbares Geschichtsbuch” (Walkable History Book) project, which aims to make local history accessible and engaging. The bierkeller and its mysteries is open to the public every first Sunday of the month from 2 to 5 p.m.

Swinging back into the heart of Kusel County, we’ll hit KuselAltenglan with the town Kusel being the administrative seat maintaining 31 individual towns and villages. It has a mix of rural charm and small-town amenities.

Kusel’s music culture is rather noteworthy. The district has a long-standing tradition of brass bands and musicians that roamed the countryside in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of

the musicians even emigrated to the United States and there is a “Musikantenland Museum” at Lichtenberg Castle. The “FritzWunderlich-Halle,” named after Fritz Wunderlich, born in Kusel and one of Germany’s most celebrated tenors, offers world class entertainment from jazz, classic music, musicals, big bands and even rock stars throughout the year.

Wildpark und Greifvogelzoo Potzberg is a further attraction that offers a domestic animal park, a zoo with birds of prey and flight demonstrations. Another alternate and fun mode of transportation using muscle power is a draisine (trolley) tour from Altenglan to Lauterecken or vice-versa during the summer.

Ladies and Knights

The most prominent landmark nearby overlooking the village of Thallichtenberg is Lichtenberg Castle ruins. With its 425 meters in length, it is one of the longest castles in Germany and the largest in the Palatinate region. Its history dates to around 1200 when it was constructed as a spur castle, a type of medieval fortification that is sited on a spur of a hill for defensive purposes. Initially, it was owned by the Counts of Veldenz until 1444, after which it came under the rule of Stephen, Count Palatine of Simmern-Zweibrücken, where it served as an important administrative seat.

In 1792, French troops occupied the region, and the castle suffered significant damage due to plundering and a fire in 1799.

After the defeat of Napoleon, the area was handed over to the Duke of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha in 1816 and by 1834, the principality was sold to Prussia, when the castle fell into disrepair. In 1895, it was placed under historical monument protection, and restoration efforts began in the 20th century.

Today the castle is a popular tourist destination, not only for the magnificent view, but it also houses the music museum and a natural history museum. In addition, there is a herb garden, a youth hostel, a kiosk and a restaurant. Occasionally, workshops and exhibitions take place, such as basket weaving, herb gardening and stained-glass crafting.

The most popular events are the middle-age summer market, and a medieval Christmas market held at the end of November. The castle then transforms into a festive medieval wonderland with knights and ladies, authentic reenactments, crafts, middle-age music and dance performances, archery, fire shows and medieval style foods and drinks.

Festivals and fun

Each union community, or even town and village, celebrates a fest of its own throughout the seasons, but the largest festivals take place in Kusel itself. In the spring there is an Easter and Spring Market, the Hutmacher (hat maker) fest takes place in June and the Kusel Messe in early September.

A must-experience 24-hour and 100-kilometer march for those interested in history. The start will be in Waldsee (about 1 hour from Ramstein AB) with the finish at the Maginot Lines

at Kasematte Esch in France. There you will find a bunker complex with museum where the U.S. Amry fought a hard battle in the last days of WWII. The march, in the style of a 100-kilometer escape and evasion march, is in remembrance of all soldiers, regardless of their nationality, for the sacrifices made, during the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII.

German service members will walk side-by-side with civilians in this 24-hour challenge. The German Landeskommando of the Bundeswehr advertised the march and many have already registered.

They cordially invite American service members and civilians of the Kaiserslautern Military Community to participate in the name of international understanding. If 100-kilometers are too long, shorter routes are also possible. Marching together in remembrance is the main pillar of this project/challenge. Four paratroopers will jump at the start and the mayor of Waldsee will also join and release 12 white “Pigeons of Peace.” Further information and registration at: erik.wieman@gmail. com (English speaking).

21st TSC, SDDC, Hellenic Armed Forces expand power projection in the Mediterranean region

KAVALA, GREECE — For the first time, U.S. Army units launched vehicle convoys from the pier at the Commercial Port of Kavala (Filippos B), which rolled onto the nearby National Highway enroute to conduct training in support of the Defender 25 NATO exercise series on May 7.

The Port of Kavala, located in central Northern Greece, is now the newest port in the catalog of dozens of ports across the span of the European continent that provides NATO with the capability to deliver fighting forces and resupply combatant commanders.

“The opening of the Port of Kavala is a major milestone for bolstering strategic readiness, through enhanced logistic support, which translates directly to a more robust power projection platform for the Mediterranean region,” according to Andre Cameron, the director of Surface Deployment and Distribution Command’s Transportation Corps Detachment Eastern Mediterranean - Greece.

According to Cameron, this proof-of-concept event is proving to be value added to sustaining warfighting and lethality functions in the region to deter aggression by competitors to NATO.

“This event will further enhance supply chain networks, delivering efficiencies based on capacity flow and speed of throughput from South to Forward Operating Sites to meet strict timelines,” said Cameron. “Kavala adds one more option to the region to supply combatant commanders in the region.”

Although the vehicles that rolled from the port headed North were solely U.S. Army, it took a lot of hard work from a multitude of multinational team members from the Hellenic Army and Coast Guard, as well as support from Greek municipal and regional authorities, including the Port Authority leadership.

“Lots of relationships, partnerships, and friendships have been forged with our host nation counterparts to make this happen. We cannot thank the Hellenic forces and the civilian leadership enough for their unwavering support and commitment. They have embodied the spirit of hospitality and partner-

The 28th Infantry Division’s convoy left the Port of Kavala, Greece, on May 7, for onward movement to Defender 25 training areas. This convoy is part of an RSOM operation, which constitutes the first U.S. Army use of the Port of Kavala. According to Andre Cameron, the director of the U.S. Army’s Transportation Corps Detachment Eastern Mediterranean - Greece, the Port of Kavala is being used during DE 25 as a proof of concept and is now the newest port able to be used by U.S./NATO forces to sustain warfighting functions and lethality capabilities in the region.

ship through this entire process,” said Cameron.

During initial planning for the U.S. Army’s use of the port, the importance of the partnerships between the Hellenic Army and Coast Guard became clear. According to Cameron, the port authority quickly built structures like a barrier wall to separate the military and commercial operations to deconflict mission sets yet showcasing interoperability. Hellenic forces provided multi-

level maritime, ground ops, and traffic security functions to ensure force protection and safety. This also included Hellenic forces escorts for convoys to ensure safe and unhindered arrival to training locations.

“Using the Port of Kavala is important for power projection in the region because it enables us to have multiple nodes we can use. This is a truly historic event and a milestone in the relationship between the U.S. and Greece,” said

Brig. Gen. Karen Monday-Gresham, the deputy commanding general of the 21st TSC. “Due to it being the first time we have brought in a vessel and discharged equipment at this location. It has been fairly speedy and efficient with the ability to hit follow-on transportation whether it is convoys or commercial trucking or the future expansion of rail operations. This port addition enables us to have many more options and opportunities should we need them for future missions here.”

Future plans for the port, within the next five years, are to establish a rail terminal for more movement options from the port to other parts of the region. The rail terminal is among other infrastructure improvements proposed and planned by Greek authorities.

“We have been closely cooperating for the past few months to have everything ready according to the standards that have been communicated by the U.S. Army. We hope we have lived up to the U.S.’s expectations and we are ready to assist the Army with any future needs in the same manner,” said Nikos Paschalis, the terminal manager of the Port of Kavala.

CROSSWORD

Get a Taste of Southern Germany

Barely in Bavaria but very much a part of this region, Rothenburg is perfect for getting the taste of southern Germany without the drive and all the “Staus” (traffic jams). It also has a great history. Early settlements here date back to 970 and have continued to grow along the river Tauber throughout the centuries.

Part of the Franconia in Bavaria, Rothenburg is one of the most well-preserved towns of Germany, it’s a photographer’s dream. You’ll find plenty of shots for half-timbered houses, residents in Dirndl and Lederhosen, and shops decorated in the 18th century style.

Fun fact: filming of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2 took place in Rothenburg as well as scenes from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was also the inspiration for the village in Disney’s 1940 Pinocchio.

Summer Parades

Last summer we just happened to pick a weekend in July and drove to Rothenburg. What we came upon was magical! During the summer, we found out that Rothenburg hosts a town parade every Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. celebrating the different clans, regional community groups and marching bands.

Walled City

Practically the entire city is surrounded by the original walls that once protected this beautiful town. You can walk and walk inside the wall on the top level giving you views of the town that are spectacular. If you’re tall, watch out! It’s very easy to bang your head.

Almost in perfect condition, there seemed to be endless (Turms) towers, gates and fortifications for this pristine town. Walking the city wall is definitely worthwhile. Because the city is in great historical condition, wear a good pair of sneakers. Think original cobblestone.

Fests

Rothenburg also has several fests throughout the year, including a Christmas Market that is world famous. Rothenburg has a festival for every season. More information is available at: https://www.rothenburg.de/en/ erleben/veranstaltungen/veranstaltungshighlights

Shopping

Is Christmas on your mind? While in Rothenburg, you will find one of our American military favorite shops Käthe Wolhfahrt. Although pretty commercialized and set up for tourists, I always happen to find something in this store I can’t live without.

Admittedly, when we head stateside I always find myself saying, “Oh, I shoulda picked up more ornaments! What was I thinking?” The Christmas Market, located right on the main square is super easy to find. Just look for the bear.

Museums

1) The Medieval Crime Museum (Kri minal museum) gives you a glimpse into the nature of criminal justice, including lots of torturing techniques and other devices you will secretly really enjoy staring at.

2) The Christmas Museum (Deutsches Weihnachtsmuseum) / German Christmas Museum is open all year long and elaborates on the history of the holiday in different countries.

3) Try a Nightwatchman tour, which has received great reviews and thereby gained our trust!

Eating

One of the best attributes of Rothenburg is the location. Because it borders Swabia and is just inside Bavaria, the menus are always superb. You will be delighted to know most menus include Maultaschen and Jaegerschnitzel with fries and gravy. Another great

treat are these pastry balls that are wrapped several times with layers of dough and either covered or tossed in brown sugar and cinnamon. YUM!

We ate at the Baumeisterhaus right off the square. It was a very crowded Saturday but we were able to eat lunch after 2 p.m. If you’ve been in Germany for at least two weeks, you know this is right around cake and coffee time. So getting a hot lunch at this time can be a challenge. But happily, we enjoyed Bratwurst, Schnitzel and beer.

You’ll have a blast whether you decide to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber for the day, the weekend or longer. You’ll definitely see and experience a lot. But if you are looking to tour “Germany in a jiffy,” Rothenburg is a perfect day trip. So if you are like me and have lots of visitors coming this summer, consider making it one of your “go-to” cities rich with culture, music and fun.

How to Get There

By car, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is 2 hours and 40 minutes east of Kaiserslautern, just under 2 hours northeast of Stuttgart, and 2 hours and 30 minutes southeast of Wiesbaden.
