Members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community gathered to recognize 11 outstanding volunteers during the annual Volunteer Excellence Awards ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, April 24. Hosted by the Military and Family Readiness Center, the event celebrated individuals whose volunteer service made a measurable impact across the community and promoted the role of volunteerism in supporting mission readiness during National Volunteer Week. Across the Kaiserslautern Military Community, volunteers supported approximately 100 organizations and events, contributing more than 18,000 hours of service valued at over $640,000,

GRAFENWOEHR — U.S. Army Sgt. Daniel T. Beltran, assigned to the 809th Multi-Role Bridge Company, received the Soldier’s Medal April 24, at Tower Barracks, Grafenwoehr Training Area, for rescuing a drowning woman from the Danube River.
The Soldier’s Medal is the Army’s highest award for heroism not involving conflict with an enemy.
Beltran earned the award for his actions Sept. 12, 2024, when he entered the fast-moving Danube River near Ingolstadt, Bavaria, about 70 miles south of Grafenwoehr, without safety equipment during a training event.
Soldiers observed a 79-year-old woman floating face down in the water, unresponsive and drifting with the current.
The river, affected by recent flooding, was moving rapidly in cold conditions, with water temperatures estimated between 50 and 60 degrees.
Beltran said the urgency left little time to act.
“In my mind, it was now or never,” he

said. “If I hadn’t jumped in at that exact moment, the current would have carried her farther downstream.”
After receiving approval, Beltran entered the water, swam against the current and brought the woman back to shore.
Once ashore, Beltran directed CPR as other Soldiers assisted, rotating chest compressions while he managed the woman’s airway. She expelled water and began breathing before medics arrived.
Maj. Gen. Michael B. Lalor, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, said the award reflects the Army’s values.
“It’s that combination of personal courage and selfless service, risking oneself to save another and make a difference,” Lalor said.
Beltran said he did not expect recognition for his actions.
“It was more my duty to try to help somebody when the opportunity was there,” he said.
He credited his fellow Soldiers for the rescue.
“It wasn’t just me,” Beltran said. “It was a group effort.”
underscoring the importance of volunteerism to strengthening both community resilience and operational effectiveness.
“It’s important to take the time to thank our volunteers,” said Nadja Krajewski, 86th Force Support Squadron M&FRC work life specialist. “They’re giving their time, their energy and even their own resources to support the community.”
The ceremony recognized volunteers in multiple categories, including team, youth, family member, retiree and civilian employee, highlighting the diverse ways individuals contribute to the community.
“Team Ramstein volunteers are force multipliers,” said Darlene Taylor, 86th FSS M&FRC flight chief. “They step in where needs arise, support families through transitions and create connections that strengthen the community.”
By providing support across a wide range of programs and organizations, volunteers enable base agencies to remain focused on their primary missions while enhancing quality of life for Airmen and their families.
“Volunteers fill in the gaps where support is needed most,” Krajewski said. “They step into roles where there isn’t always the ability to hire someone.”
During the ceremony, the M&FRC presented a symbolic check representing the total estimated value of volunteer hours to the 86th Airlift Wing command team, emphasizing the tangible impact volunteers have across the Kaiserslautern Military Community.
In addition to recognizing award recipients, the event served as a reminder that volunteer opportunities remain accessible to all members of the community through the Military and Family Readiness Center.
“Don’t hesitate to reach out,” Krajewski said. “There’s always an opportunity, and if one isn’t the right fit, we can help find one that is.”

Accidents happen, and in Germany, they can be expensive. Three essential but affordable insurances can save you and your loved ones from costly harm.
(Private Haftpflicht)
One simple mistake can cost you thousands. If you accidentally injure someone or damage their property, private liability insurance covers the costs. From leaky washing machines to cracked bathroom tiles and scratched flooring, you may find yourself owing your landlord a decent amount to cover renovation costs. Even if you knock over an expensive item in a store, damage a friend's belongings, or cause an accident as a pedestrian or cyclist, this insurance pays for claims and legal fees, preventing financial ruin.
Renters Insurance
(Hausratversicherung)
Imagine losing everything in a fire, burglary, or water damage. Renters insurance protects your belongings, including furniture, electronics, and clothing. It also covers costs if your home is uninhabitable due to damage. This small investment ensures you won’t have to replace everything out of pocket. If you currently have a Renters Insurance policy through your stateside agency, be sure to make them aware that you are currently international to ensure that the coverage is applicable in Germany.
(Haustier Hapftpflichtversicherung)
If your dog bites someone or damages property, you are legally responsible. Pet liability insurance covers medical expenses, legal fees, and repair costs, protecting you from expensive claims. Some breeds are even required by law to have this coverage, making it essential for pet owners.
Legal disputes can quickly become costly, even when you are in the right. Legal insurance helps cover lawyer and court fees and could protect you from unexpected expenses. In Germany, it is especially useful for renters facing disputes over rent increases, repairs, or termination, as well as for drivers dealing with accidents, car purchases, or traffic violations. This coverage allows you to defend your rights without financial stress.
These insurances are affordable but invaluable in protecting you from financial hardship. Contact your preferred insurance provider today or search online to compare policies and get the best coverage for your needs.

SECWAR’s attention to the matter brought in a demand for the manpower, which is where units like the 786th CES come in to support.
Ramstein Air Base is touted as the “Global Gateway,” meaning most members’ days and hours are spent on the flightline, in the office or at the gate, managing the taxing tasks that come with being one of the largest U.S. Air Force bases overseas.
When the work is finally done and it’s time to clock out, they expect a comfortable residence to come back to and de-stress in.
However, for dorm Airmen, that has not been the case for some time. General structural degradation, including ventilation, light dimmers and heating was occurring from a lack of the resources needed in order to be maintained.
“Just for the Airmen to be able to sleep at night they would have to go to their panels and turn off their breakers,” said Senior Airman Aedon King, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron electrical systems journeyman. “Which becomes a hazard just because of faulty dimmers.”
These small things add up and eventually end up slowing down our service members.
After a recent push from the Secretary of War for better living conditions across installations, discrepancies like these were brought to light and the funds necessary to address them were allocated.
A reallocation of resources and the
“Throughout the entire military, all branches were given funds by the Department of War,” said Tech. Sgt. Taquan Kelley, 786th CES optimizations non-commissioned officer in charge. “These funds are used specifically to address quality of life in barracks and dorms for Airmen, Soldiers and Marines.”
All sections of the 786th CES are working on quality-of-life improvements, to include water and fuel systems maintenance, heating ventilation and air-conditioning and structures.
High traffic areas like the base gyms are also being revitalized, highlighting the importance of physical fitness being impressed upon service members. The post offices will be considered as improvements move along as well.
For the more aged buildings, full-bodied rehabilitation of internal systems has been put into the works and plans implemented for further upgrades as parts come in.
These things all contribute to the daily well-being of junior enlisted members and fulfill a promise of clean and comfortable spaces.
At the end of the day, most new Airmen arriving at the dorms don’t have the immediate luxury to choose where they can live. The reprieve of being able to go home and wind down is essential to our warfighter’s capability.

Sturdy walking shoes? Check. Camera? Check. Travel Insurance?
When friends and family come to visit, no one envisions a medical emergency during their European vacation but in the military community, we try to plan for everything. You never know when a visitor might need medical services on the local economy. Whether it is replacing lost medication or treating the flu to something life threatening like a car accident or heart attack, visitors need to arrange health care insurance before their trip.
One of the worst-case scenarios is someone not being able to return home on a commercial aircraft and requiring a medical flight back to the United States. A medical flight alone can cost tens of thousands of dollars depending on the need for medical equipment and accompanying medical personnel.

Some people are surprised to learn that Medicare and some health insurance companies do not pay for health care outside the United States. Some have special rules for health care outside the U.S., e.g., requiring patients to pay their bills out of pocket and filing a claim with the health insurance company for reimbursement.
All these examples have the potential to create extreme financial hardship for those involved if medical insurance is not available or doesn’t extend outside the United States.
Visitors are not eligible for care at a Military Treatment Facility except for emergencies to save sight, life or limb. At times, even those who are eligible may need to receive care in the local community if an appointment isn’t available or if a military treatment facility is not nearby.
Those interested in obtaining travel insurance should carefully research covered services and limitations. Does the travel insur-
ance include a medical flight back home? Will the travel insurance pay hospitals directly or will the patient need to pay out of pocket for an expensive surgery and file for reimbursement later?
These are all important questions your visitors should ask before their trip so they can enjoy their European vacation, knowing they are covered if a medical need arises and ensuring a worry-free visit for hosts and guests.

As Kaiserslautern celebrates the 750th anniversary of its city rights, we’re once again journeying further back in time to the year 985, when “Curtis Luthara” was granted market rights, and exploring what this milestone meant for the small settlement’s early development.
Imagine strolling around a vibrant square where visitors can explore fresh produce, artisanal goods and a lively atmosphere. The fragrance of colorful flowers such as lavender, hydrangeas, roses, bright yellow sunflowers and purple lilac enchant your senses. The appetizing scent of fresh carrots, fennel, ripe red tomatoes, basil and herbs such as parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme let your mouth water. Beekeepers selling their regional honey, fresh eggs, dairy products and fresh fish and poultry galore!
Picture yourself heading home with a wicker basket overflowing with the season’s colorful fruits and vegetables, likely picked up at the farmers’ market. Along with your produce, you’re carrying a piece of Kaiserslautern’s heritage: the Wochenmarkt at Stiftsplatz has long been a cornerstone of the city. Welcome to another chapter in Kaiserslautern’s lively history!
A little market tale
For centuries, weekly markets have taken place near the Stiftskirche in the heart of the city. Back in Medieval times, markets weren’t just places to haggle over bread and turnips, they were the social hotspots of the day, buzzing with gossip, news, and chance encounters. In other words, social media of the Middle Ages!
In the early Middle Ages, however, only select settlements were granted market rights, which were governed by strict regulations. In 985, such a right was documented for the first time as a donation from King Otto III. With it, “Curtis Luthara” received the privileges of market, customs, and ban income, an honor that brought considerable prestige to a community of roughly 800 inhabitants. The charter bore the name of Otto III, who was not yet five years old; his mother, Theophano, and the Archbishop of Mainz, Willigis, acted on behalf of the young king.

Then, almost three centuries later, in 1276 King Rudolf von Habsburg elevated the small town, home to only a few thousand people, to the status of an imperial city. The move acknowledged its growing economic and administrative importance and gave the town, and its market, a significant boost.
The fertile land of the early cloister of 1360 (situated near Stiftsplatz today) plays a decisive role in the development of the rich selection at the current market stalls. The green garden of the Chorherrenstift (canonical monastery, in conjunction with construction of Stiftskirche in 1250) served as a marketplace with monks and local peasants selling their vegetables and herbs but was surrounded
by an ugly stone wall with one entrance.
In the early days, not all decisions made by city leaders were deemed sensible at first sight. According to council minutes dated Dec. 19, 1566, there is mention that the textile flag hanging at the entrance would have to be replaced by a metal sign during market hours. The sign would have to display the crest of the imperial coat of arms on one side and the city crest on the other. This would make it evident that the market had the imperial privilege of special protection. Expressions such as market order, market peace and market right were defined in stringent regulations, similar to very precise military regulations today.
As recorded in various council minutes, the Kaiserslauterer Karcherzunft (carter guild) assumed responsibility as “market police” in the 16th century. In September 1570 the guild requested the privilege to hold two livestock markets, which was granted by Emperor Maximilian II and marked a significant milestone in market history.
The original market behind the Stiftskirche wandered from spot to spot over the centuries, but as the weekly market grew, and livestock sales and annual fairs expanded, it quickly outgrew its old quarters. In 1842, the city cleared the way for a brand-new square by tearing down the old hospital, the public baths, and the Stiftskirche’s cloister gardens. With that transformation, the farmers’ market finally found its permanent home at Stiftsplatz.
Magnificent buildings surrounded the new market square, for example, a miller named Spittel had a stately residential house built next to his mill in 1862. In 1874 he abandoned the mill as it wasn’t profitable anymore, but the house remained until the beginning of the 1950’s.
Fruchthalle
By the late 1830s grain merchants began frequenting the city and a dry storage and trading spot for the delicate wheat, grain and flour products was needed. The Fruchthalle (literally fruit hall), the edifice in the city center in Neo renaissance style, was completed in 1846. At that time the Lauter River, mainly used for garbage and waste disposal, awfully smelly and in poor sanitary condition, was
covered up and the ground floor of the new building was used as a protected indoor market.
The third floor was utilized to house an infantry battalion, while the second floor had several meeting rooms for council meetings, the city administration, a court room and a police directorate. There were also two apartments for the market writer, responsible for market order and revenue, and for the police servant. Over time, the building grew into a popular place for cultural events while the grain market gradually faded away.
After significant reconstruction of the two upper floors in 1891 and 1892, the concert hall known today was opened with a circumferential gallery and has since been used for city events. These include the annual GermanAmerican Friendship concert and the Christmas concert in December with U.S. Army and Air Force involvement, as well as the Culture Market during the holiday season.
Now that we’ve traveled through a thousand years of market history, you might look at your basket of produce a little differently. Maybe you’ll turn your next Saturday market visit into a mini adventure: grab a second breakfast, meet friends at a bar table in the sunshine, or savor local specialties as the city hums around you.
And if you let your imagination wander, you might just hear the echoes of that very first market day, more than a millennium ago!
Don’t miss next week’s edition, another special chapter of Kaiserslautern’s vivid history awaits, and you may find a piece of yourself in it!

Story & photos by Michelle Thum Public Health Command Europe
Seventh and eighth graders at Ramstein Middle School recently solved an environmental mystery with the help of local experts. Scientists and engineers from Public Health Command Europe visited the school for a hands-on learning event that brought realworld science to the classroom.
The centerpiece of the event was “The Mystery of the Ailing Ram,” an elaborate scenario where students had to investigate the mysterious illness of the school’s mascot. Working in small teams, the students analyzed simulated water and soil samples, studied insect life and learned about the principles of environmental health to uncover the source of the “ailment.”
The event was initiated by Lindsey Foulkes, the school’s Career and Technical Education teacher for 7th and 8th grade, who wanted to offer her students more hands on experience in environmental health science but also introduce them to the subject matter experts from PHCE.
“My goal is to show them that science is not just something you read about in a book,” Foulkes said.

“It’s a hands-on, problem-solving adventure that can make a real difference in the world.”
The students were guided by a team from PHCE's Environmental Health and Sciences division, who shared their expertise in fields ranging from microbiology and water systems to entomology and pollution control. The students were captivated by the opportunity to use professional scientific equip-

ment and techniques.
“It was like being in a reallife detective show,” said one 8thgrade student. “We had to follow the clues, test our theories and work together as a team to solve the case. It was more fun than a regular science class.”
Michael Bates, Environmental Technician at Public Health Command Europe, praised the students' enthusiasm and curiosity.
“I really enjoyed the opportunity to guide Ms. Foulkes’ 7th and 8th grade environmental class through a real-world environmental investigation,” said Bates. “It was rewarding to witness the curiosity and intellect of the students. They brought the scientific method into our investigation as they formed a hypothesis, got their hands dirty through the collection the data, and analyzed the results
to solve the mystery.”
The event was a resounding success, not only in solving the mystery of the ailing ram but also in sparking a passion for science and environmental stewardship in the next generation. Ms. Foulkes and the PHCE EHS team are already discussing plans for future collaborations, including a possible field trip to the PHCE facilities.

U.S. Air Force “Keep it in the books” graphic highlights essential documentation needed to maintain mission readiness, created at Ramstein Air Base, April 23. The legal office and Military and Family Readiness Center co-hosted a briefing about essential topics for our Airmen and their families, including healthcare, estate, power of attorney, and financial planning.

by Senior Airman Sabrina Fuller-Judd 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Books are imprinted into our lives; from fiction to blogs, we keep those memorable titles on the shelves. As the years pass, our library grows. The Military and Family Readiness Center and the Ramstein Law Center turned Airmen into ‘perusers,’ hosting a class on individual, legal and financial literacy to add to their knowledge bookshelves at Ramstein Air Base, April 24.
Our Airmen, families and civilians are the framework of the mission.
“We don’t always know where and when the mission will take us and our family won’t always know what is happen-
ing,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Wesley Li, 86th Airlift Wing assistant staff judge advocate. “Knowing that your family’s future is secured through proactive planning for different scenarios, members can put focus on the mission at hand.”
The brief covered the importance of regular power of attorney and health care power of attorney, living will, wills, and different estate and financial planning tools, based on the chapter of each Airmen’s life in the U.S. Air Force. In summation, these legal forms offer service members and their loved ones control, protection and continuity with their personal interests.
“We carry all these documents from PCS [Permanent Change of Station] to PCS,” said Jannette Crider, Military Family Readiness Center personal finance counselor. “No matter the change, it’s important to know where these documents are at all times; they should be kept forever.”
The binding of law and life is tightly tethered, so it’s essential for Airmen to seek assistance before the issue becomes a serious problem. If you have any questions on legal documents, bookmark: 86aw.jac.legalassistance@us.af.mil or 314-480-5911.

by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command
GRAFENWÖHR — The 21st Theater Sustainment Command
selected its top squad following the 2026 Best Squad Competition at the Grafenwöhr Training Area, April 19 to 24, identifying the team that will represent the command at the upcoming U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition.
The winning squad, representing the 7th Engineer Brigade, included 1st Lt. Benjamin Flaherty, Staff Sgt. Jonah Mang, Sgt. Marcus Robinson, Spc. Pedro Cardona, Spc. Matthew Falone and Pfc. Cleopheus Lane.
The squad emerged from a field of competitors representing the 7th Mission Support Command, 21st Special Troops Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 18th Military Police Brigade and 30th Medical Brigade after completing a week of physically and mentally demanding events designed to replicate conditions Soldiers may face in large-scale combat operations.
“This competition is about identifying squads that can operate and
win in a contested environment,” said Maj. Gen. Michael B. Lalor, the command’s commanding general.
“The team moving forward has proven it can meet the standard and represent this command at the next level.”
Over six days, squads completed events such as the Army Fitness Test, land navigation, weapons qualification, obstacle and confidence courses, and a 12-mile ruck march, often under limited rest and sustained physical stress across extended training days. Each event tested the fundamentals Soldiers are expected to perform in any environment.
Sgt. Maj. Mitchell Ledet, the command’s G-3 sergeant major and noncommissioned officer in charge of the competition, said the event was designed to reflect realworld operational demands.
“We built the events to reflect real-world requirements,” Ledet said. “Everything was aligned with higher headquarters guidance and focused on tasks Soldiers are expected to perform in large-scale combat operations.” He said coordination across the formation was

critical to executing the competition.
“One of the biggest improvements was making sure every brigade had a voice in the process,” Ledet said. “That shared ownership helped us build a stronger, more effective competition.”
Command Sgt. Maj. Denise M. Malave, the command’s senior enlisted leader, said the competition reinforces standards across the formation and develops leaders.
“We are looking for disciplined teams that are consistent under pressure,” Malave said. “That comes down to adherence to standards, accountability and competence in the fundamentals.”
“This places NCOs in positions where they have to lead in real time, make decisions and be accountable for outcomes,” she said. “It reinforces that NCOs enforce standards, develop Soldiers and drive readiness.”
Malave said consistency is what separates top-performing squads.
“A good squad can complete the task,” she said. “The best squad completes the task to standard, under pressure, every time, while

making everyone around them better.”
For the winning squad, success came down to discipline, preparation and trust within the team.
“We focused on the fundamentals and building mental toughness,” said Staff Sgt. Jonah Mang, squad leader for the winning squad. “We did a lot of conditioning and running, and it paid off.”
“The radio was the most challenging part,” Mang added. “We had to work through issues and keep going.” Junior Soldiers said teamwork made the difference throughout the competition.
“We hold each other accountable, but we don’t take it personally,” said Spc. Matthew Falone, assigned to the 7th Engineer Brigade. “We take the correction and move on to the next task.”
“The rough terrain course was the toughest,” Falone said. “It was constant hills, and there was no place to stop. You just had to keep moving.”
“We didn’t know what to expect going into the rough terrain course,” he added. “We had to adapt as we went.” Lane evalu-
ators assessed each squad’s ability to execute tasks to standard under pressure.
Staff Sgt. Sammy Rubio, a lane evaluator and cadre member, said consistency across conditions and across the team set the top performers apart.
“We are looking for squads that can perform consistently in any condition,” Rubio said. “The winning squad showed that from start to finish.”
“The top squads were consistent across the board,” he added. “You could tell they had trained together, while other teams had stronger individuals but less consistency.”
Six Soldiers from the secondplace 16th Sustainment Brigade team will join the selected squad to represent the command at the U.S. Army Europe and Africa-level competition in August, where they will compete against top squads from across the theater.
“This is about building teams that can operate anywhere in the theater,” Lalor said. “The squad moving forward will represent the command against the best in Europe and Africa.”

U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, compete in a 12-mile ruck march on the fifth day of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command Best Squad Competition at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria in Grafenwoehr, April 23. Ruck marches assess proficiency in load-bearing movement, navigation and sustained physical performance under operational conditions. Winners advance to compete in the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition.

by Neva Hager BurgGymnasium Kaiserslautern
In beautiful weather, the second German-American Spring Cup took place last Saturday, April 25. More than 500 participants and spectators gathered at the Mehlingen sports field: Germans and Americans, young and old alike.
The range of activities was diverse: Right at the entrance, the Enkenbach-Alsenborn youth fire department and their U.S. partners from Sembach were positioned with two fire trucks. Just a few steps further, visitors were welcomed by a bouncy castle and an inviting cake and nonalcoholic cocktail booth run by students of BurgGymnasium.
The event, organized by the municipality of Mehlingen, the Spielvereinigung NMBMehlingen, the state program
“Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz,” the Sergeant Morales Club, and BurgGymnasium Kaiserslautern, also featured face painting, a human Fossball, and a wide selection of grilled food and cold beverages.
The main highlight of the event, however, took place on the soccer field: Ten German and American teams gathered and competed to win the Spring Cup. At the end of the tournament, the host team NMB Mehlingen was victorious, while second place went to the team of the 519th Hospital Center.
In this year’s All-Stars game between the U.S. Army and Air Force, the Army team emerged victoriously. Beyond soccer, the intercultural aspect was central for many participants. Germans and Americans came together at numerous spots, had fun together and exchanged ideas.
Brigadier General John Stanley, Commanding General of the 7th Mission Support Command and Deputy Commanding General of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, explained that he was impressed by the positive spirit of welcome from the German side.
“I love it!” he enthused about his time in Germany. “This Spring Cup is great! Kaiserslautern is as well and this area is very welcoming. It’s beautiful and the food is even better. I’m really enjoying this!” He exclaimed.
Asked about the importance of events like the Spring Cup General Stanley said: “I think these events that we hold and sports are a good way to bring people together.“
„I think it’s really important that we participate, it helps with communication and better understanding of each other, “ he pointed out.

Two 86th Airlift Wing chaplains were recognized on April 13, for their service to our military members and their families in making sure every man and woman who serve in uniform has access to mental health resources.
U.S. Air Force Capt. Rotini
Adedokun and Maj. Bryan J. Fox of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Chaplain Corps both received a framed artwork of the prophet
Elijah (1 Kings 19:1-8). This custom art was created by retired U.S. Army Col. Rick Roggia. The artwork is titled “Gift of Gratitude” and was provided by the McDermott Foundation and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The chaplain’s compassion and tireless work in serving is recognized by the McDermott Foundation for chaplains of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths.
This artwork is the story of the prophet Elijah (1 Kings 19: 1-8) who is visited by a messenger tell-
ing him “His mission was not yet complete.” The artwork setting is in the wilderness where the Lord had prepared a Juniper tree that had to struggle and fight the elements just to provide shelter. This artwork visualizes the answer and message given to the prophet Elijah from the Lord and applies to all: “Your Mission Is Not Complete.”

more well-known destinations, Luarca provides a taste of authentic Spanish life, characterized by stunning natural beauty, delicious local cuisine, and a refreshingly relaxed pace.
A Fishing Village Steeped in Charm Luarca feels a world away from most any other world. Part of this has to do with the fact that it is located in the province of Asturias, which is an autonomous principality located within Spain. But mostly it has to do with the village’s dream-like quaintness.
This active fishing village is built around a stunning natural harbor, where brightly colored boats bob in the water, framed by white houses climbing up the surrounding hillsides. Strolling along the harbor and through the narrow, winding streets of the old town provides a sense of stepping back in time.
But Luarca is not a tourist trap, not at all. The village has a genuine, lived-in feel, making it a perfect spot for travelers seeking an authentic Spanish experience away from major tourist hubs.
The Harbor-side Fonte Baxa Forest-Garden
Right on the edge of the harbor, visitors can explore a unique outdoor museum and garden called the Fonte Baxa ForestGarden. This picturesque spot, which is often less busy than other attractions, provides breathtaking views of the port and the dramatic coastline. It is also an ideal location for a leisurely afternoon walk, offering tranquility and excellent photo opportunities of the Atlantic scenery.
Visitors will find one of the largest private botanical gardens in Europe, with over 300 species of plants. Varieties include rhododendrons, hydrangeas, camellias and azaleas. It also contains artifacts from the Roman empire as well as traditional Asturian pieces. A guided tour is usually around 10€.
Culinary Delights and Late Nights
Luarca’s location guarantees fresh, incredible seafood. The village’s restaurants pride themselves on offering the catch of the day, prepared in traditional Asturian style. Eating here is a feast for the senses, with high-quality, flavorful dishes available at very reasonable prices.
In true Spanish fashion, dinner starts late, often around 9 or 10 PM. Following dinner, the evening extends well into the night, as locals and visitors alike enjoy paseos (strolls) and conversations in the village’s bars and squares. This late-night culture
means that mornings are a slow start, allowing for a relaxed pace and a gentle wake-up before the day’s explorations begin.
Dramatic Coastal Scenery
Luarca is defined by its majestic, jagged coastline. The cliffs drop dramatically into the Atlantic Ocean, creating a rugged and powerful landscape.
Visitors are often captivated by the sunsets, where the sky can erupt in a spectrum of various colors, from deep oranges and reds to soft purples and pinks, casting a spectacular light over the water and the white buildings of the town.
Luarca and the Camino de Santiago
Luarca is a recognized stop on the Camino de Santiago. Specifically, it lies on the Camino del Norte (Northern Way). For German speakers, the Camino de Santiago is also known as the Jakobsweg.
It is interesting to note a connection to the German region of the Pfalz: a portion of the Jakobsweg goes through Otterberg which is near both Ramstein Air Base and USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. This shared connection highlights the expansive reach and history of the Camino pilgrimage route: a pilgrimage from Otterberg to Santiago de Compostela will be around 2,300 to 2,500 kilometers, depending on the specific route.
The Ideal Time to Visit: Shoulder Seasons
To fully appreciate Luarca’s charm without the summer crowds, late spring (May and early June) and early autumn (September and October) are the best times to visit. During these months, the weather is pleasant, accommodations are more readily available, and the village maintains its tranquil, quaint atmosphere. While the summer months are also beautiful, the shoulder seasons offer a more intimate experience of this small coastal haven.
For travelers from Central Europe, flying into northwestern Spain is a straightforward process. The best destinations are a Coruña airport (LCG) or Santiago de Compostela airport (SCQ), both of which require connecting flights.
One of the great benefits of visiting Luarca and the Asturias region is the inexpensive cost of staying and eating compared to major European destinations. Tipping in this region is optional, and never expected. If you tip, 5-10 percent is considered generous (check your receipt as sometimes service is included called “servicio incluido,” just as it sounds). Expect to pay often in cash, too.

Last time we talked about getting started. TSP, IRA, just taking that first simple step toward building a financial future. This week is a little different. This is about where all of that is supposed to lead. It is also about recognizing that we are surrounded by people who have already been through it. They have made the mistakes, learned the lessons, and if we are willing to listen, we can avoid a few of those missteps ourselves, no matter where we are in the process.
Let’s be honest. When you get to your first duty station, you are not thinking about life after the military. You are thinking about your job, your friends, maybe a car, maybe getting out of the barracks as soon as you can. You are figuring out your routine, your place, and who you spend your time with. It is a new chapter and it moves fast.
When I look back to my twenties, the last thing on my mind was being in my 40s, having kids, and wondering what retirement
could actually look like.
You might read this and think I am about to tell you to stop spending, invest everything, and live like a hermit. You will not get that from me. A lot of financial advice tells you to skip the dinner, skip the trip, and not buy the car. I do not fully agree with that. I believe you should enjoy your time and spend money on things that matter to you.
Because when I look back now, what I actually remember are the experiences. Time spent with people, trying new cafés, sitting in a beer garden, traveling, and shared moments with friends and family. Those are the things that stay with you. That is money well spent.
What does not stay are most of the physical things we bought along the way. If I am honest, I cannot recall half of what I thought I had to have in my 20s. It is gone. It did not matter then as much as I thought, and it definitely does not matter now. I just think about what that money could have turned into if I had set a portion of it aside consistently.
When you look around at your peers, you will see people in very different positions. The difference usually is not income. It is decisions made early and repeated over time. If you talk to people who have been around longer, especially the ones who seem like they have things together, you will hear the same comments over and over. They wish they had started earlier. They did not need to spend as much as they did. They had opportunities they did not take.
It is easy to brush that off when you are younger. It sounds like something people just say. It is not. It is coming from people who have already seen how this plays out.
As a young adult, the goal is not to get everything perfect. It is to find a balance. Invest in yourself and your experiences, but also invest in the future version of you that will eventually leave the military.
A lot of people think they will do 20 years and be set. To be fair, a pension is a big deal. Not many careers offer that, and being able to collect a check in your late 30s or early 40s puts you in a much
better position than a large portion of the population.
But look around. Most people do not fully retire at 20 years. They move on to their next job. Sometimes that is by choice, but often it is because they need the income to maintain the life they have built.
People often end up in one of two positions. They either leave the military with options, or leave needing to find something quickly. For you, that difference will likely not come from what happens at the end of your career. You can expect that it will come from what you did at the beginning.
With a few smart decisions now, you can still enjoy your time. Travel, build friendships, experience new places, and grow through it all. At the same time, you can set yourself up so that when you reach the end of your service, you have the freedom to decide what comes next.
You have to admit, it sounds easy. All you have to do is learn from our mistakes. If only we had listened when someone tried to tell us.
