INTRODUCING: Ristorante Pizzeria Trulli A taste of Italy in Ramstein

“O sole mio” this restaurant Trulli is hot!

This family owned and operated restaurant can look back on almost 25 years of sharing their traditional Italian cuisine with the KMC — even in the same location in the village of Ramstein, not far from the base.

Ristorante Pizzeria Trulli is surely one-of-a-kind. Each family member plays a different role here, but they all greet you with a beautiful smile when you walk through the door or when they come to your table to serve you. This is certainly something that is rare in Germany! The team and their customer service attitude make it worth coming back. And of course, you’ll be back for the food, too. Oh, the food is so good!

Did you know at Trulli the pasta and pizza are handmade? How many restaurants can say that about themselves?! So if you are looking for a true taste of Italy, look no further. Besides the variety of fresh, great dishes, you will enjoy the classy, yet comfy Mediterranean vibe there. The restaurant can fit up to 60 people and it is even possible to reserve the whole venue for yourself.

The meals are fresh and light, like the Mediterranean tradition, prepared by an Italian chef from the Apulia region, of course! All of the ingredients are fresh and for the most part fish, meat and vegetables are bought locally. If you’d like to switch it up, and not just eat pizza and pasta, then try a Parmigiana — a Schnitzel with an Italian twist. You’ll also find fresh salmon on the menu, gnocchi, risotto, various salads and other seasonal specials, like asparagus which is now in season.

If you have any allergies or preferences, just let the staff know when you order and they will be sure to find a delicious solution to meet your needs. Don’t forget to ask about the perfect wine to pair with your food. Whether you prefer red, white or rosé,

sweet or dry, the array of selections from the best regions of Italy will not disappoint! You can also buy the bottles to enjoy at home or as a gift for someone special.

The Trulli terrace awaits you for outdoor dining in the spring and summer months. They recently remodeled it and put up trees and plants around it for extra privacy. In the evening when the lights go on, the atmosphere becomes especially romantic and cozy.

Trulli shares a parking lot with other stores, so there is always plenty of free parking.

If you don‘t feel like dining in, you can also call and place your order to go. Payments are accepted in cash, debit or credit card (Visa and Mastercard).

Now it‘s time to say “Ciao e Buon Appetito al Ristorante Pizzeria Trulli!”

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders visit USAG RP to celebrate Month of the Military Child

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz children got the chance to welcome the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders at the Hall of Champions on Smith Barracks, Baumholder, April 7. In celebration of Month of the Military Child, the DCC hosted a cheer clinic followed by a meet-and-greet event, creating unforgettable memories for military-connected youth and their families.

Events like this one are especially meaningful for families stationed overseas, far from extended family and traditional support networks, and reflect the Army’s enduring commitment to our greatest asset — our people.

Quality-of-life programs like this one are intended to ease the stress of military life, improve readiness and enhance Soldier and family morale, recognizing that supporting the well-being of military families is critical to maintaining a ready and resilient force. By uplifting and engaging military children, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz helps strengthen the foundation that supports the warfighter.

95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion Change of Command

The 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion held a Change of Command ceremony on Friday, marking the transition of leadership from outgoing Lieutenant Colonel Robin Eskelson to incoming Lieutenant Colonel James J. Seale. The event celebrated the accomplishments and dedication of Lt. Col. Eskelson, who has served as battalion commander since its reactivation in 2023.

Before the ceremony commenced, Colonel Matthew Alexander presented Lt. Col. Eskelson with the Meritorious Service Medal for her exemplary service. This award highlighted her leadership and commitment to the unit throughout her tenure.

The formal Change of Command took place as Command Sergeant Major Garry Kisko passed the guidon, symbolizing authority and responsibility, from Lt. Col. Eskelson to Col. Alexander and then to Lt. Col. Seale. This pivotal moment signified a transition of leadership within the battalion.

Col. Alexander spoke fondly of Lt. Col. Eskelson’s diligence and dedication during her command. He acknowledged her contributions to the unit and the military as a whole. Following his remarks, Lt. Col. Eskelson delivered a heartfelt departing speech, thanking her colleagues and highlighting the unit’s successes during her command.

In his welcoming remarks, Lt. Col. Seale expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead and a commitment to building on the foundation laid by his predecessor. He emphasized the significance of teamwork and perseverance as the battalion continues its mission.

The 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion has a storied history. It was established on May 1, 1936, as the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment of the 95th Quartermaster Bakery Battalion. The unit played a vital role in World War II, participating in four pivotal campaigns— Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe— and received the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for its distinguished service.

“When you take companies from different battalions and have them amalgamate themselves into yours, you want to highlight the strengths of both units and encourage them to join yours while adapting to your culture. There’s always friction when that happens. Over

time, as we started doing more Mission sets and conducted counseling sessions with the incoming units, we started to feel a growing sense of pride.”

Lt. Col. Robin Eskelson enlisted in the U.S. Army as a combat medic in 2001 and was commissioned into the Quartermaster Corps in 2003. She holds an Associate Degree in Pre-Med, a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration, and a Master’s in Business Administration. Her military education includes the Quartermaster Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Mortuary Affairs, and the Captain’s Career Course. She attended the Command and General Staff College and various NATO training courses. Her assignments span roles in Alaska, Maryland, Iraq, Germany, Afghanistan, and Kentucky.

Lieutenant Colonel Eskelson’s awards include a Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and various badges, such as the Basic Parachutist and Air Assault.

Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Seale was commissioned as a Chemical officer in 2006 before transferring to the Quartermaster branch. His recent role as Deputy of Mobility Operations for the Southern European Task Force, Africa, saw him lead significant operations, including the major withdrawal

from Niger in 2023. Seale’s prior experience includes positions in the 101st Airborne Division and the 3D Sustainment Brigade and deploy-

ments to Iraq and Afghanistan. As the 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion moves forward under new leadership, the change

serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication of its service members, ensuring the battalion’s legacy continues to thrive.

405th AFSB transportation manager to retire with

When Tyler Nemchick started working as an Army civilian employee, he qualified and was hired under a special program for outstanding scholars. The graduate of Robert Morris University with a major in aviation management and a minor in logistics management was working at a major oil company when he made the jump to the Army.

Now, 29 years later, he’s retiring. The transportation program manager at the 405th Army Field Support Brigade will be just 12 days shy of 30 years of Army service when he retires on Sept. 30, but he is starting administrative leave under the U.S. government’s deferred resignation program this month, exactly five weeks before the Army celebrates its 250th birthday.

“It’s a very emotional moment for me as I transition from the Army. The Army has been the best part of my life. Great leaders, great people and great missions. I’m sorry, but I get a little choked up just thinking about it. It’s going to be hard to leave,” said Nemchick, who has worked at multiple levels of Army transportation, including logistics readiness center, brigade and seven years at the Pentagon.

“And to do it this year — the Army’s 250th birthday — it’s even more emotional. Retiring on the very year the Army celebrates its 250th birthday is really special. Happy 250th birthday, U.S. Army!” said Nemchick, who was assigned twice to the 405th AFSB, and long before returning to the brigade was the installation transportation officer in Vicenza, Italy, for six years in the early 2000s.

Nemchick and his wife will be moving back to Italy very soon, where they still own a home. The retiring transportation manager said he’ll miss his team at brigade support operations, and he’ll miss the installation transportation officers and transportation motor pool managers he supported for the past two years at the eight LRCs across Europe under the brigade.

“I’m the very thin tip of a very fat wedge of installation transportation officers and the TMP managers in the field. They’re the real heroes. They’re the ones that when a young Soldier calls housing for a plumbing or electrical appointment, the van that shows up, that’s them. When a household goods inspector shows up driving a TMP to help an Army Family with their move, that TMP, that’s them. When you see a Military Police Soldier patrolling the community, keep-

ing everyone safe, that vehicle he’s driving, that’s them,” said Nemchick.

Nemchick said he manages the reporting processes, keeps the LRCs abreast of policy and program changes, conducts organizational inspections, and acts a “coach and ringleader” for the LRC teams doing the actual work for each of their supported garrisons – servicing their customers and managing their assigned fleets of non-tactical vehicles.

“I guess you could say I’m the ringleader of the circus of real heroes, which are the installation transportation officers and the fleet managers down at the LRCs,” said the 51-year-old Army civilian who originally hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “We’re talking about almost 1,900 vehicles across Europe at a cost of about $14 million a year.”

The TMP managers and installation transportation officers he supports are assigned to eight LRCs under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. In addi-

Operations Directorate. He’s starting administrative leave this month and retiring later this year with almost 30 years of service as an Army civilian employee. tion to TMP non-tactical vehicle management, LRCs execute multiple installation logistics support and services for their assigned garrisons, such as supply, maintenance, transportation, and food service management as well as clothing issue facility operations, hazardous material management, personal property and household goods, passenger travel, and property book operations.

521st Air Mobility Operations Wing hosts inaugural Mobility Vanguard

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing hosted its inaugural Mobility Vanguard at Ramstein Air Base, April 23-25, which consisted of 22 aircraft maintenance and aerial port teams from 14 locations throughout the Air Force as well as teams from Germany, the Netherlands and observers from Spain.

Held over several days, Mobility Vanguard put mobility Airmen through a gauntlet of evaluations reflecting the core responsibilities of their respective career fields.

Aerial port teams were challenged with events including loading and unloading passenger bags, loading and unloading pallets of cargo and a 10K forklift driving course. Simultaneously, maintenance teams were tasked with changing the nose tire on a C-17 Globemaster III, a knowledge test

“The [Mobility] Vanguard represents our vision for the future of air mobility: Pioneering new tactics, techniques, and procedures to meet the emerging threat landscape,” said Col. Jordan Norman, 521st AMOW commander.

Mobility Vanguard is the reframing of what was once the Mobility Rodeos, which date back to 1956 with the first Troop Carrier Rodeo. Over the years the rodeos evolved and expanded in scope and participation but have always served as a vital training ground for Airmen.

“That’s why we’ve rebranded this event as the Mobility Vanguard,” Norman said. “While we retain the core values and tra-

that the mission of Rapid Global Mobility is constantly being refined and improved across units and partner nations.

Lt. Gen. Rebecca Sonkiss, AMC deputy commander, reaffirmed this focus during her closing remarks to participants.

“Mobility Vanguard isn’t just a competition; it is a critical exercise and an anchoring event for the Global Air Mobility Support System,” Sonkiss said.

“You advanced the readiness of our Mission Ready Airmen with realistic scenarios under the pressure of time. We left little room for error & you set the standard of no errors as a team.”

With plans to expand future iterations of the event, Mobility Vanguard represents a new standard in readiness training that not only tests capability but fosters connection, innovation, and a shared focus on winning the fight before it begins.

USAG RP optimizes DPW operations, service delivery through training

Eleven team members from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Directorate of Public Works united to enhance commitment and promote deeper understanding of the complex DPW mission during Kontakt Week April 9-11.

This marked the third cohort of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz DPW’s Kontakt Week initiative. The event is spelled intentionally as ‘Kontakt,’ the German word for contact, to signify the partnered mix of German local nationals and Americans who make up the garrison’s DPW while emphasizing the intent for team members to make ‘Kontakt’ with colleagues in different divisions. The immersive experience has team members visit other DPW divisions outside their assigned areas, to familiarize them with the operations of each functional area within the garrison’s largest directorate.

According to Truett Sanchez, DPW director, Kontakt Week is an opportunity for garrison DPW team members to gain a better appreciation of how the work of each division affects the others. It promotes a stronger sense of teamwork in support of the DPW mission to enhance the readiness of the U.S. Army by providing safe, clean, comfortable and functional facilities in a healthy environment to meet the needs and enhance quality of life for all Soldiers, civilians and family members within USAG RheinlandPfalz’s vast 28-site footprint.

Nicole Schaefer, an administrative officer with USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Directorate of Human Resources and DPW ambassador, said Kontakt Week provides a forum for DPW teams and leaders to engage in collaborative learning, exchange best practices, build strategic relationships and foster cooperation to build a positive, unified work culture.

“Kontakt week creates a sense of shared purpose, contributing to individual and collective development and well-being through networking and learning opportunities,” she said.

Kontakt Week started at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, where the cohort engaged with the Environmental Management Division. There, they learned about environmental and

energy requirements and participated in a spill response exercise. They also met with the Master Planning and Real Property Division, where they received information on site approval processes and major construction programming services.

The cohort spent the second and third days in Baumholder, the garrison’s only location that offers the entire package of garrison services, including an Army Air Force Exchange Service store, a commissary, an indoor swimming pool, a United Services Organization center, two dining facilities, on-post housing and barracks, medical and dental facilities, a gas station, a thrift store, child care facilities and Department of Defense Education Activity schools.

The U.S. Army has made a $1 Billion investment in construction projects and quality of life improvements in Baumholder recently, including upgraded and new family housing, schools and a visitors’ lodge, all of which are largely planned, managed and executed by and through the efforts of DPW.

While in Baumholder, the Kontakt Week cohort stopped at the Operations and Maintenance Division and Housing Division, toured Army Family Housing townhomes, visited the Business Operations Integration Division’s warehouse, and observed some of the many ongoing construction planning efforts being carried out at the Facility Engineering Division.

Boris Pallares, the Facilities Engineer Division lead, described Kontakt Week as a valuable investment in personnel and that through hands-on training, participants are able to gain a big-picture understanding of the environment where they work and how their individual efforts support the Army’s goal to provide quality, safe, and secure housing and infrastructure improvements to maintain the trust of residents and maximize the quality of life that Soldiers, Army Civilians and families deserve.

“Kontakt Week helps participants understand the unique roles of each division, particularly those they may not frequently interact with,” he said. “As a first-time employee at the Directorate of Public Works with over 15 years of government experience, I can see how the Army is transforming by effectively training its employees to perform at their best and consistently fulfill their mission.”

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Directorate of Public Works consists of six divisions and employs close to 400 people across the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities, including Department of the Army Civilians, local nationals, and contractors who carry out all aspects of the garrison’s public works operations.

“Volunteers promote civic engagement in our community and remind us about true purpose,” Olusanya said. “They fill the gaps in service in RheinlandPfalz and help understaffed organizations run better.”

That’s good news for the garrison’s total force community, as volunteers fill a variety of roles, from mentoring and coaching children and youth to leading classes and workshops, she said.

ABC IN KMC: Kindergraves

From 1952 to 1971 American infants, born at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or at German hospitals nearby, who passed away at birth or shortly after, were laid to rest at the main cemetery in Kaiserslautern (Waldfriedhof) adjacent to U.S. Army Daenner Kaserne. At that time, many military members did not have the capability or funds to send the bodies to the United States.

Four hundred-fifty-two babies were buried at the cemetery and members of

the German-American and International Women’s Club knew of the graves and maintained them early on, as the military families had moved on to other duty locations.

In the 1980’s, the cemetery management contacted the ladies and informed them that the initial lease was expiring, and the remains of the babies would be removed, in accordance with local custom, to make room for cemetery expansion.

The women’s club was determined to save the children’s graves from extinction and appealed to the local Air Force base legal office for help, however they determined

the military could not do anything. The club then appealed to the U.S. State Department. They too determined that they had no authority in the matter.

After the German authorities realized the steadfast position of the women’s club, the cemetery management agreed to allow a private organization directly affiliated with the military to assume responsibility for the gravesites. The Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group (US Air Force E-9’s) assumed this role. The cemetery management agreed to move the gravesites to a new area in the heart of the cemetery and drafted a new lease. The Ramstein

Area Chiefs’ Group now serves as the entrusted agent for the lease and the U.S. Army Command Sergeants Major Association also supports the activities.

The Kaiserslautern Kindergraves Memorial Foundation was established in 1986, and its purpose is to maintain the memorial site, organize ceremonies in remembrance of the children and be a conduit of information for family inquiries. Representatives from the Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group and the German-American Club (former German-American International Women’s Club) serve as co-chairs for the foundation.

Each spring following Mother’s Day, a memorial ceremony is sponsored by the KKMF in cooperation with the Kaiserslautern Military Community and Kaiserslautern city officials. Floral wreaths are placed at the front monument and a candle lighting ceremony takes place in during the church service in memory of the children. A flower and an American flag are placed at each grave marker. The Air Force Jr. ROTC Color Guard leads the procession to the gravesite.

KKMF receives no funding from the U.S. government. The upkeep of the Kindergraves is possible through the generous monetary donations of the local community. The Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group, students from the Kaiserslautern Burggymnasium and the Sergeant Morales Club organize volunteers to accomplish year-round maintenance (grass cutting, edging, trimming and stone cleaning) as well as decorating the graves for the ceremony. Members of the United States Air Forces in Europe and Africa Band also helped clear the area in preparation of the ceremony.

On occasion, parents or siblings of the children come back to honor their deceased sons or daughters, sisters or brothers, and take part in the ceremonies.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 17 at 10 a.m. at Daenner Chapel, which will be followed by a wreath laying and candle lighting ceremony with leading U.S. Air Force, Army and local representatives. A flower and a tiny flag are placed on every grave, and anyone interested is welcome to join the observation in honor of the children or assist in the upkeep of the graves.

Stolen Cerberus XII strengthens US, Hellenic interoperability in Greece

Exercise Stolen Cerberus XII, a bilateral training event involving members of the U.S. Air Force and Hellenic Armed Forces, concluded at Elefsina Air Base, Greece, May 7.

The two-week exercise, hosted annually by the 37th Airlift Squadron, aims to enhance interoperability and airlift capabilities between the United States and Greece.

Throughout the exercise, three C-130J Super Hercules aircraft from the 86th Airlift Wing joined Hellenic Air

Force C-130H Hercules crews to execute various airlift missions and joint training events, including low-cost low-altitude and container delivery system airdrops, static line and military free fall jumps, low-level tactical flight maneuvers, aeromedical evacuation scenarios, Airfield Marking Pattern (AMP)-4 landings, combat offloads and forklift familiarization.

“This year’s exercise pushed our crews to execute a diverse range of missions with a high level of coordination,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Eric Zielen-Ersing, 37th AS SCXII mission commander. “The experience gained through this level of interoperability is critical to our mission readiness.”

Training scenarios were conducted across varied terrain, taking advantage of Greece’s diverse

geography to replicate realistic mission environments. To ensure success, mission planners and aircrews worked closely with their Hellenic counterparts to build, brief and execute tactical flight routes under both daylight and low-light conditions.

“The C-130 is a day and night, all-weather tactical airlift platform,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Chris Gallimore, 37th AS SCXII mission planning cell chief. “Training in an environment like this gives us the repetition and realism we need

86th AES mission clinical coordinator.

“We swapped patients mid-mission and continued training together, which was an excellent opportunity to compare techniques and learn from each other.”

With 12 iterations completed, Stolen Cerberus has evolved into more than just a training exercise, it’s a reflection of the deepening strategic partnership between the U.S. and Hellenic forces.

“Exercise Stolen Cerberus is an excellent training opportunity because it gives us the opportunity to fly with our NATO partners and to take lessons learned and apply them to both of our tactics,

to remain effective.”

Integration extended beyond flying units. Contracting, communications, supply and maintenance Airmen from Team Ramstein contributed to the exercise’s success, working in conjunction with the Hellenic forces to sustain operations and overcome logistical challenges.

“We worked closely with several units from the 86th Airlift Wing beyond just the 37th Airlift Squadron,” Zielen-Ersing said. “All of these units had a chance to see firsthand how we integrate to project airpower downrange, something we can’t fully replicate at our home station.”

Among the many players was the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, who used the exercise as a training opportunity, conducting joint scenarios with Hellenic medical personnel aboard both U.S. and Hellenic C-130 aircraft.

“My favorite part was collaborating with the Hellenic AE team,” said Staff Sgt. Charles Sanchez,

techniques and procedures,” said Maj. Hannah Riddle, 37th AS SCXII detachment commander. “Through this exercise we build camaraderie with the Hellenic Air Force and know that if we are called upon, we can operate seamlessly together from a strategically beneficial location with a partnership that has been wrought over 12 years.”

Youth suicide prevention, awareness

Early Pediatric Intervention Clinic USAFE Developmental Behavioral Family Readiness Center

Suicide among youths has increased throughout the U.S. within the past two decades. Just after accidents, it is now the second leading cause of death among persons 10 to 14 years in the U.S.

But did you know that suicide is preventable? Much like the proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” suicide prevention requires the awareness and participation of all community members.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cite seven strategies for suicide prevention:

• Strengthening economic support. Ensure financial security for households.

• Strengthening access to and delivery of suicide care. Offer education, assessment, and treatment in schools, clinics,

and other community venues.

• Create protective environments. Reduce access to lethal means of self-harm (lock up and secure weapons).

• Promote connectedness. Involve youth in community activities/programs; create regular family activities.

• Teach coping/problemsolving skills. Share/teach ways that you cope with stress; involve youth in counseling, groups, and educational programs.

• Identify and support people at risk. Train community members to identify and respond to suicide risk.

• Lessen harm/prevent future risk. Surround at-risk individuals with support.

The American Psychological Association offers these tips for parents concerned with child suicidality:

• Express concern. Talking about

concerns of suicide does not plant the idea in their head. Be open and honest. Ask about suicide using a direct approach (e.g., Have you had thoughts of suicide? Have you thought about how you would do this? Have you done anything to hurt yourself?).

• Maintain connection. Isolation exacerbates suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Time spent with otherspeers, family, or community members - safeguards at-risk youth from further isolation. Extra time with your child shows that you are genuinely concerned with his or her emotional well-being.

• Be compassionate. Validate your child’s pain or suffering while communicating your value of preserving life. Let them know that you will support them and love them despite their having thoughts of death or self-harm. Refrain from guilt statements that focus on you as the parent or guardian but emphasize how important they

are to you. For instance, emphasize their value by sharing with them — “You are important to me and I love you.” “Do you know how important you are to me, our family, and your friends?” or “How can I help you?” Avoid using statements that are focused on your own potential pain as statements about your own perceived pain might decrease communication with your child.

• Trust your judgment. If your child denies having suicidal thoughts, but your “gut instinct” suggests otherwise, trust your intuition and take further steps to ensure safety.

• Prioritize safety. Use the adage, “Safety First.” Remove access to any means of self-harm (most importantly, weapons), ensure the child is not left alone and make immediate contact with a professional to further evaluate safety concerns (e.g., emergency room, Mental Health Clinic).

CROSSWORD

Grimm, a great nightlife, loads of contemporary art, incredible green space, a coffin museum (!), and enough nightlife to help you forget the coffin museum, Kassel may not be the cutest city in the world. But it offers a side of Germany that is young, emerging, and authentic.

Start with a Great View: Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe absolutely offers one of the best views in all of Germany. When you walk to the top of the waterworks –which include a 1,150-foot-long cascading water terrace that is just incredible — you’ll have an amazing view of the city.

In fact, you might not notice the city for a while because the artificial waterfall, which is literally one of a kind in terms of sheer size and scope, will take your breath away. So will the accompanying system of canals, waterways, caves, and terraces is beautiful. And complex. And inspiring, considering that construction on it began more than 300 years ago. There’s more to the park than just the waterfall, so take your time wandering around it. It is also an excellent spot to visit anytime of year. In fact, visits during fall and winter can seem almost mystical: when mist rises from the water at the waterfall, it feels like you’ve just stepped back in time a few centuries.

Embrace the Fairy Tale: Brothers Grimm Museum

Two of Germany’s biggest celebrities remain Jacob and

Wilhelm Grimm, who were both born in the 1780s and who are better known as the Brothers Grimm. Before Disney took some of their best characters to the bank (Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty), the Grimm brothers were two literary specialists who took a methodical approach to collecting and recording tales that had been passed down through oral storytelling. Their work forever changed the way that children’s stories were told and shared throughout the world.

The GrimmWelt (or Grimm World) museum is well worth a visit. Built in 2015, it’s a quick, entertaining way to immerse yourself in a little bit of fairy tale magic. And it is also surprisingly moving to see some of the Grimms’ original handwritten work.

Bask in the cool coolness of the Documenta

Yep. ‘Cool’ was repeated twice there. One of Kassel’s rightful claims to fame is that it is home to the Documenta, which is a world-renowned modern art exhibition that takes place once every five years. When it happens, the exhibition lasts for about three months, is filled with sound, color, unexpected art, and the occasional controversy. The next one doesn’t start until June 2027. So put it on your calendars. But if you’re not into the Documenta (or if you miss the window), you can still visit the Museum Fridericianum, which is a sort of partner institution, and which lives in a gorgeous building. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and on

public holidays from 11 a.m.–6 p.m., and on Thursdays from 11 a.m.–8 p.m.

For fun, visit the Vertical Earth Kilometer, which is located in the park outside the museum. This ‘sculpture’ is a 1,600-meter brass rod that goes…downward. Into the earth. For one kilometer. Which makes it hard to admire, of course. But you can hover over a small-ish stone square in the earth and ponder the fact that a very long metal rod is stretching a very long way down.

One Unusual Afternoon Visit Before You Relax for the Night

So Germany does offer a fair number of things like medieval torture museums, ossuaries, and the like. But the Museum of Sepulchral Culture is on a whole

different level, and not necessarily in the way you might think. Dedicated to the idea that memory and mourning are natural and necessary, and to different cultures of dying and mourning around the world, the museum presents a range of coffins, burial shrouds, hearses, and other sepulchral paraphernalia. The building itself is also quite unexpected: not dark at all, but rather the opposite. Closed Mondays, the museum is open 10 a.m.–5 p.m all other days.

Getting

to Kassel

By car, Kassel is approximately 3 hours from Kaiserslautern, 2 hours from Wiesbaden, and 4 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
