U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, COLO. — The President of the United States has nominated Maj. Gen. Paul D. Moga, Third Air Force commander, to serve as the 23rd Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy and promotion to the rank of lieutenant general. If confirmed by the Senate, he will succeed Lt. Gen. Tony D. Bauernfeind, who has led the institution since August 2024.
A 1995 Academy graduate and former Commandant of Cadets, Moga currently directs subordinate commands, facilitates coordination and operations between U.S. Air Force Europe – Air Forces Africa, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, Defense agencies and other field activities. If confirmed, he will return to the Academy to direct the 47-month development program that commissions officers into the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force, bringing extensive operational and leadership experience to the role.
A command pilot with more than 2,600 flight hours, primarily in the F-15C, F-22, and F-35A, he has commanded at the squadron, wing, and numbered Air Force levels. His career also includes significant joint and staff experience with assignments at U.S. European Command and U.S. Northern
Command, and he notably served as the firstever F-22 Demonstration Team Commander.
“I am profoundly honored by the President’s nomination to serve as Superintendent,” Moga said. “The Academy has a solemn responsibility to develop leaders who possess a warfighter mentality and are motivated to serve. They must be prepared to lead, fight and win in defense of our nation. I look forward to working with Air Force and Space Force leaders, as well as the entire USAFA community, to build upon what Lt. Gen. Bauernfeind accomplished during his tenure.”
Appointed with a specific mandate to restore the warrior ethos and return to standards, Bauernfeind, a 1991 graduate of the Academy, spent the last two years reorienting the institution to its foundational warfighting purpose. The entire Academy team embraced this call to harmonize the institution’s military, academic, and athletic mission sets and renew emphasis on standards and accountability.
To ensure graduates are prepared for modern conflict, military training was fundamentally restructured to prioritize warfighter readiness and lethality. This was operationalized through a four-class leadership system that instills progressive leadership
and is tested under realistic, high-pressure conditions during training events like the Spring Culminating Exercise.
This purposeful transformation to align the cadet experience with the demands of future conflict sharpens the Academy’s focus on preparing the next generation of Air Force and Space Force leaders, increasing the readiness and lethality of the future force.
“The Secretary of War mandate to forge mission-ready leaders ready on Day One is our absolute priority,” Bauernfeind said. “If confirmed, I am confident that Maj. Gen. Moga will sustain USAFA’s momentum forward, ensuring our graduates are fully prepared, militarily, academically, and athletically, for the complex combat environments of tomorrow.”
He stressed that, for the time being, his focus remains squarely on the Academy’s mission.
“I remain fully committed to leading the Academy and advancing its core priorities of forging warfighters to win, inspiring leaders of character and quality, and motivating critical thinkers to adapt,” he said. “Having seen firsthand the character and commitment of our next generation of warrior leaders, I will leave here confident that our nation’s future is secure.”
Maj. Gen. Paul D. Moga, Third Air Force commander, conducts pre-flight checks in an F-35A Lightning II aircraft during his final flight at RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, May 1. Moga has accumulated over 2,600 flight hours in six different fighter aircraft during his career.

What’s in a name?
For the squadron formerly known as the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron, its previous name caused confusion.
Now as the newly designated 435th Tactical Advisory Squadron, its name reaffirms their core air advisor mission.
“We will continue to look for opportunities to set the theater for future operations,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. David Deal, the first 435th Tactical Advisory Squadron commander. “We will train and exercise relentlessly, perfect the plan long before gametime.”
The 435 CRSS was officially redesignated the 435th Tactical Advisory Squadron April 8, and a formal ceremony was held May 8.
In his remarks during the redesignation ceremony, Deal referred to the 81st anniversary of Victory in Europe. During World War II, the United States relied on a coalition of more than 50 Allied nations to win. This is a legacy the 435 TAS carries on as they continue fostering warfighting capacity with Allies and partners today.
“Adlers, as we mark this monumental day and look into the future, I challenge us all to lock in on warfighting capabilities, aggressively pursue setting the theater, and never accept less than our best,” he said. “The sacrifices that led to victory in Europe 81 years ago demand that we give our all in service to our great country.”
Air advisors build relationships with Allies and partners to ensure whether in competition, crisis, or conflict, both nations are ready to work together toward mission success.
“The redesignation is key to aligning our unit with the appropriate mission set,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Christopher Barrow, 435 TAS Standardization and Evaluation section chief. “While we do have the capability to support contingency response operations, about 70 percent of our personnel are qualified air advisors specifically assigned to execute security cooperation missions.”
The new designation helps eliminate any ambiguity regarding the squadron’s primary role in theater.
“Changing from the CRSS to the TAS helps us better advertise what we do,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Kevin Cunningham, 435th Contingency Response Unit Deployment Manager. “On previous engagements and missions, there was always a small obstacle of explaining that while the unit’s name reflects contingency response, as air advisors, what we actually do is advise.”
As the 818th Mobility Support Advisory Squadron inactivates, the 435 TAS will be the sole Air Advising unit providing support to U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. The 435 TAS will also be the largest air advisor squadron remaining on active duty.
“Rather than deploying in response to a crisis, air advisors are embedded with partners, before, during, and after contingency situations ensuring a persistent forward presence across all states of conflict,” said Barrow. “This enables the Department of War seamless integration with host nation capabilities.”

The 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron was redesignated the 435th Tactical Advisory Squadron April 8, and a formal ceremony was held May 8 at Ramstein Air Base. The 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron was redesignated the 435 TAS to reaffirm their core air advisor mission. Air advisors embed with Allies and partners before, during, and after contingency situations ensuring a persistent forward presence across all states of conflict.

Master Sgt. Carlin Leslie 406th Air Expeditionary Wing
-
The 449th Air Expeditionary Group just took a step into the future of space utilization in their area of responsibility within East Africa. Recently, Senior Airman Caden Goodwin of the 726th Expeditionary Mission Support Squadron led the integration of a new weapons storage space allocation tracking tool.
Senior Airman Goodwin, a munitions operations technician, identified the need for accurate spatial visibility across operating sites and led his team in deploying this digital solution. Prior to this upgrade, accountability relied on manual ledgers and static spreadsheets that required constant physical verification.
The localized implementation digitizes facility needs and provides an instant, accessible dashboard, to give real-time updates for missioncritical needs across the AOR.
“The Munitions Storage Plan plays a critical part in our ability to plan munitions posturing and enables us to logically store hazardous material in a way that ensures explosive safety and regulatory compliance,” said Master Sgt. Brandon Kilburg, 726th EMSS munitions flight chief and munitions accountable systems officer. “It’s a product that can be maintained by just about anyone, and it can be passed down from rotation to rotation. The goal is sustainability!”
Additionally, the tool eliminates the need for manual recounts, cuts down shift-change inventory times, and dramatically accelerates decision-making cycles.
“This tool will consolidate and streamline munitions for U.S. EastAfrican bases, giving our team real-time visibility of munitions we are responsible for in the area of responsibility,” Goodwin said. “As well, what munitions we can get shipped to us and what physical space we have to store our munitions at specific sites.”

“Senior Airman Goodwin brought forward a tool from a previous base and transformed it into a multi-installation tool that powers leaders to make informed decisions in an already constrained AOR,” Kilburg continued.
The successful rollout of the weapons storage tracker is a testament to the ingenuity and impact of individual personnel within the 449th AEG. By empowering Airmen like Senior Airman Goodwin to modernize their workspaces, the 449th AEG continues to cultivate a purpose-driven culture where individual dedication directly fuels mission success and strengthens regional stability.
“In today’s ever-adapting technological age, we need Airmen who can think. I posed a problem, and Senior Airman Goodwin said to trust him,” concluded Kilburg. “He took visions from his leadership and requirements from the regulation and translated them into something we could use to solve problems.”

Many U.S. service members and civilians consider staying in Germany after their time with the military is over. Whether you are retiring or finishing a contract, the rules for living in Germany change the moment your job ends.
U.S. civilians and contractors who retire, resign or are terminated from a U.S. government job with Status of Forces Agreement status, lose their SOFA status and their right to tax and customs privileges on the date their employment ends.
Understanding these changes is the best way to make sure you are in Germany legally.
Before your special military status in Germany ends, you must finish your paperwork correctly and return all your official documents. You are required to give back items like your ID card, ration card, SOFA certificates, vehicle registration and fuel cards. You must also return
any unused value-added tax forms. Once your status is gone, you cannot use these cards to shop on base or buy gas.
Status in Germany also ends for dependent children when they turn 21 years old. If they are in college, they can keep their status until they turn 23. Spouses lose their status if they get a divorce unless they have their own job with the U.S. military.
The 90-day “grace period” allows families to stay in Germany after a service member or civilian sponsor moves. However, contractors are not eligible for this extra time.
If you travel back to the U.S. or out of Europe, you should keep your retirement papers or old status cards with you. This helps you show the German border guards why you were in the country and prevents any travel problems.
If you want to live in Germany as a permanent resident, you and your family must follow German residency laws. You need to visit the local
city hall and the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde)to sign up before your military job ends. You must also show furniture, cars and any weapons to German customs around the time your status changes.
If you want to move your car from the military vehicle registration system to the German system, you will need a “certificate of non-objection” from German customs to show that your vehicle is cleared for the German registration process. Also, if you plan to stay and live in Germany permanently, you are required to
get a standard German driver’s license.
For more information on how to stay in Germany after your SOFA agreement ends, visit USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Customs Office on Kleber Kaserne, building 3245, Room 111 or call +49 (0)631 411 7383 or DSN 483-7383.

A team from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz took part in the German-American Spring Cup on April 25, a soccer tournament and festival featuring 10 German and American teams battling it out on the soccer pitch for the top spot. More than 500 people took part in the event, aimed at fostering strong friendships and a sense of community between U.S. and German citizens.
While the USAG RheinlandPfalz team came in seventh overall, its players helped lead the U.S. Army team to victory over the U.S. Air Force team during the All-Stars Game, taking back the title of best in the Kaiserslautern Military Community for 2026. The Army’s 519th Hospital Center team took second place overall, with the top spot going to Germany’s Spielvereinigung Neukirchen-Mehlingen-Baalborn e.V.
Aside from the soccer tourna-
ment, the Spring Cup was an opportunity for various civic clubs to present collaborative displays. USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Sembach Fire Department and the EnkenbachAlsenborn youth fire department displayed and demonstrated their equipment and offered water activities for children, and students from the Kaiserslautern BurgGymnasium operated food stands selling American-style baked goods.
The tournament was organized jointly by the Municipality of Mehlingen, the Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz program, the Neukirchen-Mehlingen-Baalborn Soccer Club, Kaiserslautern BurgGymnasium, and the U.S. Army’s Sergeant Morales Club.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz chaplains opened a new chapter of spiritual well-being May 7 by dedicating the Sembach Resiliency Center as an official U.S. Army Chapel on Sembach Kaserne.
The garrison’s Religious Support Office gathered leaders, Soldiers and families to formally dedicate the chapel. They chose to hold the ceremony on May 7 to correspond with the 2026 National Day of Prayer.
The event featured chaplains from across the garrison’s tenant units and Unit Ministry Teams and offered perspectives on the importance of a dedicated sanctuary within the Sembach community.
Chaplain (Col.) Eric Dean, command chaplain for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, opened the ceremony by sharing a vision
for the chapel as an inclusive place of worship for the entire community.
“The vision includes space for Catholic, Jewish, Protestant and other traditions, unified in seeking truth, hope and love,” Dean said. Dean also said the dedication marks the beginning of the chapel’s next chapter and that its future depends on continued support from the community.
“The community must ensure no one feels like an outsider and that the chapel remains alive with prayer, song and diverse worship,” he said.
Chaplain Peter Bahng, the garrison’s family life chaplain, echoed Dean’s thoughts on holistic readiness and community connection.
“The chapel honors the legacy of service and strengthens unity across Soldiers, families and our partners,” Bahng said. “It reflects
the Army’s commitment to caring for the whole person and building a connected, mission-ready community.”
The Religious Support Office performs and provides religious support services to the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz military community to assist the commander in his obligation to facilitate the free exercise of religion. Kindergraves
From 1952 to 1971 American infants, born at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or at German hospitals nearby, who passed away at birth or shortly after, were laid to rest at the main cemetery in Kaiserslautern (Waldfriedhof) adjacent to U.S. Army Daenner Kaserne. At that time, many military members did not have the capability or funds to send the bodies to the United States.
Four hundred fifty-two babies were buried at the cemetery and members of the German-American and International Women’s Club knew of the graves and maintained them early on, as the military families had moved on to other duty locations.
In the 1980’s, the cemetery management contacted the ladies and informed them that the initial lease was expiring, and the remains of the babies would be
removed, in accordance with local custom, to make room for cemetery expansion.
The women’s club was determined to save the children’s graves from extinction and appealed to the local Air Force base legal office for help, however they determined the military could not do anything. The club then appealed to the U.S. State Department. They too determined that they had no authority in the matter.
After the German authorities realized the steadfast position of the women’s club, the cemetery management agreed to allow a private organization directly affiliated with the military to assume responsibility for the gravesites. The Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group (US Air Force E-9’s) assumed this role. The cemetery management agreed to move the gravesites to a new area in the heart of the cemetery and drafted a new lease. The Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group now serves as the entrusted agent for the lease and the US Army Command Sergeants Major Association also supports the activities.
Kaiserslautern Kindergraves Memorial Foundation
The Kaiserslautern Kindergraves Memorial Foundation, founded in 1986, preserves the memorial site, organizes annual remembrance ceremonies for the children, and serves as a point of contact for family inquiries. Representatives of the Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group and the German-American Club act as the foundation’s co-chairs. Each year, students from BurgGymnasium in Kaiserslautern assist with site upkeep, cleaning and decorating the grave markers ahead of the ceremony.
Each spring, after Mother’s Day, the KKMF, together with the Kaiserslautern Military Community and city officials, sponsors a memorial ceremony. Floral wreaths are laid at the main monument and a candle-lighting honors the children. A flower and an American flag are placed at each grave marker, and the procession to the gravesite is led by the Air Force Jr. ROTC Color Guard.
The KKMF receives no funding from
the US government. The upkeep of the Kindergraves is possible through the generous monetary donations of the local community. The Ramstein Area Chiefs’ Group designate organizes volunteers to accomplish year-round maintenance (grass cutting, edging, trimming and stone cleaning).
On occasion, parents or siblings of the children come back to honor their deceased sons or daughters, sisters or brothers, and take part in the ceremonies. For a further article visit: https://www.dvidshub. net/news/420783/american-kindergravesmore-than-symbol-us-german-partnership
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m. at Daenner Chapel, which will be followed by a wreath laying and candle lighting ceremony with leading U.S. Air Force, Army and local representatives. A flower and a tiny flag are placed on every grave, and anyone interested is welcome to join the observation in honor of the children or assist in the upkeep of the graves.

Pvt. Robert Palmer Jr. 21st Theater Sustainment Command
Service members and Department of the Army civilians assigned to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command completed a Lean Six Sigma course at Panzer Kaserne, April 13-17. During the course, they strengthened their ability to identify inefficiencies and improve mission effectiveness through structured problem-solving techniques.
The course focuses on applying Lean Six Sigma principles through the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control framework, commonly known as DMAIC. This methodology streamlines processes, reduces waste and improves performance. Built on data-driven decision-making, Lean Six Sigma gives participants the tools to evaluate workflows and implement lasting improvements.
Participants are required to identify a problem affecting their section and present it to a sponsor for approval. A sponsor provides oversight and practical support to help ensure a project’s success. Once approved, trainees begin working on their projects before the in-person portion of the course. This process allows them to begin developing solutions to real-world issues within their units, which they continue to analyze and refine throughout the training.
The course uses a pay-it-forward approach in which applicants identify a problem, apply and, if accepted, develop an efficient solution with minimal waste. Upon successful implementation, they receive course credit and certification, expanding problem-solving capability across the Department of the Army with each class. “Before the in-person portion started, we completed an application that made us really look at what problem we were trying to solve,” said Maj. Shirley Charles, a participant in the Lean Six Sigma course.
Throughout the course, students developed project charters, analyzed processes and worked to identify root causes of inefficiencies under the guidance of certified instructors.
In Lean Six Sigma, multiple certification levels, or “belts,” distinguish roles and responsibilities. Green Belt practitioners typically complete their training requirements within four to five months after coursework. They focus on smaller-scale projects and are authorized to address and resolve issues within their defined areas. In contrast, Black Belt practitioners require approximately six to nine months to complete certification requirements. Their projects involve greater complexity and scope and require the use of more advanced tools and methods.
“The first part of the charter is where they define the problem,”
said Sgt. 1st Class Kirk Bucknor, a master Black Belt instructor. “As a black belt, I’m allowed to mentor them, keep them on track and provide them with the tools and context they need to work through their issues.”
Each participant is required to bring a project into the course and is evaluated on the ability to define the problem and identify its root causes.
“With this course, you have to come forward with a project,” Bucknor said.
Instructors also work closely with unit leadership to ensure projects address priority issues and align with operational needs.
“We work with them and their leaders to identify the key issues they face,” said Kyle Buno, a Department of the Army civilian and master Black Belt instructor for the course.
According to Buno, the program maintains a strong certification success rate.
“We do have a 92 percent success rate from people taking this course to actually getting certified,” Buno said.
The Lean Six Sigma course reflects the Army’s continued investment in professional development and its commitment to improving readiness through data-driven process improvement. Graduates leave equipped with tools to identify inefficiencies, reduce waste and enhance mission effectiveness.

Holistic Health and Fitness is the Army’s program to strengthen and build the whole Soldier. It does this by addressing five domains of human health instead of just one. The Army’s approach to fitness has changed over the years but hasn’t wavered on physical readiness for all service members. H2F will address the whole person. H2F was modeled after Special Forces and professional/ collegiate athletics.
H2F takes a holistic approach to fitness that has five domains and each domain impacts the others. Education and resources are needed to maximize their performance both on and off the battlefield.
Here are the five domains of the H2F program:
• Physical(training/fitness)
• Nutritional(dietary guidelines)
• Mental (resilience/behavioral health)
• Sleep(recovery)
• Spiritual(readiness)
U.S. Army Europe & Africa’s H2F satellite academy on Rhine Ordinance Barracks started with their first class October 2025. It is the only satellite academy in the world. The main academy is at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and was formerly the U.S. Army Physical Fitness School. The H2F Academy is there to train leaders in all five domains physical and non-physical domains to develop ready, mission capable warfighters.
“The key with H2F is trying to bring in those other elements of holistic health and fitness and operationalize it for the unit. H2F expands beyond physical fitness, which has always been a part of the Army’s culture, and adds the other four pillars of holistic health and fitness: sleep, mental, spiritual, and nutrition,” said Brig. Gen. Andrew Cecil, Deputy Commanding General for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs USAREUR-AF. “So, H2F really empowers leaders because it gives them tools through their H2F integrators to help their Soldiers understand and incorporate all five pillars.”
The culture of health and fitness within the Army to meet modern combat is being improved through the H2F program. It empowers
Soldiers to take charge of their overall health, fitness and well-being which allows them to optimize their performance while also preventing injuries or disease.
The Army uses H2F in a variety of ways to help Soldiers. It helps reduce musculoskeletal injuries along with nutritional and dietary guidelines that help Soldiers maintain readiness.
“Soldiers leave with practical tools to train smarter, fuel properly, reduce injury risk, and sustain high performance — both in and out of uniform. They’ll walk away with knowledge they can immediately use in their unit.” Said Capt. Anna Smith, H2F Nutrition Program Director. Smith who is a recent graduate of the course added “A more resilient and educated force means fewer injuries, improved readiness, and better long-term health outcomes across the formation. It helps the unit stay in the fight with Soldiers who are physically and mentally prepared.”
Soldiers who are interested in taking the course can get more information on the H2F program at: https://h2f. army.mil/

POWIDZ, POLAND – The cargo door dropped open, the Polish countryside stretched out below, and another bundle tumbled into the sky for the troops waiting on the ground.
For 12 days over central Poland, U.S. and Polish Airmen tested their shared tactical airlift capabilities during exercise Hussar Saber 26-1, a bilateral training event held April 13-24, at the Polish air force’s 33rd Airlift Base.
The exercise brought C-130H Hercules crews from the Missouri Air National Guard’s 139th Airlift Wing together with Polish air force counterparts for a training regimen designed to sharpen mobility competencies and test combined mission execution under realistic conditions.
Crews flew low-level routes through Polish airspace, executed airland operations and airdropped cargo in scored aerial delivery events, all in coordination with Polish forces on the ground.
“None of this would have been possible had Detachment 1 not been here for the previous 14 years building those relationships with our host nation,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Peter Namyslowski, commander of the 52nd Operations Group’s Detachment 1, the permanently stationed U.S. unit at Łask Air Base that hosted and coordinated the exercise.
The training culminated April 24 in “Rodeo Day,” a competition-style capstone event that put U.S. and Polish crews head-tohead in tactical airlift and airdrop events, scoring accuracy, timing and crew coordination. Three C-130Hs flew in formation over Polish skies while ground crews measured landing zones and marked drop points on the flight line below.
The scenarios were realistic by design, organizers said. For the 139th Airlift Wing’s 180th Airlift Squadron, the exercise offered something no stateside training can replicate; real airspace, real partners and real stakes.
Crews integrated with Polish partners at the tactical level and rehearsed the kind
of rapid mobility operations that would be called upon in an actual contingency. This included equipment and personnel airdrops, as well as fighter escort and Dissimilar Air Combat Training scenarios with Polish F-16s and MiG-29s.
Ten Airmen, one mission
Ten Airmen. One mission. And an entire Allied air force to support.
That’s the math behind the 52nd Operations Group’s Detachment 1, a geographically separated unit permanently stationed alongside the Polish air force and it’s precisely what made exercise Hussar Saber 26-1 take off, unit members said.
That integration, U.S. and Polish crews planning, flying and competing together, is the core purpose of Hussar Saber and the mission of Detachment 1. Training as one unified, lethal force ensures NATO Allies and partners remain ready to safeguard vital transatlantic trade routes, defend critical infrastructure and protect the shared security and economic prosperity of Europe and the United States, organizers said.
“As an exercise host and a permanent U.S. forces presence in Poland, the 52nd OG, Detachment 1’s mission is to enhance regional security and build partnership capacity to ensure interoperability with the Polish Air Force,” Namyslowski said. “In preparation for Hussar Saber 26-1, we were conducting a full planning series with conferences involving the participating units.”
That kind of interoperability isn’t built in a single sortie. It’s built over years of shared training, common procedures and the kind of trust that only comes from operating side by side, detachment leaders said.
“With a very limited footprint of 10 people, we can stand up operations on a moment’s notice and bring in a unit for full flying operations,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Kyle Bell, Detachment 1 director of operations. “It’s good practice for the Air Force to show what we can do with smaller numbers while still supporting the mission.”
Hussar Saber is one of several recurring exercises coordinated by 52nd OG,
Detachment 1 each year and serves as an important component of collective defense by reinforcing partnerships and ensuring the rapid response to U.S. interests in Europe and around the globe.
Behind the scenes, Detachment 1 managed all logistical support alongside their Polish partners, from lodging to transportation and infrastructure; all before a single aircraft ever took off.
That ability to punch far above its weight is by design. The detachment’s Airmen are deliberately selected and organized for maximum versatility, each filling roles well beyond their primary specialty.
“The nature of Detachment 1’s makeup — 10 personnel from varying backgrounds, one-deep shops — is the definition of staying Saber Sharp,” Bell said. “It’s not only being good at your job but being ready for anything. Not saying, ‘That’s not my job.’ It’s saying, ‘Here’s the task, I’ll get it done.’”
That culture of adaptability, detachment leaders said, is inseparable from a decade of relationship-building with Polish Allies and home station support from Detachment 1’s headquarters at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.
“Anytime we need support to make our mission happen, we definitely lean on the 52nd Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base, and they never hesitate to get it done,” Bell said. “The amount of work that our Polish partners put in to make sure these exercises go off without a hitch is staggering. And lastly, a huge thanks to the 139th AW for showing up super motivated, planning amazing missions and making it happen.”
For a detachment small enough to fit in a single van, the implications of what the Airmen enable are anything but modest. Forward presence, even a lean one, translates directly into the kind of interoperability that cannot be replicated from across an ocean, officials said.
When the final cargo bundle hit the ground on Rodeo Day, what the exercise had demonstrated was clear: U.S. and Polish Airmen had spent 12 days training as one force — and when it counted, they were ready.
U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. David Kocher, 180th Airlift Squadron pilot, flies over Polish skies on a C-130H Hercules aircraft during Hussar Saber 26-1 at 33rd Airlift Base, Powidz, Poland, April 23. Exercises such as Hussar Saber strengthen integrated military operations which sharpen decisive combat capabilities and advance modern warfighting, enabling Allies to expand and reinforce their contributions to Europe’s conventional defense.

If you've been in Germany for a while, you might have heard about the Germans’ obsession with recycling and waste separation. Germany uses a color-coded waste system to ensure that as much material is recycled as possible.
The first recycling efforts were made in 1974 in Hanover, when containers for waste glass were set up. In the years since, recycling and waste separation programs were introduced across the country and have become a resounding success.
Over 70 percent of plastic packaging was recycled in 2024, and according to the German Ecological Institute, up to four million tons of secondary materials could be reclaimed by recycling every year.
But how does it work?
What do I throw in each bin?
Germany divides waste up into the following distinct categories, and each category has assigned a color.
• Composites/ Plastics (Yellow)
• Paper/ Cardboard (Blue)
• Biological waste (Brown)
• General waste (Black)
• Glass Unfortunately, these colors are not the same across Germany, with some variations existing between different communities. Your community usually issues a small booklet informing you of waste collection times. If you are unsure as to what color your type of waste has, it can always be helpful to refer to that booklet.
Separating your waste makes life easier for the people working further down the recycling process, but it also means that as much material as possible is reclaimed. It is, however, not always as straight-forward as it seems. Below are some common mistakes that even the recyclingsavvy Germans regularly make.
1. Yogurt cups in general waste: Yogurt cups are often comprised of three separate components: the cup, the lid and the label. To correctly dispose of the container your delicious dairy snack came in, remove the aluminum lid from the plastic cup and throw both into the composites/ plastic bin (yellow). Then remove the cardboard label, they usually have a perforation to make them easy to tear off, and throw that into the (blue) paper bin.
2. Dirty Containers: Always empty your containers before throwing them into the composites/ plastics bin. You do not have to rinse them, just clean out any leftover food out of your to-go boxes and squeeze that last drop of lotion out of the tube.
3. Kitchen towels/tissues: You might be inclined to throw your used tissue or
kitchen towel into the paper bin, as it is, well, paper. They are, however, a of a type of paper fiber that cannot be easily recycled. Add to that, that they are generally not very clean when you throw them away, they become a prime candidate for the general waste bin, which is where they belong.
4. Glass: It is a superhero amongst materials as it can be recycled infinitely. You can dispose of your waste glass at the containers you might have seen dotted around your community. Simply throw your empty jars into
the corresponding color container:
• White/ clear White
• Brown Brown
• Green Green
• Everything else Green
You can throw the lids in with the glass but do not leave glass standing beside the containers if it is full. It can hurt animals and people and constitutes an administrative fine.
Hopefully this quick guide will help you navigate the complicated world of German waste separation. If you have more questions about this or anything else about life in Germany, our GACO team is here to help!

COCHEM from Page 1
has enough surprises to make even the most jaded traveler nod with grudging respect. As a bonus, Cochem is located on a beautiful curve of the Mosel River, which means photo ops, vineyards and cruises.
1. Visit the Altstadt. Cochem’s old city ranks right up there in terms of archetypal German altstadts. We’re talking shops, markets, weinprobes and hearty restaurants. There are medieval towers, battlements, and city walls. And, of course, every visitor will love the half-timbered buildings nestled shoulder to shoulder along a narrow strip of river bank. You’ll find brightly-colored buildings, flower boxes, and just the right amount of architectural asymmetry. Wander. Stop for a drink if you’d like. But just enjoy it.
2. Go deep into The Bundesbank Bunker. Given the zeitgeist, this is almost a mustsee. Built during the Cold War era to host a massive stash of cash in case of a nuclear war, and hidden in plain sight, this is basically an awesome secret hideout open to visitors. Located thirty meters beneath the surface, the bunker is both cold (bring a jacket) and cool.
3. Get wet and wild at the Moselbad. Cochem has an excellent swimming complex with a sprawling outdoor pool area on the
banks of the river. This is the perfect place to visit any time of year. If the day shapes up as hot, make a reservation and bring your swimsuits. If you’re there during the colder months, then the indoor portion –with its crazy slides of all shapes and sizes — is a blast for the whole family.
Though Germany is the land of many castles, you have to see Reichsburg Cochem. It is one of Germany’s most beautiful and iconic castles, and the walk up to it through the Altstadt is worth the trip alone.
The Reichsburg is also cool for a reason you might not expect. After having been reduced to ruins by 17th-century French soldiers, the castle was renovated in the 19th century after being purchased on the cheap by a Berlin businessman who was descended from French refugees. The renovation is actually what makes this castle so amazing: you can experience the full glory of a nonruined German river castle.
Guided tours are available daily in English. The castle also has a great restaurant that is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
By car, Cochem is about two hours north of Kaiserslautern, approximately ninety minutes west of Wiesbaden, and just three and a half hours northwest of Stuttgart. Cochem is also accessible by train.
