Third Air Force Leadership visits GSUs in Belgium, Germany

United States Air Forces in Europe –Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

The Third Air Force command team, U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Paul Moga and U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Stephanie Cates, visited Airmen stationed at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, and Geilenkirchen NATO Air Base, from Feb. 20-21.

The 424th Air Base Squadron at Chièvres Air Base, and the 470th Air Base Squadron and 852nd Medical Squadron at Geilenkirchen NATO Air Base are geographically separated units aligned under the 86th Airlift Wing, Ramstein Air Base and the 52nd Fighter Wing, Spangdahlem Air Base, respectively.

The visits included engagements with multiple flights and shops across both bases, talking directly with Airmen to learn more about their day-to-day roles and responsibilities in the execution of each unit’s unique mission. The immersion helped the command team better understand the accomplishments and challenges of these squadrons, which are all located on host nation installations that support joint and combined capa-

bilities executing U.S. and NATO operations.

Locations visited at Chièvres included the air traffic control tower, the petroleum, oil, and lubricant facility, and the fire department, where Maj. Gen. Moga participated in a live fire training exercise. “These Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing have truly embraced the concept of being Mission Ready with their small teams on isolated bases,” said Cates.

At Geilenkirchen, in addition to meeting with USAFE Airmen the General and Chief also visited the NATO Airborne Warning and Control System Component, commanded by U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Kristen Thompson. “The partnership between our 52nd Fighter Wing GSUs and the NATO AWACS Component is superb. It exemplifies how Third Air Force, USAFE, and NATO remain committed to collective defense via reviving our warfighter effectiveness and reestablishing our deterrence,” said Moga. Throughout the visit, numerous Airmen from across both installations were recognized for their outstanding performance and dedication to the mission.

Top Space Force, Air Force enlisted leaders discuss readiness, leadership

AURORA, CO — Senior enlisted leaders from the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force discussed the evolving role of enlisted personnel in force development, mission readiness and leadership at the Air and Space Forces Association Warfare Symposium, March 5.

Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David Flosi discussed key challenges and strategies to prepare enlisted personnel in their respective military services for future conflicts.

Bentivegna opened the discussion by emphasizing the importance of adaptability as the Space Force modernizes to meet evolving threats. He said enlisted Guardians play a central role in shaping the service’s warfighting capabilities and called for a culture of innovation.

“What we did yesterday is not going to succeed today,” he said. “We need innovative Guardians thinking outside the box, questioning assumptions, and evolving our service at the tactical level.”

Bentivegna pointed to flashpoint exercises, space flag simulations and technical development summits as key avenues for refining skills and improving operations.

Shifting the focus to leadership and identity, Flosi underscored the necessity of reinforcing the Air Force’s Warrior Ethos. He framed military service as a commitment to values beyond the individual, citing integrity, service and excellence as the foundation of an Airman’s identity.

“We are aligning our career structure to ensure Guardians have the skills and experience necessary to lead, even at junior ranks,” he said.

As the discussion turned toward strategic readiness, Flosi outlined the Air Force’s evolving approach to training in response to global threats, particularly in the IndoPacific. He said traditional deployment models are no longer sufficient in an increasingly contested environment and emphasized the shift toward integrated training and agile combat employment.

“The way we used to pick up and go in a largely uncontested environment will not work in the Indo-Pacific theater,” Flosi said.

“We are now training, qualifying, exercising, and certifying together at home station, ensuring that our Airmen are ready before they deploy.”

He began by describing the history of “Warrior Ethos.”

“In the beginning, the Spartans clearly established a Warrior Ethos essential for their survival and the survival of their society. Their culture was built on the mindset that the question wasn’t ‘How many are the enemy,’ but ‘Where are they?’” Flosi said. “This Warrior Ethos, ingrained from birth, laid the foundation for a Profession of Arms and a warrior culture.”

He then described how military services today have adapted the Spartan Warrior Ethos.

“Over time, that ethos has evolved, but remains foundational to what we do today,” Flosi said. “We bring people from all over the world into an all-volunteer, professional force — centered on our core values, to be the most disciplined and lethal flying force in the world.”

Flosi also stressed that discipline and accountability are essential for maintaining mission readiness and ensuring an effective force, citing standards and preventable accidents that resulted in the loss of 47 Airmen and $1.5 billion in assets over 2023 and 2024. He said such losses reinforce the necessity of clear, enforceable and consistently applied standards.

Building on the theme of force development, Bentivegna addressed ongoing efforts within the Space Force to restructure career paths and emphasize warfighting experience. He said enlisted personnel must be trained to take on leadership roles at every level, as operational success depends on a highly skilled and adaptable workforce.

Bentivegna emphasized the necessity for flexibility, especially within the Space Force, where technological advancements and operational demands require constant adaptation. He stated that the service must adopt a mindset of continuous change and improvement.

“We have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable,” he said. “General Saltzman [Chief of Space Operations] often says the Space Force is like a shark — if it stops moving, it dies. We cannot afford to stagnate.”

As the discussion came to a close, Flosi stressed the need for leaders to remain focused despite external distractions. He stated mission priorities must stay clear, and Airmen should not lose sight of their responsibilities.

“We are wingmen, we’re leaders, we’re warriors, we’re in the Profession of Arms. We must focus on our main thing — the lethality and readiness of our force – to preserve options for our nation.”

Bentivegna underlined the importance of enlisted personnel actively participating in shaping the future of their branches. He stated their contributions today would establish the future legacy of their services.

“We are building a foundation for generations to come,” Bentivegna said. “The challenges ahead will be tough, but they will be rewarding.”

Flosi concluded by highlighting the importance of commitment and professionalism in military service.

“You only get one chance to be an Airman,” he said. “We must bring 100 percent to the fight every day, ensuring we are ready when our nation calls.”

Bomber Task Force mission ‘ONYX CROSS’ strengthens readiness, lethality

by U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

U.S. Air Forces in Europe integrated with air forces from Romania, Croatia, and Bulgaria for ONYX CROSS, a Bomber Task Force 25-2 mission over Eastern and Southern Europe on March 3.

A U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortresses operating out of RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom partnered with Romanian F-16 Vipers, Croatian Rafales, and Bulgarian MiG-29s to execute aerial maneuvers and refine combat tactics.

“BTF missions serve as an assurance and deterrence initiative – they aim to provide a strategic element to NATO’s collective defense,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Aaron Gurley, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa BTF planner.

The complexity of missions like ONYX CROSS demands agility from all participants, requiring seamless coordination and adaptability across air forces.

The mission began with B-52s integrating with F-16s for a standoff weapons simulation, practicing an advanced missile release while staying outside an adversary’s threat range. The bombers then executed a simulated bomb drop on pre-planned targets, integrating with Bulgaria for a dynamic targeting objective as MiG-29s provided close-air support.

“The B-52 integrates seamless-

ly with Allied and partner forces through combined operations like ONYX CROSS,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Jacob “Crash” Carlson, 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron pilot. “We refine tactics, communication, and operational coordination. Using secure networks, we share real-time data, ensuring close integration for strategic deterrence, close-air support, and precision strike missions.”

Since arriving at RAF Fairford, the 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron has flown seven missions, working with Allied and partner forces across multiple theaters.

“Operating alongside partners has very much shaped my approach by emphasizing clear communication, adaptability to different frameworks, and leveraging coalition strengths to achieve mission success,” Carlson said. “These experiences have refined how we plan for contingencies, execute complex operations, and assess mission outcomes, ensuring we can operate as one unified force when called upon.”

By integrating airpower across nations, missions like ONYX CROSS enhance NATO’s ability to operate as a cohesive force, reinforcing collective defense and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region.

86 OG initiates peer support program for flyers

86th Operations Group

Every Airman knows that military service can cause stress — we have all felt it at some point in our careers.

In a first of its kind effort, under the lead of U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Sandra “Salty” Salzman, 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft pilot-physician, Lt. Col. Darrell Zaugg, 37th AS psychiatrist flight surgeon, and in conjunction with the 59th

Research Group and the 86th Operations Group, has developed and launched the first ever Military Aviator Peer Support program to help address stress at the lowest level.

MAPS is a modification of the standard practice of peer support that exists within the civilian aviation community but has never been implemented within the Department of Defense.

The goal of the MAPS program is to improve the culture of mutual

support and reduce the stress felt by our aviators.

The initial European Union Aviator Peer Support Team, Stiftung Mayday, was trained by Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office teams located at Ramstein Air Base in 1994, and are now widely accepted as experts in the field.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency began mandating aviator peer support programs in February of 2021 as part of mitigations from lessons learned from

the fatal Germanwings Flight 9525 crash in 2015. The accident was a result of the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, deliberately crashing the plane into the French Alps, which killed all 150 people on board, including 144 passengers and 6 crew members. The plane crash highlighted the need for better mental health support and a nonpunitive support system for pilots struggling with stressors.

The peer support program was mandated for civilian aviation in the EU as a first-step measure for aviators to find someone who knew what it was to live the life of a pilot and could understand and validate the hardship.

Data drawn from this program shows that over 92 percent of all stressors can be resolved just by discussing them early with someone who understands the situation and can validate the uncomfortable feeling.

The MAPS program, adapted from Stiftung Mayday’s model to fit the U.S. military operational aviator population, is designed to improve human factor support during challenging operational or life events, validate normal human response to stressors, increase access to available resources through education and extend existing mutual support culture

of wingmen from the air to the ground for all those involved in the conduct or support of operational aviation missions.

Peers are selected by leadership or recommended by those who know them to become MAPS Wingmen because they are empathetic, capable, trustworthy and confidential.

The MAPS program trains Airmen of all specialty codes and ranks who conduct 86th Airlift Wing operations as Wingmen Peers who will confidentially listen, understand and be a sounding board for solutions to their wingmen without reporting anything except the AFI mandatory reporting issues such as suicidal or homicidal intent or operations security breach.

Training includes two hours of computer based training developed with partners in the Centre for Aviation Psychology and 15 hours of in-person practice in listening and responding to aviators and Airmen reaching out for help.

Wingman Peers act as a confidante who knows the life challenges of an aviator and often educate those who may be struggling to find local resources that may not have been previously considered, providing a signpost to available help when it is needed most.

All participants of the training were recommended by their peers in the 86th OG to be part of the training because of their reputation of being supportive. Upon completion of the training, volunteers will be known amongst members of the 86th OG as Wingman Peers whom Airmen can talk to about life stressors.

Your feedback matters: USAG RP’s Housing Office launches Tenant Satisfaction Survey

The U.S. Army launched the annual housing Tenant Satisfaction Survey on March 3, aiming to gather important feedback from residents living in government-owned, privatized and government-leased housing. Tenants have until May 1 to submit their inputs.

The survey helps housing management teams pinpoint areas for improvement to provide Soldiers and their families quality homes that enhance their quality of life.

For U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, the feedback shapes future housing projects and services provided to 650 Baumholder Military Community residents on Smith Barracks and Wetzel Kaserne.

Over the next few years, the Army is set to invest over $750 million in renovation and construction projects on Wetzel Kaserne and Smith Barracks in Baumholder.

Manuela Battaglia, the onpost housing supervisor for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, said improvements based on previous survey feedback are already underway in Baumholder.

“We have been working on a few construction projects to

improve our housing areas, to include increased townhouses availability and improved stairwell apartments,” she said. “We've also implemented upgrades like rolling shutters (Rolladen), balcony additions, and road and sidewalk improvements.”

Battaglia said she and her team will reach out directly to residents through personal phone calls to help encourage wide participation.

“We strongly encourage all Army families, including those in Unaccompanied Housing, to participate in this year's housing sur-

vey,” Battaglia said. “Your feedback is crucial for shaping future improvements.”

The survey has been tailored for relevance to both governmentowned housing residents and, for the first time, those living in UH, she added.

Lt. Gen. David Wilson, Deputy Chief of Staff for G-9, emphasized the survey’s importance.

“As we learned from last year’s survey, investing in housing improvements that provide safe, secure, quality housing is important for our Soldiers and their families,” he said. “This survey is an important tool for the Army to understand their needs to provide the best housing possible and enable our focus on warfighting.”

CEL & Associates, Inc., an independent third-party firm, is conducting the survey using standardized questions developed by the Department of Defense for all military branches.

Baumholder housing tenants who did not receive the survey notice email from ArmyHousingSurvey@ celassociates.com should contact their local garrison housing office via email at usarmy.rheinlandpfalz.id-europe.list.usag-rphousing-division@army.mil or call DSN 531-2978 (0611-143531-2978).

Participation in the annual survey is voluntary and confidential, with no personally identifiable information shared with the Department of Defense. There will be no retaliation for feedback or comments.

Veterinary Corps Food Safety Officer is passionate about food safety

Public Health Command Europe Veterinary Corps Food Safety Officer continues to be passionate about his career field and is thankful for the opportunities the U.S. Army provided him during his 20 years of service.

Texas-native Clayton Davenport found himself in a challenging situation, when he had to close his own business in 2006, as a husband and father of three without health insurance.

“I had to provide for my family, so I met with a recruiter,” said Chief Warrant Three Clayton Davenport.

Davenport watched a video of military occupational specialties in the recruiter’s office and saw a few Soldiers candling eggs which brought back memories from high school.

“I decided to become a veterinary food inspector and reported to basic training a day after my 34th birthday,” said Davenport.

His first assignment was in Ansbach, with the 72 Medical Detachment Veterinary Service Support.

“I was able to get the full scope of the food protection mission,” said Davenport. “In Germany, I started my career as a food inspector and my main focus was the installation, all the food and beverages that service members and the beneficiaries can purchase and consume on the installation.”

After seven years as a veterinary food inspector, Davenport

decided to apply for the Warrant Officer Candidate School. Davenport is grateful for the opportunities the Army has provided him.

“I enjoyed food inspection from the get-go and was lucky to meet several high-speed warrants and great mentors who inspired me along the way,” said Davenport. “Think about it.. I was a college dropout, earned an associate degree through the military, got my bachelor’s in public health and a master’s in food science.”

The duties of a warrant officer in the Veterinary Corps focus less on the installation but on

the commercial food production facilities that supply the vendors at the installations. Warrants conduct an audit to ensure that the facilities adhere to established food safety standards and regulations.

“We work in the shadows,” said Davenport. “For example, my team and I were able to prevent a foodborne illness outbreak in Guam a few years back. I received a call that a guest got sick from Mahi Mahi which was served at a restaurant.”

Restaurants on military installations need to work with approved vendors. As soon as Davenport received the call, he

to provide safe water for service members at an exercise in Africa.

“We conducted an initial audit at a bottled water facility,” said Davenport. “We received the water samples prior to the audit to cut testing time with the overall goal to get the facility approved for an exercise and it worked.”

Such a process typically takes as long as three months to complete.

worked with the Navy and Air Force installations to stop the distribution of the fish at the military restaurants, preventing more service members to get sick.

“Preventing food borne illnesses is our top priority for the service member and the beneficiaries,” said Davenport. “We are doing our best that the Soldier on the battlefield has one less thing to worry about, so they’re able to eat and drink safe food and water while they’re fighting.”

Recently, Public Health Command Europe’s Veterinary Division, Laboratory Sciences and Veterinary Readiness Activity, Rheinland Pfalz worked together

“Completing an initial audit in less than a month outside of the continental U.S. is an almost impossible task affected by many factors,” said Lt. Col. Shawn Basinger, Chief of PHCE’s Veterinary Division. “PHCE components worked through multiple obstacles to initially audit, finish product test and subsequently approve an acceptable source of bottled water which saves the Defense Logistics Agency over $100,000 in shipping costs from the European continent and provides a faster resupply point.”

Davenport continues to be passionate about his job.

“I started my career in Germany as a food inspector and now I’m back as a warrant officer and oversee food protection,” said Davenport. “I’m extremely excited to move to PHCE in May from the activity, I have big plans for the activities and the food protection mission.”

When asked, if he had any advice for his younger self he said, “I wish I joined the Army earlier. I enjoy the increase of scope of my actual job and being able to gain more knowledge in food protection over the last years.”

Strengthening NATO Readiness through Airfield Damage Repair

and photos by

From Feb. 1 to 8, U.S. Air Force Airmen and U.S. Navy Seabees teamed up with Spanish and Portuguese counterparts at Morón Air Base, Spain, for an Airfield Damage Repair exercise. More than just fixing runways, this multinational effort focused on building strong partnerships, improving teamwork, and ensuring NATO forces can respond quickly and operate effectively in any environment.

Mission-ready teams

Keeping airfields operational under any situation is essential for military success, and ADR is a key component in that mission. By bringing together service members from different branches and nations, the exercise allowed them to share expertise in crater repairs, Fiber Reinforced Polymer mat placement, and vehicle familiarization — essential skills for seamless operations in real-world missions.

“These engagements give us a chance to see and understand each other’s processes, making sure that we can work as a single unit when it matters most,” explained SMSgt Purvangkumar Kalani, from Headquarters Civil Engineering Division, U.S. Air Forces in Europe. For example, “if the Spanish or Portuguese Air Forces partners with us at some other location, they know how to operate the U.S. Air Force vehicles. And the same goes for us.”

MSgt. David McCoy, from 765th Air Base Squadron at Lajes Field, also highlighted the value of learning from NATO allies.

“Getting to work with the Spanish and Portuguese teams and see how they approach this process has been invaluable,” he said. “It’s been interesting to not only share our techniques but also incorporate some of theirs.”

The collaboration went beyond just sharing best practices — it also meant recognizing what improvements can be made. As teams worked through different repair techniques, they faced challenges that highlighted the complexities of deploying in unfamiliar environments. Identifying these gaps was just as important as refining their skills. “With these types of exercises, we’re able to identify what may be our shortfalls when it comes to deploying to different places,” explained 1st Lt. Elena Reyes, from the 786th

Civil Engineering Squadron at Ramstein. “The way that our regulations and guidance are written, it’s written in the perfect world scenario. So this allows us to wrap possible issues we can have on real-world missions.”

Connected through communication

While ADR is key to keeping airfields operational, clear communication is just as important for the success of multinational missions. This exercise allowed participants to combine technical skills with teamwork across different cultures, helping NATO forces work together despite language and operational differences. To help overcome any cultural challenges, 12 Language Enabled Airman Program scholars specialized in Portuguese and Spanish took part in the training.

These scholars not only improved their language skills but also provided on-the-spot translation and cultural insights, helping ensure smooth coordination between forces. “Having language support in the training made a big difference,” expressed MSgt. Scott Richards, from 496th Air Base Squadron at Morón Air Base.

“In many of the countries we visit, higher-ranking officers often speak English, but the service members operating the equipment usually don’t. That’s where LEAP and the scholars stepped in.”

LEAP integrated with the ADR exercise showing that communication is just as vital as technical skills in joint operations.

“Interoperability isn’t just about equipment or processes — it’s also about being able to communicate and adapt,” noted UTC Deston Woodlee, from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion

1, U.S. Navy Seabees. “Getting these opportunities to work hand in hand with other nations gives us the opportunity to see how they are culturally, how they see things, and it just strengthens us as a fighting force in our common interests.”

By combining ADR training with language and cultural awareness, the exercise helped NATO’s ability to work as a cohesive unit in complex environments. These efforts make sure that when challenges arise, teams are not just prepared but fully capable of responding together. By training side-by-side, overcoming challenges, and improving communication, allied nations continue to build a stronger and more capable force prepared for any future mission.

At Morón Air Base, Spain, U.S. Air Force Airmen and U.S. Navy Seabees teamed up with Spanish and Portuguese forces for an Airfield Damage Repair exercise from Feb. 1-8. More than just fixing runways, the training strengthened NATO partnerships, improved joint response capabilities, and enhanced real-world mission readiness. With support from Language Enabled Airman Program scholars, the exercise also broke communication barriers, ensuring seamless coordination among the multinational team.

Medal of Honor: Air Force Master Sgt. John Chapman

Air Force Master Sgt. John Allan Chapman fought until his last breath to fend off insurgents during a reconnaissance-turnedrescue mission on an unforgiving mountaintop in Afghanistan. Chapman is credited with saving the lives of the men who came to rescue his team. To this day, he is the only Air Force Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War.

Chapman was born July 14, 1965, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Eugene and Terry Chapman. He had a brother named Kevin and two sisters, Lori and Tammy.

Chapman and his siblings grew up over the Massachusetts border in nearby Windsor Locks, Connecticut.

According to his friends and family, Chapman made just about everything he did look effortless. He made Windsor Locks High School’s varsity soccer team as a freshman, was a record-setting diver, and even rebuilt and maintained an old Pontiac GTO during those years.

In 1983, Chapman graduated high school. Two years later, he joined the Air Force as an information systems operator. However, he wanted to contribute more, so, in 1989, Chapman cross-trained to become a special operations combat controller. The training takes more than two years and is considered among the most rigorous in the U.S. military.

During training in western Pennsylvania, Chapman met Valerie Nessel, who he married in 1992. They had two daughters, Madison and Brianna.

Over the next decade, Chapman served a few years in Okinawa, Japan, before taking on a special duty assignment as a team leader preparing personnel within the 24th Special Tactics Squadron for missions.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the U.S. launched a retaliatory campaign against al-Qaida, which took responsibility for the atrocities. That campaign took U.S. special operators to Afghanistan to root out the terrorists hiding there.

On March 4, 2002, then-Tech Sgt. Chapman was attached to a six-man Navy SEAL team conducting reconnaissance on the top of Takur Ghar, a 10,000-foot mountain near Ghazni, Afghanistan. Their mission was to set up an overwatch post where they could support conventional forces in the valley below and report on the movement of terrorists in the region.

“This was a very high-profile, no-fail job, and we picked John,” said retired Air Force Col. Ken Rodriguez, Chapman’s commander at the time. “In a very high-caliber career field, with the highest quality of men — even then, John stood out as our guy.”

Early that morning, as the team’s Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter tried to insert them on top of the mountain, they were ambushed by between 40 and 100 al-Qaida fighters. The helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, jolting the Chinook and causing Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Neil Roberts to fall to the ground among a large group of enemy combatants.

The chopper was still flying but too damaged to continue, so the pilot completed a controlled crash into the valley below. The team quickly learned that Roberts was still alive, so they didn’t hesitate to board another helicopter to return to the top of the snowcapped mountain to rescue him.

Despite more intense enemy fire, that helicopter landed, dropping the remaining men into the heart of the enemy stronghold. Chapman stepped off the chopper and immediately engaged, pushing his way uphill through thigh-deep snow toward the closest enemy position. Despite taking fire from multiple directions, Chapman fearlessly charged the enemy bunker, taking out all enemy combatants inside.

Almost immediately, the team started taking machine-gun fire from another fortified position about 40 feet away.

The situation was precarious, but Chapman didn’t hesitate. He quickly moved into the open to attack the second bunker. As he did, he was struck by enemy fire, leading to severe injuries that caused him to fall unconscious.

Chapman’s team reported that they thought he was dead, so in the continuing chaos, they moved down the mountainside and continued to fight off enemy gunfire.

Despite Chapman’s severe wounds, however, he was still alive — something military investigators discovered after a 30-month investigation that included aerial video footage of the operation. When Chapman regained consciousness, he continued to

fight multiple enemy combatants relentlessly for over an hour before he succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, the rest of the team that had moved down the mountain continued to fight for about 14 more hours until they were rescued by an Army Ranger quick reaction force.

During the intense battle, six other men died: Roberts, who they originally returned to rescue; Air Force Senior Airman Jason Cunningham, Army Sgt. Philip Svitak, and three Rangers: Army Cpl. Matthew Commons, Army Sgt. Bradley Crose and Army Spc. Marc Anderson.

Chapman was credited with saving the lives of numerous men who came to his rescue that day. He initially earned the Air Force Cross for his actions.

“John was always selfless. It didn’t just emerge on Takur Ghar. He had always been selfless and highly competent,” Rodriguez said after the battle. “He could have hunkered down in the bunker and waited for the [quick reaction force] and [combat search and rescue] team to come in, but he assessed the situation and selflessly gave his life for them.”

When his body was returned home, Chapman was buried in St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church Cemetery in Windber, Pennsylvania.

In the mid-2010s, the records of numerous Air Force Cross recipients were reviewed to determine if

any had been passed over for the Medal of Honor. The secretary of the Air Force at the time recommended that Chapman’s award be upgraded, and it was approved.

On Aug. 22, 2018, Chapman’s widow received the Medal of Honor on her husband’s behalf from President Donald J. Trump during a White House ceremony. Chapman was also posthumously promoted to master sergeant and inducted into the Pentagon Hall of Heroes, which is customary the day after a Medal of Honor ceremony.

“John died exactly the way he lived — doing anything in his power he could to help those in need,” said then-Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright during the induction.

Chapman’s legacy continues to build across the military. In 2005, a Navy cargo ship, Motor Vessel TSgt. John A. Chapman was named in his honor. On Oct. 26, 2018 — shortly after Chapman received the Medal of Honor — a new aircraft at Hurlburt Field, Florida, was dedicated to him. That same day, Chapman’s name was unveiled on the base’s special tactics wall of honor.

In May 2019, a life-sized figure of Chapman, a portrait and a replica of his Medal of Honor were unveiled and put on permanent display at Pope Army Airfield’s nationally recognized museum. In March 2020, the Chapman Training Annex was renamed in his honor at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.

Air Force Lt. Gen. Brad Webb, commander of the Air Force Special Operations Command, stands with the family of Master Sgt. John A. Chapman in front of a portrait at Hurlburt Field, Fla., Oct. 25, 2018. AFSOC added Chapman’s portrait to the AFSOC Medal of Honor recipients wall to honor his legacy.

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center advances global health engagement

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is a vital military treatment facility that is part of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Defense Health Network Europe significantly contributed to advancing Global Health Engagement initiatives throughout 2024. These efforts directly aligned with U.S. Army Medical Command and U.S. Army Europe and Africa and serves as the enabling organization that operationalizes requirements for U.S. Africa Command and U.S. European Command driving security cooperation decisions. Through strategic partnerships, training exchanges, and exercises with partner and host nations, LRMC continues to enhance global health readiness, interoperability, and health diplomacy.

“As Global Health Engagement director at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, my priority is to foster partnerships that strengthen medical readiness and health diplomacy,” said Col. (Dr.) Claude Burnett. “By cultivating strong alliances, we ensure our collective medical readiness and response to global health challenges.”

One of LRMC’s most impactful contributions in 2024 was its leadership in MEDREX-24, a medical readiness exercise in Accra, Ghana, conducted alongside the 37th Ghanaian Military Hospital, Public Health Command Europe, Defense Health Network - Europe, and the North Dakota National Guard. MEDREX-24 focused on the readiness of U.S. forces in such areas as trauma care, infectious disease management, and medical logistics as well as strengthening the Ghanaian Armed Forces’ medical capabilities. This collaboration reinforced AFRICOM’s commitment to health diplomacy and deepened mutual trust between U.S. and Ghanaian forces.

In Algeria, LRMC facilitated Key Leader and Subject Matter Expert Exchanges with the Algerian military, emphasizing infectious disease management and healthcare system administration. These engagements, conducted with Southern European Task Force-Africa and AFRICOM, underscored military medicine’s role in promoting regional security and stability. Similar efforts in Angola expanded medical crisis management expertise through an SMEE with Angolan Military

Medical Services, in coordination with AFRICOM’s Global Health Engagement Office.

In Europe, LRMC played a central role in advancing NATO and EUCOM health readiness goals. During the CAMO 24 military exercise in Sweden, LRMC provided tactical medical expertise that bolstered NATO interoperability in complex operational environments. In Lithuania, LRMC partnered with the Lithuanian Medical Simulation Training Center to deliver advanced simulationbased training, preparing personnel to meet NATO medical standards. In Sweden, LRMC’s participation in the Baby Yoda Exercise with the Swedish Armed Forces’ 25th Air Force Ranger Company enhanced readiness for austere and unconventional warfare scenarios, with a focus on tactical medical support.

At its home station in the Federal Republic of Germany, LRMC strengthened ties with local institutions, including the Bundeswehr Military Hospital in Koblenz. The discussions and plans to revive the observational rotations in trauma surgery and critical care nursing will promote professional knowledge-sharing with the Bundeswehr and bolster overall regional NATO collabora -

tion. LRMC also hosted several high-profile familiarization visits in 2024, including engagements with the Moroccan Armed Forces, the Norwegian Air Force Medical Team, and the French Ophthalmology Delegation. These events highlighted U.S. medical expertise and reinforced NATO’s collective medical capacity.

Through its robust global engagements and local partnerships, LRMC demonstrated its indispensable role in enhancing medical readiness, capacity building, and health diplomacy. Its efforts have directly supported Combatant Command and Army Service Command objectives, fostering trust and cooperation with Allies, Partner Nations, and host-nation communities.

As LRMC continues to innovate and lead in military healthcare, it serves as a model for advancing health engagements that strengthen alliances, build capacity, and save lives — highlighting the critical role of health diplomacy in global stability and readiness.

“By sharing its medical expertise across the theater, the U.S. builds trust and fosters cooperation with Allied and Partner nations,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and director of Defense Health Network Europe. “This collaboration enhances regional stability, promotes mutual understanding, and helps accelerate alliance and partner integration into an integrated, combined health system. Effective health diplomacy also facilitates the exchange of best practices, and improves our ability to react to crisis, opportunities, and conflict. The relationships we build increase our ability to combat global health threats by understanding the capabilities of our respective medical forces and potential threats. Ultimately, it reinforces U.S. commitment to regional security and stability, while saving lives and improving the well-being of communities across Europe and Africa. In short, partnerships are strengthened through cooperation.”

MARCH 23, DOCU CENTER RAMSTEIN

The Berlin Airlift is still considered one of the most impressive humanitarian air supply operations in history. During the Berlin Blockade of 1948-1949, when the Soviet Union closed all land and water routes to West Berlin, the USA, Great Britain and France supplied the occupied city with essential goods from the air in record time. More than two million tons of goods ended up in West Berlin. The “raisin bombers” became a symbol of solidarity and hope around the world. The traveling exhibition at the Allied Museum in Berlin provides an overview of the history of this aid campaign. The DCR takes a look at the role of the 86th Fighter Bomber Wing as an escort for the deployed transport aircraft as well as the role of the Labor Service Unit. The 86th Airlift Wing Historian Office also contributed with photos and documents. The exhibition is open daily from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. from March 22 to June 29 (except Mondays).

New culinary discoveries and soul food at its best at the Street Food Festival in Kaiserslautern. The Street Food Festival brings a large selection of delicacies to the stadium and welcomes the first rays of spring with a variety of delights. With over 25 stalls and a large selection of street food classics, such as smash burgers and crispy churros to unusual burger variations with confit duck or steamed baozis, there is something for every taste. The focus is on handmade dishes without industrially produced finished products, which visitors can watch being prepared in real time. There is also the opportunity to award a prize to the most popular street food providers. Both a local jury of food connoisseurs and the guests themselves can award the Street Food Award to the stand that gives them the greatest culinary delights. The Street Food Festival transforms Kaiserslautern into a true gourmet paradise. Entry to the festival costs 4 euros at the box office. On Sunday, Apr. 6, the gates open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

ABC IN KMC: Bruce

Bruce

Many of us have seen the Die Hard movies or Pulp Fiction and are well familiar with Bruce Willis, with a star on the Walk of Fame in Los Angeles. But, did you know that Bruce was born in the Eifel Region, just around the corner from the Kaiserslautern Military Community?

He was born as Walter Bruce Willis March 19, 1955, in the quaint town of Idar-Oberstein, renowned for its international gem exchange. His father, David Andrew Willis, was an American soldier and his mother, Marlene, née Henze, was from Kassel, Germany. He has one sister and a brother, while his younger brother Robert is deceased.

When Bruce was two years old, his father retired and relocated to his hometown of Carneys Point, New Jersey. His mother took on employment in a bank and his father became a welder, master mechanic and factory worker. Bruce described his background as a “long line of blue-collar people.”

It is said that Bruce spoke with a stutter and attended Penns Grove High School in Carneys Point, where his schoolmates nicknamed him “Buck-Buck.” In an effort to reduce his stutter and as a type of therapy, he joined the drama club, and as a side effect discovered his talent as an actor. After graduating, he first worked as a security guard at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant and also transported crew members at the DuPont Chambers Works factory in Deepwater. Then

he ventured on a short career as a private investigator, valuable experience which years later reflected in the comedy-drama series Moonlighting.

Big Apple

In 1977 he decided that his life needed a new twist, so he moved to the Big Apple and first supported himself as a bartender in nightspots in Manhattan, living in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. But, his interest in acting never faded, and not losing faith, he ambitiously aimed at a colorful career.

Competing against 3,000 other actors, he received a starring role in the series Moonlighting and became well established as a comedic actor. He won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 1987.

During the height of the show’s success, he was offered an advertising role from beverage maker Seagrams, but declined a contract renewal after two years when he decided to stop drinking alcohol in 1988. Instead, he tried himself as a singer and recorded an album of pop-blues which included the hit single “Respect Yourself” together with the Pointer Sisters. Later he produced two further albums.

His breakthrough came in the year 1988 when he starred as John McClane in the first Die Hard movie. Amazingly he performed most of his own stunts in the film leading to its great success, and further follow-up movies were produced in the following years.

In the early 1990s, his career suffered a moderate slump, when he concentrated on his marriage with Demi Moore that brought about three daughters. In 1994 he received a leading role in part one of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, which gave a boost to his popularity. In 1996 he excelled as the executive producer and also star of the cartoon Bruno the Kid, featuring a computer-generated image of himself.

Overall, he has scored in various genres as a movie actor, stage performer, musician and producer, as well as a prolific career in Hollywood, starring in over 100 films. Some of his most notable movies include Pulp Fiction (1994), 12 Monkeys (1995), The Fifth Element (1997), Armageddon (1998), The Sixth Sense (1999), Unbreakable (2000), Sin City (2005), Looper (2012), Glass (2019).

Ambassador of Idar-Oberstein

At this 50th birthday celebration in Hollywood in 2005, he was pronounced the “Ambassador of Idar-Oberstein.”

Shortly after, he paid his hometown a visit, bought some precious gems, visited former neighbors, and treated himself to a good German beer in a local pub, not being recognized by the owner! He has kept close ties to extended family and one of his cousins is the German folk singer Wilfried Gliem, so talent must run in the family!

In 2006 he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in addition to receiving a long list of other awards and recognitions. His films have

been successful in drawing millions to movie theaters around the world and his multi-faceted talent has made him one of the leading actors of his time.

In addition, he has dedicated his time and resources to organizations to raise awareness and funds to support medical research and provide necessary treatments for children in need.

In 2022 Bruce retired from acting due to a diagnosis of aphasia, a condition that affects the ability to speak and under-

stand language. A year later his diagnosis was updated to frontotemporal dementia.

According to his family, he is in a stable condition and is being well cared for by his wife Emma Heming, his ex-wife Demi Moore and all his five daughters. The family is showing their love and support for him in view of his health condition as they celebrate his 70th birthday March 19.

Alles Gute zum Geburtstag (happy birthday) Bruce!

CROSSWORD

Road (Deutsche Weinstrasse). From now through the end of April, these annual “Palatinate Almond Weeks” along the Weinstrasse offer a handful of villages where you can witness these beautiful trees in bloom.

The entire region joins in with festivals and culinary delicacies for the almond season. Vintners open their doors and invite guests to sample the newest vintage. Restaurants, bars and hotels also offer a multitude of specialties using almonds. So, if you are looking to take a Sunday drive and walk among the pink blossoms, this is the perfect time to kick-start your spring season.

Beautiful road trip in the Pfalz region

The story behind how these trees came to Germany is fascinating. Ancient Greeks imported the tree from Asia and North Africa, then brought it to Italy. In turn, the ancient Romans brought it northward to Germany.

Nowadays, modern travelers can just hop in their cars and take a road trip along the Weinstrasse. Start in Neustadt, which is just a quick trip from Kaiserslautern, and wind south. There, you will find multiple festivals starting from the beginning of March to early April.

We stopped first in Edenkoben to try their local wine made with almond blossom and took a walk in the vineyards. As with most of the festivals in small German villages, there were several vendors selling wine, food and crafts.

Pink Lights

As the afternoon turns to evening and daylight begins to fade, many fortresses, castles, churches and city gates along the Wine Route are lit up in pink lights (Rosa Leuchten). We decided to have a late day drive from the Edenkoben Almond Mile and ended at the Dionysius Chapel in Gleiszellen for their festival.

Scenic and delicious events await along the entire wine route throughout this season. Several event calendars are available online to help visitors make sure they don’t miss any great festivities. Two of our favorites are weekly culinary Wine Walks (available in multiple spots along the Weinstrasse) and the Almond Blossom Festival in Gimmeldingen, which generally takes place in April (the exact date is named to align with the maximal blossoming of the trees, so check online).

Pfälzer Mandelpfad

If you have several hours

(or possibly the opportunity to make it a weekend trip), there is a route called the “Pfälzer Mandelpfad” that you can follow. It runs for about 50 miles, stretching between Bad Dürkheim all the way down to Bad Bergzabern, right on the French border. Almond trees have been cultivated in this area for centuries, and to date, you can find all sorts of treats made with almonds from sweets to liqueurs to pralines.

Other villages on the Wine Route

Some of the wine route’s most picturesque villages and good bets for blossom-

spotting include Deidesheim, Neustadt, Maikammer, St. Martin, Kirrweiler, Edenkoben and Bad Bergzabern. There are also numerous tours during the days and evenings along the Palatinate Almond Trail. This very special hiking trail runs through the land of almond blossom across 77 kilometers.

Rosa Leuchten tours

During Rosa Leuchten, there are many different tour options available, including 4 day and 8 day tours, bike tours and walking tours. You can even plant your own almond tree! Visit Mandelblüte in der Pfalz (https:// www.mandelbluete-pfalz.de/) or German Wine Route (https:// www.german-wineroute.com/) for more information on events, tours and directions.

How to get there

The German Wine Route (Deutsche Weinstrasse) is Germany’s oldest tourist wine route. Established in 1935, it is located in the Palatinate region of the state RhinelandPalatinate.

Though running through several villages, Neustadt is a great starting point. It is just 50 minutes from Kaiserslautern, 1 hour from Wiesbaden and 1.5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
