Face of Defense: Aeromedical nurse practitioner bridges medicine, mission Story & photos by Airman 1st Class Amanda Alvarez 325th Fighter Wing The small, brain-shaped coin felt heavier than its size, a quiet symbol of gratitude that brought tears as she recalled its meaning. It was a gift from an Air Force Airman she once treated for lymphoma, presented to her after he not only completed treatment, but beat the cancer. He honored his doctor by coining her — a tribute usually performed by senior leaders to recognize Airmen. The gesture represented the trust placed in her during one of the most difficult moments of the Airman’s life. “This is my favorite coin, and it reminds me how special this [moment] was for both of us,” said Air Force Maj. Elizabeth Kuss, 325th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron flight medicine flight commander. “I don’t do this job to be thanked, but it was so special to be thanked in this way.” The experience was shaped by a path she once believed she would never take; one she believed was not for her. Wanting more Raised as an “Army brat” and surrounded by military service, Kuss had long resisted joining the military. Her father served for 30 years in the Army and for another 20 as a civilian supporting Army aviation, while her brother joined the Air Force in 2000. “I was the one saying, 'I'm not joining the military,’” she said, laughing. “Turns out my dad was right.” By 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic and nearing a milestone birthday, Kuss said she felt professionally stagnant. “I wanted more — personal growth and professional growth,” she said. “I was asking myself, ‘Is this it?’” The need for a new challenge is what drew her to military medicine. After nearly two decades working in emergency rooms in Alabama, Kuss became an Air Force nurse practitioner at 40 years old, trading night shifts and a familiar hospital system for operational medicine, intense training and a role few in uniform have ever filled. “I knew this was not going to be easy. This

was not going to be a cakewalk kind of job,” Kuss said. “But this is my dream job. I get to take care of the most amazing people while doing the things I love.” A turning point in Alaska An Airman in a dress uniform smiles for a photo, with an American flag in the background. Inspired by Air Force nurse practitioners who were deploying, leading and operating far beyond the clinic, Kuss commissioned directly into the Air Force in 2021 as a family nurse practitioner. She was assigned to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, which quickly became a turning point. Within months, Kuss attended military mountain medicine training, climbing and rappelling with litters, navigating austere terrain and learning trauma care under simulated combat conditions. “They made it as real as possible and that was the moment I thought, ‘This is what I signed up for,’” she said. “You don’t get to do this [training] on the outside. It really solidi-

fied my decision to do this.” After two years in active-duty medicine, she was selected for the Air Force’s aeromedical nurse practitioner training pipeline, a career field that was created in 2019 to bridge the gap between medicine and mission. The pipeline included aerospace physiology, altitude chamber exposure, centrifuge training and flight operations. “The goal is to have a better understanding of what aviators and defenders go through,” Kuss said. “Does this [medical] condition impact their ability to fly? Their ability to see screens? If I understand what duties they’re undergoing, I can better understand how that might impact them medically.” Beyond the usual care As an aeromedical nurse practitioner, Kuss does far more than traditional primary care. Her role spans occupational health, deployment clearances, public health and flight-related medical emergencies. Between these responsibilities, she also manages administrative tasks such as reviewing profiles, signing medical clearances and advising commanders on readiness risks. “It’s always a balance,” she said. “You’re taking care of someone as a person, but you're also responsible for military readiness and mission safety, and asking yourself, ‘Is it going to compromise the mission because they aren’t able to perform their duties?’” Trust between the patient and provider sits at the core of Kuss’ work as one of roughly 50 aeromedical nurse practitioners across the Air Force. In April 2024, she arrived at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, as the base’s first aeromedical nurse practitioner, stepping into a role that brings both opportunity and pressure. “I want to show that we’re value-added,” she said. “I want to show that we support the mission and that as a [career field], we’re needed. When I leave, I want them to

say, ‘We need another one.’” As an emerging career field, Kuss said aeromedical nurse practitioners often face misconceptions, including being underutilized or misunderstood. “People don’t always know what we can do,” she said. “That knowledge gap is probably the biggest barrier. With more exposure and time on the lines, we can break those barriers and learn how we fit within a squadron and how we can be an asset to the team.” Making an impact For those who work with her, her impact and influence are already clear. “She’s everything you’d want in a provider and a flight commander,” said Air Force Tech. Sgt. Joseph Smith, 325th OMRS flight operational medical technician. “She listens. She’s empathetic. She treats everyone like a person first.” Smith said Kuss’ aeromedical expertise has been especially valuable during in-flight emergencies involving F-35A Lightning II pilots experiencing hypoxia-like symptoms. “Her being an aeromedical nurse practitioner makes all the difference sometimes,” Smith said. “She already knows what’s going on when it comes to altitude, aircraft systems, all of it. She’s always clocked in with the engine running. “She’s big on readiness because she knows if we don’t take care of pilots and maintainers, the mission doesn’t happen,” Smith continued. “She sets the standard — anyone who comes into this role should look at her and say, “That’s what an aeromedical nurse practitioner should be.’” Looking ahead, Kuss hopes to deploy, support humanitarian missions and continue shaping a career field still defining itself. “I’ve only been in five years, and I’ve already done things I never imagined,” she said. “And there’s still so much more to do, so many more boxes I want to check off. I’m ready for whatever comes my way.”

US Air Force Nurse overcomes challenges, promoted to Lieutenant Colonel by Kirk Frady Medical Readiness Command, Europe Balancing a demanding military career with motherhood is a challenge, but for U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Savannah Jumpp, a mother of four with one on the way, it is a journey marked by excellence and a testament to her perseverance. Maj. Jumpp was promoted to the rank of Lt. Col. during at ceremony held at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Feb. 26. Throughout her successful career, Jumpp has relied on the unwavering support of her family, friends and mentors. “I appreciate my family and friends for supporting me throughout my career, especially my mother, who no matter where I was stationed, has been at every one of my child’s births,” she said. Her dedication was recently recognized when she was named the winner of the 2024 and 2025 U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Medical Service Outstanding Achievement in Nursing Force Development Award. Her recent promotion and accolades highlight a career defined by leadership and a commitment to service. “We celebrate the remarkable achievements and promotion of a dedicated nurse, wife, mother, sister and outstanding Air Force officer who embodies the very essence of selfless service,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, Commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and director of Defense Health Network Europe. “This promotion is a testament to her demonstrated potential, hard work, dedication, and her unwav-

ering commitment to excellence.” Jumpp currently serves as the Executive Officer to the Director for the Defense Health Network – Europe at Sembach, Germany. In this role, she is a key advisor to senior leadership, synchronizing strategic priorities across ten military treatment facilities in the European theater. Her path to this senior position began in Austin, Texas where she was a 2004 graduate of Manor High School. Jumpp’s military journey

started out of a need to fund her education. “I decided to join the military through ROTC at Howard University, Detachment 130, because I did not know how I was going to pay for school,” Jumpp said. That decision led to a commission in the U.S. Air Force in 2009, after she graduated as a distinguished graduate and valedictorian of the Howard University School of Nursing. She continued

her education, earning a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Executive Leadership from The Ohio State University in 2023. Before her current assignment, Jumpp was the Director of Hospital Education for the 86th Medical Squadron at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. There, she led a joint-service team dedicated to advancing education and readiness for over 4,000 personnel at the Department of War’s only Role 4/ Level II Trauma Center outside the

continental United States. According to Jumpp, her secret to success in life involves keeping God at the forefront of her life and navigating different personalities, staying abreast of what’s going on, and learning how to influence people. Jumpp departs Europe this summer for Canon Air Force Base New Mexico where she will assume her new duties as the Chief Nurse for the 27th Special Operations Medical Group.

From private to sustainment leader: Davis comes full circle in Europe Story & photo by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command When Command Sgt. Maj. Damon Davis first arrived in Germany as a young private, the experience was overwhelming. Fresh out of Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and far from his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina, he was adjusting to a new country, a new unit and the demands of military life. “I was homesick my first couple of months,” Davis recalled. “But once I started learning the mission and understanding my role and responsibilities, I got out more and became comfortable.” Davis enlisted in the Army as an motor transport operator, a role that placed him at the center of transportation and sustainment operations supporting units across the theater. More than two decades later, Davis returned to Europe as a senior enlisted leader with a career shaped by transportation operations, airborne assignments, drill sergeant duty and strategic mobility missions. On Feb. 5, the 21st Special Troops Battalion conducted a transfer of responsibility ceremony at Panzer Kaserne in Kaiserslautern. During the ceremony, Davis relinquished responsibility to Sgt. Maj. Raymond Blas, marking the latest transition in a career closely tied to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command mission. Davis’ earliest assignments introduced him to the scale of theater sustainment operations. Serving under the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, he supported transportation missions moving cargo and mail across Germany and throughout the theater. “The 21st TSC supported every-

U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Damon Davis is pinned with command sergeant major rank by his mother and sister during a lateral promotion ceremony at Millrinder Hall on Panzer Kaserne in Kaiserslautern, Feb. 6. The ceremony recognizes Davis’ advancement from sergeant major to command sergeant major after enlisting in the Army in November 1999 as a motor transport operator and serving more than 20 years in transportation and sustainment units. He previously served as acting command sergeant major for the 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command.

thing logistical and sustainment in theater,” he said. “We handled general cargo and mail across Germany and even into Africa.” As a junior Soldier, Davis conducted long-haul transportation missions across Europe in heavy vehicles. Following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, safety protocols across the Army evolved. “Early on, we were driving long missions across Europe on our own,” Davis said. “After 9/11, the Army looked at the bigger picture. For safety reasons, we started having truck commanders on every mission.” Despite changes, over the years Davis said the command’s mission has remained consistent. “The 21st is still the lead when it comes to moving supplies across the theater,” he said. Davis credits several early mentors with shaping his leadership foundation. As a private, then-1st Sgt. Reginald Thompson and Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Ingram helped guide his development, while later leaders reinforced the standards and discipline that shaped his career. His perspective shifted when he became a noncommissioned officer. “As a sergeant, I knew my role was about taking care of Soldiers,” he said. “I wanted to give them the tools I learned early in my career.” Assignments with the 82nd Airborne Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade further shaped his leadership approach. “The 82nd conducted missions worldwide,” Davis said. “The 173rd had a major impact

in Europe, supporting the theater at the brigade level.” His drill sergeant time reinforced the importance of fundamentals. “Standards and discipline are the tip of the spear,” Davis said. “Those basics make Soldiers successful.” Davis has served three tours in Germany and one in Italy, including three assignments under the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. Those experiences gave him a deeper understanding of sustainment operations supporting U.S. and rotational forces across Europe. “You’re not just supporting one theater,” Davis said. “You’re ensuring rotational units have what they need when they arrive and helping them redeploy to their home station.” After decades in transportation and logistics, Davis said sustainment remains fundamental to

mission success. “Logistics is the lifeline of everything that has to happen,” he said. “From Class I [food, rations, and water] through Class IX [repairs, components] everyone depends on sustainment.” As a command sergeant major responsible for hundreds of Soldiers, Davis said leadership requires balancing mission demands with the well-being of the formation. “You take care of the mission, take care of your Soldiers, take care of your family, and take care of yourself,” he said. Looking back on his career, Davis defines success through the leaders he has helped develop. “My success wasn’t mine alone,” he said. “It was built by the Soldiers, civilians and mentors who

guided me along the way.” Remembering his own arrival in Germany as a homesick private, Davis now shares advice with Soldiers experiencing that same transition. “Talk with the battle buddies who arrived before you,” he said. “Most Soldiers go through the same experience and will help welcome you to the unit. Staying connected with family and friends back home also helps.” From a homesick private stepping onto foreign soil to a command sergeant major sustaining readiness across the European theater, Davis’ career reflects discipline, mentorship and an enduring commitment to Soldiers and mission. “No mission can be accomplished without sustainment,” he said.

Throughout the decades, USO-certified therapy dogs have been instrumental in supporting the mental, physical and emotional health of warfighters as they deal with the stressors of a difficult job. Strengthening those needs maintains readiness and stability across the force. Therapy dogs and their handlers play a critical role within the military community, providing stress reduction and a morale boost that few others can offer, so it’s only fair they get recognition for their outstanding contributions. Voting opened for the 2025 USO Canine Volunteer of the Year award, which is administered through the Canine USO Program. Airlifter of the Month: Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Felder by Airman 1st Class Joseph Curzi 86th Airlift Wing For Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Felder, leadership didn’t begin in the Air Force. It began at home. As the oldest of seven children growing up in Long Beach, California, Felder learned early that responsibility was not optional. “I’ve always had this drive to look out for people, especially my siblings,” Felder said. “When you’re the oldest, you’re the example and when you mess up, everybody sees it, but when you do right, they follow that too.” That foundation shapes how he leads Airmen at the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron. Today, Felder serves as the supervisor of the training, validation and operations section, where he tracks and manages readiness requirements for Airmen responsible for moving personnel and cargo across one of the Air Force’s busiest installations. From career development courses, certifications to road permits and heavy vehicle qualifications, if it involves wheels on Ramstein, Felder ensures Airmen are ready. “I track everybody’s readiness,” he said. “Vehicle qualifications, flightline certifications, installation permits, anything that deals with moving people or cargo, that’s my lane.” For Felder, readiness extends beyond checklists and qualifica-

tions; it extends to people. Felder joined the Air Force in 2018 after starting college, becoming the first in his family to graduate high school, the first to earn a degree, the first to join the military and the first to leave the United States. He completed his bachelor’s degree through American Military University in 2019. Since then, he has served at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; Aviano Air Base, Italy; Osan Air Base, South Korea; and now Ramstein Air Base. Across four duty stations and multiple major commands, one theme has remained constant: He leads the way he was raised, like a big brother. “When Airmen come in, they’re away from home for the first time. Different country, different culture, different time zone,” Felder said. “They don’t know us yet, we're strangers and sometimes that can be intimidating.” When two new Airmen recently faced personal challenges far from home, Felder stepped in - not because he was told to, but because he felt it was his responsibility. “They trusted me,” he said. “In a volatile state marked by stress, confusion and fear, they brought their problems to me, and that takes a lot.” He helped them navigate resources, steady their footing and refocus on qualification requirements. “What makes Staff Sgt. Felder stand out is his ability to connect

with our Airmen,” said 1st Lt. Ryan Tingle, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron ground transportation flight commander. “He consistently puts their needs first, whether he is guiding them through personal hardships or teaching them financial stability, his dedication and selflessness make him an invaluable asset to our flight and the Air Force.” In 2020, while deployed, Felder faced one of the most difficult moments of his life. A close friend who had helped raise him passed away from cancer. He was unable to return home immediately to say goodbye. “I wasn’t able to see her properly,” he said. “She played a big role in raising me.” Instead of breaking him, the loss reshaped him. Felder leaned on mentors, his first sergeant, the Chaplain Corps and the Military and Family Life Counseling Program. “The Shirt at that time was critical to my well-being,” he said. “I had a good support system.” The experience reinforced what he already believed: Adversity is something to learn from, not be defined by. “I don’t really see adversity as adversity,” Felder said. “I see it as learning steps; there are lessons in everything.” He focused on gratitude that he was eventually able to visit home, pay his respects and return to the mission with renewed clarity.

Felder manages career development courses, certifications to road permits, heavy vehicle qualifications and readiness requirements for VRS Airmen.

That year strengthened his desire to one day wear the diamond of a first sergeant. “Just by nature, I care for people,” he said. “Life happens. I want to be in a position where I can help

Airmen navigate that.” From big brother to noncom missioned officer, that philosophy is reflected in how he advances through his Air Force career and shows up daily for Airmen.

ABC IN KMC: Happy Bear Day! by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs We’re all familiar with those soft, fruity, irresistibly sweet little bears that Germans lovingly call “Goldbären.” Few candies have achieved the global affection and cultural staying power of Haribo Goldbears. Since their introduction in 1922, these colorful little gummies have become a symbol of childhood joy, playful indulgence, and German confectionery craftsmanship. Their story, however, begins even earlier with a young candy maker in Bonn and a simple dream of creating something new. Haribo was founded in 1920 by Hans Riegel, who named his company by combining the first two letters of his first and last name with the first two letters of his hometown: HAns RIegel BOnn. Working out of a small shed with little more than a sack of sugar and a copper kettle, Riegel initially produced items such as licorice and pastilles. But he soon felt compelled to invent a sweet that would stand apart from the rest. On March 14, 1922, that idea took shape — literally. Inspired by the dancing bears that once performed at fairs, Riegel created the first gummy bear, a four‑centimeter-tall, somewhat tough, chewy candy he called the “Dancing Bear.” His wife packaged the treats by hand, and Riegel sold them to local shops for a penny a pair. At first, the Dancing Bears were far from a sensation, his other “pharmaceutical” sweets sold better, even being shipped to soldiers during World War II. After the war, Riegel’s sons took over the business and transformed their father’s modest creation. Hans Riegel Jr. refined the recipe, softened the texture, and shrank the bear into the friendlier, more flavorful form we recognize today. In 1960, the Dancing Bears were officially rebranded as Goldbears, and Haribo began its rise to international fame — helped along by a catchy slogan that would become known around the world: “Kids and grownups love it so, the happy world of Haribo.” Today, Haribo Goldbears come in five classic flavors — raspberry, lemon, strawberry, pineapple, and orange — and are made from a mixture of glucose syrup, sugar, gelatin, citric acid, and both natural and artificial flavorings and colorings. Despite their simplicity, the process behind each gummy bear is surprisingly intricate. Every new design begins as a hand-drawn sketch, which is then transformed into a 3D model and used to create production molds. The gummy mixture is heated, flavored, and colored before being poured into corn-starch molds at lightning speed. After several days of drying, the bears are coated in a thin layer of wax for shine and to prevent sticking. Only then are they sorted, inspected, and packaged for eager consumers. The scale of production is staggering. Haribo produces roughly 160 million Goldbears every day — enough in a year to wrap around the Earth ten times. The company now offers more than 200 gummy vari-

eties in Germany alone, including favorites like Happy Cola, Twin Snakes, Peach Rings, and Sour Goldbears. Seasonal and limitededition treats keep the brand fresh, while classics like Licorice Wheels and Smurfs gummies appeal to nostalgic fans. Throughout the year, Haribo adapts its gummy creations to match the seasons and the moods that come with them. Heartshaped red or pink gummies can be found in February while spring ushers in Easterthemed treats such as colorful eggs, cheerful bunnies, and playful nests or green frogs, capturing the lightness of the season. As temperatures rise, consumers often gravitate toward “Tropifrutti,” a line celebrated for its bright, tropical fruit flavors or wine gummies with a grape flavor that evoke the feeling of summer holidays. Autumn brings a shift in tone, with gummies inspired by Harry Potter, along with spooky shapes like spiders, witches, and vampires that fit perfectly with Halloween festivities. Winter, in turn, transforms store shelves into a festive landscape filled with Santa Claus gummies, elves, Christmas trees, and tiny gift-shaped sweets. In Germany, gummy-filled Advent calendars have become a beloved tradition, offering a different treat behind each door as the countdown to Christmas unfolds. Other special editions such as “Starmix” with flying saucers, spacecraft and astronauts have also made a showing. At the same time, rising interest in gelatine-free and vegan options has encouraged Haribo to expand its product range, introducing new variations that cater to evolving dietary preferences and consumer values. Haribo’s growth has been equally impressive. With global revenue estimated between €1.7 and €2.0 billion — and Haribo of America reporting around $3 billion — the company has become a confectionery powerhouse. In 2023, Haribo opened its first North American manufacturing facility in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, ensuring that American consumers can enjoy Goldbears made closer to home. Meanwhile, the company’s headquarters, originally located in Bonn’s Kessenich district, moved in 2019 to Grafschaft in Rhineland-Palatinate, though Bonn remains an important production site. From a humble shed in Bonn to a worldwide phenomenon, Haribo Goldbears have traveled a remarkable journey. They have survived war, economic upheaval, and shifting consumer tastes, all while maintaining their simple charm. Billions of people have enjoyed these tiny bears or one of the many other figures over the past century, each with their own favorite flavor or memory tied to the cheerful crinkle of a Haribo bag. Goldbears are more than candy — they are a testament to creativity, perseverance, and the universal delight of a sweet treat shared across generations. And by one rough estimate, the very first bear from 1922 now has over 4 trillion “descendants” in the world. Happy Bear Day!

A celebration of enduring friendship, competitive spirit U.S. Army Soldiers participating in the 2026 German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge competition. The demanding five-day event, held from Feb. 23-27 as a highlight of the German American Friendship Day festivities, concluded with around 220 participants earning the coveted badge.

by Michelle Thum Public Health Command Europe In a powerful display of the enduring alliance between Germany and the United States, approximately 400 U.S. service members gathered to test their military skills and physical prowess in the 2026 German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge competition. The demanding five-day event, held from Feb. 23-27 as a highlight of the German American Friendship Day festivities, concluded with around 220 participants earning the coveted badge. The competition was more than just a test of individual skill; it was a symbol of the deep partnership forged over decades between the two nations. Co-hosted by U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe and the U.S. Air Force’s 86th Airlift Wing, the event brought together U.S. Army Soldiers, U.S. Airmen and German Bundeswehr soldiers in a spirit of camaraderie. Master Sergeant Benjamin Angel, the Senior German Officer of the German element at NATO’s Allied Air Command, reflected on the event’s remarkable growth. “Initially, it was a small event between Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and one of the Bundeswehr troops stationed at Ramstein,” Angel said. “We started out with a handful of people and this year more than 300 people

stepped up to earn the coveted badge. It is great seeing everyone together and being an ambassador for their country.” This sentiment was echoed by event planners, who emphasized the competition’s role in fostering friendship and improving interoperability. “What makes this event special is that participants aren’t competing against each other; they are

competing against themselves,” said 1st Sgt. Dana Cavazos from Veterinary Readiness Activity, Rheinland Pfalz. “Watching them push past what they thought were their limits while everyone cheers them on is an incredible sight.” The six pillars of proficiency To earn the GAFPB, candidates had to prove their competence in a series of grueling events designed

to test their comprehensive military readiness: 1. First Aid: Candidates were required to have completed a Combat Lifesaver Training Level 1 course or an equivalent. 2. NBC Test: Participants had to demonstrate their ability to quickly and properly do a full set of Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical protective gear. 3. Basic Fitness Test: A three-

part test completed within 90 minutes, including a minimum five-second flexed-arm hang, a 1000-meter sprint and a chinup test. 4. Marksmanship: Proficiency was tested with a German weapon, requiring soldiers to meet the standards of the Schützenschnur qualification through various shooting exercises.

5. Foot March: A timed endurance test carrying a rucksack weighing at least 15 kg (33 lbs). Distances varied for each badge level. 6. Swimming: A challenging 100meter swim in full military uniform, immediately followed by the task of removing the outer uniform while treading water. Showcasing excellence and determination The competition showcased the outstanding readiness of both U.S. and German troops. Among the standout performers were Sgt. Brody Kufahl, veterinary

technician from the Veterinary Readiness Activity, Rheinland Pfalz, who earned the title of fastest swimmer with a remarkable time of 2:02 min and Sgt. 1st Class Marissa Henson, Food Inspection Noncommissioned officer in charge at Veterinary Readiness Activity, Rheinland Pfalz, who was the top overall female performer. The event also highlighted stories of personal determination. Air Force Master Sgt. Deborah Townsend decided to compete on a whim after seeing a poster for a swim class. “I signed up for the GAFPB the day before registration and made it onto the waitlist,” she

explained. “Based on luck, I was able to get a spot. I’ve come across the opportunity to earn the GAFPB only a few times in my career, but when I came across it in Germany, I had to try. It’s extra special earning it here.” Ultimately, the annual compe tition serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment to security that has defined the transatlantic alliance for decades. The demanding standards of the GAFPB ensure that those who earn it represent the peak of military preparedness, embodying the shared strength and dedication of the Allied Nations.

STAY SAFE ON THE AUTOBAHN The German Autobahn is widely known for stretches without a mandatory speed limit, but safe and legal driving there depends on a few important rules everyone must follow. Keep right — stay in the right-hand lane unless you are overtaking another vehicle. No passing on the right — overtaking on the right is prohibit ed except in slow-moving traffic. Check mirrors — always glance at your side mirror before moving into the left lane and look over your shoulder. Signal every maneuver — use your indicators when changing lanes or overtaking. No tailgating — following too closely is illegal and can incur a fine.

Observe speed guidance — many sections have limits; where no limit is posted, the recommended speed is 130 km/h. Emergency lane forma tion: on three-lane highways, leave a clear lane between the leftmost lane and the lane to its right. On four-lane highways, drivers in the left lane move left while drivers in the other lanes move right to create a central emergency corridor. JASMUND from Page 1

Hiking trail through the beech forest in Jasmund National Park on the island of Rügen on the Baltic Sea.

Königstuhl National Park Center Located above the famous chalk cliffs, Königstuhl offers one of the park’s best experiences. There, visitors will find fascinating exhibitions about the park’s history, geology and ecology. You’ll also get to experience a newly built (and awesome) Skywalk, on which you’ll feel like you’re floating above the cliffs. The Königstuhl center is one of the few places in the park that charges an admission fee. Tickets cost €12 per adult and €6 for children ages 6-14. Children 5 and under are free, and family tickets are available for €25. Getting to Jasmund National Park By car, the park is nine hours from Kaiserslautern, 10 hours from Stuttgart, and eight hours from Wiesbaden. It makes an excellent side trip from Berlin or Lübeck, and is an equally strong choice for a long weekend in a nearby village such as Sassnitz.

Four-season hiking Jasmund National Park is a trail lover’s dream. Home to well-marked trails that stretch through all sorts of ecosystems — UNESCO World Heritagedesignated old-growth beech forests, wild grassland, moors, and more — it’s perfect for walkers, hikers, runners, and cyclists. The park also provides a great place to explore all year round. As perhaps you’ve experienced, winter hiking in Germany can be fantastic. The same thing holds true within the park. Facing

down the Baltic Sea in, say, late December is bracing to say the least. But it’s also incredible. You’ll rarely feel more alive when you’re standing at the top of the park’s white cliffs while the water goes wild below. Excellent maps are located on the park’s website.

The white cliffs of Jasmund National Park Without a doubt, the massive, white, chalky cliffs are the defining feature of Jasmund National Park. Nearly 400 feet high in some places, the cliffs make visitors feel like they’re in another world, especially when you’re walking the rugged beach and looking upward. From up above, the cliffs make for excellent photo ops. Most people won’t believe you if you tell them you’re in Germany! There are, however, two very important caveats about the cliffs: first, it is forbidden to climb them. Park rules are very specific about this, for reasons related to visitor safety (they’re super steep) and conservation (chalk doesn’t hold up as well to human feet as, say, granite). Second, you have to watch out for falling rocks: as noted previously, chalk is not the most stable material. If you’re really into chalk, make sure you check out the (surprisingly fascinating!) Rügen Chalk Museum, located at the western edge of the park. The only chalk museum in Europe, it is located in an old chalk mining factory.

toric. The park’s chalky white cliffs flank the sometimes wild waters of the Baltic Sea. The park offers amaz ing hiking, UNESCO-recognized beech forests, incredible views, geocach ing, and a whole lot more for solo travelers, families, and everyone in between.
