Pressure has a way of introducing itself eventually.
For a four-person shop responsible for keeping C-130J Super Hercules aircraft wheels moving back into Ramstein’s supply system, resilience is not measured by how often pressure appears. It’s measured by how the Airmen assigned to the 86th Maintenance Squadron’s wheel and tire shop respond when it does.
These Airmen see it in the worn tread patterns and damaged sidewalls of the tires, alongside wheels that have carried the load of countless takeoffs and landings. Every wheel that comes into the shop follows a different path. Some wheels move to corrosion control, others require nondestructive inspections or measurements, meaning every step depends on combined efforts.

WASHINGTON — The Air Force recognized four Airmen for their exceptional leadership qualities during the Lance P. Sijan Award ceremony at the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes, May 26.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach hosted the event, presenting the prestigious award to a senior officer, junior officer, senior enlisted and junior enlisted member who demonstrated the highest qualities of leadership in their work and conduct.
The award is named in honor of Capt. Lance P. Sijan, an Air Force fighter pilot who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism and resilience while a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.
“Captain Lance Sijan represents the very best of what it means to serve in the Profession of Arms,” Wilsbach said. “His legacy is still so impactful because the qualities he lived by are the same qualities we want the Airmen in our Air Force to embody today. He lived the Code of Conduct. He resisted by every means available, continually looked for opportunities to escape, and refused special favors from the enemy. And through these challenges, Captain Sijan remained committed to his fellow Airmen and to his country.”
The 2026 Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award recipients are:
• Senior Officer category: Maj. Joe Goliber: As chief of the advanced training division for Air Forces Central, Goliber led his team in executing over 30 security cooperation events with 13 countries. He
also flew with the United Arab Emirates Shaheen squadron as an F-16 exchange pilot, developing allied pilots and employing combat air power.
• Junior Officer category: Capt. Megan Langas: An F-16 electronic combat pilot and flight commander in the 55th Fighter Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base, Langas led 17 fighter pilots and oversaw the execution of 13 combat sorties, resulting in over 15 Combat Action Medals for her crew.
• Senior Enlisted award recipient: Chief Master Sgt. William Brakebill: While at the 3rd Special Operations Squadron, Brakebill guided 1,400 personnel through the wing’s largest deployment. He was recognized as Air Force Special Operations Command’s 2024 “Red” Erwin Outstanding Enlisted Aviator and contributed to the General Welsh Total Force Integration Team of the Year.
• Junior Enlisted award recipient: Master Sgt. Steven Nelson: As the flight chief and wing survival, evasion, resistance and escape superintendent at the 1st Special Operations Support Squadron, Nelson guided the Air Force’s largest operational SERE flight, directing global training and deployments. His overhaul of the career field’s training standards established a new Air Force-wide benchmark.
“The Airmen we recognize today have demonstrated exceptional leadership through mission accomplishment, problem solving, perseverance and service to others,” Wilsbach stated. “Each of you has made an impact on your units, your teammates and

the mission. Your actions strengthened readiness and helped generate combat power for our Air Force.”
Janine Sijan, the younger sister of Capt. Lance P. Sijan, was also in attendance and has joined these ceremonies to continue sharing her brother’s story with
the generations of Airmen.
“Grief changes shape through years,” Janine said. “Love endures and stays steadfast and constant. Once I learned to overcome my grief, I knew what I needed to do. I needed to continue to share his story, continue (to myself) think if he could do that — I could do ‘this.’ What is your ‘this?’ Everyday your ‘this’ will change in small, medium and large ways, but I ask you to consider if he could do that, then I can do ‘this.’”

P.
The Lance P. Sijan U.S. Air Force Leadership Award, first presented in 1981, was named in honor of the first Air Force Academy graduate to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. Each year it is given to a
and junior officer, and a

enlisted member who demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities thoughout the
Wilsbach concluded his remarks by emphasizing the connection between the recipients’ actions and Sijan’s enduring legacy.
“To have your name associated with one of the greatest heroes in Air Force history is one of the highest honors our service can give you,” he said. “Leaders like you ensure that legacy continues and help keep the United States Air Force the most capable and respected force in the world.”

Story &
by Senior Airman Brenden Beezley 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
For Staff Sgt. Haley Jergensen, 86th Airlift Wing Judge Advocate civil law paralegal, dependability means taking responsibility when teammates need support, when the mission grows heavier and when no perfect roadmap exists for what comes next.
Jergensen said dependability has never been about having every answer. To her it is about being honest when she does not, asking for help when needed and making sure the people around her do not face challenges alone. She arrived at Ramstein Air Base in March 2025 after retraining from aircrew flight equipment into the paralegal career field. When she arrived, the Civil Law section’s master sergeant position was vacant. It placed her in a role that required her to learn the job while also helping guide the customer-service-heavy section, which supports legal assistance clients, legal reviews, private organization requests, off-duty employment reviews and other issues that affect Airmen and families.
“There were challenges at times,” Jergensen said. “I didn’t know everything, but I was honest with my team.”
As time went on and additional leadership arrived, responsibilities became more balanced across the section. The experience was eyeopening for Jergensen and laid the foundation she would rely on again at the beginning of this year, when operations increased and key leaders were pulled away in support of
mission requirements.
“When operations increased, more people needed assistance,” Jergensen said. “The change happened very quickly and we had to focus on our priorities. If someone was deploying, we were going to move them up.”
Once again stepping into an elevated leadership role, Jergensen helped the section adapt quickly while keeping support to clients on track.
“I felt like I was responsible for everyone in the section at the time,” she said. “Building the team, building trust with the people in my section and keeping the morale as best as it could be at the time, that mattered.”
That same sense of responsibility carried into the way she supported teammates outside the normal rhythm of the office.
When one teammate underwent knee surgery and could not drive, Jergensen understood how quickly everyday tasks could become obstacles.
“I would want someone to help me if I couldn’t walk or if I couldn’t drive myself,” she said. “He’s a teammate.”
Jergensen stepped up to advocate for him and helped the office build a shared schedule for meals, transportation and visits, giving others a way to support him consistently throughout recovery.
“It wasn’t all just on me,” Jergensen said. “People took turns visiting him, taking him to his appointments. Watching the flight pull through and pull together like that, it really helped.”
Her support for the team did not
stop there. When another coworker prepared to PCS during a high-risk pregnancy, she helped reduce the administrative burden during an already difficult transition.
“I wanted her to be able to focus on getting ready to leave and take care of herself and her family,” Jergensen said. “We needed to take that off of her plate.”
From her perspective, those actions are connected to how she views leadership: recognizing when people need help and removing obstacles where she can.
Despite the added responsibility, Jergensen said she focused on building trust, staying honest with her team and keeping morale as steady as possible.
“I felt like I was responsible for everyone in the section at the time,” Jergensen said. “Building the team, building trust with the people in my section and keeping the morale as best as it could be at the time, that mattered.” Her leadership did not go unnoticed.
“Staff Sgt. Jergensen is great at balancing taking care of the people and the needs of the mission to make sure that both are done and done well,” said Lt. Col. Sarah Laidir, 86th AW JA Civil Law chief. “She always steps up to the plate when ops tempo gets high or when higher-level leadership isn’t available, and we can trust her to keep the ship running.”
Looking back, Jergensen said the experience strengthened her belief that leadership is not measured by perfection, but the willingness to support others, remain flexible, adaptable and keep moving forward one day at a time.

SAINT-MIHIEL, FRANCE – Nestled among the rolling hills of northeastern France’s Grand Est region, the Saint-Mihiel American Cemetery spans 40 acres and serves as the final resting place for 4,153 American service members who died during World War I.
On May 24, American and French military officials, local dignitaries and civilians gathered at the historic cemetery to honor the fallen service members buried there during a Memorial Day ceremony.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Ms. Margaret Dumont, mayor of ThiaucourtRegniéville; French Air Force Maj. Gen. Pierre Gaudilliere, departmental military delegate; Maj. Gen. Michael B. Lalor, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command; Yves Seguy, prefect of Meurtheet-Moselle; and Yvonne Gonzales, U.S. consul general of Strasbourg, all of whom delivered remarks during the ceremony.
Dedicated in 1937, the cemetery contains 4153 headstones, including 4,107 Latin crosses, and 46 stars of David. The Tablets of the Missing bear the names of 284 service members whose remains were never recovered. The cemetery also honors one Medal of Honor recipient and one set of brothers buried side by side.
Chaplain Col. Eric Dean, command chaplain for the 21st TSC, opened the ceremony
“We give thanks for the enduring bond between France and the United States, and all of our NATO partners and allies,” Dean said. “For nations standing together in times of trial, bearing one another’s burdens in the cause of liberty.”
Mike Knapp, chief of historical services for the American Battle Monuments Commission, said Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder that the freedoms Americans enjoy today were secured through tremendous sacrifice.
“As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding this July, we are reminded that America’s story has never been guaranteed,” Knapp said. “The freedoms we cherish today are the inheritance of their courage.”
Knapp also shared the story of Pvt. Bert Markham, a U.S. Marine killed during the Saint-Mihiel Offensive in September 1918, whose grave rests among many others from the same battle.
“If you walk among the headstones here and read, you’ll see many stories similar to Markham’s,” Knapp said. “A testament to the tremendous cost of days like that and wars like these.”
Jason Ford, a staff member with the Fort Mill High School band said students traveled to France to honor service members from their South Carolina community who died
during the world wars.
“Fort Mill lost 28 Soldiers during World War II and 12 during World War I, all from the same small town, including Pvt. Patterson, who is buried at Saint-Mihiel American Cemetery,” Ford said. “We wanted to honor their sacrifice and preserve their legacy for future generations.”
After learning Patterson was buried here at the cemetery, the band coordinated with the American Battle Monuments Commission to perform during the ceremony as a tribute to the fallen.
Gaudillière urged attendees to remember the sacrifices made by Allied forces during World War I.
“Remember, always be ready,” Gaudillière said. “Lest we forget.”
In his remarks, Lalor reflected on the enduring alliance between the United States and France and the coalition effort that contributed to victory during World War I.
“More than a century ago, Saint-Mihiel stood as a stubborn protrusion in Allied lines,” Lalor said. “But we allied as nations, unified against a single cause, and prevailed

against a common enemy.”
Lalor said the ceremony not only honored those who died during World War I, but also served as a reminder of the continuing obligations shared by NATO allies today.
“Since 1778, the U.S. Army motto has been ‘This We’ll Defend,’” Lalor said. “The emphasis is deliberately on ‘we’ rather than ‘I.’ In Europe, that ‘we’ has always extended beyond our own ranks to include our allies.”
Gonzales reflected on the sacrifices of American service members buried far from home and reaffirmed the enduring relationship between France and the United States.
“To honor our fallen heroes is to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, to justice, and to the unbreakable bond between our people,” Gonzales said.
Following her remarks, Gonzales joined fellow dignitaries and veteran organizations, including Col. Charles Douglas, deputy commander of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, in laying wreaths in honor of the fallen.
“Laying a wreath here is a deeply humbling experience,” Douglas said. “It is an honor to represent the U.S. Army and to pay tribute on behalf of Soldiers past and present.”
Douglas said the cemetery’s quiet dignity
underscored the scale of sacrifice made during World War I.
“Knowing the sacrifices made by those who rest here, and the scale of the sacrifice during World War I, gives me a deep sense of gratitude and reflection,” said Douglas. “It is a powerful reminder of the cost of the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Following closing payers and a moment of silence, the ceremony concluded as a bugler played “Taps,” its notes echoing across the French countryside. Wreaths rested among the rows of white marble headstones adorned with small American flags.
“Ceremonies like this make history tangible,” Douglas said. “They give younger generations a chance to see and understand that these are not just names on a wall or stones in a cemetery. They were individuals who made extraordinary sacrifices.”
Douglas said bringing together military members, local communities, students, and international partners ensures these stories continue to be told.
“I hope ceremonies like these reassures families that their loved ones are not forgotten,” Douglas said. “Their service is honored with dignity, respect, and enduring remembrance.”

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
As Mexico, the United States and Canada look forward to hosting the Soccer World Cup 2026 in just a few days, Kaiserslautern is already a step ahead. Or twenty years to be more precise!
A short, but notable and decidedly sporty chapter in the city’s story, especially for soccer fans, came in 2006 when Kaiserslautern, the smallest of the 12 German host cities, turned into a colorful festival from June to July.
One of a dozen Kaiserslautern was selected not only for the storied success of 1. Fussballclub Kaiserslautern’s (1 FCK) four-time German champions in 1951, 1953, 1991, and 1998, but also as the birthplace of beloved players Fritz and Ottmar Walter.
The city’s strong regional infrastructure, its proximity to Ramstein Air Base, able to accommodate U.S. players and receive distinguished guests such as the King and Queen of Spain, and an already sizable stadium all helped persuade FIFA to give the relatively small city a prominent role in the tournament.
In addition, the short distance from the train station to both the stadium and city center made it easy for fans to stroll down Schneiderstrasse’s “Fanmeile” and visit the pedestrian area’s pubs and restaurants. Furthermore, a large group of dedicated American 1. FCK fans served as the little tongue on the scale for FIFA’s decision.
Although a few alterations needed to be made prior to the games, for example, Autobahn A6 was widened to three lanes, construction and beautification projects were carried out throughout the city. Betzenberg stadium was enlarged to meet FIFA stan-
dards and renamed “Fritz-WalterStadion” in his honor, the city was ready for the world to come!
The whole world as guest in Kaiserslautern
Fans and players from around the world began flocking in on June 11, ahead of the opening match the next day, while shuttles from Ramstein Air Base were launched to prevent traffic chaos and sustain a month of thrilling games and warm hospitality.
Enthusiasts from Australia, Brazil, Italy, Japan, Paraguay, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States found their way to Kaiserslautern, while many of them had never heard of the city before and had to consult maps to even find it!
The entire city became one big fiesta under perfect weather, with daily parades showcasing drum groups, cheerful dance ensembles, and traditional music— Kaiserslautern felt like the whole world was at its feet.
Hundreds of Australians and New Zealanders arrived in camper vans, often parked in no-parking zones while authorities turned a blind eye, and neighbors greeted them with brötchen and coffee each morning—hospitality at its finest. The mates from Down Under also tended to be rather thirsty and for a short time, all beer in the city was sold out, so that new kegs had to be quickly organized from breweries throughout the region.
Trinidad and Tobago brought a splash of color, parading through the streets in exotic, dragonfly-like costumes, while inflatable kangaroos seemed to outnumber those in Australia. Fans from around the globe waved bright flags and celebrated peacefully and the city also experienced Carnival in Brazil in the middle of summer.
At times the city hosted more visitors than its 100,000 residents, with Saudi sheikhs arriving by helicopter, and the USA scoring a sweeping 1:1 tie against Italy on June 17, the team that later won the World Cup in the finals in Berlin.
That day the stadium in Kaiserslautern also held a moment of silence for Fritz Walter who had passed away on June 17, 2002. Germany’s third-place finish rounded off the championship, which afterward earned the nickname Deutsches Sommermärchen (Germany’s summer fairytale).
Fritz and his legacy
It is unfortunate that local hero Fritz Walter didn’t live to experience Kaiserslautern as the venue of the 2006 Soccer World Cup.
Fritz Walter and his brother Ottmar were born and raised in Kaiserslautern. They came to fame as prominent German soccer players in the 1950’s. Together with Horst Eckel of Vogelbach, they starred in the Soccer World Cup in 1954 when Germany won the championship. They not only brought fame to themselves, but shaped following generations of dedicated and passionate soccer
fans in Kaiserslautern and the region, sometimes referred to as the “red devils” based on their red team color.
Not known by many, Fritz was drafted into the German Wehrmacht at Daenner Kaserne in 1940, stationed at various bases around Europe and eventually served in the 2nd Company Fortress Battalion 902, responsible for Sardinia and Corsica. During his time in service, he had a very adventurous time as soccer player and played in various formations as “guest player” with the 1. Fussball Club Kaiserslautern.
In 1945 he was taken as a prisoner of war, encamped in Romania, and according to his autobiography, a severe case of malaria and an impromptu soccer game with two camp guards, saved him from being deported to Siberia.
Upon his return, he played on various teams in southwest Germany, then with the 1. FCK and was appointed as team captain of the German national team. The high point of his career came with Germany’s 1954 World Cup triumph in Switzerland, the “Miracle
of Bern,” when they scored the winning goal against Hungary six minutes from time. A bronze soccer ball at the Kaiserbrunnen by Mainzer Tor in Kaiserslautern bears his hand-signed signature. There is an American 1 FCK fan club with about 10,000 followers on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ people/American-1FCKaiserslautern-FanClub/100069043911631/
His team is still referred to as the “Walter Elf” and the formation “Elf Freunde” (eleven friends) was erected with statues of him and his teammates in a traffic circle leading to the stadium, close to the train station in Kaiserslautern. A signpost at Schillerplatz depicts directional signs of all nations that participated in Kaiserslautern in 2006.
Trusting that the 2026 championship across the seas delivers the same peaceful, sportsmanlike vibe as Fritz demonstrated during his time, warmest wishes to all teams and players. Now, let the games begin!
Keep an eye out for the next Time Travel in Kaiserslautern feature — one more significant era is on its way.

by German-American Community Office
A few weeks ago, a team member at the German-American Community Office (GACO) walked into work and immediately sensed something was… fishy. The beloved fish statue in the corner had vanished! Had it gone on vacation? Swum off to find itself? Left us for a more glamorous pond? The team was baffled,
bewildered, and maybe a tiny bit offended. Before we could file a missing fish report, we discovered the truth: The 786 CES team had whisked it away for a makeover. Meanwhile, the City of Kaiserslautern has been busy cleaning up the remaining fish around town and teaming up with local agencies to create brand new ones for the city’s 750th anniversary.
Then last week — just as mysteriously as it had disappeared — our fish returned. No note, no explanation, just a fabulous new paint job and a glow up worthy of a reality TV reveal. Now the GACO fish is shining bright, dressed to impress, and ready to celebrate 750 years of city rights in Kaiserslautern!
Thank you very much to the great team of the 786 CES! You did a fabulous job!

Charlie Garcia, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron aerial delivery supervisor, poses on the flightline at Ramstein Air Base, May 21. Garcia’s dedication to the 37th Airlift Squadron’s mission enabled the successful execution of 200 airdrop training missions and ensured aircrew maintained their qualifications.

The sound of forklifts moving cargo, jets revving up to takeoff and pallets being prepared echo daily throughout the aerial delivery shop at the 86th Logistic Readiness Squadron. In a space once filled with Airmen, chatter and constant movement, one man continues showing up each day determined to keep the mission moving forward.
Charlie Garcia, 86th LRS aerial delivery supervisor, spent the past several months sustaining a workload normally managed by an eight-person team. He has been supporting over 200 airdrop training missions for the 37th Airlift Squadron and helps keep aircrews mission qualified.
“There have been daily moments that I thought to myself, ‘how will I continue this mission and priorities for all the tasks needing to be accomplished in this section?’” Garcia expressed. “But, I maintained a resilient, calm and collected thought process to continue the aircrew training mission.”
Garcia said the responsibility became especially difficult after the shop became suddenly empty, leaving him to balance airdrop cargo

preparation, all the while simultaneously managing the entire aerial delivery operation alone.
“I absolutely hate the emptiness of the shop,” Garcia said. “I love taking care of Airmen. I love seeing their faces. Being by myself has been lonely and sad at times.”
Despite the pressure, Garcia continues supporting the flying mission through long hours, late nights and constant availability.
“The sacrifices that I’ve had to make to continue the mission have been nothing short of just being on call nonstop, working late nightly hours just to be able to continue that aircrew training mission,” Garcia said.
Lt. Col. Tyler Comte, 37th AS director of operations, described how Garcia’s consistency and professionalism allows the squadron to maintain readiness during the manpower shortage.
“The 37th AS is responsible for tactical airdrop and air land across two combatant commands, and without Charlie, we would not be able to maintain our missionready status.”
Garcia sustains the high operational tempo of an entire shop despite working alone.
“It’s unusual that one person can do what Charlie does,” Comte said. “He individually has kept the entire ops tempo up for his office, completely supporting the entire training mission.”
Garcia’s attitude became contagious throughout the squadron.
“Even if we’re asking him to do something outside the normal workflow, he has a ‘yes sir, can do’ attitude about it,” Comte said. “He shows up everyday and doesn’t leave until the job is done.”
Garcia’s perspective and experience reinforces the importance of resilience, teamwork and dedication civilians play in mission success.
“Although we do not wear the same uniform, we are part of the same organization,” Garcia said. “There are a lot of us that are mission focused and mission driven and we will accomplish the mission regardless of how it is given to us.”
Story & photos by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command
— U.S. Army Maj. Gen.
Michael B. Lalor, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and deputy commanding general for sustainment, U.S. Army Europe and Africa, joined French officials, allied military leaders, veterans, and local community members during a Memorial Day ceremony honoring more than 4,100 American service members buried at Saint Mihiel American Cemetery, May 24.
Hosted by the American Battle Monuments Commission, the ceremony commemorated American Soldiers who fought and died during the 1918 Saint-Mihiel Offensive, the first major operation conducted by the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. The cemetery also memorializes 284 missing service members whose names are inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing.
The ceremony included remarks from American and French officials, a wreath-laying ceremony, the sounding of taps, and a moment of silence to honor those who died in service more than a century ago.
Chaplain Col. Eric Dean, command chaplain for the 21st TSC, opened the ceremony with an invocation reflecting on the enduring partnership between allied nations.
“We give thanks for the enduring bond between France and the United States, and all of our NATO partners and allies,” Dean said. “For nations standing together in times of trial, bearing one another’s burdens in the cause of liberty.”
Mike Knapp, chief of historical services for the American Battle Monuments Commission, said Memorial Day serves as a reminder that the freedoms enjoyed today came at an immense human cost.
“If you walk among the headstones here and read, you’ll see many that are the same as Markham’s,” Knapp said. “A testament to the tremendous cost of days like that and wars like these.”
French Air Force Brig. Gen. Pierre Gaudillière, departmental military delegate representing the commanding general of France’s Eastern Defense Zone, encouraged attendees to remain mindful of the sacrifices made by allied forces.
“Remember, always be ready,” Gaudillière said. “Lest we forget.”
During his remarks, Lalor reflected on the Allied cooperation that helped secure victory during World War I and the enduring partnership between the United States and France.
“Over a century ago, Saint Mihiel stood as a stubborn protrusion to Allied lines,” Lalor said. “But we allied as nations, unified against a single cause, and prevailed against a common enemy.”
Lalor noted that more than 100,000 French Soldiers fought alongside American forces during the Saint-Mihiel Offensive, helping pave the way for the MeuseArgonne Offensive and the eventual end of the war.
“That decisive victory, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive that followed, paved the way to ending the Great War,” Lalor said. “That victory came at a heavy cost, a cost reflected by the white stones around us and in our hearts.”
Lalor said the ceremony served not only as a remembrance of those lost during World War I, but also as a reminder of the enduring responsibility shared by NATO allies today.
“Since 1778, the U.S. Army motto has been ‘This We’ll Defend,’” Lalor said. “The emphasis is deliberately on ‘we’ rather than ‘I.’ In Europe, that ‘we’ has always extended beyond our own ranks to include our allies.”
Yvonne Gonzales, U.S. consul general in Strasbourg, reflected on the sacrifices of American service members buried far from home and reaffirmed the enduring relationship between France and the United States.
“To honor our fallen heroes is to reaffirm our shared commitment to peace, to justice, and to the unbreakable bond between our people,” Gonzales said.
As attendees stood among rows of white marble headstones, representatives from the United States, France, veterans organizations, and military units approached the memorial to lay wreaths in honor of the fallen.
The ceremony concluded with the sounding of taps and a moment of silence as attendees reflected on the service members buried at

work,” said Senior Airman Andrew Bolek, 86th MXS wheel and tire journeyman. “Every wheel touches multiple sections before it goes back into service, so we rely on each other to get the job done right.”
Pressure may be what the tire holds, but patience is what returns it to service.
The work itself is rarely dramatic and most days are built upon repetition. A wheel arrives, it gets broken down, cleaned and inspected allowing it to be routed, rebuilt and returned to the aircraft.
None of these steps seem particularly remarkable. Yet in May alone, the shop processed approximately $61,000 worth of nose landing gear wheels and $300,000 worth of main landing gear wheels.
Urgency inside of the shop rarely comes from a single event, but more so an accumulation. More wheels, more inspections, more technical orders and more aircraft waiting on usable equipment.
Staff Sgt. Josiah Nave, 86th MXS repair and reclamation journeyman, describes it earnestly.
“Pressure means keeping everything running, even when it gets busy,” he said.
Maintaining consistency is critical to
the mission because every wheel eventually returns back to an operational C-130J aircraft.
“We follow the technical data every time,” Nave said. “The process is there for a reason and our job is to make sure every wheel meets the standard before it leaves the shop.”
The checklists are there for a reason alongside every inspection asking the same question. The answer matters because aircraft tires carry expectations and trust rather than just pressure.
In many ways, so do the people.
“Our work directly impacts flight operations,” Bolek said. “When pilots and aircrew step onto an aircraft, they trust that every component has been inspected and maintained correctly.”
Neither aircraft tires nor people are designed to avoid pressure entirely. They’re designed to handle it.
“We take pride in what we do because we know it matters,” Nave said. “At the end of the day, we’re helping keep aircraft operational and supporting the Air Force’s mission.”
On a base where aircraft launch daily and mission requirements rarely slow down, most people will never think about aircraft wheels. Although, that’s usually a sign the shop is doing its job.

At Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, the Coca-Cola 600 was everything it is supposed to be: horsepower, heat, noise and 600 miles of punishment. It was also something harder to stage and easier to cheapen. It was remembrance.
Charlotte Motor Speedway and NASCAR did not hide Memorial Day in a program note or a patriotic graphic between green flags; they built it into the race. Each car carried the name of a fallen service member. The Gold Star family luncheon — an annual feature of the race for years now — brought surviving families together with drivers, military leaders and guests. At the race's halfway point, the engines shut off, the grandstands went still and thousands of people were asked to stop long enough to remember why the weekend exists.
For Jane Horton, one of those names was not a name on a windshield. It was her husband.
Army Spc. Christopher David Horton, a sniper assigned to the Oklahoma Army National Guard's 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, rode with Ty Dillon's No. 10 Chevrolet. He was 26 when he was killed Sept. 9, 2011, in Zormat district, Paktia Province, Afghanistan. He left behind parents, siblings, friends, soldiers who loved him and a wife who has spent nearly 15 years refusing to let his life become a slogan.
Gold Star families are families of service members killed in combat operations. And Jane Horton knows how easily America turns sacrifice into ceremony without letting the ceremony change anything.
"I haven't [been featured in] a Memorial Day article in years," Horton said during race weekend. "I used to go on the news all the time and talk about Memorial Day, because it would drive me nuts that the American people don't know what it is."
Then she put the day into one sentence. "364 days out of the year is about you, and we could never do enough for you," she said. "But this one day is for the dead."
Even at the speedway, Horton kept looking for Gold Star badges. She watched lanyards, shirts and lapels the way others watched pit road. When she saw a family wearing that mark, she went to them. She traded contact information and exchanged phone numbers; not to network and not to be seen, but because she knows what it feels like to carry a loved one's death into a crowd. She wanted them to know their families had an advocate. She wanted them to know their fallen would not fade.
That is what she does. At the Pentagon. In Congress. At Dover Air Force Base, Delaware. At a racetrack. On the phone at 1 a.m.
"I'm just an advocate for them," Horton said. "If they need something, they'll call."
That sentence sounds small only to someone who has never needed the call answered. Horton has spent her adult life making

never could take alive.
In 2016, she traveled to Afghanistan with then-Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, serving as a special assistant and ombudsman to the troops. She went not for closure. Closure is too clean a word for grief that never leaves. She went to see the land where Chris fought, bled and died. She went because the soil there held part of her life. She went because terrorism had killed her husband, but would not define his story.
It was not her last trip. Horton eventually made six trips to Afghanistan in different official capacities, traveling with senior U.S. leaders, meeting Afghan officials and seeing the country not as a headline but as a people. She later served as congressional and military liaison for the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington, where she helped connect the embassy with Congress, the Pentagon and the military community.
That is the line Americans should carry into Memorial Day. Not because it absolves the country, but because it indicts the country. If America sends its sons and daughters to war, America does not get to forget the war while they fight it. It does not get to discover Afghanistan only when the last C-17s are leaving Kabul. It does not get to thank a widow and avoid the harder question of whether she understood what her husband was ordered to do.
And that is why the Coca-Cola 600 matters when it is done right.
sure the government remembers that casualty assistance is not a process. It is a family standing in a doorway after the worst knock of their lives. It is a child who wants to follow a parent into service. It is a spouse who needs a fellowship in government service, a mother who needs answers, a father who needs someone to say his son's name without looking away. Horton has championed education benefits for surviving spouses, Gold Star family fellowships, survivor policy changes in defense legislation and initiatives that give families direct access to senior leaders. More recently, she has helped lead Gold Star family efforts from inside the secretary of war's office, where policy becomes real only if someone forces it to touch people.
She learned that work first through Chris.
Jane met him when they were 18 and 19 at a small school in New York City. They talked about America, government and politics. He was from Alabama and Oklahoma, a military school kid from seventh through 12th grade, a civilian shooter, a man who would become a sniper.
He was not warm and fuzzy.
"He was more like a warrior," Horton said. "He was stoic, but he also had a huge heart."
When he brought Jane to Oklahoma, his family was stunned. They never expected Chris to marry young. Then he sold his guns to buy her engagement ring.
"Yes, Chris, the trained sniper, sold his guns," Horton said.
They married in 2009. War bent the calendar. He left for pre-mobilization in February 2011. They believed he would come home because he was good at what he did, because he had trained for war the way a surgeon trains for an operating room, because young couples have to believe the future belongs to them.
Seven months later, he was dead.
Two days after that, on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Jane stood at Dover to receive the flag-draped casket of the man she had expected to grow old with. The war that began when America was attacked had taken him. His final flight home was not the one either of them imagined.
Years later, Jane made the flight Chris
Her work there was not just abstract diplomacy.
She hosted hundreds of fellow Gold Star families at the Afghan Embassy so Afghanistan could become more than the place their loved ones died. She bought Afghan silver and lapis for the daughters of fallen heroes so they could hold something beautiful from the land where their fathers' blood remained. She told families about girls going to school, women serving in parliament and children building robotics teams. She wanted them to see that the sacrifice had produced life, that something good had grown in the hard ground.
In 2017, she went outside the wire to Afghanistan's Presidential Palace. Afghan women she worked with helped her prepare, even warning her against the red lipstick she wore almost every day. She passed through layers of security and saw Afghan soldiers drilling in ceremonial uniforms. Former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani thanked her for the sacrifices of America's fallen and their families.
The weight of that moment never left her.
Neither did the weight of what came later.
When Kabul fell in 2021, the country where Chris died collapsed before the eyes of Americans who had spent years not looking. For Horton, the withdrawal reopened wounds, not because she had mistaken Afghanistan for easy, but because she had seen the people who would pay for American forgetfulness. She had held Afghan children. She had met Afghan women who believed in the future they were promised. She had sat with troops and families who had given pieces of themselves to that mission.
"Nobody paid attention to Afghanistan until it was over," Horton said. "They didn't. Nobody cared."
After the withdrawal, she wrote that the fall of Afghanistan broke her in a way Chris' death had not. She saw his picture and the pictures of other fallen Americans thrown back into public debate under a cruel question: Did they die for nothing?
Her answer demanded more from America than sympathy.
"When I sent my husband to war, he was no longer mine," she wrote. "He was ours. He was America's."
A race cannot repay a life. A luncheon cannot erase a knock at the door. A name on a car cannot bring Chris Horton home. But a racetrack can force a crowd to learn a name. A driver can carry a story. A speedway can make the living sit still with the dead. A family can walk into a room and be treated not as a prop for patriotism, but as part of the American story.
At Charlotte, Horton accepted the gratitude but kept redirecting it.
When she saw police escorts and VIP treatment, she did not confuse it for something she earned.
"That's for my husband," she said.
That is the thread through her life. Turn it back to Chris. Turn it back to the fallen. Turn it into action. Hold people to their words.
"I hold people's feet to the fire that say they care about Gold Star families," Horton said. "Thank you for saying you care, but how do you actually turn that into action?"
It is a fair question for Memorial Day.
There is room this weekend for joy. Horton believes that. Chris would want people to live. Go to the race. Take the trip. Fire up the grill. Laugh with your children. Enjoy the freedom bought for you by people you may never meet. But do not confuse enjoyment with ignorance.
Patriotism is not a hand wave. It is not a rubber stamp. It is not a flag emoji, a furniture sale or a thank-you delivered without understanding. It is informed gratitude. It is knowing where America sent its troops, why they went, what they endured, who did not return and which families still carry their names.
"Gold Star families are strong," Horton said. "We're serving as well in different roles and different capacities, and the best way you honor the fallen is by living the best life you can."
She has done it the hard way. By answering calls. By walking the halls of power. By going to Afghanistan. By standing at Dover. By finding families wearing Gold Star badges in a crowd and giving them her number. By making sure Chris Horton's name is not trapped in a casualty report or a widow's memory.
This Memorial Day, one of those names is Army Spc. Christopher David Horton. Say it. Learn it.
Then learn another.
And when the engines restart, when the crowd stands again and the noise returns, remember what the silence was for.
One day is for the dead.
The rest is what we do with what they left us.

ets of the city. Rotterdam offers great public transport, friendly locals, and easy walks. These elements make it easy to relax and enjoy the serendipitous moments that come with wandering the streets.
Rotterdam rocks when it comes to architecture. Let’s begin with one of the city’s famous yellow Cube Houses. Once you step inside, it’s like stepping into a rocket ship. Odd angles surround you. Open space soars upward and outward. And the views are incredible.
The Cube Houses, which were designed and built in the 1970s to resemble an avant garde urban forest, are just one of the fantastic architectural elements that define Rotterdam. The city is home to the Netherlands’ second largest population, Europe’s busiest port, and is arguably one of the most interesting cities on the continent. Beautiful bridges, including the blazing red Willems bridge and the white swanshaped Erasmus bridge, span the Maas River and are wonderfully illuminated at night. Skyscrapers jut upward at odd angles and give the city’s skyline an eclectic character. The famous Markthall – which lies directly across from the Cube Houses, is a massive glass and steel rainbow-shaped wonder that contains a variety of shops, eateries, and kiosks. Visitors can find art etched into buildings, sketched on murals, tattooed onto locals, and hanging from shopfronts and museums. Rotterdam is a feast for the soul.
Starting with a Blank Slate
The city is also, in many ways, a metaphor for rebirth. Rotterdam didn’t always look like this. Until the spring of 1940, in fact, it was much like any other northern European city, filled with brick buildings, tidy thoroughfares, narrow city streets, and bustling docks. But at the beginning of World War II, when the Dutch government didn’t surrender as quickly as invading German forces demanded, Rotterdam was made an example. The Luftwaffe bombed the city center into near nothingness. The Netherlands formally surrendered the next day.
After World War II, the people of Rotterdam had a blank slate with which to work. From this bleak beginning, they fashioned brilliance as the decades passed. The results today are remarkable: Rotterdam

stands as a testament to diversity, creativity, diligence, energy, and possibility.
Amazing Cuisine in Rotterdam
Rotterdam has emerged as one of the Netherlands’ most exciting destinations for food lovers. Unlike the postcard-perfect canal cities that many visitors associate with the country, Rotterdam offers a modern, international dining scene shaped by its status as one of Europe’s largest ports.
Visitors can sample everything from innovative Dutch cuisine and fresh North Sea seafood to Indonesian rijsttafel, Surinamese specialties, and contemporary fusion concepts. The city’s vibrant food halls, including the iconic Markthall, provide an ideal introduction to Rotterdam’s culinary diversity, while trendy neighborhoods such as Witte de Withstraat and Katendrecht are packed with stylish restaurants, cafés, and cocktail bars.

Rotterdam for Art Lovers
The city’s cultural offerings are equally impressive. Art enthusiasts can explore world-class museums, contemporary galleries, and innovative cultural spaces, while the city’s packed calendar of festivals, concerts, and design events ensures there’s always something happening.
For a more local experience, take a harbor tour to appreciate Rotterdam’s maritime heritage or stroll through the creative districts where street art, independent boutiques, and converted industrial spaces reflect the city’s forward-looking spirit.
Easily reachable by train, Rotterdam makes an excellent weekend getaway for anyone seeking a fresh alternative to Amsterdam. So go to Rotterdam. Experience the energy yourself. Rent a room in one of the Cube houses. When night falls and
you find yourself at the top of an angled roof overlooking a glittering city, you’ll feel as though you’ve just been launched into orbit, too.
If you’re spending a few days in Rotterdam, consider a day trip to Delft. Home to Jan Vermeer, famous pottery, solid restaurants, and lovely canals, Delft is an archetypal classic Dutch village that serves as a fine stylistic and cultural contrast to Rotterdam. Plus, it is easily accessible by train from Rotterdam. Make sure you look out for local cyclists, though. They’re everywhere, and they’re faster than you think.
By car, Rotterdam is 5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 4.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 7 hours from Stuttgart. For train options, check with Deutsche Bahn.
