569th US Forces Police Squadron builds combat-ready defenders

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron, pose for a group photo at Kapaun Air Station, July 23. The Airmen participated in a field training exercise that was dedicated to exposing them to drone warfare, land navigation, integrated defense operations, communication techniques, infantry movements and mounted and dismounted operations.

Story & photos by Airman 1st Class Paden Lancaster 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron patrolman barely settled behind the radio when reports began. Routine status checks quickly turned into updates from the entry control point where a suspicious package redirected defenders across the training area. A drone spotted overhead and simulated casualties began reducing the number of Airmen available to respond. As opposing forces pressed the perimeter, every report passed through Senior Airman Rodney Richburg, the patrolman behind the radio, before moving to leadership. For Richburg, It was his first time serving as a radio telephone operator during a field training exercise, there wasn’t much time to think about what came next. “The radio was basically my whole job while everybody else was shooting,” Richburg said. “Patience is key. I had to gather the whole report of the situation before relaying it.” See POLICE, Pages 3, 16 & 17

POLICE from Page 1 Richburg was one of 14 defenders participating in the FTX that concluded two weeks of Security Forces Level 100 instruction with the 569th USPS. Instructors layered scenario after scenario, pressuring Airmen to apply classroom instruction whilst responding to an evolving defense of a simulated forward operating base throughout the day. Staff Sgt. Kane Dew, 569th USPS lead training instructor, said the goal was never to create a perfect exercise, it was to create an environment where Airmen work together while managing competing priorities. Instructors built the exercise around training injects to meet the objective, which are multiple scripted events that involve threats and prime concerns changing without warning, all designed to complicate the battlefield.

726 EMSS Fly Away Security Team Airmen refine tactical airframe integration From left, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Javier Berganza, 726th Expeditionary Mission Support Squadron Fly Away Security team lead, Airman First Class Hayden Hardin, FAST member, and Staff. Sgt. Matthew Weiner, FAST lead, completed a final review, before executing the FASEX 26.2, Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, June 30.

Story & photos by Master Sgt. Carlin Leslie 406th Air Expeditionary Wing

CAMP LEMONNIER, DJIBOUTI — In the morning, a U.S. Air Force C-130J completes a combat landing to deliver key cargo to the mission, as the ramp begins to open shots are heard in the distance, mortars begin landing within a few meters. The first thought, “This is why we train,” and the Airmen of the Fly Away Security Team, or FAST, from the 726th Expeditionary Mission Support Squadron go into action. The initiative FASEX 26.2, which was held on Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, June 30, 2026, focused on uniting security forces tactics and understanding with airlift crews to establish a unified defense against potential adversaries in high-threat regions, that was held on Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, June 30, 2026. “These types of exercises practice and refresh the tactics, techniques, and procedures used between the 726th EMSS and the 75th EAS to protect high-value assets during transport,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Dula, 726th EMSS, FAST non-commissioned

officer in charge. “This training ensures operational readiness, guaranteeing that our Fly Away Security teams can be forwarddeployed anytime and anywhere to support AFRICOM mission sets." During the simulated crisis scenario aboard the C-130J Super Hercules, Airmen practiced tactical defensive maneuvers and streamlined communication methods between all parties. Hands-on exercises like this are designed to remove communication barriers between different military specialties, preparing them for immediate deployment, when the time is needed. “Gaining a better understanding of how our flying partners and the 726th EMSS FAST operate out on a mission allowed us to expand on our roles and responsibilities, driving a more cohesive relationship between our two squadrons,” Dula said. “Ultimately, providing hands-on, realistic training to the teams involved will enhance our mission readiness and ensure we can deliver the fight when called upon.” Focusing on force protection and crisis readiness, requires training under realistic conditions,

allowing the units to build the adaptability needed to secure critical air mobility platforms. Cultivating highly skilled, adaptable Airmen ensures the 406th AEW can maintain uninterrupted operations and protect vital resources across the region. When C-130Js deploy to volatile or remote environments with insufficient local security, the aircrews from the 75 EAS rely on Security Forces "Fly Away" Security Teams who ride along to provide point defense,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Brown, 75th EAS commander. “Integrating with FAST teammates during static aircraft loading provides an opportunity to exercise complex tactical procedures without the physical or financial risks associated with an active flight line. “The training provides a safe environment where errors can be identified and corrected immediate ly, preventing catastrophic mistakes during live operations. Both aircrew and FAST benefit from the training.” Ultimately, the exercise ensured that both aircrews and security teams will execute their missions without friction, protecting both the personnel and the aircraft.

Today we’ll kick off with lakes about an hour’s drive from Kaiserslautern, perfect for a sunny day trip or a quick overnight and then share a few spots that are ideal for a long‑weekend escape. Ohmbachsee Ohmbachsee (the Ohmbach Reservoir) sits near Gries in Kusel, about 50 kilometers from Kaiserslautern. It’s the local favorite for a chill summer day — think shady walking trails, picnic spots, a seasonal bathing area, and plenty of spots for fishing and hanging out. Facilities change depending on where you go, so pack a towel and a picnic, and check for lifeguards before you dive in. Bostalsee Bostalsee, over the border in Saarland near Nohfelden, is roughly 30–40 kilometers northwest of Kaiserslautern. It’s a bigger, livelier lake with boating, sandy beaches, lakeside restaurants, and campgrounds — perfect for families and anyone into water sports. It’s a popular weekend hangout, so expect more people on warm days, but also more services and activities to keep the whole crew happy. Losheimer Stausee Losheimer Stausee is a super family‑friendly spot near Losheim in northwest Saarland, about 97 km from Kaiserslautern — roughly a bit over an hour’s drive. The

31‑hectare bathing reservoir has a staffed Strandbad, a splashy water playground, pedal boats, stand‑up paddling, mini‑golf, and a relaxed lakeside café. The campsite next door runs summer programs and often hosts open‑air concerts, so it’s great for a day out or a lively weekend stay. Gelterswoog Gelterswoog is an easy afternoon escape just past Hohenecken on the B270. You’ll find a long sandy beach, a boat dock with canoes, rowboats, and SUPs, plus a playground for little ones and lawns perfect for volleyball and picnics. There’s a kiosk for snacks and cold drinks, and nearby camping if you want to linger. It’s a big family favorite, so expect it to fill up on hot summer days. A Hippie Market is planned in September. Vogelwoog Vogelwoog is a cozy little lake tucked just off Merkustrasse, super close to the city center. Swimming’s off-limits to keep the lake healthy, but it’s perfect for a quick outdoor breather — think a forest playground, short walking loops, and easy bike access for a breezy ride. The art café by the water has a chilled beer garden with snacks and tree-lined views, making it a sweet spot for a short nature escape without the drive. Laacher See Laacher See is a dramatic volcanic caldera lake up in the northern Vordereifel, about 24 kilometers northwest of Koblenz — a bit of a longer drive but worth it. The water’s deep and the whole place has that wild volcanic

vibe, with marked walking trails, boat rentals, and seasonal swimming only in the protected spots. On the shore you’ll find the village of Glees and the beautiful Maria Laach Abbey, where cafés, a herb garden, and little shops make it easy to mix culture with a lakeside paddle or a relaxed picnic. https://www.eifel.info/en/discover-nature/volcanoes-and-maars/ laacher-see-and-maria-laach Blaue Adria Blaue Adria, near Altrip just south of Ludwigshafen, is a cluster of former gravel pits turned into sandy, swim-ready lakes. Think beaches, BBQ areas, water‑sports, and summer beach bars — a proper local hotspot for weekend hangs. It’s super popular on warm days, so expect crowds, but also plenty of seasonal services and a lively vibe if you’re after a classic summer day at the water. Bavaria and the Alpine foothills There are some seriously stunning lakes out that way, about a four‑ to five‑hour drive, but totally worth the road trip for a dreamy summer escape. Chiemsee Bavaria’s biggest lake, about 80 square kilometers and nicknamed the “Bavarian Sea,” is a total summer dream. Hop a ferry to the two islands: Herreninsel with King Ludwig II’s over-thetop Herrenchiemsee Palace and gardens, and Fraueninsel with the charming Frauenwörth monastery. The lake’s perfect for sailing, lounging on beaches, and chilling at lakeside resorts, so it works great as a longer, lazy getaway.

https://www.chiemsee-chiemgau. info/en/chiemsee Starnberger See Starnberger See is a scenic, glacier‑formed lake about 25 kilometers southwest of Munich, popular for boating, swimming, cycling and lakeside promenades. It is also known for its royal history: King Ludwig II drowned in shallow water near Schloss Berg on 15 June 1886, though the circumstances of his death remain mysterious. The lake attracts many Munich residents, and numerous wealthy villas line the shore, making Starnberg relatively expensive for overnight stays, dining and recreational activities. https://www.munich.travel/en/pois/ lakes-mountains/starnberger-see Ammersee and Tegernsee Ammersee is a broad, shallow glacial lake west of Munich known for sailing, bathing lidos, and village landings. Tegernsee is a smaller, alpine‑framed lake south of Munich prized for mountain hikes, spa towns, and classic Bavarian culture with a brewery. Both are day‑trip friendly from Munich but offer distinctly different landscapes and activities. Königssee Königsee, considered to be the ultimate, unsurpassed lake in Bavaria, is located in the Berchtesgaden Alps, its surface elevation is 603 meters (1,978 ft) above sea level. It is framed by steep mountains that rise thousands of meters above water, and its temperature is normally in the singledigit Celsius range, only suitable for vary daring swimmers. With winds funneling through the valley, it is

bringing layers of clothing is recommended and a windproof jacket even on warm days. Königssee has a famous natural echo where boat crews will play a flugelhorn (or trumpet) at the “Echo Wall,” and the sound returns in multiple clear repetitions. https://www.koenigssee. de/home Black Forest Lakes Two lakes, somewhat closer back to Kaiserslautern are also worth mentioning. Titisee and Schluchsee are the Black Forest’s two most visited lakes. Titisee is a glacial lake formed during the last ice age, set in dense conifer forest and surrounded by hills and walking trails near TitiseeNeustadt. The lake’s clear water, lakeside promenade and compact tourist center make it one of the Black Forest’s most visited day‑trip destinations. The average depth roughly 20 meters, and the lake sits at about 840–845 meters above sea level. The Schluchsee is the largest lake in the Black Forest, situated at roughly 930 meters above sea level, and is a popular center for sailing, windsurfing, swimming, hiking and cycling. Originally a natural glacial lake, it was enlarged into a reservoir by a dam in the 1930s. Quieter than Titisee, it is now surrounded by several spa hotels and resorts. https:// www.blackforestgermany.com/titisee. https://www.hochschwarzwald. de/orte/schluchsee That wraps up our seaside and lakeside series of spots to cool off this summer. Airlifter of the month:

Behind every flight – Aircrew flight equipment keeps Ramstein aircrews mission ready Story & photos by Senior Airman Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Before a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft departs Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Airmen assigned to the 86th Operations Support Squadron's Aircrew Flight Equipment flight have already inspected the emergency equipment aircrew members may depend on if the unexpected happens. From oxygen masks and parachutes to survival vests and life rafts, AFE Airmen inspect, maintain and issue equipment that helps keep aircrew members safe before, during and after flights. For U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Racquel Reid, 86th OSS AFE apprentice, that responsibility extends beyond routine inspections. "The first thing people ask when

they hear you're in the Air Force is, 'Do you fly planes?'" Reid said. "No, but I make sure the people flying those planes are equipped if an emergency happens. Aircraft can be repaired or replaced, our aircrew can't." AFE Airmen rotate through multiple sections of the shop learning to inspect and maintain a variety of emergency equipment before moving to the flightline. There, they perform Mission Termination Inspections, ensuring equipment is present, serviceable and ready before the next sortie. "When I'm inspecting equipment, I'm thinking about every tiny detail," Reid said. "You have to look for cuts, tears and holes because if you miss something, it may not function the way it was designed to." Beyond inspecting flight equip-

ment, AFE Airmen also maintain Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear response capabilities through the Aircrew Contamination Control Area and Aircrew Contamination Control Station programs. They regularly train alongside aircrew members to prepare for hazardous material response. Reid said the significance of her work became even more apparent while supporting recent operations. "It honestly gives me a lot of motivation," Reid said. "Knowing that someone could rely on this equipment to survive makes you want to give 110% every day." As one of the newest Airmen in the shop, Reid said repetition, mentorship and asking questions have been key to building her confidence. "The biggest lesson I've learned

is to never be afraid to ask questions," Reid said. "Everybody learns differently, and the more repetition you get, the more confident you'll become." Reid shared a story by an instructor during technical training that continues to shape the way she approaches every inspection. After an aircrew member survived an emergency by deploying a parachute the instructor had packed, the Airman later arrived at the instructor's home to personally thank him for saving his life. "That was the night it really hit him," Reid said. "Just knowing someone came home to their family because he did his job correctly, that's why every inspection matters." LRMC Soldiers conquer historic Nijmegen four days marches Story & photos by Bernhard Lashleyleidner Landstuhl Regional Medical Center

NIJMEGEN, NETHERLANDS – Testing their physical endurance, mental resilience, and teamwork, Soldiers from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center joined thousands of military personnel and civilians from around the world in the historic International Four Days Marches in Nijmegen, Netherlands. The 108th annual Nijmegen Four Days Marches, known as the "Walk of the World," took place July 21-24, with more than 47,000 participants, including over 6,500 service members from 77 different countries. Participants marched 100 miles (160 kilometers) over four consecutive days. Military participants completed the event in uniform while carrying a standard-issue 22-pound (10-kilogram) rucksack. Established in 1909 to promote military fitness, the event has evolved into one of the world’s largest walking events and a symbol of international friendship and military cooperation. The route passes numerous World War II battlefields and memorials, allowing participants to honor the sacrifices of Allied service members while strengthening relationships among NATO and partner nations. Today, participants ranging in age from 11 to more than 90 travel to the Dutch city on the Waal River with a single objective: earning the coveted Vierdaagsekruis, or Nijmegen Cross. This year also marked 80 years of support from the Dutch Red Cross. Earning the medal requires months of preparation. Sgt. Banegas Matute, a licensed vocational nurse at LRMC, noted that the team spent six months getting ready for the grueling 100-mile trek. “We conducted bi-weekly ruck marches, progressively increasing our mileage to build endurance and improve our ability to carry weight over long distances,” said Matute. 1st Lt. Gracious Asantewaa, chief army health clinics support cell at LRMC, said the training was not just about being physically

prepared, but developing the mental fortitude to endure discomfort, exhaustion, and the monotony of walking long miles every day. “Our preparation included endurance training, strength training and participating in several qualifying ruck marches leading up to this one,” said Asantewaa. “Each event helped us build endurance while identifying areas where we needed to improve.” Once in the Netherlands, the LRMC team was struck by the overwhelming support from the local communities. Matute said that while the march was mentally and physically demanding, the festive environment created by the Dutch spectators cheering loudly and blaring music at the starting line was unforgettable. “The energy in the towns was incredible,” Matute said. “The children were giving us high-fives and handing out treats, while fam-

ilies cheered us on with music and encouragement. Every town celebrates marchers, and that support keeps you going.” For Asantewaa, the camaraderie was the most memorable part of the experience. “This is my third time participating in Nijmegen and every year I leave with an even greater appreciation for the friendships and partnerships built through this event,” Asantewaa said. “Walking shoulder to shoulder with our NATO allies and partner nations reminds me that despite our different languages, cultures and uniforms, we all share the same values; service, sacrifices, professionalism, and respect for one another.” The greatest test came on the third day as participants crossed the hilly landscape around Groesbeek. Known as one of the most punishing legs of the journey, the route takes marchers through the infamous "Seven Hills" (Zevenheuvelenweg), pushing participants up steep climbs while they battle fatigue and painful blisters. “There were times when my body wanted to stop, but my teammates kept me going,” Asantewaa said. “Sometimes all it takes is someone beside you saying , ‘We’ve got this’ and suddenly you find the strength to keep moving.” The LRMC team had a distinct tactical advantage. “Our medical training was a major advantage because we could recognize potential hot spots and treat blisters early before they became a serious issue,” said Matute. “We still experienced the normal wear-andtear, but our background knowledge helped keep minor injuries from turning into something much worse.” The team also relied heavily on one another throughout the march. “We stayed motivated by talking, laughing and playing music,” Matute said. “We made sure everyone maintained a pace we

were comfortable with for the group.” LRMC Soldiers successfully completed the four-day march and earned the prestigious Vierdaagsekruis(Nijmegen Cross), an officially recognized foreign military decoration. For the Soldiers, the accomplishment represented more than completing a physically demanding event. “This achievement demonstrates that even though we serve in a hospital environment, we remain physically resilient and ready to perform under demanding conditions,” Matute said. It reflects the discipline and readiness expected of every Soldier. Marching alongside service members from allied nations also reinforced LRMC’s mission of supporting multinational military operations. "It was an absolute honor to participate in this historic event,” said Lt. Col Chariti Paden, chief patient administration division at LRMC. “I truly believe that the intense mental and physical endurance required to finish this march will directly translate into greater resilience and deeper empathy in the care we provide our patients." Asantewaa said the lessons learned during the event extend well beyond the finish line;preparation is essential, and teamwork is critical. “Events like this test our grit and strengthen our teams,” Paden said. “When our medical professionals overcome challenges together outside the hospital, it builds trust, resilience and teamwork that carries directly into patient care. Stronger teams ultimately provide better care for our service members, families and allies.” Capt. Caroline Kyalo, intensive care unit officer in charge at LRMC said the team overcame minor injuries and finished the demanding four-day event together, exemplifying resilience, commitment, teamwork and Army values.

Page 16 POLICE from Page 3 “When we do our field training exercises, we’re just throwing inject after inject after inject to see how the defenders respond.” Dew said. The pace left little room to separate one obligation from another. Richburg wasn’t watching the exercise unfold from a command post. He was carrying his rifle alongside the rest of his team and balancing his responsibilities on the ground with a constant flow of radio traffic. He practiced gathering information, organizing reports and shifting attention to suspicious activity surrounding his patrol as new scenarios unfolded around him. Moving through the wooded forest of the training area, Richburg recognized how the fundamentals in the classroom setting came into play. Conditions changed faster than any lesson plan could predict. Smoke bombs and flash grenades were detonated. Stressed Airmen spoke fervently through the radio. Flashes of gunfire and bullets flew all around. Screams of simulated injured personnel attempting to apply tourniquets

Kaiserslautern American echoed throughout the mock battle-field, all while ensuring to stay calm and lead the team. Richburg now understood that communication was the foundation of every decision made on the field as more of his team went down during the exercise. He depended on his teammates to provide accurate data from the field before he could relay a report through his radio. Those same teammates also depended on him to organize information into clear pictures that leaders could act on, reinforcing that no defender succeeds alone. “Communication is the number one thing for mission success,” Dew said. “If you do not communicate, things get missed. When things get missed, people get injured.” One defender’s observation became another defender’s decision, making transmission the thread that connected every position on the field. “You have to trust the next person is going to have your back,” Richburg said. “Whether you’re clearing a room, calling in a medevac or standing at the gate, everybody has to do their job.”

NAPLES, ITALY — Spring and early summer in Europe bring warmer weather, blooming trees, and — inevitably — a flood of well-meaning residents showing up at the base veterinary clinic with baby birds in tow. But according to the experts, rescuing that seemingly stranded bird is usually the wrong move. “It’s peak bird breeding season,” explained Capt. Zachary A. Kirkpatrick, veterinarian and Branch Officer in Charge at the Naples Army Veterinary Clinic. “People often find young birds on the ground and assume they are orphaned or injured.” It’s a natural human instinct to want to help a helpless-looking animal. But Kirkpatrick stresses that “while their intentions are good, in the vast majority of cases, the absolute best thing you can do is leave the bird exactly where you found it.” Scooping up a young bird and bringing it to a clinic usually does more harm than good, he warned, because it permanently separates the animal from parents who are likely still nearby, actively caring for it. To figure out if a bird needs a rescue mission, you first have to figure out how old it is. The clinic breaks them down into two main categories: nestlings and fledglings. Nestlings are the very young ones. They are usually totally bald or just have a few random patches

Veterinary treatment facilities say leave it be of downy fuzz. They can't walk, and they can’t flutter. If you find one of these on the ground, it didn’t jump — it fell. “Look around the immediate area for the nest in a nearby tree or bush. If you can safely reach it, simply pick up the bird and gently place it back inside,” Kirkpatrick advised. And don't worry about leaving your scent behind. “It is an old myth that birds will reject their young if humans touch them; most birds have a very poor sense of smell,” he added. If the original nest was destroyed by a storm or a predator, you can build a makeshift one using a small plastic container. Just poke a few drainage holes in the bottom, line it with dry grass, and hang it safely in a nearby tree. Fledglings, on the other hand, are a different story. These are the birds that generate the most often false alarms. They are older, fully feathered (even if they look a little scruffy with a stubby tail), and they can hop around or flutter for short distances. If you see one hopping around your yard, it doesn’t need to be saved. “Fledglings are exactly where they are supposed to be,” Kirkpatrick said. He describes this period as their “awkward teenager” phase. “They have left the nest to learn how to fly, forage, and survive. They spend a few days hopping around on the ground, and their parents are almost always nearby, watching them and coming down to feed them

periodically.” The official guidance for fledglings? Keep your cats and dogs indoors, give the birds some space, and let nature take its course. There is, however, one major exception to the hands-off rule. If a bird is visibly bleeding, shivering, dragging a wing, or has clearly been attacked by a pet or predator, intervention is required. But even then, the veterinary clinic shouldn't be your first stop. “In these cases, we ask that you contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator rather than bringing them straight to a standard veterinary clinic,” Kirkpatrick said. “Wildlife rehabbers have the specialized training, housing, and permits required to care for and eventually release wild bird species.” Subordinate to Public Health Command, the Veterinary Readi ness Activity, Italy, delivers com preh ensive veterin ary public health, food protection, and animal medical services to safeguard Joint Force readiness. Utilizing a “One Health” approach that links human, animal and environmental health, VRA, I, is responsible for clinical care of Military Working Dogs and Government Owned Animals, strict food and water safety defense across military installations and essential veterinary care for the privately owned pets of service members and their families. Through these diverse missions, VRA, I, protects the health of the community and directly sustains the operational capability of the force.

THE ZIPPER RULE The German “zipper rule” (Reißverschlussverfahren) is a simple but very important traffic rule that often confuses English speaking drivers. Here is a clear, native speaker friendly explanation with practical examples. What the zipper rule means The Zipper Rule requires drivers to merge in alternating order when one lane ends. Think of two lanes closing into one: one car from the open lane, one car from the closing lane, one from the open lane, one from the closing lane — just like the teeth of a zipper.

Why it matters • It keeps traffic flowing efficiently • It prevents long queues in one lane • It is legally required under German traffic law (StVO §7(4)) How to do it • Use the full lane until it ends • Merge at the designated point • Alternate fairly with the continuing lane • Signal clearly and maintain steady speed Common misunderstandings • It is NOT rude to drive all the way to the end of the closing lane. In Germany, that is the

correct behavior. • Early merging is discouraged because it creates unnecessary bottlenecks. • Blocking the closing lane (to prevent others from passing) is illegal and considered aggressive driving. JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, HAWAII — Before most Oahu residents begin their day, U.S. Space Force 1st Lt. Thomas Moriarty is already on the road. Three days a week, Moriarty wakes up around 3 a.m., to make the drive from Mililani to Kakaako, where he trains for more than two hours at a local gym before returning to his duties as an operations officer. For the 48-year-old prior-enlisted Guardian, this routine is not only about lifting heavier weight, but it's also about discipline, longevity and setting a standard that others can follow. “I do think it's about exceeding the standards, but it’s also just about wanting to live with a high quality of life,” Moriarty said. “I

do this for my own quality of life. And so that, if my number’s ever called and I have to go do some physical stuff, I’m not going to be in a bad spot.” That mindset carried Moriarty beyond the standard of a military fitness test and onto the platform at the 2026 USA Powerlifting Hawaii State Championships. Competing in the raw, 82.5-kilogram Masters 1B division, Moriarty set six USA Powerlifting Hawaii state records at the Hawaii State Championships on April 25, 2026. His records included a 182.5-kilogram squat, 140-kilogram bench press, 215-kilogram deadlift, 140-kilogram bench press single lift, 355-kilogram push-pull total and 537.5-kilogram total. “I was 15 pounds off of the 1,200-pound club in my first competition at 47 years old, and there’s definitely more in the tank,” Moriarty said.

As the U.S. Department of War places renewed emphasis on holistic fitness across the military, Moriarty has already spent years putting that approach into practice, not only for himself, but for the service members around him. While stationed at Fort Eisenhower, Georgia, as a staff sergeant in the Air Force, Moriarty helped another staff sergeant who had failed three physical fitness tests and was facing the possibility of separation if he failed again. “I went and talked to him and I said, this is what’s going to happen if you want to pass your PT test,” Moriarty said. “You need to go buy a digital scale and weigh out every single piece of food you eat until your PT test. We are not even going to run. You’re going to squat, bench, deadlift and overhead press with me.” Over the next eight weeks, Moriarty said the Airman lost about 26 pounds. On test day, Moriarty ran beside him. “He passed and I had tears streaming down my face,” Moriarty said. “I told him, uniform on or off, no matter what I do in the rest of my career, I think this will be my proudest moment in the U.S. military.” The experience reinforced what Moriarty already believed: Fitness is not only about personal performance, but also about helping others realize what they are capable of. “To have the knowledge of fitness, weight management, strength training and just be able to pay that forward to everyone I come across,” Moriarty said. Moriarty said many service members overcomplicate fitness, viewing it as something that requires long workouts, strict routines or major lifestyle changes. To him, the foundation is a lot simpler. “A lot of people think that fitness requires

going to the gym or running or biking or cycling,” Moriarty said. “It is literally as simple as walking a lot and watching what you eat.” Moriarty said movement throughout the day can build habits without taking over a service member’s schedule. “You just have to move, whatever flavor that is for you,” he said. “Sitting down all day long is not good.” Now in the Space Force, Moriarty said he has seen the service continue building its own fitness culture as Guardians take a more consistent approach to physical readiness. While stationed at Joint Base Pearl HarborHickam Wahiawa Annex, he said daily physical training has become part of that culture and has even caught the attention of other service members. “When I’m at the annex gym or the annex track, there’s people in the Navy and they see us in our silver and black, and they’re like, ‘Space Force does PT?’” Moriarty said. “And I’m just like, ‘Yes, every day.’” Moriarty said that consistency is part of what makes readiness sustainable whether a service member is training for a fitness test, building healthier habits or competing on a platform. “A lot of it just comes down to identity,” he said. “This has been who I am since I first touched a weight in 1995.” Moriarty is scheduled to compete at USA Powerlifting West Regionals in Las Vegas in September. If he wins, he could earn a pro card and qualify for Masters Nationals in 2027. He is also considering competing in military nationals to represent the Space Force. “With my age and being in the Space Force, you’re kind of an underdog, and I love underdog stories,” Moriarty said.

LÜBECK from Page 1 farther and discover one of Germany’s truly historic cities, Lübeck is well worth the journey. Founded around 900 years ago, Lübeck – known as the “City of the Seven Towers” – is one of the most beautiful cities in northern Germany. Its historic center is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, picturesque waterways and magnificent buildings spanning centuries of architectural styles, from Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque and Neoclassical. It is hardly surprising that the historic center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Despite suffering significant damage during World War II, Lübeck retains much of the character that made it one of the most important cities on the Baltic coast. Exploring Lübeck’s historic old town he best way to experience Lübeck is on foot. The historic center is compact enough to explore easily, and almost every street seems to reveal another beautiful building, hidden courtyard or glimpse of the River Trave. The city’s most famous landmark is undoubtedly the Holsten Gate (Holstentor). Most walking tours begin here, and it is an impressive introduction to Lübeck’s medieval history. With its distinctive round towers, redbrick construction and imposing arched gateway, the Holsten Gate has become a symbol of the city. Two iron lions sit outside, while a museum inside the gate explores Lübeck’s history and its importance as a major medieval trading center. From here, continue into the old town to discover some of Lübeck’s magnificent churches.

Lübeck’s historic center is actually situated on an island surrounded by the River Trave and smaller waterways. Several boat and harbor cruises offer a different perspective on the old town, taking you past historic buildings, bridges and sections of the city that are easy to miss from the streets. It’s a particularly pleasant option on a warm day, and a good excuse to put your feet up for a while. Don’t leave without trying Lübeck marzipan Lübeck is also famous for something considerably sweeter: marzipan. The almond-and-sugar confection has been associated with the city for centuries, and sampling some while you are there is practically obligatory. There is a popular legend that marzipan was created during a period of food shortages, when only almonds and sugar remained available. Whether or not the story is true, Lübeck’s association with marzipan is very real, and you’ll find it in all sorts of forms throughout the city. From traditional blocks and chocolates to elaborate marzipan creations, it makes an excellent souvenir — or simply a muchneeded snack during a day of sightseeing. Lübeck at Christmas If you happen to visit Lübeck in December, you’re in for an extra treat. Like many German cities, Lübeck hosts a traditional Christmas market, but its historic setting gives it a particularly magical atmosphere. The medieval streets, old churches and brick Gothic architecture provide a beautiful backdrop for market stalls, decorations, food and festive drinks. It is easy to see

why Lübeck is particularly popular during the Christmas season. An Evening in Lübeck If you decide to stay overnight, there is plenty to keep you occupied after the sightseeing is finished. The city has a good selection of bars and restaurants, with plenty of opportunities to sample traditional northern German food. Expect plenty of potatoes, meat and beer, although Lübeck is becoming increasingly multicultural, with Turkish, Polish and Greek influences visible in restaurants and cafés around the city. And, perhaps unsurprisingly for a German city with plenty of international visitors, you’ll also find your fair share of Irish pubs. Where next? Eventually, though, it will be time to leave Lübeck, and this is where the city’s location becomes particularly appealing. You can head south again and continue

exploring Germany, or keep going north. Follow the Autobahn toward the Danish border and, in less than two hours, you can find yourself in Denmark. But that’s another day trip for another day. For now, enjoy Lübeck: a city of medieval towers, winding waterways, marzipan, remarkable architecture and centuries of history packed into one very walkable old town. Getting to Lübeck By car, the journey can take just over five hours from Wiesbaden/Frankfurt and around 6-7 from KMC or Stuttgart, so it’s really more of a weekend break, or a stop off en route to Scandinavia. It’s also quite close to Hamburg, so if you have a couple of extra days, you can cover both cities. Travelling by Deutsche Bahn takes around the same time as driving. A city with a darker history Lübeck’s history is not all medieval architecture and picturesque streets. The city and its surrounding waterways are also connected to one of the worst maritime disasters of World War II. In April 1945, British aircraft attacked ships in Lübeck Bay carrying concentration camp prisoners. Thousands of prisoners died in the sinking. Today, the site serves as a reminder of this tragic chapter in the city’s history. It is possible to walk toward the harbor and surrounding memorial sites to pay your respects and learn more about what happened.
