USAG Rheinland-Pfalz celebrates partnerships, freedom at 75/250

German-American Friendship Fest

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz teamed up with the District and City of Baumholder to host a three-day festival honoring 75 years of German-American partnership in the region and 250 years of U.S. independence, July 3-5.

The festival took place at the former Baumholder Airfield, which is now a U.S. Army training area located inside a German military training area. The event drew crowds of Germans and Americans alike, with upwards of 20,000 guests estimated to have attended on July 4. Fest goers enjoyed live music and entertainment, fair food, carnival rides, military displays and a fireworks display to mark America’s 250th Independence Day.

The event made headlines. A crew from ABC News produced several live shots from the fest throughout the day on July 4 as part of Disney’s America 250 25-hour live broadcast. Local news SWR produced a lengthy piece featuring interviews from fest attendees, local leaders and event organizers.

To demonstrate the unique friendship between Americans and Germans in Baumholder, each nation hosted a day of the fest. On July 4, the Americans led the celebration in honor of Freedom 250, while on July 5, the German community took the helm, showcasing the culture, heritage and hospitality of the region.

“This back-to-back celebration perfectly captures the essence of our relationship, standing side-by-side, sharing our cultures, our history and our future,” said Col. Jeffery

Higgins, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander.

While the garrison always marks the 4th of July with an on-post event open to servicemembers and their families and escorted guests, this was the first time the event stretched across three days and took place outside the fence.

Higgins noted that putting the event together was “no small lift.”

“This is the most complex operation that United States Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz has ever conducted,” he said. “It required a full year’s worth of intense planning, coordination, sheer hard work and a handful of last-minute ‘Hail Marys.’”

Joe Wucik, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz operations officer in Baumholder, served as the lead planner for the massive undertaking. He said a highlight of the planning was meeting the challenge of integrating the processes and capabilities of organizations from two nations across military, government and commercial enterprises.

“The biggest challenge was the location of the event,” Wucik said. “The location was somewhat remote and required a thorough plan for parking and transportation to the site.”

He added that the team worked out a “robust” security plan that incorporated U.S. and German Army military police and Polizei capabilities to assure a safe and secure experience for all fest attendees.

“The event was a true success, providing quality food and entertainment to both U.S. personnel and our German partners,” Wucik said.

Higgins said the festival means more than mere entertainment.

“It is a celebration of American Independence and all those who defend those ideals,” he said, “and it is a testament to 75 years of shared lives, shared challenges and shared triumphs here in Baumholder.”

435 AGOW/CC reflects on one year in command

One year ago, I had the distinct honor of becoming your 435th Air Ground Operations Wing commander

Since taking command of the FOLLOW ME Wing, I’ve had the opportunity to visit many of you, and it has been the highlight of my time here.

If you asked me last June if I thought we would be busy, I would’ve resoundingly said, “yes,” but none of us could have predicted just how integral to the mission we would be as we demonstrated numerous times how we are “First to the Fight!”

My priority was heavily focused on defining the wing’s operational identity and securing its future foundation. We rolled out our newmission, vision, and priorities, as well as the 435 AGOW Operations Order.

Our senior leaders demanded a clear understanding of “Aggregate Readiness,” which was key because the 435 AGOW plays an important role in delivering just that. While we worked on these initiatives, we endured a government shutdown. Despite these challenges, the wing maintained its operational tempo and continued to deliver airpower at minute one.

The 435 AGOW demonstrated its capabilities through exercises HEAVY RAIN, AGILE BISON, and SABER JUNCTION. It was a great honor to consistently witness the professionalism you exhibited while executing such complex scenarios.

As 2026 started, we focused heavily on real-world contingencies. Senior leaders across the theater characterized the 435 AGOW as “The Grease” that keeps Joint Force operations running smoothly, acknowledging the wing’s unique ability to set the theater and connect the fight for follow-on forces.

As the anniversary of taking command passes, we’ve continued to secure resources while navigating a dynamic transition period with the departure of our deputy commander, command chief, two group commanders, and 10 squadron commanders. I recognize this places the heavy burden to maintain continuity on our Airmen. However, this transition is only temporary, and when our new leaders are in their seats, they will be ready to follow you because of your excellence.

To every 435 AGOW Airman: THANK YOU! Every day you bring your best to ensure we remain the best. I don’t take lightly the fact that this comes at a great cost. I extend my sincerest thanks to your families, who also sacrifice because of your service.

With our current operations tempo, I know how difficult it can be to take some time for yourselves and your families, but please make

this a priority. Especially as we move through the summer, I hope you find time to enjoy yourselves and relax with loved ones. Also, take the time to look out for those around you.

I am excited to welcome all our new teammates, including our incoming command chief, Chief

Master Sgt. Chris Hucks. I cannot wait for us to hit the road; we look forward to meeting you all, learning about your jobs, and discovering how we can better take care of you.

Thank you for your service and for being part of the 435 AGOW Family!

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz firefighters battle wildland blaze near Baumholder

Courtesy story & photos

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz

Firefighters from U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Fire and Emergency Services deployed June 28-29 and again July 1 to provide mutual aid assistance during a major wildland fire near the village of Traisen, close to Bad Kreuznach.

The fire broke out during a recordbreaking heatwave, with regional temperatures reaching 41.1 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit). The extreme heat fueled a fast-moving forest fire that triggered the immediate, complete evacuation of the entire village of Traisen.

The 24-hour operation integrated Army assets with local German emergency agencies under dangerous conditions. The fire broke out in a steep, inaccessible area adjacent to a former munitions disposal site, triggering explosions of unexploded ordnance buried in the soil.

Because of the danger of further detonations, direct ground-level firefighting was deemed too highrisk for personnel. USAG RheinlandPfalz’s Hook-37 integrated operations with the “SuperWolf-HR1,” a specialized robotic tactical firefighting vehicle, providing a continuous water supply to the unmanned equipment as it engaged the fire in high-risk zones.

Germany’s Regional Disaster Management Agency issued the

mutual aid request at 8:30 p.m. on June 28, roughly 30 hours after the wildfire initially began.

The Baumholder Fire Alarm Communication Center immediately coordinated the response.

Robert Womble, USAG RheinlandPfalz’s deputy fire chief, ordered the dispatch of an engine company from Baumholder Military Community and a 7,000-liter mobile water supply tender from Miesau Army Depot.

Twenty personnel deployed to the scene over the course of multiple days, under the command of Womble and Assistant Fire Chief Tobias Lang. Upon arrival, the units staged at a local commercial facility until assigned to the fire line, where crews worked continuously through the night.

To sustain the operation and ensure firefighter safety, leadership established a disciplined, eighthour work-replace-rest cycle beginning at 8 a.m. Monday. Engine-52 was released early Monday morning, while the Hook-37 water tender remained on scene to conduct direct suppression and water shuttle operations.

Throughout the deployment, the garrison’s fire stations maintained continuous emergency protection, with backfill engine companies fully staffing both the Baumholder and Miesau fire stations.

ABC in KMC: Adventures by the sea

Let’s hit the beach!

Living in southwest Germany amid the Palatinate Forest, vineyards, castles, and sparkling rivers, you might not immediately picture sandy beaches and a maritime vibe. Spain, Italy and Greece may first come to your mind when planning a beach vacation. Yet believe it or not, Germany boasts more than 2,000 kilometers of coastline, including 76 inhabited islands, and cities that offer nostalgic Hanseatic charm.

Getting there may require an extended weekend trip and somewhat travel, but there is much to experience along the North and Baltic Seas. The nearest point on the North Sea coast from Kaiserslautern is about 669 km and takes roughly six hours.

There is a chain of islands along the German bight along the northwest coast called Borkum, Norderney, Juist, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge. Helgoland is a rocky island in the middle of the North Sea, mainly a strategic naval port and a dutyfree zone. Further north lie Föhr, Amrum and Sylt islands.

The Wadden Sea is a vast intertidal zone of mudflats, sandbanks, salt marshes and barrier islands along the southeastern North Sea, stretching across the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s largest unbroken tidal flat systems stretching for about 500 kilometers in length. It features sandy beaches, abundant seafood and a charming maritime atmosphere; but at low tide the sea recedes by up to three meters, exposing crabs and other marine life. Walking across the Watt is a popular activity, but it should always be done with a guide— many visitors have been swept out to sea or stranded on sandbanks when the tide returned unexpectedly. For further details, also see the Lifestyle article in the July 3 edition of the KA.

Moin!

As we head toward the North Sea, two worthwhile stops await. First Papenburg, an enchanting small town on the Ems whose medieval center, crisscrossed by canals and lined with fishing boats, offers an unexpected maritime charm.

Renowned for its shipping

industry, it is home to one of the world’s largest shipyards, specializing in massive cruise liners. Meyer Werft has built vessels such as the “Disney Wish” and hundreds of spectators gather to watch 16-deck ships being towed backwards down the shallow, narrow Ems River on their way to the open sea. Don’t miss an exciting tour of the shipyard https://www.meyerwerft.de/ en/visitors

A further charming stop known as the “Tor zu Ostfriesland” (Gateway to East Frisia), Leer is a riverside town of roughly 35,000 residents. It sits on the Leda, which joins the Ems River nearby. That riverside curve remains the heart of town today, featuring a panoramic riverwalk with a small marina, a lively pedestrian zone, and a historic Hanseatic quarter. Scenes of the town are also featured in a popular German crimecomedy series called “Friesland.” Germans often joke that East Frisians have a distinct character and even their own regional tongue. Plattdeutsch is largely unintelligible to speakers of standard German—its vocabulary and sounds show influences from English, Dutch and older dialects, and include local terms like Fehn for a peat fen and Siel for a small water inlet that don’t exist in standard German. East Frisians are also stereotyped as being very friendly, but don’t speak much. Instead of saying “Guten Morgen,” “Guten Tag” or “Guten Abend,”

people there commonly greet one another with ‘’moin,’’ a word that literally means morning but is used at any time of day.

Besides its beaches, Emden at the mouth of the Ems and Hanseatic Wilhelmshaven, with its beach promenade and maritime museum, are well worth a visit. The picturesque fishing village Greetsiel offers quaint shops selling maritime fashion and souvenirs, sample a Krabbenbrötchen (fresh shrimp sandwich) straight from the fishermen and enjoy a cup of Ostfriesentee, the region’s signature tea.

Hanseatic flair

Two further places somewhat further north lie along the Weser River. The “Freie Hansestadt Bremen” (Free Hanseatic City of Bremen) is Germany’s smallest state, completely embedded in the State of Niedersachsen, and is merely comprised of Bremen and Bremerhaven.

Its special Hanseatic status is based on the Hanseatic League, a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns developed in the 12th century. Port cities awarded a Hanseatic status held special market rights and brought wealth, prosperity and prestige.

Bremen is well known for the story of its musicians, based on the fairytale by the Brothers Grimm published in 1819, where an old donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster

team up and defeat evil. Meanwhile the animals have become iconic and pedestrian lights in the city depict the four figures.

The Altstadt in Bremen, with its medieval guild houses and a statue of the four, is definitely a point of interest. Legend has it, if you touch the leg of the donkey, you get a wish. The Schnoorviertel is the oldest city section with cobble stone alleys and unique shops. The Schlachte in the heart of the city is located directly along the Weser River. The former port now houses restaurants, bars and pubs as well as beer gardens. For more inspiration visit: https://www.bremen.de/ tourismus

Travels to the New World Bremerhaven, founded in 1827, is famous for a completely different reason. With waves of emigrants heading to the New World, the passenger port in Bremen became too small to handle the masses. A new port was built in 1854 and eventually developed into the largest emigrant port in Europe, known as Columbus Kai.

Today the joint port, both in Bremen and Bremerhaven, is the second largest in Germany after Hamburg. It has eight individual terminals, including a cargo port, a cruise ship terminal, a fishing terminal and the automobile terminal with a gigantic parking lot, where 95,000 cars can be parked for further handling. Bremerhaven may also ring a bell as most vehicles and household goods shipped from the United States reach their destination there.

Bremerhaven may not be the most picturesque city, but it holds a treasure chest full of cultural heritage, history and climate in

its “Hafenwelten.” The old harbor is full of historic ships, the “Schifffahrtmuseum” has vessels, such as the “Bremer Kogge“ built in 1380. The “Zoo am Meer” features sea animals and you can stroll along the dike with impressive cranes, cargo and cruise ships in the distance and a view of the enchanting Pingel lighthouse.

The “Deutsches Auswandererhaus” (German Emigration Center) has historical records and ship manifests for over a century of emigration. Over 7.2 million people boarded ships to seek their fortunes in the New World. There you can embark on a journey through time and experience an astonishing interactive museum or trace your roots in the genealogy section. https://www.dahbremerhaven.de/en/experience

The Klimahaus offers a different kind of voyage. Under the motto “nine places, five continents, one planet” it guides visitors along the eighth longitude through varied climate zones, part science center, part theme-park, so you can experience a world tour in a single afternoon. https://www.klimahausbremerhaven.de/en.

To round off our North Sea tour, we can head a little farther north to Cuxhaven or Büsum to catch a ferry to Helgoland, or drive to Niebüll and take the car-shuttle train across the 11-kilometer Hindenburgdamm to Sylt, Germany’s most popular and often priciest island. From there, just short of the Danish border, it’s only about 39 kilometers east to Flensburg on the Baltic coast. For more inspiration visit: https://nordseey.de/en/north-sea-beaches

21st Special Troops Battalion welcomes new command sergeant major

Command Sgt. Maj. Eric Raska assumed responsibility as the senior enlisted advisor of the 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, during a transfer of responsibility ceremony held at Panzer Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, June 8.

A native of Whitehouse, Texas, Raska brings more than 23 years of Army experience to the battalion. After attending Basic Combat Training in 2003 and Advanced Individual Training in 2004, he earned the designation of Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician. Throughout his career, he has served in a variety of leadership and operational positions within the EOD community.

His assignment to the 21st Special Troops Battalion marks the first time he has served outside the EOD career field.

“This is the first non-EOD job that I’ve done in my career, so the challenge of the dynamics of the organization and what we do is all very new to me, and I’m looking forward to it,” Raska said.

Raska attributes much of his success to the adaptability developed through years of conducting complex EOD missions. He believes flexibility, accountability

and teamwork are key components of successful organizations and effective leadership.

One of the milestones he is most proud of is graduating from EOD school, which he described as one of the most challenging experiences of his career. His interest in the field began after attending a presentation by an EOD team from Fort Sam Houston, where he first learned about the profession and its mission. Years later, he returned to serve as the first sergeant of that same company after its relocation to Fort Hood, Texas.

As he begins his new role, Raska plans to draw upon the lessons learned throughout his career to support the battalion and its Soldiers.

“If you do your job well, we will go far beyond anyone’s expectations,” Raska said. “That’s all I ask of anybody, do your job and do it well.”

Although the battalion’s mission differs from his previous assignments, Raska believes the principles of leadership remain constant. Through a focus on accountability, teamwork and professional excellence, he hopes to help the 21st Special Troops Battalion continue building readiness and accomplishing its mission across the European theater.

Face of Defense: Airman conquers 7 World Marathon Majors in less than a year

Six days after crossing the finish line in Boston, one Air Force colonel laced up again and ran the London Marathon.

Still sore and fatigued, Air Force Col. Alfredo “Juny” Laboy knew quitting was not an option because he was too close to completing his goal of becoming the only active-duty service member to complete all seven Abbott World Marathon Majors within a single calendar year.

According to Abbott World Marathon Majors data, he is also among just 44 athletes worldwide to accomplish this milestone for the first time within a single year. The World Marathon Majors are considered the pinnacle of endurance racing, consisting of premier marathons hosted across the globe.

In 2025, Sydney was added as the seventh major, requiring Laboy to incorporate a new benchmark, along with additional travel, recovery and preparation within an already compressed timeline.

That back-to-back stretch captured what defined Laboy’s entire year: the ability to adapt when the conditions change and remain ready when the mission demands it.

Throughout 2025, Laboy, 55, ran marathons in Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago, Arlington, Virginia, and New York City, all while serving as the Air Force’s Southern liaison officer to U.S. Southern Command.

“I was driven by a combination of curiosity and purpose,” Laboy said. “After completing marathons on all seven continents, I asked myself what would truly challenge me next. Completing all seven World Marathon Majors in one year wasn’t about chasing a medal — it was about testing discipline, consistency and resilience, the same traits the Air Force has demanded of me throughout my career.”

Pursuing Excellence

For Laboy, the pursuit was inseparable from his identity as a service member, woven together through physical, mental and professional readiness; the thread linking the racecourse to the operations center.

“Understanding what the achievement represented made it feel bigger than a personal milestone,” he said. “Becoming the only active-duty service member to earn the Six Star Medal and complete all seven World Marathon Majors in a single year carried a strong sense of pride and responsibility.

“This accomplishment allowed me to represent the United States Air Force and my hometown in Humacao, Puerto Rico, while also showing that being over 50 is not a limitation,” Laboy added. “You can pursue excellence in fitness and set meaningful goals at any stage of life.”

That readiness was tested repeatedly. Among the seven races, the Boston-to-London sequence required Laboy to compress recovery, recalibrate his physical expectations and execute without the preparation that most elite runners consider a minimum standard.

“The London Marathon was the most challenging because I ran it just six days after completing the Boston Marathon,” he

said. “Physically, my body was still fatigued, and mentally, it took every ounce of focus and determination to push through with almost no recovery time.”

The effort mirrored another demanding stretch later in the year, when he completed the Marine Corps Marathon, followed by the New York City Marathon just one week later. Sustaining that output alongside a full-time operational workload required the same kind of structured adaptability Laboy applies to planning missions.

“Balancing training with my role required flexibility,” Laboy said. “Most runs happened during the workday, fitting them in between meetings, when possible, while weekends were reserved for longer distances. That structure allowed me to stay consistent without stepping away from my operational responsibilities.”

Finding His Stride

This approach also supported Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s military fitness guidance, which emphasizes physical training as a daily duty requirement for service members. Laboy approached physical performance and professional execution with the same framework.

“I treated training like operations — plan, execute, assess and adjust,” he said. “Consistency mattered more than intensity, and everything had to complement the mission, not compete with it.”

Adaptability was not an option; it was a defining trait. Midway through the year, Laboy was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia, a development that would have ended the pursuit for most. Instead of quitting, he persevered. He restructured his approach and pressed forward.

“There were moments of doubt, especially after I was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia following the London Marathon,” Laboy said. “Under strict medical guidance, I

was able to delay surgery and complete the remaining races safely.”

Laboy also managed preexisting conditions throughout the year, including bilateral hip bursitis, plantar fasciitis and vestibular neuritis, a condition that affects balance. Each of these conditions required ongoing adjustments to keep him mission-capable on and off the course.

“Following medical guidance and adjusting expectations allowed me to keep moving forward without missing a single day of work due to running-related injuries,” he said.

‘There Are No Shortcuts’

Overcoming these obstacles further reinforces that the parallels between endurance sports and military leadership are direct, not metaphorical, according to Laboy.

“There are no shortcuts,” he said. “Both require preparation, accountability, adaptability and the ability to lead yourself before leading others.”

Air Force Lt. Gen. Evan Pettus, Southcom deputy commander, said Laboy’s accomplishment is a model of the readiness and adaptability the command requires of its leaders.

“I’ve had the opportunity to follow and talk with Juny throughout this journey, and what stands out isn’t just the mileage — it’s the discipline behind it,” Pettus said. “He never let a demanding schedule or personal setbacks distract him from the mission. He trained around his responsibilities, not the other way around. That balance and commitment to excellence while remaining fully engaged in the fight reflects the steady resilience and adaptability we expect from our leaders.”

Laboy said the year reinforced that readiness is not a product of youth, but of discipline sustained over time.

“Readiness isn’t limited by age, but it’s sustained by mindset,” he said. “Resilience is

built over time through discipline, physical fitness and mental toughness. When Airmen take care of themselves, they’re better prepared to take care of the mission.”

More Miles To Go

Standing at the finish line of his final race, Laboy said gratitude outweighed his exhaustion.

“I felt gratitude for my health, my mother, my kids and everyone who supported the journey,” he said. “I also felt excitement for what comes next and the goals still ahead.”

In April, Laboy completed the Coast Guard Marathon in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, followed by the Cape Town, South Africa, Marathon in May. Finishing the Cape Town race, now recognized as the eighth Abbott World Marathon Majors event, makes him one of fewer than 2,100 runners in the world to complete the entire series.

Looking forward, Laboy is scheduled to run the Air Force Marathon in September at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, and in October, the Army Ten-Miler in Washington, which completes the Armed Forces Series Challenge.

Additionally, he aims to position himself among the first athletes in the world eligible for the Nine Star Medal, expected to be introduced in December 2027, pending the Shanghai Marathon’s formal acceptance as the ninth and final World Marathon Major.

Beyond these milestones, Laboy is setting his sights on the ultimate test of endurance: running at the geographic North Pole. By racing on ice floes covering 12,000 feet of the Arctic Ocean, he hopes to earn membership in the exclusive Marathon Grand Slam Club — a distinction reserved for elite athletes who successfully complete a marathon on all seven continents, plus the grueling North Pole Marathon.

Air Force Col. Alfredo “Juny” Laboy poses with his World Marathon Majors medals outside U.S. Southern Command headquarters in Miami, Feb. 24. Laboy became the first active-duty service member to complete all seven World Marathon Majors within a single calendar year, marking a rare endurance achievement across the global race series.

TRAFFIC LIGHTS

Turning at traffic lights in Germany is a little bit different than in the US. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back!

There are two different green arrows that indicate how and when you can make a turn at a red light.

Scenario 1: Red traffic light and green metal arrow.

In this scenario, you are allowed to make a right turn on the right lane even though the traffic light is red. You do not have to, though! When you do, your car must come to a standstill at the line for 3 seconds and you need to yield to other participants in traffic. Pay special attention to other cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. If there is no danger to other members of traffic, you can make the turn.

Scenario 2: Red traffic light and green arrow within the traffic light.

In this scenario, you can make a right turn without stopping at the line. This green light arrow also gives you the right of way and you do not have to yield to other members of traffic.

Scenario 3: Red traffic light and no arrow.

Whenever there is a red traffic light that does not have a green arrow attached, you cannot make a right turn. You must stop at the traffic light until it turns green. Once the light turns green, you can make a turn but must yield to oncoming straight traffic.

As always, not adhering to German traffic regulations is fined. Up to € 70 and one point against your license if you don’t stop at the line in the metal arrow scenario 1. If you endanger someone, the fine goes up.

At least € 118.50 and one point against your license if you run a red light. If you endanger other traffic, fines go up and your license will be suspended.

As temperatures rise, Army Sustainers keep Baumholder hydrated, mission-ready

As temperatures across Europe surged into the 90s this week, the rising heat posed a real threat to mission readiness and community safety. In response, the 16th Sustainment Brigade activated one of its many sustainment capabilities, calling on Soldiers of the 240th Composite Supply Company to provide critical water relief to the Baumholder Military Community. Their rapid response showcased just a portion of the capabilities housed within the 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and the broader sustainment enterprise across the brigade.

The 240th CSC is no stranger to supporting the community. In recent months, the unit has represented the Knights Brigade during water-related disruptions, using its technical expertise to deliver safe, reliable access to potable water. Their ability to mobilize quickly and provide immediate sustainment effects has made them a trusted asset across the installation.

This week, their mission shifted to heat-injury prevention as rising temperatures affected military communities across Europe.

On June 24, Soldiers from the 240th CSC were tasked to establish a community-accessible potable-water point on Smith Barracks. A two-Soldier team rapidly mobilized, setting up at a water access point and preparing a 2,000-gallon HIPPO water distribution system for public use. Spc. Collin Gordon, a 92W water treatment specialist, monitored system gauges while Staff Sgt. Elizabeth Castillo, a fellow 92W and section leader, filled the tank.

“This system is normally used in field environments and can hold up to 2,000 gallons,” Castillo said. “When paired with Army platforms such as the Load Handling System or the Palletized Load System, it can be transported anywhere we need it.”

The mission provided immediate relief to the community while allowing the Water Platoon to train on wartime tasks — reinforcing readiness while delivering real-time support.

Recently, the 240th CSC demonstrated these same capabilities alongside NATO partners, including the Finnish Army, during SWORD 26, showcasing the brigade’s ability to mobilize, purify, and distribute potable water from non-consumable sources. These joint efforts strengthened interoperability and highlighted the 16th Sustainment Brigade’s reputation for delivering world-class sustainment across the European theater.

“Hydration is a critical part of medical readiness,” Spc. Gordon emphasized. “Dehydration can lead to kidney failure or even death. This water point helps prevent that.”

On June 25, the HIPPO was staged in a central, high-traffic area to support Soldiers conducting physical training and community members moving across the installation. With early-morning temperatures already climbing, the water point offered a place to hydrate, cool off, and refill containers — a simple but effective measure to reduce heat-related injuries.

June 25. The potable -water point was established to provide Baumholder Military Community residents relief from rising temperatures and to support ongoing heat-injury prevention efforts.

A second team, including Spc. Henry Karimu, another 92W, executed the follow-on phase by downloading the HIPPO and preparing it for continued use. Before departing, Karimu conducted a serviceability check, splashing water on his face and taking a drink — a small reminder of the system’s immediate value.

By establishing this water point, the 16th Sustainment Brigade once again demonstrated the essential role of Army sustainers: protecting Soldiers, maintaining readiness, and supporting the daily flow of life across the Baumholder Military Community — with the 95th CSSB and 240th CSC leading the effort on the ground.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Elizabeth Castillo, a 92W water treatment specialist and section leader with the Water Platoon, 240th Composite Supply Company, 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, stands atop a HIPPO water distribution system as she uses a hose from a water access point on Smith Barracks to fill the 2,000-gallon unit during potable -water operations in Baumholder, June 24.

Below: A HIPPO water distribution system sits in a small lot adjacent to the Baumholder Library, serving as a rehydration point for Baumholder Military Community residents as a preventative measure against heat-related injuries. The equipment was staged the morning of June 25, by Soldiers from the 240th Composite Supply Company, 95th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.

Honoring the Mission: LRMC recognizes Legacy Plus Soldiers as deployment concludes

As one deployment comes to an end, another chapter of readiness begins.

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center recognized more than 173 Request for Forces (Legacy Plus) Soldiers during an end-oftour awards ceremony, honoring their contributions to the military’s largest hospital outside the continental United States June 29 in the Heaton Auditorium.

The ceremony marked the conclusion of a deployment that saw Soldiers rapidly integrate into LRMC’s mission, helping expand the hospital’s capacity while maintaining uninterrupted patient care.

Col. Warran Stewart, commander of LRMC, thanked the Legacy Plus Soldiers for their service and commitment to the mission.

“You left your homes and families on short notice, arriving here ready to lead, adapt, and make us a stronger team!,” Stewart said. “You literally made us a better place the second you hit the ground.”

Stewart said the Soldiers strengthened the organization through their diverse backgrounds, professional expertise, and positive attitudes.

Lt. Col. Lynae Place, LRMC’s Legacy Plus lead, thanked the permanent staff for welcoming the deploying Soldiers and sharing their expertise throughout the mission.

“You prepared us to face the harshest realities, ensuring we were ready to care for combat casualties when they arrived,” Place said. “The readiness we built together is real,

and we proved that with only a 48-hour notice, we could mobilize and get service members on a plane directly to LRMC.”

Stewart said the rapid mobilization demonstrated an unprecedented level of readiness.

“Never before has a unit mobilized with a zero-notice deployment within 48 hours in support of a real combat operation to a military treatment facility, doubling its size and capacity, while continuing their regular mission,” Stewart said.

He said Army senior leaders, includingGen. Christopher Donahue, commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the Army surgeon general, and other Army Medicine leaders praised the team’s ability to rapidly integrate into the mission.

“The Legacy Plus Soldiers didn’t just fill gaps,” Stewart said. “They brought fresh energy, specialized skills, and an unwavering commitment to patient care and operational support.”

Whether caring for patients, managing logistics, or supporting administrative operations, the Soldiers played a critical role in sustaining LRMC’s mission throughout the deployment.

“Just four days ago, while walking through the intensive care unit, I watched them conducting training,” Stewart said. “Even while preparing to return home, they were still looking for ways to improve. They identified capability gaps and approached the scenario as if it were a real-world crisis. You just can’t replicate that level of dedication.”

As the awards were presented, the cer-

Col Mark Cheney, Legacy Plus lead; and Lt. Col. The ceremony marked the conclusion of the Legacy Plus deployment supporting a named combat operation.

emony reflected pride and gratitude for a successful deployment. For many Soldiers, the mission was a defining professional experience as they cared for wounded, ill, and injured service members, retirees, and family members while supporting the hospital’s readiness mission.

Although the deployment is ending, leaders said the impact of the Legacy Plus Soldiers will continue long after their departure.

“We couldn’t have been as successful as we were without leaders like Col. Stewart, Command Sgt. Maj. Oquendo, Lt. Col. Alvarez, Command Sgt. Maj. Woolley, 1st

Sgt. Hobson, and Capt. King, who welcomed the Legacy Plus personnel as members of their own team,” said Sgt. 1st Class Danny Bruce noncommissioned officer in charge of Legacy Plus.

Bruce said the deployment provided invaluable operational experience that will benefit the Soldiers throughout their careers.

“The resilience these Legacy Plus service members have shown, and the real-world experience they’ve gained here, will have a lasting impact on their careers and lives,” Bruce said. “They are leaving here not only as better Soldiers, Airmen, and medical professionals, but as better leaders.”

BURGHAUSEN from Page 1

local Bavarian hospitality. It is also a fantastic spot from which to explore some of the most beautiful places in Germany and Austria.

1.

A kilometer of castle

Germany is rightly famous for its castles. But the one in Burghausen is a must-see – both up close and from a distance. Why? For starters, the castle is more than a kilometer long (1,051 meters, to be exact), which makes for a fantastic photo opportunity when looking up at it from the beautiful medieval old town.

It’s also packed with history. The area in which the castle stands has been inhabited for thousands of years. The castle itself has been around for a millennium. Incredibly, it has escaped total destruction throughout its history, though it has been repaired and modernized on many occasions.

Visiting the castle is a very memorable experience (and one that is filled with plenty of worthy photo ops, too). Visitors can explore the castle walls, race across drawbridges, duck into cool old halls and cells, and wander through on-site museums and gift shops. As a bonus, the views from the castle are outstanding. Austria lies just on the other side of the Salzach River.

2.

Four-season fun

Burghausen is a joy to visit during any season of the year. The old town is beautiful. It offers narrow cobblestone

streets, Bavarian architecture, shops, restaurants, old churches, and a healthy dose of Bavarian food and drink (biergartens!).

Burghausen also feels a little bit like a secret destination. Five hundred years ago, the town (and area) was doing really, really well, thanks in large part to the economic benefits it reaped from a thriving salt trade. Like most “good” things in medieval Europe, however, the town’s medieval prosperity came to an end because of war and a noble takeover of the salt trade. The town’s status was greatly diminished, but much beauty remained – like the castle, which is gold for today’s tourists.

In the summer, the town is excellent for swimmers. Lake Wöhrsee is incredible. Located just beneath the ridge that holds the castle, it is a perfect spot for picnickers, swimmers, and people who love to take naps beneath shade trees. You can walk there from the old town. And when you glance up, you remember: the world’s longest castle is just above you.

In the winter, Burghausen is just a short drive from a number of prime skiing destinations in Austria (and even Italy, just a couple of hours over the Alps). Autumn and spring are gorgeous times to visit, as well.

3.

Side trip central

Would you like to visit Munich, Salzburg, and Berchtesgaden? Well, Burghausen is located an hour from all three places. In one long weekend, you can soak up all the goodness the town has to offer and some of the region’s most famous destinations.

Additionally, the Alps are so very close to Burghausen. If you’re itching to see the Austrian Alps, especially, on the eastern side of Salzburg (and you should, because they’re amazing), Burghausen will get you there quickly.

Getting There

By car, Burghausen is 5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3 hours from Stuttgart, and 5 hours from Wiesbaden. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
